00:00A special moment for team boss Dick Johnson and Paul Radisic, who took victory in race
00:10one.
00:10It's his third victory of the season for the Dick Johnson Racing Team, and we'll give you
00:14an idea of some of the shakers and movers from that first race today as we get set for
00:18race two.
00:21There they are.
00:21Stephen Richards has moved from 23rd position up to 12th.
00:24That's a great performance in race one.
00:26Russell Inglewell, that contact with Garth Tander, which we'll talk about shortly.
00:30Forced him from sixth at the start to 32nd.
00:33He retired, and Thomas Mazira, a good move from the back of the grid up to 22nd.
00:36Let's go to Mark Osler.
00:38Paul Radisic, they say a change is as good as a holiday.
00:41It sends a new car, it's as good as a race win.
00:43That looked pretty easy.
00:44Well, you went sitting behind the wheel, but hey, everything went well.
00:48Craig made a small error coming out of turn three, and I was able to get up the inside,
00:52and from there it's just a matter of maintaining station.
00:55But, you know, still early days with this car.
00:57I'm still not quite happy with the balance, and we'll try some things for that reverse
01:02grid race for the next of shades of caulder all over again.
01:05Well, there you go.
01:07And we'll see when I'll just keep sneaking up on it all day.
01:10Best of luck, mate.
01:10Thanks, Mark.
01:11Appreciate it.
01:12And this is the latest in the classic series of prints from the good people at Graphics
01:16Signs.
01:16It's Larry Perkins two-wheeling it, and it's a great shot.
01:18It could be yours.
01:19Simply call the number there on the bottom of your screen.
01:22$205.70.
01:24And GST is, of course, included in that one.
01:26Well, race two.
01:27Tony Longhurst will start from pole in this one.
01:29They reverse the top six.
01:30Garth Tander should be starting from pole position, but there has been a meeting between officials
01:34over that altercation with Russell Ingle.
01:36He's kept his points from race one, but he's been sent to the rear of the grid.
01:41Yeah, it's pretty rough justice out there.
01:44And Garth Tander's paid a heavy price today.
01:46Jason Barguana starts at a ninth.
01:48Stephen Johnson, tenth.
01:50Stephen Richards, great performance.
01:51That's a jump up to 11.
01:53All the way down to Paul Morris in sixteenth.
01:55We go further back through the field.
01:57Faulkner and Murphy, row nine.
01:58McConville and Bates, ten.
01:59Mazira, McDougal, eleven.
02:01And Brad Jones and Trevor Ashby, row twelve.
02:03Steve Reid and Paul Romano at a 25 and 26.
02:07Rod Nash in there, too.
02:08Derek Van Zell.
02:09Russell Ingle as a result of that altercation with Garth Tander starts right back there with
02:13the Valvoline Cummins driver.
02:15Rodney Forbes just splitting the two.
02:17It's quite incredible, this place for weather.
02:19It was sunny at the end of that last one.
02:22It started drizzling with rain.
02:23It was really cloudy.
02:24It looked like it was going to be a downpour.
02:26And now it's brilliant sunshine again.
02:27Four seasons in one day, they say.
02:29And we've had plenty of weather variety here over the last two days.
02:34Sunday's no different.
02:36A couple of non-starters in this one for you, too.
02:38Anthony Tratt in the Toll Express Falcon is out.
02:40They've had dramas with the front strut on that car after contact in race one.
02:44Damien White also is out.
02:47They've got oil pressure problems in the One World Sport Falcon.
02:50An all-Falcon front row.
02:51The first time since 1992.
02:54But Tony Longhurst has been on pole position.
02:56Gee, it's been a long time between drinks.
02:58Can you convert this into a much-needed race win for Stone Brothers?
03:01Yeah, we've got a really interesting championship situation here.
03:04Scaife was only able to increase his lead over Tander by six points as a result of Heat 1.
03:09But now Tander's starting right off the back.
03:11He's got a lot of work to do if he's going to keep this championship battle alive.
03:14By rights, Ellery should have the best chance because he should be the grippiest pilot.
03:19Oh, don't creep.
03:20Well, who'll get the bunch, or the jump, I should say, here?
03:22The former team-mates.
03:24Away they go, Ellery.
03:25Oh, boy, oh, boy.
03:26He bogs it down a little bit.
03:27Look at the launching.
03:28Oh, somebody.
03:28We've got someone in store.
03:29That's Russell.
03:30That's Larry Perkins, yeah?
03:31It's Larry.
03:32And Stephen Richards has made contact with Larry there.
03:37Ripped the wheel off.
03:38No, it's ripped the wheel off.
03:40The car on the right.
03:41I can't quite see what it is.
03:42I think it's one of the Kmart cars, Baz.
