00:29Well the V8 Supercar Championship is back on the road again after starting the season at Adelaide we've now come across to Tasmania our location the Simmons Plains Raceway just outside of Launceston we're getting ready for two qualifying sessions and a wonderful history here championship racing going all the way back to 1969. Hi everybody I'm Matt White and welcome to the tyre power Tasmania 400 the biggest sporting event on the apple aisle at the shortest racetrack we have on the calendar one lap around here
00:58takes less than a minute it is short but it's spectacular and it's the first weekend of the super sprint format so two 100 kilometre races today and one 200k race tomorrow. Let's check out the championship point score after our opening event at the Clipsal 500.
01:15So Craig Lowndes leads it by 52 points second is Fabian Coulthard he won two out of the three races at this venue last year Shane Van Gisbergen is in third. Jamie Winkup in seventh that's the first time in nine years that Jamie hasn't been first or second after the opening round of the championship.
01:34So first up back to back qualifying sessions for races four and five as we welcome Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton in commentary.
01:42Just a little over three and a half minutes remaining qualifying for race number four our super sprint races at Simmons Plains Raceway and Jamie Winkup has got very quick sector splits through sectors one and two oh he can't pull it up at turn six.
01:56It locked the inside front green boxes for him in the first two segments of the racetrack he's the fastest man thus far 51.7 his own best time but that little mistake at six cost him two tenths of a second but he remains on top.
02:10No just eclipsed by his teammate Lowndes it's now Lowndes Winkup Engel David Wall punches to second this is going to be an extraordinary few minutes of qualifying motorsport because it's changing all over Dave Reynolds to two great job Dave Reynolds 51.67 Mostert to fourth Todd and Rick Kelly both inside the ten now Lee Holdsworth goes in
02:33for Erebus Mercedes so we've got Holden then three forwards another Holden a Merck a Nissan a Holden of Jason Bright it changes again as Fabian Coulthard slots in to fourth position look at James Courtney he goes up to second.
02:51Barely able to stop the car and Will Davison's off the road at turn six he was the winner here in 2012 it's Lowndes Courtney Reynolds Wall Coulthard Mostert Winkup high
03:01Russell Engel Russell Engel to the top on a 51.5 there's fire in the old boy yet great job
03:08the last pole position for him was back in 1923 at Winton he loves it when I say that
03:162001 it was 2001 it feels like 1923 as Coulthard locks it up
03:22this is extraordinary the old timer the 50 year old sits on top with a 51.5
03:31Garth Tander with four pole positions at this circuit is lighting up the screen one green box for car number two
03:38Russell's really happy with this car he's enjoying driving it he's driven it now in Adelaide and the non championship
03:45event in Melbourne Winkup meantime 10th at the moment but very fast on the sector splits here's Tander it's all going on boys
03:52good job 51.47 displaces Engel McLaughlin to five
03:59Winkup is quick too oh check that out David Reynolds almost lost it at turn seven
04:05turn seven it's a busy lap isn't it Winkup Lowndes 51.4 for Jamie Winkup so Winkup Lowndes
04:12so Winkup Lowndes Engel to third Winkup jammed that one in Courtney then Reynolds then McLaughlin
04:19Van Gisburgh and Mostert Wall and Coulthard they'll have a flat spot on the tyre there's Lucas
04:23umbrel team owner for the Russell Engel entry car number 23 and as Matty pointed out you go all the
04:30way back to Winton 2001 when Rusty had a pole he's in the game in the moment oh barely able to stop
04:37and the Volvo overshot massively down there at the hairpin turn four and that was Scott McLaughlin
04:44here comes Winterbottom and Winterbottom goes to six
04:48so Dave Reynolds Winterbottom and Mostert three of the factory cars in the top 10
04:57Van Gisburgh are now back to eighth so clearly that lap that we've made reference to Winkup having the
05:03fast sector split in intermediate two he put the last portion of it together beautifully meantime here's
05:09his teammate Lowndes he's got to find 0.06 of a second but he's already taken a snip out of these
05:15tyres there'll be a tall order to climb over his teammate now but he's going to throw everything
05:21at it look at how close those margins are oh that was nice he just missed the apex and he's had to
05:28run wide that's the end of that that was very close and so he could see the time loss and gain on the
05:33dashboard and they knew that going into turn six there was no point pressing on with the lap so
05:38Lowndes in Courtney in in the foreground car 22 and Winkup on the provisional pole there's still
05:46people completing their lap here's Scott McLaughlin seventh at the moment 51.6 it'll be good to have
