00:00One of four Kiwis in this field.
00:03They're all doing pretty well at the moment, aren't they?
00:04They're making their mark.
00:06Scott McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard.
00:09Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:11We've seen them all up at the top.
00:14It's going to be quick, Crumpo.
00:15In fact, I dragged out.
00:16If you take the total available 15 podium positions,
00:19he's just gone to position four.
00:21Wow, how's the wheel work?
00:23We've had 15 podium slots in our first portion of the season.
00:28Been occupied by nine different drivers
00:31and five different race teams.
00:34So you've got to say that while everyone grapples
00:36to make these new cars work,
00:38we're seeing lots of the variety that we all love to see
00:40at the sharp end of the field.
00:42I mean, I thought that was an impressive number.
00:44And the top three in the championship,
00:46Winkup, Davison and Courtney, yet to register a race win.
00:51Let's watch Alex go to work.
00:56He's in 14th.
00:57It's a really funny corner.
00:59When you crest that hill,
01:00the temptation is to grab the throttle early.
01:03If you do grab it early,
01:04you find either the brown or the green stuff on the outside.
01:07It's an odd corner.
01:09It requires a lot of patience,
01:10but at the same time,
01:11a pretty significant commitment to make the pace.
01:13Good job.
01:14Davison there.
01:15Into ninth.
01:16So bright Winkup Reynolds.
01:17McLaughlin Lowndes.
01:19Tim Slade's day has ended early.
01:21We're qualifying anyway, Tim,
01:22after a knock with the wall.
01:23Yeah, I mean,
01:25I've been having some dramas flipping on the down changes,
01:28just with the way everything's at at the moment.
01:30And, you know,
01:31looking what Lee was doing yesterday,
01:34sort of tried to do what he was doing this morning,
01:37and it didn't really quite work out.
01:38And just locked the rears and went off and tapped a wall
01:41and done a bit of suspension damage.
01:43Tim, bigger picture, though.
01:44You're finding improvement in the car?
01:46Yeah, definitely.
01:47You know,
01:48it was nice to qualify in the mid-teens in Tassie,
01:51and Lee showed great pace yesterday,
01:54and we were a little bit away,
01:55which was a little bit disappointing.
01:56But, you know,
01:57hopefully we can move our way forward throughout this weekend.
01:59Good luck for the weekend, Tim.
02:01And it's interesting,
02:02while Bretz was talking to Tim there,
02:04I went in search of Lee Holtworth's time,
02:06and early on in this session,
02:07he was right up there,
02:08but he's drifted down to 24.
02:10His best is a 1.029.
02:11Yesterday, he pocketed a 1.032 correction.
02:17So, 1.039, his best here.
02:20He's seven-tenths off the pace that he had yesterday,
02:23just when he needs it to in qualifying.
02:26Jamie Winkup, second behind Bright.
02:29And last night, deep into the evening,
02:31a long and extensive debrief at Red Bull Racing Australia.
02:34They're all sitting around the table there,
02:35contemplating the performance of this car.
02:37Had a broken anti-roll bar,
02:39which slowed proceedings in one of the practice sessions
02:41but I think what has been very impressive
02:47with the start of the championship for these guys,
02:50and in particular this man,
02:52is he hasn't been able to create an engineer,
02:54a race-winning car,
02:56but the flat performance of consistently scoring points
02:59has put him at the top of the championship.
03:00So, if you want to get off to the right start
03:03to win another title,
03:05it's absolutely how you'd want to go about achieving it.
03:07So, you know, it's very impressive
03:09to consider the way in which he's going about doing this.
03:13Good job there, too.
03:14He was sideways, Neil.
03:15As you were talking,
03:16he put his foot on the brake,
03:17it locked the right-hand front.
03:19He's done the fastest first sector.
03:20He's up by .53 on his own lap time.
03:25And when he turned at the hairpin,
03:27it locked the rears and slid the whole way.
03:29He's got great car control.
03:31Your point about how he started the year
03:33has been very, very impressive,
03:34and he goes to one with a 2.55.
03:37Best time of the weekend.
03:38And off the road, David Wall at the top of the hill.
03:41He had all four in the green there.
03:43That was a wild ride.
03:44Hopefully he's popped out the other side okay,
03:46and he has.
03:46We've seen him go by our commentary point.
03:48So, two seconds, a third, a fourth, and a fifth so far.
03:51So, the worst performance for Witt Cup
03:53in the season so far has been a fifth.
03:55So, that's great management, risk management of the task.
04:00Mark Winterbottom leading forward now into second.
04:04So, there's proof that David Wall survived.
04:10I'd be interested to check his heart rate.
04:12Yeah, it would have been 190 when he was arrowing in there.
04:15So, let's check out the top ten
04:16with a minute and a half remaining.
04:17It's Winkup at 1.025.
04:19That's a super quick time.
04:21Half a second back is Mark Winterbottom.
04:23Then Brighton, Lowndes, Reynolds, Kramer, Garth Tanner.
04:27Oh, Coulthard's jumped into second.
04:29Scott McLaughlin now.
04:31Ninth and James Courtney on the bubble.
04:32Tenth.
04:33I was about to say that Jamie had a half-second margin,
04:35which is a little unheard of in the category at the moment,
04:37but Fabian quickly narrowed that now.
04:39It's just a little under three-tenths of a second.
04:45So, remember, these guys have a top ten shootout to do.
04:49Oh, they're Gisberger.
04:50They're all off.
04:52Caruso.
04:53Look at Brighton.
04:53Oh, sorry, it was Moffat.
04:55That was out of control.
04:56All of them were off the road.
04:58It would be dirt on the road up there.
05:01I thought Brighton was going to rotate then
05:04at about the start-finish line.
05:07I reckon he would have thought so too.
05:08Rick Kelly in 13th.
05:11He drops down a few now because Alex Davison's gone ahead of him.
05:16Is that Moffat again?
05:21I thought it was Caruso originally,
05:23but I thought it might have been Moffat when he was right outside away.
05:26Brighton's just apologising to Andrew Edwards on the radio.
05:29Lee Holdsworth off at Turn 4 here.
05:31With this big bump here.
05:33On the inside kerb there, it's quite high.
05:35Hopefully that didn't bang the front of the car.
05:37And Jason's indication on the dashboard was he was up on his own lap
05:41and he apologised to the team for getting it wrong at the last corner.
05:44So that's how hard they're pushing.
05:45Change at the top.
05:47We've got Winnabottom P3, Premo, position 4.
05:50Look at off on the road here.
05:51Lowndes is in.
05:52He's going to hit the fence.
05:53Oh, that is unbelievable.
05:56Seriously close.
05:57That is as close as that car.
05:59All good.
06:00Got it off.
06:01Bring it in.
06:01We made it.
06:02So look up there.
06:03Thanks, mate.
06:04Hey, you just made it.
06:06Millimetres.
06:07Jeremy, how was that for engineering talk?
06:10That would be glass half full chat.
06:12All good.
