00:00We're live right around the country the V8 Supercars on 7 and the first of our
00:07super sprint format weekend so two 100k races to come. Craig Lowndes will start
00:12from the front row alongside his teammate he leads the championship after being on
00:17the podium all weekend at Adelaide including a race win and so we've been
00:21asking you can Lowndesie go on to win the championship this year it's a
00:25resounding yes Craig Lowndes fans have voted via our 7 Sport app or the V8
00:31Supercars website we'll be asking you more questions but there is breaking news
00:35on that man Larco fill us in. Yeah there is Matty and I'm down here at Craig's car now
00:39now we won't bog down on it too much because there's a there's conjecture over
00:43in Craig's second qualifying session not his first that won't affect where he is
00:47now see this little aperture on the door here this is so marshals can get in and
00:51grab this it's a polycarbonate door so they can rip it if they've got to get in
00:54now I've just had a long chat with Mark Dutton over there the team manager
00:58these guys are convinced they didn't break the rule they reckon they're
01:01within the rules it's vague the area there's no doubt about that
01:04so this is not over yet stay tuned this is going to be a red hot topic this
01:07afternoon for the second race. Larco something else that is red hot at the
01:12moment on Channel 7 is My Kitchen Rules the two girls Thalia and Bianca. Bianca you
01:16girls are here because a new thing for Tasmania this weekend is flavours of the
01:20region and you were cooking all day yesterday. Yeah we were cooking they're using
01:24all Tassie produce lots of stuff to choose from lots of slow cooked meats and
01:27everything so you've got to get there and try it. And you girls were lucky enough
01:30to go for a hot lap with Fabian Coulthard yesterday now Thalia your face in the car
01:36that's probably the best reaction I've ever seen genuine fear I was so scared I
01:41think everyone just talked it up so much before and they got me so nervous like
01:44this grown men were saying how scary it was so I just kind of lost it when I got in there but it was awesome fun.
01:49And the next episode of My Kitchen Rules airs Sunday night 6.30 what can we expect from that one?
01:54Well Sunday night it's head-to-head battles so Bianca and I are seeing Bree and Jessica the South
01:59Australia mums so that should be a hard one. Looking forward to it thank you very much
02:03girls enjoy your time here at Tasmania. James Courtney hey James great starting
02:09position second row of the grid but you are going to be on the outside of turn two
02:12you know that how you gonna attack this one mate? Just hopefully my old mate muscle here beside me gives me a bit of room so
02:17went and had a chat with him just before and yeah so it's gonna be interesting look
02:23you know muscle's pretty clean so I don't think he's gonna fire me off or anything but
02:27I'm more concerned about the hairpin mate you know what it's like all the
02:30Constantina I've got whatever it is 23 24 cars or 20 something behind us and so
02:36it's gonna be pretty interesting down there so just trying to keep it clean
02:39and try and get out of this first lap nice and cleanly. Let me give you the hot tip mate you
02:44just said that you reckon Russell Ingall's pretty clean there's your biggest mistake
02:47mate so you need to pick your game up but good luck. He did say don't go to the outside at turn
02:52three so I don't know what that's all about. Best of luck mate nice to see you up here.
02:57Russell Ingall you thought you got away from this bloke next to one of you James Courtney after
03:02leaving the team last year and you're stuck next to him again. Yeah well at least I'm sitting
03:07next to him at the right end of the grid yeah there's a few class acts around me I can tell you
03:12um it's been a while since I've been up this end of the grid but uh I'm going to enjoy it you know
03:16this is uh this is what I like doing I like racing with the good guys you know and uh mate uh I've got
03:23the eyes on put it that way. Now you're very competitive but James did come up and wish you
03:27all the best up well I assume that's what he was saying to you. No he said he just went to the toilet
03:32and he's wiping his hands all over me he's a grot bag honestly. Now Russell can it happen this can
03:38it happen in this race can we see the enforcer on the podium? Oh look I like I said when when I get
03:45this close to the front I start getting serious you know I mess around a bit when I'm at the back
03:50when I'm at the front she's eyes on and uh I'll give it a good swing like can't wait good luck
03:56nothing to lose. Hey uh Frosty I wish you could hear though just talking to Russell Ingall I wish you
04:00could hear what he's saying there's two things are going to happen here mate one he's going to get that
04:03excited he's going to just drive off or he's pretty excited about being up the front he could
04:08take everyone out that tries to get by him. Yeah as long as he takes the one out in front of him not
04:12the ones behind him but um he's done a good job but isn't it funny that the way the series is now
04:17he's p3 and I think the next one he's 20 that's how close the championship is so I'm sure he's going
04:22to make the most of it when you get up the front you've got to try and get the results so uh
04:26I'm sure he'll be enforcing as they they like to call him. Let me just quickly ask you about that mate
04:300.6 of a second and 0.8 of a second in the two respective qualifying sessions between the whole
04:35field um you've got to dig really deep here it's a very short intense lap great qualifying mate but
04:40it's going to get that much harder with all these cars around you. Yeah it's uh it's so so close so um
04:46you know you've got to do the lap and in that second quality I got the lap but I'm p3 so uh we'll try
04:51and get through this one hopefully have a good car it's going to be tight and uh yeah watch it watch it
04:56watch it it's going to be a good race. A lot of Ford fans relying on your pal do well. Chas Moss at the
05:02last time you were racing at uh Simmons Plain was in a Formula Ford and it was a good weekend for you
05:06just inside the 10 for this one. Yeah for sure we'll see uh hopefully a little bit of track
05:11knowledge will help me in this one back in the Formula Ford days had a good run so I'm pretty
05:14excited to be here on supercars a super competitive field and uh hopefully we can edge up a few spots in
05:19this one. It's obviously been a tough tough start to the year for yourself um obviously coming off the back
05:24of that that damage at clip so we're looking to get a good solid result in this one. Yeah back in my
05:30Adelaide car now and she feels straight as a whistle so uh ready to go. Good luck. Yeah looking forward to
05:37seeing Chas Moss back in action there's the Premier Elect of Tasmania Will Hodgman with his boys here
05:43today. It is Tasmania's biggest sporting event when the V8 supercars roll into town so the Premier
05:50Elect is soaking up all the atmosphere and uh spending a wonderful day here at the V8 supercars
05:55and what a story. Russell Ingle 50 years of age so what do you reckon? Can he finish on the podium?
