00:00Well I think we're entering into a brand new era. We're closing a chapter on what we've just had and I think it's a massive change.
00:18This period of time that we're going through and this huge change that we've had going into this year's championships,
00:22it's certainly the biggest that I've been involved in the whole time I've been in VX Supercars.
00:26We've got brand new manufacturers and we're one of the lucky teams to have one of the new ones on board, we've got Mercedes-Benz AMG.
00:34First time in a brand new car, a brand new Nissan Altima, it's us against everyone else out there.
00:41Whatever's happened in the past is the past and this is a brand new era.
00:46It's time to go racing, the new brands are on the grid with us, the new cars are there for all of us and it's time to hit the track in anger.
00:56The Clipsaw 500 is traditionally the most difficult race physically that any driver attacks for the whole season.
01:05This is the perfect arena to unveil, the car of the future, four manufacturers, all new rules, all new cars because there's so much passion at that race.
01:13The breakthrough win for Will Davison.
01:15I think the gates are going to be flooded with people in anticipation to see them in the cars.
01:21You know the car of the future actually brings a whole new dimension, I think that's probably going to catch a few people off.
01:27Four brands, for the first time we see Mercedes on the grid, we see Nissan on the grid and we see Ford and Holden which we know very well.
01:35It's got that feel about, it's a new era and that's going to be a very special day.
01:42Everybody, reach out, reach out, reach out to somebody.
01:50When there is an unknown, we are all nervous but we're all ready. Let's hope, you know, we can adapt quicker than anyone else.
01:57Being a street circuit, you don't have time to stop. You're always up and down the gearbox, you're hard on the brakes, you're hard on the throttle.
02:03For 78 laps and then to back it up again on the Sunday, that's why, you know, that element just in line makes it one of the toughest races, if not the toughest race of the year.
02:11To deal with 250 k's one day, then again the next day, mentally it's quite draining.
02:16The hardest thing about Adelaide is a concrete, there's no hiding behind it.
02:28Now for drivers it feels like day one but for the fans, it's a new era and, you know, they're going to embrace it.
02:34Hopefully it's a four way battle between the four manufacturers and, you know, we do get a bit of rivalry in the crowd
02:39and I think they're going to see the best racing they've ever seen in that category.
02:42For me it is, as a driver, quite an incredible time.
02:46It's like Christmas, we're about to unwrap our toy and give it a try.
02:52We just can't work you out there now and cut some laps.
03:09It is going to be a hot one in the city of Adelaide today.
03:18We will top 30 degrees and backing up after a blistering day yesterday.
03:23It's going to be a real test of endurance here at the Clipsal 500, our first event of 2013.
03:29Hi everybody, I'm Matt White and welcome to the V8 Supercars here on 7.
03:33The final race of what has already been an exhausting weekend here at the Clipsal.
03:39The big question today will be how will the drivers, the teams and these cars back up
03:44after a brutal 250km season opener yesterday.
03:48Let's run you through how it unfolded.
03:50It didn't start well for that bright yellow car on pole position.
03:53Shane Van Gisbergen, Team VIP Techno Autosports, just couldn't get away from the start.
04:00It was a gearbox issue that ultimately forced his retirement 62 laps later.
04:05It meant that Mark Winterbottom led the first lap, but Frosty also had a gearbox problem
04:10and he would DNF as well.
04:12Todd Kelly, the brand new Nissan Altima, car number 7, power steering issue, a broken hose.
04:17He goes into the garage, would not finish.
04:19Dick Johnson Racing's new boy, Tim Blanchard, finds the wall.
04:23You're on board with the youngest driver, Scott McLaughlin, looking at the oldest driver,
04:27Russell Ingle, who also finds the wall.
04:29This was one of the stories of the day.
04:31Look at this, Lee Holtzworth comes in.
04:33They had to tape up his race boot because it was boiling 60 degrees inside the cockpit.
04:39James Courtney tags Jason Bright.
04:41Courtney would lose 15 championship points.
04:44Here's Jonathan Webb, the other Techno Autosports car.
04:46It finds the wall.
04:48He was stuck in fourth gear.
04:50He managed to find reverse, but somehow didn't get collected by a very wise David Wall
04:56coming up behind him.
04:57It dumped oil.
04:58Our race leader Craig Lowndes enjoyed it for a little bit.
05:00This is the hard luck story of the day though.
05:02Fabian Coulthard should have been on the podium in the Lockwood Commodore.
05:06He had the pace.
05:07He had the position.
05:08But he would end up midfield after the stack of late race dramas.
05:12It was a big win though for Craig Lowndes and Red Bull Racing Australia.
05:16A record breaking margin over 20 seconds.
05:20His fifth race win at the Klipsal 500 street circuit.
05:24His 90th career win.
05:26And that puts him equal with Mark Scaife at the top of the all-time winners list.
05:30Will Davison the leading four.
05:32Jamie Winkup also on the podium.
05:33A great story out of Fujitsu.
05:35Both cars.
05:36Alex Premmer and young Scotty McLaughlin inside the top 10 in the first race of the season.
05:41Rick Kelly was the best of the new manufacturers.
05:44Eleventh there for Nissan.