06:13And we made it.
06:15Oh, Kelly off at turn 4.
06:16Watch Lowndes in the background.
06:18On the grass.
06:19Opposite lot.
06:20Skates here.
06:21A couple of hundred kilometres an hour.
06:24And manages not to wipe the rear wing down the wall.
06:28That's millimetre perfect, really.
06:30So Winncup leads the way.
06:32This will be the make-up of the top 10 shootout for race 6.
06:36Fabian Coulthard, as I mentioned, Mark Winterbottom,
06:38the leading four.
06:39Great job from Alex Premis.
06:41Scotty McLaughlin's inside that top 10 as well.
06:43So too is Shane Van Gisbergen.
06:45So three Kiwis inside the top 10.
06:47There's a lot to cheer about for the local crowd here at Pukekohe Park Raceway.
06:51Russell Ingle to start from 22nd.
06:53And Tim Slade goes in search of the problems at the Erebus Motorsport E63 AMG.
06:59We'll also check out what happened to Todd Kelly at the end of that session.
07:04Back after this break from New Zealand.
07:05Well, there's no time to rest at all this weekend, the ITM 400 Auckland.
07:16It's back-to-back qualifying sessions with a twist.
07:19So they've determined the top 10 list for the race 6 qualifier.
07:24They will do that shootout after this session.
07:26This is a flat-out 15-minute run to the flag to determine the grid for race 7.
07:32The mentality of this is very hard to deal with, Matt, because you've just had a qualifying session.
07:37There are good news stories for some and some really bad news stories for others.
07:41And you've got to wipe the slate clean and get on with the next 15 minutes.
07:44And this is now a qualifying session that will determine your grid position for race 7.
07:50So it's very important that you just clear all that and get on with it.
07:54And Scafie, completely different to Tasmania.
07:56Remember, we had the chat down there in between the two qualifying sessions.
07:59It was very settled on pit lane in that little break.
08:02Well, I can tell you, totally different here at Pukekohe.
08:05I mean, the drama we just heard from engineers and Mark Winterbottom.
08:08And don't take for granted how difficult it is to sort your race car out for qualifying on these bumps.
08:14Everyone down here has a headache.
08:16It was very hard, I can tell you, trying to grab a couple of interviews.
08:18Everyone was deep in engineering speak.
08:20Tell us the story.
08:21So just to clarify, this is qualifying for race 7 later on this afternoon.
08:27Whoever tops the list in this little session will start from pole position for the second race of the afternoon.
08:33And then after this, the top 10 are going to have to regroup and fight it out for qualifying for race 6
08:38to put the final punctuation mark on that.
08:42And further adding to this little quandary of how you deal with the two back-to-back qualifying sessions,
08:47there's little or no reaction time.
08:48So what are the things that you could quickly change?
08:51You could affect some shock absorber adjustments, perhaps, front or rear.
08:56And the way in which you control the high and low speed characteristics in both directions of the damper.
09:01You could perhaps make a little change to tyre pressure.
09:05And you could perhaps make a little change to what we call the ride height or rake in the car.
09:10After that, and maybe a little bit of wing.
09:11But after that, gee whiz, there's not much you can do in the very narrow window available to you.
09:16If you start to get into suspension geometry and those sorts of tasks, you could trap yourself with a lack of time.
09:22So this is very much a case of bolt on another set of tyres, go do some of that fancy driver stuff.
09:28Because it really is going to be about seat-of-the-pants driving, isn't it?
09:33And this bloke did a very good job of that fancy driver stuff.
09:36That was a very, very good lap.
09:38But 2.55 is almost three-tenths of a second faster than the next car.
09:44The fastest lap of the weekend.
09:46And he was ultra committed.
09:47I love the way when you watch him at his best, he is as committed as anyone we've ever seen in this sport.
09:54He's Brock-esque when he's got the car right on the ragged edge.
10:00First time this weekend for 888 Race Engineering.
10:04And a Holden product at Pukakoe as we jump on board with Will Davison.
10:08Second in the championship.
10:11Two green boxes, so a good opening lap for the FPR boys.
10:15Mark Winterbottom goes to the top and then Will beats him with a 1.03 flat.
10:20So they've replicated their times.
10:22Winterbottom has done almost exactly the same time.
10:25Davison a lot better than his previous run.
10:27His previous best was a 3.19, so he's gone faster immediately.
10:32James Moffitt on a very good first sector.
10:34McLaughlin now to the top on a 3.03.
10:36So remember, these times, they stand.
10:39This is for Race 7 qualifying.
10:41Someone's in the fence at Turn 4.
10:43Someone's in the fence down there.
10:46Is it Tander?
10:46And he's in the way now of McLaughlin.
10:48So that's Hurt McLaughlin coming onto the back straight.
10:51That was Tander off through the fence.
10:52And I think he caught the wall.
10:58Winkup responds, but he can't beat Scott McLaughlin's time.
11:02So Winkup into second.
11:041.100 of a second away.
11:07Moffitt, meanwhile, has come up to eighth with that lap that we said.
11:10So he's in a 3.29.
11:12The field is incredibly close in this first part of qualifying.
11:17Caruso into tenth with a 3.45.
11:20So McLaughlin currently the leader.
11:22Oh, Ingalls off again down at Turn 4.
11:24When I say again, he was in the wall down there at Turn 2 yesterday.
11:27So that little section of racetrack's proving problematic for Rusty at the moment.
11:32So we're seeing a few errors down there.
11:34It's a very difficult place to pull the cars up from high speed and change their direction.
11:38And oh, great shot of Premo.
11:41He did a great job before.
11:42He was fourth in the previous session.
11:45Very, very fast.
11:46That was a great job at 3.06.
11:49He's looking for Premo now at 3.63.
11:51So he may have used the old tyres to get him going.
11:53This is Ingalls with the wheels locked.
11:55Front wheels are locked.
11:56Trying to get some steering on the car.
11:58Nothing happens like that.
11:59He's come off the brake.
12:01And he's just...
12:03Can't really see in the shade.
12:04I don't know whether he quite makes it.
12:05Yes, he does.
12:06Just into the fence.
12:07He'd have been clenching because they've got through a few spares last night in the repair of that car.
12:13Russell's one of five guys that have been here for all of the championship races.
12:19The guys that have got a lot of experience.
12:20He's at the top of the tree because he was also here back in 1996 when we brought just a dozen cars over for a special event, not championships.
12:29So Russell's had a lot of experience in the racetrack.
12:32There's a puzzle for him down at turns 2, 3 and 4 at the moment.
12:35Rick Kelly was 15th in the previous session.
12:37So he was the lead Nissan Altima in the previous session.
12:41Didn't make the top 10.
12:42So he'll start 15th.
12:44We watched these cars very closely yesterday, Neil, and they were very impressive.
12:49He's missed the apex of the final corner.
12:51That will have cost him time.
12:53He got it turned in and it ran wide.
12:56So Coulthard, you can see the lower right-hand side of screen showing good sector splits.
