00:00We're only six races into the V8 supercar season and already the rivalries are as hostile and intense as they've ever been.
00:30While Red Bull Racing Australia have so far managed to climb their way to the top, the rest of the field is putting up one hell of a fight.
00:39And the rivalry between the Holland Racing team and Red Bull Racing Australia is on. Courtney gets the win.
00:57Today we return to Winton in Victoria where last year it all came crashing down for the defending champ.
01:03Oh, problem for Winkup. Winkup out of the race.
01:06A big crash involving Carnival.
01:08And like a bunch of savages, they all lined up to pounce.
01:13And Moffitt takes the advantage.
01:14Not once James Moffitt gets his first win in the V8 supercar championship.
01:20Not twice.
01:21Winnerbottom finally on the winner's list at Winton.
01:23But three times.
01:24That's a great victory for James Taundee.
01:27And you can bet they'll all be lining up again today.
01:31Welcome to the Winton 400 as the super sprint season continues.
01:35The V8 supercars only on 7.
01:39There's no doubt about it.
01:42The pressure is building.
01:43All the talk is done.
01:45So it's back in the hands of these guys.
01:47The drivers.
01:47There's James Moffitt.
01:48Scored his career breakthrough win at this circuit last year.
01:52His teammate, Michael Caruso for the Norton Hornets.
01:55What about this man, Scott McLaughlin?
01:57And the Volvo S60 been roaring through the start of the championship.
02:01Craig Lowndes, of course, is the man to beat.
02:04And the youngster, Chas Mostert.
02:06Eyes focused and ready to rumble.
02:08Hi, everybody.
02:08Welcome to Winton Motor Raceway as we get ready for qualifying.
02:12And races 7 and 8 of the championship.
02:15Last weekend, the super sprint format showed us there is absolutely no time to blink.
02:20And then there's this track itself.
02:22The drivers already know it's the fastest it's ever been.
02:25But they also know one mistake around here and you're right down the back of the pack.
02:29Let's take a look at the championship picture because it's really interesting and quite intriguing.
02:33Craig Lowndes now 70 points ahead of his teammate.
02:37Is this the year that he breaks his 15-year title drought?
02:41Coulthard and Winkup are hovering and now it's on.
02:44So back-to-back qualifying sessions.
02:4610 minutes each.
02:47No room for error.
02:48Joining me in commentary, Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton.
02:50And we've got beautiful conditions here today.
02:56Forecast maximum 17 degrees.
02:58There is the chance of a shower.
02:59We had some showers yesterday that affected some of the three practice sessions.
03:04Fortunately, at the end of the day, we did get a dry run.
03:07We saw some extraordinary speed.
03:09That's going to be a big talking point.
03:11And to cover it from the pit lane, it is welcome back this weekend to former Bathurst winner
03:15and the current leader of the New Zealand Touring Car Championship, Gregory Murphy.
03:18Nice to have you back, Murph.
03:19Thanks, Cromley.
03:20Well, these guys created history last year, only eight months ago, right here at Winton Motor Raceway
03:24with that sensational 1-2 finish.
03:26So far this year, this whole team has had some great performances.
03:30Not so good at Simmons Plains last week, though.
03:32So we are going to be watching these guys.
03:36Yeah, down here with Mark Winterman.
03:38I'm sorry, they're just getting ready to go.
03:39But, Mark, just quickly, you've got an advantage being up this end of the pit lane.
03:43You're going to be able to get out.
03:44Will you get the amount of laps you're looking for here in?
03:47No.
03:47No, we won't.
03:48But it's the same for everyone.
03:50We're going to go out, warm our car up on our used tyre and then put a set of greens on
03:55and get one crack.
03:55So it's all you can do.
03:57Good luck, pal.
03:59Yeah, well, in the 400 years that Russell Unguha has been racing V8 Supercars, he's only
04:03ever qualified on pole position once in his entire career.
04:07And that was right here at Winton Motor Raceway back in 2001.
04:11Last time out, though, he was third on the grid at Tassie.