03:43Hell of an impact there.
03:45They shuffled up toward the turnway.
03:47Look at Paul.
03:48Oh, no.
03:49That's Stephen Johnson.
03:52It's all happening in that opening turn.
03:53Stephen Johnson, a lot of damage here.
03:55Oh, look at that.
03:56Stephen Richards, goodness me.
03:58Bottom of the car, scraping along the bitumen.
04:00He's going to try and limp it back to pit lane as Larry Perkins caught up in that stark incident.
04:06There in mind, that's a brand-new car too, Mark.
04:09Safety car is on the track.
04:10We've got a little bit of wreckage around here.
04:12Yellow flags are waving.
04:13They'll slow the field down.
04:15Bring the safety car out of the track until they can sort out this mess and get back to racing.
04:19Oh, what a shame.
04:20Larry debuted that car at Calder Park, I think it was.
04:25Some dramas there, though, for Stephen Richards as well.
04:28He's won two rounds this season.
04:31Stephen was on a definite charge in race one.
04:33After a shocking qualifying performance, he really worked his way through the field.
04:38Garth Tander, there he is, car 34.
04:40As a result of that collision with Russell Ingle, they've moved him to the back of the field.
04:46He's going to keep this Shell Championship Series line alive.
04:49He's going to drive the race of his life here once they tidy up this mess.
04:54Stephen Richards may be able to lift all the way back to the pits under his own power.
04:58Larry Perkins' car, I think, is stranded out there on the pit straight.
05:02And look at the fire there.
05:04Look at the fire under that car now.
05:06I think the Marshals are telling him to stop it.
05:08Because he's going to have a real barbecue under there in a minute if they don't get some fire extinguishers under that problem.
05:15I think he's probably trying to get it back so they can get it running for race three.
05:20Yeah, Marshall's on the scene putting out that fire.
05:22Fast response from the Sandown team.
05:26Stephen Richards gets out.
05:28Great disappointment for the Kmart driver.
05:31Has been on somewhat of a roll recently.
05:33He was on a hat-trick of podium performances coming into this round, but it's not going to be that way today.
05:38Look at the damage here.
05:40Larry Perkins, just the rear wheel missing from the Castrol Commodore.
05:43So that whole rear end has collapsed.
05:46We're endeavouring to find out for you what has happened there.
05:48We hear Larry may have stalled in the Castrol Commodore.
05:52We'll try and get some sort of confirmation on that for you.
05:54And perhaps that was the catalyst that set that chain reaction off.
06:00Left a big line of oil right down the main street.
06:03Let's have a look at this.
06:03They've got a Michelle Helix replay, yeah?
06:05Oh, there you go.
06:06But that impact was so hard.
06:09And you see Larry's wheel.
06:10There it is there.
06:11Look at the way the rear of the Castrol Commodore has collapsed.
06:14Right down on the ground.
06:15You see, he's pulled the hub and everything out of that car.
06:18Well, while the officials are doing a good job here at the circuit, cleaning things up, we'll take a break and come back.
06:23On the other side of this.
06:34We're back at Sandown International Raceway.
06:37And safety car pulls off.
06:38We are underway and racing in race two.
06:41Round 12 for the Shell Championship Series.
06:43Steven Ellery resumes control in the front of the field.
06:47Yeah, I'll be told at the moment there's a light sprinkling of rain happening on part of the circuit.
06:52But it looks too dry for me at this point.
06:55So Ellery in the super cheap autos Falcon leads the way.
06:57Well, Longhurst gets a little bit wide coming out of Shell MasterCard turn.
07:01Craig Lowndes tries to capitalise down the outside of the Haveline Falcon through the S's toward Easternat's turn.
07:08Lowndes really attacking the kerbs as he defends hard from Shell Hillex driver.
07:12Paul Radisic, the winner of Heat 1, as they thunder up the back straight once again.
07:16The super cheap autos Falcon.
07:18Repeat of race one with Mark Scaife right behind him.
07:21That was a fair old start from Scaife, wasn't it?
07:23Fantastic start by Scaife off the line when he stuck up the inside of Longhurst.
07:28Let's have a look at this crash again.
07:29Oh, Steven Richards.
07:30He's just basically the same sort of thing as Horan Park.
07:35Steven Richards wouldn't have got to see him until it was too late to do anything about it.
07:39As you said, Mark, to the way that back end collapsed quite violently on the back of Larry's car.
07:45So it sustained a fair bit of damage.
07:46There's Rick Bates in the colour scan Ford.
07:48Another Ford up in front, and it is Steven Ellery doing a marvellous job in the super cheap autos Falcon.
07:54Out in front and leading the way from our championship leader, Mark Scaife.
07:59Tony Longhurst under siege from Craig Lowndes.