05:46And Lee Holdsworth was finished in 17th.
05:48So Tim Slade the best of the Mercs in 15th.
05:51And there were four DNFs.
05:53So 28 brand new cars.
05:55Only four DNFs.
05:56Van Gisberg and Johnny Reed.
05:58Todd Kelly and Mark Winterbottom.
05:59Overall not a bad result when you roll out 28 brand spankers.
06:03So a mixed bag for our four manufacturers.
06:05Let's go around the grounds.
06:06Larco is in the Ford camp.
06:08Scaifee in the Nissan bunker.
06:09We've got Barrettes at AMG.
06:11And let's start with you Neil Crompton at Holden.
06:13Hi Matty.
06:14Yeah I'm down here at Lockwood Racing at the moment.
06:16This is the new VF Holden Commodore.
06:18If it's a brood of a thing.
06:19Very different styling.
06:20New front bumper and front wing.
06:22And have a look up the back.
06:23Ironically the wing actually looks a little bit like the wing that we saw on the Ford in recent years.
06:28As I said Lockwood Racing.
06:29These guys as you pointed out a moment ago yesterday.
06:32Had a pretty tough start.
06:33But they did have a very fast race car.
06:35Hey for Holden.
06:36Two cars.
06:37Red Bull on the podium.
06:38Not a bad start for those guys.
06:39And there are four different teams building Holden Commodores this year.
06:42And a pretty fair start.
06:43Yesterday a little drama in here with the brake caliper on this car.
06:46It was weeping oil.
06:48And that cost this man Fabian Coulthard.
06:50Great shame.
06:51Matt just detailed what happened.
06:53But you've got a quick race car and that's gratifying.
06:55Yeah you know especially for a 250k race that's important.
06:58You know it's still as important to qualify up the front.
07:00But we managed to do it yesterday.
07:02Hopefully we can do the same today.
07:03Good luck.
07:04Alright thanks.
07:05Well only six of those 28 cars in the field of Fords.
07:08But don't for a second Ford fans.
07:10Me included.
07:11Roll over on this one.
07:12Because some of them are very very fast.
07:14Particularly out of this garage here.
07:16The FG Falcons.
07:17They look fairly similar.
07:18But they're not.
07:19They're brand new Falcons.
07:20Mark Winterbottom had a gearbox issue yesterday.
07:23Or a gear issue.
07:24Not so much a gearbox issue.
07:25But very very fast.
07:26Expect a lot from him today.
07:27Expect a lot from him today.
07:28He had a DNF.
07:29Will Davidson.
07:30Second yesterday.
07:31They've given the car a little bit of a tune overnight.
07:33Expect a lot from him.
07:35Now by the way just remember.
07:36I had a good chat to Stevie Johnson this morning.
07:38Dick Johnson racing.
07:39They are very keen to reinvigorate that team.
07:42And watch out for them later in the year.
07:44We'll come back to Davey Reynolds in a sec.
07:46But this is an interesting one.
07:47Alex Davidson.
07:48Who is the brother of Will Davidson.
07:50Ninth yesterday.
07:51You might remember he competed a couple of years ago.
07:53He's back.
07:54That's a very solid finish.
07:55Guy I want to catch up with though.
07:56Davey Reynolds.
07:57Who finished 20th yesterday.
07:58After qualifying 21st.
07:59Davey.
08:00Mate.
08:01We were probably expecting a little more from you.
08:03Just tell us.
08:04I'm a little bit perplexed.
08:05Because you're fast.
08:06You're cool.
08:07What's going on?
08:08I don't know.
08:09I just didn't get the most out of it in qualifying.
08:11And then.
08:12You know.
08:13The gearbox.
08:14Mount.
08:15Bolt broke.
08:16And you could probably see on my in-car footage.
08:17You know.
08:18Like the gear stick was moving every time.
08:19Accelerate and brake.
08:20And I'm like.
08:21Got on the radio.
08:22And I'm like.
08:23Boys.
08:24This thing's not well.
08:25Bolt in it.
08:26So we went five laps down.
08:27But otherwise.
08:28I had really good pace.
08:29You know.
08:30The bottle car's been.
08:31Been faultless all weekend.
08:32Except for that little fault we had.
08:33So as I said mate.
08:34The cars are fast.
08:35There you are.
08:36Give that a polish up.
08:37Good as gold mate.
08:38Good luck today.
08:39It was a history making day.
08:40You've got to get this bike in.
08:41You've got to get this bike in.
08:42They debuted these three magnificent cars.
08:44They are Mercedes-Benz AMG E63s.
08:46The first time they've been raced anywhere in the world.
08:49They started three.
08:50They finished three.
08:51In fact.
08:52All their drivers.
08:53Murrow Engel.
08:54Tim Slade.
08:55And Lee Holdsworth.
08:56Improved their positions as the race went on.
08:58There was an issue.
08:59It was with heat in the footwell.
09:00Take a look at what they've had to do overnight.
09:02They've been inside the car.
09:03Inside the footwell.
09:05They've reinforced the fire proofing.
09:07They've tried to insulate it.
09:08And they've also improved the ducting down in the footwell as well.
09:11As you would imagine.
09:12Debuting these cars.