05:53a look over his shoulder here to see whether he's got any steering binding at turn six
05:57the power steering issue they've had he said it feels like he's doing a weight session every time
06:09he's out there like he's driving an older car McLaughlin seventh
06:14wow what a finish but it's a red bull one two for Winkup and Lowndes Russell Engel on the second row of the grid
06:25for race four alongside his mate James Courtney Davey Reynolds into fifth with Mark Winterbottom the best of the
06:31Volvo's McLaughlin in seventh and the best of the Mercedes Erebus AMGs belongs to Will Davison inside the top 10
06:38Fabian Coulthard will start from 12th Scotty Pye 15th Todd and Rick Kelly 18th and 19th not a good effort from
06:47Jason Brighton I want to get to the bottom of that Michael Caruso from 23rd with Nick Perkatt his time
06:53excluded after going off and causing a red flag earlier in the session
06:57well there's no doubt the car is quick and our reigning champion is in the mood again Jamie Winkup
07:08collects the second pole position of 2014 the 53rd now of his career and he continues that relentless
07:16march towards Peter Brock's all-time record of 57 pole positions but what about the performance
07:22of Russell Engel 50 years of age he's been coming here since 1996 of course the oldest driver in the
07:29field we like to remind him of that and he has now posted his best qualifying effort in five years
07:35starting the first race of the afternoon from position number three the enforcer is with Rihanna
07:40Russell Engel I have not seen a smile that big for a long time on you that is a phenomenal effort
07:49yeah really happy like how good's that oh Brendan my engineer jumped on the radio and said
07:54I thought I heard him say P3 I said just repeat P3 just repeat again will you I thought how good's that
08:02I mean obviously hasn't been one of my strong points over the years and the racing's easy bit for me you
08:08know look it's a great effort by this team you know I underplayed it a bit this year on where I think
08:14we'd end up and uh we're ahead of schedule really good so just really happy for the crew happy for
08:19Lucas great for a small team to you know we'll punch it away I've never seen you look so relaxed
08:24and happy than I have this year we look forward to you in the race thanks for us I'm looking forward
08:28to it fantastic stuff you'll have James Courtney alongside him on the second row of the grid his
08:33old mate so little little time to reset and do it all again another 10 minute burst hold on as we get
08:40ready for the closing stages here of our next qualifying session and on screen Jack Perkins
08:45gelled when he's currently in position seven his opening account punched him right up the top
08:51he's since been climbed over by Jamie Wincup and Craig Lowndes Lowndes meantime is very quick you can
08:55see bottom right of screen green box in the first sector for Red Bull Racing Australia car number
09:00triple eight Lowndes has had race wins and polls here previously he's on screen two green boxes it
09:06turns sixth out skates it into the left-hander at six this is critical how much throttle percentage
09:12can he carry just missed it Neil still got him there what 51 33 very very good lap but he just
09:21missed the apex he'll be angry with himself because he would have lost roughly a tenth of a second on the
09:26entry to turn six on board now with Dave Reynolds when he was warming his tires Reynolds had quite a
09:33moment in what we loosely describe as the back straight here it's the 265 kilometer an hour run
09:40so bot low entry David Reynolds qualified well in the previous position number five and Reynolds now
09:47for p3 and Lowndes has done that 51-3 so 51-3 then Wincup then Davis and p3 Coulthard quickly eclipsing in the
09:55Lockwood entry so he makes amends for the disaster in the previous session as we go back to Lowndes
10:01the pole sitter a 1-3 is a handsome time Jack Perkins up to six that's a great job Jack 51-6-1
10:07McLaughlin back to seven Courtney Ingle up to ninth Mostert in 10 it's Todd Kelly up to five great job
10:16it's the stock market gone crazy watching the numbers fly around we've got all five makes inside
10:21the top 10 three Holdens then a Merc then a Nissan then a couple of Fords a Volvo and two more Holdens
10:27including Russell Ingle in 10 although he's just been bumped down because Scott Pye has gone into eighth
10:33Wincup is a threat fastest man to intermediate one that's at the hairpin the next reference will
10:38come up shortly into turn six so it's Wincup and threatening in from position two at the moment
10:43Mark Winterbottom up to third Wincup's on a number here he's you can see from the green boxes in the
10:50bottom right hand corner of screen he's on the charge you'll see him come into view very shortly
10:55here he is he's currently second he's got to find point zero six and he does it he's done the best
11:01time of the weekend a 51.19 for Jamie Wincup that's very impressive qualifying record here