06:00He's done 37 races in his career here over 14 events. He has finished second here twice so the
06:07pedigree is there. The years are under the belt we know that too but I'm just I just can't wait to see
06:13how Russell is going to attack this race. Qualifying has been his Achilles heel he's only got one pole
06:18position next to his name and that was 13 years ago and the excitement in his voice about starting
06:24up the front and messing up with the big guys well that's something that's really going to play out
06:29in a fantastic way so let's just recap where we are for you Simmons Plains we first started racing here
06:34in the Australian Touring Car Championship back in 1969 a lap is done in a tick over 50 seconds 2.4
06:41kilometres crucial spots of course down at turn four the hairpin the big back long straight where they get
06:47up to 266 kilometres per hour and then that rather complex area through turns one two and three
06:55this place lends itself to great racing and a lot of incidents along the way Will Davison
07:02Erebus Motorsport Mercedes AMG. Rick Kelly for Jack Daniels Racing
07:10he'll start from down in 19th alongside his brother so the championship points score
07:14Craig Lowndes on the podium all weekend at Adelaide 282 points and leads the championship
07:21hasn't won the title since 1999 when Mark Scaife and Craig uh Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton asked him
07:28earlier today can you win it I love the answer it was a definitive yes it certainly was
07:33check out the starting lineup for race number four of the championship and here's an all Red Bull Racing
07:43Australia front row with Jamie Winkup and Craig Lowndes the dominant forces Red Bull have had four
07:48poles so far this year amazing Russell Engel what a terrific performance and he's alongside Courtney then
07:53it's David Reynolds and Mark Winterbottom flying the Ford flag brilliantly seventh and eighth we've got
07:58Scotty McLachlan with the question mark over the power steering on the car Van Gisbergen alongside him
08:02for VIP pet foods then Chas Mostert the Ford Pepsi Max alongside the old guy from that team the year
08:09previous Will Davison he's not that old but he's a former teammate in that operation Lee Holdsworth and
08:13Garth Tanner 13 and 14 it's good to see the Erebus cars have been strong this weekend Scotty Pye and
08:20Tim Slade from 15th and 16th then we run into a few of the Nissans James Moffat he's Dan Allen won
08:26here five times Todd Kelly's won here before two so three of the Nissans in a row with Rick Kelly
08:31starting from 19th Jason Bright who was a winner here last year he split his teammate Claymeer Kulfar's
08:40two wins he's going to find himself mid-pack and we go back to Dale Wood in position 24 and Nick
08:44Percat remember his qualifier was extinguished when he found the grappler turn four and activated
08:55a red flag so he goes to the back of the field a new livery four car triple two you'll check it out
09:01throughout the race heavy haulage australia racing now sponsoring it looks pretty funky too on board we
09:07are the whole stack of cars and a whole stack of cameras to give you the best angle of the best
09:12touring car category in the world super cheap auto racing and Tim Slade start from 16th and there's
09:21Win Cup he's just arrived here after a bad finish to the clips all weekend first time in nine years
09:30and he hasn't walked away from the opening round of the V8 supercar championship either first or second
09:36Scotty McLaughlin he might look like Popeye after the end of the day with those big forearms bulging with no
09:42power steering in the uh Volvo S60 it's going to be hard work behind they've made some changes to it I
09:48just spoke to Richard Holway about it and they've made some changes to the plumbing again for the
09:53start of this so we'll just see what happens in terms of his physical condition at the hairpin
09:58especially has a big impact nobody has won more races at this circuit than Jamie Winkup
10:04eight wins next to his name Garth Tand has won seven times here Craig Lowndes has won six times but this
10:12time they've got the enforcer hovering on the second row of the grid
10:16wouldn't that be a return to racing for Russell Engel there he is ahead of us so look out for car 23
10:26he's on a search and destroy mission to the top step if he can do it but he doesn't get away well
10:32Russell has been swamped Craig Lowndes shoots ahead and now Russell Engel's going to have to fight his way
10:39back through he dropped at least two maybe three spots off the start
10:48through turn three James Courtney said it's like wrestling a bear through there
10:55down at the hairpin 50 kilometers an hour big switch back to the left do you take the high side
11:01or the low side they all get through cleanly riding on board with Winkup now they're back straight away
11:08wind into their nose so about 260 k's side by side it's Will Davison and Chance Mostert
11:18and behind them is Garth Tander
11:22and they get through cleanly but Mostert will be the loser and a little bump
11:27and that's it over and done one lap in under a minute bad jump there for Jamie Winkup Lowndes a very
11:33good start he missed the kick and not too much wheel spin Lowndes was able to easily get across
11:40in front and dominate the first corner of this race Engel bad start he's caught up in between the FPR
11:46sandwich with Reynolds and Winnebonna look at Van Gisbergen around the outside and uh Reynolds has gone
11:53round the outside of Engel van Gisbergen trying to do the same he's got some body work loose in the
11:58back left hand corner of that car it's torn the side off the bumper assembly but Russell's initial
12:04jump was poor he had wheels spin or bog down but the secondary part of the start he recovered a bit
12:08but he's really getting a brutal brutalization out there at the moment they're jumping around on him
12:13as I can hear the race director asking staff to look carefully at the back left hand corner of that car
12:18you can see how unsettled the bolter of scott mcglochen was
12:25he rode the curves there alongside shane van gisbergen so giz needs to post points here because
12:35he's going to start at the back of the field in the next race
12:40so jamie had a look up the inside of craig there and he's got a shallower exit line