09:13There is work going on right down to the last minute today.
09:16But come with me now.
09:17And meet the man who probably suffered the worst of it yesterday.
09:19And that's Lee Holdsworth.
09:21Lee has bad blistering on his feet.
09:24Lee.
09:25I see you've taped the boots.
09:26More heat proofing there today.
09:27How are the blisters?
09:28Sorry.
09:29I can't hear what you say.
09:30How are the blisters today?
09:31Yeah.
09:32I had a monster blister on this right one.
09:34And had to pop it this morning.
09:36But it was character building yesterday.
09:39Yeah.
09:40It was so tough.
09:41It was excruciating pain.
09:42So I just hope.
09:44You know.
09:45The damage is done now.
09:46But they reckon they're fixed in the car.
09:47Hopefully the temperature's not so bad.
09:49But like I said.
09:50The damage is done.
09:51We just have to try it out this morning.
09:53See how it is.
09:54Good luck today.
09:55Thanks, Brad.
09:56Cheers.
09:57Well, it's been over 20 years since we've seen Nissan Motor Company
09:59operating at the highest level in Australian motorsport.
10:02We saw four Nissan Altimas on the grid yesterday
10:05for the first race of the Clipsville 500.
10:07Two Jack Daniels cars and two Norton cars.
10:10Rick Kelly.
10:11Superb performance.
10:12Finished 11th.
10:13Just out the side.
10:14The top 10 for the first of their appearances.
10:16Michael Caruso, one of the star recruits.
10:19You had a couple of power steer drummers yesterday, mate.
10:21But what's the car feel like?
10:22Are you really happy with it?
10:23Look, I'm actually really pleased.
10:24I mean, we qualified 13th.
10:26And just to be outside the top 10 on that debut for the Nissan Altima
10:30is absolutely brilliant.
10:31Mate, well done.
10:32All the very best.
10:33Enjoy it.
10:34Thanks very much.
10:35It's a big event in so many ways.
10:37Last night, Aussie rock legends Ian Moss was up on stage.
10:41So too with the angels.
10:42It's just part of the rock and race field here at the Clipsville 500.
10:46The 15th year of this event that has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
10:50More than 80,000 people were here yesterday.
10:53I reckon we're edging towards a record crowd today.
10:57It's going to be hot.
10:58It's going to be a lot of fun.
10:59250 Ks still to come.
11:01And one of the new faces here, Scott McLaughlin out of Gary Rogers Motorsport.
11:0519 years of age.
11:07He finished inside the top 10 yesterday in his first ever full time V8 supercar career race.
11:13Let's see how he goes today.
11:15He's one of the new faces in the new era of V8 supercars.
11:25Scott McLaughlin for Fujitsu Racing.
11:27The 19 year old has done it.
11:29He's become the youngest champ.
11:32To be part of the 2013 V8 Supercar Championship Series is a huge thing for me.
11:36I've been working towards this for my whole life.
11:38So I feel like I'm more than ready to do it.
11:40And, you know, I just want it to come on.
11:42I just want it to happen already.
11:43Mike wins the race.
11:45He wins the round.
11:46Great job.
11:47It's a bit surreal to say the least.
11:50I mean, to be a South Australian and lining up on my home circuit for my first ever round
11:54V8 supercars.
11:55It was a fantastic opportunity, you know, to have been on the same grid.
11:58And so people like Craig Lowrens and even Russell Indle, you know, guys I've watched since I was very young.
12:03I'm very excited about it.
12:04I have looked up to these guys but, you know, I'm not worried about it.
12:07I know I'm going to get roughed up up there.
12:08I'm the young bloke.
12:09So I'm ready to give it back whenever it comes to me.
12:12And, you know, I'm happy to finish the job when they start it.
12:15It is a beautiful Sunday here in the city of Adelaide.
12:25But it will be a scorcher this afternoon.
12:2831 degrees.
12:30And for the drivers, well, that means another long, hard afternoon of pain and blisters.
12:36So they've already done it once.
12:38250 Ks, not to mention all the practice sessions and qualifying leading in.
12:42But now they've got to get back into the car and realise that it's back down to business.
12:47All those aches and pains last night will start to flare up yet again.
12:51So this is the first event of 2013.
12:54We've got 14 on the calendar, a total of 36 races, one down, 35 to go.
12:59And this is our arena this afternoon.
13:01A true stadium-like atmosphere up along the Barry Sheen pit straight.
13:06Big grandstand.
13:07We break this circuit, 3.22 kilometres down to three sectors.
13:11And sector one is quite technical.
13:13The centre chicane up through turns three, four, five and six as we enter the street part of the circuit.
13:19Then sector two, the big, long, flowing straight down Bartels Road to turn eight.
13:24245 kilometres top speed there.
13:27And then sector three rounds through the parkland area and back onto the main straight.
13:32So we're getting ready for qualifying right now.
13:34Let's check in with Larko.
13:35Yeah, Matty, I reckon a really, really important aspect of this whole new generation of cars that I think everyone at home needs to get.
13:42Don't expect that anyone's ever going to come along and dominate like they did back in the, say, the Ford Sierra days.
13:48Remember those Nissan Godzillas that Scafie drove?
