00:00:00brad jones racing and having a real party this weekend at simmons plains jason bright actually
00:00:08made his championship debut at this track way back in 1997 in the grm he was filling in that
00:00:14weekend he finished 10th overall and right now he's got a race victory next to his name the first
00:00:20time that he's sprayed the champagne since uh winter 2011 and as we know fabian coolthard
00:00:26in the sister car won yesterday to kick off a great weekend so that's the scenario coolthard wins
00:00:31race three bright wins race four and one to go with mark winterbottom to start on pole position
00:00:36scapey it's been a really unique weekend it's not over and done with yet well they've had to adapt
00:00:40matt haven't they you know the the 60 60 super sprint yesterday with the half time and the restart
00:00:45dual file restart then those sprint races and what's actually happening a lot of i think the
00:00:49drivers now that we've spoken to so many of them after the first couple of races at this weekend
00:00:54what's actually happening is they've got to live with how they set the car at the start
00:00:58so you can't make those changes when you when you've normally had in our formats a pit stop and a roll
00:01:04center change they've got to drive around the issues and craig lownds he was complaining his rear tires
00:01:09were totally destroyed at the end of that that race four yeah it's all shiny happy and rosy in the
00:01:14garage that we're in and next door but there are more unhappy drivers than happy when you do a tour of
00:01:19pit lane so let's run you through the highlights of race four it was a bjr lockout on the front row
00:01:24bright starting from pole position fabian started second in every race so far and jason was just
00:01:29well and truly in control in fact early on this was probably fabian's only real crack down there at
00:01:36turn four which would prove to be a disaster for david reynolds now caruso clips david wall
00:01:41reynolds actually goes into the wall and quip later it's the first time he's been hit by two walls
00:01:46but i mean the damage to that car is just bizarre they're trying to piece it together
00:01:53to get back for race five it's a race against time and tim edwards just said to me there's about
00:01:58eighty thousand dollars worth of damage there so that was a very good pass courtney opportunistic
00:02:03there were some great battles in this field young scott mclaughlin did a really good job
00:02:07mark winterbottom and mclaughlin had a great battle have a look at this
00:02:11mclaughlin stays down the inside courtney gives winterbottom a hit
00:02:16and they and he gets away with it courtney a good bit of driving have a look at this on board now
00:02:21with james bang into the back of winterbottom backs out of it and he saved winterbottom from spinning
00:02:26but this performance from jason bright was world class it was a very very good drive he has had
00:02:32success at this circuit before but you have to go back to 2006 when he was driving for fbr he even
00:02:37managed to take out the number one signal as he comes back into pit lane so everything's going
00:02:42right and that is the critical aspect isn't it that those guys are really about the only two that are
00:02:47ultra happy with their cars so the championship point score after four races win cup leads remember
00:02:52craig lownds came in here with the championship lead he slipped down to third after that disaster
00:02:57yesterday everybody's talking about scotty mclaughlin he's fifth in the championship he's
00:03:01pulling off moves like we just saw then and he's really lighting it up mark winterbottom moves up two spots
00:03:05into eight so another 100 points on offer for race five when you get to the end of a weekend and the
00:03:11end of today when you are a driver and when you're a team and it's all a bit of a rush job how do you
00:03:16cope with that transition that is hard man i mean one of the things about it now is you've got to
00:03:21regroup you've got a qualifying performance that you've already that you already know so qualifying for
00:03:25race five has already been conducted you know where you've got a lob and you've got to get your brain
00:03:30around take all that stuff that you had before out from race four and get your brain around the start
00:03:34for race five yeah the world is certainly changing in v8 supercars that's the first race since sand
00:03:38down 2011 that an fpr driver or a triple eight driver has not been on the podium that breaks a
00:03:4637 race streak the car of the future is certainly playing its part coming up after the break we'll
00:03:52get larko's proper racing line neil crompton will do a full tour up and down pit lane as we prepare for
00:03:57race five
00:03:58for the last time we saw this car it was hard up against the wall at turn four and then on the back
00:04:26of a truck with bits and pieces hanging all over it now it looks brand new car 55 at david reynolds
00:04:30so perhaps there's a better than even chance that he will take part in race five neil crompton is
00:04:36heading there and will update us very soon but on the way let's check out larko's proper racing line
00:04:42here at simmons plains because it's a tricky circuit this one thanks to penright thanks matty and a
00:04:47little bit to get through so let's blaze into the track facts first okay race five of 36 in the
00:04:51championship a 100 kilometer sprint today no pit stops now arguably if there was a safety car
00:04:58mid race or before and you're in the middle of the pack and you came in and put a set of new tires
00:05:03you might pick up a few positions but debatable tires are soft so it's a sprint race now that's
