00:00a lot of excitement at Network 10 about some big event TV in 2015 in particular the return of the
00:14V8 Supercar Championship Series for our coverage of those races this weekend really pleased to be
00:19joined by the four-time Bathurst winner Greg Murphy and right now in this pit lane a little
00:23bit of angst about the whole rolling starts issue yeah there was there was a few safety
00:26car restarts at Adelaide that didn't quite go to plan and this weekend for the first time
00:30the start of the races is going to be a rolling start so I know from the driver's briefing earlier
00:35on there was a lot of questions being asked by many many drivers about the starts and I don't
00:40know if all their questions got answers that they were looking for all right we'll let our cameraman
00:44in on this one here great that we've stopped at the Brad Jones racing team Jason Bright's team BAC
00:49Commodore big rollover at Clipsill unbelievable job by this team to get here yeah I mean it was a
00:54spectacular crash quite a bit of damage obviously the driver came through unscathed which was
00:58fantastic rebuild brand spanking new car they were after a new name for this chassis and luckily for
01:04a one nine-year-old from Wangaratta young Brody his name was chosen to name the new car for Jason
01:10Bright he donated $10.20 of his own money his pocket money to the rebuild process now shock horror there's
01:16been some rumblings in the sport about the whole issue of parody and it comes after the brilliant V8 debut
01:22a fortnight ago of Volvo in this sport it was terrific wasn't it yeah it was and I think it
01:27was a little bit unexpected by many teams to see the speed of this car out out of the box GRM did a
01:32great job last year with the cars they had Scott McLaughlin obviously very competitive last year
01:36and got his got his first win in the championship but you know the speed of this car the way it showed
01:40podium in its first race meeting was a bit of a shock to most of the people in pit lane and you know
01:45there is some rumblings about the aero so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit more attention paid to
01:49this car in the future so this is a really busy period for the sport to something like five events
01:54in seven weeks no one can afford crash damage here no it is seriously busy and in and spare of thought
01:59for the Queensland teams all these races we're having are all down in the southern states Tasmania
02:04as well and New Zealand so the Queensland team's doing a lot of miles to get to all the destinations
02:09so they won't be racing for points this weekend at Albert Park but they'll be driving like they are
02:14and who knows maybe in 2015 they just might be can you tell Rusty and Greg Murphy are excited to be
02:22involved once again in 2015 time for a very quick break the the second race of the V8 supercars not
02:29too far away we'll hear from the boys again

02:58thank you Mel we love it there was a great first race bit of news to come out of that with Shane Van
03:04Gisbergen starting from pole position courtesy of his first race victory but uh been some investigation
03:10Murphy you've been down to the pit lane as well let's start with Scott Pye car 16 uh deemed to have
03:16driven in a careless manner contact with David Reynolds at turn three the stewards imposed a 50
03:21second uh addition to his race time so the equivalent of a pit lane penalty but there's
03:27an even more significant one that you want to talk about as well yeah so yeah Scott Pye been given that
03:31penalty penalty penalty but uh we saw some action on the front straight with Jamie Wincup and Scott McLaughlin
03:38McLaughlin in the Volvo on the grass and Jamie Wincup has been deemed to have uh forced him onto the grass
03:45dangerous driving he's been given a five spot penalty so he moves back from that second position moves
03:52back five spots and everyone else moves forward so we see him line up earn grid seven uh Scott McLaughlin
03:58taking grid two Michael Caruso moving up that spot to the third third place Fabian Coulthard
04:04Gartana Craiglands and then Jamie Wincup back in grid seven well done Chas Mostad we need to point out
04:09there are three drivers making their debut at Albert Park Nick Perkat Robert Dahlgren and Chas Mostad is
04:16the other one so finishing in the top ten good performance Mark Winterbottom was kind of knocking
04:20on the door there as well Jack Perkins back in uh in 21st and we've just detailed the issues for Reynolds
04:27and Pye so if you've just tuned into our coverage today the difference with the V8 supercar races in 2014 at
04:34Albert Park as we said in the little story prior to the break there it's not a championship points
04:41round we have points for the weekend to determine an overall Albert Park winner but the the big change