04:15Russell Unguha is in a new team this year.
04:17He's relaxed.
04:18I think this is going to be his year to get his qualifying happening in V8 Supercars.
04:22Thanks, Rihanna.
04:25Rihanna Crean, Mark Larkin, Greg Murphy covering the action.
04:28Reminder that Mark Beretta's off on tour to cure duties.
04:30Here's our racetrack theatre this weekend.
04:3212 corners, 3 kilometres.
04:34Great little racetrack.
04:37Qualifying the corresponding session last year, we had 24 cars covered by 0.5 of a second.
04:42It's got the slowest average speed of all of the venues on the tour.
04:48But yesterday, if you didn't catch the news, there's some resin that's been placed around
04:52the circuit to do the usual preparation to get ready for the race meeting, fix the odd
04:56crack here and there.
04:58But as it spread around the circuit, it made it very grippy.
05:00So through these sectors that you see on screen at the moment, 1, 2 and 3, we're going to
05:05see some spectacular times if yesterday's practice is any guide.
05:08The fastest man who's on V8 Extra, Fabian Coulthard, but we've seen 16 cars beneath the lap record.
05:15The previous practice record smashed, and I dare say that we're about to see some changes
05:19with qualifying times as well.
05:21Here's our viewer vote question for you.
05:23Which of the five manufacturers will win race number seven today?
05:27You can go to v8supercars.com.au or vote via the Seven Sport app.
05:31And if we go back 12 months, Crompo, a Nissan, a Ford and a Holden split the three races
05:37here at Winton.
05:38But the last 11 races straight in this championship in the back end of last year have been taken
05:44out by the Holden Commodores.
05:45So get behind your manufacturer, v8supercars.com.au, slash vote for his Crompo Set Seven Sport app.
05:54On board, the Red Bull Racing Australia Commodore of Jamie Winkup.
05:59And just touching on what you mentioned about the track surface and the extra grip goes the
06:06other way, doesn't it?
06:06When the sun comes out, it gets extra slippy in spots.
06:10It will do.
06:12Yeah, now what's interesting down here on the pit lane, we've talked a little bit about
06:15the strategy option.
06:16Now I look down the pit lane, there's a lot of tyres out now.
06:19So what we're going to see now, here they come.
06:21A whole bunch of cars are going to roll in and put a set of tyres on.
06:24So what they've probably done is warm up the car, maybe even warm up a set of front tyres.
06:28That tells us all those teams have been relegated to the strategy of saying, we're going to
06:33put a set of tyres and really have one run at it.
06:35Up the front end of pit lane, Red Bull Racing, no cars in by the look of it.
06:38They're going to keep going and that's the advantage of winning the championship, getting
06:41yourself up the head of pit lane.
06:43That's right, Larco.
06:44And one of the things about it is there's two different strategies going on with Winkup
06:47and Lowndes.
06:49Winkup is choosing to use two sets of tyres.
06:51Craig looks like he will warm the car up and then put all his money on the last part of
06:58this session with one set of tyres.
07:00So as you said, they can't really do this in terms of two lots and two laps and get that
07:05done in the 10 minutes required.
07:07So a lot of strategy and a lot of risk taking involved in getting the very best lap time
07:14at the end of this first segment of 10 minutes.
07:21So the new fastest time at this circuit, 1.20.79, set by Fabian Coulthard yesterday.
07:30Neil mentioned in the track map that it's a racing theatre and that's what this place really
07:35is.
07:35You get to see so much of the circuit when you hear the two long straights, turn 7.89,
07:42are fantastic.
07:43And will it be a theatre of dreams or a theatre of drama in this qualifying session?
07:47I'm tipping the lap.
07:48This is our first reference time from Coulthard, 1 minute 21.1.
07:53We got into the 20s yesterday.
07:56Gisberg and straight into the 20s, so 20.9.
07:58The first question's answered.
07:59With a bit of sunlight around, will it affect the grip?
08:02They're already into very quick times and you can actually see, folks, if you look carefully
08:07at how dark the road is in bands.
