00:00:00That's the
00:00:29Kapahaka, the cultural dance of the Maori people performed by the students of the Pukekohe North School.
00:00:35So we've got 27 cars gridded up and ready to attack this raceway, this 2.9 kilometre raceway for race eight of the championship, the first of two today.
00:00:48And a wonderful sense of atmosphere, a huge crowd here.
00:00:53Jamie Winkup will start from pole position.
00:00:55Time for the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems, performed by St Kentergern Girls' School.
00:01:04Australians, oh let us rejoice, for we are young and free.
00:01:11With golden soil and wealth for toil, our home is girt by sea.
00:01:20Our land abounds in nature's gifts, of beauty rich and rare.
00:01:29In history's page let every state advance Australia fair.
00:01:37In joyful strains and let us sing, Advance Australia fair.
00:01:57Iwi matora, ata wakarohona, mea roa noa.
00:02:10Kia ua kote mai, kia tatoa ta fai, mana akiti amai, ate aroa.
00:02:30God of nations, at thy feet, in the bonds of love we meet.
00:02:39Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land.
00:02:49God Pacific's triple star, from the shots of strife and war.
00:02:58Make her praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand.
00:03:09A beautiful job by those young ladies from St Kentigern Girls' School and a proud moment
00:03:18too for a very proud Kiwi, somebody who we know well, Paul Radisic, his young daughter
00:03:23Amelia was performing there in the back row.
00:03:26So, wonderful rendition of both God defend New Zealand and Advance Australia Fair.
00:03:31We have a wonderful link with New Zealand and we also love this circuit, Krompo.
00:03:35It's great to have it back for the first time in six years.
00:03:38Pukakoe Park Raceway, 40 kilometres south of Auckland.
00:03:41New and improved for 2013 with the inclusion of now turns five, six and seven.
00:03:47Really spiced up the show down there, the track's considerably safer and we've got a new lap record holder.
00:03:53Mark Winterbottom achieved that yesterday, it was a fantastic run in the race.
00:03:57Right, some controversy in qualifying earlier for race nine a little bit later on and involved
00:04:04this guy, Alex Davidson, sitting in the car now.
00:04:06We'll talk to him in a minute, but before we do, let's just have a look at this vision
00:04:10with Mark Winterbottom and the interaction post-qualifying.
00:04:13Have a look at this.
00:04:14I'll chat to you when everyone's not here, come on, come out the back and I'll talk to you.
00:04:29What do you want?
00:04:34I didn't run off the track, I had to go because there was no other space.
00:04:40Sorry.
00:04:41Sorry, it happened to me too.
00:04:47Now, the other thing we need to remember, they're all out of the same garage effectively.
00:04:51Alex, I hate to talk about this stuff now, we'll get to the positive stuff in a minute.
00:04:54We're just watching the vision of the interaction between you and Mark Winterbottom.
00:04:57Clearly you have a strong view and perhaps rightly so, but he's a little out of order.
00:05:02Regardless of what happens on the track, there's no need to carry on like a pork chop in front
00:05:05of everyone in the pit lane.
00:05:06I said to him, we'll go and have a chat about it out the back, but he wanted to make a big
00:05:11deal out of it when the camera was behind him.
00:05:13So anyway, I'm over it now.
00:05:14I've enjoyed a couple of reasonable qualifying sessions for us and looking forward to the
00:05:18race.
00:05:19Yeah, I couldn't work out if he wanted to take him out the back to talk to him or belt
00:05:21him, but both.
00:05:24Now, mate, just position 10 here and position 8 for this afternoon.
00:05:28Now, look beside me, Craig Lowndes.
00:05:30I look next to me down here as Bridie on pole for the next race.
00:05:33Mate, you're amongst some pretty good competition.
00:05:35You are getting this Falcon sorted out.
00:05:37Yeah, we are.
00:05:37You know, it's up and down a little bit in the early part of the year, but we're definitely
00:05:40getting a hold of it and a big improvement from yesterday.
00:05:42So, you know, it was a good recovery from my crew and from me and Campbell and everyone.
00:05:47So we're pretty happy with our improvement from yesterday.
00:05:51We'll see how the races go.
00:05:52But we're, you know, we're in the right half of the field for sure.
00:05:55Great to see you, mate.
00:05:55Keep up the good work.
00:05:57Well, James Courtney just being strapped in.
00:05:59The cool suits connected, all set to go.
00:06:01JC, you're heading in the right direction, second row of the grid for this race.
00:06:05Yeah, we found a few little things that were wrong in the car that we didn't know overnight.
00:06:08So, tuned her up overnight and the thing's turned into half a jet.
00:06:12So, pretty confident going into today, Brett.
00:06:16It's, you know, yesterday it didn't really go in the afternoon how we wanted.
00:06:19But, you know, good chance to make up some points now.
00:06:22You might have an interesting spectator seat for these two blokes up in front,
00:06:25Widderbottom and Windcup going at each other.
00:06:27Yeah, hopefully they run into each other again and we can nip through.
00:06:30But, look, they're great guys.
00:06:32They've been racing hard and I can't wait to get amongst it.
00:06:35All right, mate.
00:06:35All the very best to enjoy it.
00:06:36Of course, right next door to James is Fabian Coulthard, who has had a spectacular weekend so far.
00:06:41He's on home soil.
00:06:42He's really enjoying it at the moment.
00:06:44Fabian, I know you're all set to go.
00:06:45But great to be here on a fantastic day.
00:06:47And a great view ahead of you.
00:06:48Jamie, Windcup straight ahead.
00:06:50Yeah, look, it's, you know, not a bad qualifying.
00:06:52You know, we're consistently third for both races today.
00:06:55So, you know, hopefully it can't get any worse than yesterday.
00:06:58So we didn't have too much luck.
00:06:59But, you know, chin upwards and upwards and looking forward to going forward.
00:07:03And I know for you guys, the Jason Richards Trophy is the big prize today.
00:07:06Yeah, massive.
00:07:07You know, it's good that Bridie's leading the point so far.
00:07:09Unfortunately, Bridie's a little bit further back.
00:07:11So hopefully he has a good race and gets through the field and gets some good points.
00:07:14But, look, we've got our own race to do.
00:07:15Hopefully we can finish on the podium today.
00:07:17Good luck, Fabian.
00:07:19Hey, Lowndes, call me crazy, mate.
00:07:21But I actually love it when you're about five rows back from the front of the grid.
00:07:25Yeah, good idea.
00:07:26Yeah.
00:07:26I think you're bad luck for me this weekend.
00:07:28Yeah, look, we just didn't get the qualifying right.
00:07:30Made a few little mistakes.
00:07:31And the cars are so competitive at the moment that you only have to make a slight error or adjustment
00:07:36to obviously be a good car or a bad car.
00:07:38But, of course, 35 laps around here.
00:07:40You know what it's like.
00:07:41All right, mate.
00:07:42Well, rip into the Kiwis.
00:07:43Good luck, buddy.
00:07:43Craig Lowndes was on the podium.
00:07:46In the first race of the weekend, the third placing in yesterday at the end of the day
00:07:53didn't finish so well for him as 17th.
00:07:55Some dramas along the way.
00:07:57So the championship point score has Jamie Winkup on top.
00:07:5934 points adrift of Will Davison.
00:08:04Lowndes there in third.
00:08:04And look at Scott McLaughlin at 19 years of age.
00:08:09Mixing it with the big boys.
00:08:10Collected his first ever V8 Supercar Championship victory.
00:08:13If you missed it yesterday, Scotty, at 19 years and 10 months, is the youngest ever man
00:08:18to win a V8 Supercar Championship or Australian Touring Car Championship race.
00:08:23And, boy, didn't the crowd love it.
00:08:29So ahead of us is another 100 kilometres, 35 laps.
00:08:34They do not need to stop for fuel.
00:08:37So it's flat chat to the end.
00:08:39Lee Holdsworth on board the Erebus Motorsport E63 AMG.
00:08:44He was all smiles when he turned up here a few days ago and walked the track before he even
00:08:49got out there behind the wheel.
00:08:51So many of these drivers love this place.
00:08:55It's a real racer's circuit.
00:09:09Fusso starting grid.
00:09:10And we're going to see a Red Bull Holden alongside a Pepsi Max Ford Falcon.
00:09:15It's Winkup versus Winterbottom, as we've seen many times before on the front row of the grid.
00:09:19Row number two, we've got Fabian Coulthard alongside James Courtney.
00:09:22We just spoke to James.
00:09:23He's looking forward to the run.