08:02Now, we saw a few shots from our ten cameras before.
08:05Oh, we've had an incident there between Rodney Forbes and Steven Johnson.
08:10We saw some light sprinkling on our ten cameras around the track here.
08:15And we are being told that some of the teams are pulling the wet weather tyres out just as a precaution.
08:21Well, this is an outstanding performance by Steven Ellery, you've got to say.
08:24Super cheap autos team.
08:26He's not only suffering from glandular fever.
08:30I was talking to him after race one, and he said it's very, very difficult.
08:33He's trying to maintain his energy levels, but it's such an energy-sapping infection.
08:38That's the worst thing, Mark, because it goes, and it comes back, and it goes, and it comes back.
08:43That's why you have to look after yourself when you first get it, because otherwise you never get rid of it.
08:48Yeah, and he's certainly trying to deny the fact that he had it, but he's been diagnosed with the problem.
08:52He's hoping to try and sort it out before Bathurst.
08:55It's going to be hard work around Mount Panorama.
08:57But he's working for his money here.
08:59Young Paul Wheel doing a good job here too, Mark.
09:01He's moved up into ninth position, debuting a brand-new car here this weekend.
09:05The KMJ Radiators Ford, just ahead of Paul Morris.
09:09And that's Greg Murphy, someone else who's making a move too, just keeping an eye on the times for you.
09:13Paul Radisic has managed to get around Craig Lowndes.
09:17So Radisic is in fourth position behind Longhurst.
09:19Now you can see this is a good battle between these guys.
09:21The Rat looking for an inside run on Longhurst, and he's got it.
09:24He has got it.
09:25Yeah, he has been charging, hasn't he?
09:27That car has got so much speed today.
09:28Look at Lowndes trying to get up behind.
09:29Oh, it just leans on the back of the Caltex Falcon.
09:34Over the kerbs.
09:35Paul Radisic wants to get out of this fight.
09:37Look at him on the inside.
09:39Oh, yeah.
09:40What a bow.
09:40That's from Boo.
09:42It'll be Boo Dini on that one.
09:43Wasn't a huge amount of room inside there.
09:45Lowndes bounced the wheel up off the kerbs.
09:47Markham's made good ground on that one as well.
09:49He's now right in behind.
09:50You can see there, in behind Lowndes.
09:51He opts for a different line as they work down the back straight along Repco Hill.
09:55John Bauer coming for the run as well.
09:57250 kilometres an hour across the top.
10:00Breathtaking stuff as they break.
10:02Tumble down the hill toward Dandenong Road.
10:04XR Falcon corner.
10:06So Craig Lowndes really got squeezed coming out of the back straight there.
10:08Cost him a lot of time.
10:10And everyone else was able to pounce.
10:11So Craig Lowndes under fire here.
10:13Paul Radisic has taken off.
10:15A little full train behind Lowndes.
10:17Jump aboard with Mark Larkham.
10:219-10.
10:21In-car camera shows you the way out the back.
10:23There is John Bauer in 7th position.
10:25Ahead of Larkham.
10:26Craig Lowndes.
10:27I don't know what's happened to Tony Longhurst.
10:29He's dropped right back in that pack after being up in the front bunch only a moment ago.
10:34So he's back to 9th position now.
10:36And the Caltex Heveline Ford really changing here.
10:39There goes Radisic.
10:40Lowndes.
10:41Mark Larkham on the attack.
10:42John Bauer.
10:43Good progress too in the Caterpillar Falcon.
10:46Former Super Touring Aces.
10:48Greg Murphy and Paul Morris going out of Hammer and Tom there.
10:52Craig Baird.
10:54Longhurst dropped from 3rd to 9th in the place of one lap.
10:57So Caltex Heveline car.
10:59For a great start.
11:00Look at this on the replay.
11:01This is Radisic passing manoeuvre.
11:05Hard under brakes.
11:06Shell master car turn.
11:08Beautiful move by the Kiwi.
11:11Now look at this.
11:11Look at how much slowns gets.
11:12That's so louns.
11:13It was hot there.
11:14That was.
11:14Look at this.
11:15He's squeezed for room.
11:16And he goes right up over the curve.
11:19That was good move.
11:20Yeah.
11:21You've got to work.
11:22You've got to work hard to get past Mark.
11:23Markham was able to take advantage.
11:25Look at Greg Murphy getting squeezed by Paul Morris.
11:27They're all attacking here.
11:29Very, very difficult to pass.
11:30Look at the supercar racing.
11:32In the background there too, Mark.
11:33Lights ablaze.
11:34I think you'll find that might be Garth Tander after 14th position.
11:37Oh, dear me.
11:38I seem to find me a bit inside.
