01:47their feet because sometimes it is about so much more than winning history is made in these moments
01:55and there are many more to be written in 2013 this is unbelievable what about this
02:03was the call this is an extraordinary drive for Will Davison you're a legend that's as good as it gets
02:13and as tight as it will ever be wow that was fantastic motor racing the V8 supercars on seven
02:24it's already been a season of emotion a season of first and of course of change so what will the
02:34west deliver well so far picture perfect weather you are watching the V8 supercars on seven sport this
02:40is the fourth stop on the season calendar and this weekend it's races 10 11 and 12 we're 50 kilometers
02:47north of Perth and we're at Barbagallo Raceway it hosted its first Australian touring car championship race
02:5340 years ago 2.42 kilometers seven turns a top speed of 252 kilometers per hour surface here is
03:03absolutely brutal so tire life is critical it's a quick lap it's done in under a minute but you go off
03:09and you're in the sand so today it's the 60 60 super sprint format two halves of 25 laps each with a 15
03:17minute half time break in between it was an absolute hit at Tasmania it is sure to be a thriller once
03:24again alongside me in the commentary box we've got mark scape and neil crompton and down in pit lane
03:28we'd like to welcome a three-time winner here and of course four-time bathurst champion to our coverage
03:33greg murphy is with mark larkin yeah thanks matty down here with greg and mate um look love this circuit it's a
03:40hard one you've got great experience got some success here mate qualifying let's talk about it
03:4560 60 format coming up this is going to be critical tire management track management very small circuit
03:5128 cars what are the big ticket items for you well they did have a you know obviously limited amount
03:55of tires to go practicing on they've got limited but very limited amount of tires for all these races
03:59today one thing that i really looked at in p4 was jamie wincup he did a race run effectively 23 laps
04:05at a two-second drop off from the start of the session to the to the finish that was pretty
04:10impressive but it is all about looking after your tires and this is the first time really we're going
04:15to see where everyone stands because so far this weekend in the practice sessions not everyone has
04:19put a lot of tires on their cars well it's been great one to watch these the cars exiting behind us
04:23watch this can't wait marco and welcome to your murph who's filling in for mark barretta this weekend
04:28barretts is off on the tour de cure as he always does raising some great money for charity so good on
04:34you mate we wish you all the very best as you cycle away and cycling into this lap will be super
04:41important get the heat through the tires you're going to hear a lot about tire wear on the surface
04:46a lot of complaining nobody will come out and say it's great so it's a 20-minute qualifying session
04:52determined pole position for as we mentioned the 6060 super sprint format which first appeared on our
04:59register in tasmania was taken out by fabian kulfa and they're on the soft tire this weekend you can
05:05see the indicator in the windscreen there the orange or amber light indicating the soft tire and the soft
05:12tire will produce a lap time in the late 55s we saw scott mclough run fastest in p4 he did a 55.6 and they've
05:22got 24 of those soft tires six sets for the weekend so a lot of work i wouldn't like to be a left-hand
05:27rear tire proper they really suffer around here this particular spot at turn seven and also coming
05:34out of the previous corner down in the bowl at turn six there's a long long low the tires get very very
05:40hot down there they don't recover there's very little recovery time the nature of the surface here
05:45is such that the material that binds the stones has disappeared over the years so there's not
05:50very much of the tire surface that actually makes contact with the road and therefore the cars slide
05:55around a lot he's almost gone then big big slot the slide you were just as you were saying he was running
06:01wide he couldn't get to the left and it's the only left-hand corner on the whole of the track so it's
06:07quite a strange place with a number of right-hand corners seven corners of turns in total and the
06:14left-hander at turn four almost then for wing cup off the road he ran right out to the edge of the road
06:20just stayed on and that would be because the right hand tires weren't warm enough when he turned that
06:24in so they'll they'll be doing their very best to get the phasing of these tires together to make sure
06:30the front tires in good nick before the rear tire gets hurt in the first and second laps
06:36of this qualifying session yeah and an interesting start to the session scafie we said there you
06:41know time and tire manager are going to be critical but no fewer than six cars sat in here and are still
06:45sitting here at the start of the session including both the brad jones cars of coultard and jason bright