00:09:25Row number three, position five and six, Will Davis and Alex Premmer continues this strong
00:09:29run this weekend.
00:09:30Yesterday's race six winner, Scott McLaughlin and the fast Kiwi, Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:09:35It's an all Kiwi row four.
00:09:37Row five, nine and ten, Craig Lowndes and Alex Davison, followed by David Reynolds and Jason
00:09:42Brighton.
00:09:42Jason currently leading the points table for the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
00:09:47Yeah, which is handed out to the driver with the most combined points at the end of the
00:09:51four races.
00:09:52And remember that Bridie will start our next race from pole position.
00:09:55So we work our way through the mid-pack.
00:09:57Team Techno, Daryl Lee, Jonathan Webb.
00:10:00This hasn't got a handle on that car this weekend.
00:10:02Russell Engel there has had his dramas along the way as well, but he's always fighting
00:10:05Todd Kelly and the Nissan Ultimate next to him.
00:10:08Team Hyflex has a lot of Kiwis in the garage and a lot of support.
00:10:11Tim Blanchard will be in position 22.
00:10:14There is Holtzworth and Slade, both out of Erebus Motorsport.
00:10:18And David Wall for Wilson Security Racing.
00:10:22We'll have Murrow Engel alongside him.
00:10:24And the fourth Kiwi on the grid is Johnny Reed.
00:10:28We'll bring up the rear from 27.
00:10:30So three out of the four locals are inside the top ten.
00:10:33Coulthard in third.
00:10:35McLaughlin in seventh.
00:10:36And Van Gisbergen in eighth.
00:10:38And there's the Rat.
00:10:38It's always great to see him anytime, anywhere.
00:10:43He's a great bloke.
00:10:44He misses you, Mark.
00:10:46He was a very, very good driver and one of New Zealand's best ever.
00:10:49Great to see he and Patricia and obviously young Amelia there singing the national anthems.
00:10:55Former world touring car champion.
00:10:56He was very, very competitive in his day, wasn't he?
00:11:00Very much so.
00:11:00He would have run you off the road once or twice.
00:11:02He probably had the odd headbutt.
00:11:03But he's a great guy.
00:11:04Great competitor.
00:11:05He's had a great deal of success.
00:11:07And we don't see him in the paddock as often as we'd like.
00:11:10Now here's Jamie Wincup.
00:11:11We're on board with him.
00:11:14Great run for him in qualifying.
00:11:15Quite a few drivers having personal bests as their qualifying performances for this race number eight.
00:11:21James Courtney was one of them.
00:11:23Equaled his best of the year.
00:11:24James Moffat, best run for him.
00:11:29Also Alex Premier had equaled his best performance.
00:11:33Remember we've touched on the leader's curse this weekend.
00:11:36Pole position hasn't been too kind to those who have gained it.
00:11:41Both Jamie Wincup and Mark Winterbottom suffered in race six from the front row of the grid.
00:11:47And I can't wait for this start because Wincup and Winterbottom yesterday
00:11:50was one of the closest front row starts I've ever seen.
00:11:54And they were both perfect to the first corner.
00:11:56And Winterbottom's all fired up.
00:11:58Got drama yesterday.
00:11:59He's had a drama in qualifying today.
00:12:00His blood's high.
00:12:01See what happens.
00:12:03Well, he left Tasmania full of boiling blood as well.
00:12:07As battle resumes at the front.
00:12:09Sunday race day at Pukekohe.
00:12:12Wincup and Winterbottom.
00:12:13As always, there's next to nothing between them.
00:12:18It's going to be an interesting run down to turn one and Frosty gets aggressive early.
00:12:23That was a sensational start.
00:12:25His jump was very good.
00:12:26The secondary part of his start was good.
00:12:28Caught the in third.
00:12:29It's the exit of turn four on this long back straight.
00:12:42Single file down to turn five.
00:12:46He's going to have to go straight ahead unless he can hold on.
00:12:48A rye for him yesterday at the end of the race.
00:12:53And almost again turn five.
00:12:56Playing Mark Winterbottom.
00:12:57But he held on to it.
00:12:59James Courtney almost ran up the rear of Wincup then as well.
00:13:02It's about to speculate.
00:13:03I wonder whether James got into Jamie or whether Jamie did it on his own.
00:13:06It'd be interesting to see that one as it unfolds.
00:13:08That was right on the cusp of being a very big moment for Winterbottom.
00:13:12Because he could have turned in front of the field.
00:13:14That would have created absolute chaos.
00:13:17Up over the rise.
00:13:21And Tony Dalbottom.
00:13:23Deep into the grass.
00:13:25So somehow Winterbottom held on.
00:13:27Same two for Wincup and Courtney.
00:13:30I certainly drove into his back to front.
00:13:34That was wild stuff into turn five.
00:13:36All the wheels locked.
00:13:38And here we go.
00:13:39Back to the same zone again.
00:13:40And Coulthard's putting a lot of pressure on James Courtney.
00:13:44Van Giesbergen on Davison.
00:13:46So this is not over into here.
00:13:49Safety car's going to be deployed here.
00:13:55So the Chrysler and Pedder's STP safety car will intervene.
00:13:58Grab the field.
00:14:00Nobody can pass when those yellow flags come out.
00:14:03Here's the replay of the start.
00:14:05Initially good jump for Wincup.
00:14:07But then it went nowhere and slowly but surely Frosty started to edge across.
00:14:12At this point it wasn't clear.
00:14:14But in the secondary part of the start in second and third gear.
00:14:16He had just enough of the car up there.
00:14:18And right there he put a little squeeze on and it worked.
00:14:20You are right on board.
00:14:28That's Jamie Wincup with Mark Winterbottom.
00:14:31A good start for Shane Van Giesbergen.
00:14:33He's made up two spots.
00:14:35So with the safety car now patrolling, we'll take a break.
00:14:38Well, the faithful have come out in force here to Pukekohe.
00:14:48They just love it.
00:14:49Such wonderful vantage points all the way around the circuit.
00:14:52Up there where we were is one of the great spectacles in motorsport.
00:14:57And this was a really scary moment on the first lap.
00:14:59James, I don't think, was in the back of Jamie at all then.
00:15:03It was basically Wincup.
00:15:04Yep.
00:15:05Jamie by himself.
00:15:06And this is the Dalberto incident with Slade.
00:15:10And on the right-hand side, one of the DJR cars.
00:15:12Oh, and he can't get off.
00:15:14So actually, whoever was in the DJR car there, well, he had nowhere to go.
00:15:20Tony was trying to get off the road, but he didn't realise there was another car there.
00:15:23And Tony's steering at that point, we should point out, it would already have been damaged.
00:15:26It's gone, yeah.
00:15:27So it was already on the fritz by the time he came out of turn eight.
00:15:30So that was Tony Dalberto when we left.
00:15:33He parked on the entry to Pitt Lane, if you like, just to the right.
00:15:36The reason why the safety car was deployed is the debris ripped off the back of that car,
00:15:41parked right in the middle of the circuit.
00:15:43They've now got rid of that.
00:15:44Just an update.
00:15:44This is a slightly awkward recovery, but we're getting on with it.
00:15:48Just keep running at 80.
00:15:51Here we go.
00:15:52Wincup.
00:15:52On board, and bang.
00:15:56There's a little return of serve from yesterday.
00:15:59I love that stuff.
00:16:02It's a good catch by Frosty.
00:16:04By both.
00:16:05He had the wheels locked, and Frosty caught it really nicely.
00:16:08So that's two blokes at the highest level of the game.
00:16:12Bit of gamesmanship early.
00:16:13Doesn't get any better than that.
00:16:17I like how Wincup didn't move the car, because if he moved the car, he would have dived alongside.
00:16:22So he just thought, I'll just give it a bump.
00:16:23We said in the media conference last night, I owe him two.
00:16:26So that was Jamie Wincup on Mark Winterbottom.
00:16:28That might be, well, if not one, it might be half.
00:16:31So there's still one and a half to go.
00:16:33So Tony heads back to pit lane.
00:16:39It's disappointing for Team Hyflex.
00:16:40There's his dad, Al.
00:16:42Had some power steering gremlins early in the weekend.
00:16:44We spoke to him yesterday in the show.
00:16:46So he was in the traffic jam at turn eight.
00:16:53So it'll be another lap under this safety car.
00:16:57Debris off the racetrack, and I didn't think the car was in an awkward spot, but the race
00:17:00director must feel that it is at the moment.
00:17:03So there's going to be this extra lap.