00:05:08detail let's get into the meaty stuff here is the hairpin turn four at simmons plains we've seen lots
00:05:14of activity there over the weekend lots of overtaking lots of lost opportunity let's review some of the
00:05:18stuff we talked about yesterday now there's two ways to approach this and it's all around how you
00:05:22brake and position the car and the speed of the car at the entry to the corner there's what we call the
00:05:27high line this blue one car a he goes around here he doesn't take what we call a traditional apex where
00:05:33you clip it on the way out he stays high we see mark widderbottom doing this a lot there's a lot of grip
00:05:37out there it's very heavily banked and quite fast but if your car stops well and you can carry a little
00:05:42bit of entry speed in here you can go back to what you call your classic line and we get this
00:05:46crisscross that we talk about in here you tuck under and the reason they're doing that if this car just
00:05:52gets to there doesn't have to get all the way up beside him just gets to there he can maintain that
00:05:57position all the way down here to turn six so you can see what happens challenging at turn six effectively
00:06:04starts here under brakes now brakes are a drum here let me just show you a little bit of this vision over the
00:06:09course of the weekend with lots of teams having a real drama down at the hairpin and it's not anyone
00:06:15it's uh it's it's lots of drivers from lots of teams they're not dills they know where the corner
00:06:20is they just can't stop the cars so you've got to ask why can't they stop the cars can't be that hard
00:06:26there's even lounge now here's some data we've pulled this out of one of the race cars so this is
00:06:32what the engineers look at these this is a total lap of simmons plane this is the speed tracers
00:06:37here's your throttle position so you can see it correlates now here's our hairpin here so we come
00:06:42along 100 throttle okay down we go these are our gear changes whack whack whack whack whack now this
00:06:48green line corresponding is our brake tray so obviously when it's 100 throttle that's at zero
00:06:53jumps off the throttle jumps on the brakes now this guy should be in a bit of trouble but can you see
00:06:57that modulation there of the brake pedal that's as he's doing the heel and toe thing he's modulating it
00:07:02probably a little too much there but look brake temperatures blue one is front
00:07:06orange one is rear and if we come down to here we're seeing nearly a thousand degrees centigrade
00:07:11now remember water boils at 100 so when you do that after 20 25 30 laps the front brakes actually
00:07:19start to fade obviously they just don't work as well but because the rear brakes are running at half the
00:07:24temperature they continue to work very well so drivers get in a real quantity in quandary including
00:07:29right there in that race we just saw determining well hang on my car's locking up at the rear and your
00:07:35engineer saying wind more brakes to the rear because your fronts aren't working but you don't
00:07:39want to wind them to the rear because they're already locking up and it's really hard and here's
00:07:43evidence here here's a speed trace see the blue one that's a rear wheel lock up we're seeing there
00:07:47so it's very very difficult circumstance for a driver and an engineer to work out on the fly so we
00:07:52come back to our diagram you can see what happens at turn six down here actually starts by the efficiency
00:07:59of your braking way way back here isn't it great to have that virtual office you can take anywhere
00:08:04penright proper racing line larko down there in the microsoft office 365 tech center so the big question
00:08:11for this one is will david reynolds make it to the start grid for the fifth race of the season 100
00:08:17k's lies ahead of us we'll take a break and answer that one after this
00:08:21this has been quite a sight
00:08:47this weekend we've seen him at quite a few of our v8 supercar events we know well this is matt hall
00:08:52australia's aerobatic whiz got cameras on board and obviously on the ground he's
00:08:58just been going nuts up there the aircraft is an mxsr and at times he's pulling plus or minus 14g
00:09:06he's a third generation pilot xraaf that's what you call freestyling which is what you can do right
00:09:13now crompo give us that update on car 55 i can't believe this we need to do a then and now
00:09:18a shot of this have a look at this this is the front left corner of the botlow racing ford falcon
00:09:22of davy reynolds the last time we saw it as you pointed out a moment ago maddie it was hanging out
00:09:26of a fence up at turn four and it was completely ripped apart they're going to be able to run the
00:09:30car in the race is the answer to the big question the other concern that i had was what it looked like
00:09:34on the front right hand corner because it made huge impact with that wall so chris o'toole and maddie
00:09:39and all the boys from fpr here have done a stellar job real round of applause stuff to be able to get
00:09:44this car back out they had to change front suspension cross member they had huge damage on
00:09:49the right rear corner of the car as well and i'll bowl inside here to ford performance racing tim
00:09:54edwards is in here i can't believe the job that your boys have done you're the team principal you've
00:09:58got to be proud of your men and women in here for achieving that oh yeah absolutely i mean to replace
00:10:03the whole front end of the car including the cross member and steering rack i mean that means that you
00:10:07know that's what the engine sits on you know rear suspension as well they did a fantastic job and
