00:00All right, Detroit, good morning.
00:02We are proud to have a fellow broadcaster with us,
00:06someone who grew up with us and we watch Grow.
00:10Yes.
00:11Who is a radio professional as we continue to close out now
00:15Women's Month in the month of March.
00:18AP has joined us.
00:20Good morning.
00:21AP!
00:22Good morning.
00:24There you go.
00:25Let me hear her voice.
00:26Let me hear that voice.
00:28Good morning, Mason.
00:29Good morning.
00:30Let me start.
00:31Okay, so we're going to start at the beginning.
00:33What high school did you go to?
00:35I graduated from Murray Wright.
00:37Murray Wright?
00:38Yes.
00:38So we're still open.
00:39It's not.
00:40No, it's closed now.
00:42It's so closed.
00:43How close was it to closing when you graduated?
00:46I think Murray closed in 2006.
00:49I graduated in 01.
00:51Okay.
00:51Did you graduate with Reggie Reg?
00:54No, Reggie's older than me.
00:55He's older.
00:55Yeah, Reggie's older than me.
00:57Well, you guys got a reunion coming up.
00:59I just got details on it.
01:00I'll keep you posted on that.
01:01But yeah, somebody's organizing a Murray Wright class reunion.
01:04Oh, Lord.
01:05I'm not sure if I want to go to that.
01:09You got to go.
01:10You got to go.
01:11I'm not sure if I want to go to that.
01:13So you go to Murray Wright High School and graduate.
01:16What did you do after graduation?
01:18And where was radio in that?
01:20You know what?
01:21I didn't think anything about radio.
01:23Like, I never knew that that was going to be a thing.
01:26Okay.
01:26I knew that I was going to do something that involved speaking.
01:29Really?
01:29Yeah.
01:29I thought I was going to be a lawyer, actually.
01:32Yeah.
01:32Yeah, I thought I was going to be a lawyer.
01:35That's actually what I thought.
01:36So you were young and something.
01:38You told your mom and all of that that you're going to be a lawyer.
01:41I told everybody.
01:42They knew it was going to be something.
01:43I was going to talk.
01:44They knew that.
01:45So you always like to talk.
01:48Always.
01:49I got in trouble every day for talking.
01:54You have brothers and sisters?
01:56I do.
01:57It is eight of us.
01:58Wow.
01:59That's a Christmas fact.
02:00Yeah.
02:01My mom had a clan.
02:02Yeah.
02:03A clan of children.
02:05All right.
02:05So you leave Murray Wright.
02:07What's next?
02:08I leave Murray.
02:09I go to Eastern Michigan.
02:11And then I was like, yeah, I don't know about, you know,
02:16I don't really know what I want to do here.
02:17I said, I want to find something else.
02:20So I looked up Specs Howard.
02:23Oh, you left Eastern all together?
02:24Yeah, I left Eastern.
02:25Yeah, because it was like, I don't know.
02:28I wasn't getting it.
02:29I was just like, yeah, I don't think this is for me.
02:31You know, you get somewhere and you just figure out it's not for you
02:34and then you don't have any time to waste.
02:36I got to move on.
02:37And so I was like.
02:38How long did you stay?
02:39I stayed for two and a half years.
02:41Oh, that's a long time.
02:43Yeah, it was a long time.
02:44Yeah.
02:45And then I left and went to Specs.
02:48But wait a minute.
02:49Let me go back to Eastern.
02:51Go back to Eastern.
02:51You were majoring in what?
02:54I was majoring in business.
02:57Okay.
02:58Yeah, I was majoring in business.
03:00And then I didn't like it.
03:03I feel like this isn't, I think I felt like I was trying to satisfy
03:07the fact that, like, I was one of the first people to go to college.
03:11I was trying to do that thing.
03:12Yeah.
03:13And I was like, yeah, this is not going to work.
03:15Nah, this is not it.
03:17So you, okay.
03:18So then after two and a half years.
03:20Yeah.
03:21You leave Eastern Michigan University and go to a broadcasting school.
03:27Yeah.
03:27And I loved it.
03:27I fell in love with Specs Howard.
03:29I fell in love.
03:32Love.
03:33Tell us about Specs Howard.
03:35Who were some of your favorite instructors?
03:37And what did you learn the most from that experience?
03:41Well, from that experience, I feel like Specs was very hands-on.
03:46You know?
03:46So it was more, I got to get into it.
03:49I'm a hands-on learner.
03:50Like, I can learn, book learn, but you got to throw me out there.
03:54So Specs was very hands-on, and we learned old school radio.
