00:00this championship never ceases to amaze me already in 2014 we've seen it all
00:16rollovers rivalries breakthrough wins and the rise of the Kiwis now this
00:26weekend you're on our soil this is our track welcome to Pukekohe Park Raceway
00:33this is the fastest racetrack in New Zealand here total commitment is barely
00:39enough this place throws everything at you this is the place where Aussies
00:44should fear to come a track that truly rewards the brave
00:49to win in Australia that's one thing to win across the ditch that's another I love
01:01racing here there is nothing like standing on the top step here Pukki is our cauldron this
01:12is our track and yet again he brings Pukekohe to its feet but it's time for another New Zealand
01:18motorsport hero to stand up it's time for someone else to dominate which one of these Kiwis wants it
01:25more will it be Fabian Coulthard Shane Van Gisbergen or will it be Scotty McLaughlin the Kiwis will erupt
01:33look out there's a new kid in town in the V8 supercars his name is Scott McLaughlin there's
01:39absolutely no doubt the game has changed which one of these Kiwis wants to take my mantle
01:45as the king of Pukekohe
01:46yes we're in New Zealand south of Auckland and what a beautiful day it is here the sun is shining
01:58and look at Auckland Harbour really sparkling and we're fortunate because we're at Pukekohe Park
02:03Raceway this is a famous motorsport location originally home to the New Zealand Grand Prix and
02:08the Tasman series and all international greats they raced here Brabham McLaren Holm Moss Hill Clark Stewart
02:13and many more it's given us some great racing since the early 1960s and today the modern heroes return
02:20for the V8s we're here for the ITM 500 Auckland hi everybody thank you very much for joining us and
02:25boy we've had a spectacular weekend of motorsport here at Pukekohe so far we've had three races
02:30including one on Anzac Day and three different winners and very shortly we'll have qualifying
02:35coming up and then 200k's this afternoon including pit stops and I can assure you we're going to have
02:40an absolute ripper Mark Scaife joins me here five-time series champion six-time Bathurst winner
02:45we've talked about all the great things this track produces but I could see how enthusiastic you were
02:49about the history it's great yeah hi Neil hi everybody I love that vision I love the history the real DNA of
02:55motorsport in New Zealand some of the best drivers in the world have driven here right through to the
03:00Jim Richards and the Greg Murphys so we've seen great racing I love the vision the body language of
03:05the cars around here it's a great racetrack Crompo always is and the formats work very well as well
03:09we've had three 100k races so far 200 coming today as I said let's have a look at the highlights from
03:14yesterday races 11 and 12 they were absolutely breathtaking Scaifey and it was a great start Crompo
03:20James Courtney and Mark Winterbottom got away right alongside each other but very early we've seen
03:25Craig Lowndes off the road many times at the final corner Van Giesbergen was aggressive getting through
03:31the field and he actually shoved Jason Bright off the road there he got a 25 point fine for that we'll
03:37deal with that later Jason Bright was a punching bag Tim Slade was into the back of it then they bumped
03:42coming out of turn six Bright was deemed to be penalized and he got a drive-through penalty that's the
03:48reaction from the super cheap guys because it pulled the left hand front tire or wheel assembly
03:53from the super cheap auto Commodore then Robert Dahlgren retired in the s60 Volvo at the end of
03:58pit lane and he was basically blocking pit lane so that was the end of that that was a safety car period
04:03monster moment for Jack Perkins but the speed of Van Giesbergen coming through the field was very
04:10impressive he got down the inside of Scotty McLaughlin check this out Crompo right out sideways that was
04:16Jack Perkins and this man Mark Winterbottom went on to win a very impressive race 11 great drive by
04:23Mark Winterbottom and follows on from the tremendous performance at Winton as well he's on fire and his
04:28points tally reflects that so then to race number 12 another 100k race 35 laps and real pressure in
04:34this one too it was check this out there were three abreast coming into this complex some of the highest