00:10:11to get it out there she looks a bit battle scarred but she'll be all right but it will be out there
00:10:15that's the point uh here's the scattered components come up here tim give us a stock take uh jones he
00:10:21looks after all this stuff in subassembly he's actually had a bit of work to do this afternoon
00:10:24for once in his life but have a look at just talk us through it yeah well i mean that's probably about
00:10:29half the pile actually the other the other half's a bit more confidentially moved away but yeah i mean
00:10:33there's probably 70 grand's worth of parts that we've just torn up so pretty disappointing
00:10:37pretty disappointing but an awesome job to get it back out there thanks tim good luck this
00:10:40afternoon boys here's david you're going to be out there i thought you'd be on holiday but let me
00:10:44have a look you will start from position 10 row number five and it's all back in business for you
00:10:49man what a fantastic team they'd turn it around within an hour and you know unbelievable job i'm
00:10:54being here watching the whole time it's been unreal fantastic performance uh tell me what are your
00:10:59thoughts about yesterday's format and car of the future and the way it's all evolving there's been a bit
00:11:03of learning in the whole process uh yeah it's a big learning curve yesterday's format was a bit
00:11:07different it's not too bad but um i didn't wasn't really fan at the start it was too there's too much
00:11:13going on we're simple people drivers we can't compute that much information at once go and do
00:11:19some of that driver computing now and get ready for race number five dave patterson engineer there for
00:11:22botlow as well well done dave and your guys now where's i saw charlie schwirkot over here before
00:11:27have a go he's on the tools he's on the broom this is productivity like we've never seen before
00:11:32owner for the gel when car which makes car number four for for performance racing and alex davis and
00:11:37his driver here as well yeah that's right it's a show-off move this one gotta make it look good
00:11:42don't it boys it's great to have you back in the category for both of you because you've been off
00:11:45doing career cup successfully and we know what a tremendous pedigree this guy's got here and
00:11:50overseas in the category and you're back in the game once again charlie and the gel when car it's good
00:11:54to have you here making it four for four for for performance racing yeah no it's good it's great to be
00:11:58back it's been a while now two years and two years in the making to get it all going again so yeah
00:12:03no it's good and uh looking for some good results from this fellow we'll get up the tree a little
00:12:08bit a little bit of work to do but we'll get there and can you yeah i mean we've we've shown glimpses
00:12:13both at clips land at the grand prix and we had we were fifth on sunday at the grand prix which was
00:12:17a pretty good result for us struggled a little bit more than we would hope this weekend um but you
00:12:23know plenty of work to do we've got another race left today so we'll be pushing hard for sure
00:12:26we're looking forward to it thanks gents for having a chat this afternoon we'll sneak out into
00:12:29the lane there are 28 competitors and typically always bite off more than i can chew we're never
00:12:34going to get to anything like a decent number of them but i would like to slide up the road g'day
00:12:38good to see you doing some hard work there uh we'll sneak up the road to brad jones racing
00:12:43because uh next weekend if you're a v8 supercar aficionado we are going back to one of the great
00:12:48racetracks we're off to pukekoe just outside auckland in new zealand and of course with the form that
00:12:53these guys here at bjr have been putting together chances are we may well see fabian kulta where is
00:13:00he is he in the car he is in the car doing very well there and that'll be good phil keedy's engineer
00:13:04at the door just some last minute chat hey fab next weekend we're off to new zealand and it doesn't
00:13:10get much better than having a fast kiwi doing well here at the moment you've got to be looking forward
00:13:13to that i'm mega excited about going home you know obviously uh it's awesome to go home and race in
00:13:18front of a home crowd and you know get to catch up with some friends and family at the same time
00:13:22but also awesome to go off the back of you know strong results like we've had here this weekend
00:13:26great run yesterday not quite where you wanted to be in that last race have you made any tweaks now
00:13:31going into this final one today yeah hopefully to the demon ones um look we've made a couple of
00:13:35adjustments you know just make it a little bit nicer a bit nicer on its tire and hopefully we can
00:13:40tend for with frosty and thoughts about this car versus last year's car and what it is that you like
00:13:45about it that's now giving you these results and your team's all of a sudden jumped up to be very
00:13:48competitive i like it because it's new um it's uh you know it's pretty important you know last year
00:13:54we were running with older machinery i think now that we've got machinery that's the same as
00:13:59everybody else you know we're back to 11 playing field and that's why we've got our car speed back
00:14:03i'm reaching for my bit of paper because uh where did you end up qualifying going to be up the front
00:14:07starting on the front row so this is a good spot for you to be yeah it's awesome you know i've uh
00:14:11had plenty of practice off this spot you know had grid two for the last one and and for saturday so
