01:47Welcome to Winton Motor Raceway for round eight of the Shell Championship Series.
01:51It's a normal sprint round with three 20-minute races.
01:54Now, organisers had hoped to reintroduce a reverse grid format like we saw in Canberra at this
01:59round, but they've had some dramas getting all the drivers to sign off on that.
02:03What I can tell you is that we will have a reverse grid race at the next round of the
02:07championship at Orrin Park in Sydney.
02:08Just what shape that takes is yet to be decided.
02:11We could reverse the top six, maybe the top 12 or the entire field, and still to be nutted
02:15out.
02:15After seven rounds of the series, the point score looks like this.
02:19Markscape on top for the commanding one, 58-point lead in the championship.
02:23Glenn Seaton is set to strike here, though.
02:25FTR have done an incredible amount of testing at Winton.
02:28Garth Tander just 30 points ahead of defending champion Craig Lawrence.
02:31Stephen Johnson and Mark Larkham also inside the top ten.
02:34John Bauer, the 95 champion, is absolutely crying out for coins.
02:38So, too, Larry Perkins.
02:39Craig Baird, who won the second race at the opening round of the championship at Phillip
02:43Island, has been having a bit of a disappointing season since then.
02:46Well, Barry Sheaton, welcome to you to Winton.
02:48And I guess it's been some changes since we were last here.
02:50Yeah, what they've done, they've moved the start.
02:52The start used to be right where we're standing here, into a tight right-hander.
02:56Well, they've moved it to the straight by the garages.
02:58And I think the first S-Bend is going to be really interesting, because it's a tight left and
03:02a tight right.
03:03Also, yesterday, they've had some really bad drainage problems.
03:07It caught out Glenn Seaton and Mark Scaife running a big puddle on a left-hand bend and
03:11brought them both off.
03:12I was talking to Larry Perkins about it this morning.
03:14He said, well, it's nothing new.
03:15It's been like it for the last 20 years.
03:18If you've ever doubted the athleticism or the fitness of a V8 supercar driver, or maybe

04:00Well I can tell you where it put him, that put him right on pole position, that was a
04:11stunning lap at 1.22.8, that is the first board pole of the year and a new qualifying
04:16lap record for Red Dakota Raceway, Garth Tander, second fastest, he jumped up late in that
04:20session, Greg Murphy wasn't even in the top 50% of qualifying and late in the second session
04:25he jumped up to third fastest, Neil Crompton, that's a great effort from him, fourth fastest,
04:29Scaife and Lowndes, the Red Barons who we saw on the front row at the previous round in
04:32Queensland, fifth and sixth, and it's Stephen Richards, Todd Kelly, Jason Barguana and Bauer
04:37just sneaking inside the top ten. Let's go down trackside now to Mark Osler who's with a pretty
04:41happy pole sitter. Well it's been a long time coming but Ford has finally taken its first
04:46pole position in 2000 for the Shell Championship Series and the man who's done the damage is
04:50Glenn Seaton, congratulations Glenn, boy last pole position for you I think was Hidden Valley
04:541999 so it's been a long time between drinks. It has been a long time, it's the
04:58car's been very consistent throughout the race meetings but just hasn't had that qualifying
05:02package and really we've lacked qualifying package since Hidden Valley last year. This
05:06weekend should be a great weekend for us, it is our home test track and we've done a bit
05:10of testing here and the car seems to respond to everything we've done so this weekend hopefully
05:14it will be ours. Three races today, the car's obviously quick and qualifying, how's it going
05:18to perform in the races? I think it should perform very well, like I say the testing we've done,
05:23we've done race endurance runs and the thing's very consistent on tyres. Isn't it great not
05:29to see a red car on the front row this weekend but it's going to be a hard day, I think there's
05:34no doubt about that because it is very close in the supercar category and hopefully today
05:39we can come away with a podium finish and hopefully the number one.
05:42Are you surprised that HRT went further up in qualifying?
05:46I suppose I am because this is their test track and I think naturally it's great to have that
05:51one on them and this weekend we've got it so far.

05:55Yeah, he looked a little subdued there but don't kid yourself, he was absolutely wrapped
05:59with that pole time. Now as I mentioned that is a new qualifying lap record, he eclipses
06:03the time set there by Jason Barguana last year in qualifying. Incidentally the Russell Ingle
06:07lap record has stood since 1997. Couple of changes to the track, as I mentioned once before with
06:12Barry there's a new start line this season but the man who can tell you the finer points
06:15of Winton Motor Raceway, your chauffeur for today's flying lap, is Neil Crompton.
06:19Welcome to Winton Raceway. This is quite an unusual little track. It's got a pretty slow
06:28average speed at around about 130 kilometres an hour but it has 12 turns, it's quite slippery and
06:35it's actually very difficult to set up for. This is the old pit straight where there used to be
06:39terrible calamities here at what was the old turn one, now turn four. Then it's a gentle run down the
06:45hill we're in third gear, this is quite a fun corner, you can use a little bit of the ripple
06:49strip on the exit up to the fast sweeper in the middle of the place. Turn five, this one's good
06:55for about 140, 145 on Ks, just kiss the ripple strip on both sides. When the front wheels have
07:02landed you can get stuck into the brake pedal back to second gear for turn six. Now the series of
07:09switchbacks, second gear, feels like you're going through your local indoor car centre, turning on
07:15to the old back straight. This is turn nine, second gear, you've got to be very careful feeding the power
07:21on here, up to fourth gear, hard on the pigs, back to second gear. This is the slowest corner, about 65
07:29kilometres an hour. A bit of rain around here lately, so you've got to be very careful at the edges of the
07:34road, the ripple strips can be slippery, temporarily up to fifth, 200 Ks, hard on the pigs again, back to
07:40second gear for the second last corner. A little dab of the brake, turn her on to the new pit straight
07:46where we'll be starting the races from today, and this is our quickest straight at about 220 kilometres
07:52an hour in fifth gear. This is Winton Motor Raceway and these are the gods of thunder. Stick around,