08:10And off the road, Scott Pye, turn 3.
08:13So you can actually see where it's grippy in places.
08:19And for many of the drivers, they've been talking about the fact that it's completely
08:23changed the rhythm of the way they go about doing their job at Winton.
08:26Because remember that there's an enormous number.
08:2918 of the 25 entries use this location as their home test track.
08:33So a lot of people have got a lot of data that's been accumulated, not only with these new generation
08:39cars, but in years previously.
08:41To some extent, they'll have to find themselves resetting.
08:43So at dusk last night, I watched Jack Perkins having a look around the circuit.
08:49He was wondering whether or not he needed to stiffen the car up generally to cope with these
08:53grippier conditions.
08:54And that'll be something that many of them are puzzling over at the moment.
08:56And these shorter qualifying sessions are handing something else to the drivers that
09:01they haven't been used to in the longer qualifying sessions.
09:04And it's exactly what Shane Van Gisbergen has gone through in the second part of that lap.
09:08He was fastest to the first sector and then came on the back of traffic.
09:12Dale Wood was in front of him.
09:13Other cars were in front of him.
09:14And the time drifted away, although he still manages to post a 120.96 with the fastest third sector.
09:21So Van Gisbergen is really flying, but there's more pace out of there.
09:25As qualifying continues here at the Winton 400.
09:42Welcome back.
09:43We're taking a look at the Jack Daniels Nissan Altima of Todd Kelly.
09:48As he tries to put a dent in the time that now belongs to Michael Caruso.
09:52So we've got another Nissan at the top of the timesheet.
09:55120.75 is the time that Caruso has put down.
10:01And just over two minutes remaining.
10:04That's very quick.
10:06Fastest time we've seen ever of a V8 supercar around here.
10:09Quicker by 4.100 than the time set by Coulthard yesterday, who's quick, by the way,
10:14even on this very lap.
10:15We're watching Todd Kelly.
10:17He was very happy with his car yesterday.
10:19They were really puzzled by their lack of performance.
10:23Perkett's got position two at Simmons Plains last weekend for Nissan Motorsport.
10:28Coulthard continuing to blaze long.
10:30Here's James Moffat, car number 360, coming up to complete his lap.
10:35McLaughlin goes to P2.
10:37Now Moffat to the top on a 20.4.
10:39That is a stunning time.
10:41Winner of the race here last year, Moffat, Caruso, McLaughlin, Holdsworth, who was quick yesterday.
10:48Watch out for Coulthard.
10:49Here he comes off turn 12.
10:52The Lockwood entry, Phil Keatsay do one more lap.
10:54He goes to the top.
10:55It's tantalisingly close to a 19.
10:59That is a great lap time.
11:01Four tenths of a second up on Moffat.
11:04And Rick Kelly's gone in to position three.
11:07So we've got Coulthard leading the way.
11:08Then three Nissans, a Volvo.
11:10The Mercedes of Lee Holdsworth.
11:12Nick Perkett and Scott Pye in the ten.
11:15Shane Van Gisbergen and David Reynolds.
11:18All five manufacturers in the top ten, Matt.
11:21So currently the Holden and Fabian Coulthard with a good gap to Moffat.
11:26Rick Kelly, Caruso, three Nissans.
11:28Lowndes now to number two with a 21.35.
11:32Perkett and Winker, eighth and ninth in that ten.
11:36Scott Pye, very good job to be the lead forward.
11:42Surprised that we've not seen a shot from Jason Bright just yet.
11:46Here's James Moffat, turn 11, currently P3.
11:49What about this, guys?
11:50Mark Winterbottom, 25th.
11:52He's last.
11:54He had a scrappy day yesterday by his own admission.
11:56Flat spotted a tyre.
11:58Caught by traffic.
11:59Caught by the red flag.
12:00Moffat didn't improve, by the way.
12:03So for Frosty, it was a difficult day.
12:05Remember, he's had four pole positions here as we go back to Van Gisbergen.
12:09Right now to fourth.
12:10So I question where he was in the field.