04:47this year of course is the double file rolling starts Murph yeah we've got that to contend with
04:53it went okay in the first race everyone got through the first corner pretty unscathed as we're on board
04:58there with Mark Winterbottom and his FPR Falcon but this time around we've got the acceleration zone for the
05:04start of the race which is similar to what they use for the restarts of the safety cars the leader
05:09will be waved a green flag if the starter is happy with the way they're forming up coming to the start
05:14line in car here with Jamie Wincup who has that penalty to deal with so the leader will take control
05:20when the green flag is waved and once he enters that acceleration zone it is up to him to decide when
05:25he accelerates away for the start Scott McLaughlin as we said the battle continues between him and
05:32Jamie Wincup it started at Adelaide and it's continuing here look at the helmet got the
05:38Javianas sticker he does and of course a great sticker on the side of the car
05:43Pluck it in first and give it some jandle give it some jandle that was the quote in Adelaide and it
05:48got everybody talking and uh here we go someone has made the most of that and got the Javianas
05:54on the helmet so uh some clever some clever marketing going on well done there's a face that was
06:00formerly at the Holden Racing Team and the guy Steve he's had a huge amount of experience
06:04Steve Hallam yeah he uh you know many many years at McLaren a huge part of McLaren for many years
06:09then ventured to the United States there for a couple of years Michael Waltrip that's right
06:13things like that yeah and then and uh spent some time just recently at HRT now at Techno Autosports so
06:20expect them to line up side by side two long queues of V8 supercars the safety car pulls in
06:2950 k's an hour 50 to 60 k's an hour sorry these guys have to line up their speed will be getting
06:34checked from the tower from the start tower van Gisbergen the opposite to the last one
06:39right over to the left hand side Caruso off pole for the first race moved him right over to the
06:45right hand side it didn't work for him because van Gisbergen got down the inside to take the lead
06:49at turn one we'll see what happens this time what will McLachlan do there's a big gap in between
06:54they're about to enter the acceleration zone let's watch Gisbergen what happens he's gone now he's great
07:01start oh and a Glockland on wheelspin Coulthard some contact there with the Volvo and he's playing
07:08defensive look at the Caruso Caruso from race one trying to sneak down inside Lowndes has had a good
07:14run there for Red Bull Racing Australia someone forced out wide there Garth Tander in car two look at
07:21car seven Todd Kelly it's a great start by him down there it's only finished 10th in the last race made
07:27up a couple of spots he's action down here Jason Bright into the back of the Jack Daniels car
07:31Winkup into the side of Moffett bright evasive action that was going to get the two at the front
07:37though Rusty van Gisbergen I spoke to him after this race he was expecting the fact that Winkup had
07:43that penalty he was expecting a big fight from McLachlan in the Volvo and so far he's getting it
07:48you talked about tire pressures in the wake of that that first race how significant were some of the the
07:54choices people made in that area there it's just watched down into 10 I reckon McLaughlin's gonna
07:57look down the inside and car now he is he's looking but oh van Gisbergen's tight he's very tight
08:04aggressive stuff from the young Kiwi and he's following another Kiwi in Shane van Gisbergen
08:22these two are brave young he runs wide Lowndes that's all it took for Lowndes to sneak and the other
08:30Kiwi woods there's Kooltar down the inside Caruso's gonna look in here too oh McLaughlin's gone four
08:36spots in the spate of one corner Tander can sense an opportunity he's got a great record at this track
08:43and so do the Holden racing team look at Caruso forcing the Volvo wide he'll have the inside for the
08:50next corner yeah this battle's not over yet there's gonna be another corner here side by side as
08:54Tanner looks to take action he's now got a bit of an overlap that has to form in behind great work
08:59that makes 11 to go with the pressure on you inside pressure now Moffett McLaughlin got the speed that
09:06Volvo is fast in a straight line Caruso has been forced to go right down the inside the Volvo on the
09:12outside oh Moffett so close to the back of the Volvo he's locked up the left on the right front
09:20of his Nissan Hornet Norton Hornet sorry here we go the breaking jewel down into four McLaughlin around the
09:28outside Caruso
09:33a little bit of a touch he's gonna have to give him room