11:40Might be a visit to the old officials there, I would say.
11:45Yeah, captured that one on video.
11:47Surfing.
11:48Same place as happened to Ingle, isn't it?
11:51Leaning on the rear bumper of the big cab machine.
11:53Paul Morris ends up off the racing line right to the back of the field.
11:57But look at this tremendous battle.
11:59This is incredible stuff.
12:01Stephen Ellery, 26-year-old Victorian, now resides on the Gold Coast, giving it everything in the Supercheap Autos Falcon.
12:08And he's under extreme pressure from our championship leader, Mark Scaife.
12:12Scaife is aware that Tander is off the back of the field, trying to work his way through at the moment.
12:17And he's up to 11th place, can you believe it?
12:19Garth Tander, after starting off the rear of the grid, is almost knocking inside the top ten.
12:24Good idea, yeah.
12:25Paul Radisic is definitely closing on these guys.
12:28You can see him in the background there.
12:30The Kiwi should welcome our viewers also watching through TV.
12:33One in New Zealand.
12:34Trust you're enjoying this afternoon's telecast from Sandown.
12:36At the moment, Steve Ellery leading the way from Mark Scaife.
12:42Terrific performance from Ellery.
12:44Oh!
12:44Look at the curves.
12:46Just an indication of their pressures.
12:48Steve Ellery's on it, but he's doing a great job so far.
12:51Let's have a look at the replay of this.
12:53Rick Murphy comes up and kisses the rear bumper, and...
12:56One up the rectum, don't affect him, but it does.
12:59I'm just wondering, though, the way that incident actually started.
13:04I was wondering whether Morris might have had a moment.
13:06Oh, Deagle McDeagle.
13:09Pepsi Cola machine.
13:11Now, is he OK?
13:11Yeah, he's getting back into the action as well.
13:13He's looped it around on that final turn that brings them onto the front straight.
13:17Looks like he's had a big hit in the passenger door there, too.
13:19Mark Scaife, headlights on, and look at Paul Radis.
13:21He's starting to close in on this battle.
13:26Rick Murphy after that altercation with Paul Morris.
13:30See a bit of smoke puffing from that right front wheel.
13:33Doesn't seem to be slowing his progress too much at the moment.
13:35Right up behind the Team Asia online car.
13:38We're on board.
13:39As he tries to find a way past John Faulkner.
13:41Up the back straight.
13:42Walker, in-car Camry.
13:43You're riding with the Flying Kiwi.
13:45Looks down the inside.
13:46Hard under brakes.
13:47At the end of the back straight.
13:48250 kilometres an hour as they come flying over that blind brow.
13:51Tell you what, this is Kiwi Central here because Faulkner's just ahead of Murphy in 12th position and Craig Baird's one ahead of him.
13:59Now, we're being told from officials at the circuit here that there is going to be a stop-go penalty for Greg Murphy as a result of that incident with Paul Morris.
14:07So, will he come in this time around?
14:08They're very close to the pit entry.
14:10Look at the shake on that wheel.
14:11I mean, he's had smoke puffing from the right front to her.
14:15Looks like it's really causing a lot of vibration through the steering column.
14:19They've obviously sorted Faulkner's car out because he was saying he was having terrible trouble top speed-wise.
14:25But top speed looks okay now.
14:27For the order at the moment, Stephen Ellery, Mark Scaife in second, Paul Radisic closing in third, Craig Lowndes, Mark Larkham, John Bauer, Neil Crompton in seventh, Paul Whale in eighth.
14:36Tony Longhurst in ninth, and Garth Tanner now climbs into the top ten.
14:40The guy's fighting hard.
14:41That's a great drive from Tanner.
14:43Radisic is definitely the quickest man on the circuit on lap eight at 1.12.49.
14:47Well, I was talking to DJI's engine man, Warren Robb, after that race one, and he said, rubbing his hands together, he said,
14:54you watch us go at Bathurst, he has a lot of confidence about the amount of horsepower this team has found this year.
15:01He said, let us free on those long straights at Mount Panorama in top gear and watch our cars go.
15:06Pretty ominous sign.
15:07This car is very fast on what is known as a horsepower circuit.
15:10This is the rat of old today, isn't it?
15:12I mean, the sort of things we've seen him do over the years.
15:14He is pumped up and trying to give this team a round victory that they desperately need.
15:18Now he hooks in like a magnet on the back of Mark Scaife, the run down the front straight.
15:23Seven laps remaining for our race leader, and the Ford flags are flying high at Sandown Park this afternoon.
15:29They've got something to cheer about for a change.
15:32Ford really in contention for a round victory here.
15:34As we look at the field, there's Garb Tander.
15:37Lights on, he's been doing an incredible job storming through the field.