12:12He's up to fourth now.
12:13But they're all chasing his teammate.
12:15Van Gisbergen is 13th through the final corner.
12:18Please tell me that's close.
12:20And that was right at the last.
12:24The gears goes up to second.
12:26Close.
12:27Point zero two of a second.
12:29Coulthard Van Gisbergen.
12:33A last dash.
12:34Dale Wood up to third.
12:36Great job, Dale Wood.
12:38Winterbottom now.
12:3921-44.
12:40He's had his run.
12:41He's 24th.
12:42Jamie Winkup's in 14th and stays there.
12:47So Winkup will start from mid-pack.
12:51Okay, mate.
12:51That is in the second.
12:53Can you give me a read on the card, please, mate?
12:55Read on the card.
12:57Winkup 14th.
12:58David Couchy.
13:00Talking to him.
13:00Give me a read on the card.
13:01We're going to read on the card.
13:02It'll be like a full scout.
13:04He's 14th.
13:05Okay, mate.
13:06He's still playing.
13:07That's the first time that Fabian's had pole position this season.
13:10His last came at Phillip Island last year.
13:12So two Kiwis on the front row of the grid.
13:14Great effort from Dale Wood.
13:16He'll start alongside Lowndes.
13:18Moffat was so close to getting his first pole position.
13:21Michael Caruso ends up 11th.
13:23Scotty McLaughlin drops back to 12th.
13:25Look at that.
13:26Winkup second in the championship.
13:2814th on the grid.
13:30Winterbottom 24th on the grid for race seven.
13:33So another qualifying session still to come.
13:37Well, it's a case of give them grip and watch them fly here at Winton.
13:47And Fabian Coulthard has done the best of it.
13:50The fastest man ever around this circuit now.
13:52120.04.
13:54Electrifying pace.
13:551,000 bucks.
13:56His fourth career pole position.
13:58His first here at Winton.
14:00And a lockout for the Kiwis with Shane Van Gisbergen on the front row.
14:03But this is the incredible story.
14:05This man here, four pole positions at Winton.
14:08More than any other driver.
14:09From 2007 until last year, he was never outside the top ten in qualifying.
14:15But now he's qualified 24th for the first race this afternoon.
14:20Mark Larkin caught up with him in the break.
14:23Yeah, we're keen to hear from Mark Whittlebottom, mate.
14:25We're looking what your drama was.
14:26We thought it was maybe traffic.
14:28And then you put a tyre in while the diamond wasn't quick enough.
14:31And we saw some footage of it spearing off the track.
14:33The car doesn't look damaged, though.
14:35No, it's just, yeah, just had a bad run then.
14:39And when you have a bad run, you laugh.
14:40So that surface that's down when you're on it's really grippy.
14:44But once you drop a wheel just off it, it just turns to mush.
14:48And I had one crack at it.
14:49And, yeah, I messed it up.
14:50So, yeah, not good starting at the back.
14:54There must be a massive amount of grip out there online as a result of that, though, Mark.
14:57Just listening to other drivers, they're all saying how great their cars are,
15:00which I don't think it's a car.
15:01It's clearly the track.
15:02Yeah, it's good on that line.
15:03But it's like a train track.
15:04Once you get off that line, it's horrible.
15:07So, yeah, I didn't get a good run yesterday.
15:10Didn't really know what to feel.
15:11And I thought I had enough grip and corner speed.
15:14But once I just dropped a wheel off, it lost about a second in one corner.
15:17So, hopefully, I learnt from Mother's Day.
15:20Good luck for this one, mate.
15:22So, riding now with Mark Winterbottom here at Turn 10.
15:25This time they've changed their strategy.
15:28Pepsi Max Ford Performance Racing.
15:29They've sent him out on new or green tyres.
15:32We're riding with him on his first flying lap.
15:35There's been a little bit of traffic along the way.
15:37So, it might even be the second flying lap where he could get a yield from this.
15:41But they've completely flipped their strategy now.
15:43Gone out and got on with it.
15:45In the meantime, Wind Cup's done a 20.6.
