00:00:00You're stuck with me, you've drawn the short straw, you've got JC, car 22, but we're here in Simmers Plains this weekend, crazy little circuit, doesn't look that exciting on paper, but trust me, it's one hell of a circuit, so let's see how we do it.
00:00:18Radio up around, the lead up onto the main straight is not even straight, you're hanging, soaring at the wheel, this little section up over the hill here, it's like a rollercoaster, using a lot of curve here, trying to get the rear of the car settled, it's like wrestling a bear in here through there, up against the wall, try and run along the wall here, to just get as much straight line speed out of the thing as you can,
00:00:46jump onto the brakes, massive stop here, whoa, lock the rear's a little, slowest corner off the track, back to first, hard on the power, all the circuit out of there, up here, put a bit of a time to relax, maybe do a bar adjustment, some boys check their hair, bit of make-up on, up into the last corner, it's a big bad stop, up into here, back to third, the car's dancing around, up into the apex, hard onto the gas out of here,
00:01:16short shift to four, and just hang onto the thing, it's a wild little luck, and let's see how we go in the car 22 over the weekend guys, cheers.
00:01:25Yeah, well done James Courtney, taking us for a hot lap, of course he finished on the podium in race four, but the big news around here, Scaifey, is that Craig Lounce has been sent to the back of the grid for the start of race five, what happened was they put some tape over a small little aperture in the driver's side window, it's a safety hole in the window, so anybody can get to it quickly and rip the thing out, it's a polycarbonate window.
00:01:50So, he's been penalised for that, do you think it's a fair penalty, let us know, v8supercars.com.au slash boat or 7sport at 85%, leaning in Lowndes' favour saying that's not a fair penalty, regardless, he will start from the back of the grid for the next 100km race, but we just went for a wild quick ride around here, because it's all over in less than a minute, and this circle, this is what we want to break down, this place, I mean, that's what it looks like when you draw it on a bit of paper, you go round, you come back, and it looks really simple, doesn't it?
00:02:19But it isn't, it is complex and it's busy.
00:02:22Well, James Courtney just said it's a crazy little lap, and that's exactly what it is, just over 50 seconds, as you said, 2.4km, let's break it down, because we'll have a look at turn one and turn two first, because check the undulation out, it's that little rise, James called it a little roller coaster, so you go in and over the hill, you've got to stop the car, it's a very fast approach, Craig Lowndes having a rotate there at the front of the field, and this is what happens if it goes wrong.
00:02:46That was Scott Pye last year, very fast, 210km an hour, got to slow it back to about 90km, and it's one of the best driver sections of the year, Matt, you've got to really do a nice job with the brake modulation to get it turn for turn two.
00:03:00So it's a tough start to this lap, from the very get-go, it's tough.
00:03:03James Courtney just mentioned, through turn three, it's like wrestling a bear, I thought that was a great description.
00:03:09Then you arrive at turn four, down to 50km an hour, do you go high side, do you go low side?
00:03:13We know it is low, low speed.
00:03:16Yes, and it's a very fast approach, so this is the controversy a couple of years ago now with Will Davison and Craig Lowndes, it almost put him out, you can see the end of the grass on the outside, and then it's plucked the left-hand front wheel off.
00:03:29The reason that's the case is it's a very fast approach, 245km, this is Dave Reynolds with wall and wall, that was David Wall on the left and the wall on the right,
00:03:39and he actually said at the time there were some style points in that that did a huge amount of damage to his car.
00:03:45And this was also a pretty graphic little version of events with Garth Tander and Jason Bright, and they've bumped and they keep bumping,
00:03:54and there's a dodge-em car effect onto the straight.
00:03:57Have a look at this.
00:03:58Run him out of road, run him out of road, run him out of road, over to the side, they've made my contact.
00:04:03And it's a very important one because it gives you the next spot, we saw it just then with Craig Lowndes and Jamie Winkup, you've got to get yourself onto that straight and through the kink to be in position to pass at turn 6, and this is the fast kink.
00:04:15We call it a straight, it's 265km an hour around the right-hander, and there's no room there.
