00:00We're about to start the first of our three races here this weekend, the GMC 400, and
00:14a more spectacular sight for a street race you really could not imagine.
00:18There's Monaco, there's Adelaide, there's the Gold Coast, yes, but this is quite remarkable.
00:23The Parliament of Australia and these cars will very soon be making more noise than you'll
00:30have ever heard here.
00:31Canberra will never be the same, but we're pretty sure that everyone here is going to
00:35enjoy it, and now we hope you'll enjoy the racing with Mark Osler, Greg Rust and Barry Sheen.
00:42Well, John Bauer will be carrying our big clear and simple onboard Canberra.
00:47He's had a terrible run this morning, an alleged technical infringement on the Caterpillar
00:53Ford.
00:54There was a lot of debate, a lot of argument over that, but the result is he's had to
00:57go to the back of the field.
00:58Brad Jones will be carrying our cameras to Glenn Seaton, the FTR Falcon, always got some
01:04great shots of Glenn, the Ford Livet in-car camera, one of the few, probably the only remaining
01:09driver to use an open-face helmet today, so he provides us some great shots.
01:14There's Russell Ingle carrying our Walker in-car, a long way back Russell, and with a lot of work
01:21to do in the second of the Castrol Commodores, and that's a marvellous shot, a grid full
01:27of V8 supercars.
01:28Here's your Ford race analysis.
01:29Yeah, 25 laps of the distance, 97.5, catches under 100km total distance, 32 starters, and
01:35the pit window.
01:36There's a compulsory tyre stop in this race, and the teams can pit between lap 2 and lap
01:4217.
01:43There's a lot of photographers gathering down at Turn 1, which makes me wonder.
01:47I think that's what's going to happen.
01:49War is about to be waged on the streets of the nation's capital, an invasion of V8 supercars
01:54as we get set for the GNC 400.
01:56We are underway, a marvellous start by Seaton.
01:59He runs parallel with Tanda up to Turn 1 for the first time, no contact between any of them,
02:04and Tanda settles into the lane, forcing Seaton wide.
02:07Oh, it's a parking lot back there.
02:09Oh, look at this.
02:10Look at the inside here.
02:11That's Cameron McLean now, and Todd Kelly.
02:13Oh, dear me.
02:14That's so tight, first corner.
02:18To the point where the second of the Optus Commodores came to a virtual standstill, Barry, at the
02:23very back of the pack.
02:24Looks like Thomas Mazira, from what we're being told from Pit Lane, may have sustained some damage
02:28to the Densitron Commodore.
02:29They file through the exit of Queen Victoria Terrace for the first time.
02:33If you look at the front of Todd Kelly's car, he'd be lucky there if he hasn't damaged the
02:39radio.
02:40You see Ingle up the inside there.
02:41Oh, look at this.
02:42Somebody's straight on there.
02:43Craig Lowndes up the inside of the Vita 10 forward, making moves, trying to get in track
02:48position on this critical opening lap, as these big thundering V8 supercars settle into
02:52position.
02:53This 25 lap contest.
02:54Oh, there's Cameron McConville.
02:55Oh, dear.
02:56Oh, dear.
02:57Very impressive.
02:58Yeah.
02:59In the back of it.
03:00Somebody's given him a tap there, no doubt.
03:01Well, I think he got caught up in that first lap in Varenne when everyone was piling into
03:05Turn 1.
03:06That's a real shame for the Autopro team.
03:07They've done so well here this weekend with that car.
03:11The youngster from Victoria, the 26-year-old.
03:13Look at the damage to the front of the Autopro Commodore.
03:16Obviously caught up in a sandwich-style situation.
03:18We saw everyone line astern there coming into some of those corners.
03:21It was just so tightly bunched up.
03:22Out in front, a marvellous aerial shot from the Goodyear blimp as we see.
03:28Garth Tander out in front.
03:29Seated.
03:30We go back to Scaife.
03:31Then it's Lowndes.
03:32Larkham.
03:33Larry Perkins files through that chicane.
03:35This is the completion of lap 1 of 25.
03:37The GMC 400, the first of three races this weekend.
03:41Flat out up pit straight for the first time.
03:43Garth Tander leads the big charge.
03:45Big field of V8s behind as they thunder down pit straight,
03:48building up to 220 kilometres an hour before they break hard for Turn 1.
03:51Tander in the position he wanted to.
03:53Took maximum advantage of that pole position.
03:55And now he's not a nice clear bit of road in front of him.
03:58Actually, I'm really surprised how far the top sort of five...
04:02They're quite spread out, really.
04:04If you consider they've done one lap, you know,
04:07that's a big distance on Larkham there, as an example.
04:10Tander fires out of Queen Victoria Terrace down toward turns 8 and 9.
04:14Great shots there from the track service.
04:16You can see how hard these cars are working.
04:17The drivers bouncing them off the curbs.
04:19There's something wrong with Larkham's car.
04:22There's smoke.
04:23You see the smoke coming from...
04:24I wonder if he's had contact with the concrete walls.
04:26No, I don't know.
04:27It's definitely here.
04:28Look at the back there and see if we...
04:30Yeah, I saw smoke pouring out of it just now.
04:32So I don't know.
04:33Steven Ellery's right up in that battle, too,
04:35in the super-cheap autos machine.
04:36So good start.
04:37Here comes Scaife just having a sniff around the tail.
04:39Of Glen Seton's car.
04:41As they swing through State Circle.
04:43Fastest part of the track.
04:44Tander's got a three or four-car length lead over Seton.
04:47As they swing hard right down to Flynn Drive.
04:50So Seton in second.
04:52Scaife in third.
04:53Craig Lowndes in fourth.
04:54There's a bit of a gap back to Larkham.
04:56Perkins.
04:57Ellery.
04:58Paul Radisic from the shell forward.
04:59Tony Longhurst and Steven Johnson.
05:00That's the top ten.
05:01To get past here, you've really got to get right as close as you can
05:06and just basically grit your teeth and hope there's room
05:09because it's so tight.
05:11And, you know, it's a massive commitment when you make up your mind.
05:14You know, you've committed and there's not an awful lot of room.
05:17Keep in mind, once they complete this lap, the pit window will be open
05:21for that compulsory tyre stop.
05:23It's going to be very easy to see what teams do here,
05:25whether they try and get this stop out of the way as soon as possible
05:27or some will leave it late.
05:29It really could determine who wins this motor race.
05:31And keep in mind, too, the pit crews are going to be under
05:33enormous amount of pressure to get it right.
05:35Tanda continues to leave the field and has a couple of car lengths
05:40on second place.
05:41Sink, an escape.
05:42Look at them coming through there again.
05:43Barry concerned about Mark Larkham's Mitre 10 forward
05:46as they file through turn one.
05:48Now we've got a couple...
05:49Ah, it's Russell.
05:50Yep.
05:51Now let's have a listen here as Russell files in for his pit stop.
06:02Team working hard, getting the tyres, nice clean stop so far.
06:04Yeah, we were going to hear from Russell,
06:06but we've obviously got a bit of radio trouble there.
06:09Yeah, that's a pretty good stop.
06:11Oh, Canterfilla.
06:12J.B.
06:13Grant Daniel is on the spot.
06:15This is where you're really going to see tactics play a part
06:17in this race.
06:18Now they have come in early, but this is all planned.
06:20Now John Bauer wanted to do this because he's starting
06:22from the back of the grid.
06:23Now if he can come in and do a good stop,
06:25that means he may leapfrog other cars when they start to fit later
06:28in the race.
06:29Now his advantage is he isn't back because apparently the
06:32scrutiny is yesterday found that he had a problem with his oil cooler
06:35and that a bracket on it was giving him aerodynamic advantage.
06:39So he's starting from the back making his job even tougher today.
06:42Someone got off there.
06:44I'm not sure where that might have been.
06:45The AutoPro Commodore.
06:46Yeah, it looked like it.
06:47Just on that two while we were in pit lane there,
06:49you could see a couple of other drivers taking advantage of that stop while Grant
06:52was covering the action from John Bauer.
06:54This is another one.
06:55Craig Bauer, another to stop early.
06:56So possibly Stone Brothers Racing going for an early pit stop option.
07:00Russell Ingle was in.
07:01We hear that Brad Jones is in trouble too down in pit lane.
07:04Apparently there's some damage to the Aussie male forward.
07:06So it's all happening here.
07:07Canberra, the streets have erupted.
07:09There's the Aussie male car.
07:10You can see the damage.
07:11Trying to get that bonnet back down.