15:47Winterbottom just punches out a 21.0.
15:50And Lowndes and Mostert, I know, I heard them on the radio talking about doing an out lap, warming up and coming back in.
15:57I don't know that that process, they're all welded to this, not all, many are welded to this process.
16:02I reckon they're going to have to adjust that thinking, Merv.
16:04Yeah, Larko, you spoke about it right at the start of the first qualifying session about the strategy.
16:08And the first four guys on the grid for the first qual did two runs.
16:12It's going to be very interesting to see who decides to change that strategy.
16:15They might be locked in, as you said, mate.
16:16So, but, you know, we'll see what happens because, as I said, first four guys, two runs on two sets of tyres.
16:22Thanks, mate.
16:23And while you were chatting, Scotty McLaughlin punched out a 19.
16:26We have never seen a 19 in a V8 supercar around here.
16:31It's an extraordinary number.
16:32So, Volvo fastest at the moment.
16:34And then it's Mercedes-Benz in position two, Lee Holdsworth.
16:38A Falcon, correction, a Holden David-Wall.
16:40Sorry, a Falcon David-Wall next.
16:42I'll get it sorted.
16:43And then Jamie Wind Cup in a Holden next.
16:45So, we've got an amazing spread of cars at the top right now.
16:48And McLaughlin's going on with it.
16:50He's fastest to the first sector after doing that 119.9 flat.
16:55Incredible stuff.
16:56I've never seen, especially the guys at the top, obviously, drivers so happy and so keen to get back out in the car.
17:02And we saw the signs yesterday in practice when Shane Van Gisburgh and radioed back.
17:07This feels like a Formula One car.
17:08There's so much grip out here.
17:10That's fast, Skippy.
17:11That is very fast.
17:12The fastest we've ever seen.
17:14If you said before the weekend, would you see a 19 this weekend?
17:17There's no way.
17:18Absolutely no way.
17:19The car's good.
17:21Got a little bit of over-series towards the end there, but...
17:24As that was Scott McLaughlin in the background, as the most successful driver in the history of the category and Victorian-based,
17:32you spent your entire life effectively testing here because there was a point in the rules where teams had to nominate a locked-in location and this was it for you.
17:41So, you would have thought you'd won the lotto if you saw a 19.
17:43You'd have called up an engineer and said, there's something wrong with the dash, can you fix it?
17:47Exactly.
17:48We did so many laps, we almost wore a groove in the place, and you would have never considered a 19 possible in a V8 supercar.
17:54So, extraordinary at the moment.
17:57McLaughlin from Pye from Holdsworth.
17:59Wall, Davison, Winker, Bright, Perkins.
18:02Wood again in the top 10.
18:03And Dave Reynolds currently right on that cusp there.
18:07Winterbottom a little bit better at 11th.
18:09Stay with us.
18:10This is fantastic with five minutes remaining.
18:18Welcome back to Winton.
18:19The Armour All qualifying session lights up again with Nick Perkett going into second.
18:24120.4.
18:26Now, Tim Slade eclipses that time.
18:28We're watching Michael Caruso, who is on a flyer at the top of the timesheets.
18:33An extraordinary time.
18:351.19.9 is the one to beat.
18:37It belongs to Scott McLaughlin in the Volvo S60.
18:42This will be close for Caruso.
18:45He goes up to second.
18:47Coulthard's on another flyer.
18:49Two green boxes.
18:51He's already got one pole position.
18:53He's loving it out here.
18:56It's been 28 years since Volvo last had a pole in the Australian Touring Car Championship
19:01or V8s.
19:02And right now, Coulthard is in the position to knock him out at top spot.
19:07Watch for this number.
19:08He's been very fast to the first timing intermediates.
19:11And Fabian Coulthard punches out a 1 minute 19.6.
19:15A monster margin.
19:170.24 of a second.
19:19And we've got less than 90 seconds remaining.
19:21Wow.
19:23We said it before.
19:24Dale Wood has also popped up into third.
19:26Jason Bright.
19:28So they've got...