13:01Here he is on camera at the moment at turn 5.
13:03Missed it.
13:05James Moffat, incidentally, is inside the top 10 in the Nissan Altima.
13:09He's 8th at the moment.
13:10Another fine effort.
13:12There's only two guys, three guys, in fact, in the top 10 that are on the track at the moment.
13:16Everybody else has come in for their first adjustment or another tyre set.
13:19And remember when we left you on that last qualifying session, Todd Kelly was into the wall.
13:27He sent the boys down there to get an update.
13:28He's yet to go back out onto the circuit.
13:32Into the tyre bundle in the first qualifying session, lads.
13:34Look at this one for Fabian.
13:36He beats his Kiwi counterpart at the top and delivers a 1.02.9.
13:42On board now.
13:43Courtney.
13:44Courtney much better in this session.
13:46He's 6th at the moment.
13:47Good start to the championship for him.
13:51A podium last weekend in Tasmania.
13:53Third in the championship series.
13:55And the Holton Racing Team this weekend paying a tribute to the Anzac Spirit.
13:59Anzac Day coming up on the 25th of April.
14:01Here's the reason why Todd Kelly finds himself in the garage.
14:05This little glance off the tyre wall.
14:08I have to also add the fact these tyre walls, they've done a great job in the preparation of the circuits.
14:12Huge job and a lot of expense to get all that right.
14:15Nice work.
14:16So Fabian Coulthard, the target at the moment.
14:18A 1 minute 2.9.
14:33Back at Pukekohe Park Raceway.
14:35This is qualifying for race 7 later on this afternoon.
14:38One of the most unique situations in the championship where we'll determine pole position for the second race before the first race of the day.
14:48Because the top 10 shootout is still to be sorted for race 6.
14:51Here's David Reynolds, the Bottolo Ford.
14:53Car 55 is in 14th.
14:54Fastest to the first sector.
14:56So Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin, former Kiwi 1-2 at the top.
15:01With just under 7 minutes remaining.
15:04Only 4 cars are on the circuit at this time.
15:09Which is quite clever.
15:10You need to be out of sync with all the cars that are in the pit.
15:12So Dave Reynolds with clear track.
15:14We heard Mark Winterbottom talk about how hard it is to actually get a lap together at this place.
15:20Dave Reynolds was quite competitive yesterday.
15:22He was 8th in the previous session.
15:24So he'll go into the top 10 shootout after this.
15:26And Reynolds goes to P2 with a 2.96.
15:29I think he's going to stay in this.
15:31Look at the wheel work through turn 1.
15:34Right here is where the trouble's been happening at 2-3-4.
15:37That little string of corners down there at the northern end of the circuit.
15:42Dave's coming to terms with a new engineering relationship in this team this year.
15:46He was with James Small for many years.
15:47He's now with Nathaniel Osborne who's looking after him.
15:50Been a tough start to the championship.
15:52But it looks like he's got his rhythm back this weekend.
15:54And got the car to his liking which is encouraging.
15:56But he's down in 25th place in the championship.
16:00So he needs to get some points together and reignite his championship.
16:04Remember that brilliant drive for him at Bathurst last year.
16:07One car length away effectively from Jamie Wincup at the back end of the race.
16:10So a little mistake for him there at the hairpin.
16:12It's ruined the lap.
16:13What a shame.
16:14But P2 at the moment.
16:15He's on the front row of the grid.
16:17Always good to see a healthy number against your name at the end of it.
16:21And the margins minuscule.
16:22Just very quickly boys.
16:23You can see over my shoulder there.
16:24Timmy Slade's car, the Erebus Mercedes, not going to make it back out.
16:27They've replaced the lower suspension arm down here.
16:30But Timmy's out of the car.
16:32You won't see him this session.
16:34Okay, mate.
16:38Wilson security entry.
16:40Johnny Reid, the other Kiwi, in the field.
16:43A lot of experience at this racetrack.
16:48Serious pedigree in Carrera Cup.
16:50Been runner-up in Australia for the last two seasons.
16:53And prior to Tasmania and the handful of V8 supercar races that he'd done, ironically,
16:58and he's done a sort of start-stop process for Johnny in V8 supercar.
17:02He'd never finished a race.
17:03So Tassie was a...
17:05They weren't fantastic results by his standards of the things that he's achieved in Open Wheelers
17:09and Carrera Cup.
17:10But he was probably quite relieved to get to the chequered flag.
17:20David Wall's been doing a really good job through the weekend.
17:23Probably the most competitive we've seen him.
17:25Meanwhile, Alex Premer also on quite a good lap.
17:33So Coulthard, Reynolds, McLaughlin, Winkup.
17:35Now, this will really heat up with only four minutes, 20 to go.
17:38Everybody basically back on track again.
17:41Davison and Winterbottom choosing to hold out right to the end.
17:45We saw Winterbottom do a great job of this in Tasmania.
17:48Those two guys are currently in the pit.
17:51Follow their progress.
17:52So Davison just coming back out now.
17:55This is Scott McLaughlin.
18:00Currently third.
18:02It's a long crawl down that pit lane entry of 40 kilometres an hour.
18:07We've got Todd Kelly out.
18:08That was Todd Kelly in the foreground with a 3.95.
18:12So although he's 24th, at least they've got him out.
18:16We've also got Tony Dalberto out there as well.
18:20We've waited for a good 10 minutes for this session to go
18:23before Team Hyflex rolled out car number three.
18:26Interesting to watch Winkup then.
18:28The way he got at turns five and six.
18:30He actually uses the extended portion of racetrack around five
18:34to keep the flow of the car going.
18:36He doesn't mind turning left then for turn six, sacrificing road.
18:40And I've seen a lot of different drivers attack it in a different way.
18:42That's the first clean view I've had of Jamie's approach to it.
18:46So the rolling speed is what mattered for him at turn five.
18:49Very interesting.
18:50How's the commitment of Winkup then for the final corner?
18:53Great job.
18:53A 2.72.
18:55But Lowndes now also.
18:57So look, this should put him to the top.
19:00Faster second sector for Craig Lowndes with two and a half minutes to go.
19:03And Lowndes does a 2.67, five hundredths of a second faster than his team mate.
19:11Craig Lowndes has had one pole position at this circuit back in 2005.
19:15Lowndes and Winkup yet to win a race here.
19:18Winkup hasn't had pole here.
19:19So it's a little inter-team battle going on at the top.
19:22And remembering, Matty, Kooltard and Winterbottom have just a part of the pit lane on new rubber.
19:27The danger for them now is they'll have a great track, plenty of rubber,
19:30but lots of traffic slowing down out there.
19:33And that's exactly the issue that we just saw on board.
19:38I think Winkup went through.
19:40I think he went through the complex and he had to slow right up.
19:44So his lap's over.
19:46So he'll have to regroup now to get a lap.
19:48But if you've got more, you can have another track.
19:50And Lowndes was on a good lap.
19:51So his split, the first intermediate, was the best in the session so far.