00:17:04So let's just think of the mind games going on here.
00:17:08Winterbottom knew that when you're going to try and get around Wincup, you have to do
00:17:12it as early as you can.
00:17:13He did that, so it was the first box ticked.
00:17:16And then he was all of a sudden being rattled galore down at turn five.
00:17:21And here's a guy I know who won't be very happy, mate.
00:17:22We just saw that bit of vision there, a bit of contact at the back there.
00:17:25Yeah, just concertina into the hairpin there.
00:17:28I mean, first lap of the race, everyone's got to, you know, take it a bit easy.
00:17:31And I just got hit from side to side and then had no steering at all and ended up putting
00:17:34in the fence there.
00:17:35But, you know, guys are just going crazy.
00:17:38Do you think it's the format?
00:17:40I don't think so.
00:17:40I think everyone's, you know, had yesterday to warm into the races.
00:17:44And now they're going, they're trying to make up positions on that first lap because
00:17:47it is hard to pass.
00:17:48But, you know, if you don't make it past that first lap, then you can't do any more, any more
00:17:52passing.
00:17:52So really disappointed.
00:17:53Pretty stupid, actually.
00:17:55Okay, mate.
00:17:55Good luck this afternoon.
00:17:57Well done, Larko.
00:17:58We'll grab another quick break, bring you back for the restart.
00:18:10Perfect time to come back.
00:18:11The safety car has been cleared.
00:18:13Mark Winterbottom has control of the field.
00:18:17He'll be playing as many games as he can to get away from Jamie Winkup on this restart.
00:18:21And already it looks as though he's dropped him considerably.
00:18:26So a fantastic restart from the Ford Performance Racing, Pepsi Max, pilot of Mark Winterbottom.
00:18:34Single file.
00:18:35We always say that safety cars can breed safety cars.
00:18:39Restart fever surfaced yesterday.
00:18:41Okay, let's see how they control this one.
00:18:43Oh, the Mercedes and the Nissan side-by-side through turn one.
00:18:48It's Todd Kelly.
00:18:50That's Tim Slade tucked in behind him.
00:18:52Could have ended a whole lot worse.
00:18:55Murrow Engel just gets a little push alongside by Johnny Reid.
00:19:00And Kultarn is attacking the back of Courtney again as it was right at the start of the race.
00:19:04They're up in turn five now.
00:19:07He'll be looking to try and dive down the inside here at the hand pin.
00:19:10It didn't take long, by the way, for Winkup to claw back.
00:19:17He got the margin back, didn't he?
00:19:18Straight away.
00:19:20So Tander up three positions.
00:19:21Ben Gisberger up two positions.
00:19:23That's a great shot, isn't it?
00:19:30So far.
00:19:31It's turn ten.
00:19:32Right at the bunker we've been making reference to all weekend.
00:19:35And a big slide there for Tander out of turn eleven.
00:19:39And also one of the Nissans.
00:19:41That was Rick Kelly.
00:19:42A little bit wide.
00:19:43In fact, Russell Engel.
00:19:45That curb cam shot that we were looking at a moment ago between turns ten and eleven.
00:19:49And that's about 210 kilometres an hour the speed of the cars across the camera.
00:19:54This is looking rearward from James Courtney's car.
00:19:58That's Fabian Kultarn, the Lockwood entry.
00:20:02Briefly in top gear.
00:20:03You can see that the brake approach to turn five is a gentle right-hand turn on the approach.
00:20:09Makes it quite tricky in Ben Gisberger and went straight ahead down there.
00:20:11Here he is.
00:20:13He was sixth.
00:20:15He's got to try and find the right spot to drop back in.
00:20:18Without making a gain.
00:20:20Quite awkward for the drivers and for the officials for that matter.
00:20:23To manage that problem when you do make a mistake and go ahead down there.
00:20:26Well he's slotted back in.
00:20:28Sixth position behind Will Davison.
00:20:30Ahead of McLaughlin and Premmer.
00:20:33Back on board we go with Courtney.
00:20:38Here's what happened to Shane.
00:20:40So he's got the inside front locked.
00:20:42And whenever you get onto the grass there at that high speed approach.
00:20:46That's a high risk.
00:20:48But he released the brake.
00:20:49Better to do that than put a big little flat spot on that tyre.
00:20:52And he just ran straight ahead.
00:20:54And Neil, I know we share this view.
00:20:55We should make the point that going out of sixth spot and then redressing and coming back in at sixth spot is in fact a gain.
00:21:00Yes.
00:21:01If you've just made a mistake, you've gone off, you should pay a penalty.
00:21:04And that was discussed at the driver's briefing on Friday night.
00:21:07Cameron McConville is the investigating officer and his view is that exactly what you just described.
00:21:14So he would expect you to be at least one spot further back than that.
00:21:17So I'd be curious to see whether or not that's something that is discussed between race control and the team.
00:21:22Here's Will Davison.
00:21:30Just taking an eye to the back of this little pack is David Reynolds.
00:21:35He was pressuring Alex Davison for a bit.
00:21:38And now Reynolds and there they are.
00:21:41Reynolds and Jason Bright are having an awesome battle.
00:21:43They were doing that side-by-side stuff at turn eight.
00:21:47And it went on there between turns 10 and 11 in the last two corners of the racetrack.
00:21:51And so Bright's now got a spot on David.
00:21:55David's car looked awful at a couple of those shots.
00:21:57It was jumping wildly.
00:21:59Well, they had a battle.
00:22:01Crompeau, they swapped positions twice.
00:22:07Take much if you get offline and get yourself out of rhythm.
00:22:09Not as much grip out there and some of the bumps are pretty nasty offline.
00:22:14Gee, that car was leaping around.
00:22:15So Courtney's just proving to be very difficult at the moment for Coultharders.
00:22:19Now John O'Webb comes down the inside of James Moffat.
00:22:21Big lock up Russell Engle and runs wide.
00:22:25Gathers it up.
00:22:27Rick Kelly right behind him now.
00:22:29We saw them change positions before when Rick went off at turn 11.
00:22:33And he would have seen that lock up for Engle.
00:22:35He's saying a little step back.
00:22:38Put some pressure back on Russell and see if he can get that position.
00:22:42It's been a quiet weekend for Jonathan Webb.
00:22:45The Darrell Lee entry.
00:22:46Got off to a great start in Adelaide.
00:22:49Hasn't been able to get the car to his liking here this weekend.
00:22:51Fastest lap of the race, Mark Winterbottom.
00:22:53At one minute, 4.07.
00:22:55Yeah, 10th and 11th in the first two races for John O'Webb.
00:22:59Which is a good result.
00:23:00But the qualifying efforts have been hard work.
00:23:04So he's had to find his way through the field to get those positions in the race.
00:23:10And right now he's moved up to 14th.
00:23:13And it looks a little bit like James Courtney's holding that pack up now.
00:23:17Because they've all come up in behind.
00:23:19You can see Courtney battling to stop there.
00:23:21Fabian Coulthard's been putting pressure on now lap after lap.
00:23:25Davison's moved right up behind Coulthard.
00:23:27Van Giesburg had moved up.
00:23:29Kramer, McLaughlin.
00:23:30Also the two Fujitsu cars in behind.
00:23:33So this has become a little freight train.
00:23:35Even Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander have moved onto the back of that.
00:23:39So this is all coming from Courtney's speed.
00:23:43And he's complaining of high speed oversteer in the car.
00:23:46So it's sliding too much in the rear in these quick corners.
00:23:49This is the last corner.
00:23:51You can see that Fabian gets a little bit closer.
00:23:53We'll stay with him here.
00:23:54We'll get an indication of the car behaviour.
00:23:55This is Courtney.
00:24:27And one of those Fujitsu cars was locked up in the background there.
00:24:32And has fired straight off the road.
00:24:37Kramer.
00:24:37So while we were riding with James Court, we saw a glimpse of the red car firing straight through the turn five runoff area.
00:24:49Oh, Lowndes, a big slide there.
00:24:57Trying to get a run on Kramer.
00:24:58This will be interesting down here because Premo probably should let Lowndes by based by going off the road.
00:25:04And that was a very big moment for Craig Lowndes as he got it turned and tucked in under the wing.
00:25:11Tandor also putting pressure on Craig.
00:25:13Tandor also putting pressure on Craig.
00:25:14It's going to be a pretty healthy battle down here.
00:25:17Van Gisbergen, he's making a move here.
00:25:20So Courtney's found himself with his ears boxed back at turn four.