12:45what he'll be hoping to do is get into position to look at this it's on again back at the hairpin
12:49and this is Engel on the right Reynolds on the left and this puts Russell in the box seat when they get
12:54down to turn six but he's got to go the long way there was a little bit of contact on that opening lap
13:00between them and Russell's got the elbows up
13:05lock break
13:08frosty had a bird's eye view of Engel getting up the inside of Reynolds
13:14which is pretty lively
13:17that was a good pass Russell Engel well constructed good maneuver got him on the
13:22outside through the kink and then on the inside for turn six we're on board there with McLaughlin
13:27this is a pretty fierce battle with van gisberger in the middle of this
13:31david reynolds slid beneath the bridge then and that would have made his exit fractionally slower
13:37and that's tightened the pack up even more behind him
13:42but Winterbottom just trying to position to the outside now to do what Russell Engel did
13:46on david reynolds he's got good corner exit speed Winterbottom and he's going to put that move on
13:52he's done it quite well van gisberger's going to have a look too oh but he's going to have to hold
13:59it up reynolds turns in on him the vip pet foods commodore goes through good job that was a very good
14:06pass and david's car's sliding a lot at the back at the moment and just that little bit of
14:12instabilities cost him dearly so a couple of spots in half a lap they're gone
14:21now that front four just settle down ingles got a big gap between him and james courtney
14:30the inside and four he'll get him oh he hasn't got enough steering lock to actually pull it down tight
14:35so a little crunch there delayed davison that makes him slow off the corner tander's having a crack
14:41it's all happening in tassie
14:48the first of two 100 kilometer races this afternoon live on seven sport
14:54the tire power tasmania 400 craig lounge our race leader
14:58he's 0.3 of a second ahead of his teammate jamie winkup who has put down fastest times
15:05over the last two laps now look at this a little bit of give and take a little bit of push and
15:10shove did he jump did he go too fast he got a great jump the man out of that picture was russell ingle
15:16so watch russell start this is from david reynolds behind him
15:22they just swamped him it was a terrible start for russell like it didn't let the handbrake off
15:30so when it first jumped it just didn't even move this is the
15:33drama in the middle of the field with fabian garth and around the outside is david wall so
15:39there were three abreast trying to get into turn one and the real winners and losers out of this is
15:44tander's jumped five spots dave reynolds back six spots good a lot of contact good save there from
15:50garth a lot of opposite lock on that car to get through most that also down five spots
15:54a bit of other stuff going on in the pack fabian coultard reporting no drive there is middle of
16:01screen at the moment the lockwood entry so he's down the order slightly tenth he was a winner here
16:05last year jason brighton also down the order at the moment they changed that car dramatically back to
16:11last year's setup he was a winner here last year so they've abandoned the experiments that they were
16:15running with yesterday larko yeah just picking up on you boys noticing mostert down in the pack i was
16:20watching him early in the race when you come out of the hairpin if you're going to put yourself on
16:24the outside nothing wrong with that and you run down into turn six on the outside all very good but
16:30you've got to have a look in your mirror if there's cars lined up behind the car you're trying to go around
16:35the outside off chances are you're not going to lose one spot you're going to lose two three and four
16:39exactly what happened to chas you've got to think three corners ahead all the time around here
16:45it's a rapid lap the other thing that's changed today relative to yesterday it temps up but so
16:50is the wind direction different from yesterday so it was a southerly yesterday and it's quite
16:54noticeably cooler today the temperature is up and the wind direction's 180 degrees it's right on
16:59the nose of jack perkins car there car number 18 for jeldwen so jack at the moment is 21st it's an
17:06angry pack because and there's his team boss charlie schwerko who said to me yesterday he's really
17:11impressed with the way in which jack's working his way into the team learning to understand the car
17:16getting the most from it and he's going to have a much better start starting position in the next
17:23race compo they made some changes in that short break between the two qualifying sessions and jack will
17:29start race two this afternoon from 12th spot so now win cut's got into that groove
17:35look at that our last four laps he's done better times in three out of the four and he's fastest
17:43to the second sector on this lap again so he's closed the gap he's now getting himself into position to
17:49have a crack at lounge it's a 42 lap race so there's no need to get a hurry along really at this stage but
17:56when win cups in this frame of mind he usually doesn't mess around the guy that's having a nice
18:04protected run at the moment is james courtney he's got lots of fresh air in front of him and he's got
18:09a little bit of a buffer to russell ingall fourth at the moment so that's convenient here's
18:16that curb camp which actually showed you the gap from this group back to the second uh
18:21sorry third car in the pack there which was courtney wanted to make the point also that
18:25through time to continue to complain about the car he's got a bad cold this weekend as well so
18:30his terminology not mine i'm all bunged up i went and spoke to jamie winkup i said it's one of the best
18:36laps i've seen you put on he said how out of control he was at turn six trying to get it stopped and then
18:42he said i thought i bugged it i bumped the curb in that last corner he said i thought it was over i'm
18:47going to be third or fourth so he was really surprised by the eventual lap time on board now with dave reynolds
18:56slip back to 11th
19:06so dave reynolds as i said earlier one of the guys that lost a lot of ground early in this race he's in
19:1011th watch this 240 all the way back through the gears on the brakes down to 50.
