00:00Welcome back to the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the Qantas Australian Formula
00:14One Grand Prix. Beautiful sight here too. 33 degrees, pretty warm, about 55 degrees
00:19down on the track. You can see the V8 supercars lined up and ready to go. Still having a little
00:24bit of trouble getting the remnants of qualifying from the Formula Ones. The Jordan of Young,
00:29truly still out on the track. There it is, right there, the famous yellow colours. And
00:34Deiano, who did very well in qualifying in sixth position, has his car still there. So
00:39that's what's holding up proceedings at the moment. They'll soon yank that car off the
00:43track and all be in readiness for the local heroes going around. Well, of course, the three
00:48big names, Mika Hakkinen, David. As we wait for the cars to go to the parade lap, Greg Murphy
00:52in car number 12, that's the Kmart Holden. He did the fastest lap yesterday, but he's back
00:58in 26 spots. So there were some really funny things happened in that race yesterday. Some
01:03of the top drivers got boxed up. And when, Alan, you look back at the other end of the
01:07grid, there's a lot of big names there. There is, Daz, and that's going to be, I think,
01:11one of the highlights of this race. It's going to be very interesting to see them try and
01:14get through. This young fellow from New Zealand, they won Bathurst last year. Stephen Richards,
01:19Jimmy Richards' son, put in a great performance to win Australia's premier touring car race.
01:23Yes, he spent time over in Europe last year working with the Nissan team and the British
01:28Touring Car Championship. He was the test driver for the team, but no pace for him this year.
01:31So he's back with you. Well, when you look back, Craig Baird is another name that's new
01:35to a lot of the Australians, a very good New Zealand driver. He's back there. Jason Barguana,
01:40who on his day is just about capable of beating anybody his way back. So there could be plenty
01:44of action. There's Glenn Seaton, the man that won the race last time for Ford. And that was
01:49the first time that the boys raced here in Melbourne. And let's see if Glenn can do that
01:54again. This always amuses me. It's compulsory to wear a balaclava because of international
01:59rules. But most of the guys have the balaclava, so the whole face is completely unprotected.
02:05It defeats the object of wearing a balaclava, John. I can't understand why anybody would want
02:09to wear an open-faced helmet. I know these cars get very hot, but the extra protection provided
02:13by the full-faced helmet plus the balaclava is just so much more worth it.
02:18Larry Perkins, a name, John, that you're familiar with. He's been around the scene for a long
02:22time, you know, but I said to him yesterday, are you ready? He said, I've been on the rev
02:25living all day. He said, I'm ready to go. Larry, I was teammates with him away back in 77
02:29for a couple of races. And the only thing that's changed is the lenses and his glasses have
02:33gotten thicker, I think. That'd be almost impossible, wouldn't it? Well, there we are. And a new paint
02:39scheme for the Holden team. The official Holden team looks great. As we look back into the
02:45car, Paul Radicevic there. Now, he was very fast yesterday and very aggressive. They had
02:50a bit, he and Marks gave that a bit of a tangle up, and that's the reason why they're back
02:54a little bit today. But OG showed some aggression. Paul is a very, very good driver. I mean, he
02:59won the World Touring Car Championship twice. He drove in my team a couple of times in New
03:03Zealand three or four years ago and just literally hopped into the car and within laps was
03:09right on the button. We'll go through the grid for you shortly, so you bring up the
03:13speed. But there's the new Holdens. I like them, John, in the red colour with the blue
03:17and white. They look very, very smart this year. In fact, the paint jobs on all of the
03:20cars are credited to the teams. They look terrific. Well, I mean, the Americans can't believe the
03:26sort of horsepower we're getting out of these V8s. I mean, they're five litres. They're only
03:30allowed to rev them to 7,500, and they're 10 to 1 compression. So in theory, we should
03:35really hit a brick wall in terms of development. These guys now are getting well in excess
03:38of 630 brake horsepower. Pretty remarkable. The Caltex car there of Tony Longhurst, the
03:43Ford. That's a really nice paint scheme there, too. And now he doesn't have the responsibility
03:48now of owning the team, so maybe he can just settle back and we can see some of the drives
03:52we used to see in those little BMWs. Tony's a very talented and very quick driver, and I