00:14:16looking forward to getting into it go get stuck into it thanks fabian fabian coultard left foot
00:14:20breaker very different in terms of his driving style to many of the other guys bright he's just
00:14:23closed up for business here but i'll pluck the door open and say g'day quickly because he starts a
00:14:28little bit further back in this one but an awesome drive in that last run we haven't got much time
00:14:31but uh thoughts about this car it's working beautifully and the team's clicking together well
00:14:35yeah it is mate it's uh you know the car both cars have been working great all year and uh
00:14:41you know this weekend's just been exceptional to see both cars start off the front row
00:14:45you know fabian got the win in the first one and uh you know we got that one i've just been on the
00:14:49radio my engineer and uh he's giving me the collingwood scores as we go that's the important
00:14:54stuff thanks pridey and maybe it's fatherhood that's getting the job done for you as well he's
00:14:58a new father together with lucy with young lennox jay so there you go maddie that's a few of the guys
00:15:02lining up for race number five it is going to be a beauty 100 kilometers around simmons plains
00:15:06absolutely well done cromper jason bright will start from position eight and as you saw fabian
00:15:10coolthard again starting from position number two so three races here this weekend he's been from
00:15:15box number two for all three of them and just back on that itm 400 auckland 12th to 14th of april
00:15:22that's where we're headed cannot wait to get back to pukekoe park raceway it's been upgraded
00:15:26it will be a real treat and fabian coolthard on song well anything can happen there greg murphy will
00:15:33be there of course he's the event ambassador so it's going to be terrific to go back so 100 k's ahead
00:15:37of us 42 laps it'll round out and what has been a terrific weekend of the microsoft office 365

00:20:56ford performance racing's mark winter bottom sits proudly on pole position for the fifth race of the
00:21:01season four races prior to this we've had four different winners craig lowndes shane van gisbergen
00:21:08fabian coultart and jason bright who will join them today or will somebody double up and let's zero in
00:21:16on the facts and figures here of simmons plains neil and just a little over 2400 meters of racetrack for
00:21:24our seven turn racetrack this afternoon 100 kilometers 42 laps is the journey rick kelly still got the
00:21:30lap record here by the barest of margins you can see the top speeds just slightly over 270 kilometers
00:21:35an hour the slower speed is at the hairpin 50 kilometers an hour tough on brakes been relatively
00:21:40easy on tires in fact when you look at the tire degradation numbers from yesterday and today
00:21:44the tires have been have been behaving very very well so it'll be interesting to see how this one
00:21:50unfolds down on the grid in the vip zone no less mark beretta with the premier two matty we were
00:21:55talking earlier about how fantastic it's been the history of motorsport in tasmania
00:21:59and premier lara giddings is here with me larry look around here in the crowds and the weather
00:22:03it is just superb oh you couldn't ask for better particularly for this style of racing
00:22:08this time of the year it's absolutely fantastic the hills just chock-a-block
00:22:12of people the atmosphere is great can't wait for this next race you've really put the state on show
00:22:17for us here this weekend but but this event too is such an important part of tasmania's sporting
00:22:21calendar this is the biggest single event really in our sporting calendar it attracts around 60 000
00:22:27people across the three days which is big for tasmania so we love our v8 supercars and it's
00:22:32great to see them still here and i do know you're a bit of a jamie wincup fan as well yeah i do like
00:22:37jamie wincup i've been on the podium with him before and i hope to see him back up there this time i get
00:22:42hope you get to present to him later on today premier thank you very much thank you down here
00:22:47with a happier james courtney on the second row of the good james uh p7 earlier today p4 mate a little
00:22:53bit of competitiveness creeping back into the team mate yeah look we uh we should have really been
00:22:57further up in both races this one this morning and yesterday we had a bit of a drama in qualifying but
00:23:02this is probably we've been in the top five majority of the running so um yeah i'm looking
00:23:06forward to this afternoon guard had a great run in the earlier race so uh we'll tear it up and grab a
00:23:11podium here hopefully as i say mate i reckon the sport's healthy when you guys are doing good hey while we're
00:23:15here just quickly pete i don't know if you can see down here i talked about the brake bias the
00:23:18brake balance before here it is here this is the thing james the hell won't touch it mate he'll play
00:23:22with this during the race and he can wind it for a raft and that's a cable connected to his brake pedal
00:23:27and it basically changes the leverage point on the brake pedal to determine how much pressure
00:23:31goes to the front or the rear good luck working that one out pal
00:23:38everybody in the commentary box larko shuddered when you went to make a few changes there and i reckon
00:23:44james is going to punch you out if you did ultra sensitive you change him a quarter of a turn and
00:23:48it changes the behavior of the car and i thought oh no yeah i thought for sure he was going to give
00:23:52it a tweak this is going to be wild you can just sense there now the last race of the weekend winner