00:04:21We've got great vision over the years of really good passing manoeuvres.
00:04:24This is on board, look at the bump there with Jamie Winkup and Mark Winnabon, bang!
00:04:29And have a look, that little contact there, as I said, it's 265km an hour.
00:04:34This was another great one last year with McLaughlin and Winterbottom, and the dive down the inside, that was a really good manoeuvre from Scott.
00:04:43But it's such a fast approach, Matt, it's 270km, and you've got to get the car stopped, you've got to get it turned nicely, and if you don't do it properly, that's what happens.
00:04:52That's on board with Jamie Winkup last year.
00:04:54He trickled off, but it's so easy to do, that was obviously where they made the contact in the race we just saw.
00:05:01And this was Van Gisbergen last year also, locked the wheel straight off the road.
00:05:06Very similar to what happened to Rick Kelly in race four today.
00:05:08In fact, Rick said you'd be hard-pressed to find a better ride at Dreamworld.
00:05:13Have a look at this one.
00:05:14This is Will Davison.
00:05:16Now, we saw Winkup do it in the race just then.
00:05:19It was right out in the weeds.
00:05:21It's, you're doing about 180km, the car's sideways, because you're already sliding, you get to the grass, you get further into the grass, you either go in that wall or that wall.
00:05:30You're almost in the corporates up the top, by the way.
00:05:32Absolutely.
00:05:32It's a really wild way to finish the lap.
00:05:35So it's a very intense, very short, but also a real, I mean, it's a very demanding little track.
00:05:40Great on high-end speed, it's good on tyres, good on grip, but it's tough on the brakes and it's full of bumps.
00:05:45It's got the lot, this one.
00:05:47Larko, let's run through a bit more about Simmons Plains.
00:05:49Yeah, good analysis, boys.
00:05:52And so let's drill down just a little bit deeper on the whiteboard.
00:05:55So you heard Scafie say intensity.
00:05:57Let's have a look at this circuit.
00:05:58You can see it there mapped out.
00:05:59Now, first of all, you'll note it's nearly an oval.
00:06:01It's literally one direction, which is quite unusual on our circuit.
00:06:04So heavily loaded on the right-hand side of the car.
00:06:07So you can actually run an asymmetrical setup if you choose, which is quite weird.
00:06:11Now, the other thing is intensity.
00:06:13I've marked here in the green and the red you can see, so all the green areas where the car is either grip-limited by turning or accelerating up through the gears, and the red is the braking.
00:06:22So when you have an overview of the circuit, and I can tell you all the way down the straight you're actually turning.
00:06:27Here you're turning at the end of a lap.
00:06:29So really, it's only this little section here when you're not doing anything.
00:06:32So turn one and two.
00:06:33You heard Scafie talk about the little rise here.
00:06:35It's a real driver's skill thing as you go over the rise to brake the car as you're turning it.
00:06:41So it's all weighted to the left.
00:06:42The right front wants to lock up.
00:06:44You've got to get him back down on the ground hard to brake to turn left.
00:06:47Very hard to do on a driver's skill thing.
00:06:49I like those ones.
00:06:50Down into the hairpin.
00:06:51This is the most interesting corner almost on our circuit that we do.
00:06:54A couple of little tricks.
00:06:56Here is the normal racing line.
00:06:58We've shown you that before.
00:06:59Late apex.
00:07:00A really groovy little trick down there for an overtaking manoeuvre is if your brake marker is here,
00:07:06what you can do if you can sneak up the inside of someone,
00:07:09you can actually go a little bit past your ideal braking marker and do this.
00:07:14You can actually get in there and push this guy up right up high without breaking the rules,
00:07:20go right off the racing line and hustle around there.
00:07:23That's a great move.
00:07:24But what happens then, the guy that you've pushed out will often sneak down the inside.
00:07:29Now, if he just gets to there, here, on the exit of the corner, that means all the way down here,
00:07:34and we see it all the time, if he's on the inside, he's in a really good overtaking position for six.
00:07:40Now, six, you can see your trail brake into the corner.