03:56think now that all he's got to do is rock up and concentrate on actually just driving
03:59the car as opposed to organising transporter wages, mechanics and so forth, I think we'll see
04:04a very much improved Tony Longhurst this year. Craig Lowndes now as he's warming up
04:09the tyres. Craig Lowndes was pretty quick yesterday, but he got beaten off the line, then he got
04:13boxed up a couple of times and just couldn't force his way through. He, Scaife and Radicic
04:18had a ding-dong battle for second and third. It was really on. The Holden's passed in the
04:23two corners to go. They went wide and Radicic went through and got second. Now when you see the
04:28cars weaving all over the place like this, a lot of people, you know, don't think it's necessary,
04:31but it really is. What it does, it flicks the wall of the tyre and generates heat through the tread,
04:37and as I said before, these cars are generating over 600 brake horsepower. They weigh 1,350 kilos,
04:43and the warmer you can get those tyres, the better when the green light comes on. There's
04:47the grid up for you now. Tandascafe, Radish, Lownes, Ingle and Perkins there. The main players up
04:52front, but look, really, that can all change. Bauer Johnson, Longhurst, Larkham, Seton,
04:57Ellery. He was a star here last year, Stephen Ellery, really did very well. Stephen Richards
05:01is back a fair way, but we've explained that. Johnny Faulkner, Paul Morris, another new face
05:05here. Paul Will going very well, the young fellow. Neil Crompton back in the Ford,
05:10and as we go through Romano, Ashby, McDougall, McLean, Reid, Kelly. It's a healthy field,
05:14miss. Terrific to see so many cars turned out in such a great atmosphere here. Sam Newman,
05:21well, he's really stepped up a class. He's with the big boys now. Murphy, Bagwana, Baird,
05:26Forbes, and Brad Jones at the back. He had plenty of bad luck yesterday. His car looks sensational.
05:31Really is well turned out, and he's so excited to be in the V8s, but there's a bit of a learning
05:36curve to get the car up to speed. I mean, there is really a black art to getting these things to go
05:41quick. I mean, having said what I said before about having a fairly basic formula in terms of
05:461,350 kilos, 5-litre engine, blah, blah, blah. Really now, all the advancement is being made
05:51through shock absorber technology because the cars are all that close in terms of specification. So
05:57where you get the gains is shock absorbers, and that's why HRT are really being quite successful.
06:03They do have this fantastic link up to Arrows, and they can really draw on a lot of the Formula 1
06:07technology. Through Tom Horton. Exactly. Well, John, I mean, you look at touring cars and sports cars
06:13in different categories all around the world. This is unique to Australia, but there's getting
06:17a lot of overseas interest now to take these cars offshore. Well, what I think is fantastic
06:22is you've got a grid of 40 cars here. It's unbelievable where back in the UK, the touring
06:26car championship really has been a diminishing championship. We've lost factory team after
06:31factory team, and they have to now come up with another kind of formula to try and draw those
06:35manufacturers back in. But here, I feel 40 cars on a grid. I mean, it's just unbelievable.
06:41Yeah, and that's my invitation, John. I mean, there's a lot more cars out and around in Australia
06:45that didn't actually come here because as it was, they had to introduce a draw, a wildcard
06:50system where a Vesco or the governing body could choose two, and then the organizers could choose
06:55two. And that was it. I mean, there are lots of good runners out there that didn't get a Guernsey.
07:01But the main thing to me is it's great entertaining. It's the best entertaining motor racing with a
07:05roof on I've seen. Well, the unfortunate part is that Australia is so far away, and the costs of getting
07:11cars to, say, England and jointly and to the USA is enormous. But by gee, if we could pull it off,
07:16it'd be great. It certainly is. But I tell you, I mean, make no mistake, this is not cheap motor
07:21racing. To run one of these cars successfully for a year, you're looking at well over a million
07:25dollars. And then there's no guarantees that you're going to keep up with the factory cars.
07:29Coming up to the grid now, Garth Tander, car 34, Valvoline Cummings car. Gee whiz, they've put a
07:36great package. The engine in this car is very strong.
07:39Yeah, it was last year. They've never, ever suffered in the horsepower department.
07:42And having said keeping up with the factory teams, Garth Tander's currently in front of them.
07:46Yeah, Gary Rogers, he's put a very, very good package together last year. It was consistent.