06:51coultard sitting here on a set of wets he's even going to go out and warm the car up before they
06:55put a set of tires on so they're going to wait for the track to settle some rubber to go here go down and
07:00optimize the track condition they did a similar thing in practice four as well they waited out
07:07the first 10 minutes of the final practice session that we had earlier today so the strategies have
07:12been playing out through the practice and now through this qualifying session as well as we go on board
07:17with jamie winkup three-time race winner at this circuit if it's your first time joining us you missed
07:22out on v8 extra a couple of the key points for this weekend garth tander will make his 200th
07:28championship event start become just the eighth man in history to do so 56-2 for jamie winkup and the
07:34other critical one is chas mostard has joined the main game in car number 12 replacing johnny reed
07:40and wilson security dick johnson racing and chas is currently in seventh position just going back to
07:48turn four there a moment ago as mario engels in a bit of strife in the arabis motorsport mercedes
07:53amg entry there winkup was massively sideways at turn four it was way more than he would have wanted
07:59he would have had a huge amount of opposite lock to catch it but he still ended up being the quickest
08:03man of the 56-2 compares to last year's time different car different time different conditions
08:10because they had a bit of a wet start to the weekend last year of a 56-3 this is james moffett the
08:16norton 360 entry here's tony alberto they had a little problem yesterday with a belt on the
08:21engine of the car they've had some power steering dramas with this car notably in new zealand a
08:26couple of weeks ago and you can see he's got a green box to his name there the timing sectors that
08:30we'll make reference to here the first one intermediate one is just after turn five at
08:34the crest of the hill he's coming up now to intermediate two as they grab sixth gear on
08:40the run down to the final corner turn seven it's 2.4 kilometers seven corners this is the last corner
08:47and they're allowed to straddle that curb but they're not allowed to go wider than that curb and try and
08:52make an advantage if they do there's a little telltale device down there that electronically records the car
08:59going wide
09:02here's moffett look at the sparks flying on that car as it bottoms out on the top of that curving if you
09:07straddle the curves it actually strikes the transaxle on the ground on the concrete there stood up there
09:14yesterday and watched the fireworks show it's a big one uh down here in the pit lane it's uh number 18
09:19alex davison's car they've still got an electrical issue with that car they were after p4 they thought
09:24that they might have been on top of it they changed a whole lot of stuff to do with it they thought it
09:28was a sensor maybe even just a power steering sensor there as well that could have been the issue but
09:32it doesn't seem like they've managed to get on top of it he's still got a bit of an electrical issue
09:37that's causing him some problems so he's gone out now on a brand new set of tires on a green set uh he
09:42rode it a set of uh weds to start with gone out now to try and put a lap in but we'll keep an eye on
09:47his progress and see if that issue gets any worse two west aussies in the field this weekend garth
09:53hand is one of them and the other car 88 is on screen there at the moment and it's appropriate
09:58because he's just gone to the top of the pile dean fiore 56-1 the fastest man in a car built by these
10:04guys a triple eight race engineering but in different colors red bull for craig lounge who's had 13
10:09race wins at this venue over the years vast amount of experience and craig either has great weekends here
10:17he has absolute shockers it looks like he might be on for a great one because he's just punched out
10:21a five seven 55.7 for lounge is alex davidson that greg murphy just made mention of the moment ago is it
10:28running on all eight doing what he wants we'll have a listen
10:34it sounds like this
10:35it's got a running engine note at that point it's not too bad because it's just gone to position two
10:45so a 56 even for alex davidson so it sounds like they may have cured the rules you're right though
10:51all of the ford performance racing cars have got a very distinctive engine note it's very throaty
10:55so allowance davidson alex dean fiore winkup pie todd kelly rick kelly russell engel james
11:06moffett and murrow engel that is your top 10. well we mentioned it before 70 of the race winners
11:13over the last 10 years here have come from the front row of the grid if there's a place where
11:19qualifying is so crucial this welcome back as qualifying continues here at barbagello on a
11:26super big lockup for the pepsi max afford and a big ditch into the sand as well mark winterbottom
11:35though 55.7 leads the way so it's winterbottom lounge bright david reynolds courtney van gisbergen
11:42alex davidson dean fiore david wall and scott mclaughlin make up your 10. he had a