07:13I'm not sure if he got caught in that first lap tangle.
07:16Brad Daniel.
07:18Yeah, Brad Jones has come in because of that first lap malay.
07:21It certainly was a tough first lap round there.
07:23Brad Jones is bearing the battle scars.
07:25He's done his front spoiler.
07:27Apparently he also slashed a rear tyre.
07:29So they've got to change that too.
07:31Clench, Ford and another two Holdens.
07:34Tander, Seton, Scape and Lowndes.
07:37They are your top four.
07:38Mark Larkin completes the top five in the early stages of the GMC 400.
07:42Battle scars are plenty.
07:43Stephen Richards, we understand, has come into pit lane in the second of the Kmart Racing Commodores.
07:47Now look at Scape trying to have a go at Seton as they run down towards Kings Avenue on the end of Queen Victoria Terrace.
07:54So Seton now is being hounded by both the Mobile Holden Racing Team Commodores.
07:59To the top left of your screen there you can see the Aussie male team continuing to work on Brad Jones Falcon for the action.
08:06Lowndes sitting in behind his teammate Scape.
08:08They're trying to apply plenty of pressure to Glenn Seton and see if he'll crack under the strain.
08:12Seton tremendously experienced as he leads the Holden Racing Team Commodores.
08:17Rouse State Circle once again breaking hard for Turn 11.
08:21Just out past the Chinese Embassy.
08:24They get hard on the gas.
08:25Trying to chase Garth Tander.
08:26The gap out to two seconds now.
08:28The Valvoline Cummins driver on top on the streets of Canberra.
08:31Pole position man.
08:32And now he's leading this first race.
08:34Look at that shot out the back.
08:37Oh!
08:38Canberra shows you the way.
08:40Escape with the lights ablaze.
08:42Monsters the curves.
08:43He is using all the road.
08:45If you look how close...
08:46Oh!
08:47Yes!
08:48Well, we think yes.
08:50Oh, what a brilliant move.
08:51Wow.
08:52That's the kind of commitment you need.
08:53You know, he just made up his mind.
08:55And that was a very, very good move.
08:58Passes lap.
08:59Meanwhile, Garth Tander on 146.
09:01That's about two seconds.
09:03Craig Lowndes has got a problem, Mark.
09:04I'm sorry to come across you there.
09:05It looks like he's slowing down or possibly coming in for his stop.
09:08No, we've got a safety car on the track.
09:10No, we've got a little yellows out.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Wave yellows.
09:13When it's waved, it means that there's something a bit serious going on somewhere.
09:18Craig's read that very early, obviously.
09:20Probably wreckage all over the track.
09:22And it's what they forecast.
09:23Ah, it's the safety car.
09:2532 V8 monsters hammering around this circuit.
09:28Oh, it's Cameron McCombly obviously trying to limp around, but the car hasn't made it.
09:34That's just coming out of turn two.
09:36So they will line up behind the Walker safety car.
09:39Now, for those of you that may have just joined us, we should clarify this for you.
09:42During the course of this race, we can have up to a total of five laps behind the safety car.
09:47And they will add those first five laps to the total.
09:50And that can happen.
09:51We might have two laps behind the safety car and others coming, for example.
09:54Let's take a look at this here.
09:57Look at this.
09:58This is, that's a very, very good move.
10:00It's a move.
10:01Scaifey's got her in there and really, you know, that's ten out of ten for that Scaifey.
10:06Really good job.
10:07Cutting it fine.
10:08Yeah.
10:09Well, you've got it.
10:10There isn't any room, Mark.
10:11Yeah.
10:12Is there really?
10:13And you've got a, that was a good move.
10:15Seaton did the right thing too there.
10:16He gave him racing room.
10:17He probably could have squeezed him up on the kerber.
10:19And what do you do?
10:20You take both of you out or you cross your mudguard onto the tyre of both of you and two
10:26people out?
10:27Yeah.
10:28Oh well.
10:29Plenty of action in the early stages of race one of the GMC 400 here in Canberra.
10:35Tander leads the way now behind the safety car.
10:38From Scaife, Seaton, Lowndes, Larcombe, Larry Perkins hanging on to sixth place but he's under
10:43the safety car from Steve Ellery and Paul Ranisich.
10:45We go further back, Longhurst, Johnson, Todd Kelly, Rodney Forbes, Morris, Murphy Barguana
10:50and Stephen Richards.
10:51That's how they are at the moment.
10:53Stay with us.
10:54More right after this.
10:56It's a very familiar sight but the cars that are circulating just in front of it, not so.
11:05V8 supercars in Canberra and at the moment we're under the safety car as they clear off
11:12Cameron McConville's Auto Pro Falcon from the track.
11:16Garth Tander leads from Mark Scaife and Glenn Seaton.
11:20Scaife only recently taking Seaton's place in second.
11:24Don't forget Greg Murphy.
11:26The two Gregs in fact, Ruston Murphy will be up on the supercar site.
11:30So have a chat with them after the telecast of course.
11:37That's the 10 website you can access.
11:49On board with Glenn Seaton.
11:51And also another sprint round coming up pretty soon, gentlemen.
11:55That's the Queensland Raceway.
11:56But before we talk about that, Grant Denya.
11:59The cause of that pace car accident just then was unfortunately Cameron McConville.
12:03He copped a hit from behind in that first lap accident, which also made him run into the
12:07car in front, which squeezed his air box shut and jammed his accelerator on.
12:12So he had to just park it around the circuit.
12:14So that's a real shame for them after qualifying 11th, which was a tremendous effort.
12:17Lines are out on the safety car as they come back down Flynn Place.
12:21We understand there will be a restart this time around.
12:24Hence the reason why the drivers are continuing to weave left and right like that.
12:29I'll tell you what.
12:30Those guys who pitted early have just really fallen into their lap of their safety car
12:34because they've caught up all that ground they lost.
12:36Yeah.
12:37Under green flare conditions.
12:38So guys like John Bauer, Russell Engle, who pitted very early, they're going to be
12:42very strongly positioned by the time these leaders come in for their compulsory stop.
12:46Incidentally, that wasn't Todd Kelly that got a guy.
12:49I thought his body was up.
12:50That must have been Cameron McConville.
12:52Cameron McConville, yeah.
12:53They file underneath Commonwealth Avenue getting set for a restart.
12:57Yolita Tanda from Scaife and Seton.
13:00Do we get the green this time around?
13:02Someone's peeled off into pit lane.
13:04That's the safe to come back.
13:06We are green.
13:07We are underway.
13:08Tanda, look at this.
13:09Lowndes has taken a jump at Seton, but Seton has the inside running into turn one.
13:13Yes, this will be another difficult run through here.
13:16They're all line astern once again.
13:18Look at Paul Morris up on the back of Rodney Forbes as Wins Commodore there.
13:21Russell Engle fighting his way through the field.
13:23The Cat Falcon of John Bow as Mark mentioned before.
13:26Both of those guys have completed their pit stops.
13:30We understand that Glenn Seton may be coming in at the end of this lap to try and do his pit stop.
13:35Must be hard trying to pick a moment in there where you don't want to be in the pits where there's three or four other guys trying to pit at the one time.
13:41Did their change.
13:42There's a lot of activity.
13:43You can get down pit lane with virtually no one else there.
13:45It's going to be much better for you and for your pit crew.
13:48They thunder up Kings Avenue once again.
13:51Big field of VH.
13:52You can see the exhaust belching as they fly around State Circle.
13:57Garth Tanda in command.
13:59The championship leader, Mark Skate, with a little bit of a gap then back to Glenn's seat with Craig Lowndes breathing down his neck in fourth position.
14:06Yeah, it was a shame for Tanda.
14:07He thought out 1.2 seconds and that's what happens when the old safety car comes out.
14:12All your old work disappears.
14:14Craig Lowndes may be looking to try and duplicate the move his teammate Mark Skate made prior to that safety car on Glenn's seat.
14:21He's awfully close to Glenn as they come through that chicane.
14:23And now work down Flynn Place once again working up through the gearbox.
14:27You ride at the moment with Glenn's seat looking out the back at Craig Lowndes on the track.
14:31They are third and fourth respectively.
14:33Lap seven of 27th.
14:35Just look how close the guys go to the wall.
14:39At the end of this weekend I wouldn't think there will be a car without a scratch on the side of it.
14:46It's so tight.
14:48What's Seton going to do here?
14:50He's going in.
14:51Seton's going in.
14:52Under the pit stop rules here.