07:51And they've really picked up where they left off. And the young Garth Tander, he was just
07:56almost unbeatable yesterday. He dictated the pace, dictated the race. And look at that crowd.
08:02People have been in and out. Remember the Formula 1s have run. So people now moving around the circuit.
08:06It's just been marvelous. A record crowd yesterday. And I think we've got pretty close today. Remember,
08:12so hot here. And we've had so much rain all around the rest of Australia. The weather perfect at the
08:17moment. Just some fluffy white clouds. Lovely blue sky. Heat haze coming off the grid. Very
08:22hot inside these cars as we get set to start. Race two of a three race series. They'll be back on deck
08:28tomorrow. The Formula 1 mechanics always come out when the V8 start to fire up. They love these cars.
08:34They really love the way that they dance around corners. Green flag from behind. Wait for the start.
08:39Will it be Skate? Will it be Tander now? Rebs build up. What about Lowndes? What about Russell
08:44England? Will he do a dive out? Here they go now. Underway. Tander. Tander moves across.
08:49Tander at the moment buries it down. Skate comes up the inside. Radishitz. Radishitz with a good start.
08:53Wait for the first corner. Skate goes under medium. Skate will take it. Tander gets passed off.
08:58And he's off wide now. Yeah, Stephen Johnson went off as well. I think really Garth should have
09:04let him have that corner a little bit earlier because it was quite obvious that Skate he was on the inside.
09:08There was no way he was going to go around the outside. He would have been better off to have backed
09:11off a little bit and got on with it. Yeah, I agree with that a lot. It's allowed Paul Radishitz to
09:15come up into second place but he's under pressure as well. But look at that field. Three of rest
09:19that's going into turn four. Everybody's through at the moment and not too many scratches on the cars
09:24but Tander got hassled and massled off that corner now. Mark Skate gets it up and running. Paul Radishitz,
09:30he's lifted up his skirts and he's starting to trot too. And they had a ding-dong battle. These three cars
09:35actually, when you look, who's behind him? Great. Bows under brakes here. Look at this.
09:39That's Seton. Or Cedar or Croft or one or the other. I think it was Seton. Yeah, I think it was.
09:46So through they go and have a look at this. As I said, these three cars yesterday really,
09:52really got into it and allowed Tander to win under brakes again. Wow, the Ford having a lot of trouble
09:57as it gets on them. He's lost all his downforce obviously from the front but there, I don't know
10:02whether there's any mechanical problems there but he certainly would have lost a lot of his downforce.
10:06And he's just getting boxed in. He's got the bodywork dragging against the wheel.
10:09He can't steer the car properly. It may be trapped under one of the wheels which means
10:12he can't brake properly. He just has to get out of the way. Holden, Ford, Holden and Holden.
10:17That's the way it reads at the moment. Johnny Bowne has Mark Larkham all over the back of him
10:21as Larkham now pulls out for a little look. Larkham obviously did a very, very good start.
10:26It's a scape car to Radicic and then it's Craig Lounge and this is how they were yesterday,
10:33climbing all over each other. Then it's Russell Ingle comes in. Larry Perkins has moved up there too.
10:38Larry loves this place. He loves the street circuit, doesn't he? Well, his teammate even
10:42loves it more because I think as you said before, he won seven times in a row. So Russell is a real
10:47street fighter. Seven races in a row here. That's a record. But look at Craig Lounge. He's definitely
10:52trying to get past Radicic and Heath yesterday were locked together and Lounge wants to be ahead.
10:56Scape now gets a little bit of breathing space as they come down there. He fires it through the
11:00corner now. Mark Scape really made a mistake yesterday. He got boxed up. He actually got
11:05pushed off. Then he got back into a strong position and overcooked it on a corner and let him through
11:10again. He won't make that mistake this time around. But Radicic is now under fire from Lounge and
11:15have a look at Ingle, the man they call the enforcer, all over the back having a look.
