00:00Hello and welcome to today's segment of Kompas Business.
00:03We are diving into powerful story of how one company is going beyond its co-business
00:09to create real impact on public health and financial retailers in Indonesia.
00:15With us today, Mr. Kah Jingli, Chief Client Officer of Sun Life Indonesia.
00:20Here to talk about how Sun Life is reshaping not just insurance,
00:24but how Indonesians think about their financial well-being and health.
00:28Welcome to Kompas TV. Kah Jingli, thank you for coming.
00:33Thank you. Very happy to be here.
00:35Very happy to have you.
00:36So Sun Life recently launched a survey.
00:39It's about on type 2 diabetes and its hidden cause in Asia.
00:44So what were some of the most shocking findings that you discovered about diabetes in Indonesia especially?
00:51Right. Before I dive into the findings,
00:54we would like to recognize that diabetes is a very severe disease
00:59that affects many families in Indonesia and in fact all across Asia as well.
01:05Exactly.
01:05So for this survey, we actually surveyed 3,600 people
01:10across various countries, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines and Hong Kong actually.
01:18So it's quite a comprehensive survey.
01:21Some of the shocking findings are, first of all, 80% of the people who actually has diabetes
01:29struggle to get proper and consistent medical care
01:33because it's such a heavy financial and mental burden on their daily lives
01:39or just to get the medicine and the help that they need.
01:43So that can be pretty expensive.
01:45Yeah.
01:46And even for people who don't have diabetes,
01:50and when about three-quarters reported that if they were to get diabetes,
01:55they wouldn't have the financial ability to kind of manage it.
02:00So it's actually quite a difficult situation.
02:03Last but not least, diabetes is actually something that is preventable.
02:08I'm referring to type 2 diabetes, of course.
02:11It's something that is preventable, maybe not easily preventable
02:14depending on genetic makeup, lifestyle, so on and so forth.
02:18And also habits, right?
02:20Yeah, definitely.
02:21But there are many things we can do about it.
02:25And one of the things that we found in the survey is that
02:27about a third of the people have never actually taken a blood sugar test.
02:33They've never taken a blood test for their diabetic situation.
02:36So regular testing, you know, looking after your health,
02:39looking after your daily habits will go a really long way to prevent this disease.
02:44Okay.
02:45So financial security is deeply tied to education as well.
02:49So Indonesia Financial Literacy's index is still relatively low.
02:55So how is Sun Life addressing this gap,
02:58and especially among for younger generations?
03:01As of a few years ago, 2022,
03:05the financial literacy rate in Indonesia is not very high.
03:09It's actually below 50%.
03:10So what this means is that the majority of the population
03:13don't really have a sense of the financial,
03:18of the needs of savings, for example,
03:20of the needs for planning for their children's education
03:23or their own retirement, for example.
03:26So, well, of course,
03:28we understand that sometimes income may not be very high
03:32and people struggle day to day.
03:34But it is actually very important,
03:36regardless of your income level,
03:38to at least have some understanding
03:39and some planning of what you should do in advance
03:43to save up for OH or for contingency.
03:46So there are many ways and instruments
03:48that can help our clients do that.
03:51But it's quite important that people open up their minds to that as well.
03:56On Sun Life's side,
03:57we do participate,
03:59we do try to encourage
04:01or elevate the financial literacy in Indonesia.
04:04We work with our bank partners.
04:06We have two major bank partners in Indonesia,
04:08CIMB Niaga and Bank Mama Life Indonesia.
04:12How many just two banks?
04:14How many banks?
04:14Oh, two major bank partners in Indonesia,
04:18CIMB Niaga and Bank Mama Indonesia.
04:20From time to time,
04:21we participate in events with them
04:23to educate our clients,
04:26the bank clients and the insurance company clients
04:28on things like legacy planning,
04:30savings, so on and so forth.
04:33And the response from the market is positive?
04:36Yes, indeed.
04:37Because not take legacy planning, for example,
04:41not many people actually think of legacy planning.
04:44and the tax implications, so on and so forth.
04:46We live our life,
04:47we try to provide for our families,
04:49we work hard.
04:50But sometimes,
04:50this is not something that's top of mind.
04:53And when you have a right forum
04:55to bring this information to our clients,
04:57they appreciate it.
04:58Okay.
04:58So, Ka Jing,
04:59Can you share about how Sun Life is innovating?
05:03It's a distribution strategy to reach more Indonesians,
05:07and including to those who prefer Sharia compliance relations.