13:51That domination can't happen because we've got a performance parity checklist.
13:55Now, parity basically in our game means equalisation of performance.
13:59And there's two really big items that define performance for us.
14:02One is engine peak performance or engine performance.
14:05The other one is aerodynamics.
14:07And I can tell you after 20,000 kilometres of testing across six type of tracks, they've got this absolutely bang on.
14:14The cars are all around 650 horsepower.
14:17That's their peak performance.
14:19And they've got them all within 1%.
14:22Now, yes, I accept there's a little bit of work to do on fuel mileage and low down torque.
14:26But peak performance, they're bang on.
14:28The other one is downforce and drag.
14:30So downforce, front of the car, this is the aerodynamic pressure on the car.
14:35Front of the car, about 145 kilograms at 200 kilometres an hour.
14:39At the back, about 210 kilograms at 200 kilometres an hour.
14:44Overall, they've got all the cars at about 355 kilograms overall.
14:49Nearly bang on.
14:50That's fantastic.
14:51The other one is drag.
14:52Frontal area of a car.
14:53When you look at the front of a car, that area there, right, is what determines largely, along with the aerodynamic devices, the drag of the car.
15:01They've done a whole lot of testing in conjunction with aero.
15:03They've got that about bang on as well.
15:05So very, very well done.
15:07Absolutely, Larco.
15:09And that will play out over the course of the coming rounds.
15:14I mean, yesterday was the great unknown, wasn't it?
15:16That the Mercedes and the Nissans in particular knew they didn't have the straight line speed.
15:21So in terms of engine performance, they're looking for a little bit more.
15:24But really, it's a case of finding your feet here.
15:27You guys have done as much as you can to handle these cars onto the grid as close as they can be.
15:32Exactly, Matt.
15:33And they've done a great job.
15:34I mean, these guys have done this in 120 days for the E63 to be with us.
15:39And the peak performance, as Mark said, to have them all within 1% is extraordinary.
15:43And then to have them all within 2 kilos of overall downforce is much better than anybody thought we'd be able to do.
15:49So great job with all the technical people at Viet Supercar to facilitate these new vehicles on the grid this year.
15:55So qualifying underway for race two.
15:58It's a 20 minute flat out session.
16:00No shootout today.
16:03Conditions are ideal.
16:04It's not too hot right now.
16:06And the circuit is nice and clean.
16:08But it is warmer than for the same time yesterday.
16:11And even when we all stepped out of the hotels this morning straight away,
16:14you could really feel that, you know, that real heat that we've experienced here in the past.
16:19The Eclipsal 500 wasn't evident early in the weekend.
16:22And that'll be a factor given that they're backing up for the second day.
16:25And they're all drained so hard from yesterday.
16:27And how would you like to be this bloke?
16:29Blisters all over your foot.
16:30You've got, now, higher steering loads.
16:33You've just driven the car.
16:34And, ooh, that was very close.
16:36Big oversteer moment right in the middle of the corner there to believe.
16:41But you feel sore, don't you?
16:42You've got blisters on your hands, blisters on your feet.
16:44But steering loads are higher.
16:45Now, you've got to take that all away.
16:47And for the next 15 minutes or so, do the very best, fastest lap time you can do
16:53for qualifying for the next segment of the Eclipsal 500.
16:56This is a bit wild.
16:58And it's a hard place to back up, as you know, Mark,
17:00because it's right at the top of the tree when it comes to a couple of critical things.
17:04It's pretty hard on brakes, especially so with traffic.
17:06It's right at the top of the tree as a bumpy race circuit goes.
17:10Average speed is only 140-odd kilometres per hour.
17:15But your work rate round here is extremely high.
17:18Jamie Winkup, our defending series champion, third yesterday in the race.
17:23And I reckon even he would admit that that was a bit of a bonus
17:27because he was aiming for about sixth or probably fifth or sixth,
17:31but a couple of cars ahead of him in the later stages of the race tripped up along the way.
17:36So Jamie starts 2013 with a third position.
17:39More importantly, he brought the car back straight.
17:42It's always good to see Dick Johnson here at the circuit.
17:45And, Dick, a lot of fans are wondering how the team's coming together,
17:48what the future holds for this year.
17:50Can you give us an update?
17:51Yeah, things are looking pretty good, mate.
17:53We're in a situation where, obviously, these cars really haven't turned the wheel until they got here.
17:59So this weekend is more of a test session for us than an actual race car.
18:04It's pretty obvious when you see the cars over the curb
18:08that they're not the best thing in the world.
18:10But the reliability is there, which is the important thing.
18:14You know, one car finished yesterday.
18:17The other one should have finished except, unfortunately,
18:20Johnny just didn't pull the gear lever hard enough.
18:22We thought it had something broken in there, but it wasn't.
18:25And otherwise, you know, everything's going pretty smooth.
18:28So, but as far as the future goes, we'll be around, mate.
18:32Look forward to it.
18:33And I know a lot of your fans do too, Dick.
18:34All the best.
18:35Thanks, buddy. Thank you.
18:36Dick Johnson Racing blocking in Tim Blanchard and Johnny Reed this season.
18:40So it's the first time in quite a few decades that there is no Johnson on the grid, either Dick or Steve.