11:19Well, of course, Lounge will be desperate to get past Paul Radicic because he can see his teammate
11:23just driving ever so slightly away into the distance. So he really does have to get past
11:27him fairly quickly. Only a huff and puff with the Holden Racing team now. The new colours very,
11:33very fast. See, they look a lovely package. And Radicic's now have a look. They're all closing up
11:37behind. It's almost like he's holding the rest of them up. Yes, he is. And in fact, I'm surprised
11:42Craig has been a little bit more impatient and just try to just ease the back of that board a little bit
11:46further around than it would normally be and take advantage of. Although it doesn't happen
11:50at all the time, but it would happen here. Looking back now, as you can see from Paul
11:56Radicic's car, that's Craig Lowndes almost kissing the wall, moving all over the circuit. And it's a
12:02great angle here because that's where Paul's been. Of course, that's where Craig's going. But as you see,
12:08the fences and just watch how close they brush their way around, just lifting the car up and over the
12:13ripple strip. It's a terrific sight. Yeah, I mean, it's very impressive. One of the things that was
12:16mentioned in the Grand Prix practice is sitting too low. Is it a problem to sit too low on one of
12:20these cars, Alan? No, I don't think so, John. I mean, like always, you try and get as low and as
12:25far back as you can to get the weight in the central position. But what they try and do now is they try
12:31and move the driver as far away from the door as possible. That's to get the weight into the centre of
12:35the car. That's within the regulations, of course. And it's also a safety issue because if you get
12:39T-bone, you just have a little bit further away from the intrusion bars at the side.
12:43Positions unchanged at the moment as they pour their way back onto the main straight again.
12:47And this is where the mumbo stakes come into it now. Look at the whole racing team now go,
12:51really flashing down over that start-finish line is Mark Scaife. And he's just building that lead
12:56now ever so slightly, lap after lap. Yeah, but it's interesting to see that Reddish's, oh, look, I mean,
13:02Craig Lowndes really does gather him in quite well under brakes. But Reddish just hasn't really
13:07suffered in the horsepower department. I don't remember Bathurst. Oh, here we go.
13:11All wheel. All wheel. All wheel. He's a great young talent, this fellow, though. Gee, he's been
13:15impressive at Phillip Island and yesterday looked pretty good too, but he won't be doing much more
13:19in that car at this race. No, that's out. But I've seen before, if you looked at Reddish's at
13:23Bathurst last year, I mean, I tell you what, he was parking, passing cars like they were parked
13:27down that straight. I mean, that thing has got plenty of horsepower. I asked him about that
13:31yesterday in the paddock, actually, and Mark Scaife was standing about four meters away and he turned around
13:36and he said, well, whatever mumbo he's got, as he said, we've got the package to do it. Well, so far,
13:41that's the way it looks. Well, I mean, having said that, HRT have never suffered in the horsepower
13:45department, but they have got the overall package. I mean, they have got the, as I mentioned before,
13:50the shock absorbers and the handling of the horsepower. They've all got it together and,
13:54I mean, they really are, were and still the team to be. Winding away around Albert Parks and
14:01telemetry coming out of the cars now, John, interesting? Yeah, it's very interesting to
14:05see because there's a big old lump of a car, 1,350 kilograms up to 240 kilometers per hour is
14:10impressive. Top speeds around here are pretty impressive too for such a big car.
14:17Well, also stopping them as well, there's, I mean, 1,350 kilos, I mean,
14:21at 600-odd brake horsepower, I mean, that's pulling up a lot of weight. So those brakes do get a lot of
14:27punishment. I just noticed there that cloud looks a little darker. Maybe that's coming out of the
14:34lens of the camera because of the distortion there, but I hope we don't see any storm clouds
14:39because it's just been white fluffy clouds all day. As we wake our way around this winding
14:43black ribbon of track here at Albert Park, people packed in all around. The mechanics come out onto
14:49the field here, onto the grid pit wall. They love these things as we make their way back up the main
14:54straight again and Scaife bunders past the start-finish line and heads on his way around to
14:59the city centre. I think what happens is that Craig just can't get the run on the Falcon coming out of
15:04the corners. He certainly seems to be better under brakes, but Paul does the damage coming out of
15:09the corners, and by the time they get into the braking area, Craig's just not close enough to take
15:12advantage of it. Probably the calmer steering race I've seen around the streets. Well, so far it is,
15:17but Paul Radisic keeping Craig lines at bay, and really what Craig only can do is just drop back
15:22a little bit to try and get a run on Radisic, but it's just almost impossible. It's a very tight
15:27circuit and the cars are so evenly matched. So Mark Scaife, now he's the hare and the rest the
15:32hounds are chasing. We'll take a break, come back. Stay with us wherever you're watching,
15:35right around Australia. We're at Albert Park, and it's lovely to have your company.