11:48big moment there in the last corner he's the fastest man to the second timing intermediate
11:52and that would have cost fabian coultard he's gone to position three on that lap but he'll be cursing
11:57himself but bobbled under brakes into the final corner and then kicked him wide straddled the
12:01curve so it's winterbottom lounge coultard then bright his teammate there's jason then it's reynolds
12:08who's finding his forward with this new car courtney who was second at the moment but call it off now
12:12andrew edwards jason bright's engineer and then premise in the top 10 at the moment for fujitsu
12:20and then van gisbergen alex davis in nights lee holdsworth upgrade to the engines of these cars
12:25this weekend it's been a big talking point up and down the garages a change to the induction system
12:31on the engine lee was encouraged by the car's performance yesterday here's the second flying
12:35lap now for coultard he's slightly down on the reference at the second intermediate he turns in
12:40very shallow doesn't he into the last corner he doesn't use all of the available space
12:46but he's been doing it the whole time and and he had a lot of trouble in p4 in the practice session
12:50we just watched a little while ago where scott mclaughlin was fastest with a 55.6
12:56so slightly faster than what quinnabottom's done now uh maybe it had massive drama then
13:01two neil he missed the last lap or the last corner of two of those laps when we watched there's uh that
13:08gap there 0.73 from first to 27th notice that tander's 27th at the moment here he is on screen
13:17so i don't know whether there was an issue delaying him or he's just looking for a traffic gap because
13:21what's happening out there at the moment is there's about half a dozen cars that are on the track everybody
13:26else is in the lane and now garth joins them so perhaps our intrepid reporters greg murphy led by
13:33greg murphy can find out what the story is he won't want to be down there for too long greg of course
13:39with us the seven sport coverage this weekend however he will be joining the holden racing
13:45team for the endurance cup later in the year for sand out for bathurst and for the goldcars
13:48yeah alex david has still got an issue with this car they've had to bond it up and uh looking underneath it
13:53uh clearly something that is affecting the performance of the car everyone now is coming
13:57coming into the pit lane a lot of cars were late to go out uh on their first set of tires so everyone
14:02seems to still have another set brand new set of dunlops to throw on uh to go their second run but
14:07let's keep an eye on alex here there's a lot of action going on inside the car here trying to
14:11determine i think uh obviously what that problem was but uh fpr will davidson about to go out on his uh
14:17next set of tires it's a perilous place to be too pit lane here at barbagello look at that concrete
14:22apron how slippery it is especially when there's sand and dust all over it but when those cars are
14:28exiting their bays they do the big flick out of there it's uh it can be quite dangerous especially
14:34down at red bull racing australia because jamie winkup being first in the queue doesn't have far
14:39to get the get the car out they look really good don't they yeah this livery now we haven't seen it
14:46for many years where both the fpr cars have the same livery for the weekend and i i reckon that black
14:51look it's a much more prominent race car livery for them for the weekend lucko standing between
14:58the two red bull cars and it's really ominous when these guys they've come in done their times they've
15:02sat here for ages and i think it really typifies the differences between these two guys as race
15:07drivers craig sits in his car cool calm and collected they've put new tires on it they haven't
15:11made a change to the car and he's just very relaxed the whole time and i'm talking now six seven maybe
15:16eight minutes jamie winkup is sat in his car with his little uh tablet in front of him talking to
15:21mark dutton his engineer going through the absolute detail so one of these guys is really fast and
15:26talented based on really what he feels through the seat of his pants the other guy jamie winkup being
15:30much more technical uh really likes to delve in deep and understand what the car's doing quite
15:36remarkable to watch what is remarkable out there at the moment is there's just two race cars on the
15:42track you've just seen them both will davidson on screen at turn one russell engle's the other one
15:47so that leaves a heap of cars in the pit lane so these guys have got an empty track you've got a
15:51little over 2 400 meters of racetrack if they grizzle about traffic now they're hard to please
15:57although they will grizzle because they'll all be out there together very soon they will grizzle there
16:01be no doubt about that let's have a look at the first sector here so 0.03 down for davidson and one of
16:07the reasons we're seeing this guys we've seen this happen before everywhere but more so here