03:58See, a lot of people don't even know what that is.
04:00So, like, we learned how to, like, splice and put together.
04:04Like, I don't even think they even teach that anymore.
04:07No, not because of digital.
04:09Yeah, they don't teach that anymore.
04:11See, I got it when it was good.
04:13So if everything breaks down in the studio, I still know what to do.
04:17You know what a card is?
04:19Yeah, of course.
04:20Get it, girl.
04:20Come on now.
04:21I had to check, I had to check.
04:22I got a splice, Angie.
04:24All right, I got you.
04:26She's not old school radio.
04:27Go ahead.
04:27I got a splice.
04:29Specs, Howard.
04:29Who were some of the instructors you liked a lot?
04:32Oh, my God.
04:34Kernan.
04:35Dick Kernan.
04:35Yep, yep, Kernan.
04:37Keela Carson.
04:39Keela.
04:39Yep, that was one of my favorites.
04:42Sue.
04:43You remember Sue?
04:44Yes.
04:44Oh, man.
04:45I just, my whole experience was amazing.
04:47You just had a good time.
04:48Yeah, I had a good time.
04:49You then leave Specs, Howard to do what?
04:52I leave Specs, Howard and, oh, it's a crazy story.
04:56So I leave Specs, Howard and I'm like, I need to get a job in radio.
05:00And I tried to intern at a station and I got in there and I just wasn't feeling it.
05:06I was like, yeah, no, I need to make me some money.
05:09This internship not going to work.
05:11I need to just make money.
05:12And one of the things that we learned in school was that you're not going to get a job after school.
05:21They flat out told us, like, it's going to take some time.
05:24And I was like, not me.
05:25It's not going to take me no time.
05:27So I went to the radio station and I was like, yeah, I need to work here.
05:33And they were like, yeah, I was like, yeah, I need to work here.
05:36You go to a radio station and you say to them, I need to work here.
05:43Not would you take me as an intern?
05:47No.
05:47Do you mind if I shadow someone?
05:49No.
05:49You say to them who you do not know.
05:52I don't know these people.
05:54I need to work here.
05:56I need to work here.
05:56And what was their reaction?
05:59They were like, who are you?
06:02They were like, who are you?
06:03And, you know, I mean, I'm fresh out of school, so I have zero, zero, zero experience.
06:08So I'm like, I need to work here.
06:10And they were like, okay, well, what can you do?
06:12And I was like, I mean, I'm fresh out of school.
06:13I can pretty much do whatever.
06:15And so they were like, well, we'll see.
06:18And I was like, okay, cool.
06:19So I feel like, okay, I got to keep showing up now, like every single day,
06:23because they not taking me seriously.
06:24So I show up every single day.
06:28Really?
06:29So they didn't say you could be an intern, you could be a kid, you could shadow someone.
06:34You go back.
06:35Every day.
06:36Every day for three months.
06:38And you asked for a certain person?
06:41I asked for a certain person, and they would never let me see him.
06:44And I kept showing up anyway.
06:45I was like a stalker.
06:46Like, if you do that now, you'll probably go to jail.
06:49But back then, it was okay.
06:50Because I was like, I'm coming in here.
06:52How long did you do that?
06:55I did it for three months.
06:56I did it for three months.
06:57I showed up every day in the lobby for three months.
07:01Wow.
07:01Every day.
07:02I got cool with the receptionist.
07:06That was my boy.
07:07So how would you just sit there?
07:08I would just sit there, and he would be like, you serious?
07:11You serious, aren't you?
07:12I was like, very.
07:14Wow.
07:14Yeah.
07:14And then one day, the PD came out, and he was like, listen, come on back here.
07:19Because what's up?
07:21You come here every day.
07:22So the person in charge of hiring and putting you on the radio finally decides enough is enough.
07:30Let me see who this is and comes out.
07:33Yep.
07:34Were you shocked?
07:35I was like, what took you so long?
07:39I'm like, I've been out here for three months.
07:40He was like, no, I've been watching you.
07:42And I've been seeing how consistent you've been.
07:45You haven't been causing any trouble.
07:47You just come in and chill and wait on me.
07:49I said, absolutely.
07:51So he brings you in the office.
07:55You kind of have that conversation.
07:57We do.
07:58What's next?
07:58So we have that conversation.
08:00He was like, okay, you can board up.
08:03And so I'm like, okay, cool.
08:04I'll board up.
08:05For those that are listening, that means you can run the board, but you cannot talk.
08:10I cannot talk.
08:11I can just strictly run the board.
08:13You can make the radio.