19:55But he's had completely rolled out of it to go again.
19:57As we go back to Jamie, I'm interested in Larco's remark about new tyres.
20:01So in the tyre management this weekend, these guys are committing to today.
20:04And I think what they'll do is use the best they've got for some of the sessions tomorrow.
20:10Because remember, we've got another couple of races qualifying tomorrow.
20:13So if they're getting into their second set of tyres in this session,
20:16they're drawing from their bank.
20:18And that's going to take tyres from tomorrow's act.
20:23Jason Bright currently in tenth.
20:32Coming off a pole and a race win at Simmons Plains.
20:34And that pushes Brighty up to sixth.
20:3625 cars on the racetrack at the moment, Matt.
20:39Only Reynolds and Reid in the pit lane.
20:41And so the congestion's going to be extreme.
20:46So a different strategy on the other side of the FPR garage.
20:49David Reynolds firing his bullet when most of the cars were in pit lane.
20:54And now they've unleashed Winterbottom at the deck here when it's really busy.
20:59He slots into fifth.
21:00So it's Lowndes and Wing Cup one and two.
21:03Fabian Coulthard and Garth Tander three and four.
21:07Winterbottom and Reynolds.
21:08And then Brighton Coulthard responds to the top.
21:12102.6.
21:14It's Phil Keat on the radio and we saw an image of Dean Fiore at the top of the hill.
21:18That looked scary.
21:19So 2.6 for Coulthard.
21:22It's just a whisker slower than Wing Cup's previous qualifying best.
21:26Todd Kelly in the background was right out sideways in the grass off the final corner.
21:34Remember Fabian Coulthard had that breakthrough weekend at Simmons Plains
21:37when he got his first ever V8 Supercar Championship wins.
21:41This would be his first ever pole position.
21:44But Mark Winterbottom, as always, has something to say about that.
21:48There's nothing in this.
21:49Six one hundredths is the difference.
21:51Coming through this final complex.
21:53Oh, he's missed it.
21:53He bumps and turns up over the rise.
21:57It won't be good enough.
21:58But his teammate Will Davison has something in the back as well.
22:01Wing Cup stays in fifth.
22:03This will be a nervous wait for Fabian to see if Will Davison has got what it takes to knock him off.
22:10No, he won't.
22:11Too much traffic.
22:12Frosty earned his first Ford Performance Racing pole back here in 07
22:16as we have a look at Alex Premier, the Frenchman.
22:19Car number 34 for Gary Rogers and Fujitsu.
22:22Two corners to run for him.
22:24Drifted away from him in the second sector there, Crompo.
22:26Three tenths.
22:27He was down on Fabian's time.
22:29So it'll be a miracle finish for Alex Premier to get his first pole position.
22:34His European experience of high-speed flying circuits is serving him well here this weekend.
22:38The minute the cars dropped on the road yesterday, and it was four practice sessions with the entire field
22:43not split into the two halves as we've seen previously because of the new track config.
22:48And he was instantly quick.
22:49Straight away out the gate.
22:51Bang.
22:51Right up near the top.
22:52So he's adjusted very quickly.
22:54He has done a very good job all weekend.
22:56Rick Kelly and Lee Holdsworth, 12th and 13th.
22:58New cars, 12th and 13th.
23:00Get ready for a few choice bros because Fabian Coulthard's done another piece of history in his career,
23:06his first ever pole position in the V8 Supercar Championship.
23:10So remember, this is the grid confirmed for race seven later on this afternoon.
23:15We've still got another qualifier because the top ten shootout for race six is lining up as well.
23:20But what a start to the weekend for the Kiwi Fabian Coulthard, Barretts.
23:24Oh, Matty, great moment for Fabian Coulthard, as you said.
23:27His first championship pole position, and to do it here is double good.
23:31Fabian, congratulations.
23:32A great way to start this weekend.
23:35Yeah, look, it's awesome to grab another pole, you know.
23:38Yeah, look, you know, the boys have worked very hard.
23:40You know, the car's awesome.
23:41Thanks to Lockwood, you know, all the guys at BJR.
23:44Can't ask for much more.
23:45You're going great, Guns, mate.
23:46Well done.
23:47Cheers.
23:47And he will still line up in the top ten shootout for race six as well.
23:53So this incredible momentum keeps rolling for Fabian Coulthard.
23:59At the ITM 400 Auckland, we're off to a great start.
24:01We've got a super busy day ahead of us.
24:03Two 100-kilometre races to come.
24:06And as I mentioned, another top ten shootout to roll out to.
24:08Stay with us on 7 Sport.
24:10Well, this little session should be something else.
24:22A top ten shootout to determine pole position.
24:26The first five rows of the grid for race six this afternoon.
24:29Remember, we've already settled race seven with Fabian Coulthard to start on pole.
24:33And the first man out in the top ten shootout will be Scott McLaughlin.
24:38He'll get an almighty cheer as he comes up along the main straightaway.
24:41The 19-year-old Kiwi, last year's Dunlop Development Series champion.
24:45Also the reigning New Zealand Super Tourer champion.
24:49He's made an enormous impact in his rookie year in the sport.
24:52And he heads out on this solo flying lap.
24:58Beautiful entry on to start-finish straight.
25:01He had a maximum attack, but he didn't step off into the dirt.
25:05Likewise, he's got it aggressively through one and two.
25:08So it's a great start to the lap as he comes up to the first timing intermediate.
25:11He's picked the throttle up very early in second gear.
25:14He achieved a 63.1 to buy a spot into this shootout.
25:18He had a little bit of oversteer on the exit of turn number four.
25:27Gee, he just got it stopped there now.
25:31Rear wheels were locked.
25:33You can hear the tyres complaining as he was trying to pull it up for turn five.
25:42He's looking for a sector time of about a 45.
25:44That's the best sector times that we've got of the lot at the moment.
25:4945.9.
25:56Had a bit of a slip in the middle of the corner there.
25:58It just slid on him and he had to hesitate with the throttle.
26:01So the first lap for him is not bad.
26:04It's a one minute 3.2.
26:06What a bad job.
26:08Especially with the tyres that he had.
26:09So he did a 103.15 to get in there.
26:13Richard Holway looks pretty good.
26:16It was pretty good.
26:21It was a very good job.
26:22It's not often in a shootout that you can actually reproduce the time that you achieved to get in there in qualifying.
26:29Because in qualifying you have the repeat effect on your side.
26:32You can keep on doing it until you achieve it.
26:34In the shootout it's effectively a standing start and a leap over the high jump.
26:38Very true.
26:40So Garth Tander now.
26:43He's been part of every championship race that the V8s have done at this circuit.
26:48In fact he's the only man in the field, in the current field, to have a pole and at least one win next to his name.
26:55One pole position in 2006 for GT.
26:57And two wins amongst all those numbers.
27:01Plus a three-time Backhurst champion of course and the 2007 series winner.
27:06And with the cloud of a penalty over him.
27:08Because he went past the chequered flag twice yesterday in a practice session.