05:12Right.
05:13There are two parts to this question,
05:15the innovation part and the Sharia part of it.
05:20For the strategy and the innovation part,
05:24we are really quite simple.
05:25We adopt a multi-channel distribution strategy.
05:31What this means is that we meet the client where they want to.
05:34For example,
05:35if the client wants to buy from a bank,
05:37we have fantastic bank partnerships across the country.
05:41If the client prefer to work with an agent,
05:45we do have an agency as well.
05:47If the client prefer to buy Sharia products,
05:53we do have Sharia agency,
05:55work with Sharia bank to deliver Sharia products
05:57to those clients who want them.
06:00In fact,
06:01last year,
06:02late last year,
06:02we already announced our intention
06:04to split our Sharia business into an independent company.
06:09This is our commitment
06:10This really shows our commitment
06:13to the Sharia business in Indonesia
06:16and to continue to support the growth of Sharia insurance.
06:20So, a lot of choices, yeah?
06:22Plenty of choices.
06:23A lot of choices.
06:24So, Ka Jing,
06:25beyond insurance,
06:27Sun Life is heavily involved in community,
06:31especially for young generation
06:33and health education as well,
06:36especially among youth.
06:37Could you share to us
06:38some of the highlights from these initiatives?
06:41This is an area that
06:43we are really passionate about.
06:45Sun Life is really passionate about
06:46and I'm super passionate about as well.
06:48And that's the really,
06:49that's part of the reason
06:50why I'm here today
06:51to talk about this.
06:52So,
06:53Sun Life,
06:54globally,
06:55we,
06:55since,
06:56I think,
06:572012 or something,
06:58we have committed
06:59more than 50 million Canadian dollars
07:00to spread awareness
07:01about diabetes prevention.
07:05So,
07:05that's also part of the reason
07:07why I speak a lot about diabetes,
07:09better habits,
07:10simple things like
07:11a blood test
07:12is going to go a long way
07:14to help people.
07:15But beyond diabetes,
07:16we also do a lot of community outreach
07:19in Indonesia.
07:20For example,
07:21we have a program
07:22from 2022 to 2024
07:24called Build Our Kids Success.
07:26So,
07:27what we do is that
07:28we go out to schools
07:29across Jakarta
07:30and all across Indonesia
07:31to educate children
07:33on their diet,
07:34how to eat more healthily
07:35and so they'll grow up well
07:38and build good habits.
07:40Another thing that,
07:41oh,
07:41it has reached out to,
07:43I think,
07:43more above 40,000 children already.
07:46So,
07:46another thing,
07:47another program that we have
07:50would be
07:51Hoops and Health.
07:52Last year,
07:53we actually refurbished a court
07:55in Depok area.
07:57It's a community court.
07:58Anybody can go.
07:59We,
08:00even our staff got involved.
08:02Sun Life employees got involved
08:04to clean it up,
08:05to do the painting.
08:06We reset up the court.
08:07It's a very nice space
08:08for people to play basketball,
08:10for people to be healthy,
08:13get some exercise,
08:15have some chit-chat
08:16with their family and friends.
08:17So,
08:18it's a very nice community space.
08:20And this is a program
08:21that we will continue.
08:22In fact,
08:23this year,
08:24we will have our program
08:26in Gandhara City
08:27from the 31st of May
08:28to the 1st of June.
08:30And we will really welcome
08:31everyone to visit us as well.
08:33Next month, yeah?
08:34Yeah, that's right.
08:34So, the program is going to be
08:35for young generation.
08:37Correct.
08:38And helping people
08:39live healthier lives
08:40through sports.
08:41That's interesting.
08:42Thank you very much
08:43for the incredible insight
08:44to us this morning.
08:45And thank you for your program
08:47as well
08:47from Sun Life Indonesia.
08:49So,
08:50from empowering families
08:52through financial literacy
08:53to fighting diabetes
08:54through community-driven programs.
08:57It's clear
08:58that Sun Life Indonesia
08:59is committed
09:00to making a long-term difference.
09:03This is more than insurance.
09:04This is about
09:05building a healthier,
09:07financially,
09:08stronger generation
09:09for Indonesia.
09:11Thank you, Ka Jing.
09:12And thank you for the program as well.
09:14Thank you very much.
09:15So happy to be here.
09:16Thank you for coming.
09:17And Saudara Usai Jeddah,
09:19Kompas Bisnis
09:20masih akan kembali