09:41big handful of opposite lock for McLaughlin that gives maybe a car length or two breathing space for
09:47Michael Caruso who did a wonderful job in qualifying it was a pure 30 minute qualifying session fastest man
09:55takes pole and that's exactly what Caruso did for Nissan a breakthrough pole and they're looking
10:00racy in Albert Park aren't they yeah they're looking really racy lounge has been a big beneficiary here
10:05he's moved forward Coulthard giving him pressure into the first of the Nissans Caruso i reckon he's
10:13going to catch back up here i think he's going to get some clear here these guys will settle down
10:17it gives Bergen again sorry Rusty that gives me again look like he's done the same strategy as the
10:22first race he's he's had a couple laps there just trying to gather the pressures in the tyres get
10:27them settled down and it's a strategy that worked for him obviously in the first race and it looks
10:31like he's doing it again Lowndes has a look i was gonna say Lowndes just loves this sort of situation
10:37doesn't he it's almost a street fighting grab the car by the scruff of the neck let's have a look at this
10:42this start here we see McLaughlin just got a bit of a wheel spin there obviously in a low gear and he's
10:47just picked up a bit of wheel spin which balked that the volvo slightly and maybe balked Coulthard
10:53as well along the line he had to cover straight away but Lowndes was on the outside
11:03another angle down into turn one up onto two wheels briefly for Caruso
11:09really great work actually by everybody to get through there and here we go replay McLaughlin
11:16running wide through 12 and that was really costly gave Lowndes that opportunity to get up the inside
11:21we're joined in the coverage now from pit lane by brad jones who no doubt is his heart
11:28watching here just for a second fabian Coulthard i think brad jones's heart's going to be in his
11:32mouth a little bit more at the moment he's doing a good job brad he's doing an amazing job it's um
11:37much easier when you're in the car than when you're standing here watching it i'll give you
11:40the tip on that but fabian's got a fair bit of pace going on so is brad here at the moment he's
11:44done the fastest lap of the race so i think our cars are definitely strong here but it's such as
11:49merciful to you it's such a hard place to pass it's also hard when you pay the bills bradley yeah that
11:54becomes a bit nasty when you're watching the contact but i've got to say the boys are you know
11:58doing a phenomenal job out there and uh fabian's got you know a little bit more pace i think than
12:03lounges and and hopefully he can just skip by at some stage and uh and get up to shame hey brad give
12:09us a sense of of how the team are at the moment that was an awesome rebuild that they have been
12:14able to deliver in a very short period of time after that big role uh in adelaide everyone chipping
12:19in are they okay has it been a lot of late nights just give us an idea of that um it's hard to talk
12:24about that and watch this um look to tell you the truth it was a fantastic effort by all the guys i can't
12:29believe how much uh how much work they had to put in and and they got the job done we got the car
12:35finished a day earlier than we expected there was a fantastic camaraderie amongst all the guys didn't
12:40matter which car you worked on you got in and you helped on the team boc car so it's it's just been a
12:46really you know a great team effort by everybody yeah it is a great great job to get uh jamie back out
12:52there in a brand new car an awesome job on the vjr team and uh congratulations for that one and
12:57everyone's looking pretty good out there very strong so hopefully we'll uh you'll get us the
13:00results very shortly thanks murph i wish i could hear everything that you said
13:07cracking past me at the moment i only got the end of that we'll leave you to chew the fingernails and to
13:12hopefully not get any more gray hairs brad jones there from team boc and brad jones racing his guys
13:17fabian courthard currently third jason bright in eighth position as we go back to the lead the vip
13:23pet foods entry of van gisbergen just a few months ago he was at the famous rolex daytona 24 hour
13:30competing in a porsche i'll tell you what russie this is on right through the field everyone is i mean
13:37the gaps are absolutely tiny james moffat just set the fastest lap of the race back in ninth position
13:44no one's getting away here at all gisberger definitely as he thought has got a bit more
13:49of a challenge on this race lounge has not given up back in car with mclaughlin him and caruso have
13:55caught back up to the back of that little gaggle ahead which is baby down the box in the s60 through turn 10.