14:57They are doing a tyre stop for those who don't want to change tyres you must take the tyres off.
15:14Put them completely on the ground and then bolt them back onto the car.
15:20Grand Denya.
15:21That was a fantastic stop and that's what these guys have been practicing for.
15:25They've got brand new rattle guns which spin faster than the rest of the fields.
15:29So they reckon they've knocked three seconds off their pit stops and as you know a second in the pits could be a position on the track.
15:35There's a lot of incentive there for those guys too grand because there's a bit of a cash bonus for the fastest members of the FTR team as far as tyre changing is concerned up front though.
15:45Looks as though Tander is under siege.
15:482.5 seconds the gap that Scaife has over Craig Lowndes at the moment.
15:52This is the battle for the lead of the race and the championship.
15:55Just 12 points the difference between championship leader Mark Scaife and Garth Tander.
16:01Hasn't this guy come on strong?
16:03The 23 year old from Western Australia.
16:06And you've got to say he's really good at setting the car up because when they first came here he was really well off the pace and then qualified it on the pole.
16:16Interesting that Brad Jones is continuing there in the pits at the moment trying to repair that Aussie male Falcon.
16:22Bear in mind that whoever finishes last in this race will be on pole for tomorrow's reverse grid.
16:29So possibly that's the reason why Jones is persisting at the moment.
16:32And the Aussie male Ford a marvellous shot from up high as they exit that turn onto the front straight.
16:37That's around the edge of Lake Burley Griffin down along the front straight heading up towards the Queen Victoria Terrace area.
16:43This is Turn 1 Tander.
16:45You can see from up high is leading from Scaife through GMC Turn.
16:50This sweeping left-hander which brings them up towards the terrace in between the old and the new Parliament House.
16:58Great crowd here. Sensational.
17:01Fabulous views from the Channel 10 chopper.
17:04The sun sets over Canberra.
17:06There's plenty more action to go as the cars spear through the shadows there.
17:10It's a very difficult combination.
17:12Turn 8, Turn 9.
17:13Head up Kings Avenue once again.
17:15Garth Tander under the heat of a blow torch from Mark Scaife.
17:19It's going to be interesting to see where these two leading cars decide to pit.
17:22Lowndes still in third.
17:23There's Mark Larkham in fourth.
17:25Perkins in fifth.
17:26There's Radisic.
17:28Steven Ellery doing a fantastic job there in seventh position.
17:31Steven Johnson.
17:32Todd Kelly.
17:33Rodney Forbes.
17:34And here comes John Bauer in the Caterpillar forward.
17:38One of the early teams to pit.
17:40He'll be very well placed by the time the leaders come in for their compulsory stop.
17:44He sits right now in 20th position and working his way up from the back of the grid.
17:48So he's made up 12 spots and has pitted.
17:51So John Bauer, keep an eye on him in the Caterpillar forward.
17:54Up in front, Tander continues to lead the way from Scaife, who has the lights on,
17:59possibly trying to out-sike Tander in some way.
18:04But Tander resisted the pressure beautifully in Darwin,
18:07and he will not relinquish this lead easily.
18:10Just be looking at the lap time of Seton since he got out in his first plane flying lap.
18:15Oh, look at this, Donahue.
18:17Look at this, Donahue.
18:19Whoa.
18:20It looked as though Mark Scaife may have been considering a pit stop then as well.
18:23We'll try and have a closer look at that for you as Donahue limps into the pits in the Ultratune.
18:29TDK Commodore.
18:30Scaife has remained out there.
18:32So he didn't feel in.
18:34It looked as though he was considering it when he made his way onto the front straight.
18:37Lots of attitude from the Valvoline Cummins Commodore.
18:47Free Queen Victoria Terrace.
18:49It's a great shot there as they flash by us.
18:52You can see the sort of speed they're doing.
18:54There's a real crown in the road there, and they tend to roll right across it.
18:58Plenty of attitude.
19:00Now up Kings Avenue.
19:01Past the National Archive Centre.
19:03Tanda.
19:04A quick look in the rear view mirror.
19:05Scaife is there in second.
19:06Lowndes in third.
19:07And there is Mark Larkham in fourth place.
19:09Larry Perkins under siege.
19:11Paul Radisic has moved up a spot.
19:12He's gotten around Stephen Ellery.
19:14And you ride now with the Rad, chasing down Larry Perkins.
19:17And I was going to say before Glenn Seaton's time, once he made that stop, pit stop cost
19:22him about 36 seconds.
19:23So probably about 30 to 35 seconds is going to be the time that it takes to pit.
19:28So once you see where John Bauer and those guys who pitted early were their track position
19:31relative to the leaders, it's going to give us a real idea of how much track position they're
19:36going to make up once those guys come in for their tyre stop.
19:38You see it's terrible when that guy's driving out of the shadow into the sun.
19:42And the sun is really very, very low now.
19:44So it's, you see it lights up, lights up their faces.
19:48It's not a nice thing.
19:49What about that shot we had before Bass?
19:51They came through a state circle right down the middle of our in-car camera.
19:55So that's the sort of view that drivers would be having.
19:57Sunlight very much in their eyes.
19:59Here is the six time Bathurst winner, Larry Perkins, 50 years of age, being chased down by
20:06Paul Radisic, took his first Shell Championship race win at Eastern Creek two rounds ago.
20:16This weekend, of course, is far from over.
20:18More racing tomorrow, but even further ahead.
20:20As we look at a pass here, Radisic going round Perkins.
20:24Great move, Paul Radisic.
20:26Relatively quick all weekend.
20:28And now has taken charge.
20:31Next round, Queensland Raceway.
20:33More sprint action, but we're in the thick of it right here in the GMC 400 in camera.
20:38Oh, yes!
20:39Craig Baird.
20:40That is Craig Baird on the entry to Pint Lane.
20:41Can you believe that?
20:42Wow.
20:43How on earth has that happened?
20:45I don't know.
20:46Well, unless he's collided with another car, or he may have been going in to go for his compulsory
20:53tyre change.
20:54And there was some sort of mix up there, but that is a big hit.
20:57That's a major, major one.
20:59Those cars are doing 150, 160 kilometres an hour coming out of that turn, and he looks
21:03like he's gone head on into that concrete.
21:06You can see Craig there moving around inside the cockpit of the Perseg Ford.
21:09He's okay by the looks of things, but that car's sustained a lot of damage.
21:13What a rotten weekend it has been for the 29-year-old Kiwi.
21:17Yep.
21:18It's been very disappointing.
21:19He was expecting to do much better than this on the streets of Canberra, considering
21:22that he's had to learn his way around all the tracks before.
21:25Let's have a look at the replay, Baz.
21:26That's John Bauer.
21:27Oh!
21:28Wow!
21:29Look at that!
21:30It just touched from the back.
21:31Collision between...
21:32And what a...
21:33Wham!
21:34Oh, dear me!
21:35Collision between the Cat Ford and the Pertec Falcon.
21:39Proof once again that these tight streets of Canberra, there is just no margin for error.
21:45Well, it'll be interesting to see what the stewards judge on that.
21:49Baird could have just been getting off the gas going into pit lane, and Bauer's been
21:53caught surprised by the fact that he was losing all that speed.
21:56He got a safety car back on the track.
21:58Yeah, I could...
22:00If we could get another look at that, I kind of agree with you, Mark.
22:04That could be a good reason for it.
22:06Yeah, I think he was probably in two minds, and Bauer's been right up behind him.
22:09Craig's got off the gas, and John's driven into the back of him.
22:14Wow, what a terrible weekend.
22:15But I was saying Craig Baird was expected to do much better at Canberra.
22:18He didn't have to worry about not knowing the local tracks.
22:21But it has not been a weekend for him.
22:24Grant Denyer.
22:25Craig Baird, nasty accident.
22:26What happened?
22:27We were intending to come into the pits, and then JB just hit the back of the car, turned
22:32it around, put it straight in the wall.
22:34You okay?
22:35Yeah, no worries.
22:36The car's a little bent, but I'm fine.
22:38What about the damage of the car?
22:39Do you think it's too early to assess?
22:40Will you be back tomorrow for the tomorrow's two races?
22:42Yeah, it doesn't.
22:43It didn't hit the wall that hard.
22:44So, you know, until the boys have a look at it, I don't know.
22:48But, you know, JB's been hitting the back of people all year, so he's finally put one
22:53in the wall decently.
22:54Hard luck, Craig.
22:55Well...
22:56Yeah, I think that's a little unkind.
22:59Right, let's have a look here.