00:25:24Coulthard's gone by, so is the FPR car and now Van Gis is up the inside.
00:25:28James is going to argue the point at five and try and hold his line here for six, and he has.
00:25:36Well done, but the crisscross.
00:25:38So he did that.
00:25:39He fired down the inside at turn six, and he's right off Van Gisbergen and out of road.
00:25:44He'd definitely come over there on the braking approach.
00:25:48This will be a safety car if he can't move it.
00:25:53Jesus.
00:25:53He's gone in a cloud of dust.
00:25:58James Courtney fought his way through five and six, and then seven and eight decided to just drift across and squeeze Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:26:13As a result, Courtney's stay is in the dust.
00:26:17This will be the second safety car intervention now.
00:26:19Here's the situation back at turn four.
00:26:24This is what triggered it all.
00:26:25Fabian got up the inside with a little bump there at four.
00:26:28That put James out of rhythm.
00:26:29Will Davison goes by, so now James' exit speed is slow, makes him slow down the straight.
00:26:34So Shane Van Gisbergen gets a run at him.
00:26:37But James now, as he gathers pace again, was able to hang on here at turn five.
00:26:42Goes the long way around, gives him the ideal apex for six.
00:26:46You'll see glimpses of Shane.
00:26:48So they're side by side.
00:26:59That's what it looks, sounds, and feels like.
00:27:02So he ended up across the nose.
00:27:04Here it is from outside.
00:27:05Tells the story.
00:27:06As James moved left, there's nowhere for Van Gisbergen to go, so it pivots around the nose of the VIP Pet Foods entry and in the kitty litter.
00:27:14And this is what happened to Alex Primmett.
00:27:17That was a very big brake lockup.
00:27:18He almost KO'd his teammate.
00:27:20That was close to a very big pile of jitsu components on the road there.
00:27:24Not wrong.
00:27:25Scott McLaughlin did a very, very good job not to get hit.
00:27:29Back with more in a second.
00:27:30Stay with us.
00:27:30Looking down over this circuit here as we get ready for a restart with car 22 out of the stones down at turn eight, Barrettes.
00:27:44Bruce, you need a secretary down here.
00:27:46You've got a lot going on.
00:27:47What's your take on what you just saw with James Courtney and Shane?
00:27:50I just don't think James gave him enough racing room as he came back onto the circuit.
00:27:54And unfortunately, that was the end result.
00:27:55One of them went.
00:27:57It's a great shame.
00:27:58We're having a great race and we'll keep going from there.
00:28:00Thanks, Bruce.
00:28:04Might try and just grab a quick word.
00:28:06Sorry to interrupt you there, Tony.
00:28:07You're very busy.
00:28:07We're just keen to get a view on...
00:28:09We've got the other side's view of that incident.
00:28:11You got a view?
00:28:12No, we're working on it.
00:28:13Okay.
00:28:14Sorry.
00:28:15Okay.
00:28:15Well, there's a view.
00:28:16Thanks, Tony.
00:28:18Thanks for that, Tony.
00:28:19Let's head down and ready to go again, isn't it?
00:28:21So, again, Winterbottom leads them through for this restart.
00:28:29Now, Gisbergen's still out there.
00:28:31He's in fifth.
00:28:33James Courtney's at the back of the queue.
00:28:35A little bit better job from Winkup that time.
00:28:38Winterbottom got a very good jump out of the hairpin on the previous restart.
00:28:42Jamie Winkup went with him.
00:28:45Fabian Korthar, good restart also.
00:28:47So, I think quite a big gap there between Davison and Van Gisbergen.
00:29:02Well, this time they all snake through in single file and no aggro.
00:29:07Incidentally, Courtney has continued.
00:29:09It's just a couple of laps down on the leaders.
00:29:11So, they've dragged him out, cleaned him up, and off he's gone.
00:29:21Straight ahead goes Russell Ingle at turn five.
00:29:25Russell was 15th at that point.
00:29:26That's right.
00:29:26He was with Rick Kelly.
00:29:28So, they have to come out there.
00:29:28It's on again.
00:29:29It's on again.
00:29:29And this time, Winkup squeezes through.
00:29:32Debris on the track.
00:29:33And Fabian Korthar is going to round them all up.
00:29:38Wow.
00:29:38While you box and punch and dice, Korthar goes around and says,
00:29:42I'll take the lead.
00:29:44And the crowd will love it.
00:29:46How was the New Zealand reaction?
00:29:49It's not over yet between Winkup and Winterbottom.
00:29:55Look how close they are.
00:29:56And Frosty will be fuming.
00:29:58Winterbottom will be fuming here.
00:30:00So, he'll be doing everything he can to respond.
00:30:03Van Gisbergen looked up the inside of Will Davison then as well at four.
00:30:08This is a copy of yesterday.
00:30:10This is about the proximity of the two.
00:30:13With a big dive yesterday from Winterbottom on Winkup.
00:30:15That was a lunge, a massive lunge from Winkup that time.
00:30:19Into the hairpin, down the inside.
00:30:21McLaughlin on Van Gisbergen.
00:30:23These guys, this is not over.
00:30:25He'll want to return serve this time.
00:30:27Frosty will want to be close enough to get down the inside here.
00:30:31He's not close enough.
00:30:33Winkup turns it in slightly early.
00:30:35Tander on Premahoo.
00:30:37I imagine he's got a massive flat spot on a tyre.
00:30:40And Jason Bright's getting some hurry up from Dave Reynolds there as well
00:30:43on the exit of eight.
00:30:44Look at the gap.
00:30:46Well done, Fabian.
00:30:47He's got away very nicely.
00:30:48Alex Davison, Jason Bright side to side.
00:30:51Reynolds up the inside.
00:30:52Jonathan Webb tucked in behind in the queue.
00:30:55This has got all the potential to be messy.
00:30:58Well, somehow they all found their own piece of the road.
00:31:01But we know that two into one doesn't go particularly well down at one.
00:31:05And Alex Davison's lost a bunch of spots in the course of the last four turns.
00:31:10You see Alex having to tippy-toe on the dirty line down there.
00:31:13Look at the margin that Coulthard's got over Winkup.
00:31:16And Winkup will have missile lock on the back of that Red Bull Commodore at the moment.
00:31:20He will be absolutely focused on trying to get that spot back.
00:31:24There's a set at the start of the race.
00:31:25He'll be cranky.
00:31:27He had a bad day yesterday at the office when he tried to pull the move for the race lead.
00:31:31It didn't work out.
00:31:32He got into an intra-team brawl this morning in qualifying.
00:31:37Now he's also got his teammate breathing on him here at the hairpin.
00:31:41Here he is again in replay.
00:31:42This is what happened.
00:31:44An opportunistic move by Jamie Winkup.
00:31:46But it slowed him up so much that it was a free gift for Fabian Coulthard.
00:31:55That was barely a gap because it started with a push.
00:31:58So again, this is going to be a very tricky one for them to deal with upstairs.
00:32:05Van Gisbergen gets around Will Davison.
00:32:08So that puts a Kiwi first and a Kiwi third.
00:32:12Big oversteer moment for Will Davison through two there.
00:32:15Lowndes is right in the middle of all that scrap as well.
00:32:28So Frosty's having a struggle here, isn't he?
00:32:30Steering dramas.
00:32:31He's reporting steering drama.
00:32:33He's drifting back and they're all going to pick him up one by one.
00:32:35Oh, this is not good.
00:32:36Look at this.
00:32:38He's on Scott McCaffrey.
00:32:39I can't turn.
00:32:40Okay, mate.
00:32:40Okay.
00:32:41Come in.
00:32:42Pits as well.
00:32:42Off the road at six.
00:32:45Tander up the inside of Premar.
00:32:47Alex Premar's holding on with a very badly damaged front tyre.
00:32:51Winterbottock's gone.
00:32:52He is gone.
00:32:54He's on the left-hand side of your screen.
00:32:55He'll keep going into pit lane.
00:32:59They're big repercussions.
00:33:01That was a pretty controversial move.
00:33:03He and Winkup battling for the lead.
00:33:05The contact between those two cars will have created the steering issue.
00:33:12And he's complaining now of those steering dramas.
00:33:17And you see him go backwards.
00:33:18Losing two spots now into turn one.
00:33:21This is a replay of this big moment that Will Davison has.
00:33:27Frosty outside ways also.
00:33:30And Will's got that spot back on Shane Van Gisberg.
00:33:33And Brits goes Frosty just back into the pits at the moment.
00:33:36He has a problem with the front steering.