00:23:58bottom on the front row of the grid with cool thud wink up courtney because courtney hasn't been at
00:24:03the pointy end for a little while he'll be hard to beat and mclaughlin who's done such an extraordinary
00:24:08job so far in p5 with davison so i reckon this one could be ugly down at turn four you're just on
00:24:15board there with russell ingalls super cheap auto racing commodore start from position 20 he's been
00:24:22trying to crack the nut and win here he's had two second placings came here since uh
00:24:29and here first in 1996 so he's done almost 40 races in this circuit
00:24:38cars look great don't they they so well prepared and that's an unbelievable effort
00:24:43with the bottle guys to get dave reynolds car on the grid for this event
00:24:49frosty's been good off the start this year that side of the road is the clean side of the road so
00:24:54instead of castrol ford there will be hard to beat to the first quarter
00:25:00let's have a look at the fusso starting grid for race number five hundred k's this afternoon simmons
00:25:04play its raceway and for the 26th time in his career mark winterbottom on the pole from the race
00:25:09three winner from yesterday favorite coultard and then jamie wincup our reigning champion alongside
00:25:14james courtney's having his best run since way back in 2006 here man of the match for that move
00:25:19turn six scotty mclaughlin he'll be alongside will davidson who's still not happy with car balance
00:25:24then jonathan webb and jason bright winner of race number four followed by shane van gisberg and
00:25:30david reynolds can you believe that they got that car of david reynolds out there and repaired from the
00:25:35damage it received craig lounge and garth tander side by side combined they've got 13 race victories
00:25:41at this circuit so a wealth of experience and they know how to get to the front lounge of course is not a
00:25:46happy man after the weekend that he's had further back that's alex davidson we checked in with him
00:25:52and his team boss charlie schwerkoff jill went forward david wall innocent victim down at turn
00:25:57four we've mentioned russell engel there's todd and james side by side both nissons different sponsors
00:26:05alex prema turned 31 on friday and rick kelly with murrow engel the sp tools racing mesadings
00:26:13bends with tim and johnny out of djr bringing up the rear of the grid for wilson security racing
00:26:25so what a performance from ford performance racing to get this car back out on the grid
00:26:31extraordinary just before you did that crossed me down there earlier matt they had the strings out
00:26:35for the wheel alignment which they do manually with these cars to just make sure they're right and it
00:26:39all stringed up well and i'm sure it's not absolutely pristine but they have done a remarkable
00:26:43job joining lee holdsworth erwin tools entry there the europeus motorsport v8 entry and he's been in
00:26:51the mid pack pretty much all weekend and not giving an awful lot away in lap speed to the lead cars
00:26:55here's will davidson just not convinced about getting on top of the balance with this car at the moment
00:27:00spent a little bit of time speaking with him and mark winterbottom his teammate earlier keep her rolling in
00:27:04about another meter okay stop it there perfect rob star looks after james courtney and they were
00:27:10doing a little bit of repair work at the rear of the car after the last race but he felt that they've
00:27:15been making genuine ground with the balance and behavior of the car so that he thinks that they'll
00:27:19be reasonably strong now in this one they were bleeding brakes and doing little jobs on that
00:27:23car number 22 in between the races
00:27:25hard to get the start here when the cars line up around the corner so the guys are trying to straighten

00:27:47position cool to get a really racy start this is going to be even going to turn two the winnerbottom
00:27:54holds his nerve gets a good flyer and shoots through tire bundle attacked courtney good start
00:28:01he also got the inside was able to grab winker
00:28:09scott mclaughlin looks as though he's been outrun down to turn four by jonathan webb
00:28:14oh we've on the inside squeezes in front there's a little bit of contact between
00:28:21winkup and courtney turn four head it was only a brush it's no big deal but there was a little
00:28:27touch there not a lot of love lost between these two guys look at this cool dark looking racing at
00:28:32turn six and winterbottom covered him down there remember that at this stage the brakes are cold
00:28:37the tires have not pressured up the temperature's not up on the tires either so the cars are a bit awkward
00:28:41to drive in this first lap or two until everything comes up to normal temp
00:28:50will davison having a fair go at winkup two man all three starts from fabian
00:28:54coulthard have been great he's just been on the wrong side of the track
00:28:57that was winkup down to four from the hairpin tucked in behind courtney
00:29:14on the radio that someone ran him off on the back straight so that's van gisberg and his mate good
00:29:18ground there he's battling with mclaughlin and craig loud's ranging up in behind the two of them
00:29:22this will be pretty wild down here in turn six but mclaughlin might want to give this away
00:29:28it's on the dirty side of the road and he gets down the inside now lowndes and van gisbergen
00:29:32have a bit of history at this corner over the weekend whoa look at that entry into turn six but
00:29:38mclaughlin i don't know if he made contact with van gisbergen but it was mighty close
00:29:44good job for them to get through there and give each other some racing room that was very very