08:15You can play the radio, but you cannot talk on the radio.
08:19I cannot talk on the radio.
08:20And I thought that was like the biggest thing ever.
08:22I really did.
08:22I was like, okay, I can just run the board.
08:24That's fine.
08:24But I'm running the board in the most boring station ever.
08:28Now, wait a minute.
08:28They're paying you.
08:29They're paying me though.
08:30So you did accomplish the goal of getting paid.
08:33I did.
08:34And you did get in.
08:35I got in.
08:37Listen, if you take nothing from this, number one, don't stalk now because you will go to jail.
08:43Don't show up at people's place of employment.
08:46But you have to stay consistent.
08:50You have to.
08:51If you want something, no, it's not an option.
08:54And it just wasn't for me.
08:56It's still not.
08:57No, it's like, okay, I'll be back.
08:59That's what I take no ass.
09:01Wow.
09:01Yeah.
09:02So they take you in.
09:04You start working.
09:06You could play the radio to people.
09:09I can't talk.
09:10But you cannot talk.
09:11I cannot say a word.
09:11They say it was a boring station?
09:12Oh, it was so boring.
09:14And we're doing carts.
09:15For Angie.
09:17I'm throwing it.
09:18That's for Angie.
09:19And for the audience that are listening, that's like eight tracks.
09:23Old school eight tracks.
09:24Old school.
09:25Yep.
09:26And the music was on these old school eight tracks.
09:29All right.
09:29So what happens next?
09:31So I'm in the station.
09:34I do that for a while.
09:35And then one day I got my big break.
09:39I got my big break.
09:40So there was a live broadcast and there was no board op.
09:44Ah.
09:44I've never been in, this was at a hip hop station, so I've never been in that station
09:49before.
09:50I didn't know anything about the board at all.
09:52So I get a call that the board op, who was supposed to be running the live broadcast, is
09:57not coming.
09:57Uh-oh.
09:58So I'm like, okay, well, they're like, you know, you have to go in there and start the
10:01live broadcast.
10:02And I'm like, I don't know how to do that.
10:04They was like, well, you have to go in there and figure it out.
10:06So I was like, yeah, it's my time.
10:09It's my time to try.
10:10What is the attitude you get?
10:12Yeah, I was like, it's my.
10:13I'm not like, I'm going to mess up their broadcast.
10:15They're going to be so mad.
10:17No, no.
10:17You didn't do that.
10:18Wait, it gets better.
10:20So I go in there and I completely mess up the live broadcast.
10:25You get a bell for that too.
10:26Where's the bell?
10:27Oh my God, Angie.
10:29What didn't I do?
10:30I had all kinds of stuff going on.
10:31I had commercials going off.
10:33I had all kinds of bells and whistles and everything going on.
10:37I completely bombed the entire live broadcast.
10:41How'd you feel?
10:42I just felt like at least I went in there and tried.
10:46You had no empathy for all the mess ups.
10:50You know what was funny though?
10:51I was so apologetic to the program director.
10:53He was cracking up.
10:55He was like, AP, it's okay.
10:57Like you've proven to me that if I need you, you'll step in.
11:01And that's what I want.
11:02I want a team player.
11:03Like you didn't, you didn't, you know, give me no back talk.
11:07You were just like, okay, I'll go in there and figure it out.
11:09And I did.
11:10I tried to figure it out.
11:11Once I, once I messed up, I figured out what I did wrong.
11:15And then the rest of the broadcast was good.
11:17And that was my first time being on a very large switchboard.
11:21We are winding down women's month in March.
11:25Uh, we decided we would speak to a broadcaster who, who, uh, as a woman had to go through
11:34these things to try to work her way up.
11:37Yeah.
11:38Someone we knew, uh, and she is still a kid to us, but she was always really good.
11:46Aw, thanks.
11:46So we are getting her story.
11:49She is known on the radio as AP.
11:52Mm-hmm.
11:52So now you, you totally destroyed and messed up this broadcast.
11:57Oh, yeah.
11:58You've had your meeting with, with the, they would have had to find me.
12:02I'd be somewhere in a box in a hole.
12:05They had to beg me.
12:06Not you.
12:07You, you, you confronted right away.
12:09Yeah.
12:09What happens next?
12:11So he's like, you know, I got an opportunity, um, for you to be on the air.
12:16And I was like, really?
12:18I'm like, you want me on the air after I done all this?
12:20He's like, yeah, I think, you know, I need to give you a shot.
12:22So I said, cool.
12:24So I said, well, when and what time?
12:27It was at six o'clock in the morning on a Sunday.