23:00Now watch.
23:01Watch the back.
23:04That's one hit.
23:06Oh, man.
23:08At the beginning there, you could see just how much the Pertec Ford was moving around
23:11on the bumps, wasn't it?
23:12Yeah, massively.
23:15Do you see the...
23:16You saw the Ford.
23:18It looked almost like it was getting out of control.
23:22The way the back end of it was fishtail and it hadn't been touched at all, was it?
23:27Well, stewards were looking closely at that one.
23:29Yeah, about that.
23:30Leave that up to them to decide.
23:31Now bear in mind, we are back underneath the safety car again.
23:34Look at the sun, look.
23:36It's...
23:37Yeah.
23:38When you get that in your eyes, it's horrible.
23:40Safety car, as I mentioned before, the first five laps are simply added to the total
23:45duration of the race.
23:47So the safety car back out again.
23:50Garth Tander and Mark Scape, one and two on the road from Lowndes and Larkham.
23:55Radisic, Perkins, Stephen Ellery and Steve Johnson doing a great job in the second of the Shell Helix
24:00Sports.
24:01Then it's Kelly, Forbes, Greg Murphy, Jason Barguana, Stephen Richards in 13th position.
24:05McLean up to 14th.
24:07Russell Engel, 15th.
24:08And Paul Wheel rounds out your top 16.
24:10We'll continue through the field for you.
24:12McDougall.
24:13John Bauer moved from the back of the grid at the beginning of this race.
24:16Has done his pit stop.
24:17Now up to 18th position.
24:19Neil Crompton remains virtually where he started.
24:21Just outside the top 20.
24:23Reid and Trapp, 22nd and 23rd.
24:25Trevor Ashby, 24th position at the moment in the second of the Optus Commodores.
24:30John Morris, Longhurst.
24:31Baird of course involved in that big crash.
24:33Donna Hurd and Jones in the back of the field.
24:40As they're about to go green on the circuit, well, John Bauer just a moment ago involved
24:44in a collision with Craig Baird is himself out of the race and extremely angry.
24:50What an amazing event this is.
24:52But this is the previous incident where Bauer and Baird made contact.
24:56Yeah, that's all the bumps there to start with while the car's rocking side to side.
25:01As Mark said during the break, you know, really the only people that know what happened
25:05is Danny and Bauer, really.
25:08We have had a total of four laps under the safety car during this race.
25:12So the duration of the race has increased, if you like, from 25 to 29 laps.
25:20So the safety car.
25:21Lights out.
25:25Going back to racing conditions.
25:27And the interesting thing when you look at this timing monitor, according to our calculations,
25:33every car from 11th and backwards in this field has already made its compulsory tyre stop.
25:39So Greg Murphy is in 11th position.
25:41So you could say that Greg Murphy is leading this race because the 10 cars in front of him all have to stop.
25:47So it should be a fascinating finish.
25:50They file underneath Commonwealth Avenue once again.
25:54Tander at the front, but yet to pit.
25:56So too Scaife and Lowndes.
25:58Larkham another to complete his pit stop.
26:00And Radisic, do we get the green this time around?
26:02Looks as though we're underway and racing again.
26:04Tander leads them line astern in the restarted GMC 400.
26:08Race one and up to turn one for the first time.
26:10The Valvoline Cummins Commodore.
26:12Three Commodores.
26:13One, two and three.
26:14It is Tander.
26:15Scaife and Lowndes.
26:16Larkham, the first of the fours.
26:17Look at them all bunched up here through turn one.
26:19This is one of the toughest parts of the circuit.
26:21Have to be the toughest street course in Australia, I reckon.
26:25It's tight.
26:26There's a lot of curves.
26:28No room for error.
26:30The boys are really finding that out this afternoon.
26:32They thought it was going to be a bit of a crash fest.
26:34Well, it's certainly proven that so far.
26:36Very, very tough conditions, particularly now when they head up into the sun.
26:41It's right in the driver's eyes.
26:43So very testing, very demanding conditions for the V8 supercar drivers.
26:48The first time on the streets of Canberra.
26:49What a great contest.
26:51Also with the sun going down, the temperature's dropping quite quickly as well.
26:55So when, if they have any more time behind the safety car,
26:58it takes a bit of time to get temperature back in your tyres.
27:01Again, as soon as you get your tyres forward, the safety car comes out again.
27:04Very interesting to watch these pit stops when these top ten cars come into the pits.
27:09Look at Scaifey now.
27:11You're watching for that move again, aren't you, just in case?
27:13I mean, he did it so well when he got past Seton earlier in this race.
27:18But I've got to say that Tander, you know, both times we've had a stop.
27:22Tander's pulled out the gap again, isn't he?
27:24Yeah, he's showing plenty of speed.
27:26The youngster was in all sorts of trouble earlier in the week.
27:28But as you said before, Baz, the team knocked the car into shape very effectively.
27:32But he's good, you know, that's, he's good like that Tander, you know.
27:36He gets the same thing that's in Valley.
27:40They were in strife and then all of a sudden when it came to the crunch, you know, that thing sorted out.
27:45When you look at it, if this race continues under green flag.
27:47Oh, is he coming in now? Yes, Tander's coming in.
27:50Well, we just saw a very similar incident.
27:52Larcombe in behind him.
27:53Exactly what happened with Vow and Baird.
27:55Larry's coming in so too.
27:57Look at them all now.
27:58This is pit stop central.
27:59Rodney Forbes coming in.
28:01So, around about five of the top ten cars now opting to do their pit stops.
28:06This is Garth Tander.
28:07The Valvoline Cummins Commodore team on the spot.
28:11All of Gary Rogers' boys further down the pit.
28:14Larcombe.
28:15Rodney Forbes is in as well.
28:16There might be some people at home wondering why he took the tyre off and put it back on again.
28:19Under the rules, you can do that, but you have to take the wheel off, put it flat on the ground and put it back on the hull.
28:25So, obviously, the tyre condition of Tander's car is fine.
28:28Continuing these nice, hot, roaded tyres.
28:31I tell you, I reckon his team mate's a better position at the moment.
28:34Jason Barguanis behind Greg Murphy.
28:36He's already fitted.
28:37Look at this.
28:38This is Mark Larcombe.
28:39He's gotten out ahead of Garth Tander.
28:41So, the minor Tander team, that's a brilliant performance in the pits.
28:45And it just shows you how much teamwork can really help you in a situation like this.
28:49It is tight around the streets of Canberra and difficult to pass.
28:52How much has that helped Mark Larcombe?
28:54Yeah, it's been a huge boost.
28:55Greg Murphy's the man I'm watching at the moment.
28:58He has already fitted.
29:00He's going to be in position to leapfrog when these final cars come in.
29:03Radisic, Tander, has already fitted.
29:06So, it's Radisic, Lowndes and Scaife, by our reckoning, are the only three that haven't pitted yet.
29:10We're understanding from the pits that the HRT boys may be standing by for a stop.
29:14So, we'll keep a close eye on that for you.
29:16I hope their fingers crossed they get another yellow flag.
29:19Look at the sun.
29:20Look at that.
29:21Look at that.
29:22And that is actually what it's like.
29:23It's not only the camera and the screen it does, right?
29:25It's a horrible thing.
29:27I apologise for a bit of that break up on our in-car cameras.
29:32That's because the car goes under the bridge.
29:35It breaks the signal.
29:36The radio linked to our chopper.
29:38So, just the nature of this circuit.
29:40They're going in and out of tunnels, up and down hills.
29:42Very, very difficult circuit.
29:44Here's Scaife.
29:45In for his compulsory tyre stop.
29:48Lowndes and Radisic, the only men remaining.
29:51So, have they played the tactical card correct?
29:54The Holden Racing team doing the same thing, Mark, that you were talking about before.
29:57Taking the tyres off, laying them flat on the ground.
30:0060K.
30:01Makes off 60K.
30:02Sticking strictly to the pit lane speed limit.
30:04And then they're putting those...
30:05Back with the tire on the rear tyres, buddy.
30:07And that's exactly what I was going to make the point about.
30:09They are using the heat in those tyres.
30:10They don't want to put fresh rubber on because it's too cold, possibly, Mark.
30:13Particularly at this stage in the afternoon.
30:14Yeah, no doubt.
30:15Well, it's a pretty low speed circuit.
30:17A pretty low friction surface.
30:19It's not too hard on tyres around here.
30:21So, guys would be...
30:23The left rear probably cops the most caning.
30:25Scaife now back into the action.