00:07:43That means you leave your foot on the brake as you turn into the corner.
00:07:45Very easy to lock up the wheel, and there's another really driver skill or a driver skill mechanism that needs to be applied here,
00:07:52which is the release of the brake.
00:07:54You don't want to just smash the brakes and jump off them.
00:07:56You want to get in there, trail brake, and ease off the brake to carry momentum.
00:08:00Almost use the brakes to speed your car up.
00:08:02Because it's an open radius corner, another really good for overtaking.
00:08:05And what we see happen there is if I grab a third car here, when we go down into here,
00:08:10if you're going to put yourself on the outside, I talked about Chaz Mostert earlier going around the outside,
00:08:15what you've got to watch out for is one, two, three cars lining up there behind.
00:08:20And as they come around here, then you're on the outside of here on seven,
00:08:24and you're in real trouble when you get down into one.
00:08:26So, for me, you've got to be really clever before you put yourself out there.
00:08:29Have a look what's happening behind you to make sure you might need to tuck in and stay where you are.
00:08:34As you can see, just in that little bit of roadway, 2.4 kilometres, there is a hell of a lot going on.
00:08:39Yeah, well, it's called the Penrite proper racing line.
00:08:42It's probably the hardest place to find a proper racing line.
00:08:442.4 kilometres, as you say, Larko, but every inch counts.

00:10:36you know, we were running strong, we had one
00:10:38two sort of almost in the bag
00:10:40you know, it was lucky that he managed to still get on

00:10:44motor racing, you know, you go with the highs and lows
00:10:46and when you've got two competitive drivers
00:10:48within a team
00:10:50eventually something's going to happen and of course
00:10:52it did.

00:45:50and he's been unloaded just listen
00:45:58it's a bit strange because there was a bit of a gap there at one point it all looked like it was
00:46:01going to work out swimmingly and then it was a big whack it lifted the back of the nissan right up
00:46:06so it'll take a moment or two to get this car clear now the field compresses now the drama starts
00:46:14because well there's only a handful of laps to go and by the time they get car 15 out it's going
00:46:19to be a mad dash to the finish wind cup was sailing along nicely had good speed over winter bottom
00:46:26he had everybody covered fabian coulthard in at third scott mclaughlin knew that lounge was coming but
00:46:33now he'll have him right in his rear view mirror and look a lot of times matt we really you know
00:46:39we've given chas most some real accolades for some great drives especially his first win last year
00:46:45yeah and and he shows great pace but that was a very immature move that one at that stage of the
00:46:51race you've got to make sure that if you're going to fire down the inside that you can actually make
00:46:56that maneuver stick it never looked like stopping and hit the back of the nissan altima hard enough
00:47:01for the rear wheels to come off the ground so one of the volvos is coming in robert dahlgren is down in
00:47:08position 19 we'll just try and grab a word here with timmy before we do if you just point the camera
00:47:14over there dave there's there's eddie big eddie that's uh chas's dad over here just looked at me
00:47:19he's uh probably a little bit disappointed as well hey uh tim we we do talk a lot about how fast chas
00:47:25is he's a great talent of the future over the course of today i thought he might probably didn't position
00:47:30his car well in the first race a couple of times and we've seen a little bit of an error there
00:47:33it's a bit of a management issue now isn't it he just needs that little bit of something to make
00:47:38him capitalize on his raw speed yeah we just got to coach him you know that that's our job we've
00:47:42got to teach him you know he is new to the category you know you can't expect somebody to
00:47:46to have 10 years of experience um yeah i mean he was obviously getting a little bit frustrated he was a
00:47:51lot faster than rick and rick was blocking him every lap down into turn six and he just you know i think
00:47:57he's he's uh his impatience got the better of him i'd say yeah well he's still very young mate so it's
00:48:02ahead so uh keep your head down and keep at him he's got a big future yeah i mean the great thing
00:48:05is that he's fast we can teach him the other part of the job yeah you're dead right the other bit
00:48:10it's a bit hard isn't it all right thanks pal it's always easy to play wonetti than giddy up in this
00:48:15business but uh he's kind of a 34 robert dalbrin in a little bit of tire damage there so uh and he