14:04how good does it sound something very different for v8 supercar
14:19another brand represented on the grid in what's turning out to be already a great year in 2014
14:24and we're only in effectively the second race meeting so so much to talk about
14:31and again for this race oh as timmy slave runs wide ahead of his teammate nick perkett every race
14:37the four races this weekend every car has a brand new set of tires so we're on a level playing field
14:42there's no tire strategy involved at all everyone gets to go out there each time every set of tires
14:47is color coded so everyone has to use that set of tires in that race and that said they're all on the
14:53soft rubber and a few of them are feeling the degradation at different levels it's coming on
14:57pretty quick in some regards it is management absolutely management so these there's they'll
15:00be trying different things to get an advantage at certain times of the race at the moment
15:04gisberger still leading looking strong lounges looking strong behind him
15:09wincup had that spot uh that five spot penalty hasn't made up any positions as yet from
15:15seventh spot on the grid for this race we'll grab a commercial break here in our coverage
15:20counting down as you can see to the next session of formula one practice a little later this afternoon
15:26we'll come back with more v8 supercar action right after this
15:38this year marks the 18th time that the v8 supercars have competed in a non-championship event at albert park since
15:48the very first australian grand prix world championship round was held here back in 1996 if you're just
15:54joining us today practice two coming up a little later this afternoon this is the second of the supercar races
16:00for the weekend we have four in all and shane van gespergen our race one winner is leading the way
16:06from craig lowndes and fabian coulthard best of the falcons at the moment is young chas mostard who's
16:12making his albert park debut he did a wonderful job last year for dick johnson racing at queensland
16:18raceway and i'm pleased to say that his team boss tim edwards is on the line from uh from pitlane g'day tim
16:24how are you mate good to have you with us it's been a tough weekend so far for the ford campaigners
16:29are you on the improve what can you tell us oh look our race pace is not actually you know
16:33representative where we're sitting on track at the moment unfortunately we got it a bit wrong
16:37in qualifying and we're paying the price for it at the moment you know we're you know chas is right
16:41up the back side of moffett but just not able to get past him but he's you know clearly the faster car
16:46of the two and uh unfortunately frosty stuck behind his teammate todd kelly so you know unfortunately
16:53we're paying the price for having a poor qualifying yesterday what went wrong tim oh look we tried a
16:57few things we went in a bit of a different direction and uh clearly it was the wrong
17:00direction particularly on frosty's car i think you know chas made a little bit of a mistake he
17:05probably should have been about six or seven uh which would you know would have been a good result
17:08for him but uh yeah we got a bit wrong with frosty's car and uh yeah we've uh we've put him right back
17:13in the mix of it and made it made it hard for him hey tim murph here obviously uh disappointing for
17:19dave reynolds and that first one getting turned around he's slowly trying to grab his way back up the
17:24field a little bit um those guys him and uh jack also having having a few issues this weekend jack's
17:30jack especially yeah look i mean jack's you know he's still getting his head around the car you know
17:35before adelaide he'd only had six dry laps in the car so that makes it hard for anyone um i think you
17:39know it's the same sort of thing you know when qualifying so close when you you know you've got
17:44less than a second separating the bloke and on pole and the bloke who's in 25th you don't have to have
17:49you know less than a tenth at every corner and you know it's hero to zero uh yeah it was unfortunate
17:55for dave but look he's got back six places already in this race but unfortunately when you put yourself
18:00back there you uh you know there's a lot more accidents tend to happen in that back part of
18:04the field and uh and he was taken out by five in race one tim just before we let you go uh is the
18:09parity issue a big thing for you it's obviously been talked about again in the press do you feel like
18:15the the falcon is is hamstrung at the moment compared to the other the other marks oh look
18:20you know we've got our challenges and you know everybody's aware of them so you know we've raised
18:24our concerns with the appropriate people and um you know we are running an older car um and these
18:30newer cars you know you've only got to look at the volvo it's a much smaller bodied car than our car so