30:29And if you're a little bit confused at home, bear with us, folks.
30:32Because in a couple of laps, by the time these timing monitors trip up,
30:35we have true track position for these guys.
30:37We know that Craig Lowndes and Paul Radisic are the only two cars remaining
30:41that haven't stopped.
30:42Scaife back out in 21st position.
30:45Boy, oh boy.
30:48So, the tactics and the strategy which we talk so much about
30:52are now really starting to play a big part in this race.
30:56As you ride with Paul Radisic, we understand from pit lane
30:59that the Dick Johnson Racing team are standing by.
31:02Well, they're going to have to because the pit window...
31:04I'm in this lap. I'm in this lap.
31:05I'm in this lap.
31:06Okay, in this lap.
31:07I'm in this lap.
31:08Okay, Radisic telling the team he's coming in this lap.
31:10They've got to be in before the end of lap 16.
31:14The other point he made there, Mark, was tyres seem okay.
31:17So, we understand that the team are putting away those tyres.
31:19They're going to do the same thing that HRT and a lot of others have done.
31:23Take those tyres off, pop them straight on the ground
31:25and bolt them straight back on.
31:26Wow, it's...
31:27Here he goes, fast pit entry.
31:29Here comes Craig Lowndes.
31:30And Paul Radisic coming in too.
31:32Steven Johnson still has a pit.
31:34Well, this will be the last of the compulsory tyre changes.
31:37There's fresh rubber going onto Lowndes' car.
31:40Mmm.
31:41There's all sorts of tactics at play here.
31:43Grant Denya's on the spot.
31:45Craig Lowndes came in super hot in here.
31:47He wants a quick stop.
31:48He came in here and locked it all up.
31:50Sidewards into pit lane.
31:51And they changed all four tyres here.
31:53So, different to what Scopey is doing.
31:55But a sensational stop here by the HRT guys.
31:58Well, I've just heard it as a stop-go penalty too
32:01for Mick Donaghan, car 50, the TDK Ultratune machine.
32:05And all sorts of drama is up and down pit lane.
32:09Radisic back into the action.
32:11Do you know Tander's stop was five seconds slower than seconds?
32:14I thought Tander's stop seemed like he was in there forever.
32:20Now, Steven Johnson will inherit the lead all but briefly.
32:24I think he has yet to do his pit stop as well.
32:26And look where Greg Murphy is placed at the moment.
32:29Fourth on the road in the Kmart Commodore.
32:31Look, he's behind Murphy.
32:32Jason Bargwana is splitting the Kmart duo.
32:35It's Greg Murphy, Jason Bargwana, Steven Richards, Cameron McClain.
32:40So, there's some real...
32:42We always expected there was going to be some surprises on the streets.
32:45And there's McClain in the Greenfield Mowers Falcon.
32:47Just back there in the middle of that pack.
32:49Russell Ingalls there too, Mark.
32:51What a rotten weekend he has had so far.
32:53They haven't yet come the race.
32:54Well, all falling into place.
32:56Played the right card coming into pit early.
32:58What these teams have come in and pitted late,
33:00they'll be just crossing their fingers for another safety car period
33:03so they can bunch this field up and they'll close down the track position they've lost
33:07as a result of pitting under Green.
33:09Possibly Steven Johnson may pit this time around.
33:13Just a reminder, if you're wondering at home why the cars aren't pitting under a safety car,
33:16you are no longer allowed to do that.
33:18The pits are closed. Here comes Steven Johnson.
33:20This will be the last of the cars to make his compulsory stop.
33:26The team talking to Steve.
33:27Take it slow, take it slow.
33:28If you speed down pit lane these days, you get a stop-go penalty.
33:31It's a very expensive mistake to make.
33:33Once this stop has been completed, folks, we will recap the positions for you
33:37so you know exactly where everybody stands.
33:40The Dick Johnson Racing boys on the spot.
33:43They are going for fresh rubber by the looks of things.
33:45They have elected with this car not to put the warmer rubber back on.
33:48Well, that's an interesting choice.
33:50Our new race leader is Greg Murphy.
33:52That was well picked, Mark.
33:54Jason Bargwana in second position.
33:57Steven Richards in third.
33:58Cameron McLean will be in fourth.
34:00Russell Ling will be in fifth.
34:01Wow, what a fight.
34:02Look at Paul Wheel in the K&J thermal machine.
34:06This will be his best performance so far if he can bring this one home.
34:09He's in seventh.
34:10Dougal McDougal in eighth.
34:11Mark Poole, John Faulkner.
34:12Look at the variety in that top ten.
34:13Quite unbelievable.
34:14Neil Crompton as well is in eleventh position in the second
34:17of the Ford Tickfoot Racing Falcons.
34:20He started outside the top 20.
34:23So what a change of circumstances in this race
34:26and this team has read it beautifully.
34:29There's Bargwana the meat in the Kmart sandwich.
34:31Cameron McLean.
34:32He has had an absolutely shocking season, the Queenslander.
34:35But he says he loves these street circuits.
34:37He's been rubbing his hands together, waiting to get down here for weeks
34:39because he thought he'd perform strongly.
34:41Well, he's certainly proving that now.
34:42He's in fourth position.
34:44But I tell you, he was Houdini in the qualifying thing in the top 15 shootout.
34:48He's keeping it off the wall.
34:50Maybe luck's riding with him this weekend.
34:53So Greg Murphy, the Kiwi, eighth in the Shell Championship Series for 2000.
34:59It's Todd Kelly.
35:01And where the wheel by the Shell car is Stephen Johnson.
35:05Probably got slightly cooler tyres on the car.
35:08It's going to take him a couple of laps to get that up to speed.
35:11I was watching Stephen Johnson's car.
35:13It doesn't handle anywhere near like Rannisic's thing does.
35:16It must be set up very, very differently.
35:19It just seems all over the show.
35:22We'll recap them for you, folks.
35:24Murphy is your leader.
35:25Jason Barguana, Stephen Richards in the second of the Kmart Commodores.
35:29We have two Kmart Commodores in the top three.
35:31That is fantastic.
35:32McLean up to fourth.
35:33Our reigning privateers champion, Russell Englefitt.
35:36Paul Weill in the K&J Radiators Falcon is up to sixth.
35:40Dougal McDougal in the Pepsi Commodore.
35:42Seventh, Mark Poole in the John Deere Commodore.
35:44Eighth, John Faulkner ninth.
35:46And Neil Crompton completes the top ten.
35:48Well, this is a very important day for Russell Engle
35:50when you consider the four cars ahead of him on the track.
35:53Willian in strong contention for the championship at the moment.
35:56Engle now fifth, fighting his way back in the points.
35:58There he is, just out of shot.
35:59How much is that going to help him?
36:01Different colour car if you don't recognise it.
36:03He's got a sort of a greeny, bluey car this weekend.
36:07So you'll see Engle later on if you don't recognise that colour scheme.
36:11This is looking out the back of the Mitre 10 Falcon.
36:16I don't think I've ever heard Mark Larkham so happy with his car.
36:21He's saying that sort of things, you know, they've got it really sorted out now.
36:25They've found out that all their suspension settings,
36:27when they changed the tyres,
36:29they've got it under control now.
36:31And you'd have to say it looks that way.
36:33This is the battle just to stay inside the top 20.
36:36This is the battle for 19th position.
36:38Mark Larkham and Garth Tander, a result of having to go in for those stops.
36:42It's really waiting now for another safety car period.
36:50It will be critical if these guys are going to get much closer to those leaders at the moment.
36:55Bear in mind too, folks, that we have two more races to come your way this weekend.
36:59A full reverse grid on the morning.
37:0225 laps followed by a 50 lapper in the afternoon with a compulsory fuel and tyre stop.
37:06And the man, you can see on the right hand side there, Brad Jones runs stone motherless last.
37:10We believe at the moment that could put him on pole for tomorrow's reverse grid.
37:14Yeah, but keep in mind though, Cleveland at the home may be wondering that's an advantage.
37:18The starting positions for the all-important double point 50 lapper tomorrow afternoon.
37:22Oh, look at this, up the inside goes Garth Tander.
37:24He's going to go side by side with the minor 10-40.
37:27He's got a good run out of that corner.
37:28He'll lead down toward turn one.
37:30It looks like Larkham's thing is slow, slow drastically.
37:34What I was going to say though, the starting grid for the all-important double point final race
37:38is determined by your finishing position or your results from race one and race two.
37:42The incentive there is you've got to do as well as you possibly can in both of these two 25 lappers.