00:33:38They can't work out exactly what it is.
00:33:40But it is from that knocking around with Jamie Winkup.
00:33:43So not very happy at FPR at the moment.
00:33:48I'm sure there's some drama down there because, you know, he was leading.
00:33:52We saw the issues yesterday with that bold move that Frosty put on.
00:33:59You can see the steering wheel.
00:34:02The steering wheel is substantially off centre then.
00:34:04So there will be a bent steering arm there.
00:34:06And that's very disconcerting for the driver.
00:34:11You can see Frosty just giving it a wiggle there to try and test its reactions and behaviour.
00:34:18So he's already gone a lap down.
00:34:20And you heard them say, Chris O'Toole, the crew chief, send it, get a feel for it, bring it in next lap if we have to.
00:34:28But I caught a glimpse as he exited the pit box and the steering wheel was massively off centre.
00:34:33But it just builds the moment, doesn't it?
00:34:35The aggro that we saw last year with Triple Eight and FPR.
00:34:38We saw the aggro yesterday at the end of the race.
00:34:41We've seen aggro at the start of this race.
00:34:43And there was a bump and a shove and a push.
00:34:45Now steering issues have basically put Mark Winnebottom out of this one.
00:34:51Here's Chris O'Toole.
00:34:54And then run out of steering.
00:34:56James Small, the engineer.
00:34:57So that, Toole then saying, bring him in, would be my read.
00:35:01On that, here comes Jason Bright now.
00:35:03He's on the attack with Alex Premere.
00:35:05Going to have to do it the long way around.
00:35:07And out there, high and wide, is awkward.
00:35:09It's dirty, it's bumpy.
00:35:10David Reynolds set to pounce.
00:35:12This is a battle for seventh at the moment.
00:35:15Brian Reynolds have been training blows lap after lap.
00:35:19And now Alex Premere is in the picture.
00:35:22Don't worry, Jonathan Webb's in this one too.
00:35:26And you've got to pick your mark.
00:35:28Do you notice that Jason Bright decided to get out of the throttle
00:35:32and pull back in behind Premere?
00:35:34Premere was already shifting him wide.
00:35:36He didn't have enough racing room.
00:35:39And we know that Alex is pretty wild.
00:35:41And Jason Bright just decided just to move back in behind.
00:35:43That's probably a pretty smart move based on the Jason Richards.
00:35:47Alex Davison on the inside of Jonathan Webb.
00:35:49The run to five.
00:35:50He's well up there.
00:35:52But if you hold your ground, you can hold that apex at six.
00:35:55And that is precisely what Webb has just done.
00:36:00That was good racing.
00:36:01Off the road, Jamie Winkup.
00:36:03Winkup is off and buried.
00:36:04Championship leader in the dirt.
00:36:16He was second when that happened.
00:36:18Safety car boards and flags.
00:36:19Safety car boards and flags.
00:36:20Safety car just hold.
00:36:21Safety car hold.
00:36:22We have another car off turn eight and the gravel safety place just hold.
00:36:28So exactly the same place as Jamie Winkup, as James Courtney.
00:36:33Winkup goes in here at turn eight.
00:36:35By himself.
00:36:36Done it all himself.
00:36:37Onto the grass.
00:36:38There'll be a reason for it.
00:36:40On the left-hand side, there's nothing he can do.
00:36:42Let's have a listen.
00:36:43It's like it just over-rode.
00:36:51It didn't retard hardly at all at the start.
00:36:54Maybe it had some throttle still on it.
00:36:57That was very strange.
00:37:02Well, sorry, I just don't want to interrupt when he's taught you.
00:37:05Sorry, Dado, to interrupt.
00:37:07Mark Dutton, Jamie's engineer, mate.
00:37:08We couldn't get a read on what went wrong there.
00:37:10What mechanical drama?
00:37:11No, just foot slipped off the pedal.
00:37:12As simple as that.
00:37:13Oh, really?
00:37:14Yeah, obviously, there's no room for that.
00:37:16And, yeah.
00:37:17Oh, that happens.
00:37:18Thanks, mate, for heads up.
00:37:19While we're here, I just want to quickly grab a quick chat with Roland Dane,
00:37:22team principal down here at Red Bull Racing.
00:37:24Mate, as the unofficial Holden team here this weekend,
00:37:28that was disappointing,
00:37:29but I wanted to talk to you about the incident early in the race
00:37:31because cars one and five under investigation.
00:37:34You'll read on that?
00:37:35Yeah, I think we're here as the official team, actually.
00:37:38But anyway, I thought it was Jamie taking the race,
00:37:42to Winderbottom.
00:37:43He braked early into the hairpin by the look of it externally,
00:37:47and Jamie decided to give him a lunge.
00:37:49Winderbottom proved he's pretty good at lunging at Sandown last year
00:37:53and yesterday here,
00:37:54so what goes around comes around.
00:37:56There's no question, Roland.
00:37:57This format is certainly bringing this out of the drivers.
00:37:59We've seen a little bit of agitation this weekend.
00:38:00I think it's actually a good thing.
00:38:02Short races, short, sharp races, to be honest,
00:38:05with plenty of action.
00:38:06We're certainly laying it on for the Kiwis this weekend.
00:38:09And we just heard your man, his foot slipped off the pedal.
00:38:11We've all been and all done it.
00:38:12Can happen.
00:38:13Very, very unlucky.
00:38:14Yeah, apparently.
00:38:15I only heard the same as you,
00:38:17but if so, yeah, we need a little bit of engineering on his foot.
00:38:22All right, thanks for the heads up, buddy.
00:38:23Well, Tim Edwards, Mark Winderbottom,
00:38:25has just come into the garage here.
00:38:26We've just heard from Roland Dane that he thought it was all...
00:38:29Roland thought that was all in racing
00:38:31and what was happening out on the track,
00:38:33and the pair have been dishing it up to each other all year.
00:38:35Your response to that?
00:38:37What a load of rubbish.
00:38:38I mean, that was just bump and run.
00:38:39We don't tolerate that in this sport.
00:38:41He knows that.
00:38:41So it's great when, you know, he's on the receiving end
00:38:44that he has a different view.
00:38:45But anyway, that's race.
00:38:47And I think we just saw karma out there, didn't we?
00:38:49Thanks, Tim.
00:38:52This is the incident that they're referring to.
00:38:55This was wing cut down the inside of Winderbottom.
00:38:57We saw the agro yesterday.
00:39:00And then the vision that we've seen is the series leader,
00:39:04not the series leader now,
00:39:05but the man who has been dominant in this sport,
00:39:08the simplest mistake, foot coming off the pedal.
00:39:11You've done it.
00:39:11I did it here when we were here in 2002.
00:39:15There was no turn 5, 6, 7 then,
00:39:16so you arrived at the end of the back straight at 270km.
00:39:19The size 10 got it wrong and fell between the pedals.
00:39:22Had eyes like dish plates by the time I got down the dirt there.
00:39:26It's not a good look.
00:39:27I think you did it too.
00:39:28I've done it too.
00:39:28I'm qualifying at Eastern Creek,
00:39:30and I think that luck has done it too.
00:39:32It just happens, doesn't it?
00:39:33Yeah.
00:39:34A lot of brake pressure required down there,
00:39:36so there's some damage on this car.
00:39:38They'll need to have a look at it.
00:39:39It will have ingested a lot of garbage into the front of it.
00:39:41It would make huge engine and brake temps if they don't.
00:39:44So a rare mistake by Jamie Wincup.
00:39:48And I'd be interested to get a view from officials later in the day
00:39:52as to what they thought of what happened there at 2.8.
00:39:54I'm going to do the radiator for me, Jiggy.
00:39:55And I'll get you to do the right front wheel there.
00:39:58So they're going to have a good look on that.
00:39:59Do you want to get this rat duct out of it?
00:40:00Scafie, you mentioned that Jamie Wincup is now no longer the series lead.
00:40:04That has gone to Will Davison.
00:40:08Currently in second.
00:40:09So Fabian Coulthard leads the race.
00:40:13Then Will, then Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:40:18As Frosty heads back out.
00:40:21Down.
00:40:22Good to go.
00:40:23It's handy that they go back out together.
00:40:25We'll be keeping an eye on the front of the field and the back of the field.
00:40:30How was your day, mate?
00:40:31Oh, not bad.
00:40:33Good to see you again.
00:40:34I don't think it'll be something of that effect anyway.
00:40:36So Will Davison, not only leading the championship right now, he's leading the Jason Richards Memorial.