19:28BJR's got three cars in the top five.
19:31Ches Mostard now.
19:32Mop it up.
19:32Van Gisbergen.
19:3419.9 for Shane.
19:36Now, Coulthard's going on with it.
19:37In this subsequent lap, boys, to the first timing intermediates,
19:41he's bettered his own previous best.
19:43So keep an eye on Fabian Coulthard.
19:461 minute 19.6 is the target.
19:48This is the field exiting turn 12.
19:51And making the control line as we go back up to the approach at turn 9.
19:55McLaughlin's gone.
19:56Position 2.
19:57Gisbergen 3.
19:58Holdsworth 4.
19:59Mop it 5.
20:00Slade, Mostard, Wood, Bright, Caruso.
20:03We need to try and see whether or not this guy can actually improve on his number.
20:07While all this is happening, 24th position, Craig Lowndes, our championship leader.
20:1220th position, Jamie Winkup as Reynolds goes into position number 5.
20:17And don't discount McLaughlin because he did a half-paced first lap.
20:23And now, fastest first sector.
20:27He did a 21.9.
20:28It's very, very clever to get the front tyre and the rear tyre to come in in phase.
20:32So he's lost that 20.13 for Coulthard.
20:35So he went slightly slower.
20:37McLaughlin, fastest first sector.
20:39Five manufacturers in the top seven.
20:42Have a look at this lap.
20:44Scott McLaughlin coming out of turn 9.
20:48He's okay traffic-wise.
20:50So second sector.
20:51Well, there's nothing in it.
20:520.006.
20:54Absolutely nothing in it.
20:55Smoke out the back of Nick Percat's Commodore.
20:59Back on board the S60 with McLaughlin.
21:01This would be some effort if he could get it done.
21:07We know he's already won a race in the championship.
21:10He's never had a pole position.
21:12He has to make history here to do it.
21:151.19.6 is the time to beat.
21:18And McLaughlin can't get there.
21:20Two tenths off.
21:21Good job, mate.
21:21Me too.
21:23Good job, buddy.
21:261965 and, yeah, 1998.
21:28Well done.
21:28I spoke to Richard last night and said,
21:30have you sorted this power steering thing?
21:32He said, not yet.
21:33So if that's still a question mark in the background
21:35and it's not quite right, that's a mighty performance.
21:38So it's just under two tenths.
21:39The difference between first and second.
21:41A great effort from Fabian Coulthard.
21:43Back-to-back pole positions.
21:45James Moffat inside the top ten.
21:47Let's go and search of our championship contenders at this stage.
21:51And we have to keep flipping
21:52because we find Jamie Wincup in 21st
21:55and Craig Lowndes, the championship leader,
21:58in 23rd.
22:00Extraordinary Armourall qualifying session here at Winston.
22:18So the Armourall pole position winner twice today.
22:21Fabian Coulthard, Lockwood Racing.
22:23What a performance.
22:24Fifth career pole.
22:25Two from two, race seven and eight.
22:27Lockwood Racing guys thrilled.
22:28What about the numbers?
22:29At 20-0 for race one and 19-6 race two.
22:32It's Kiwi to Kiwi action.
22:34Here's Murph.
22:36In the BJR pit here with Fabian Coulthard.
22:39That was just unbelievable to watch.
22:41It must have been incredible sitting in that car
22:44trying to find the grip.
22:45Obviously, you betted it in the second qual by four tenths.
22:48I mean, just amazing.
22:50Yeah, it takes me a little bit to get excited,
22:52but, you know, that excited me.
22:54You know, to be able to do that,
22:55the grips out there is phenomenal.
22:56It's amazing.
22:57Like, mate, it feels like you can't do any wrong
22:59and you're just along for the ride,
23:01you hold on and it's just awesome.
23:02Well, congratulations.
23:03All right.
23:04Hey, Leonsie, well, a little bit better than you are,
23:10I'm guessing, mate.
23:11That's a first.
23:12I've never seen this happen with your team.
23:14Clearly, I was just watching you talking to your engineer.