00:29:57good driving so winkup now just ranges up in behind cool thard knows that if he doesn't get
00:30:03winner bottom soon the brake performance will get knocked around once the car's in the slipstream and
00:30:09the cooling of the front brake isn't good enough then your brake performance isn't quite good
00:30:15enough then to be able to have a dive so he's going to do it early or he won't get it done
00:30:27so they feed on through fastest lap last time around belonged to mark winner bottom 52.4 so that's
00:30:32what happened to scott mclaughlin he got swamped at the start jason bright went around him jonathan
00:30:38webb went on the inside of him
00:30:46it's extraordinary how they all get through side by side here of the teammates
00:30:53james moffett on the right with todd kelly on the left
00:30:57that's not good i think that might it may have been why todd was complaining there a little bit i think
00:31:03he was complaining about the run up the back straight with mario engel gave him a bit of a run
00:31:07around so that's suddenly a bit of a diffuser part of the rear bumper assembly from one of the cars
00:31:12has come unglued there they're headed towards that spot down there at turn seven
00:31:17scott pyre with lee holdsworth and tony dalberto behind him
00:31:21this is going to be pretty lively because lee's on the wrong side of the road as they go up over the
00:31:29rise for turn one he's going to be able to stay there will dalberto turn in two of them get in
00:31:34there okay that was good driving from both those guys and now davison pulls up in behind slay very
00:31:40close to contact there russell engel in behind alex davison safety car so we've got that debris on
00:31:48the racetrack will trigger a safety car you can't have something of that size sitting on the racetrack
00:31:53so race director tim schenken has just called that and they'll all get the message
00:32:10and he looked as though it might have been off one of the mercs maybe tim slade the result is the
00:32:16petters stp safety car has been deployed the field will be compressed so we'll take a quick break
00:32:26welcome back well the debris has been cleared from down at turn seven but uh david reynolds
00:32:33patched up car has come unstuck so he's been showing a mechanical flag and we'll have to go through
00:32:38pit lane on the restart and it's such a stellar job to get this thing back together and it was looking
00:32:46brand new but you can't do everything in such a short period of time so the petters stp chrysler
00:32:51safety car pulls away it leaves mark winterbottom in control everybody ordered to be on their best
00:32:57behavior for the restart so this is your order winterbottom coulthard courtney then jamie winkup
00:33:05will davison jason bright
00:33:10started from position eight he's up to six and this is cool fast chance he's got to make this restart
00:33:16as good as he possibly can he's done a good job through the final corner and that's a good job they
00:33:21got away a little bit on courtney and winkup that's as good as you can expect when you're the lead
00:33:26driver you can basically put the throttle on whenever you like so we got a little jump
00:33:31winterbottom courtney winkup just in behind the two front runners
00:33:37is fabian close enough will he have a dive early on down here at turn four probably not this time
00:33:42so single file almost van gisbergen tucked in close it's amazing the difference between a couple of
00:33:53races based on qualifying position as lounge and van gisbergen get back into it here tander was racy in
00:33:58the last one because he qualified so poorly he's getting the whack at the moment look at this so these
00:34:03guys were at it in race number three yesterday at this time van gisbergen prevails down the inside at
00:34:09turn six
00:34:13so it emphasizes mark the point about how critical qualifying is so tander who did such a great job
00:34:19in grace number four starts further back in this one finds himself in that mid-pack battling so hard
00:34:25to clear the traffic certainly is and he was having a bumping duel with scott pie on the way out of turn
00:34:31four or in turn four on the previous lap so van gisbergen goes across the cover but he's moved it over in
00:34:37the braking area there's a lot of chat about this because you can't move the car over once you've
00:34:42committed to the braking area there was drama here last year with clowns and davison that's a big move
00:34:48there from van gisbergen they couldn't go anywhere mclaughlin and lounge were parked up
00:34:53so van gisbergen took a bit of a punt and went down the inside got away with that but then he blocked
00:35:00lounge on the previous lap into turn four
00:35:07as you see qualifying here is just so important it's so hard to pass
00:35:14guys have been a bit more contained than i thought they would be i
00:35:16thought there'd be more drama at turn four russell ingalls come to the pit lane there as well in the super
00:35:21cheap car you can see him way off in the background here he is so i don't know what the drama is here
00:35:26for rusty he's got a puncture
00:35:33and here we go oh that's uh russell was involved there somewhere with tim slave
00:35:38and there's obviously a few cars involved in that so maybe somewhere on the line he's copped a
00:35:42puncture in that process you can hear matt crawford good call scoffy just standing next to
00:35:48next to russell's car he's actually got a hole it's ripped the side of the uh side wall of his
00:35:52front left tire there so that's obviously a result of contact yeah well done larko and that's um
00:35:58that's a bit unfortunate because he's had a tough weekend he's