19:19meantime lowndes has responded with the fastest lap of the race with the pressure from his teammate 52.1
19:31remember there's a bit of a headwind today so just a little less than the peak values that we
19:38often quote so we normally see up to 265 down the back straight so about 5k softer there with the breeze
19:45they've had a little snatch of the gear lever and the steering there on the gear ship
19:52but third to fourth when you come off turn six and a mechanical black flag by the way for
19:56shane van gisbergen so the race directors just made that call back with more in a moment
20:00welcome back flat out racing you're on board with mark winterbottom who's trying to hunt down
20:12russell engel who is in fourth but the true believers are there for the enforcer remember
20:18he started from third dropped a bunch of spots off the grid and he's now trying to push his way back
20:24onto the podium so let us know what you think v8supercars.com.au seven sport app 81
20:31finish this one off by saying he will get another spot at least between now and lap 42. he's clinging
20:37to that position at the moment in fourth and the back of it sliding a lot just as we were coming out of
20:42the break then we're observing the back of the car right here at turn six it was in evidence as well
20:47and he was having to just glide the car and at the same time protect because he's got mark
20:52winterbottom all over him it's about three and a half odd seconds up the road to james courtney
20:57before you can achieve that podium and off up the road here at turn four at the hairpin rick kelly
21:03jack daniels racing running wide and damage contact todd kelly and jack perkins and todd was on the radio
21:08just as we went to the break saying i think i've broken an upright and that's in the garage at the
21:13moment that car number seven for the repair and that upset obviously both those cars and resulted
21:18in this and that's that's just cause and effect isn't it i mean rick went off as he comes back on jack
21:23tries to get out of the way and ends up clunking into todd had a standout weekend here back in 2008
21:31toddler he went from 10th to victory in the jack daniels commodore and then had a pair of thirds for the
21:38rest of the weekend but it hasn't started well this one so 47 versus four is slade against holdsworth
21:47and they're battling for position 14. ahead of them is chas mostett
21:54tim slade together with james courtney nick percat they're off with phil young their trainer next week
21:59and a training camp to get beaten up for a few days running and riding and swimming and all the
22:05rest of it he's getting fairly beaten up there at the moment he's in the 14th position at the moment
22:09tim slade everywhere you look there's a serious battle going on so you've got uh 12th and 13th
22:15scott pie and chas mostett they're very close david wall's very close in all this you blink and you're
22:20in trouble there at the moment the spread across the entire field uh shane van gisbergen took his penalty
22:26to get that body work removed so if you discount him it's 27 seconds covering 24 or 23 cars i should
22:33say and they're on their 20th lap
22:40and at the front guys the um the gap stretched out a bit craiglowns
22:46to wink up it's hovering around eight tenths of a second now it was pretty much on a second and
22:52perhaps this will explain why so the last turn that'll do it lead to disaster that'll definitely
22:58do it right rear in the dirt rooster tail rocks flying no speed in that and the corresponding
23:05heart rate goes well north well and remember it's fast it's 165k the slowest part of that quarter it's
23:11more like 180 or 190 kilometers an hour when you're out in the panic out of control boys while we're in
23:18that last ad break uh shane van gisbergen in the vip commodore who has been very competitive all this
23:22weekend was running very strongly has had to come in and have a pit stop uh black flag mechanical black
23:27flag because parts were falling off the car now this is his rear left bumper we saw flapping around
23:32and as you can see it's a composite material it's actually very light i was speaking to frank
23:36adamson the category technical manager who's got to make these decisions he hates making the decisions
23:41but as you can see that in itself is not dangerous but what he's worried about if it flies off
23:46goes into the crowd or something it is dangerous so that's why he does it speaking of we've got a
23:50car flying off down there at the end of the back straight and it is rick kelly so that's going to
23:57trigger a safety car he's just going to dig a deeper hole i think it's a high speeder too that one but the
24:08gravel trap does its job beautifully looks like there's some brake drama there with that one matt you
24:12don't normally end up that far down the road like that rick come into this race fourth in the
24:18championship remember the best start he's had for a long time header's safety car will be activated
24:24so we'll grab a break back soon
24:31now this has changed the game completely this safety car craig lowndes was in
24:36cruise control at the front of the field but now this compresses everything it brings them all back in
24:41in to the argument wing cup be nestled in behind lounge courtney in third russell ingall now in
24:48fourth the rolling restart to come
24:56this is juicy right on half time it's a little incentive that russell ingall needed to be able to
25:01just claw that margin back gets him right in touch again with james courtney everybody's tires cool out
25:07reinvigorates they all have a chance to talk to their engineers about car behavior make some little
25:12brake bias or anti-roll bar adjustments and here's the reason we've got the pedas chrysler safety car
25:16out rick kelly firing off at turn six into the gravel trap which arrested the car
25:22in just the right spot without making the fence thankfully and he's out there now but on the radio
25:27subsequent to that he was talking to them about the front brakes mark scaphes said before the break that
25:32would possibly explain why a car goes off at such high speed that there had to be some sort of a
25:36technical issue and certainly rick suspects so something to do with the front brakes that was
25:41the early part of the conversation that they'll now verify when they look at that car so remember there's
25:45been a change to the restarts the speed has been increased for the lead car and it has to stay in between
25:5560 kilometers per hour and 80. all cars must remain directly in line and within one car length by the
26:03acceleration zone so the two acceleration zone boards as damian white man in charge of the rules
26:15so there we go there's two boards and the positioning of these boards i think is critical you can see it
26:21there behind the united petroleum side at the exit of turn seven that's the first one and then the
26:28second one is right up towards the control line just back to 80 when you go through so once the lead
26:35car gets into that zone he's in control he can go whenever he wants and if you're smart in this
26:43particular case you go early you go straight away because the rest of the field is still coming
26:48around the final bend so the driving standards observer jason bagwana at the driver's briefing
26:53last night asked the drivers which in this case will be craig lounge has the responsibility when the
26:59safety car peels away to choose a speed and level off at that speed between the 60 and the 80. what he
27:06doesn't want to see is accelerating or decelerating in that zone so he wants to settle at a speed and then
27:12go at the driver's choosing this has really helped russell lingo guys it was a big gap back to courtney
27:18this is putting him back in contention to get on the podium
27:2070 or cars to stop weaving in a single line less than one kilometer from the car in front one
27:26about a car length from the car in front there's to be no passing before they get to the control line
27:31they can overlap they can't pass so they're coming up to the zone got to get the car straight before
27:38you gas it up