27:12Wherever he lands in this shootout it's plus two.
27:16So bear that in mind.
27:17So if he ends up with pole he'll be third.
27:20And so for all the way out of 10th place whatever happens to him it'll be plus two.
27:24In terms of tyre quality he's got brand new rears and scrubbed fronts to start this lap.
27:29So McLaughlin on four scrub tyres.
27:32Tander with fresh tyres on the rear only.
27:36That gear change second to third for them as you heard then in the background.
27:40It's quite tricky because they're not fully out of the corner.
27:43And they've got a bit of wheel spin and a little bit of slide on when they've actually got to search for the gear.
27:47Locking the rears violently into turn five.
27:50And he only just got it stopped.
27:52He's very aggressive and a very good breaker, Garth Tander.
27:56He knows how to get the car in deep.
27:58A lot of speed in that in these big heavy cars.
28:02Just inside front wheel locking just slightly.
28:05He just heard the tyre squeal as he turned it to the right.
28:09Slightly down on McLaughlin at this point.
28:11But he's very good in this last sector.
28:13Just a little bit too much understeer on the way into the final corner.
28:20See what this does for him.
28:243-3-9.
28:26So Tander won't be happy with that.
28:28But that may actually put McLaughlin's lap time into perspective.
28:31That was a very good job.
28:34Scott Sinclair is engineer.
28:36There's James Courtney to his left.
28:38Here's the replay at one.
28:40Slide, catch, slide, catch.
28:41And then you've got to brake and change the car's direction.
28:46Uses a lot of the kerb at both two and three.
28:49And that sawtooth kerbing on the right there really rattles the car.
28:52And here's the final corner.
28:53A bit of push in the middle.
28:54Front not responding as Garth would want.
28:56And then just bringing up a little bit of dust on the edge on the way out.
29:00Now here's our next runner, David Reynolds.
29:03The third of them, he qualified in a 63.12.
29:08He will pass the 100 championship race mark at the end of this weekend,
29:13Davey Reynolds.
29:13But he won't be thinking about that right now.
29:15He's thinking about this awesome 2.9 kilometre circuit.
29:18He's had to really fight his way back through this car.
29:21You remember the severe damage that was done at Tasmania.
29:24The whole front end.
29:26Had to be pieced back together for almost 80 grand's worth.
29:30And Davey's two-tenths of a second outside at the first sector.
29:35He was on four green tyres, Dave Reynolds.
29:37So that first sector may not really be indicative yet
29:40because the tyre will get better as this lap goes on.
29:44A lot of kerb there for Reynolds.
29:46Uses the braking area of five to run into six.
29:49He sacrificed turn six entry totally to keep the car speed up
29:54and keep the rolling spook that Neil spoke about before
29:56in the proper qualifying session.
29:58Let's have a look at his second sector.
30:00As I said, the tyre will get better.
30:02Still slightly down.
30:03Again, this may make McLaughlin's lap look good.
30:11Ninth in the championship last year.
30:14The Bottolo Ford driver crosses the line
30:16with a 1.03.7.
30:19So you're right.
30:21It's all getting into perspective for the youngster.
30:24And you're at Bottolo Racing.
30:25That's Rod Nash on the left.
30:27This kerb, he's caught a lot more of the top of the dome of that kerb.
30:35That's 600 mil.
30:37By the time you get to the top section of that,
30:40you've used all of the flatter section
30:42and then the dome piece that's more aggressive.
30:45So he used it pretty hard.
30:46This is the kerb that he used a lot of at five.
30:48You can see him still running wide
30:50and sacrifices the entry for six.
30:54Might have been a little bit too aggressive compared.
30:55We made the remark about the way
30:57that Win Cup attacked it earlier in qualifying.
30:59It looked about the right balance.
31:01And I think that amount of kerbing at two
31:02hurts the car too much.
31:04Tanda didn't use it.
31:05So now one of the local favourites has his crack.
31:0823 years of age.
31:09Shane Van Gisbergen, VIP Pet Foods Commodore,
31:12out of Techno Autosports.
31:15Started his year with two pole positions at Adelaide
31:17and a race win.
31:20And he's on four scrub tyres, Matt.
31:21The same tyre strategy as McLaughlin.
31:24So everybody using this strategic game of tyre usage
31:29and what that does for you in terms of yield
31:31and that's a very good first sector.
31:32That's the closest to McLaughlin, 0.07.
31:35It's about one of half a dozen drivers
31:37that achieved all but the same time in qualifying.
31:3963.1.
31:42A lot of pitch in that car as it heels forward under brakes
31:45and you get to hear it scuffing the front wing on the ground.
31:48And a lot more of what was a proper classic line for six.
31:53So he used five kerb but he held it tight.
31:56There's McLaughlin and Richard Holway looking on.
32:02Still very close.
32:05Look at this bump.
32:07One of the best bits in world motorsport.
32:09That left to right.
32:10Big slide on the way into the final corner.
32:11A little bit too wide on the exit.
32:15This will be super close.
32:17103.3.1.
32:20Even Scotty McLaughlin said through that lap,
32:22that is fast.
32:23He looked at his Kiwi mate and said,
32:26this is going to be close.
32:27Well, it was.
32:27But McLaughlin stays at the top of this list.
32:31Four down.
32:32Van Gisbergen second.
32:33Garth Tander is third.
32:35Davey Reynolds in fourth spot.
32:37What a day of action.
32:40So six more to come in the top ten shootout for race six.
32:47Back at Pukakoe Park Raceway.
32:49As qualifying continues here.
32:52This is the top ten shootout for race six.
32:54Hope you're enjoying it.
32:55Because it's off to a flyer.
32:56Leading the list is Scott McLaughlin.
32:59After four drivers have done their flying laps.
33:02Craig Lowndes in search of his first ever victory at this circuit.
33:06He's had pole before back in 2005.
33:09Let's see what Lowndes he's got.
33:10And he's got four green tyres on.
33:12So Lowndes being very aggressive with tyre policy.
33:15We saw him in qualifying right out there in the grass.
33:18We've seen the vision through turn one through the weekend.
33:21He's had some massive moments.
33:23And he uses a lot more curb at turn two than anybody else.
33:27Well, in reality, he's lucky he's even got a car sliding a lot at turn four
33:30because it could have gone very wrong for him on the top of the hill
33:33in that qualifying session.
33:34And so it's a river start for Lowndes.
33:36As you can see at the bottom left-hand corner of your screen.
33:39We've got a reading now.
33:40Very shortly.
33:41Jim's lying at the front.
33:42It's a lot of the inside front tyre.
33:44He cannot stop it.
33:45He's in the grass.
33:46Lap ruined.
33:47He's got to stop it here.
33:49Oh.
33:49Oh.
33:50Come on, mate.
33:51I don't have to bite enough enough.
33:52Carry on.
33:53Look up for that tyre.
33:55Yeah, because he still needs to achieve a tyre.
33:56Because someone else can do the same thing
33:58and you can still put yourself in front of the other driver.