18:46Steve is slotted into a general manager's role.
18:50And for performance racing people who prepare this green car on screen,
18:54Bottleo Racing for David Reynolds, they've changed all four gearboxes, trans axles in their car overnight.
19:00Cars, all of them.
19:01So they've lined up with fresh materials.
19:03So it's an immediate problem for Mark Winterbottom.
19:06But no drama for Will Davison.
19:08It was a problem for this guy as well, for David Reynolds.
19:11So they've taken extra steps to make sure that they've got themselves sorted.
19:16It was a different problem for Shane Van Gisbergen.
19:18It was just a plug that dropped out of that gearbox and it just wet some oil.
19:23So it was a different sort of thing.
19:24So these are the sort of glitches that you do get early.
19:26I actually got to the bottom of why Shane got off the line so badly yesterday as well.
19:30He was in neutral.
19:31Yeah.
19:32It looked like that.
19:33It looked like that because when he went to go, I actually, I almost said it.
19:37I thought, nah.
19:38But the wheel never moved.
19:39So it wasn't a clutch issue.
19:41It just wasn't a gear.
19:42He was using the line locker, which applies the brakes while he's stationary.
19:45And he said, he put his hand up and said, totally my mistake.
19:48Just was out of sequence and I dropped the clutch.
19:50It was in neutral.
19:51So it took a few seconds to get all that sorted.
19:54Whack it in first gear and get away and then battle for the rest of the day.
19:57It's a good looking car on screen here at the moment.
19:59Dean Fiore, Dodo Insurance.
20:01Pulled this deal together pretty late in the piece.
20:03There is Shane Van Gisbergen.
20:05Hole position.
20:07And then a very strong run.
20:09Climbing back through the field yesterday after the glitchy start.
20:14And then a little oil leak was the thing that hurt his day in the final analysis.
20:19He was very fast, wasn't he, Neil?
20:21He was probably...
20:22He and Fabian Coulthard were the only two guys that for genuine pace could have challenged Lowndes yesterday.
20:27Now qualifying in the standard qualifying session before the top ten was a 20.8 for Craig Lowndes.
20:34So the lap time we're looking for right now, Davison, 21.6.
20:38They need to be probably seven or eight tenths of a second faster, but unsure yet what the conditions are like this morning versus yesterday.
20:46So we'll take a break from the Clipsill 500.
20:48Halfway through qualifying, Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom, the two FPR boys at the top of the list.
20:53Well, here's the man who absolutely blitzed them yesterday.
21:03It was just such a dominant performance.
21:07Craig Lowndes, who won by more than 20 seconds in the Red Bull Racing Australia.
21:12VF Commodore was just looking for a bit of clean room out there in this qualifying session,
21:18which is headed by Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom.
21:20Jamie, Winkup on your screen is third.
21:22Dean Fiore, fourth.
21:24Lowndes is fifth.
21:25Lowndes is fifth.
21:26This is going to be quick for Winkup.
21:28Then it's Reynolds, Kremer, Bright, Van Gisbergen and Kelly.
21:31He was out of control.
21:32What happens when the cars slide over the kerb on the outside, the outside wheels got all the load.
21:38So it slid over the kerb, but then the inside wheel catches the paint.
21:42So when it caught the paint, it kept on wheel spinning and he didn't know where it was going to land.
21:46It just slid out to the fence.
21:47He was very lucky not to give the fence a roll.
21:49The beauty of the street circuit format is there's a fair amount of freestyle involved.
21:53We love to talk up the precision, but sometimes it's just grab it by the scruff and see where you land, isn't it?
21:58Exactly what happened to him then.
22:00He was about a car length behind the car then.
22:06He was currently in third.
22:07You can see on the right-hand side of your timing screen that Mark Winterbottom's also on a quick one.
22:14And Winterbottom.
22:15Go again for another.
22:17Further behind, and Winkup locks in a 1.21.6 to go to the top.
22:22Wills looking speedy again today.
22:25I spent a little bit of time in the garage and there's both the Pepsi Max Ford Performance Racing Ford Falcons.
22:30Frosty, if you look at the times from late in the race yesterday, he actually set the fastest lap of the race.
22:35Fabian Coulthard meet time.
22:37There he is on screen.
22:38Lockwood Racing.
22:39We were in the garage earlier.
22:40He's confirming the pace that's in that squad this weekend.
22:43Fastest man, 21.2.
22:45I was going to say Frosty was very quick right through the back end of that race, including doing the fastest lap late in the piece.
22:52So he was very happy with the balance of the car, but frustrated by the fact that obviously they had to change the gearbox and he was miles behind the play.
22:59Great job, Premar.
23:00Premar up to third with a 21.5.
23:02So Coulthard, Winterbottom, Premar, Winkup, Davison, Webb, Pye.
23:07Very good job, Scott Pye.
23:08Scott McLaughlin also ninth.
23:10Van Giesbergen now to number two.
23:12So 21.2.4 plays 21.4.2.
23:15James Courtney, great job.
23:1721.3.4 up to number two now.
23:19I love this session.
23:20The same guys that had the pace in the Friday qualifying session are starting to make their way up the list again.