27:42so lounge is in control it's all up to him and it's up to them to chase so he goes right on the corner
27:48it makes it hard for the others
27:50there was a bit of weirdness back in the pack and it's continuing i've got a feeling that garland
27:56may have gone early there uh that'll be curious to have a look at the transponders will tell the
28:02story but i've got a feeling that something might have happened with the reason why tander shot
28:07around him is a bit strange and i'm pretty sure chas most had just ran into the back at somebody one of
28:11the wilson cars probably scotty pye look at the damage to the front of car six and now he's losing
28:17bits and pieces out the front and i reckon you're right crompo garth tander did get caught up
28:22and i think what he tried to do was make sure that he didn't overtake he didn't overlap and maybe in
28:28doing that trying to redress the situation there's some contact there back to racing slade on the
28:34outside of bright the wilson security dick johnson racing cars uh car 18 hit lane drive through penalty
28:41jack perkins driving infringement so uh perkins is going to tour the pit lane the two wilson security
28:49dick johnson racing cars got together up at the hairpin on the restart there too well and and they
28:54made contact in turn two so scott pye was down the inside and smashed into the side of david wall
29:00yeah the jack perkins uh black flag by the way is for contact on michael caruso car number 36 i
29:05didn't explain that so out of all that lounge did the perfect job you watch him as soon as he gets
29:11there he goes now keep your eyes on tander oh yeah he's passed before the control line so
29:20that's uh it's going to be an issue
29:24look at this inside that's what they don't want inside a single team garage
29:43awkward situation there win cup having a lunge it made us stop and think for a moment while we
29:48were considering that start here comes courtney he's well in the game here one little hiccup and it
29:54changes everything
29:57so one two and three is now win cup courtney and widderbottom who's got past the angle
30:04that was a really big dive and what happens is once you once you've made that commitment you've made
30:10the decision you ride you ride it so as craig goes to turn in it's unavoidable at that point not to make
30:17contact here it is down the inside on the dirty part of the road he's battling to stop craig turns
30:23it in he was probably up far enough to command track position and they make contact pretty heavily
30:29lounge series leader out in the paddock on board now with wink up he's come from about a car length
30:36back now watch he battles to stop he gets it stopped he's up there he fed in second gear
30:41he runs into the front door so he's up far enough and the and the contact was significant enough
30:48to unload craig lounge so stressful conditions in here for the guys mark dutton in the center
30:56overseeing the operations now mark dutton david couch here in jamie winkup's corner jeremy moore remains
31:03craig lounge's chief engineer and he might carry some scars from that jamie winkup because when you make that
31:08level of contact in this spot here big chance to damage the steering on that side of the car front
31:14right corner in this instance and be curious to see whether or not it just settles down in its pace
31:19but that's going to put big stress in the garage yeah down here with mark dutton mate usually you're
31:23one of these two guys you're in an awkward position at the moment mate look to me like jamie was pretty
31:28well in there yeah i think he was up past the b maybe craig didn't see him you see craig from the in
31:33car looks like possibly turned in um we'll have to have a look after yeah the the first and foremost
31:39we tell the boys don't touch each other so uh they'll both be copping a bit of a flogging after
31:43the race no matter the outcome you think they'll be dirty with each other though mate or you think
31:46they're good enough mates and been together long enough to see through it oh in the long run they'll
31:50see through it but uh right now i think there's uh there's a bit of red mist and they wouldn't be
31:53happy either with themselves or with with each other depending on uh who made the mistake all right
31:59thanks for the heads up it's pretty clear mark dutton's going to wield a big stick at the end of
32:03this race regardless of the result because he just doesn't want that happening at red bull racing
32:08australia and it places lounges in 11th from battling for the lead of the race that's a big deal
32:14so is that heart rate number for james courtney he's chasing down wind cup stay with us
32:18craig lounges is desperately trying to salvage this situation which will now be under investigation
32:30post-race the contact between cars one and triple eight so wind cup and lounges
32:36will be investigated and lounges now back up tonight so he's made up a couple of spots
32:41and down here at the hairpin oh contact
32:48on david wall james courtney looking back to mark winterbottom who's been super quick all day
32:56he started in sixth he's up to third
33:05in the last five years at this circuit mark winterbottom has finished no worse than sixth
33:12in every race but only one win next to his name and his history here and he's got a hundred
33:17percent finishing record here too matt he's had an extraordinary run over a long period of time
33:23an interesting one to resolve the car one versus car triple eight crawl at turn six
33:30it's going to be a little bit difficult to unravel that one and but it's the right thing to do to be
33:35investigated there was a time where nothing happened when it was within the team but it's still an all it
33:41does need to be looked at and it will be looked at i totally agree and when you're the series
33:45leader big implications and especially we'll talk about it soon it might end up with a penalty for the next race
33:53so if that happened to lounge you go into the day as the leader and you know two races on you're you're away
33:58so courtney memory finished off the clips of 500 with a fantastic victory and celebrated with some
34:08crowd surfing to go with it and he's in a good frame of mind
34:11it's 2.4 seconds behind win cup
34:19man if you can just look down there this is why davy reynolds just come in this is called a
34:22delaminated delaminated front tire now why that is he's obviously flat spotted it at some point but
34:27you get a really good look at the steel belts of the tire there now the carcass works and uh he would
34:32have felt that now he's a drama and uh he'll be out of the game there while i'm here just quickly come out
34:35here you'll see right there is the ford performance racing pit next to the red bull pit when that
34:42little incident happened over there i heard an almighty cheer come out of the ford performance
34:46racing pit and i went sitting there what what's everyone happy about is it someone's birthday
34:49let me tell you they're pretty happy about proceedings we saw thanks like we saw david reynolds
34:56just getting out of chas most its way a little earlier and you could see he was mucking around with
35:00the steering so he was aware of the fact that something wasn't right with the front of that car
35:05the s60 the volvo of scotty mclaughlin if you missed v8 extra earlier in the day
35:11make sure you jump online and find the video of scott and robert dalbert and their trip
35:16up to sweden in between our last event in this one boy did they have some fun on the ice
35:24they also toured the polestar and volvo factories in gothenburg
35:30robert showed him around his hometown in the northeast of sweden
35:36scotty even took a jandal into the winter as you do so this is a really good battle
35:43matt because scott mclaughlin's made quite good progress right up behind eagles so it's battling
35:48for fourth position you see russell there he's been struggling with oversteer through the final corner
35:55the whole race we were on board with mark winter bottom earlier and showed that scott struggling
36:00with his power steering problem we'll see the steering technique down at the hairpin which we
36:06know that he's really battling there so this is your leader