16:11if you can be the last car to go around remember you've got 28 cars or 27 cars in front of you on
16:16green tires laying down rubber we know the soft tire lays rubber down nicely onto the circuit which gives
16:22us additional grip and if you look at the timing at the end of this session you'll know just how
16:26important a thousandths of a second might be so this will elevate will from 22nd up to third he's
16:35effectively done a shootout lap he's the only bloke out there he is it's remarkable i've never seen
16:40that the only guy on the circuit is will davidson very wide at turn one then he ended up on the trail
16:48throttle and trail braking also so zero percentage throttle and on the brake pedal but it ended up
16:54very wide in the middle of the corner so wide that he started to pick up the rocks on the inside
16:57it's pretty dusty out there so i don't know that he'll be thrilled with that look at them all down
17:01there it's a traffic jam in pit lane there's literally only one active car murph well all
17:06hell is about to break loose the cars are just starting to be pushed back they're all coming
17:10out simultaneously and uh we can see the two hrt cars sitting here still everyone's on a green set
17:15of tires we're going to see some action here in a minute i reckon there's going to be a few people
17:19disappointed when they get held up on this very short barbago racetrack but look at them they're like
17:23ants they're all following each other i wasn't going to say sheep but they look like ants hey murph can you
17:28sneak in there and find out at hrt why garth is down in 27th is he was he balked on his first set
17:34of tires on his first run i'll find out see if we can get some yeah good luck to me test here
17:40it's a kiwi test mark barretta would have already found that out by now
17:46like the diving will hold up a number at the end of this so there they go as murph described so there's
17:52a heap of cars all pouring out of the pit lane and the next cry that you'll hear on the radio is there's
17:57no space so winter bottom is the target he's done a 55.7 he shares that number with craig lounges
18:03remarkably it's 0.3 of a second covering 11 cars at the moment here's alex davidson and as greg reported
18:09before there's a little gremlin in this car that's been nagging at them they're fiddling with but it's
18:14still had pretty good pace murph steve um can you give us an update on on just gt's run the first run
18:20there that he had uh did he get a clean run or did something happen there no we're just trying to
18:25optimize the tire pressures at the moment um hopefully we'll get it on this on this run and
18:30you should see an improvement everyone's leaving it to the last second aren't they
18:33it's about it's about bringmanship at the moment isn't it i mean the track track's getting better
18:38i mean it's hotter but uh everyone wants to try and get the best condition for their tires
18:42do you want a cv i could take over if anyone's interested in pulling in
18:46i thought you were on the team already oh that's right i forgot thanks you've already got a job so
18:50qualifying three minutes to go something else that's got a big question mark next to it michael
18:55caruso is just hitting out now for his first lap so we're going to get to the bottom of that he has
19:00not played a part up to this point as alex tries to work around all the traffic here in the gel wind
19:07forward and two green boxes is a very good sight for him did you see that in the background that was
19:13david wall in the grass at the top of the hill there he is he was in the grass at the top of the hill
19:19because one of the hrt cars and ingle were weaving he come over the hill he couldn't see them
19:25and he went into the grass on the left it was wild that is 255 kilometers an hour and there's only
19:32two and a half minutes remaining in this session so alex davison at the moment has done the fastest lap
19:36and the red flags out so those on their lap can't get this recorded this is a big big moment
19:49that's david walls on the radio in the background describing what happened win cup was the fastest
19:54to the second sector and we just saw him dive to the pits alex davison is the fastest man on a 55
20:00five he's got nearly two tenths of a second margin over mark winter bottom the red flags out and the
20:06clock has frozen at two minutes and 24 seconds they'll leave it short for tomorrow 45 here
20:15and see they've all ducked straight to the end of the pit lane so that they can go out there's
20:19charlie schwirkolt the owner the gerald wind car who technically could have his first pole position here
20:25yes it's just about being in the right place at the right time he does have pace look in the
20:30background the boys are warming the tires scafee saw it because david wall had the headlights on
20:35he would have been squeezed off to the grass they're doing 255 kilometers an hour on the run to turn
20:41seven they don't stop well on the grass and gee the sand trap did a fantastic job there protecting
20:48our fans to pluck the tire off the rim the fans our officials and also the driver in the car and the