34:01He'll be cranky.
34:02Grabbed the brake aggressively in the braking area at turn five
34:05and instantly locked the unloaded front on the driver's side
34:09and carried it pretty much the whole way off into the grass.
34:12Hopefully, and I doubt it, it won't have a flat spot,
34:15but I suspect it's going to have a pretty big mark on it.
34:19Certainly will.
34:20Lowndes will be very, very cranky with himself.
34:23Really, throughout all the practice sessions
34:26and other qualifying sessions that we've had leading up to this point,
34:30he's the first bloke to go onto the grass at this area,
34:33to go that deep.
34:35Just illustrates there on that real-time replay
34:38of how much pace the cars have got
34:40if you can't stop them in the normal spot.
34:41You can see the reaction there for Jeremy and Adrian.
34:50Scotty McLaughlin's going,
34:51Go, Lounsie.
34:52Stay out of that grass.
34:52A positive out of everything.
34:56So that leaves Scott McLaughlin, of course,
34:58out of the top of the list.
34:59So it's now McLaughlin, Van Gisburgh and Tander.
35:02Remember, we'll have a two-position penalty
35:05at the end of this session.
35:07Then Reynolds, Lowndes, and we unleash
35:09Jason Bright, Team BOC out of Bradley Jones Racing,
35:12comes off a race win at Tasmania.
35:15Boy, are these guys on song.
35:18And Jason Bright was fifth before with a 3.08.
35:20He has the speed and the potential to knock McLaughlin off.
35:23He's on four green tyres.
35:25So aggressive policy again for him and just slightly up on Scott at the first sector.
35:31Very, very good exit through.
35:32Yeah, pick the throttle up very early.
35:34And progressively, the car didn't slide.
35:36It didn't wheel spin.
35:37It's given it a great launch onto the back straight.
35:40Very stable under brakes, just like Wincup did in qualifying.
35:44He carries the flow of the speed of the car across the exit of turn five.
35:49Sacrifices a little bit of the entry to six.
35:52Doesn't use the classic wider entry.
35:55Looks like a good lap so far for Bright.
35:59Yep, this is going to be okay.
36:00This is two tenths up.
36:01Very nice, smooth lap for Jason Bright.
36:07This may just get into the twos.
36:10Well, it is clearly the cleanest lap we've seen in the top ten shootout.
36:14And it certainly is the fastest.
36:16103.0.
36:18P1, mate.
36:19P1.
36:19Good work, Ian.
36:20Yeah!
36:21Around the right and left corner, I've got a bit of push.
36:23It's like the time is never going to end.
36:24But Team BIC, but he's complaining of push.
36:26This was a great start to the lap right here.
36:35Didn't actually hit the crown of the kerb.
36:37Used all of the apron and the fascia of it.
36:39Got it landed.
36:40Changed the direction nicely through three and four.
36:43And importantly for me, the entry under the back straight was clean and smooth.
36:47No wheel spin.
36:48And immediately saw the green yield on the little timing box on your screen.
36:52So here goes Alex Premar.
36:54After his teammate was just knocked off the top spot by Bright, the Frenchman heads out.
37:02You can see that little bit of yellow tape at the top of the steering wheel.
37:05Green box for Alex.
37:07Great start for the Frenchman.
37:08And that's a feature of some of the steering wheels.
37:10It gives the driver a reference of where the front wheels are pointed at any point during the turn.
37:15So you can just see it there.
37:17Gives you an idea of the wheel work.
37:19And helps him get a visual reference on what's going on in the cabin.
37:22Four green tyres for Alex Premar.
37:24Very good start to this lap.
37:25Used a massive amount of curve at turn five.
37:28And he's had some trouble here through the weekend.
37:30But he gets it done this time.
37:32Turns it in nicely.
37:33This has been a very good lap so far.
37:36Just slightly outside.
37:37Almost exactly the same time as Scott McLaughlin outside the Bright second sector.
37:42He's best qualifier since joining the V8 Supercar Series was on the streets of Sydney and almost ended up into the fence.
37:50What a wicked way to finish a lap.
37:53But he held onto it.
37:53That's the closest all weekend.
37:56That was going in the inside fence.
37:58Folks, if you'd been in the commentary box, Scaife went beneath the desk.
38:02Oh, that was big time.
38:03And he was 400 metres from us.
38:05Wow.
38:05So, Jason Bright, 103.0, leads the way.
38:11Alex Premar.
38:12My goodness.
38:14He has gone wild.
38:16So, we're down to the final three in the top ten shootout for race six.
38:26You can see it.
38:27Mark Winterbottom is on maximum attack in the FPR Pepsi Max Ford Falcon.
38:33Our leader is Jason Bright, holding down provisional pole with a 103.04 and three one hundredths is Frosty's benchmark uptime after the first sector.
38:43And four green tyres for Mark Winterbottom also.
38:49Gets it stopped nicely.
38:51Uses a lot of the kerb.
38:53Is able to keep it to the right so that he gets a better line through six.
38:59Slightly down at this point to see what it's going to be like after he gets out of the hair pit for the next sector time.
39:05That little short shoot between turns seven and eight.
39:07The cars amazingly get back to between 170 and 180 kilometres an hour.
39:11When we last came here in 2007, Frosty had pole position.
39:16Only one pole was decided on that weekend.
39:20So, six years apart.
39:21This is so close.
39:22He could well go back to back if you like.
39:25And he has at the moment a 103.01.
39:28Mate, well done.
39:29He won at the moment.
39:30That's a very good lap.
39:31Very good lap.
39:34I had a horrible pedal.
39:36Really bad knock-off.
39:38And that stopped me from going down to third five and jumping on the brakes, mate.
39:43Just off those kerbs.
39:44So, that discussion that Mark Winterbottom's having there is saying how bad the brake pedal was.
39:50And this is a weird circuit because the kerbs have got grooves in them.
39:54They're called a Vallelunga kerb.
39:56It means that when the wheel gets on it, it tends to give the car more pad knock-off.
40:00There's two or three spots where it happens badly.
40:02On the exit of turn four is one of the worst.
40:05So, he's been affected by that.
40:06It shakes the brake pads back into the brake caliper.
40:09And then the effect is, and here's the kerb that Mark just spoke about.
40:12And if you're in the car, the vibration is extreme right through the entire chassis.
40:15And again, on the exit of turn four, Vallelunga kerbing there.
40:19So, when you go for the brakes up at turn five, the front brakes aren't nearly as effective as they should be
40:25because the little pistons in the caliper are squeezing the front pads onto the rotor.
40:28And it's got a long way to go.
40:30But the brakes at the rear come on strong.
40:32So, what happens is it wants to rotate you and therefore you brake less aggressively.
40:36It's quite spooky.
40:38So, remember, because of the unique way that this day unfolds,
40:44Fabian Coulthard already has pole position locked in for race seven.
40:48Now he's trying to get another one for race six.
40:50Three one-hundredths the difference.