15:40Greg Murphy coming in to serve his stop-go penalty.
15:44Gets the green, back out to the action.
15:47He's really been in the walls in heat too.
15:48Tremendous performance from the young West Aussie, 23-year-old Garth Tander, who this season has been incredible.
15:56Let it early on.
15:58Dropped back to third position.
16:01Recently wrestled that back and moved into second in the series and is chasing Mark Scaife for the title.
16:09Murphy, yep, gets back into the action.
16:11Radisic was 0.3 of a second quicker than both Scaifey and Ellery last night.
16:16Craig Baird sitting in behind the Valvoline Cummins machine as Garth Tander desperately tries to claw back position.
16:23He's now in 10th place up ahead of him.
16:24Oh, look at this!
16:25Look at Paul Radisic now.
16:28Mark Scaife is a busy man at Sandown Park this afternoon.
16:31He's trying to track down that super cheap Ordo's Falcon in front.
16:33He's under attack from the shell forward behind.
16:36The blue oval has come alive at Sandown this afternoon.
16:39Look at this!
16:39Arlunda breaks.
16:40Scaife defending his line on the inside.
16:43Paul Radisic.
16:44Now the switch, Mark.
16:45Does he do it?
16:45He can't get there.
16:48Great pictures.
16:50Be interested to see if Radisic gets a really good run, clean run onto the back screen.
16:55Just like this.
16:56Oh, watch this.
16:57This is going to be...
16:58Oh, maybe Scaife's shot out of him.
17:01This is the big horsepower battle.
17:02Been talking about these cars.
17:04Sure forwards were like missiles at Mount Panorama last year.
17:08And this car has been very quick here all weekend.
17:10But Scaife got a good run out of that turn.
17:12He's able to match Radisic in a straight line.
17:15Yeah, there's nothing.
17:16You'd have to say there's nothing in it between Radisic and Scaifey.
17:20So, Mark Scaife with his hands full here.
17:23Trying to chase Ellery.
17:25He's opened up a couple of car lengths on this battle.
17:27But you've got Radisic in behind him.
17:29And you've got Craig Lowndes in fourth.
17:32Two Fords, two Commodores going hammer and tong the way it should be in V8 supercar racing.
17:37Fans have really got something to cheer about here this afternoon.
17:39Mark Larkin in fifth.
17:41John Bauer in sixth.
17:42Neil Compton four-wheel.
17:43Tony Longhurst and Garth Tander still in tenth place.
17:46Oh, you're talking about the Fords there, Mark, and how well Stephen Ellery is going.
17:50And we can see the Rad doing an exceptional job there in third position.
17:52Just a reminder that the Ford Banner Competition, folks, is back on at the FII 1000.
17:57So, get the paintbrushes out.
17:59It's got to have that famous Ford oval on it.
18:01And the logo must be about a metre in diameter.
18:03And, of course, it's got to be visible somewhere around the perimeter of the track on Saturday, the 18th of November.
18:09The main prize of beauty, a Tickford Enhanced 200-kilowatt Falcon XR8 valued at 55 grand.
18:16So, just keep an eye on sports tonight.
18:17Thames IndyCar coverage of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix for further details on that one.
18:21Should be a beauty as the Rad continues to try and chase down Scaife.
18:25Lowndes is catching Radice's now.
18:29Yeah.
18:30Mark Scaife has not been able to pass the super cheap autos car.
18:36So, they're really getting a bunch up here.
18:38Four cars, line astern.
18:40An amazing performance from Stephen Ellery.
18:43It's great to see him in a position where he can show his true talents.
18:47This car obviously working very, very well around here.
18:51Craig Hasted, building the engines, lead by the chief engineer.
18:55They're only a small crew.
18:57But they've got unbanded enthusiasm and a real determination to win.
19:01And they are doing a fantastic job at Sandown Park this afternoon.
19:04Hard underbrakes at the end of the straight.
19:06Ellery, Scaife in second.
19:08Radice in third.
19:09Lowndes in fourth.
19:10Five laps remaining for our race leader, Mark Larkin.
19:12There's John Bowne in the Caterpillar Ford.
19:14Good and strong performance from the Tasmanian this afternoon.
19:18And 12 different race winners this season.
19:20Could Stephen Ellery become the 13th?
19:22We'll soon find out.
19:23Let's have a listen to John Bowne around Sandown.
19:26We'll soon find out.
19:27We'll soon find out.
19:29We'll soon find out.
19:29Let's go.
20:33Right on the back of this freight train, up in front, seven Fords in the top ten at the moment.
20:39No wonder the Blue Oval Brigade are screaming here at Sandow.
20:42Eight in the top twelve, you're looking at.
20:44This is the way V8 racing should be, isn't it?