20:54point that's worth making is that he was on for position five so we said about the traffic that
21:00was not his fault he came over the hill on his fast lap going to be p5 did a great job in the previous
21:05session in p4 is going to be probably his best qualifying performance and you end up there garth
21:11tander is 27th so he's got two minutes and 24 seconds that also involves an out lap to try and record a
21:19time and they'll be nose to tail in traffic murph yeah michael caruso is in a similar position
21:24he actually sat in pit lane waiting he was only going to do one run on one set of green tires and
21:28save a set for later on so he is in a precarious position last spot at the moment uh having only
21:33done one lap which was that one then out red flag has ruined that and he's lined up to have another
21:38crack at it yeah and sometimes that's a smart thing to do because as we said you get all the benefit
21:42of the rubber down but you run the risk of exactly what we've just seen now something very unique up
21:47the front end of pit lane where red bull are as a result of their championship position last year
21:51they get the advantage jamie winkup has just come in pulled off the set of tires that he just went
21:55out on and has put on a green set of tires now from my observations i think he will be the only
22:00guy going out on a green set of tires works for him here because he's gone up and he's lined up right
22:04near the front again so he'll charge out with two and a half minutes to get he'll get around on his
22:09out lap or his warm-up lap and he'll still get that flying lap in so that's quite a if you have a look
22:13down here and see that brand new set of uh of green rubber so that's uh that's going to work
22:18for them because a lot of guys are going to hurt out there because they would have gone out
22:21sped up started to consume that green tire and once you take the edge off it believe me it is
22:26never the same and they're going to have to jam into the queue to get out nobody's going to want
22:30to let them in so watch this in replay so have a look 255 kilometers an hour david wall
22:36over the rise this roller coaster down the hill and ingle moves over he has no road so that's the
22:43last time we saw the car in the grass at almost 260k then he emerges sideways this this trap has done
22:51an unbelievable job to save that car it's a miracle it didn't flip oh man that's fast i don't think i've
22:59ever seen a car go in there as quick as that so the guys from wilson security as i said we're on
23:07for position five now the drama to unfold here mark larkham's rolled us through look at the damage
23:12from that wheel the drama to unfold is that in two minutes 24 jamie wing cup is 18th although he's got
23:20green tires on he'll be hurt in the traffic he won't get out in front because winter bottom will
23:25stop him coming out but we're going to have to watch the push and shove because they're going to
23:29try and wedge the car into the queue exactly so we need to yeah good luck because there's not going
23:34to be too many others out there he and lounge are going to have to jam into the queue from the
23:38inside lane and everybody else will be nose to tail and try and shove them to the back of the queue
23:41and we would not let them out at all no because they're not exactly courteous when it comes to
23:45stuff like this yeah well i'm just hanging here because i reckon it's going to be the best bit of action
23:48on the track in the next 10 minutes and up ahead of me i don't know if you can see there's a
23:51there's a bollard that defines the the pit lane the fast area of the pit lane if you like so they've
23:56sort of got to get around that bollard so there's not room for two cars and i can just see these guys
24:00talking down here there's no one too keen to let him in and and craig lounge right behind us so this
24:04is going to be great to watch could be the best overtaking maneuver of the day here's another thing
24:07to consider if the timing monitor stays as it is alex davidson on pole mark winter bottom next to him
24:14they were face to face last time we saw them in new zealand exchanging details for christmas cards
24:19so this is the gamesmanship folks if you're in the fast lane you do not have to let the guys out so
24:25i promise you if if we were in the fast lane there is no way that guy gets out and he got out
24:32no i can't believe that that blows me away competition is such that you do not let that happen
24:39listen to you oh man somebody get him a race i think he's saying matthew that if we were coming
24:44out of the pit apron he wouldn't have let us in there you get the impression he wants to beat you
24:51seriously settle down
24:54straight through no no no no gentlemen no no you go first no no no please please don't make you go
24:58look at all the way oh my god
25:03no no it's lovely it's beautiful beautiful
25:06here's some frantic work going on here on the 22 courtney hrt car that you can see some damage i'm not
25:10sure did you guys see where this came from the damage on the side of the car here they're frantically
