00:00:00We're back in beautiful Canberra and the intensity continues with the major race
00:00:05of the weekend. Coming up race three of the GMC 400 and the pace car will be out
00:00:11very shortly. The Ford safety car, Walker, safety car. Will it be the only time
00:00:18that Ford finishes ahead of the field this weekend? Because we've had two
00:00:22Holdens wins so far but a lot of points on offer now. Mark Oster and Greg Rust.
00:00:26Thanks Billy. As we get set to go racing in the big one a 50 lap up with two pit stops.
00:00:32Steven Richards on pole alongside Neil Crompton, Greg Murphy and Jason Bargwana on
00:00:38row two. Sigmundscape on row three. Todd Kelly and Dougal McDougal on row four.
00:00:42Just a reminder if you've just joined us those good positions are determined by
00:00:45their results in the first two 25 lap races. Craig Lowndes started out at ten.
00:00:50Larry Perkins, Paul Will Radisic, Johnson, Trevor Ashby and Mark Larkham in 16.
00:00:55Position 17 is Brad Jones, 18 Tony Longhurst, 19 and 20 Garth Tander and
00:01:00Anthony Tratt. Row 11, Rodney Forbes and Russell Ingle. Then it's Steve Reid and
00:01:03John Faulkner who's a non-starter in this one just withdrawn because of that crash in
00:01:07race two. Yes amazing stories up and down that grid isn't there. John Bauer back in
00:01:1125th. Paul Morris had a big lose in race two fortunately he'll take the grid for the
00:01:15final. 50 laps double points so 120 Shell Championship points on offer for whoever wins
00:01:21this race. This is a very important race. There's who's out. Craig Baird went out yesterday
00:01:29and a big collision. John Bauer, John Faulkner of course coming to grief at Queen Victoria
00:01:33Terrace earlier on today. But there is the front row of the grid. Neil Crofton representing
00:01:41Ford in the FTR Falcon. Stephen Richards alongside. They've been very consistent. Consistently highly
00:01:48placed in those two 25 lap races. That's why they've earned the right to start from the
00:01:52front. Can they take advantage of it this afternoon?
00:01:5430 cars set to do battle. The conclusion. A stunning climax to the street race and the
00:02:01street fight that they call the GMC 400. Who will get the jump? Will it be Crompton or will
00:02:06it be Stephen Richards in the Kmart?
00:02:07Kmart Corbador. Richards away very smartly. Crofton tucks in the second. Look at Marguana. He's got the edge over Murphy as they run towards turn one for the first time. Stephen Richards.
00:02:17Do you see Paul Morris standing outside there? God, this is where it all gets a bit on the tricky side, isn't it? The first tight corner.
00:02:26Very, very tight through turn one. But fortunately this field have had a few attempts at it now. They know how it works. They know they've got a funnel through there and they've got a long way to go.
00:02:33So a nice clean start to the all-important third race here at the GMC 400. Double points on offer. And there's your Ford Limit race analysis.
00:02:4230 starters making the grid. 50 laps just under 200 kilometers in distance. They have to make compulsory stops for both fuel and tires. And both of those have to be completed between laps two and lap 36.
00:02:53Look at Lowndes trying to have a look at Dougal McDougal. They sweep up Kings Avenue. Now to State Circle. Nowhere in the world do you see anything like this. They run here between the old and the new Parliament House. It doesn't happen with NASCARs around the White House and it doesn't happen with Formula One cars around the House of Lords. But here the V8s are storming around the nation's capital in between. Our Parliament House and Dougal McDougal goes on. And that has allowed Lowndes to come through.
00:03:21Lundering down Flynn Drive for the first of 50 times. Neil Crofton leads the pack. Just behind Stephen Richards. You've got a great start off the grid. Nick Field filing through that very tight turn 12.
00:03:34Hammering up through the gears once again down Flynn Place. Blitching 180 kilometers an hour on the approach to turn 13.
00:03:39It's going to be really interesting in the latter stages of the race. A lot of people had trouble with the left-hand front tires wearing right the way through. So when it gets sort of 20 laps or so you can see a lot of problems.
00:03:53There's an indication of who's been doing the business on the streets of Canberra. Richards 99 points. Crofton 87 points. Murphy 84. Barguana Kelly and McDougal in there too. Great effort from Dougal McDougal. The third of the Perkins prepared Commodores.
00:04:06But really has been a battle of survival. We've got a long way to go yet before this one's over.
00:04:10Up into turn one once again. A great crowd here. You can see them to the right-hand side there. There is Stephen Richards. He's got a handy gap already on Neil Crompton. Just over two seconds. Third place. Jason Barguana.
00:04:23As they sweep through here. Murphy tucked in behind Barguana. And then it's Glenn Seton, Mark Skate, Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly, Larry Perkins and McDougal has fought back to retain 10th place.
00:04:34You have to say Richards' car looks really nicely set up. You see it coming through the chicane there. It's really nice and steady by comparison, for example, to Seton's car.
00:04:44I just wonder if the Kmart team are taking an each-way bet. That's the advantage of having two cars. You can start the race on a full tank of fuel. 120 litres of fuel.
00:04:52Oh, again.
00:04:53And probably have to come in for a splash and dash late in the race. Or you can start with a lighter fuel. That means you've got to take on more fuel later on.
00:04:58But it's a real gamble, particularly how the safety car periods work. They couldn't work in your favour or they could work against you.
00:05:05But look at the speed that Stephen Richards is showing here. He may well be on a light fuel.
00:05:08You talk there, Mark, about the different kinds of strategies in between races two and three.
00:05:12You spend a bit of time talking to the different teams and the different drivers about their approach to this third one.
00:05:17There is just so many different options that can take into this race. Incredible.
00:05:21It's going to be fascinating to watch it unfold.
00:05:23There's going to be so many different strategies at work here.
00:05:25And we're only going to see them come to life when that pit window opens.
00:05:30It's open now.
00:05:32Between lap two and lap 36.
00:05:36There's also a question, too, about going in for your tyre stop very early.
00:05:40He saw Seton get caught out by that in the Adelaide 500 when he made a tyre stop very early.
00:05:44And when he was under attack from Lowndes late in the race, he had no rubber left.
00:05:47So a lot of these teams have wanted me, I would think, leaving their tyre change to about half-race distance
00:05:51to make sure they've got plenty of grip in case there's a late race challenge.
00:05:54Big question mark going into this race as well over brakes.
00:05:58This place is a little tough on brakes.
00:06:00So Larcombe's in. Here we go. Pit stop central happening here.
00:06:03Brad Jones filing in as well. So too John Bowen.