20:46Ford and Holman, evenly matched, going at it, hammer and tong, door to door.
20:51This is absolute breathtaking stuff.
20:54I mean, Steve Ellery's saying the same thing, Mark, at the moment.
20:56This is the way it should be.
20:57One of the best circuits in the country.
20:59It's known at a horsepower track.
21:013.1 kilometres.
21:03Absolutely thrilling stuff.
21:04The crowd, spellbound by this performance by Steve Ellery, has come out of nowhere.
21:09And he's doing an amazing job out here.
21:12Defending hard from Mark Scaife.
21:14He's got three laps remaining when he crosses the start finish line this time around.
21:17Can he bring it home?
21:19Paul Radisic, though, takes quite a different line.
21:22A more conservative line coming out of the corner, onto the main straight.
21:25Look at that big crowd here at Sandow.
21:28No shortage of horsepower from the Supercheap Ordos Falcon.
21:31The Ford flags are flying high today.
21:33Massive crowd in here at Sandow.
21:35Mark Scaife trying hard to find his way past that Supercheap Ordos machine.
21:38The Shell Hill export it.
21:39Oh, Lowndes gets very sideways coming off the curbs out of that turn
21:43as he tries to close the gap to this leading trio.
21:47And I'm back aboard with Paul Radisic on the tail of Mark Scaife as they work
21:51up Repco Hill, the back straight area of this circuit.
21:56Stephen Ellery, just 26 years of age, living on the Gold Coast.
22:00His first race back in go-karting in 1987.
22:0443 Shell Championship starts.
22:06His best championship result so far.
22:0815th here he is battling for the lead with our championship leader.
22:10What a remarkable turnaround in this man's relatively short career.
22:14He just wants to try and keep it off the curbs on the way out of the corner
22:17because I spoke to him before and he said,
22:19oh yeah, I just got it on the curb and booted it
22:21and it's just lost a bit of traction onto the straight.
22:24That's where Scaife he got.
22:25This is incredible when you consider his health at the moment.
22:28He hasn't been feeling well, suffering from mac glandular fever,
22:31but he's doing a sensational job out in front.
22:33Look at the rat now.
22:34Has he got a good roll of Scaife?
22:36We'll soon find out he's not close enough.
22:39He's got the legs.
22:40He's been trying to come out of that corner much shallower,
22:42so he's actually got less track to cover.
22:44Two laps remaining, just over six kilometres of racing left.
22:47Can Stephen Ellery hang on?
22:49I have to say, I hope so.
22:51Well, it's just an extraordinary performance, isn't it, Baz?
22:54I mean, there's a guy who's been running in the 10 to 20 section of the grid
22:59this weekend as a result of that stunning qualifying performance yesterday.
23:04Oh, look at it.
23:05He got himself a good starting position.
23:08Don't forget, lots of things coming up on your home of motorsport.
23:10One of them, the Honda Indy on the Gold Coast,
23:12the 14th and 15th of October.
23:15And that's not all.
23:15We've got some two-wheeled entertainment for you as well.
23:17So we head to the island for the final of the motorcycle Grand Prix
23:23and the big one, the FAI 1000 at Bathurst,
23:25the 18th and 19th of November.
23:27That should be sensational if we use today's racing here as Sandown
23:31as any basis or judge of that.
23:34Yeah, well, these cars are very evenly matched, aren't they?
23:36There is nothing in this.
23:37The AU XR8 Falcon and the VT Commodore
23:40are absolutely evenly matched around Sandown Park.
23:43One lap remaining for Stephen Ellery
23:46as he brings it onto the pit straight once again.
23:48The rat goes for his inside line,
23:51but not enough real estate there to make a move on Mark Scaife.
23:54So positions remain static.
23:55Maximum pressure here for Stephen Ellery.
23:58If you can just keep it off the curve on the straight,
24:01on to the back straight, he should be OK.
24:04Scaife, he looks pretty quick.
24:05The last left-hander at the end of the straight,
24:09Scaife is pretty quick.
24:10No doubt a lot of people keeping an eye on the progress of Garth Tander.
24:13There he is in the background in contention still for the championship
24:16with Mark Scaife.
24:17Tander is in 10th spot at the moment.
24:20Oh, look at this up in front.
24:22Scaife having a look at Ellery.
24:23He must have had a moment.
24:24Coming out of that Eastern Nats court,
24:26he's been getting sideways out of there on a couple of occasions.
24:28The rat's still in contention.
24:31Heart in the mouth stuff.
24:32There's Steve's mum watching on.
24:34Absolutely everything crossed.
24:36Oh, dear.
24:37Fingernails being bitten off.
24:40This is just breathtaking.
24:42Can he hold it together?
24:43Half a lap remaining for Stephen Ellery.