04:39level driving Scott McLaughlin was leading and then he was battling with Winkup Van Giesbergen and that
04:45was Bright very early into the fence at turn four which at the end we really didn't know why that
04:50happened don't know why he got down there but this was a great pass it was probably the pass of the
04:55weekend Van Giesbergen down the inside of Winkup he looked like he was really on a charge now down the
05:01inside of the fellow New Zealander Scott McLaughlin so those guys had a pretty healthy exchange
05:06and there's there's dad Robert Shane's father very impressed by his young bloke's performance
05:12and another overtaking move great pass this Scott Pye with James Courtney stuff that we've seen this
05:19weekend through those final two turns 10 11 makes the palm sweat so great battle here also between
05:26Winterbottom and Winkup just as it was in 2013 under and over maneuvers going on left right and
05:31center and how's this Craig Lowndes escapes he's been on the grass about three or four times this
05:35weekend and got away with it positive move down the inside here for Mark Winterbottom nice under
05:40brakes and Scotty McLaughlin at this stage of the race was really beginning to struggle with tires
05:44but Van Giesbergen got it done just as he did in 2011 on the Sunday just south of here in Hamilton
05:51and the Kiwi crowd absolutely loved it so what it's done scapey is it's tightened up the points
05:56battle unbelievably and we've got a new leader Mark Winterbottom for Pepsi Max Ford Performance
06:01Racing is now ahead by just two points from Craig Lowndes who's been on top for the recent past and
06:06look down to position six Shane Van Giesbergen the penalty that you made mention of in that earlier
06:11race on Saturday race number 11 cost him 25 points and it's just shuffled him down the order there's
06:16lots of things to talk about including who might win the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy this is on for
06:21young and old as well scapey it's very much a question of the Aussies versus the Kiwis and in
06:25fact we might chuck up a viewer vote question about this very shortly but the boys are at it and the
06:29point score as you can see down there is pretty tight well that I think there's five that can win
06:33it so from Mark Winterbottom right through to Perkat who's fifth he's got 98 points so 118 plays 109
06:39108 107 and 98 pretty close you can be assured that with pit stops grabbing United E85 fuel new Dunlop
06:45tires and trying to strategize your way through 200 k's there'll be plenty on this afternoon in the pit
06:49lane we've got the team down there ready to pounce we've got Rihanna Mark Beretta and Mark Larkham
06:54Shane Van Giesbergen's VIP Commodore and believe me I know I rabbit on about it but no one drives one
07:02of these cars better than this kid his car control for me is second to nobody that doesn't necessarily
07:07mean you're always the fastest but today when you watch the telecast as we saw yesterday watch the body
07:13language of the car the way this guy has an innate ability to load the car up and let it be loaded
07:19where normally a lot of guys would lose control of the car he just handles it beautifully he really
07:23has got something very special he's sixth in the championship and I can tell you he is very very
07:28hungry to be the top Kiwi here this weekend well the championship leader Mark Winterbottom is pretty
07:34relaxed just in the back of the garage here getting set for the big day ahead not that it hasn't been a
07:39big weekend so far after a first place and a second place Frosty is our new championship leader and he
07:45leads the race in the Jason Richards trophy as well this has been an incredible time in his career
07:50he has emerged to the front of this lead if you talk to the guys and the team here there's a new
07:55confidence about Frosty there's a confidence in his ability to get the job done in his aggression
07:59as well you'll see that out on the racetrack more of it of course today but our championship leader is
08:05in a good space and he doesn't want to give it up it was a great day for the Holden racing team
08:11yesterday it had been 10 years since HRT last took a pole position here at Pukakoe Park and James
08:17Courtney was proud to donate his a thousand dollars from Amaral to the diggers of Australia and New