00:06:11Now in the bottom of your screen there, the walker pit stop camera shows you the stop for Larcombe.
00:06:16Yep. Larcombe's thing's leaking water.
00:06:20She's boiling, I would say.

00:06:24Now that is rotten luck for the Queenslander, who was doing so well during the course of qualifying here on Friday.
00:06:30Was the fastest on Friday heading out into the top 15 shootout.
00:06:34So McLean doing tyres.
00:06:36Yep, going for rubber very early on.

00:06:42So Bowen's done very well in that stop.
00:06:44McLean now rejoins the circuit.
00:06:46So it's interesting.
00:06:46Some teams going for tyre very, very early in the race.
00:06:49Once they've made their mandatory stop for tyres, if there's a yellow flag, then they can come in and change again if they want to.
00:07:02The Queen Victoria Terrace part.
00:07:03Now there's the bonnet coming back down again on the Mitre 10 forward.
00:07:07Let's go to Grant Denya.
00:07:08Well the word down here at the pits is that he's losing water.
00:07:11They don't know what's caused it.
00:07:12Possibly a hole in the radio.
00:07:13They're not too sure.
00:07:14But they've put the bonnet down.
00:07:15They've topped it up now.
00:07:15They're changing tyres and they'll dump him and send him back out.
00:07:18But how sensational is it to be here?
00:07:20The first thing they all went past.
00:07:21It was like a dust storm down here on the start straight with so many leaves around.
00:07:25It was quite incredible.
00:07:26Yeah, there's been a lot of comment from the teams about those leaves blowing around, getting caught in the cool induction.
00:07:31Well the air scoops at the front of the car which cooled the brakes in the engine.
00:07:35Some of the teams have been putting wire screens and things across there now because they're saying that particularly it's been affecting brake temperatures.
00:07:41The leaves building up inside the brake ducts.
00:07:43So a lot of engineering going on between races to cope with the autumn leaves.
00:07:47And it's interesting, Mark, to look at the ingenuity when it comes to things like that as well.
00:07:50Different forms of that wire mesh being applied to try and keep those leaves off.
00:07:54The Kmart team, for example, have come up with a pointed nose approach where they try and brush the leaves away.
00:08:00So yeah, very, very interesting way of trying to keep the leaves from blocking the radiator.

00:08:06Stephen Richards, the 27-year-old who recently became a daddy for the first time.
00:08:10I know his wife Angela is watching at home in Melbourne.
00:08:1240 starts in the Shell Championship Series, one victory.
00:08:16And for those of you that think back to Mount Panorama Bathurst last year, then it was in Wins Colors.
00:08:22And he and teammate Greg Murphy, who sits in fourth place, took victory in the FAI 1000.
00:08:28I reckon your thing, Mark, about Stephen Richards, maybe starting with a lighter fuel load, makes a lot of sense because he seems to be, he's lapping, he's pulled out to nearly three seconds now.
00:08:39And it's strange how all of a sudden it could be that much quicker.
00:08:45He's doing some quick times, isn't he?
00:08:4646.45 last time around.
00:08:48That's actually the fastest lap of the race so far for Stephen Richards in the Kmart machine.
00:08:52So he's flying.
00:08:53We're only guessing at these strategies.
00:08:55We don't know what these teams have come up with.
00:08:57Keep them secret right up until the beginning of the race.
00:09:00And they only reveal as the race unfolds itself.
00:09:02So who will be at the top at the end of this 50 lap race?