37:47Yeah, there's something wrong with Larkham's car.
37:49Look at the amount of ground he's lost on Tander in just no time at all.
37:54So the order at the moment, Greg Murphy, Jason Barguana with 10 laps remaining,
37:58Steven Richards in third, Cameron McLean still in fourth, Russell Engel, the enforcer in fifth.
38:02That's wheel, McDougal, Mark Poole, John Faulkner, Neil Crofton now climbs into the top ten with Steve Reid,
38:09a Sydneysider, just outside the top ten and eleventh position.
38:12Our big, clear and simple telemetry shows you the way with Mark Larkham in the Mitre 10 forward
38:18as he works his way down through State Circle, the fastest part of the circuit.
38:22They top around 240 kilometres an hour here, hard under brakes, back down through the gearbox.
38:27They use first gear in a variety of places here, about three times or more around the circuit,
38:33which is quite a surprise, but really pull quite quickly out of some of the corners,
38:37like turn one and then short shift up through second and third gear.
38:41Markham now can see the sunlight in his eyes through that roundabout, down along through Flynn Place,
38:49up again through the gearbox, this will bring him down to this temporary chicane that's been made for them,
38:54where we saw Mark Skate overtake Glenn's seat from before, into the right-hander.
38:58They tend to climb the kerbs here and get up onto two...
39:00Oh, that's Tony Longos!
39:02Tony Longos, how lucky!
39:05Oh, dear me!
39:09Tony Longos gets back into the action, sitting right back there in eight-hand position.
39:14Boy.
39:15I think that was very, very close.
39:16It's heart-in-the-mouth Russ, what about them?
39:18Yeah, action's coming thick and fast.
39:21Cameron McLean, it's clear in fourth position, Russell Engel in fifth.
39:24Good battle.
39:26Burring right up and down through the field.
39:28Here's the rat, Paul Radisic.
39:29After that stop, dropped him right down the order.
39:32He's currently in 20th position, driving hard, trying to make up as many positions as possible.
39:36Let's have a look at this on the Shell Helix Replay, Baz.
39:38Oh, yeah, it just looks, got on it and then back end came round.
39:43Whoa!
39:44How close was that?
39:45Oh, mate!
39:46I think, look, look at the back end of the left-hand rear corner there.
39:50It looks like there was...
39:51Let's have a look at this.
39:52Oh, he did get a nudge too!
39:53Oh, he did?
39:54From Lowndes, yeah.
39:55Yeah, that's why I could see the...
39:57Yeah, got a big shove.
39:59...the little tap.
40:00I thought he initially locked it up, but it was definitely a...
40:03So the two Red Barons on the march, trying to make up as many positions as possible before
40:08this race finishes.
40:10We'll check them out for you, folks.
40:12Greg Murphy leads the way in the Kmart Racing Commodore from Jason Barguana.
40:16He did well at Adelaide and looks like doing well again here on the streets of Canberra.
40:20Steven Richards third, McLean fourth, Russell Ingle.
40:23That is much-needed valuable points in fifth.
40:26Crompton, Faulkner, Reid, Ashby, Seaton, Morris, Tratt and Lowndes.
40:30Take you back to the top 16.
40:32Back with more in a moment.
40:38We're still racing one of three in the GMC 400.
40:42And the story of this first race, and we said at the top of the program that no-one was really certain
40:47how their driving skills and strategies would pay off here on the streets of Canberra.
40:50But the early drivers to pit are really reaping the benefits here
40:54in the latter stages of this event.
40:56Greg Murphy from Jason Barguana and Steven Richards.
40:59Cameron McLean and Russell Ingle make up the top five.
41:02But Paul Wheeler, Dougal McDougal and Mark Poole.
41:05Great to see them in the top eight with Crompton in ninth.
41:08And Steve Reid, of course, teammate of Trevor Ashby,
41:11two of the great privateers in this series.
41:13Steve Reid is in tenth.
41:14Look at this fantastic battle for second position.
41:16It involves Jason Barguana.
41:18It involves Steven Richards, Cameron McLean and Russell Ingle,
41:21the enforcer wearing that new cast roll wall paint only for this weekend.
41:26He'll go back to the traditional silver colours
41:28at the next round of the Shell Championship Series.
41:31And a new face, a new speed for Russell Ingle at Canberra.
41:36There he is up behind Cameron McLean.
41:37We're on board as he tries to track down the superbly performing Falcon of Cameron McLean.
41:45We haven't seen anything like this sort of speed from this car all year.
41:48And all of a sudden, when the gloves are off, on the tight and narrow streets with concrete walls either side,
41:54this Queenslander absolutely loves this place.
41:57What a Herculean fight back from McLean when you consider that he had that crash during the top 15 shootout this morning.
42:03So he has recovered very, very well.
42:04We should also pay credit to Gary Dumbrell's team, Kmart Racing.
42:09It seems as though when it comes to endurance mode, these guys are really, really switched on.
42:15Bathurst last year, Steven Richards and Greg Murphy teamed up to win it.
42:20And the Adelaide 500, we saw a strong showing from them.
42:25Now we're here at Canberra.
42:26Very important weekend for Jason Bargwana too.
42:29He's really been overshadowed by his teammate Garth Tander this year.
42:33The 28 year old, he's a real fighter and a street fighter too.
42:38We saw an outstanding drive for Bargwana in the Adelaide 500 when he hounded Markscape all the way through the spray there.
42:43Oh, and his own teammate as well, Garth Tander.
42:45He was just on a barnstorming run, Jason Bargwana.
42:48If you've just joined us, folks, we are in the latter stages of race one of the GMC 400.
42:52An action packed calendar coming your way this weekend here on the streets of Canberra.
42:56Greg Murphy leads the way from this man, Jason Bargwana tucked in behind him.
43:00Steven Richards, Greg Murphy's teammate.
43:02Then it's McLean, the Queenslander being hounded by Russell Ingle in the Castrol Commodore.
43:08We saw there the Aussie male Falcon limping its way around the circuit.
43:12That's Brad Jones, who at the moment is right at the back of the packet,
43:17probably looking good for tomorrow's reverse grid race.
43:20Impressive stuff from Cameron McLean, the 32 year old Queenslander.
43:24He will team up with Dick Johnson Racing in the two endurance races later in the year.
43:29This is a true indication of the man's talent when it all comes together for him.
43:34He's right in the thick of this battle under maximum pressure from Russell Ingle in the Castrol Commodore.
43:41former Australian Sport Sedan champion.
43:44Privateer's champion in both Super Touring and V8 Supercars.
43:47Had a very, very difficult this year.
43:49Finds himself back 26th in the points.
43:52And he's had a very, very tough season in this new AU Falcon.
43:56The sponsor Greenfield Mowers came on board back in the Sport Sedan days,
44:01but they used to sponsor, believe it or not, Mower Racing.
44:04So, nowadays, they're backing Cameron McLean.
44:09As they come over the start-finish line once again,
44:11Russell is so close to the back of Cameron McLean's car.
44:14Under pressure, McLean locks the inside left.
44:17Russell Ingle lights a blaze in the Castrol Commodore all over the back of him.
44:21The Enforcer doing what he does best as we count down towards the finish of race one of the GMC 400.
44:27Up through Queen Victoria Terrace, monstering the curves.
44:31Barkwana second.
44:32Richards third.
44:33McLean fourth.
44:34And Russell Ingle all over the back.
44:35Russell looking for a move.
44:36He can't do it.
44:37McLean shuts the door.
44:38Down into the right-hander that brings you on to Kings Avenue.
44:41But Ingle is right there with him like a magnet.
44:44This is very impressive stuff.
44:45Look at Ingle trying to get the power down.
44:47600 horsepower.
44:48The road falls off camera.
44:49Throws the tail of the car into the concrete wall.
44:51Ingle is driving very, very hard.
44:53But McLean is proving a match for the South Australian.
44:58Out of Kings Avenue.
44:59Up State Circle.
45:00Round the front of Parliament House.
45:01Sun blaring in their eyes.
45:03Look at that blinding sun rays through the helmets.
45:06And they break hard at the end of State Circle for Turn 11.
45:09Up past the Chinese Embassy.
45:11Second gear.
45:12Maybe first gear for some of them.
45:14Thundering down Flindride.
45:15The order still.
45:16Greg Murphy.
45:17Jason Barguana.
45:18Steven Richards.
45:19This is the battle for fourth position between Cameron McLean and Russell Ingle.
45:2532 years of age.
45:27Now based up on the Gold Coast.
45:3018 Shell Championship starts.