24:45Guides it out of there.
24:46Have a look back, Barker.
24:48Good departure from XR2.
24:49And he's got this final little switch back here
24:51to bring it onto the pit straight.
24:53He will bring home his first victory.
24:55Looking good.
24:56Shell Championship Series.
24:58Hang in there, Stephen.
24:58He's had a good clean run.
25:00The 26-year-old from the Gold Coast.
25:01Steve Ellery breaks through
25:02for his first ever Shell Championship Series win.
25:06Well done to the team.
25:07Mum can't believe it.
25:08I know his father, Bruce.
25:11The whole team have worked very, very hard.
25:13And they are a very proud mum and dad.
25:16Stephen Ellery can stand tall.
25:17He has been the best in the business.
25:20And he's done it.
25:21Sandown Park this afternoon.
25:23What an outstanding drive.
25:24And he's done it tough too, Mark.
25:25He is not a well boy at the moment.
25:27But done a lot of development work on this car.
25:29It's a very small team, as Mark mentioned.
25:32And against the odds, you might say,
25:34he has done it.
25:34Stephen Ellery.
25:35A race win from Mark Scaife,
25:37our Championship Leader.
25:39There's the other man in contention for the title.
25:41Garth Tander caught a brief shot of him a moment ago.
25:43Tenth position he finished.
25:44Let's recap them for you.
25:46Ellery is the man of the moment.
25:47He takes race two in round 12.
25:49Scaife home second.
25:51The Rat in third.
25:52So possibly looking good for him
25:53in terms of a round victory today.
25:55And then it was Lowndes.
25:56Mark Larkham.
25:57John Bauer.
25:57Neil Crompton worked his way up to seventh.
25:59What about that?
25:59A stunning performance from Paul Wheel to get home height.
26:02Further back, Tander, Beard, Faulkner and Ingle.
26:05We'll take a break and come back with more on the other side of this.
26:07Do you want to see 40 V8s chase a rat up a mountain?
26:12Win a VIP expenses paid trip to Bathurst
26:15with the Dick Johnson Racing Team and Shell Helix.
26:18Spend time with Paul Radisic, Dick Johnson and Barry Sheen
26:21in the 10 commentary box.
26:23There's also great virtual racing prizes from Microsoft V1 plus rat caps.
26:28To enter, call 1-9-0-2-3-5-5-6-1-0 now.
26:32Quoting the last four digits of your Shell Helix barcode.
26:36The question is, will they ever catch me?
26:46There is just no margin for error in V8 supercar racing.
26:50Poor old Larry Perkins stalled and got clouded by Stephen Richards
26:53who had nowhere to go in that one.
26:56Well, 13 might be an unlucky number for some.
26:58Not for others.
26:59Stephen Ellery, our 13th different race winner this season.
27:02Paul Wheel, a stunning move from him from 15th to 8th in that race.
27:05Barry Perkins because of that crash at DNF.
27:07And Garth Tander went from the rear of the grid virtually
27:09up into 10th position.
27:11Here's Mark Osler.
27:13Well, an amazing moment at Sandow Park this afternoon.
27:16Stephen Ellery, you've come out of nowhere
27:17and beat the best in the business.
27:19What an extraordinary moment.
27:20Oh, it's just unbelievable.
27:22I'd like to thank the person who thought up the reverse top six.
27:25It's helped me immensely.
27:26But we've been waiting for this for a long time and it's very sweet.
27:30We saw your mum and your dad there just with everything crossed,
27:32biting their fingernails.
27:33It must have been a great moment for them too.
27:34It's a very close-knit family-style team, isn't it?
27:36Oh, we are, you know.
27:37And even the team, you know, we're all mates
27:39and we all get along very well.
27:40And we go to the pub and have a few beers together.
27:42And, you know, to get this, it's not just for me.
27:45It's for everybody, the whole team, you know.
27:46We've worked so hard over the last couple of weeks.
27:48So it's great.
27:49Might see you on the podium.
27:50Best of luck.
27:51Oh, I hope so.
27:52That'd be great.
27:53Thanks, mate.
27:54Well done.
27:55It's time for Team Ford and a chance to win this fabulous TS50.
28:00This year, one of the great names from Ford US
28:03makes a welcome return to Australia.
28:05The Mustang, the 240-kilowatt Cobra.
28:08It's fitted with a 4.6-litre quad cam, 32-valve, all-alloy V8
28:13that achieves 0 to 100 in around six seconds.
28:17So it's a fast street car with some very nice engineering refinements,
28:20like Sinterforged alloy conrods, for example, and Racecraft springs and shockers.
28:25And it has fantastic stopping power with PBR calipers on 13-inch Brembo rotors.