00:40:47Yeah, combined points score over the course of the four races.
00:40:51Will had a seventh and a second yesterday and he's on track for another podium here.
00:40:55So off they go.
00:40:58This will be a time-certain race.
00:41:01It might go the distance.
00:41:02There are ten laps left.
00:41:05Basically another seven minutes of racing plus.
00:41:08Six and a half minutes of racing.
00:41:10There you go.
00:41:10And one lap.
00:41:10Let's see what this restart brings.
00:41:17Coulthard heads out.
00:41:21He started on pole position yesterday for our seventh race.
00:41:27And was penalised for a false start.
00:41:30Now he's got the chance to make amends.
00:41:32Davison's behind him.
00:41:34And he once has a Ford one at this circuit in the V8 Supercar era.
00:41:40And two extremely different lines through turns five and six between the Houlton and the V8 Supercar.
00:41:46And Davison and Van Gisbergen's ready to pounce.
00:41:48Wow, did you see Will's case?
00:41:49He's had a dive.
00:41:50Will up the inside at eight.
00:41:52And Will was cranked sideways on the run in there.
00:41:54And he's got away with it now.
00:41:55Van Gisbergen's into it as well.
00:41:57Kiwis side by side.
00:42:00And Shane Van Gisbergen grabs P2.
00:42:04Lowndes is looking.
00:42:05Racing two at the rear of car 14.
00:42:07But here comes Will.
00:42:10Very good move, Will Davison.
00:42:12That was a very good pass.
00:42:13Thief in the ninth stuff.
00:42:15Ford fans are loving that.
00:42:17He might have caught Fabian napping for a split second.
00:42:19That's all it takes around here.
00:42:22With five minutes to go, race time.
00:42:26Yeah, we finish at five minutes at the hour plus a lap.
00:42:28And off the road and out of control there for a moment.
00:42:30Scott McLaughlin gathered it up.
00:42:33He was off the road going very fast.
00:42:38Now on board with Will Davison.
00:42:40That's Shane Van Gisbergen in behind.
00:42:42Fabian called that right up in behind his fellow Kiwi.
00:42:46And a pretty lively bunch in behind there with Craig Lowndes, Tander, Bright, Reynolds.
00:42:51We're getting value for money this weekend, aren't we?
00:42:55We're raising some stuff going on out there.
00:42:57Look at this.
00:42:58Look at this.
00:42:58Nose to tail.
00:43:00What do you think, P1?
00:43:01Jinx.
00:43:03Whatever you do, P2.
00:43:05Check this out.
00:43:07Through turn 10.
00:43:08Van Gisbergen sliding in through turn 11.
00:43:16He was sliding that car so much.
00:43:18You wonder how he can keep on doing that and get away with it, Van Gisbergen.
00:43:21Car 97.
00:43:23It's allowed Coulthard to get very close again to the back of him.
00:43:36I just heard a groan on the radio.
00:43:37Oh, I heard a groan on the radio from this man.
00:43:40And they've asked him if he's okay.
00:43:42This is McLaughlin.
00:43:45Oh, this would be really nasty.
00:43:46That was hard.
00:43:47I don't know.
00:43:51That is a biggie.
00:43:56It's very, very fast.
00:43:58It's a 200k corner.
00:44:00We heard Richard Holloway say, are you okay, mate?
00:44:02It was just a grunt.
00:44:04Yeah, I heard he...
00:44:05Yeah.
00:44:05He opened the microphone and went, oh!
00:44:08And here he is.
00:44:09He's okay.
00:44:10But that will have winded him.
00:44:11Those six-point belts give you a big winding.
00:44:13And that's what he's indicating to us there at the moment.
00:44:16And on the exit of turn 11, huge speed, 200-odd kilometres an hour into that concrete wall.
00:44:24And it's knocked the young guy around.
00:44:26This is Scott McLaughlin.
00:44:28Winner race six yesterday.
00:44:29He's unplugged now.
00:44:30Safety car out for the third time.
00:44:32You can see where he's fired off the road.
00:44:34That would have started much earlier.
00:44:35We'll have a look at the replay here and this will tell us the story.
00:44:42He'll get a warm response from the crowd.
00:44:46This is the one that we remarked about a few moments ago.
00:44:48So remember now, dirty tyres.
00:44:51A lot of garbage in the front of the car.
00:44:52Would have scooped up some rubbish into the brake intakes.
00:44:56And then it runs out of road here.
00:44:58He's actually off the road quite early.
00:44:59Possibly punctured a tyre before he got there.
00:45:04Or maybe the tyres were dirty.
00:45:07Whatever the case, he's ended up in the wall.
00:45:09Fortunately, he's out of the car.
00:45:11And he's been a bit winded and OK.
00:45:12There's his crew led by Richard Holwaite.
00:45:14Yeah, right here with Richard.
00:45:15Richard just saw that moment for Scott.
00:45:17He is OK?
00:45:19Yeah, no.
00:45:19He sounds like he's a bit winded.
00:45:21He's hit pretty hard, I'd say.
00:45:22Mechanical problems?
00:45:23Possible puncture?
00:45:24Left front tyre failure.
00:45:26Yeah.
00:45:26Thanks, mate.
00:45:27Yeah, no worries.
00:45:27There you go.
00:45:28So the left front went on Scott going into turn 10.
00:45:33That's a big, deep breath that he needs to take before he heads back.
00:45:38What a weekend, Matt.
00:45:40Yesterday, you win the first race of your supercar career.
00:45:44And today, you crash at one of the highest speed, wildest places anywhere we go.
00:45:49Yeah, and you're still looking at that in-car vision.
00:45:51I think it was from inside Landers or Wing Cup's car.
00:45:54You see the wings on their seat.
00:45:55That's what those wings are about.
00:45:56When you have that sideways impact like that, they stop your head going sideways.
00:46:00And they're hard ones because when you have a frontal or a three-quarter impact, like we
00:46:03saw with Scotty Pye last week in Tasmania, the car can deform.
00:46:07When the whole side of a car hits a wall like that, a lot of energy goes into the driver.
00:46:11So he'll well and truly have the wind knocked out of him.
00:46:13Yeah, he's got hold of his ribs.
00:46:14He's got hold of his ribs.
00:46:15Larkar, not surprisingly, he'll head back to the medical tent and be checked out.
00:46:21So we are facing the situation here of this race being declared under safety car.
00:46:27Yes, it's time certain.
00:46:31Finishes at five minutes to the hour local time, plus a lap.
00:46:34And you don't know, they may be able to get it up on the flatbed truck and removed in time
00:46:40for us to get at least one clean lap.
00:46:43If it stays as it is, we get another forward win.
00:46:45Matt, you've been alluding to that this weekend.
00:46:47And a big one for Will Davison, who's all of a sudden looking good in the points.
00:46:50And I would say that most of the team managers would be saying,
00:46:52let it finish under the safety car.
00:46:54The amount of lunacy that we've just seen.
00:46:56Stop, stop.
00:46:57You're only going to get one lap.
00:46:59Just stop.
00:46:59Stop.
00:47:00Stop.
00:47:01We talked about this.
00:47:02We're sick of writing checks.
00:47:03Stop.
00:47:05Enough's enough, guys.
00:47:06That's the vibe, isn't it?
00:47:10We've still got one race to go.
00:47:12Remember, they've already done the qualifying session for that.
00:47:14Earlier today, Crumper, you said this has got a sniff of chaos about it.
00:47:21You did.
00:47:22You'd feel it in your water, couldn't you?
00:47:24Okay.
00:47:24You could just tell.
00:47:26It's tragic, really.
00:47:28It's been coming in the front gate too long.
00:47:31That's a real shame for Scotty McLaughlin.
00:47:34Like you say, Mark, he's ridden the highs and lows of this game in just one weekend.
00:47:40It's a big equaliser, isn't it?
00:47:41It's a hard game.
00:47:43Just goes to show what a knife edge the boys are on.
00:47:45It's a very fine line between being a hero and not in professional motor racing at this level.
00:47:51Very disappointing.
00:47:53But it's all part of a bank of information that he'll be continuing to gather to keep on building himself towards being a championship contender.
00:47:59We know he's got speed.
00:48:00He's put that first major win on the board yesterday.
00:48:03And we might have a situation here where the Pedder's STP safety car can be released and we get a flying finish.
00:48:11But all good news for Will Davison.
00:48:19Great run for the Kiwis again.
00:48:21Van Gisbergen and Coulthard flying the local flag brilliantly this weekend.
00:48:25Well, two locals on the podium to start this Sunday of racing.