23:27Tander with a 1.21.4.
23:29Slots into fourth.
23:30Two side by through and a turn one then.
23:33Slid right across the face of the corner and then it caught the curve very awkwardly at two.
23:38Okay mate, we've got to hop that side, we've got to hop so we can crawl down and...
23:43So that, when they talk about the hop, they just know that they've infringed that turn two curbing.
23:49There's a sensor down there to make sure that you don't get too greedy.
23:52At the top of the tree now is Mark Winterbottom at 21 even.
23:55It's been eclipsed straight away by Coulthard at 20.9 in the Lockwood entry.
23:59These guys have got some great speed in this car at the moment.
24:03And it's great that they all happen to be at the same part of the circuit at the same time.
24:08Front right guard is not properly secured on that car at the moment.
24:13Alex Davison up to number seven.
24:15That's a very good job.
24:16Dave Reynolds, eighth.
24:17Check this out.
24:18Look at the guard.
24:19It's just not fixed.
24:20I'd say the bottom mounting's come out of that at the moment.
24:23Super slow-mo shows the pounding the car takes when it leaps over the curb.
24:27Watch the tyre.
24:28Look at the deflection.
24:29Look at the suspension.
24:30And that's about as much as that curb as you dare use.
24:33That's Lowndes in the foreground.
24:35So it's Coulthard at the moment from Winterbottom.
24:37Lowndes.
24:38Courtney.
24:39Winkup.
24:40Van Giz.
24:41Then Davison Reynolds.
24:42Tanner Kremer.
24:43That's your top ten.
24:44There's Alex Davison.
24:45These two cars built by Ford Performance Racing.
24:49Factory team sold by David Richards over the summer from ProDrive.
24:55And ownership now Rod Nash and Rusty French.
24:58And the fourth car at it.
25:00Charlie Schwerthold bringing Gerald Wynn into the picture and running Alex Davison.
25:05Great to have him back.
25:06He ran in the Carrera Cup last year.
25:08Ran strongly.
25:09Third in the championship.
25:10He's a regular front runner.
25:12And remember that he spent significant amount of time with Stone Brothers racing and then sat out last season.
25:18It's a big opportunity for him in a very good car.
25:21Will Davison.
25:22Two orange boxes.
25:23Two personal best.
25:24Sector times.
25:26Second in the race yesterday.
25:28He was fighting a solo Ford fight at the end of the race.
25:33Good job mate.
25:34Straight back in please.
25:35Nice quick in lab.
25:36He'll get number set on.
25:37Two.
25:38Up to two.
25:3921.01.
25:40Russell Ingalls just outside the tent at the moment as well.
25:43He ended up after he tagged the wall.
25:45We saw it in your highlights coverage earlier Matty.
25:48With a broken front anti-roll bar in that car.
25:54They also didn't get the right rear tyre off in one of their stops.
25:57So one of their right rear tyres did two stints.
26:00So he was the walking wounded at the end of it.
26:02But he was actually quite happy with the car.
26:04Well with all that.
26:06To finish inside the top ten.
26:08Ooh.
26:09Okay.
26:10That was a late arrival for Tander then.
26:11They called him late.
26:12And you've got to be careful.
26:13You can be pink for crossing that line at the wrong angle.
26:16There's a few guys this weekend who've lightened the load in their wallets.
26:20So here is Rusty.
26:21I was just about to say.
26:22It's not often you collect a wall around here and finish a race.
26:25Let alone finish inside the top ten.
26:27And it hit quite hard.
26:29We were on board with Scott McLaughlin.
26:30We saw it.
26:31And actually the good thing was for the new specification cars to have that sort of hit
26:36and be able to finish because we sort of thought with the live rear axle
26:39and all the problems we used to have with Watts linkage breaking
26:43and all the issues that were attached to that sort of incident in previous life.
26:48They actually probably stood up at the back of the car better than we thought it would.
26:52So he had double life right rear and tyre on.
26:55I mean if there's one that you have to leave on twice you'd prefer it be the right rear than the left.
27:00It works a little bit harder.
27:01Here's Tander in the replay.
27:02Look at the load that goes through that.
27:04The energy that the car soaks.
27:06The front bumper and wing assembly.
27:08Front guard.
27:09Imagine what the suspension's up to in the middle of all that.
27:11And then it lands.
27:12It's the only place that we go to where they genuinely turn them into freestyle motocross bikes very briefly.
27:18And when they were sitting down talking about...
27:21I was talking to Craig Spencer who was formerly at Mercedes Grand Prix
27:24and he's now down there at Nissan Motorsport and Kelly Racing and he said
27:27you sit down and you start to plot shock graphs and suspension behaviour
27:31and you sit around and have a sensible conversation with your engineers
27:33and then he said then you finish it up and say now what are we going to do about jumping the cars at Adelaide
27:37where the deflection of the suspension is more than a metre a second
27:41and he said when you see numbers like that in a race car you just shake your head and walk away.
27:45Well the major drama down here on pit lane it was always going to happen
27:49just happened a little sooner than anticipated.
27:50I got the word that Engel had a problem.
27:52So Larco runs straight past Marrow Engel's car right at the other end of pit lane.
27:56Notice that Russell Engel is out on the track going around no problem there.