40:52And four green tyres for Fabian Coulthard.
40:54Very aggressive run through two, three, four.
40:57But he's right in touch with the time that he needed to achieve there.
41:00He picked up third gear very early out of turn four.
41:03Runs wide on the exit of five, which seems to be the habit now for a number of these fast front runners.
41:12And they just sacrifice the entry into six.
41:15Slightly up.
41:16Slightly up at this point.
41:19Used a bit too much of the exit there, but he's slightly up.
41:21This will be very interesting at the last two corners.
41:23It's James Small up in the top right-hand corner of screen engineer for Mark Winterbottom.
41:30They're riding him home at Bradley Jones Racing.
41:34Fabian Coulthard.
41:35Can he do a clean sweep today?
41:37Yes.
41:37And goes inside the 103s.
41:40That's awesome, mate.
41:42P1.
41:42That's Phil Keaty's engineer.
41:44P1 is the confirmation.
41:4662.8.
41:47Mate, just one to go.
41:49So we'll just watch for the scales on entry.
41:52Great lap.
41:53There's a great lap in a shootout.
41:55This was very aggressive down here at one.
41:57It had a big slide, too.
41:58Look at the opposite lock.
41:59And he's on that sawtooth curbing there.
42:01That is a high-speed slide.
42:03Beautiful control.
42:05Very nice.
42:06Very nice.
42:08A couple of bites at it, but still held position.
42:10Gave himself the widest entry point into two.
42:13And then kept the rolling speed up.
42:15Fired a straight line straight through here.
42:16Look at that.
42:17Probably the best part of a metre across that curbing.
42:21And the right-hand wheels are typically where the left wheels should be.
42:25It's a great lap.
42:26Well done.
42:27So this is the job now for Jamie Winkup.
42:29He's pretty much done it all, but he's yet to get a pole position or a race win at this circuit.
42:35His best qualifier at Kuka Koei, back in 07, was fifth.
42:39He's the last man out.
42:41And you saw how hard Coulthard had to push.
42:45As the car number one, the Red Bull Racing Commodore, gets all crossed up as it kicked off the curves.
42:51Wow, good save.
42:52And he's still a tenth up.
42:53That is an unbelievable save.
42:55He was almost off the road of turn threes on four green tyres and the fastest first sector.
43:00That was very brave into one.
43:02His downshift to fifth was so late.
43:04He carried so much speed in that first corner.
43:06It was phenomenal.
43:08He is, when he's at his best, he is incredibly good to watch in high-flying mode.
43:14He uses every little bit of road.
43:16And this car is totally maxed out.
43:19That is as fast as you can drive that Red Bull Commodore.
43:21He's up there now.
43:24Watch him in these last two corners.
43:26This is where he's best.
43:30Man, that's aggressive.
43:31That is so fast.
43:35Winkup to close it out.
43:37He crosses the line and gets his 40th career pole position.
43:42P2, P2 Winkup was a 1-8-2-7-6.
43:47Relation.
43:48It was a beautiful lap.
43:50Nice work, brother.
43:51Nice work.
43:52All you.
43:54That's his second at 2013.
43:55Great work, fellas.
43:57Happy to make up for the last one, thanks.
43:59That was a very good effort.
44:01That was, Mark's description was 100% accurate.
44:04That car had nothing left in it.
44:05That was maximum attack.
44:07And the run through turns 1, 2, 3, 4 was extraordinary.
44:12Look at the way the rear gets away from him on the turn into 2.
44:15So he's nowhere near that line that we saw Fabian take
44:18where he straight-lined the top of the kerb.
44:20It's sliding.
44:21That makes your entry through 3 much harder to achieve.
44:24So hard that he's ended up in the dirt.
44:27For a split second here, I thought this lap was game over.
44:30I reckon he probably did too.
44:32And yet he pops out just two corners later,
44:35a tenth of a second up.
44:37And watch him gather it here.
44:39Look at the steering.
44:40Look at the correction.
44:41Watch the wheel.
44:42And then when he makes it land, he gathers it, Neil.
44:45Look, this is a really good bit of driving.
44:47And even at the apex of 3,
44:49the whole time Jamie's eyes were fixed on the apex of 4.
44:52He never shifted his gaze.
44:54And here it is from on board.
44:59That's very optimistic
45:01because all he was looking for was the apex of 4.
45:03He made an ugly exit into a beautiful entry.
45:06He was transfixed on that hit point down at turn 4.
45:10That was really, really good stuff.
45:12Great.
45:12How tight is it at the top?
45:13And the Holden's on the front row of the grid there.
45:15So remember, this is the top 10 for race 6.
45:18The first race we'll have this afternoon.
45:2035 lap.
45:21Mark Winterbottom leading the way for the forwards.
45:23Scotty McLaughlin and Shane Van Gisbergen
45:25to start 5th and 6th.
45:27And Craig Lowndes there in 10th position.
45:37I enjoyed that, guys.
45:38Here's Shane Van Gisbergen in replay.
45:39We'll have a look at these super slow-mos.
45:41This is the turn 2 curbing
45:43that's making the cars just fly.
45:46Lots of different approaches here, MS.
45:48And there's two ways of doing it.
45:49You can see the really aggressive way
45:51of Fabian Coultharder used all of the kerb
45:53and it stood on two wheels,
45:54which holds the car tight.
45:56Same with Lowndes.
45:57So basically got the loaded wheels
45:59on the bottom of the kerb,
46:00which is what Neil said before.
46:01Or there's the way that Winkup ran through there,
46:05which didn't actually upset it as much
46:07and runs through a bit flatter, doesn't it?
46:09The interesting one for me was Fabian
46:11because he turned it much earlier
46:12because he got through one so well
46:14and he flew the light side of the car
46:16in a straight line, straight through there.
46:18And he got away with it.
46:21But very interesting contest
46:22between these two men at the moment.
46:23Really shaping up was a ripper battle
46:25between Fabian and Jamie.
46:26And you could see the commitment from Winkup
46:29and the relief when he achieved that lap
46:30that he knew he dug very deep for that.
46:33You watch the way he gets at the corner here.
46:35Yeah, he's focused hard on this Apex at two.
46:39Car's actually sliding now ever so gently.
46:41There's the back getting away.
46:43Bit of opposite lock, just holding it.
46:47Left side of the car's on the fascia of the kerb.
46:50But it carried that much speed.
46:52The onboard, I thought, was quite telling
46:53because it didn't really wipe any pace off.
46:56OK, we brought a bit of gravel up,
46:58but it didn't really harm him at all.
47:02And right about there, he'd be thinking,
47:03oops, I think I was just a little bit too quick.
47:11And we just had a flash on the timing monitor
47:16that car 14 is under investigation
47:18for exceeding the circuit limits in that shootout.
47:21So Fabian Coulthard under investigation.
47:24And a reminder, too, that the results board that we saw
47:28had Garth Tander in eighth spot.
47:31We know that he's going to drop two, so Garth will start from 10.
47:34You know what that'll be?