36:09and what a good job jamie wickup has done courtney winter bottom there's the battle there with engel
36:16mclaughlin tanda davison there's a lot of drama there at the restart which will get our brain around also
36:21those pulsar split times just clicked over to show us that russell ingle is two and a half seconds
36:28adrift of third spot mark winter bottom that's probably the biggest one as we roll through the splits
36:35because the restart just didn't really help russell in terms of positions
36:40he doesn't quite have the car speed at the moment does he russell it's just not quite there
36:44it's too loose at the back for him at the moment
36:48gisberg has done a good job in recovery aided by the safety car keep in mind he's had to come in
36:52pit lane drag off a bit of body work and go back out there so 12 means a decent haul of points and
36:57he might get more at the moment that's david wall that he's attacking i had a good conversation
37:01with him earlier and he obviously had really good car speed at adelaide here good car at the
37:07australian grand prix meeting and then for him at this place really struggled he hasn't been able
37:13to get the car stopped at this spot he's where he's been complaining about he's complaining about that
37:18now because he actually dived in there too late at that point he might be a bit of strife for that
37:23because he pushed more wide and he really couldn't hold it online so although he's made good progress
37:29there might be a little bit of chat to shane after the event with that pass on david wall turn four
37:41pretty much see that one coming it just yeah it was brewing here's rob dalgren
37:48rick kelly
37:49looking on so both the kelly brothers on the sidelines and jason bright
37:55big lock up in behind tim slade there he's been on the radio quite a bit jason bright they've not
38:00found a happy spot with the setup of that car
38:06these two fellas arguing over at the moment that's nick percat right behind
38:10lee holdsworth tucked in under him and giving him a little under him yes being the operative
38:17big rebuild of course for the car that we're looking back at team boc
38:24last time we saw it in championship action it was flying through the air at adelaide in a scary
38:28crash but a tremendous rebuild job captured by brad jones racing
38:35courtney and winter bottom continue to slug it out that's wing cup further up the road three laps for him to go
38:51james has been sweating oh look at this contact and actually frosty did the right thing then he knew that
38:56he gave him a knock he lifted the throttle and waited actually penalized himself james has been sweating with
39:02this pressure in recent laps tim edwards in the garage team principal pepsi max sport performance
39:07racing it's been a good job by winter bottom he's been chipping away hard in this game he cleared russell
39:13england all that kerfuffle early on and he's been applying a lot of pressure it's going to cost him
39:18a couple of laps though to be able to get back now in touch with james after that exactly now he's driven
39:24really well probably been the driver of the race lounge around the outside gee that's wild that's
39:30fast it's so easy to make the grass and then make the fence either on the right or the left depending
39:36on the trajectory when you get to the grass there's a healthy battle going on there with clavier that's
39:41for eighth and ninth position winter bottom's done a very good job and i thought just then with a little
39:47backup that was quite a responsible thing proper he could have run him on he could actually spun him
39:52around if he stayed on the throttle he got right out of the throttle and and sorted that out for
39:56themselves and remember this time last year fabian called pulled a pass on winter bottom almost exactly
40:03the same and and was actually overtaken for the lead so he'll have that in his memory
40:11fabian blocking now down at the end of the main straight this is where lounge went off with his
40:16team mate
40:20to go quite a run last year for fabian i bet he just couldn't wait to get back here i know he's
40:26not feeling well with the flu but he qualified on the front row last year and all three races won two of
40:31them and it really kick-started that part of the season he went on to claim his first championship
40:39poll at pukekohe and then win another race a little bit later in austin texas momentum's a big thing in
40:47any sport especially motorsport so win cup that's the gap three seconds back to james courtney the incident
40:56will be investigated between him and his teammate craig lowndes but after starting on the front row
41:04in pole position jamie winkup takes the checkered flag
41:07courtney and winner bottom on the podium russell engel in fourth and that shows you the gravity of the
41:23situation great job good drive we'll talk to you when you get back it's not often a bloke can win a
41:30race and apologize straight up it's the first thing he said back to the team so he'll take it
41:40car speeds there doubt about that
41:45so engel in fourth scott mclaughlin in fifth garth tander up to sixth will davidson for erebus
41:52in seventh craig lowndes he ends up in eighth so he saved himself and made up another three spots
41:59after the incident and let's take a look at this last corner last lap we'd seen it we'd seen it coming
42:05and it eventually did and how does he hold on to that lounge what a great save what a great bit of car
42:13control not too many guys in this field but get away with that one car out of control fabian
42:19coulthard ninth and scott pie finishes tenth shane van gisbergen after having to come through and
42:27clear loose body work went to the back of the field finished in 11th so that's good signs for him
42:32in the next race i think he will start from the rear of the grid to mark's point though he may get
42:37looked at for the dive bomb on david wall after turn four
42:41so that makes nine victories at this circuit for jamie wing cup
42:51certainly helps his championship cause
42:55jamie won't be looking forward to having to manage the next few minutes of his life no no this is ugly
42:59stuff we've all had to live this one this is you know inter-team politics and drama with guys that
43:06are at the front of the field craig leading the championship gets out shakes hands with david
43:12couchie david's the new engineer responsible for jamie this year mark dutton will be the guy
43:17i'll have to manage this chris brady there on the left who's the team physio
43:25and see that that's a fascinating play isn't it because mark dutton was
43:29the man in jamie's corner in the most successful run in v8 supercars and now he's going to have to be
43:34well the principal here he's going to have to be
43:38the man who comes down hard on these guys and it'll be interesting to see because i don't think
43:44roland will get involved in this he'll make sure that the new team structure handles this jeremy
43:49moore there is craig lowndes engineer very very good operator yeah so i think we're going to go outside
43:57i think we're going outside rather than staying in the garage
44:05we're so used to the craig lounge smile but we know when the smile is hurting
44:10well what we've also seen too matt is the level of intensity
44:15jamie firstly congratulations mate great win but uh it's quite evident what's going on in the room here
44:20you're disturbed look like you're in there but it's it's difficult when it's into team isn't it
44:24uh yeah absolutely i'm uh yeah it's an unfortunate situation i'm sorry about the situation lansy uh
44:30he deserved to finish higher than that but um i'm certainly not sorry about the mover and i think i
44:34was uh it was a textbook move down the inside i was well and truly in there it was it was a standard
44:40move um yeah that's unfortunately that's the way i go i feel like i haven't done anything wrong but uh
44:45it's uh it's disappointing that we didn't have a one-two which is what the team deserved mate can i
44:48say i don't think you should either just looking at the replay and you'll get to see them yourself