28:00Comes all the way down the pit lane, has a little sit down, has a little breather
28:03to find out they still had those throttle problems they had yesterday.
28:10Remembering these AMG cars have a fly-by-wide system.
28:13So it's not a cable from the accelerator to the throttle body.
28:16It's actually done electronically.
28:18And they're trying to get on top of an issue and I've just noticed
28:20when they departed the pit lane just now the car sounded fine.
28:23Might finally be able to get on with some driving.
28:25And Larco, Craig Lowndes has just backed out of that flying lap.
28:28That was a pretty nervous start because one of the Pepsi cars was coming out of pit lane.
28:33The reason Lowndes backed out of it was a kerb hop.
28:36And Winterbottom the same who's on screen there at the moment.
28:39McLaughlin up to six. That's a great job.
28:41That is a really good lap time there. It's faster than Kremmer.
28:44Here's Scott Pye, Adelaide boy.
28:46Yeah, it's been a big flag-waving exercise for the South Australian this weekend
28:50and it's good.
28:52Watch this.
28:54That's close, wasn't it?
28:56I think Will was doing the right thing there.
28:58He's trying to make sure that he didn't balk Craig on the run.
29:01That's what I was holding my breath for.
29:02You can see what happened with Lowndes.
29:03He had to release the brake and turn into the corner faster than he'd liked
29:06so he didn't get balked.
29:08And that meant that he used too much of the kerb.
29:1023 years of age, Scottie Pye finished top 15 yesterday.
29:14This is one of two Lucas Dumbrell motorsport cars.
29:17He's got Paul Morris, an old campaigner in his corner this weekend.
29:21Paul's doing strategy down there for those guys.
29:23An old head on young shoulders.
29:25But Fabian Coulthard equated his career best qualifying effort yesterday with fourth.
29:30So he is currently in the box seat for his first ever V8 supercar pole position.
29:36This is Alex Prema.
29:39So Fujitsu GRM continuing their strong run.
29:42He's 13th.
29:43But he's already shown a lot of good pace today.
29:46One minute and 43 seconds to go in this session.
29:49Mark Winterbottom stays in third.
29:52There goes Prema up into fifth.
29:54You watch the times come now.
29:56120.933 is the time to beat.
30:00And it belongs to this man.
30:02This is great to see.
30:04Oh no!
30:06Tandar!
30:07Coulthard into Tandar at the final turn.
30:11And Fabian, you could just tell.
30:13He's a moron. That guy is an absolute moron.
30:15Look, yeah, you're not going to get another lap.
30:18So yeah, he's ruined us there. Stupid idiot.
30:21Well, Fabian was just getting ropey there as he came in.
30:24You could see that he was running out of patience with Tandar in front of him.
30:30You don't have to be Einstein to work out that there's no love lost there.
30:33Now, as Mark Winterbottom comes flying past down at turn eight.
30:37Shane Van Gisbergen is the man to watch on the time screens.
30:40He's fourth, but he has lit up the first sector.
30:43I'd love to see the data from Frosty's car in the middle of turn eight there because that thing looked massively quick and committed.
30:50So this looks like it could be a strong lap.
30:52Is it enough for Fabian to hang on or are these guys completing their laps going to knock him off?
30:58Well, this would be good for Mark Winterbottom.
31:00It's two personal best sector times.
31:03Will Davison 120.93 is our new provisional pole sitter.
31:09Can his teammate knock him off? Yes, he does.
31:12Winterbottom goes up, but Van Gisbergen is coming and coming fast.
31:16What's the time for the VIP car?
31:18Here it comes. The Kiwi goes to the top 120.7.
31:22Now it's Jamie Winkup who's on the flyer.
31:25Five seconds to go in this session.
31:27Van Gisbergen could have dual pole positions for this weekend,
31:31but Winkup will have something to say about it.
31:34There's smoke in front of him.
31:36Final part of the circuit for him.
31:38Around right out to the wall.
31:40It was a tough day at the office for the defending series champ.
31:44Yesterday he finished on the podium.
31:47He's got two green boxes.
31:51He's currently 10th.
31:53This is the final throw of the dice for Winkup.
31:56And he just gets to the front row of the grid,
32:00but he cannot knock Shane Van Gisbergen off the top.
32:07That was a great session.
32:09Clock's gone zero, but there are still those to complete their laps.
32:12This is Lowndes.
32:13It's got Pye in the foreground.
32:15Lowndes at the moment is in eighth position.
32:17Yesterday's race winner heaves it up over the curb at the second last corner.
32:21Van Gisbergen is the provisional pole sitter.
32:23The flag greets them.
32:24Winkup, Winterbottom, Davison.
32:26Coulthard, who'll be pretty filthy.
32:28Premar, McLaughlin, Lowndes stays in eighth.
32:31Then Ingle.
32:32Winterbottom's gone up to second.
32:34So it's the same front row as yesterday.
32:36Van Gisbergen and Winterbottom.
32:38Winkup and Davison, second row.
32:40Fabian Coulthard will be filthy.
32:44He will start on fifth.
32:49And that's the first time ever in the Clipsaw 500 since we've had a pole position on the
32:54Saturday and the Sunday that the same person has ended up in position one.