08:22Zealand also finishing on the podium in race 11 means he's finished on the podium every weekend so
08:28far in season 2014 Garth Tander also had a great day finishing fifth in race 12 and well and truly had
08:35the pace of the podium finishes the table is tight for the Jason Richards memorial trophy
08:41James Courtney currently sitting in second place he wants to hold it high and proud this afternoon
08:47and it does beg the question who can win the Jason Richards memorial trophy go to
08:54v8supercars.com.au and cast your vote or grab the seven sport app download it and have your say
08:59will it be Winterbottom Courtney Van Gisbergen or Scotty McLaughlin Aussies versus the Kiwis remember
09:05there's 150 points up for grabs to win this 200k race today wow we got some work to do this
09:11afternoon there's lots coming up we'll have qualifying very very shortly for race number 13 later in the
09:16day we'll also have that 200k race and some lucky participant around this racetrack may get the
09:22opportunity to grab can you believe this is your kind of money scapey one million dollars might be
09:27given away on the grid now this man he's a busy boy this weekend Fabian Kultad he's third in the
09:32championship at the moment and he takes us for a wild ride around this racetrack it's 3k's 11 turns
09:37here's Fabian in the Lockwood Racing entry
09:39Hi guys you've drawn the short straw with me Fabian Kultad here in the Lockwood Racing Commodore
09:46you're in my car I named it Tallulah after my favourite movie Cool Runnings we're a lap here at
09:53Kukakohe Park Raceway awesome joint got plenty of character here we are we're coming down the front
10:00straight just into sixth gear looking for the breaking reference wild little corner watch out for that bump
10:08easy tiger back to third gear over the curb second make sure you get it turned nice and hard hard on the throttle a little bit of oversteer on the exit
10:19hard on the throttle through the gears fifth six used to be a long back straight here at Kukakohe we're about to enter into this new complex turns five and six take a lot of curb second gear back to second hard on the throttle
10:38way easy
10:40looking for that apex slow first corner slowest corner on the track hard on the throttle on the exit
10:50third fourth under the Auckland Bridge
10:54hold on tighten those bouncy sketchy corner super fast bit of oversteer there we go guys hope you enjoyed
11:06we've got it Murph's the king of Kukakohe here us three Kiwis are trying to become the prince hope you have a good day cheers guys
11:14well we've played the qualifying game 12 times so far this year and we've had quite a variety of people who've grabbed an armour or pole position
11:34welcome back to our coverage of the V8 supercars championship you can see what a beautiful day it is and what a great scene it is in pit lane
11:40I know Larko standing by right down there at the moment at the Jack Daniels Nissan motorsport tent and I'm puzzled Larko because for Rick Kelly we saw him super fast in practice one and in the first quality but it hasn't totally translated what's going on there?
11:54well mate I think we can actually expect something from these guys
11:56well mate I think we can expect something from these guys so I mean all in all they've been there or thereabouts
12:00I mean the Hornets have had a couple of top tens which is great work but they got caught out in that red flag incident in one of the qualifying sessions and Rick was on an absolute front row lap and unfortunately the red flag came out just as he crossed the line
12:14now a couple of other interesting things to watch for we love our qualifying sessions particularly when the guys have ties a bit of a scan along the pit lane most teams still have at least two sets of green ties expect this to go right to the wire
12:28helmet cam over the right shoulder mounted to the right of the helmet of Rick Kelly
12:34now red ball racing is at the top of pit lane but they're not at the top of the championship anymore
12:38Craig Lowndes giving that up to Mark Winterbottom yesterday now these guys are discussing this morning the fact that they've got a good qualifying car but they just can't get it to where they want it in the race
12:48couple of fourths for Jamie Wincup yesterday he's fifth in the championship Lowndes sits in second we know these guys are good we know they're a class act and we know that they will be there at the end of the year and that's what they're doing at the moment they're taking a look at the end of the year and that's where they're projecting out