18:34you know we understand that and we know we've got the handicap that goes with it but look you know we
18:39were still a lot more competitive than this last year so we're trying not to get too concerned with some
18:43of the parity discussions that are going on because we're not doing a good enough job ourselves at
18:47the moment so you know we we raced competitively triple eight last year there's no reason why we
18:52shouldn't be up where they are at the moment keep your chin up thanks for talking to us today and we
18:56wish the Ford Performance Racing been the best for the remainder of this weekend and for the remainder
19:01for that matter of the 2014 season we'll focus back on the the front of things here van Gisbergen
19:08from Lowndes and you've been paying particular attention to this corner Murph
19:11they're using a lot more of that that exit space through 12 there and again through 13 as well
19:16aren't they yeah well this track is unique it's a fantastic race track as we just saw
19:21looked like chas most are getting a bit of a run on moffett there um yeah long very long long loaded
19:27corners and reasonably high speed corners getting on the throttle halfway through them and trying to carry
19:32corner speed as we hear a lock up there from someone behind but that combination through turns 11 11 and 12
19:40very fast change of direction corners and these cars you know reasonably heavy
19:45more to go and the weight transfer when they come through 12 is significant and they're using
19:49every single little bit of road that's there and maybe sometimes a little bit more than
19:53than what uh the racetrack limits are giving them so it's it's tough you know
19:57you know reasonably long race the soft tires we see chairs have a look down the inside he's got a bit
20:02of an overlap moff gives him a bit of room and this battle will continue as tim said you know they've
20:08got some race pace these these balcons but their qualifying has let them down a little bit
20:13this is all good stuff for team techno for john o'webb and all the crew here break lock up for
20:18moffett on the entry to turn three holds it yeah just gets away with that one we see will davison
20:26behind the guy that has replaced him at fpr in the aerobus machine moffett gets a little bit wide
20:33sideways at the exit so i'm pretty sure davos got a bit of a carrot there in front of him that he
20:41would like to uh to get a bit get ahead of you mentioned the e63 uh amg we we spoke with lee
20:48holdsworth this morning before uh racing got underway and he felt like there is some improvement in this
20:53car they've taken a step forward they didn't necessarily uh as a team read the the way that
20:59the track had uh had gripped up or changed over the weekend so far and that that was possibly something
21:04that let them down but uh he did feel on a broad a broader perspective that the car is making the
21:09right uh the right steps they're taking the right steps yeah they're working hard i mean um looks
21:13like davos come to grips with it pretty good here at elmer park as we look at the back of jb wincup's car
21:18at jason bright and wincup hasn't made any progress forward he's right behind garth tander as we speak
21:27but he hasn't managed to move forward from that spot which i reckon they'll be a little bit concerned
21:32about that why he has not managed to move forward at all just shows how competitive the cars are we've
21:36talked about the fact the whole field was covered by one second around this 5.3 k track as we say
21:42here's wincup right behind tander three months ago mate doing a great job get the pressure off
21:49getting some info from david couchy in the pits
21:56just on the rev limiter in sixth gear down the front straight here at elmer park
22:00i just love the smooth precise movements it's it's all fluid isn't it for jamie well he's certainly
22:08doing it fluid he's doing it smooth i don't reckon everybody else out there is doing it like as easy
22:14as he's making it look but as i said he hasn't moved forward so it might look like he's doing it easy but
22:19i'm pretty sure he's not going to be satisfied with this result some weirdness going on here and just in
22:23terms of tires for different people tander look look speedy before not the case now he just had a real
22:29squirm off the complex there turn five and he'll be managing the rear tires on the hrt commodore
22:40oh listen to the wheel spin
22:44oh look at tander look at tander that's great pictures out
22:47love it out the front of jamie wicker he'll be he'll be looking for an opportunity it runs a
22:52slightly wide there through 10 and you can see winkup come up behind him
22:59this place is notorious for this kind of thing his tires start to go away
23:02the braking as you try to get in the corners just having little slight lock-ups here and there
23:08and the corner speeds as i said before especially through places like this you can see the car moving
23:12around the tires just working so hard it's screaming at the moment for grip and it doesn't have it