32:58An extraordinary effort from Shane Van Gisbergen to do it twice in a row.
33:03Tony Dalberto will start from 11th.
33:05Rick Kelly, the Nissan Altima in 16th.
33:08So Garth Tander ends up 14th.
33:10And there will be discussions of plenty between Bradley Jones Racing and the Holden Racing
33:16team.
33:17The three Erebus Motorsport cars down the back of the grid.
33:20And Coulthard is wasting no time.
33:22He's heading straight to HRT to let him know exactly what he thinks about it.
33:27He's got a super fast car.
33:29He had no luck yesterday.
33:31And again, he's run out of luck today.
33:34The heat is on.
33:39The heat is on at the Clipsaw 500.
33:46There will be more of that still to come.
33:48Stay with us.
33:49The temperature's rising.
33:51Do you see what I see?
33:52Do you see what I see?
33:53Do you see what I see?
33:58Back to back, pole positions for Shane Van Gisbergen here at the streets of Adelaide.
34:04That is some kind of achievement.
34:05Hasn't been done before in the history of this event since we've had Saturday, Sunday polls
34:11determined by separate sessions.
34:13So it's been a pretty good one for the bank balance.
34:16Five grand in total for the Flying Kiwi.
34:19And the same front row as yesterday, Van Gisbergen will have Mark Winterbottom alongside him.
34:24So this was the big talking point though.
34:26You saw it on the other side of the break.
34:28Fabian Coulthard and Garth Tander squaring off after Coulthard thinks he was blocked.
34:34And Tander thinks it wasn't his problem.
34:37Let's get the final word from both of these and check in with Barrettes.
34:44Oh, look, I was on the lap.
34:45You know, I was under the impression that the headlights were on.
34:48Garth seems to think they weren't, which I don't know.
34:51I can't see the outside of the car.
34:52And we don't have a visual indicator on the inside of the car saying they are or they're not.
34:56But I'm just a little bit disappointed we ruined a very good lap.
34:59You were red hot.
35:00Yeah, that's life.
35:01You know, that's the way it goes.
35:02We know we've got a very good race car.
35:04You know, that's half the battle.
35:05So it's a long race.
35:06Still not a bad starting position.
35:07Good luck this afternoon.
35:09Garth Tander.
35:10We were trying to listen on what you're saying there.
35:12Obviously, mate, give us your read on that little situation.
35:14Well, the deal is, if you've got your headlights on, everyone gets out of each other's way.
35:18Fab didn't have his headlight on.
35:19I was lining up to start a lap.
35:21Turned me around.
35:22So didn't get enough time even to get around to get a second lap.
35:24So if he had his headlights on, no problems.
35:26I'll get out of his way.
35:27And it's my mistake.
35:28But he didn't have his headlights on.
35:29That's the driver's agreement.
35:30That if you've got your headlights on, you stay out of each other's way.
35:32His headlights weren't on.
35:33I didn't know he was on all that.
35:34He turned me around.
35:35He had nothing to gain by turning me around other than piss me off.
35:37But he's done a pretty good job of that.
35:39So long race.
35:40We'll see what happens this other way.
35:41All right.
35:42Thanks for the heads up, buddy.
35:43Awesome performance.
35:44First time anyone's grabbed pole on both days at Clipsaw.
35:46Oh, really?
35:47That's cool.
35:48We've never had a proper pole position before this weekend.
35:50So to have two is really good.
35:51It was disappointing into yesterday with the gearbox.
35:54But if I put it in gear at the start line, we might be able to take off this time.
35:58So hopefully a good race today as well.
36:01Good luck with that.
36:03Cheers.
36:04And we've got a career pole position for Shane Van Gisberg.
36:06And interestingly enough, the Fabian Coulthard Garth Tanner situation, that replay there
36:12showed that in fact, Tander had his headlights on and Fabian didn't.
36:16So a little bit more to play out in the course of the race this afternoon.
36:18And speaking of racing, let's do it now with the V8 Utes.
36:22And to take you through this one, George Madiki is alongside Aaron Noonan.
36:25Noons.
36:26He's jumped out of the Dunlop series yesterday, Matty.
36:27We've dragged him into the con box and we've got Nathan Priddy and Andrew Fisher
36:30who've won the two races so far to square off.
36:32But it's a couple of young guys in the top ten who've caught our eye.
36:34Well, that's it.
36:35Really impressive.
36:36You know, Jesse Dixon on debut in the Heyman-Reese Ute.
36:38And Elliot Barber as well, you know, filling the first four rows.
36:41I think it's pretty cool to see those guys up front.
36:43Some of the fast guys are going to have to work their way through.
36:45This grid is a combined result.
36:47One man who won't be there is Kim Jane.
36:49That car was too badly damaged in the race that we showed you on Friday.
36:52He is out for the weekend, so we've lost one Ute.
36:55For the final race in the opening round of the Auto 1 V8 Ute Series,
36:59it will be Holden and Ford.
37:00We'll get it started when we come back to the streets of Adelaide.
37:03Slide over here and give me a moment.
37:08The moves are so raw.
37:10I've got to let you know.
37:12I've got to let you know.