00:09:10120 points, a double points race on offer here this afternoon.
00:09:14It's early days in this third race.
00:09:16But y'all, look at this.

00:09:25So there's confirmation of what Barry Sheen was talking about before, I would think.
00:09:29Quickest Stephen Richards on the circuit at the moment.
00:09:31But bear in mind, though, that he doesn't have any traffic to contend with.
00:09:35Out in front and doing a good job at the moment, the 27-year-old.
00:09:39And a tremendous confidence boost as well for the Kmart racing team.
00:09:42Those guys coming off the high of their victory at Bathurst last year.
00:09:46Haven't had a great year and now doing very, very well.
00:09:49That's what I was talking about.
00:09:50And look at the leaves.

00:10:34Yeah, there was an equally, I think, mix-up with the deployment of the safety car.

00:11:04So half the field slowed down.

00:11:06A lot of very unhappy drivers over it, too.

00:12:03it's no wonder the chairman of Ovesco Cochrane wants to get rid of him.

00:12:27guys whose left front tyres were totally knackered at the end of that race and three or four
00:12:31of them wore right through.

00:12:42You heard him say there are no flat spots to that tyre despite the lock-up.
00:12:46But that's amazing.
00:12:47Both of them locking up in the same place.

00:12:50You've got to hand it to Bridgestone where they can make the tyre that will work in the
00:12:54heat of Hidden Valley in Darwin and down here in the Lacafé, 40 degree track temperature
00:12:59and here sort of eight or nine.

00:14:01Unfortunately, I was coming into the roundabout chicane over the back there and Forbes had a
00:14:08spin.
00:14:09He sort of lost it and went into the tyres and went out wide.
00:14:11And I just came around a chicane, went in under him and it's drove me straight into the wall.
00:14:15It's total utter stupidity, basically.
00:14:20You told me yesterday that this was a circuit that you didn't mind driving on.
00:14:22Have you changed your mind now?
00:14:24No, not at all.
00:14:25I still enjoy it.
00:14:26I think it's great.
00:14:27I was having a ball out there, just cruising around.
00:14:29I started last, so I thought, just stay out of trouble and cruise around, do our pit stops
00:14:35when we were supposed to.
00:14:36And we'd work our way up into the top ten by the end.
00:14:38But, you know, when you're racing against people like that, it's pretty hard.
00:14:41I'd like to.
00:14:43It's a tough one, isn't it?
00:14:44I mean, cruise around and stay out of trouble when the competition is so close.

00:17:39of the problems for Garth Tander.
00:17:41Even Cameron McLean at the end of that second race had a complete diff failure.
00:17:44And that is just so uncharacteristic.
00:17:48Now, Lowndes has come in for a quick splash as well.
00:17:50His fuel stop, complete.
00:17:52And he works his way back out of pit lane.
00:17:53Glenn Seaton is in to do the same, and so, by the looks of it, is Larry Perkins.
00:17:56Yeah, that thing with Garth Tander could have been when he hit the wall this morning, couldn't

00:18:01So, Stephen Richards continues to lead, but he hasn't made a pit stop.
00:18:05See, Glenn, look at his speed.
00:18:07Yeah, you've got to be very careful.
00:18:09You can see him looking at his dash, checking his speed to make sure he's under that 60kmh speed
00:18:13limit.
00:18:15If you exceed the speed limit in pit lane, you get a stop-go penalty, and that can be
00:18:18very, very expensive.
00:18:20The driver's really got to keep their cool under very difficult circumstances.
00:18:24He's looking down the list here.
00:18:25I think our winner yesterday, the winner of race one, Greg Murphy, is looking pretty strong
00:18:31right at the moment.
00:18:32He's probably the first of the drivers that have already pitted in the queue.
00:18:36There's a big overlap to happen here, but he's looking in a good position.
00:18:38That will unfold as the race progresses.

00:19:13There was no problems, but it has not been a good weekend for the Catafilla forward team,
00:19:17which is a real shame because he has been showing some good speed.

00:21:32It's blown a seal and it's just pumped all the oil out of the diff.
00:21:34So unfortunately she's all over.

00:24:44He's had a terrible weekend so far,
00:24:46so maybe in the race, the double points race,
00:24:49Engle may be pretty strongly positioned

00:25:22and it makes it hard when you've got to muscle that big forward
00:25:24around these tight and tricky streets of Canberra.

00:25:55he's very well positioned at the moment.
00:25:57He's probably the first of the cars on the track

00:29:18So the HRT cars both have to make their longer stops to come.