15:49Looking down now from Albert Park, as you can see, the positions are unchanged. Scaife, Radisic,
15:54Lowndes, Ingle, Perkins, Tander, Bauer, Johnson, Young Johnson. Gee, he's adapted well, you know. He's
15:59sat back a long time waiting for Dad to move out of the seat, but he's going very well. Yeah, I met
16:04him last weekend up on surface, and it's interesting to meet a young guy whose Dad's a very famous
16:08father. Well, as you quite rightly said, Daz, I mean, he really has been sitting in the sidelines for
16:14three or four years. Dad had just given him the odd drive at the long distance races, and I think Dick
16:18has really brought him on very, very sensibly indeed, and Stephen is as good a driver as anybody out
16:24there at the moment. Yeah, well, he's really pleased to be here, and it's his first time around here.
16:28That carnage there, that's from where Paul Wheel, you saw earlier, went across the track.
16:32Jeez, put some litter and dust and dirt there. That'd be difficult. Yeah, it's not very pleasant.
16:36They've only got a single line through that. Not that you can really pass into turn 14.
16:41Now, looking back from Paul Radisic's car, that's Craig Lounge you're looking at there,
16:45trying to climb all over top him. As we said, Paul is holding them back. There's no doubt about that.
16:49Watch it under brakes there, because AJ's been saying how well Craig Lounge gathers him up under brakes,
16:55but just can't get past him. Here we go. The damage has already been done coming out of the corner,
17:01though, and Craig just can't get close enough to get a run down the inside, but there's five
17:06Holdens there at the moment and one Ford, so he's really holding the Ford flag up for them.
17:11When you look back at that car, John, what are you looking at there, the way the attitudes and the way
17:15they're sitting themselves on the circuit? I'm just looking at, I think, the sheer frustration of
17:19Craig Lounge. He hasn't got the horsepower to be able to take any advantage, and Paul Radisic is
17:23doing a great job of defensive driving to secure second place. That's looking from Craig Lounge's
17:28point of view as he looks at Paul Radisic now. As you go through the beautiful tree line part of
17:33the park here at Albert Park, looking down there, the trees are blocking your view, and look at Lounge
17:37all over the back of Radisic now. Just gets out a little bit sideways now, giving it as much as he
17:42can to try and get right on his tail and then just pop out and get past. I see Russell
17:47Ingle has got his headlights on. I mean, there's probably a bit of psyching going on there, just
17:51to, whoop, here we go, a bit of understair. Steve Reid. Yeah, there are privateers. They've been
17:57racing V8 racing for years and years and years, and Trevor Ashby and Steve Reid, they share the
18:02drive of that car, and very professional, well-turned-out privateers. Yeah, they enjoy their motor
18:07racing too. Here we go now. We're running out of laps as the touring cars make their way around
18:12Albert Park yet again, but Mark Scaife out in front. There's the gap. There's first, second, third,
18:17fourth, fifth and sixth. Take Scaife out of this. Here's a go. He's got a scream of a race. Here we go.
18:21He just couldn't get close enough. I thought he might have had a bit of a look down the inside,
18:24but Paul. Paul, touch. Yeah, well there you go. Paul actually moved over and stopped him from,
18:29which he's entitled to do, of course. Well, he's having up. I think he's getting a bit bored. He says,
18:32come on, get on with it. Either let me pass or put the pedal down. As you said, you can see Scaifey
18:38getting away from him, and look at the rest all bunched up behind him. And they know they're running out of laps.
18:43They've got no choice just to sit there. Other than that, if Craig Lyons can force the issue with
18:47Paul Radicich, then Russell Ingle's going to be reading that. And on the case, before Craig
18:51Lyons looks past it, there'll be Russell Ingle ahead of him as well. Well, that's exactly right,
18:55John, because what normally happens is that Craig's so preoccupied trying to get past Paul Radicich,
19:00he forgets sometimes the guy behind him, and Russell can just sneak through. And Russell's
19:04such a great winner here. Too many seasons. He's the person who got the headlights on,
19:08trying to cause the psychology. And Craig Lyons will just forget about him being there.