25:14working on the front of the car they've got suspension damage and with the time that's
25:18remaining i don't think we're going to see him uh join the track again all right so it's all coming
25:24unstuck fairly rapidly there so james courtney currently in night so we've got a minute and 20
25:29seconds left and all they've got to do is get across the control line to get one flying lap but it's
25:35the proximity to other cars it's going to bite him 100 and the bit that's unfair is car 21 is going
25:41to lose his time for something that wasn't his fault because he caused the red flag so here's the
25:48scenario alex davidson currently and provisionally provisionally has pole position mark winterbottom
25:56is second we know that jamie wing cup has a brand new set of tires to put out there for this one
26:02flying lap he's in 17. i think we'll find that when uh cool heads provide at the end of the session
26:08they look at the onboard vision v8 supercar camera in that car of david walls there's a big chance that
26:15they may well have a rethink on that one in fact i reckon that damage that murk was pointing to
26:22suggests that james courtney may have had a role in all that with david wall it's all being looked at so
26:27uh wall ingle and courtney in the incident turn seven is going to be investigated uh not surprisingly
26:33at the end of the session look how close wing cup is and look at winterbottoms
26:38times lighting up the green boxes as well he gets another lap because there's seven seconds to go
26:44and he goes to the top great job jamie wink up 55 39. cool tired second lounge third wind cut now bright
26:51jumps into second so it's wind cut bright cool tired lounge alex davidson punch back to fifth he's still in the
26:57moment then winterbottom davidson who's in the garage van gisbergen holdsworth and reynolds
27:02in the 10. so remember winkup can still go again he's still out there he crossed the line before the
27:09checkered flag fell angle to ninth in the mercedes that's a great performance van gisbergen on the
27:16cusp in tenth courtney's dropping back with that problem so winkup is the target 55-3 bright
27:23cool tart lounge davidson and chas mostyn in on debu is inside the top 10 car number 12. that's cool
27:31so here we go fabian koulthard's still on a flyer really solid work yeah he's pulling out of it
27:37i'm confident the last corner the car's just so unpredictable one to break
27:41sorry about that but look you did a great job um yeah really good work
27:49phil keith engineer so wind cup bright cool tart and this was a great save by wind cup to be in the
27:56traffic jam get back out get a set of another set of tires on and there's mark dutton and grabbing a pole
28:04position from it it's the fourth pole for jamie in 2013 it puts him to outright second on the all-time
28:10list above use gafe he's now got 42 career pole positions what a bizarre finish so an all-hold in
28:16front row alex davidson the leading forward terrific effort from the gildwin pile pilot mark winterbottom
28:22will be in position six and as we mentioned chas mostyn on debu inside the top 10 with maro engel from
28:28mercedes-benz amg erebus motorsport also in the 10. david reynolds 15th in the rear of the field we
28:34find scotty pie michael caruso todd kelly and david wall the jamie wing cup at the deck goes out
28:42fires in a 55.3 to take pole position for the 60 60 super sprint format
28:54the red bull racing australia's jamie wing cup has now joined the great peter
28:58brock in terms of most pole positions at this circuit he's now got seven at barbagello raceway
29:05as we mentioned four for the season and now 42 for his career good start to the weekend they did it at
29:13the death 1500 bucks looks pretty in the bank and larko's down there yeah i'm going to jump in with the
29:20guy with the check jamie wing cup first of all mate that was a magnificent effort after all the hoo-ha
29:23going out to come out under pressure in traffic and do the lap he must be pleased with that effort
29:28yeah thank you larko it was um a little bit expensive we used half our tire bank then

30:19to do a lap i didn't even know he was there to be honest let whatever car in i'm a courteous you're
30:23too nice mate courteous driver he definitely gave you a wave apparently that's very decent that's
30:27very nice i feel fantastic oh we we're disappointed by that but anyway hey uh also uh you you weren't
30:33overly happy with your qualifying then you lost a bit of time in that last corner uh on your fastest lap
30:38i made a meal of it at um time gain loss on the steering wheel is great but it's also
30:42can be quite nasty and uh i was on a good lap but definitely for p2 there and um
30:47absolutely made a meal of it so i'm off six i pay the price and long race we'll see how we go
30:52little tip turn that thing off for tomorrow turn that uh lost gain thing off and just get rid of
30:56it mate and concentrate on the job it makes you excited i love looking at the minus until it
31:00goes positive when you make a mistake so good on you i'll learn geez what a difference a few weeks