45:32The best result of seven.
45:33But he was outstanding in the X-Tick Johnson Racing Falcon last year in the Privateers Division.
45:38Had a great season-long fight with Rodney Forbes but ultimately prevailed.
45:41And the fact that Dick Johnson's taking him on board I think is a pretty good indication of his pedigree.
45:47It certainly is.
45:48We've got five laps remaining in this one.
45:51Can Russell Ingle find his way past the Greenfields?
45:54Boas Ford.
45:55Cameron McLean will be making that as wide as a bulldozer at the moment.
46:00McLean inherited or purchased this car from Paul Wheel.
46:05The KNJ Radiators outfit.
46:06This was their car from last year.
46:08And Cameron events.
46:09They've taken a bit of time to get used to the differences between the EL Falcon and the AU.
46:14But now starting to show the sort of mouse that you would expect from this team.
46:18The Greenfield mowers forward.
46:19Being hounded by Ingle.
46:20They swing from here.
46:21Nice and close to our camera.
46:22And so close to the wall.
46:24Ingle.
46:25Out after McLean.
46:26How good are these points going to be too for the guys in front.
46:29Greg Murphy.
46:30Jason Bargwana.
46:31Steven Richards.
46:32Cameron McLean.
46:33All blokes.
46:34Who are a little bit further down in the points than they'd like to be.
46:37Murphy currently 8th.
46:39Jason Bargwana 13th.
46:40Look at this Russell.
46:41Down the inside.
46:42Russell that's a nice move.
46:44He's stuck right on the back bumper bar of McLean.
46:47Got a good run.
46:48Could have been a surrender too from Cameron.
46:49The way that car was sliding around.
46:51He might be out of tyres.
46:52He's really been giving it.
46:54Look at the amount of ground that Russell Ingle now has put on McLean.
46:58As they sweep through State Circle that time.
47:01Down Flynn Drive once again.
47:03Very demanding territory for the vehicle.
47:05Look at McLean.
47:06He's got a puncture.
47:07He's got a puncture mark.
47:08Yep.
47:09For him to surrender like that.
47:10There must have been something wrong with the car.
47:12It was a flat tyre.
47:13And it is the left rear that cops the most work around this circuit.
47:17Well that is rotten luck for the Queenslander.
47:19Just when things were looking so good we are on the run.
47:21Home only a handful of laps left to go.
47:23And that's very costly for McLean.
47:27Yeah well he has put on an outstanding show though.
47:30Haven't seen that sort of pace.
47:32He was very impressive in the opening Adelaide 500 race last year.
47:35And he finished fifth in one of the heats.
47:37Look at this in the Shell Helix replay.
47:39And watch him come out here.
47:40He does actually hit the wall.
47:42I think it had blown before then.
47:43Yep.
47:44Tire going well and truly flat by the time he swung onto Flynn Drive.
47:49He's limped it back to the pits.
47:50There he is now.
47:51Whoa.
47:52Look at him.
47:53That's very difficult to control too.
47:54Hope he can get back into the pit lane without any confusion.
47:57Meanwhile we're on board with Glenn Seek.
48:00As he tries to fight his way back to this field.
48:03He's in 13th position at the moment.
48:05So tactics really came into play this afternoon.
48:08And things really fell under that for the Kmart team.
48:11Greg Murphy and Steven Richards running first and third.
48:14With Jason Barguana who obviously adopted a different strategy to his teammate Garth Tander.
48:19He pulled the right rein today.
48:20He's in second position.
48:21What about the performance of both of the Octus Commodores?
48:24You've got to give it to Wally Storey and the boys.
48:26Trevor Ashby sits in 11th.
48:28Steve Reid in 8th.
48:29That is fantastic.
48:30For the privateers the Landsvale smash outfit from Sydney.
48:33Mark Poole up to 7th as well.
48:36And McDougal.
48:37Dougal McDougal sits in 6th place in the Pepsi Commodore.
48:40Full wheel fit.
48:41This is remarkable.
48:43Yeah well they always said it was going to be an upset result.
48:46You can see from qualifying that there are a few names you don't normally see up that high up in the grid.
48:51And that has followed through in the race too.
48:53Tremendous stuff.
48:54Now tomorrow when we go a full reverse grid.
48:57The finishing order for this race will be reversed.
49:00Oh wow!
49:01That's Garth Tander.
49:02He really whacked it hard didn't he?
49:05Now he has done a lot of damage to that car.
49:07He's hit that wall very hard.
49:09Just slow it down and get it back to the pit until we have a good look at it.
49:12And we'll try and get you back out.
49:13Now slow it down and don't do any more damage.
49:15Well, calming words of advice from the team.
49:19Just bring it back here.
49:20Let us have a look at it.
49:21Don't throw it into the wall again.
49:23So Garth Tander, after being just incredible how you can go from the top to the bottom so quickly.
49:29He's done quite a bit of damage to the rear end.
49:31He's broken the rear axle housing.
49:32Yep.
49:33The rear axle has broken away from its locating links.
49:36It's sliding laterally across the car.
49:38Let's have a look at the Shell Helix repo.
49:39Look how hard he hits this wall.
49:41Bang!
49:42And he has broken the locating links for that rear axle.
49:46It's floating around under the car.
49:47There's no way he can continue to drive that.
49:49He's got to limp it back to the pits.
49:52Three laps to go, Mark.
49:54Very, very expensive, costly mistake.
49:56Certainly was.
49:57Now all this guy has to do.
49:59A 27-year-old Kiwi who now bases himself out of Melbourne.
50:03Twice a winner at Mount Panorama.
50:05Did it last year with his teammate Stephen Richards.
50:07His first ever in 1996 with Craig Lowndes.
50:11In those days it was with the Holden Racing Team.
50:13They also have taken victory at the Sandown 500.
50:16Murph, incredible credentials.
50:18Former factory Audi Super Touring driver.
50:21Has campaigned successfully in Formula Holden.
50:24And really has been one of the stars of V8 Supercar racing
50:28since he arrived here in Australia.
50:30He leads this race.
50:31This is another great day, isn't it?
50:32It certainly is.
50:33Dougal McDougal.
50:35Car run out of the Larry Perkins garage.
50:39And Dougal is doing an outstanding job.
50:41He's in sixth position at the moment.
50:4427-year-old from Melbourne.
50:47Multiple Australian, or state karting champion, I should say,
50:50in his early days.
50:51He also won the Australian Formula Ford Festival back in 1994
50:54and represented Australia in the Nations Cup.
50:56But he really has struggled in V8 Supercar to crack into that top ten.
51:00Well, he's right in the thick of it now.
51:02Right up there in sixth position.
51:05What an outstanding job.
51:06Fantastic, isn't it?
51:07I mean, you consider that massive rollover he had last year at Phillip Island.
51:11And the Pepsi Commodore driver is doing exceptionally well here today.
51:15So too Paul Weill there.
51:17That is a marvellous effort for the young Queenslander.
51:20Look at the battle behind him.
51:21Here comes another.
51:22Mark Poole in the John Deere Commodore.
51:24He's got Steve Reid behind him.
51:25And Neil Crompton fighting back from a difficult start to the race.
51:30Crompton finds himself in ninth position.
51:35What a topsy-turvy race.
51:37Unbelievable.
51:38Who would ever have thought you would have seen this sort of result in terms of a top ten?
51:41Well, it's just fantastic.
51:42I mean, you really want to see as many different winners,
51:45as many different cars and colours and sponsors battling for the lead of these races.
51:49It's really turned it on in Canberra this afternoon.
51:51And this is a fabulous start to the weekend.
51:55Steven Richards sporting some of the scars.
51:58A bent bonnet from an altercation very early in this race.
52:02Has survived to hang on to third place at this stage.
52:05Can Russell Ingle, with under two laps remaining,
52:08get up onto the podium for race one?
52:12Steven Richards in 16th place in the Shell Championship Series at the moment.
52:16Only 223 points.
52:18This weekend will be critical if he wants to climb further up the points ladder.
52:23And there's Garth Tander.
52:25He looks like he must have come into the pits.
52:28He's gone out again.
52:29But that car is in serious trouble.
52:32One lap remaining.
52:33Can he limp it around and be qualified as a finisher?
52:36Well, one positive point from all that is...
52:40He will start from pole position tomorrow if he is the last finisher.
52:43Now, bear in mind...
52:44Yeah, exactly right, Mark.
52:46There's no points involved.
52:49No championship points for finishing that far down.
52:53He's got to keep it out there and just keep limping it around.