13:02traditionally this is a bogey round for red bull racing and so far it's living up to expectations
13:08yeah and it was a tough day for Erebus motorsport yesterday both cars struggled in qualifying they also got caught out with that red flag situation which means they started the races from the back of the field and struggled to make up many spots
13:22and also suffered a clutch failure on the start line however Friday both qualified well Will in fifth Lee in twelfth and finished both in fifth and twelfth it just goes to show how critical qualifying is they'll be looking to get that Friday form to set them up for a big race this afternoon
13:40lots of onboard coverage in and around all of the cars in the field this weekend the entry list though for the ITM 500 Auckland reigning champion Jamie Wincup Red Bull Racing Australia Garth Tander Lee Holdsworth Mark Winterbottom and Chas Mostert for Pepsi Max Ford Performance Racing
13:55Todd Kelly Jason Bright who was in the wars a bit yesterday Jason Bright after winning on Anzac Day Friday Will Davison you heard Rihanna describe his problems from yesterday good consistency from Coulthard but not enough speed at the moment in the Lockwood entry
14:08Scotty Pye there car 16 but minus his teammate David Wall big damage on Friday after contact with Chas Mostert at turn 10-11 that car's out for the weekend going back on the jig in Queensland
14:19Russell Ingle a little bit disappointing in qualifying also forged his way forward races very well McLaughlin has been one of the pace setters Robert Dahlgren a very ordinary weekend he's been a rookie here at Pukekohe
14:30David Reynolds Van Giersberg and Perkat Moffat and Lowndes who has not been fast enough
14:36let's take a look at the track because this as we've described so far is a very wild layout it's only 2.91 kilometres 11 turns and just over half the lap is full throttle it's very fast it's got great character and it's one of the best racetracks in terms of the final sector and the first sector for the guys who are brave the sector that we're going to be talking about mostly will be sector one it's roughly 15 seconds Jason Bright
15:06so far this year has been the fastest and sector two is James Courtney so we're going to be talking about those two sectors and as Neil said we've got 10 in car cameras across the field to show you every bit of action from this 20 minute session
15:20this is weird Mark because both the Red Bull Racing Australia cars have gone straight ahead at the end of the back straight so qualifying is underway cars are on the circuit for armour or qualifying and both Winkup and Lowndes made mistakes down there
15:32driving standards observer Jason Barguana in the races will tolerate drivers going through there a couple of times but after that he'll trigger a bad sportsmanship flag
15:41it's just weird it's weird that they both do I mean one going down there that makes sense but when they both do it that's a bit odd but here are two of the
15:48Pepsi Max entries on screen as well it's been a good weekend so far for Mostert and Winterbottom and they've opened their account well here in qualifying
15:55Mostert is the fastest man so is that coming to the circuit this morning crowd day for him yesterday seeing young Chas up on the podium again
16:02here's Winkup the replay what does this explain to us well a lot a fair bit of rear break
16:07is the answer to that question out of control it explains he waved to the crowd up there
16:11but not what you want to be doing before it all starts nicer to do that after it's all done
16:16so that was a bit of a moment and then he'd be a teammate to do the same thing Neil as you said
16:20very strange mate we're on board with Scott McLaughlin the local New Zealand hero
16:24did you see how late Scotty grabs uh third gear it was and then had to sort of straighten it up again and grab second gear in fact he might have even got back to first there I reckon he was having such a moment
16:34however he is the fastest man one minute 3.7 McLaughlin
16:38picking his brake marker here 255 kilometres an hour before he tries to stop it
16:45you of the boys are having trouble up there at the moment there's quite a nasty little crease in the road there