23:16There is no simple answer to this.
23:18What do you make of it?
23:19Well, the first run, I actually think,
23:20got the best out of it.
23:21The second run, we really didn't change the car too much
23:24and we had some more understeer.
23:25So, yeah, it doesn't take much to go from front to back.
23:29Well, I wish you well, mate.
23:30It's going to be a hard slog from here.
23:31Jamie Winkup's over here.
23:32We might just see if we can quickly...
23:34Hey, Jamie, sorry to bother you, mate.
23:36I'll let you grab your sponsor's cap.
23:40Mate, 21-23, probably a first for this team.
23:43This grip thing is having a massive impact
23:45on what's going out on there.
23:46Spectacular watch, but that's bordering on bizarre.
23:48Yeah, it is.
23:49It is bizarre conditions out there,
23:50but it's the same for everyone.
23:52That's what motorsport's all about.
23:53We didn't quite get it right today
23:55and we paid the penalty.
23:57So, yeah, not wrapped about it,
23:59but we'll just keep working with the conditions we've got
24:01and see if we can move up the field.
24:03All right, good luck.
24:03You've given us a television spectacle anyway, mate.
24:05I reckon it'll be great to watch.
24:06Well, that's providing we've got pace.
24:07If we've got pace in the race,
24:08yeah, we should be able to come through,
24:10but that's for us to work out in the truck later on.
24:13All right, good luck with that, mate.
24:14Thanks, Liger. Cheers.
24:15Well, the new quality format has really mixed things around here
24:18for races seven and eight this afternoon.
24:19What about this guy, Russell Ingle,
24:20the most experienced driver in the field?
24:23Fastest yesterday in the wet,
24:24super quick in the dry.
24:26When they gripped up this car on new tyres,
24:28the power steering didn't handle it,
24:30so he is last on the grid for race number seven.
24:32He didn't even get out for qualifying for race number eight.
24:35They're changing the power steering unit
24:37in that car at the moment.
24:38He's hoping Rusty can get out there
24:40and take his place on the grid later on today
24:42and be competitive.
24:43Well, it's a huge day of sport right here on seven.
24:45We've got horse racing.
24:46We've got footy and the V8s.
24:48Bruce McEvaney is at Rose Hill Gardens
24:49for the Golden Slipper,
24:50but first, here's Basil Zemplis
24:52at Etihad Stadium with the footy.
24:55Thanks, Neil.
24:55Welcome to Etihad Stadium,
24:57where the roof is closed.
24:58It's Richmond and the Bulldogs today.
25:00Richmond are one and one.
25:01The Bulldogs yet to have a win in season 2014,
25:04but there's someone missing from the Richmond side today
25:07who hasn't been missing for seven years.
25:10How will the Tigers go without Brett Delidio?
25:12Maybe the door is open for the doggies.
25:14We've got a fascinating afternoon ahead of us
25:16here at Etihad.
25:17It is a massive day here at Rose Hill Gardens.
25:19It's the Golden Slipper Stakes.
25:21The two is new.
25:22We're $3.5 million.
25:23The richest two-year-old race in the world.
25:25Tommy Berry with Gay Waterhouse.
25:27What a moment that would be.
25:28And we've also got this unbeaten Philly earthquake
25:30who's trying to win a second Golden Slipper
25:33for Peter Snowden,
25:34who finishes up a dali in about three weeks' time.
25:36Plus the BMW with the Melbourne Cup champion,
25:39Fiorente,
25:39and another Group 1 race,
25:41racing at its very best.
25:42Back to you, Neil.
25:43Looking forward to the V8 supercars.
25:44We are.
25:45Thanks, Bruce.
25:45Thanks, boys.
25:46It's a feast of sport on seven this afternoon.
25:48And how about the Kiwis?
25:49They dominate qualifying race number eight.
25:51Shane Van Gisburgh and Fabian Coulthard
25:53and Scotty McLaughlin
25:54blistering pace here at Winton.
25:56And we've got race number seven coming up live very shortly.
26:00Stay with us.