52:56Oh, fascinating battle.
52:57Steven Richards under all sorts of pressure from Russell Ingle, the enforcer.
53:02And Bargwana is resisting quite well as these two apply the thumbscrews.
53:08Murphy now some nine seconds up the road from this battle for second.
53:12So Burst, home and hose if he can keep it up the concrete walls.
53:15Ten seconds now.
53:16So he's pumping out that lead as these three really cut each other up in this battle for second.
53:20Jason Bargwana in full defence mode.
53:22One lap remaining.
53:23Less than 3.9 kilometres of camera to go for Jason Bargwana.
53:28And he'll take a very healthy points haul from this race.
53:31He should be in the thick of things all weekend.
53:34Well, Bargwana, we saw how elated he was after his efforts in the second leg or second race, if you like.
53:40The Adelaide 500 is superbly there.
53:42And this will do his confidence no end of good.
53:45The talented youngster, a former stockbroker, campaigned in Formula Fords, Formula Vs and Formula Holdens.
53:50Stepped up a couple of years ago to the V8 supercars that has been doing well under the tutelage of Gary Rogers.
53:56This man though, what a sensational effort from the Kmart racing team.
54:01Gary Dunbrell, he has two cars at the moment in the top three.
54:04Greg Murphy leading the way by a handsome margin.
54:08Ten seconds to this battle for second place.
54:11Bargwana sweeps through.
54:13State circle for the final time.
54:15Commodore round at the moment.
54:16Greg Murphy, Jason Bargwana, Steven Richards, Russell Engel.
54:19Commodores fill the top four positions.
54:21The first forward four wheel in the K&J Thermal Falcon.
54:24He's having a great day in Canberra.
54:26He's in fifth.
54:27Here is car 12.
54:28Look at that.
54:29That is the stricken entry of Garth Tander.
54:30Desperately trying to make it to the finish line.
54:32And hopefully starting off the front row of the grid or thereabouts.
54:35Up the front for tomorrow's reverse grid.
54:37Look at this guy.
54:38Greg Murphy.
54:39The crowd here in Canberra at the completion of race one.
54:42There's still another two to go tomorrow.
54:44Are on their feet.
54:45The 27 year old Kiwi will bring it home for Kmart racing.
54:48And to the elation of Gary Dunbrell and their team.
54:51Greg Murphy takes out race one of the TMC 400.
54:55Yeah, you can see the team there.
54:56Haven't they worked hard for that?
54:57There's Gary Dunbrell.
54:58Team owner.
55:00And Greg Murphy, as you can hear, absolutely elated.
55:05He's had a very, very difficult build up for this race.
55:08All sorts of problems in qualifying.
55:10Mechanical drama slowing him down.
55:12Let's go down to Grant, don't you?
55:14Well, Gary Dunbrell, your first race win since Bathurst last year.
55:18This must feel good.
55:19Well, I've got to say, thanks to Kmart.
55:21And Murph drove a fantastic race.
55:23You know, he was qualified a bit back further than we thought.
55:26But, you know, Murphy drove it through.
55:28And a pit stop strategy work.
55:29And again, you know, the Kmart Commodore has come through and won the race.
55:33This must be good for him.
55:34Because he's been particularly down on himself lately
55:36because of his recent performances.
55:37Well, Murph has, you know.
55:38And he's sort of struggled during the year.
55:40And he's very tough on himself.
55:41But it's the first Kmart win.
55:42And hopefully it'll be the only one for him anymore to come.
55:45Guess what?
55:46You've got to do it from the back tomorrow.
55:47Well, yeah, that's going to be a struggle.
55:48But, you know, just winning the race there is worth it.
55:51Thank you very much.
55:52Well done.
55:53Great, thanks.
55:54You could hear just how excited Greg Murphy was after that race victory.
55:57Very, very pleased.
55:59He's a guy who drives with enormous heart, doesn't he, Murphy?
56:02You give him a good car and he will drive the wheels off.
56:05And if the car's not that great, he loses enthusiasm.
56:07He really is one of those drivers you've got to keep on the boil.
56:10Keep putting good cars underneath him and he'll really do the business.
56:14And he showed it there.
56:15Barg's pulling up alongside him there too to congratulate him too.
56:18That's a nice gesture.
56:19Yeah, fantastic effort by the Kiwi and Jason Bargwana too.
56:24The nuggety 28-year-old from Como in New South Wales.
56:28It's been a tough season.
56:30As I said, been in the shadow of his teammate Garth Tander recently.
56:33But he pulled the right car today.
56:35He went in, pitted early.
56:37Tander left it late and it really did fall in.
56:39Barg won his lap.
56:40He drove very, very well.
56:41Puts him in second position.
56:42So he'll start alongside Murphy from the back row of the grid tomorrow in the full reverse grid.
56:47The first time we've seen it in V8 supercar racing should be absolute thriller.
56:51When we talked to Greg Murphy and Steven Richards and various members of the Kmart racing team in the lead up to today's first race.
56:58I spoke about how they felt they were behind the eight ball or weren't as far up the ladder if you like in terms of getting the set up and everything on these cars right.
57:06Boy oh boy.
57:07From a strategy point of view they had it absolutely dead right.
57:11And it's played right into the hands of both Murph and Steven Richards.
57:15One and three for the Kmart Commodores.
57:18Another 60 points onto his tally.
57:20And that won't hurt his championship chase.
57:22Kmart Commodores have not had a good start to the season.
57:25The cars have been very, very slow in qualifying.
57:27That's been the problem in the sprint races.
57:29The car just does not gain a lot of speed when they put fresh tyres on it.
57:33But in the Enduros they are so strong.
57:36Greg Murphy the winner.
57:37Jason Bargwana.
57:389.7 seconds down the road.
57:40So that was a dominant win for Murph.
57:42No more caution flag periods in that run to the flag.
57:44Steven Richards third.
57:45Russell Engel.
57:46Strong performance from the Enforcer in fourth.
57:48Paul Wheel.
57:49The first of the forwards.
57:50And look at that.
57:51Holdens all the way through that top eight.
57:53Paul Wheel the only Blue Oval representative there.
57:56Dougal McDougal.
57:57Strong performance in the Pepsi car.
57:58Mark Paul he'd be happy too.
57:59And Steve Reid.
58:00The Sydney privateer.
58:01Great job.
58:02Further back Neil Compton who hasn't had a great weekend.
58:05Works his way up from 20th to 9th.
58:07So that's a great event.
58:08Ashby.
58:0910th place.
58:10Faulkner.
58:11Seaton.
58:12Craig Lowndes has recovered for 13th.
58:13Their pit strategy not going quite the way they wanted.
58:16Teammate Mark Scaife in 14th.
58:17And Radisic another I guess perhaps problems there for that team in terms of pit strategy as well.
58:22Well when you look at those times.
58:23Look at Radisic.
58:2439 seconds behind the race leader.
58:26I mean just the way the cards fall in this race.
58:29If you.
58:30If you jag your strategy right.
58:31It's just incredible where it can put you on the track.
58:33Mark Larkham.
58:3417th.
58:35Tony Longhurst.
58:36We saw him have a spin.
58:37But a great result for this man.
58:39Greg Murphy.
58:40One of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet.
58:41The 27 year old from Hastings in New Zealand.
58:44And first victory for the Cayman Holms.
58:46Let's go to Bears.
58:47Yeah.
58:48The most surprised person is you Murph.
58:50And after talking to you this morning.
58:51Oh you're not wrong Barry.
58:52I was pretty dejected this morning.
58:53You know.
58:54I mean this is to the guys.
58:56I mean what an awesome.
58:57Awesome job.
58:58And Andy picked the strategy before he went out.
59:00He said lap two.
59:01And I'm trucking around there at 11th.
59:02I'm going are you sure you want me to come in?
59:04Man.
59:05He picked it right.
59:06I just.
59:07I'm.
59:08Yeah.
59:09I can't believe it mate.
59:10Yesterday we did 7 laps practice before qualifying.
59:12And we were struggling.
59:14So um.
59:15Awesome call on the pit stops by the boys.
59:17And there you go.
59:18Happy chappy now.
59:19Now we start from the back.
59:21What's going on there?
59:22Great.
59:23Well done Greg.
59:24Cheers.
59:25Well Greg Murphy will go now.
59:26Into the history books.
59:27His name is etched in the motorsport records.
59:29As the first ever winner.
59:31Of a V8 supercar race around the streets.
59:33Of the nation's capital.
59:34Back in a moment.