28:31Inside, leather trim, power-assisted everything,
28:34and quality sound from a premium Clarion system.
28:37You'll be able to order the Mustang Cobra with the convertible or hardtop body style
28:42through your FTE by Ford dealer.
28:44Put yourself in pole position to win this exhilarating TS50 presented at Bathurst.
28:49Call the number on your screen and answer this simple question.
28:54Yeah, it's a great competition, that one.
28:56Make sure you get your entry in early.
28:57Lots of different things to keep the fans entertained here today.
29:00This one a little extreme, the V8 jet sprint boat racing demonstration
29:04happening on the lake in the middle of the track.
29:06These things go from 0 to 130km an hour in three seconds.
29:10And in recent years, two adrenaline junkies you're probably more familiar with,
29:14Jason Barguana and Greg Murphy, have both dabbled in this sport.
29:17Right now, though, let's go to Barry Sheen, who's down in the pits.
29:21Yeah, thanks, Greg.
29:22I'm down here with Jason Bright, who's going to be racing at the IndyCar race.
29:26Now, are you looking forward to it?
29:27Yeah, it should be great.
29:28You know, it's been a long time since we've had in Australia
29:30and racing, you know, the champ cars on Formula One,
29:32and I'm, you know, pretty privileged to be that person.
29:34And how did the test go?
29:35Did you enjoy it?
29:36Yeah, it was a blast.
29:37You know, it's something I've been aspiring to do for a long time.
29:40So to finally get in a champ car and drive out of the pits, you know,
29:43it was one of the best moments of my life.
29:45Was it frighteningly quick?
29:47Was it a big surprise compared to the Indy Lights?
29:50Yeah, it's certainly got a lot of horsepower.
29:51I mean, you know, that's something that certainly catches your eye.
29:54But as far as driving the car,
29:56it's not that much different to an Indy Lights car
29:58or a Formula Holden here in Australia.
30:00But, yeah, I mean, it's all about the power.
30:02And what would be the best thing you could hope for at Indy?
30:04I guess, you know, we just really want to finish the race.
30:07You know, I want to finish my first champ car race.
30:09If we can finish that first race in the top 15, it would be a success.
30:13So, you know, we're not going in there expecting to win the race or anything
30:16because, you know, it's a bit unrealistic.
30:18So we just want to go up there, have a good, solid performance
30:21and, you know, try and get a drive in champ cars next year
30:24and come back and win the thing next year.
30:26So what are you doing?
30:27After Indy, you're going back to America to race in another Indy Lights race.
30:31Then you're coming back to Bathurst.
30:32Yeah, it's pretty busy at the moment.
30:33The next three races I do will all be in different cars.
30:36So, yeah, you know, I'm going back to America straight after the Gold Coast race
30:39to do the final round of the Indy Lights Championship
30:42and then come back and do the big one at Bathurst.
30:45And you're racing for DJR, Dick Johnson Racing at Bathurst.
30:48Who with?
30:49Yeah, it should be great.
30:50You know, at the moment it's still undecided as to who with.
30:52But, you know...
30:53It's got to be with Radity.
30:54They've certainly got the cars working well now
30:56and, you know, I'm looking forward to getting up to Bathurst
30:58where they were really competitive last year.
31:00So when will you have a first run in Dick's car?
31:02I've got to run in Dick's cars on Wednesday of next week
31:05straight after the Gold Coast at Ipswich.
31:08So, you know, I'm looking forward to getting back in a V8
31:10and thundering around Ipswich.
31:12Well, we'll keep our fingers crossed for both events.
31:14Thanks, Barry.
31:15Best of luck, Chase.
31:15Who's your favourite movie star?
31:20Oh, that'd be Meg Ryan, for sure.
31:22Just because she's sensational.
31:25Oh, that'd be Marlon Brando from The Wild Ones.
31:28I mean, it took me 30 years later,
31:29but I eventually went out and bought a Harley Doverson.
31:31So, yeah, good fun.
31:35Male, I'd say Dustin Hoffman.
31:36I still remember Rayman pretty well.
31:39Female, Julia Roberts, just because.
31:41And actually, there's a few actors out here that we race against.
31:43So, yeah, there's a whole bunch.
31:47Definitely Steve McQueen.
31:48I reckon anyone that can jump a Harley over a fence is pretty damn good.
31:52Mr Magoo, someone who can get away with that much
31:55and still be alive today.
31:57It's pretty impressive.
32:00I've just seen the Hurricanes,
32:01I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:03because he was really inspirational in that one.
32:05I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:07and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:07and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:08and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:09and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:10and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:11and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:12and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:13and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:14and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:15and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:16and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:17and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:18and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:19and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:20and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:21and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
32:22and I'd have to say Denver, Washington,