47:34That'll be Fabian being very aggressive at two
47:37because with the left side of the car flying
47:39and the right side of the car to the left of the white line,
47:43that's off the racetrack.
47:44That's what that'll be about.
47:45And it's so intense down in pit lane at the moment
47:47that every team's looking at every other team.
47:49It will have been raised.
47:51What a great reaction.
47:53That was as good, if not the best lap I've ever seen him do
47:56in terms of level of commitment.
47:58There was not a skerrick of time left in that car, Neil.
48:02No, he was standing on its throat, wasn't he?
48:05And you can see his elation.
48:07He knows how much he contributed to that lap.
48:09When you said about going and doing that driver stuff,
48:11that's driver stuff.
48:12Yeah.
48:13You can't engineer that into a setting.
48:15That's between the ears.
48:17Well, Jamie Wincup, just back in the garage.
48:20Jamie, we can tell how pumped you are after that pole position.
48:23Well done.
48:24That was commitment.
48:25Yeah, it's one of the better laps I've done
48:27in obviously a very, very good car.
48:29So I was a bit livid after Q2
48:33where I didn't get the most out of the car.
48:35So I should have been a little bit further up,
48:37but who cares?
48:38An opportunity to make up for it in the shootout there
48:40and used a little bit of the track plus a little bit more
48:43and, yeah, very, very happy to be on pole.
48:46Fantastic.
48:46That moment you gave us a bit of a heart stop there early on,
48:49we thought you might have been in a bit of trouble,
48:50but you actually came through that sector fastest.
48:53Yeah.
48:54I was all committed on the way in
48:57and probably a little too committed
48:59and used a bit too much road.
49:00But thankfully it didn't cost me too much time
49:03and I was still able to get out onto that long back straight
49:05nice and quick.
49:06So as I say, it's one of the better laps I've done,
49:09so I couldn't be happier.
49:10So that sector one turned out to be pretty important.
49:12Yeah, I haven't seen all the split.
49:14You know more information than I do right now,
49:15but I knew I was on for about a, you know,
49:18a seven, seven, eight, you know,
49:21or two eights or I should say.
49:23And then I thought, oh, I lacked a little bit in the second,
49:25but I need to come home strong in the last.
49:28It's great when you get angry, Jamie.
49:29Yeah, yeah.
49:31Sometimes it goes pear-shaped,
49:33sometimes it works for the better,
49:34and I'd say it worked for the better.
49:36Well done, mate.
49:36Thanks, mate.
49:37Cheers.
49:38So a good day so far for Jamie Winkup.
49:41He made amends for what he said wasn't a pretty qualifying for race seven.
49:44He'll start that race later this afternoon in third,
49:48but he will start race six from pole position.
49:51Inquiries underway to this car.
49:53We'll bring you up to speed when we come back.
49:54So for the second time this season,
50:04Jamie Winkup, last year's V8 supercar champion,
50:07will collect the Armourall pole position award winner's check.
50:11He had pole on the first day at Simmons Plains
50:14in Tasmania last weekend,
50:16and this is an important one too.
50:18The 40th of his career puts him outright third all time
50:21ahead of Alan Moffat.
50:23So let's check out the starting grid for race six.
50:28Garth Tander there in eighth position,
50:30so that penalty hasn't been adjusted yet.
50:32He will start from position 10,
50:34and there is still a question mark over car 14 of Fabian Coulthard.
50:38We'll tidy that up for you as soon as we get it.
50:40This is the midfield pack.
50:42Rick Kelly, the leading Nissan in 15th,
50:45and Lee Holdsworth really struggling down there in 21st.
50:47Murrow Engel and Tim Slade, the other E63 AMG Mercedes-Benz.
50:52But what about GRM?
50:53They're happy boys down there, which is where we find Larka.
50:57Down here with both the Gary Rogers motorsport drivers,
50:59Alex Pema and Scotty McLaughlin.
51:01Great job.
51:01Fifth and seventh.
51:02Scotty, first of all, you did that on used tyres.
51:04That's going to put you in really good shape for the race, isn't it?
51:06Yeah, for sure, mate.
51:07It's good for us.
51:08Our 33 team has saved a set of greens,
51:10so hopefully we can go out there and have a bit of fun
51:12and see where we end up.
51:13Good job, mate.
51:14Alex, really impressed the way you're going this year, mate,
51:16and in the top ten again.
51:17But tell us about coming onto the straight, mate.
51:19We all took a big, deep breath there.
51:21We're looking at the vision now.
51:22Talk us through it.
51:22Yeah, definitely.
51:23It was amazing in the car because I just get a slide
51:26from the exit of the last corner,
51:28so it was really tight, definitely.
51:29I think it would have been, yeah, maybe two, three times quicker,
51:32so P3, P4.
51:33But unfortunately, I get this slide,
51:35and, yeah, it just cost me a lot of time.
51:36But, yeah, it was a really big moment in the car.
51:39I said, ooh, ooh, ooh.
51:40And then back on the straight, but it was good.
51:43I like that you entertain us.
51:44Hey, Scotty, in other sports, this is a very mechanical sport,
51:47we know you can drag it a little bit out from the human effort.
51:50Home crowd, can you dig deeper?
51:52Is there a little bit left here?
51:53Yeah, it's awesome.
51:54You know, you come over to the shootout,
51:55and they're cheering for you,
51:57and you see when you're warming up your tyres,
51:58they're clapping, and it's like, whoa, this is awesome.
52:01And it's something you dream about, mate,
52:02and I think it definitely picked you up,
52:04and I can see why Murph won three in a row back in the day.
52:08Alex can't wait till we race in France, eh?
52:10Yeah, definitely.
52:10But the travel will be quite long, yeah,
52:12especially for the Kiwi guys or the Australian guys.
52:15Cheers, boys.
52:15Thanks.
52:16I think we could handle the travel, Scafie.
52:17You could engineer a race around the French Riviera, couldn't you?
52:19No problem.
52:20So remember, this is under investigation,
52:24and possibly a penalty pending here for Fabian Coulthard.
52:27Yeah, so somebody will have picked up the fact that Fabian,
52:31if you notice, right at the apex of the corner,
52:33the right-hand side of the car was to the left of the white line,
52:38which means it's outside the track limits.
52:40So it's a nitpick, but it does look damning,
52:43so that'll be one that they look at carefully in race control,
52:46and somebody will have immediately fired a note through having seen that.
52:51As I said before,
52:52it's pretty intense down there in the pit lane at the moment.
52:54So who will claim the first victory at this new-look circuit?
52:58Big crowd on hand.
52:59And can Ford get its first win of the year,
53:02or will the Kiwis keep that winning run going?
53:05And locals see a very popular local winner here at Pukekohe Park Raceway.
53:10So race six of the series, 35 laps, 100 kilometres heading our way.
53:14New South Wales viewers, switch over to 7.2.
53:17Now Queensland viewers, head to 7 as we go racing
53:20in the V8 Supercar Championship.