00:48:31So the car's been removed from the circuit.
00:48:38Car 33.
00:48:39And I reckon they're going to have one flying lap.
00:48:50This will be the final lap.
00:49:05We have clicked past the critical five minutes to the hour.
00:49:10So we're into the five minutes to the hour plus the lap.
00:49:13And we think that the chequered flag will come out.
00:49:16So what will happen is the Pedder's STP safety car will pull off.
00:49:20They'll see a green flag.
00:49:22They'll roll to the line.
00:49:23The chequered flag will be out.
00:49:23They'll be done.
00:49:26So there won't be any lunacy.
00:49:28Well.
00:49:30Well.
00:49:30Well.
00:49:31Hang on.
00:49:33Let's just get to the end first.
00:49:35OK.
00:49:35So the safety car is now getting out of the way.
00:49:39And Will Davison, all things being equal, should just lead a rolling finish.
00:49:45And become the first Ford driver to win at this circuit in nine years.
00:49:51And only the second Blue Oval Boy to claim a victory here behind Marcus Ambrose.
00:49:57And not only that, we'll lead the championship.
00:50:06Green flags.
00:50:06Green flags.
00:50:08Uh-oh.
00:50:11So this is a run to the flag.
00:50:15Stay on the black stuff.
00:50:16And you get your first win of the season.
00:50:19And Will Davison becomes our seventh different race winner.
00:50:23There we go, boys.
00:50:24There it is.
00:50:25For 2013.
00:50:26Great work.
00:50:27And ends a long, long drought for Ford and Pukka-Koen Park Raceway.
00:50:36The Kiwis at Van Gisbergen and Kooltang.
00:50:38Win to win, brother.
00:50:38Win to win.
00:50:39Would have been nice to, uh, yeah, finish under racing, that's for sure.
00:50:42I think we could have, uh, got away.
00:50:43No problem.
00:50:44He still wanted to have a crack, Will.
00:50:47That's thumbs up for Shane Van Gisbergen next to him.
00:50:50So the Gis second, Kooltang in third, and Craig Lowndes in fourth.
00:50:55It's another winner.
00:50:57It's quite a roll call at the moment, isn't it?
00:50:59I'm right.
00:51:00Seriously, on the piece of paper that I've got, there isn't room at the bottom.
00:51:03I'm happy to start another piece of paper.
00:51:04It's fantastic.
00:51:06So there's your podium.
00:51:07Garth Tander finishing in fifth.
00:51:09Brighton David Reynolds were battling the whole way through,
00:51:12and that's how they remained at the end.
00:51:13Jason Bright will start our next race from pole position.
00:51:17Rick Kelly inside the top ten yet again for the Nissan Altima,
00:51:20and the Nissan Motorsport guys have dual, uh, back-to-back top ten finishes.
00:51:25So things are pointing in the right direction.
00:51:26A real lift for that team.
00:51:29Tim Slade for Erebus Motorsport just missing out on a top 15 position.
00:51:33The casualties, there were plenty.
00:51:37It has cost Jamie Winkup the lead of the championship.
00:51:39Mark Winterbottom and Winkup tangling.
00:51:45The feud between Triple Eight and FPR is growing by the minute.
00:51:51There's a lot of feeling there at the moment between those organizations.
00:51:54There has been.
00:51:55Remember, they were the only two teams to share success in the 2012 championship.
00:51:59We've blown that away in the new season with these new cars.
00:52:02They've had a couple of battles, one with each other, and now with a greater number of teams.
00:52:08So seven different winners, and a great job for forward Will Davison.
00:52:15Very happy.
00:52:18Look at the guys.
00:52:19I love the way the guys get into it in terms of the elation, the team performance,
00:52:24and this early part of the year has been incredible.
00:52:26Their workload to get these new cars on track.
00:52:29Everybody in pit lane has contributed so much.
00:52:32And this is a great reward for all their work.
00:52:35It's sort of a kiss, but...
00:52:42He went on the streets of Sydney last year to finish off 2012.
00:52:49And he now has a 25-point lead in the championship.
00:52:52And remember the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy for the combined points over the weekend.
00:52:57He also leads that Will Davison by 12 points.
00:53:00Equals second.
00:53:01Jason Bright and Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:53:04Well, Will Davison, just enjoying this moment.
00:53:07You can tell it's special.
00:53:08I've got some more special news for you.
00:53:09You are now the leader in the championship by 25 points and also the leader in the Jason Richards Trophy.
00:53:15Congratulations, mate.
00:53:15Great days.
00:53:16Yeah, we're just playing it smart and playing it cool this weekend, Barrett.
00:53:20So that was...
00:53:21You know, we've got a tough race ahead of me in the next one off ninth.
00:53:23But I'm pumped to get a win and very excited for the team.
00:53:27Very excited for all the Ford fans.
00:53:28You know, it's been a couple of rounds since we've got on top.
00:53:31Frosty has had such a fast car.
00:53:32So I actually feel really bad for him.
00:53:34He's been the man to catch on our team this weekend.
00:53:37But he's got another one to go on the next one.
00:53:39And, you know, let's hope we can finish on a good note.
00:53:41I'm just trying to be smart and cool about this year.
00:53:44And let a few others make some mistakes around me.
00:53:47So, you know, this is for all the Ford fans.
00:53:49This is for all our sponsors of Pepsi Max.
00:53:51Their first victory.
00:53:52And, of course, to everyone special at home.
00:53:54Good on you, Will.
00:53:55Well, congratulations.
00:53:56All right, Shane Van Gisberg.
00:53:57And welcome back to the podium here in Auckland.
00:53:59Congratulations.
00:54:00Yeah, thank you.
00:54:01It was a pretty cool race.
00:54:01A lot of action going on.
00:54:02But I had an incident with James.
00:54:04He expected me not to be there, I think, and spun himself out.
00:54:07But stoked.
00:54:08Two Kiwis on the podium.
00:54:09That's awesome.
00:54:09I hope you all enjoyed that race.
00:54:11And another one to come this summer.
00:54:12Good on you, Shane.
00:54:13Enjoyed the podium.
00:54:14Congratulations.
00:54:15And Fabian Coulthard, for you and the team, this is shaping up as a great weekend.
00:54:18Yeah, look, it's not too bad.
00:54:19You know, we're unlucky there.
00:54:20I thought I had a bit of a flat tyre through one.
00:54:22It was pretty wild.
00:54:23And, you know, obviously, Will was on top of his game and, you know, got me into the
00:54:26hairpin.
00:54:26But, look, you know, to be standing on the podium, it's not all bad.
00:54:29It's not a bad day.
00:54:30So, like Shane said, it's awesome to have two Kiwis on the podium.
00:54:34Thanks for everybody coming out.
00:54:35You know, we try and put on the best show we can.
00:54:37And it's good fun.
00:54:38Been a great show today, Fabian.
00:54:40Congratulations.
00:54:41Cheers.
00:54:42I reckon we've walked into the garage at exactly the right time here, mate.
00:54:46I see you're looking at the bottom of your boot, Jamie.
00:54:48Is that right?
00:54:49Your foot's come off the pedal.
00:54:50Yeah, it just slips off the pedal, breaking into the hairpin.
00:54:53And you know what happens when that happens.
00:54:55You get a heap of throttle as well at the same time.
00:54:57So, good Alpine star product.
00:55:00But I think I'm trying to get a few too many race meetings out of my favourite pair.
00:55:03So, I'll put a new shit on for next race.
00:55:06Yeah, and I think we've got to put it in perspective for people at home.
00:55:08You know, every time you put your foot on the pedal, it's like the equivalent of like
00:55:10a leg press of your own weight.
00:55:12And you've got to be down for the hundredth of a second.
00:55:15And quite clearly, as we saw, you were looking for those hundredths.
00:55:18Great fight out there with Frosty.
00:55:19Yeah, yeah.
00:55:20No, it's good.
00:55:21He wants to do it rough this year.
00:55:23So, that's the way we're playing it at this stage.
00:55:26So, no, good battle.
00:55:27The car was reasonably quick.
00:55:29Yeah, unfortunate that the foot slipped off the pedal a bit anyway.
00:55:31Second in the championship.
00:55:33But the great thing about these formats, mate, apart from the fact that it's crazy out there,
00:55:38and we're loving it.
00:55:38Yeah, yeah.
00:55:39I knew it would be better.
00:55:40No, but you get now to go and start on the front row again.
00:55:43And that's where this really works.