16:50that just upsets the rear of the car at the peak braking value
16:54and you're seeing on board and external shots where they're having to really catch those cars
16:59that was a great bit of car control wasn't it Neil he had the car sideways
17:04he gathered it up and I've been saying all weekend
17:07extraordinary vision through 10 and 11
17:11but I've been saying all weekend the front of the car looks very accurate
17:14but the back of the car through the race goes away on him
17:17this is a good lap for McLaughlin the sector splits indicate that he's going to improve his time
17:21and he does
17:21one minute 3.5 Scott McLaughlin his teammate Robert Dalger has gone to P2
17:26that's the best we've seen Robert perform so far this year
17:29remember he had problems yesterday
17:30he was off the road down between 3 and 4 earlier in the weekend
17:35then they had a failure
17:37give it some jandal
17:39they would almost have stimulated sales of those things here I would think
17:45Gary Rogers is the real character owner of that team
17:49and here's his driver Scott McLaughlin fastest man at the moment
17:52he's had two whole positions so far this year
17:56gee he was absolutely
18:00on the limit in that run down 3 and 4
18:04this rear is pretty stable
18:09sorry the turn is better
18:11the rear system is a little bit twisty
18:13really the whole way through the turn
18:16conversation there between Scott McLaughlin and Richard Holway
18:24and we had a shot there of jandal cam
18:25so you can see Scotty doing his fancy footwork
18:28Lee Holdsworth
18:29winner at Winton
18:30coming into the pit lane entry
18:3340km an hour
18:34so the order at the moment with
18:36the first little cycle of tyres
18:38having gone through the cars
18:39McLaughlin
18:39then Dalger
18:40Holdsworth P3
18:41we just saw him
18:42Winkup
18:42Caruso
18:43Davison
18:43Van Gisbergen
18:44and Scotty Pye
18:46we're back soon
18:46battle for race number 13 in qualifying continues
18:54armour all pole position
18:55and the man that's gone provisionally fastest at this point
18:57is Jason Bright
18:58but we just caught the last bit of the lap
19:00for Chas Mostert
19:01who's just lowered the number to a 1.3.1
19:04this is on board with Jamie Winkup
19:07he's currently fifth
19:09McLaughlin's on a very quick lap here as well
19:11in third at the moment
19:12so it's Mostert
19:13then Bright
19:13then McLaughlin
19:14David Reynolds is in the pit lane
19:16active on the track
19:17his Winkup
19:18Moffat has just gone to second
19:20in the Norton
19:21Missing
19:21nice job
19:221 minute 3.4 for young James
19:24we're riding here with McLaughlin
19:27and Will Davison
19:28Neil has also come up
19:29in the Erebus Mercedes
19:31he's up to third
19:32so great effort there
19:33Mostert
19:34Moffat
19:34Davison
19:35Slade
19:36Bright
19:36McLaughlin
19:37and Tim Slade
19:39went off in the break
19:40straight ahead
19:41at the end of
19:42the back straight turn 5
19:43but he's recovered
19:44on his subsequent lap
19:45to get it right up
19:46into the top
19:47and now Lee Holdsworth
19:48improves his time to third
19:49we go on board
19:50with McLaughlin
19:51who's got a major arm wrestle
19:52going with that Volvo
19:53through turn 1
19:54and he's flying
19:561 minute 3.1
19:57Scotty McLaughlin
19:58his pace
19:59in that first sector
20:00he's run into the braking area
20:02at 1
20:02and the pace he carries
20:03through the fast right hander
20:05and across the kerbing
20:06is fantastic
20:07Wincup improves
20:09that's P4
20:10here's his teammate Lowndes
20:12he's down the order
20:13in 23rd at the moment
20:14he needs a big improvement
20:15in the hurry
20:16and we were on board
20:17with McLaughlin
20:17for that first sector
20:18you made reference
20:19just the fastest first sector
20:2015.44
20:21for McLaughlin
20:22so McLaughlin
20:23from Mostert
20:24Holdsworth
20:25Winnerbottom out
20:25up into fourth
20:26Wincup
20:27a very good lap
20:28on the last lap
20:29to fifth
20:30Moffat then next
20:31now McLaughlin's gone
20:32through the second
20:33timing intermediate
20:34and it's all green
20:35in the base of your screen
20:36so he's now threatening
20:38to improve
20:38his own numbers here
20:39he's on a 63.14
20:42through the final sector
20:43teetering on the edge
20:45of that concrete
20:45and McLaughlin
20:47shooting for another pole
20:48this weekend
20:48and he's the first
20:49into the twos
20:51one minute 2.9
20:52for McLaughlin