00:48:23will get a penalty for that by the way chas molston it's pretty clear cut don't forget the highlights
00:48:28tonight at midnight right around the nation on seven to seven mate of both of the races today
00:48:33so a couple of things here take a look car 17 is out of sync but in the line david wall so too is
00:48:39russell ingall just at the top of your screen he's hard to miss damage to car 23 but remember when they
00:48:45get to the acceleration zone they're not allowed to overtake before the control line which was discussed
00:48:52that length in the driver's briefing and there's certainly been a couple of instances today where
00:48:56that's run amok it's hard to manage though when you're in the saddle so normally those guys would
00:49:01step aside and let the other guys go racing but that's right you can't do it now so that's pretty
00:49:06critical in the fact that we've only got we'll only end up having about four or five laps to the to the
00:49:11end and as larko pointed out earlier on in the day every inch of this 2.4 kilometer circuit counts
00:49:18so so they're all guiding now they're talking to mark winterbottom as we speak and they're saying don't
00:49:23pass him before the control line so you're going to limit the risk here so jamie picks that speed
00:49:32between 60 and 80 when he takes control of the speed field he then flattens off that number there's
00:49:39all of the various engineers that's dave patterson there he'll be talking to jack perkins his engineer
00:49:44they've got to stay within one car length that's a requirement in the rule so they tighten up the
00:49:49bunch fabian's right under the back of russell into the zone straight he'll go straight away off he
00:49:57goes so they've got to wait they've got to wait until they get the control line now they can start
00:50:02to fan out and look for positions so those cars that are out of sync help jamie winkup and help mark
00:50:10winterbottom they don't help cool tar mclaughlin
00:50:21car six drive through for that incident that we saw before so most it will come through the lane
00:50:25no surprise down the inside that's messy for van gespergen he climbed over was it reynolds or courtney
00:50:31whatever it was he was all four in the air at that stage and at that restart jason bryant has got craig
00:50:38lounge so lounges has dropped the spot back to sixth so wing cut 1.2 seconds and winner bottom
00:50:46then cool thought oh that was close craig just got him back got him back so that was close between
00:50:51david wall and scott mclaughlin but he gets through how's the margin that jamie's enjoyed after the first
00:50:57racing lap the restart 1.3 seconds the margin when they crossed the control line there that was messy
00:51:04back on the previous laps of the hairpin scoping yeah cars crunching hard into each other
00:51:13so russell engel did the right thing he stepped aside david wall's going to do the same this is the
00:51:18penalty chas mostard driving infringement and this was the stuff that neil's referring to look at that
00:51:26that's van gespergen right up in the air into the side of dave reynolds
00:51:33get some vision here bang they were all concertina straight into the side of jack
00:51:39perkins he's got no road on the outside that was on board i think with courtney we'll just have a look
00:51:45yeah yeah so courtney got into the back here of the van gespergen have a look at this this is
00:51:51a great performance wing cup since the restart very very good laps one and a half seconds
00:51:57it'll be a post-race investigation for jason bright and tim slade as a result of that restart
00:52:09now don't discount fabian caulthard having a run at mark winterbottom because we saw this
00:52:15last year young scott mclaughlin's done a good job at the restart we thought that lounge would get
00:52:20straight to him in fact he lost the spot to bright here to find his way back by jason and now lounge
00:52:27is blooming large in the mirror of young scott mclaughlin who's done an extraordinary job
00:52:32this year in the first year back for volvo say by the way that lounge went past bright back at turn
00:52:38six on that previous lap he's actually yielded the spot to him because i'll bet that they got on the
00:52:42radio and went mate you're going to have to regress that because i think what's happened there is bright
00:52:47somehow snip clowns before the control line on the restart right
00:52:53look at the margin he's bolded jamie winkup it's 1.6 seconds
00:52:58and it's a handy margin winterbottom to cool tar but this next little battle is unresolved
00:53:04that concrete free which has got a higher grip level than what the tar has got so the guys use