00:55:44We're seeing a bigger variety of grid positions this weekend, I think, than we've ever seen.
00:55:48Yeah, I think you're right.
00:55:49It's a good thing.
00:55:50You know, if we were starting where we finished, that weekend would be written off.
00:55:54But at least we've got another chance of getting back up there and a whole new scenario next
00:55:58race.
00:55:59So, what's this space?
00:56:00All right.
00:56:01Thanks, buddy.
00:56:01Good luck in the next one.
00:56:02Cheers.
00:56:03So, J-Dub in search of a new set of boots.
00:56:05He's getting too much use out of them.
00:56:07So, Will Davison went into that race 34 points behind his good mate.
00:56:10Now, Will leads the championship and becomes the first Ford driver of 2013 to stand on
00:56:17the top step of the podium.
00:56:19This will be a popular one too.
00:56:21Two Kiwis are up there in Shane Van Gisbergen and Fabian Coulthard.
00:56:24Barrettes?
00:56:25Race 8 of the year, the 2013 V8 Supercars ITM 400 Auckland.
00:56:30Ladies and gentlemen, would you please congratulate our winners in first place for Pepsi Max crew,
00:56:35FPR Ford, Will Davison.
00:56:38In second place for Techno team VIP, Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:56:44And in third place for Lockwood Racing, Fabian Coulthard.
00:56:50Representing our winning team, Pepsi Max crew, FPR Ford, is Richard Jacobs.
00:56:54To make the presentation of the third place trophy is Dylan Boucher, the New Zealand Breakers player,
00:57:02three-time NBL basketball champions.
00:57:10Presenting to second place is Mike Clark, the Chief Information Officer, Sky City Entertainment Group.
00:57:18Making the presentation to our winning team is Philip Wolfe, the ITM store owner from our
00:57:23major sponsor, ITM.
00:57:24And presenting the first place trophy is Morris Cowling, another ITM store owner from our
00:57:33major sponsor, ITM.
00:57:36There they are, ladies and gentlemen, the 2013 ITM 400 Auckland Race 8 winners.
00:57:44Will Davison finished fourth in the championship of 2012.
00:57:47He won eight races last year and he's on the board this year with his 15th career victory.
00:57:53The Ford flag is finally flying in 2013.
00:57:58We'll grab a break, bring you back.
00:58:00Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton will dissect all the action right after this.
00:58:04And this is how it all went down at the end of this race for Will Davison.
00:58:15He battled his way through.
00:58:16And while those in front of him and around him fell off the track and were involved in Biff
00:58:22and Barge, Will was there at the end.
00:58:24He would have loved to have had at least one lap to give it a crack.
00:58:29He said that he had enough pace to pull away.
00:58:30But in the end, it was just a formation finish, actually.
00:58:34The safety car peeled away.
00:58:35Now, the car of the future promised us a more level playing field in 2013.
00:58:39You think about it, the dominance of Ford Performance Racing and Triple Eight Racing.
00:58:43And we've already made the point that after eight races so far this season, we've now got
00:58:47seven different winners.
00:58:48It's doing the right job, Scaifey.
00:58:50Well, it has so far, Matt.
00:58:51But I don't think we ever foresaw the lunacy that was going to prevail in that sort of
00:58:55racing.
00:58:55I mean, yesterday was great quality stuff.
00:58:57The big dive of Winterbottom on Winkup.
00:59:00The first win for Scott McLaughlin.
00:59:01All the great character of New Zealand motorsport coming back to Pukakoe.
00:59:05But today, that lunacy then, the bump and run with Winkup and the drama that unfolded afterwards.
00:59:12So a very, very good start for Mark Winterbottom.
00:59:14We were on board with Winkup for a replay in the race.
00:59:17And he got around the outside of Winkup.
00:59:19But it was a really good first and secondary part of his start.
00:59:24And then the bump was already on.
00:59:25Straight away, Winkup run straight into the back under brakes at turn five.
00:59:30There was a fair bit of lunacy in the back of the field there.
00:59:32Dalberto into the side of one of the DJR cars and off the road.
00:59:36And that was the first safety car.
00:59:38Now, we always say what happens after the safety car by having the field condense.
00:59:43Tony Dalberto walking back.
00:59:45And then it was a very good restart for Winterbottom, wasn't it, nearly?
00:59:48He got away.
00:59:49It was a really good piece of this first part of the puzzle.
00:59:52Big moment for Van Gisbergen at turn five.
00:59:55And then it all started to go wrong because Alex Premmer almost took his teammate out there.
01:00:00Could not stop.
01:00:02Blaze straight through at turn five.
01:00:04Then a dive.
01:00:05This is where all the drama started.
01:00:06Coulthard down the inside of Courtney.
01:00:08Coulthard by.
01:00:10Davison by.
01:00:11And then this issue with racing room there with Van Gisbergen and Courtney.
01:00:16That was the next safety car.
01:00:18James Courtney parked up.
01:00:19And he wouldn't have been able to see him.
01:00:20No.
01:00:20James would have been heading back to the normal turn in point.
01:00:23But how about this?
01:00:23Windcup up the inside of Winterbottom.
01:00:26We caught it and thought, okay, it wasn't a bad move.
01:00:28But this is a bit damning for Jamie because he gave him a fair whack from behind before he then got down the inside.
01:00:33So I think there would have been aggravation at the end of this no matter.
01:00:38But Jamie missed the brake pedal going into turn eight and took himself off the road.
01:00:43So that's a rare mistake.
01:00:45Listen to this.
01:00:46By the time you pick your foot back up, whack it back on, you're gone.
01:00:49Well, I said it didn't sound like it was stopping.
01:00:51It wasn't stopping.
01:00:53That was his foot on the floor.
01:00:55You'll read about the drama.
01:00:56I had no understanding of what was going to unfold here today.
01:01:00And the level of ag was as high as we've ever seen.
01:01:02Great move.
01:01:03By Davison down the inside of Fabian Coulthard.
01:01:06Very spontaneous and opportunistic.
01:01:09And then a massive moment for Scott McLaughlin.
01:01:12He got through that one, but he didn't get through this one.
01:01:14Have a look.
01:01:15The crash at turn 11 and only for the second time ever, a Ford win at Pukekohe for Will Davison.
01:01:23Leads the championship and leads the Jason Richards Memorial.
01:01:28So Jamie Windcup said in that interview at the end of that race that, look,
01:01:32Ford Performance Racing, or Frosty in particular, has decided to play tough and play rough this year.
01:01:36We can expect to see more of this.
01:01:38It's not going to go away, is it?
01:01:39No, it's the feeling between the teams.
01:01:41It was here last night, in fact, as I left the circuit late.
01:01:43The feeling between them is pretty tense at the moment.
01:01:46And that's going to escalate.
01:01:47It's really up and down the paddy.
01:01:48It's amazing.
01:01:48Great racing.
01:01:49And also, it seems in that race that they're looking for an element of surprise to make those moves.
01:01:54Cleef and the night staff, they're waiting for this.
01:01:57None of this big signalling, I'm going to take you down at turn five.
01:02:00They're just waiting for the last second.
01:02:01They're not giving an inch.
01:02:02Well, I reckon that come from Simmons Plains.
01:02:03You know, when Coulthard got caught at the hairpin, bang, that was over.
01:02:07And he didn't expect it.
01:02:09That's then turned it on now.
01:02:10And the way that's rolled into this weekend, they're all having a dive at the hairpin.
01:02:14And the other thing is they know there are no second chances.
01:02:16You get a very rare, tiny little gap.
01:02:18You've got to take it.
01:02:19If you don't, you just sit in a queue forever.
01:02:21So what's happening at the moment, the way the rules are, the way they're adjusting their cars,
01:02:24and the way you've got to attack it from a driver's standpoint is you've really got to go to the fight with a big gun.
01:02:29You've got to pull it and use it.
01:02:30So we've got one more race in the V8 supercars to come, the NZ V8s and the Utes also.
01:02:34And after this break, Scotty Pye will be our special guest reporter.
01:02:38Stay with us.
01:02:38Now biz on the run, we've already won, now march with the bad rings around here, we've only just begun, only just begun, only just begun, only just begun.
01:02:58We've got to take it.
01:02:58We've got to take it.
01:02:59We've got to take it.
01:03:00We've got to take it.
01:03:01We've got to take it.
01:03:02We've got to take it.
01:03:03We've got to take it.
01:03:04We've got to take it.
01:03:05We've got to take it.
01:03:06We've got to take it.
01:03:07We've got to take it.
01:03:08We've got to take it.