20:53nice work the Kiwi
20:54Lee Holdsworth
20:56followed him
20:57that was very clever
20:58he did a 3-3 also
20:59so he stays in third
21:01Todd Kelly
21:01up to third now
21:02with a 3-2-1
21:04this is the promise
21:05from the Jack Daniels
21:06Nissans that
21:07Mark Larkham alluded
21:08to before
21:09because the man
21:09on screen
21:10Rick Kelly
21:11on Friday
21:12he was on target
21:13for a second
21:13or a third
21:14but remember
21:14he bunkered it
21:15triggered a red flag
21:16that put him
21:16at the tail
21:17of the field
21:18takes all the
21:18confidence away
21:19and makes the race
21:20day very hard work
21:21and his brother
21:22was quick earlier
21:23in the weekend
21:23as well
21:24in fact Caruso
21:25was up there
21:25earlier in this session
21:26they've done an
21:27engine change
21:28with that car
21:28and they found
21:28a weeping shock
21:29with it as well
21:30so looking for
21:32improvements
21:32where does Rick Kelly
21:33drop in here
21:34he's currently 20th
21:35and faults
21:36to position 4
21:37right behind his brother
21:38it's Kelly Kelly
21:393 and 4
21:40Todd and Rick
21:41so 62.99
21:45Scott McLaughlin
21:45in the Volvo
21:46from Chas Mostert
21:47both of those guys
21:48are in the pit lane
21:49and then the JD
21:50misses a 3rd and 4th
21:51well you've joined us
21:57at an exciting time
21:58it's just on
21:592.5 minutes
22:00remaining in Armour
22:01qualifying for race
22:02number 13
22:02and Craig Lowndes
22:03is desperately
22:04trying to elevate
22:05from position 23
22:07at the moment
22:07that is second last
22:08in this field
22:09he had the rear
22:10of the car
22:11wagging under brakes
22:12into turn 5
22:13so the body language
22:15there's no shortage
22:16of commitment here
22:17but I'm not sure
22:17that the machinery
22:18is delivering for him
22:19at the moment
22:19the car is dancing
22:20all over the place
22:21and he's wide
22:22of the mark at turn 1
22:23couldn't touch
22:24the apex down there
22:25they're all chasing
22:26Scott McLaughlin
22:271 minute 2.99
22:28the time
22:29Lowndes has now
22:30jumped into 8th position
22:31in the break
22:32Nick Percat
22:33who was the sole car
22:34on the track
22:34by the way
22:35moved up to 6th
22:36he's had a good weekend
22:37so far
22:38he's qualified at 8th
22:39and 2 seed placings
22:41for the 3 races
22:42previous
22:43and has had a
22:44terrific weekend
22:44Dave Reynolds
22:45Neil has just
22:46popped up
22:46into 3rd spot
22:47as the
22:483rd of the
22:50FPR cars
22:51Mossett
22:522nd
22:53Reynolds
22:53and down the
22:55order a little bit
22:55Winterbottom
22:56they've just gone out
22:57so Mark Winterbottom's
22:58in front of Mossett
22:59on the road
23:00but Mossett's
23:01taking ground
23:02off Mark Winterbottom
23:02it's actually faster
23:03McLaughlin now
23:05is one of the fastest
23:05first sector
23:06so he's further
23:07improved his own
23:08first sector split
23:09so they found
23:09a shock absorber
23:10problem with this car
23:11last night
23:12for Michael Caruso
23:13they've already
23:14done an engine change
23:15he was a little
23:15wide of his target
23:16there through the
23:17final corner
23:18but he managed
23:18to stay on
23:19that concrete
23:19apron
23:20so where's
23:21car number 36
23:22drop in
23:22and the answer
23:23is fourth
23:23and left
23:24off the road
23:25and buried
23:25now this will
23:28strip his time
23:29away
23:30because I would
23:31imagine
23:31that this will
23:32trigger a flag
23:33we've got one
23:34minute remaining
23:3522
23:36James Courtney
23:38position 11
23:39so Reynolds
23:43and Mossett
23:43had a bit of
23:44aggro there
23:44between each other
23:45then
23:45as the team
23:47mates
23:47look at
23:48McLaughlin
23:49splits here
23:49at the moment
23:50and it's
23:50impressive
23:51Scotty McLaughlin
23:53continues to
23:53find speed
23:54that was his
23:54best lap so far
23:56so McLaughlin
24:01Mossett
24:01Reynolds
24:02Caruso
24:02we were riding
24:03or watching
24:04Michael Caruso
24:06at the closeout
24:07of his lap
24:07but that's a
24:08great performance
24:09in comes

24:11so New Zealanders
24:12on the front row
24:13of the grid
24:13McLaughlin
24:14and Van Gisburgh
24:15and if it stays
24:15as it is
24:16only 20 seconds
24:17remaining
24:18remember
24:18Craig Lowndes
24:19second fastest
24:20time meal
24:21was 23rd before
24:22so he'll go
24:23right to the

24:24he's
24:277th at the
24:28moment
24:29he's had a