23:23it'll be a frustrated garf tander but it's it's wonderful for you watching at home he's making
23:28this thing dance off in the background oh his teammate came through the corner and the jack daniels nested
23:34and got him too all of a sudden looks like davison's car might be starting to struggle too so this is
23:43all the tire management which is great for us what a finish we've got coming up
23:48two laps to go two laps to go techno doing the job at the moment in that vip entry
23:54shane van gisbergen he'll be looking for maximum points for the weekend so far they're not championship
24:00points but it's for albert park glory maximum 75 up for grabs in each race there's the replay for
24:07you and they have double points come sunday
24:14rick kelly just missing the back of his norton hornet teammate
24:21back to fabian called that he's managed to just calm everything down a little bit
24:25back to that spot yeah this battle's gonna go right down to the wire wind cup being as smooth
24:32as possible just waiting for that moment where gartana makes that a little bit bigger mistake
24:37see him just missing the apexes slightly see how much more road jamie wind cup's using there he's
24:42able to get to the apex and keep the car better balanced than what garth is at the moment look at
24:46the rear of the hrt car oh and jason brightson this as well
24:51so wind cup has a decision to make here because bright has closed tan is doing his level best to
25:00defend it's fantastic stuff from gt but his time running out
25:07one and a half to go as you say you're absolutely right
25:10wind cup has to make the right decision here too because jason bright's about to pounce
25:14and he looks like he's got still some reasonable car speed
25:24still as calm as you like on the gear lever
25:33jamie's just able to carry that little bit more entry speed than what garth is able to do at the
25:38moment
25:47brand new chassis for jason bright
25:56well i think that's what everybody wanted coming into the albert park weekend but it hasn't been that
26:00way so far lots of action good action though rusty we haven't seen uh any real damage at the moment
26:07which in gives us some great battles out there to watch and talk about so here we go down into four a
26:14big passing opportunity big break down into four gt's pretty good on the brakes though all these guys
26:21so much experience but win cup still just hounding the back of the hrt where are the options for him
26:28where can win cup have a go here if he gets close enough well it'll determine how good gt gets out of
26:34this next section down into turn 10 is the next braking oppa braking passing opportunity
26:39you see him run just a fraction wide again but he's on the throttle okay
26:43wincup not using quite as much road able to get the car a little bit straighter gt's thinking
26:47pretty straight that time so he's not going to get a chance here let's see him close up under brakes
26:54nothing in it gt got a pretty good run through the apex through 10 through 11 there's not going to be
26:59a chance down here in the 12 the next one is into 13. throttle mesh to the floor love it for wincup
27:08he shows the nose but this isn't the spot the run here is going to be critical for gt
27:12and he gets through good that could be it that could be game over wincup glance in the rear view
27:20mirror where is jason bright in all of that meantime van gisbergen on course for his second straight
27:26win he's already doing the drifting he's managed to break lands on the last lap or so and just get him
27:32a little bit of that that break he needed wonderful get another display of car controls we do look at
27:38the oversteer beautiful stuff turns it on for the crowd shane van gisbergen will win race two
27:45at albert park from craig lowndes and fabian caulfard the beyond blue nissen of michael caruso finishes
27:51fourth and that's a great battle that we've enjoyed between garth tander jamie wincup and toward
28:01the end there with jason bright getting in the mix as well super stuff we've recapped the results
28:07on the pedis scoreboard for you mclaughlin finishes fifth after starting on the front row
28:13and mostard it's a pretty reasonable performance in the nbr falcon will davison gets inside the top 10
28:22in that erebus motorsport v8 well done
28:29and it's just i can't wait for the remaining races of the of the weekend now that's the quality of
28:35racing we've got and so far no dramas with the double file restarts either no the boys are behaving
28:40they've got uh got it down pad a little bit they're making sure that they're getting through
28:45turn one so far fantastic very very close racing there's a lot of battles going on there you can
28:49see the rubber building up the soft tires working hard and all the boys are on it yep rolling starts
28:55have been a great thing so far and different strategies different approaches with each of them