00:36:02forming the early part of the year has been very good and this weekend when tanda
00:36:05and courtney run out of the same garage effectively have been very competitive russell hasn't found the
00:36:11sweet spot for his car over the weekend and that's the damage you can see there now we're on
00:36:15board now with winkup as he's right up in behind we're just up in front you can see courtney of
00:36:21courtyard and winder bottom winkup's trying to get by courtney
00:36:26he returned russell's car back to their adelaide settings because remember he jumped out of the
00:36:30truck for the glipsel 500 and we all remarked how competitive he was there's bright getting stuck
00:36:35into it with will davison here as well it's a shame we won't get to see russell now after that tire damage
00:36:42to see whether or not that setup change helped him jonathan webb down the inside will davis and
00:36:46contact that's awkward in that spot
00:36:55bright's cleared himself with that angry pack
00:36:58yeah that was a good move he needed to get by he did a good job on board now with scott mclaughlin
00:37:03right up behind jonathan webb webb dive down the inside i thought that was going to be a drama with
00:37:10will davison now van gisbergen tries to get down the outside of scott mclaughlin they're all alongside
00:37:18each other there's a bit of an overlap they come out of there clean so lounges behind tander is the next
00:37:24car that's the top 11 cars and ingles also radio to say there's further problems for the front left
00:37:31hand corner of that car
00:37:380.2 of a second is the official margin winter bottom to coulthard then courtney went cut bright
00:37:44this is a brewing battle this one this pack here it's pretty tightly squeezed at the moment
00:37:49it's headed up by davison
00:37:51oh this is on board here with jamie
00:37:58so look for wink up here he'll look to the inside but there's never any room because
00:38:01inevitably the guy in front covers which in this case is courtney
00:38:05they're all doing it moved it over in the braking area also so
00:38:10lucky so far to not have further contact once you put your foot on the brake at the hairpin and the car
00:38:15in front moves across you are definitely going to make contact in the braking area if that's like
00:38:20that that's matt crawford bryce seals just looking at the left hand front look at the pressure that
00:38:27fabian's putting on frosty and that's something that frosty remarked on in between races four and
00:38:32five in race four he qualified seventh and finished six and he just said to me he was racing the whole
00:38:38time he was in battles the whole way also said to us when we were there matt that uh he was finding
00:38:44that the brakes were hurting a bit as well you guys are still gapping everyone else it looks really
00:38:48well to keep it up so the microsoft office 365 last four laps shows three out of four green boxes for
00:38:54fabian numbers don't lie on that subject of brakes radio message it's a favorite then you're going to have
00:39:01to be easier on the brakes seeing big brake temperatures and that message you just heard
00:39:08then was to jason bright so both of them it's because that car on screen is ingesting hugely
00:39:13hot air from the preceding car as well as it being the second toughest track on brakes on the tour
00:39:20so once they get much above 900 degrees they'll start to fade at the fronts then you lock the rear
00:39:25brakes and you have a problem pulling up at the hairpin that was his chance then that was the closest that
00:39:30he's been into turn six that was his opportunity come off the off the hair pit at turn four mark
00:39:36larkin explained the racing lines there before and the way he got off the corner was very good he was
00:39:42in the slipstream and he got right up as close as you need to be
00:39:48maybe a missed opportunity there for fabian look how close they are at the hair pit so that's the
00:39:53exit first gear to second and you've got to get the drive off the corner
00:39:57courtney is struggling a little bit for rear grip
00:40:03now that's back to bright so from wing cups car the car that's in fifth position is jason bright
00:40:10a previous race winner see the amount of flutter at the rear of the bonnet on
00:40:15wind cups there in the buffeted air from james's car
00:40:18jamie chases third gear a bit longer through turn six seven than many of them he didn't do the
00:40:26really super short shift grabbing fourth gear earlier so the car balance must be pretty good
00:40:31to handle that to chase it further up through the torque and horsepower range to be able to cope with
00:40:36without the car winding sideways
00:40:41he's got to try and do something here about courtney and he's got to try and do it cleanly because if
00:40:47he doesn't he's going to have a real problem here with jason bryan who's cleared himself of that
00:40:51next group of cars having qualified down the order as we said when we chatted on
00:40:57the pit apron before things got started
00:40:59so he's one of the guys that by comparison to his run in the last race
00:41:04qualifying has really burned him in this event despite having a quick car
00:41:12yeah russell was just a part of the pit lane again they had a good look around good shake
00:41:16of things couldn't find anything obvious i mean sometimes when you have three hot tires and you put
00:41:21one cold tire with a lesser pressure on can make the car feel kind of weird russell's pretty experienced
00:41:26he'd know that so uh nothing obvious at the moment yeah i heard him say that there was something
00:41:32weird about it matt crawford was talking about is the steering straight that's normally the first