19:12Four laps to go now. Scaife still with a handy lead. Paul Radicich second. So it's Holden
19:17forward, Holden, Holden, Holden. All you can see is Holden. Only one lone forward in there at the
19:21moment. And this pack have really broken away from the rest of the group now, as Scaife starts to
19:26build again that little lead. And of course, all this is just helping him, because whilst the rest
19:31are all boxed up behind the Radicich forward, he's just driving away merrily. Well, that's right,
19:36because what's happening is Paul's taking a defensive line, which is not the optimum line,
19:40which is not the quickest line. And of course, he's holding the guys up behind him, which is
19:44allowing Scaife to get away. I think the other thing they've got to keep in mind is that all
19:48these guys are piling up, going over to Perth for a race next week. They don't want to get too involved
19:53in maybe physical damage with a car in a race, which doesn't count in the championship.
19:57That's all been said before, John, but it never seems to work that way.
20:01But they are, they're keeping themselves off the walls at the moment. So Paul Radicich now
20:06lounge getting frustrated. You saw the tap, the lap before he decided to come on, get on with it
20:11or get out of the way and let us go. All right, we'll take a break. We'll be back for the finish
20:15of this one. Can they catch Mark Scaife? Time will tell back shortly.
20:31Welcome back. Well, some changes behind Mark Scaife. He's still in front. Paul Radicich is
20:36still second, but well, there's been a bit of action behind. Whilst we're away, we'll bring you
20:40up the date with the pitchers. Still Scaife at the moment. There's Paul Radicich. That's one
20:46and two. Then it's Craig Lowndes back in third. Then Russell Ingle. Ingle had a big surge up
20:52under brakes. And to have a look, here's Lowndes coming up, AJ. This was the start of it.
20:57Well, this is what I was telling you. See, he's preoccupied about getting past Paul. Back steps
21:01out a little bit because a bit too much back for Bryce on the back. He has to come off the accelerator
21:06to save the spin. He loses his momentum and Russell's able to get a run on him out of the
21:10corner. And that's just classic overtaking. Russell Ingle saw that situation from before.
21:17But look, there's the problem. Russell Ingle had. Russell run over debris. He's cut a tire
21:21and suddenly his left front tire is just falling apart. Yeah, that's a real shame because the
21:26interesting fact would have been with three laps to go, could Russell have caught Radicich? And if he
21:31did, would he have been as gentlemanly about it as Greg Lowndes? I wouldn't think so. Mark Scaife
21:36at the moment though, winding his way round. And there's how they run the moment. Scaife Radicich,
21:41it's Lowndes, Perkins, Tander and Young Johnson now coming up into the leaderboard. So he's done a
21:46good job. Mark Scaife seems to be going pretty well at the moment. Nine laps down out of a 10 lapper,
21:52two to go. I'm sorry, there is eight laps down to this, two to go. A bit of time yet. Paul Radicich
21:57now. Can he wind it up? Can he get close? Well, he's just done the quickest lap. So he's,
22:01um, he's just, uh, done about 0.2 of a second quicker than Scaife. So he's definitely at this
22:06stage lapping a little quicker. Yeah. He was over two seconds behind. Uh, Mark Scaife
22:10and now it's down to 1.5 seconds. And Paul Radicich having a last. Whoa. Whoa. Big Kev.
22:15That's Paul Morris getting right up on two wheels. Plenty of grip there. Big Kev. Well,
22:20he's got the cleanest car on the joint, if nothing else. He should have had Big Kev in the passenger seat.
22:24It wouldn't have happened. Getting way up on two wheels. He was a lucky boy then. Yes,
22:29it was. That's a good one again. Just caught the tires on the inside. Weren't up, did the wall of
22:33death act, but managed to get it back. And, uh, well, whoever Big Kev is, he's certainly held it
22:37there. Well, he's quite a character here on Aussie TV. He's big. He is big. Some might say even huge.
22:45All right. Down they come. Mark Scaife, Paul Radicich. They've got a gap now. There's no,
22:50no doubt about that as they come through and Tanner's still there. Larry Perkins starting to make his move.
22:57Larry, I mean, you don't see much of him till the end of the race, but he's usually hanging around.
23:01Well, actually, Tanner's passed Perkins, so he's got a bit of spurred on towards the end as well.