11:09belongs to his teammate in 2012 51.04 so 51.19 leads it Wincup already a pole position he's going on
11:19with the boys Wincup's done another better time again to intermediate one on this his third flying
11:25lap fourth Lee Holdsworth's done a great job guys we said Will Davison but Lee Holdsworth popped in
11:32there into sixth Will's just bettered his time so he's gone up to seventh we've got both Erebus
11:39Mercedes inside the top 10 and two green boxes for Wincup so an intermediate two on the break approach
11:45to six he's improved his own time he has a moment grabs the curb at turn six to the line and
11:51he actually found five one hundredths of a second that was a very high quality lap Krompo that was
11:58right out sideways he bumped the curb his accuracy at turn six was fantastic I'll tell you what Robert
12:04Dalgren in the Volvo has just jumped up to 11th on his last flying lap that's a great effort from the Swede
12:12another exciting session but the same result at the top Wincup and Lowndes not over and done with
12:21yet Coulthard still on a fly but two red boxes next to his name he's currently in fifth and that's
12:28where he stays five manufacturers in the top eight that is a great run Todd Kelly the lead Nissan in
12:35eighth Holdsworth and Davison there great job David Couchy of course now in Jamie Wincup's corner in
12:432014 and it started perfectly this weekend so another all Red Bull Racing Australia front row
12:50Winterbottom and McLaughlin on the second Coulthard works his way back up great effort from Erebus
12:55Motorsport to see Holdsworth and Davison inside the top 10 Dalgren just outside Scotty Pye in 13th
13:03David Wall from 16th Russell Ingle ends up in 18th but he won't forget that first qualifier of the day
13:09in a hurry and Shane Van Gisbergen well that's a big question mark he'll start right down the back of
13:15the field in 24th Jamie well done great job but let me just recap for you mate I know you were busy
13:200.6 the whole field Krompo and Scafie have gone to have their fluids topped up I mean they were off
13:27the scale it is so intense yeah mate what I thought was really admirable there you did a 51-19 and then
13:33went out and nailed it again with a 1.4 well done yeah yeah it was a result of getting everything
13:37right you know the car was obviously uh really uh sort of match perfect between the front and the
13:42rear and um I think I did a pretty good job as well I did good got it got that thing around as quick
13:46as it I thought it could go anyway so um you know good uh good good to piece it together um yeah two
13:52poles in one day it's awesome feeling mate you left nothing on the table over here between turn six and
13:56seven last corner there a little bit of opposite lock mate a little bit of a slide yeah it has to be it's so
14:00close you've got to be absolutely on the limit um locking wheels into one out of control at the
14:05hairpin and then uh as you could see on telly I was a bit loose at the last one but but that's what
14:10you've got to do doesn't always work out but today it worked out well done mate I think we just saw
14:14you at your best congratulations thanks Lyko pumped thanks well that was one fantastic celebration
14:20congratulations Will Davies and Lee Holdsworth Betty was crocheting during that qualifying session and
14:26this is the first Erebus dual top 10 in qualifying so I don't know what that says
14:31well let's Lee speak first he smashed me by a couple of thousands so but no to see the reaction
14:36of the teams you know it's really fantastic and uh we're continuing the progress um we've shown all
14:41year and that was great qualifying speed by Lee in Adelaide I had good race speed and um Grand Prix
14:46was very encouraging and now we've translated that into um you know some pretty um you know handy
14:51qualifying times at a circuit where we know we've got a bit of a handicap up the straights so um yeah
14:55awesome to see the reaction from everyone Betty Ryan Ross the whole team so um great job and
15:00awesome job Lee Lee you had a tough 12 months a tough initiation at Erebus but it's been great
15:05came out at Clipsaw had some good speed and and to have this sort of qualifying speed at a track you
15:09probably weren't quite expecting it yeah certainly not I thought coming here you know first uh top top
15:15half of the field would be a good effort but um I suppose you know two cars in the top 10 we couldn't be
15:20happier um Will and I are you know a millimeter apart and um we'll have some good racing out there
15:26and it's just nice to be able to race up in that top 10 again um you can race with guys that you can
15:31run side by side with I know I know Will will give me heaps of room um but yeah it's it's fantastic and
15:36to see the team the celebrations that are going on when we make the top 10 it's awesome and you can
15:41see that we're just hitting our goals all the time and you know we got to start stepping them up I
15:44think look forward to the race thanks guys thank you sponsors mate
15:48it's me