44:51you there's no doubt you you're in there you're up if it was anyone else we wouldn't have taken any
44:55notice of it yeah yeah yeah it's unfortunate i'm gonna have an awkward conversation with lounge
44:59here we've been mates for 10 years and hopefully i can continue but um i'll try to smooth it over as
45:03much as i can but as i say i was just out there racing hard and uh you get that sometimes you're a
45:08good sportsman mate that's good stuff well done thanks liger james courtney frank the tank was out in
45:13form at the clipsville 500 a nice way to start off the weekend here at simmons plains second in the podium
45:20yeah exactly i thought uh for a minute when lansy and and jamie come together down the bottom there
45:24that he might be out again but uh you know he managed to stay in front those cars were both
45:27pretty strong um but no we did pretty well to uh to hold off mark the car in the end looked after
45:32his tires really quite well so it was pretty exciting race um but yeah we're starting 17th
45:37and the next one so i got a lot of work to do then but uh no it was good i know you're a very
45:42fit guy you got out of the car you sort of looked a bit hot it's a small track but it's a busy
45:46track yeah there's a lot going on so it's uh over a short period of time there's uh yeah there's
45:51oh and plus when you're getting hounded from behind as well but uh but no it's fun it's good
45:56the car's good it's just now going to start back in the pack in the heat so uh should be an exciting
46:00one but uh hi to kaz and the kiddies at home it's uh i wish you guys were here well there you go
46:04you've trophy here trophy girl ready for you congratulations james courtney be careful there
46:08we'll take the top bit hey uh mark we're just downloading with your engineer sorry to interrupt mate
46:13come and grab yourself a trophy well done p3 um i get a sense mate this is the start this weekend
46:19of your championship assault yeah it's important to get a result um you know we didn't start adelaide
46:23the way we wanted and we wanted to come here and show that we're a championship contender and uh
46:28car was good in the race we're p3 in the next one which is good so uh yeah we'll try and see how
46:33we go and try and get amongst these two but it's good seeing the other two guys fight maybe they can
46:37fight and i'll just blaze on through i said i thought it was someone's birthday because it was a massive
46:41cheer come out of here when the two boys collected each other hey well done on your behalf though
46:45when you got into the door of garth tander down there sensible move you got out of it yourself
46:49give yourself a little bit of a penalty but smart thinking mate well done yeah i'm trying to have a
46:52go and um but i don't want to crash someone off and um you know james we're having a good battle there
46:57and um it's hard under brakes on tv looks easy and that's the problem when you watch but uh the
47:02brakes are getting long and the car's moving around and you try and dive up the inside but um
47:07yeah got out of it had a crack got out of it and uh we finished it plus it was james he's not a bad
47:11guy as his moments but uh in the next one i don't have to pass him hopefully so i'll try and worry
47:17about the other two in this one all right well done pal thanks mate cheers incredible run continues
47:22here of mark winterbottom he just has a habit of finishing up the front at tasmania so ingle in
47:27fourth scotty mclaughlin there in fifth that's how they rounded out the top 10 with scott pie
47:32inside the 10 for the fords so 11th through to 20 chas most it had his dramas throughout that race
47:40nick perkatt fought back from the rear of the grid to 17th and robert dalgren in 20th for gary rogers
47:47motorsport and volvo polestar michael caruso jack perkins and davy reynolds and rick kelly and todd kelly
47:53both dnf rihanna russell ingle you could you could almost almost touch the trophy but just not quite
48:02there yeah no we uh we just couldn't quite quit with it um the rear started going off on the thing
48:07and uh she was a bit of a handful at the end but um look it's still a big step you know from where
48:12from where we've been and uh stepping it up towards the front there and racing with the good guys we're
48:17not far off you know so like i said we're ahead of schedule so i'm just going to keep sneaking up to it
48:21turn her up a bit and uh see what happens we know you love to race you're a racer deep down at heart
48:26what was it like being up being up there that top part of the uh the field well it's a lot different
48:32i can tell you instead of people running into you they run into you but they're just racing hard
48:36don't worry about that oh frosty was giving me a bit of a touch-up and letting you know he was there
48:40but that's good you know that's i enjoy that sort of racing i you know i don't mind it when someone
48:44dusts me up as long as you know we're racing hard um no just just really really enjoyable and uh
48:50oh just gonna sniff that champagne you know not quite damn it we've got another race this
48:55afternoon there's there's always hope in the second race well we got sunday too so don't
48:59worry about that no we're we're very happy though from uh from a little team down the back end of
49:04the grid here we're doing all right i think it's good to see you happy russell good luck for this one
49:08thanks guys we've still got a lot more to come this afternoon in the super sprint
49:12tire power tasmania 400 the aussie racing cars will take to the track another 100 kilometers worth of
49:18racing and after this break we'll get the thoughts of mark scape and neil crompson on an eventful race
49:23four of the championship back after this
49:31saturday alba racing is back featuring all the stars of the bmw sydney carnival
49:38today the rose hill guineas featuring seamus award and dissident is the highlight of three big group one
49:44races on april 5 rose hill gardens hosts the richest race for two-year-olds the two is new
49:51golden slipper worth three and a half million dollars then we head to royal ramwick and three
49:58weeks of incredible racing featuring the championships more than 18 million dollars in prize money
50:05including the world's richest sprint race the dali tj smith stakes the world's richest mile the star
50:12doncaster and the world's richest 2000 meter turf race the queen elizabeth states worth a staggering
50:19four million dollars money prestige and racing royalty sydney is set to shine and it's all live and free on
50:28seven and seven two
50:33from horsepower on the track to a different kind of horsepower a lot of angst
50:37as you can imagine here at the tire power tasmania 400 so wing cup gets the win we know that
50:43lounge taken out down at turn six we know that too who was in the right who was in the wrong
50:48well i can tell you that roland dane jamie wing cup and craig lounge have been the only three people
50:55inside that transporter roland comes out so that leaves
50:59lounge and wing cup in there by themselves to chat about it to talk it through and to obviously
51:06try and get to the bottom of it and solve it you guys have both been in this situation you know what
51:10it's like the fact is you've got teammates out there and you're going to race against them
51:14and sometimes you're going to hit them what do you think was being said in there well there's a
51:18couple of things you got to do with this matt motor racing is such that when you make a move like
51:22that you live the mistake now whether the move was on or not is not really the case you get down
51:26there you can't do anything about it you're in the car you've made the commitment and you're down
51:31the inside now for me i think wing cup was in the right i think he got down there far enough to take
51:36track position and to dominate that particular entry neil's not necessarily of the same view but
51:43i mean he's he's up there he's battling to stop i totally agree with that and he's got a lot of the
51:46inside curb it's right on the cusp of being a maneuver you get away with or not i don't have a cut
51:52and dried view other than you need to look at all the data and that's what will happen in this