00:53:15every little bit on the exit of there this is lounge now so remember the fight that scott mclaughlin had
00:53:22with jamie winkup at adelaide now he's got craig lounge on him they're going to come side by side at the
00:53:27exit of six do they rub it seven yes they do that is high speed sliding around the corner
00:53:34and the volvo sticks it out great drive holds his ground the young kiwi great driving by both those
00:53:40guys and the cars are totally grip limited on the slide in the lowest speed is 165k they're doing about
00:53:48180 or 190k right out sideways right alongside each other great driving oh craig he nearly
00:53:57outbraked himself then and drilled straight into the back of mclaughlin that was spectacular at six
00:54:03wasn't it both cars sliding through the turn and great maturity for mclaughlin to just keep his focus
00:54:09there and not make a mistake here's the race leader with one to go it's got mclaughlin drawing on all
00:54:15that experience that he had in between events driving on the ice in sweden but jamie winkup does it
00:54:22again two out of two winna bottom is second fabian third but uh you're rocking out there scotty mclaughlin
00:54:31fourth and what a drive from craig lounge unbelievable talent incredible skill from 25th to fifth amazing
00:54:42red bull racing
00:54:45red bull racing australia so two pole positions and two wins to start the weekend
00:54:53the jamie winkup
00:54:58and a very good drive by young scott there matt i mean that that last lap with the pressure of a lounge
00:55:04coming at you and being able to get away with at the highest speed corner two abreast totally grip
00:55:12limited and not run into each other and not effectively have an accident with only a lap to go
00:55:19was a very mature drive we've seen some really good performances so far from him fabian called also a
00:55:24very good performance mark winterbottom had the pace of winkup in the early stages right through to the
00:55:29middle of the race winkup then put on about a 10 lap spurt which were like qualifying laps and just
00:55:36before the safety curry effectively had a one second lead he ended up winning this with a very smart
00:55:44restart and a very good batch of laps right at the end and that was a superb performance from jamie winkup
00:55:50to rebound from the drama of the previous race go back to that battle that he had with frosty where
00:55:56he just stepped it up he stepped it up a notch started posting first uh fastest first sector times
00:56:03just enough to say i know you can come with me but i'm just going to kick ahead here and that's
00:56:08what he does he's remarkable like that 78 career wins now and that's 10 victories at simmons plains
00:56:13for jamie winkup
00:56:21he's a master of his trade that was a wild race there was a lot of wild stuff that had just gone
00:56:26on there no kidding sherlock and we we knew it was going to end like that too i know
00:56:31a totally different tempo than a previous race
00:56:33so that's three race wins for 2014 for the combination of couchy and winkup
00:56:43red bull racing australia have that knack too of they got themselves into trouble they got a slap on
00:56:48the wrist from the boss and they quickly put it behind them good drive from mark winterbottom he's so
00:56:56consistent here he's got good car speed and fabian coulthard again on the podium at tasmania jamie
00:57:05winkup it has been a roller coaster day for you but 10 wins at this racetrack now two wins from today
00:57:12congratulations oh thank you thank you the car was uh excellent all day we we qualified well and um
00:57:18got a much better start in that last race and frosty pushes hard he's obviously got a very good car like
00:57:23uh it's a classic good old battle you know we've been doing it since 2008 so i really enjoyed that
00:57:27but um and i saw louncy come flying through as well where he put in a super effort so um yeah it's been
00:57:33a good day enjoy the champagne on the podium and mark winterbottom you've continued your amazing streak
00:57:37at this circuit 20 out of the 20 out of the last 22 races in the top five congratulations second on
00:57:43the podium yeah i'm wrapped with that um i may have to give jamie a uh an invoice might seem an invoice
00:57:48for a tow docker because i just towed in that whole race but those boys are quick but
00:57:52you just got to keep pushing and try and consolidate results when you can and i'm pretty
00:57:56pretty proud we had a few issues before we went at that race and all four teams or four cars come
00:58:01and help me get out of that into that race so it's a podium for everyone and we're fighting we're you
00:58:07know we're close and the boys are here to cheer you on on the podium congratulations fabian coulthard