23:05He was behind Larry Alapago. Strung out, as you see, right around the park now. Mark Scaife knew
23:12how critical it was to get away. He said yesterday he made the mistake of getting boxed up behind
23:16everybody. And he said, if you get into the dog fight, well, you know, you can go and get burned.
23:20And he did. He got pushed off the track actually by Paul Radicich, fought his way back and then
23:25under brakes. The car slid out and two cars passed him. He wasn't about to do the same thing today.
23:30So he's looked nice and smooth. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a quicker slap come up
23:34for Tanner. He is. He's passed Larry and he's pulling out. We'll keep our eye on that as Garth
23:42Tanner. You saw him just come into shot there as Mark Scaife comes back up onto the main straight.
23:46Now, Paul Radicich looks a little bit closer this time around. There's Tanner as he comes on
23:51in third. So there's one, two, and three. And Larry Perkins all over the back of him.
23:57This last lap now.
24:01Steven Johnson, he's off. Whoops.
24:04Gee whiz, that was a bad saver off the wall.
24:07Well done, Steve. You got away with that one.
24:08But by only just a few of them, let me just see.
24:12Dick would have been sitting in the garage going, oh no. Here we go again. Watch this,
24:16onto the grass. I think he was helped a little bit. I think, yeah, I don't know who it was,
24:20but I think he was given a little bit of help there.
24:23Just comes across the marbles, gets it back, gets some grip back on the grass again. He's been
24:28on every surface imaginable. Mark Scaife out in front. We're on the final lap now. So it looks
24:32like race two is going to go to the Holden Racing team as Mark Scaife. Garth
24:36Canada won the first event yesterday. Another race coming away tomorrow. And it's been a bit of
24:41a tame affair this time around, but I'm sure, oh, talk about tame. Well, he got off all those
24:46surfaces and then finally ended up in the track. Well, that may have been the legacy of being off
24:52the circuit and having some dirt and muck on the tyres, and he may have gone into the very next turn
24:58and not have had the grip that he had before. Well, he did. As I said, he came off the marbles
25:02on the bitumen and back onto the grass again. And here we go. This is what happened.
25:09That one looks to me like it was all done to Steve. I'm afraid he didn't get tapped that time.
25:12He's in the gravel and that's his race over. And a shame to end up that way because he's been pretty
25:17impressive first time round here in the V8, looking forward to the season and settling down and being a
25:23full-time driver with his dad's team. But it's all Mark Scaife going through some of the rubble
25:28that's been left there. I think that's a poor wheel spin that threw all of that dirt and grass back
25:32up onto the track now. But he's pretty comfortable the way he settled down. It looks like Paul Radish
25:36is to me. He's settled down and said, well, second's better than third. I'll take that. But Mark Scaife
25:41driving brilliantly today. He really has been quick all weekend. As I said, he probably got out muscled
25:46yesterday. Bit of bad luck. But as he streaks his way up now to the start finish line, lights go on.
25:51It's Holden Racing Team. They'll come in at home with Mark Scaife first. Paul Radish in second.
25:57Garth Tan will be third. Larry Perkins will be fourth as the rest of the field stream around now,
26:02coming onto the main straight to finish this race. But Mark Scaife now adds to his list of wins here
26:10as he comes around. An impressive drive today. One more to go tomorrow, folks. We'll see him back
26:15on track tomorrow prior to the Grand Prix. And that man will be ruining his altercation on Friday
26:21because, really, he should have been the favorite for Friday's round as well. So one to go tomorrow.
26:25Well, that's the under... Well, you know, the under thing that can happen in motor racing is that,
26:29I mean, he looked a certain winner yesterday and really got shuffled back along the pack just by,
26:34and no mistake of his own, he just got hustled out of the way. But a good win today.
26:38He'd be pretty happy with that. And those cars look really magnificent today and went for a great
26:42season with the V8s here in Australia this year. So let's recap the results for you.
26:46It's Mark Scaife. Paul Radisic was second. Good dice early there. Garth Tander,
26:50good drive to get up into third. Remember, he was on the front row of the grid on pole.
26:55Larry Perkins, Craig Lowndes and Mark Larkham. They make up the top six places.
27:06And that's how the finish. We'll take a break. We'll be back shortly.
27:09A lot more action coming your way here on Nine's White World of Sports.
27:16Nine's whip.
27:29Yeah.