51:56investigation i want to listen to the rear brakes when you look at it from the outside scapey saw
52:06the gap and called it when you might get down there but when you go on board you hold your breath a
52:10little bit on this one and go i'm not 100 sure what i find interesting because i'm not going to make a
52:15judgment call because i don't think we've really got enough information we need to see all the onboard
52:19cameras and look at the data uh what i find interesting though is that that jamie backed himself he
52:24went the move was on so he's actually flagged to craig that what craig needed to do was yield so that
52:30he could finish second i find that dynamic interesting because what he's actually saying
52:35there is the move was on no apology for that i don't like the outcome but there's no apology for
52:39having made the move for me that actually is a little signal of friction there and so there should
52:43be the two of them are playing for the highest stakes in australian motorsport but it's an interesting
52:47one an awkward one and it'll be on for a long time to come well what it does bud is it shows the
52:53genuine competition that's david couchy coming out of the truck he's obviously looking after jamie wing
52:57cup into team stuff like that is always difficult but one of the things your point neil is a really
53:02good one we see the big smile of lounge but we know how hardcore competitive he is but so is wing
53:09cup that was a very ruthless and powerful maneuver especially when your teammate is leading the
53:14championship i mean it's putting back to 10th well let's not forget that they have they both
53:18started on the front row of the grid so let's go all the way back to the very first lap and it was
53:22a good start by jamie wing cup uh craig sorry a poor start by wing cup lounge got away from him well
53:28and russell ingall was the biggest loser out of that he started from position number three
53:32we're on board with mark winterbottom behind him as he was just left sort of standing still
53:36they all got through quite cleanly aside from a little bit of push and shove because
53:41it's on so quickly at this circuit it just jumps up and swallows you doesn't it next thing you're
53:46down at turn four and you're all fighting at the hairpin other thing that happens at this race track
53:50is you get penalized for corner after corner after corner if you make one little blue that's normally
53:56at most race tracks it's kind of over and done with in a corner and you go damn it you know escape
53:59you just got me or whatever here what happens is when you give yourself an uppercut or someone gives one
54:04to you it goes on and on and on it's like the punishment never ends well it's like a freight train
54:09comes by isn't it it's not one car there's four or five this was a pretty healthy battle in the middle
54:13of the field van gisberg and up the inside of randalt he had body work damage and the
54:19nissans got caught up there with jack that was the right hand front damage for todd kelly
54:24and how's this moment wing cup that is almost in the fence guys that's that is a seriously big mistake
54:30this was a serious thing for young rick kelly off the road at 265 kilometers an hour and we think
54:37there's some break drama there so then we get a restart under these rules and lounge played it
54:41perfectly so a little bit of uh well a big question mark you got to say against um the restart for garth
54:47tanner but i actually think he tried to sort it sort it out by the time he got to the control line then
54:51this happens whack he fed at second gear right at the end neil didn't he it's a third gear corner he fed
54:58at second gear right at the end so that was designed he knew that it was going to be slower and courtney
55:04almost got by matt that was really that was a big opportunity for him and as you say it's just
55:08punch after punch after punch he comes back in and tries to make a move shane van gisberg and picked
55:13his way through the field beautifully it made up around 12 or 13 spots to finish just on the fringe
55:18of the top 10 and the ninth win for jamie wing cup at tasmania but a bittersweet one it's the 77th
55:24victory of his career and craig lownds for the life of me i'll never understand how he managed to stay
55:30on the black stuff at the final turn of the last lap that's at about 180 kilometers an hour matt that
55:35is right out sideways at the start of that contact it would have been on the lock stops that's full
55:40opposite lock at that speed that is unbelievable car control and a great save and this is the friction
55:46at the end i'm i'm with you neil when he come and said then at the end hey the move was on
55:51it's a pretty powerful statement okay so what does it do to the championship well 55 points is now the
55:56difference so not really much in the top two but courtney steps up into third and win cup goes from
56:01seventh up to sixth it's the talking point certainly is mate i've got roland dane team principal down
56:06here um roland when i walked in here at the end of that race it wasn't i wouldn't say it was an
56:12uncomfortable place to be but it was awkward jamie was clearly disturbed um you've just spent some
56:16time with the boys in the truck let's just go over it first the incident let me ask about the
56:20internet what you read on the internet itself look it was a bit of a 50 50 jamie was well in there and
56:27craig closed the door quite late in the day so so hard you know better better than i do that corner's
56:34a hard corner anyway to read and it's sort of the apex goes away from you a bit and it's and then
56:39suddenly you're in it and um so i can i can sort of sympathize with both of them uh and um if it had
56:48been you know i don't know one car against another team car etc then um i think it was uh yeah it was a
56:56racing incident i'm just annoyed that it's between our two cars i make no bones about it they're not
57:00meant to do that and uh they won't be doing it again so we have talked about that in the past mate
57:05because you've always said on many occasions you know go race hard don't take take each other out
57:10it's just happened you've been in the truck with them what do you say to them
57:15that you're prepared to share with us i don't say very much because i'm not the team principal
57:19anymore dutto is in terms of uh running the running the race meetings etc but um maybe he's a bit too
57:27soft on them maybe uh maybe i'm a bit of a harder old bastard than uh than he is but they all have to
57:34find their feet without me you know without me being there all the time and so uh they know what
57:39i think i don't need to speak to them they know what i i think about it and um i'm sure that they'll
57:45act accordingly but i think it was a yeah it's a 50 50 racing incident that you shouldn't have
57:49between two teammates but from a racing point of view you know that's how that happens so
57:55communication i mean prior to that i mean does there need to be an improvement in communication
58:00engineers drivers between each other oh yeah i mean you know what drivers are like they're like
58:05they're like children really if you if they give them an inch they'll take a mile and they probably
58:09feel that maybe maybe without me there they uh they feel they can take a couple of inches instead of
58:15instead of one so and maybe they have i don't know but um i i'm sure that uh sure that dutto will
58:21sort them out i have a strong sense that they know you're here today mate so thanks for the heads
58:25up no problem i reckon you're exactly right larko so roland dane's gone and put his footprint on that
58:3050 50 call sure tick racing incident tick teammates hitting each other no doesn't happen again i think
58:35they're well and truly aware of it and i think the voters are saying that 86 percent reckon that that
58:40wasn't within the rules for jamie winkup the good thing is they get to do it all again another 100 k's
58:44a bit later on this afternoon but coming up after this the aussie racing cars hit the track here at tassie
58:54he doesn't look a thing like jesus
59:00but more than you'll ever know