00:41:36indicator of whether there's further damage if the steering isn't straight or not the enforcers back
00:41:43out there we know one thing he will never give up mark winterbottom looks to just to put a little
00:41:47bit of fresh air in between him and fabian coolpart who was on maximum attack over the last five laps
00:41:53frosty trying to chase down for its first win of the season
00:42:02for such a short circuit it can do some real damage this place this is dean fiore
00:42:07in the dodo entry damage to the front right of that commodore so we're approaching the halfway mark
00:42:15of this fifth race and this little battle between john o webb and scott mclaughlin continues
00:42:24shane van gisberg and is watching patiently probably impatiently
00:42:28or to the point behind waiting for something to unfold so that's positions seven eight and nine and
00:42:33the last lap the fastest guy appropriately was the leader mark winterbottom he's still in the low 52s
00:42:39he's actually skipped the margin out slightly in that break and here's murrow engel who went off
00:42:42the road at turn six in the pit lane the gap is actually out to 0.8 now winterbottom to coolthard
00:42:49here's what happened to him he ran wide at six and that will have done damage to that tyre set
00:42:56and in he comes so a couple of guys have done a very good job alex premer has made the most
00:43:02amount of ground he's made eight positions starting 24th up to 16th scott pie four spots and rick kelly
00:43:11up 25th very good job six positions for whatever reason i just asked a second ago todd kelly now
00:43:18he's got some drama went on to like six cylinders oh that's not good news they're out of spare engines
00:43:24they're talking about not seeing any data on the telemetry that gives them an indication or a
00:43:40hint as to what the problem may be so todd's taking the opportunity to pull it off rather
00:43:44than let it hammer itself to death they've got a very short turnaround now they're going to have
00:43:49to replenish their engine stock for next weekend in new zealand
00:43:53so it's 0.87 of a second so winterbottom's actually easing away now from coolthard fastest
00:43:58man in the first sector on this lap it's actually james courtney who's done the best time we've seen
00:44:02all race long so hard to imagine then when you're this far into the race that your tyres have still
00:44:07got that level of performance in them but they have this little battle here continues to
00:44:13represent a nice little point of friction because pride is just annoying the back of wind cup at the
00:44:20moment so jamie cannot afford to relax and incidentally we were making reference to him a moment ago but
00:44:28it was a happy birthday on friday for alex premier premier 31 years of age
00:44:32the fastest laps
00:44:44who with a 52 07 just made a little bit of ground still
00:44:47around a second behind
00:44:50Winterbottom, they've been trading those laps
00:44:52Courtney did a very good
00:44:54first sector that Neil made reference to before

00:45:02he hasn't been able to get a handle on the new
00:45:04car and obviously
00:45:05McLaughlin's been going very well
00:45:08in this race, he's only about one tenth of a second
00:45:10slower than his team mate, so they've made
00:45:12an improvement to that car today for sure
00:45:14Scafie, I'm standing down here at what is
00:45:16one of the best places in Australian motorsport
00:45:18to view a V8 supercar
00:45:20coming off turn 7 and the
00:45:22commitment we talk about here, these guys
00:45:24behind me here are coming through here
00:45:26at 100% throttle and they make
00:45:28that commitment way back over
00:45:30there at turn 6 coming off the main straight
00:45:32now funny story, because they do that
00:45:34they end up, a lot of them in the dirt
00:45:36throws up a lot of dust we've seen which is
00:45:38quite dangerous, so during the course of
00:45:40the event they've actually put some rocks down
00:45:42there, like some aggregates, some road aggregates
00:45:44and I walked over here a second ago
00:45:46stuck my head out, there's one went off
00:45:47and I got sprayed by rocks and I had to duck
00:45:50down like an idiot, you know as a kid when you go
00:45:52to the speedway and you sort of, why isn't anyone
00:45:53sitting up in the first three rows of the seats
00:45:55so down you go with your hot dog
00:45:56full of dirt
00:45:58we don't feel sorry for you either
00:46:05that's the thing, that's why we're laughing
00:46:06so 165 kilometres an hour where Mark Larkin was just standing
00:46:12one of the best corners in Australian motorsport, really committed, used every bit of the road
00:46:16and then up and over that rise
00:46:18turn 1 and 2
00:46:19and that speed reference you make is the slowest corner in the middle of the corner
00:46:23so they only just touched that ever so briefly
00:46:25and everything after that is all acceleration through turn 7
00:46:29that's the slowest, so that's more than 100 miles an hour in the old language
00:46:33so they're fairly honking along there at the moment
00:46:35look at Bright
00:46:36and consider the brake temps on the front of that car
00:46:38and he's already been warned about it
00:46:40just to try and get some cool air in the front
00:46:41so he's very close to the back of Winkup
00:46:44these guys are only 3.6 seconds

00:46:50so it's not a very big margin

00:58:16facilities around the
00:58:17country and internationally
00:58:17they do a huge job
00:58:18the flag is the fire
00:58:24marshals the intervention
00:58:25marshals there's an
00:58:26enormous team of people
00:58:27that bring the show
00:58:28together and it's
00:58:30volunteer work and they
00:58:31do a huge job