12:31Okay.
12:31For one hour.
12:32For one hour?
12:33From six to seven.
12:34Oh, that's your first break.
12:36That's my first radio shift, Sunday, six to seven.
12:41Sunday from six to seven.
12:42Six a.m.
12:42To seven a.m., right.
12:43So tell us about day one.
12:46Day one was really good.
12:48I was so excited and nervous at the same time.
12:51And I just knew that no one would be listening.
12:55So you thought.
12:59It's six o'clock in the morning.
13:00I'm like, nobody is going to be listening to me.
13:03And Sunday.
13:03On a Sunday.
13:04I'm like, nobody's going to be listening to me.
13:05And it was so crazy because the first day that I was on the air, somebody from Murray
13:10Wright, somebody from my high school called in to the station.
13:15Beautiful.
13:16And they were like, April.
13:19And I was like, who's this?
13:20You're listening.
13:21I was so excited.
13:22I was like, somebody's listening.
13:23And she was like, oh, my God.
13:24I'm so proud of you.
13:25I knew that was you.
13:26I just know your voice.
13:27I knew that was you.
13:28I was like, girl, thank you for listening, girl.
13:32Thank you for listening.
13:33So you get through it?
13:35I get through it.
13:36You feel good?
13:37I feel great.
13:38Yeah.
13:39So you now go through a series of Sundays.
13:44What changed?
13:45What changed was the fact that I feel like I kept showing up.
13:51I mean, if I would tell anybody anything, you just have to keep showing up.
13:56And even if it's small, you know, we're not to despise the day of small beginnings.
14:02You know what I'm saying?
14:03Something so small can end up being something so great.
14:08And so I think a lot of times we get discouraged because it's not glamorous.
14:13It's not glamorous.
14:14And anything that you want to do, it's not going to be glamorous all the time.
14:21You just got to keep going and keep showing up.
14:23So that's what I did.
14:25And then my responsibilities grew after that.
14:27So it goes from one hour to two hours to four hours.
14:31It goes to weekend, the whole weekend.
14:33It goes to filling in for every day part.
14:36It goes to hosting all of the clubs in the city.
14:40I was like the only part-timer on the air at that time that had three, four, five club nights.
14:47Come on.
14:48Like every night.
14:49I was partying.
14:51I was hosting everything in the city.
14:53You were known amongst our group.
14:55Come on.
14:56And we love it.
14:58We love it.
14:58Yeah.
14:58As America's party girl.
15:00I hosted everything.
15:02We love that.
15:04I hosted everything.
15:05The radio will always be my first love.
15:10I had the absolute time of my life.
15:13I'm filled with joy right now just even talking about it.
15:17Like I had, I mean, I met you guys.
15:19Like, you know what I mean?
15:20Like I had the best time ever.
15:22It was.
15:23It was the best time of my life.
15:25That's an amazing story.
15:26It was the best time of my life.
15:27That's an amazing story.
15:29So what are you doing today?
15:32Today, I am the host of my own show.
15:35It's called The AP Show.
15:38Look, I get joy seeing that too.
15:40Yes.
15:41Yeah, it's called The AP Show.
15:43It is a, it's an incredible show.
15:46I'm not saying it because it's mine.
15:48It's just a really good show.
15:49It's a feel good show.
15:50You know, it's a show highlighting some of the best and most talented people across this city in the world, period.
16:00I just, I love interviews.
16:02Like, that's my thing.
16:04Y'all know that.
16:04That's my thing.
16:05So I just like highlighting people that are doing amazing things.
16:09It's very, my show is very light.
16:12You know, I don't do the gossip.
16:14I don't do, you know, the hard stuff.
16:17I do the feel good stuff.
16:20Yeah, yeah.
16:21How do we find it?
16:23We find it on IG Live.
16:26It's every other Thursday at 9 o'clock.
16:29A.M. or P.M.?
16:30P.M.
16:30P.M.
16:31A 9 p.m. on IG, right?
16:34Yep, every other Thursday.
16:35Every other Thursday.
16:37How long have you been doing it?
16:38Well, I've been doing my show since 2015.
16:42It was called Ask AP, so it started off a little different.
16:45It started off as an advice column, and I moved from that to my interviews in 2020.
16:52So the situation was, in 2020, I was supposed to go into a studio, and then the pandemic happened.
16:59So, right.
17:00So when the pandemic happened, I was like, well, listen, everybody about to be in the house,
17:05so I have to figure out something to do in here.
17:07And so I was like, hmm, what if I just go live?
17:11Because I never really went live on Instagram before.
17:13So I was like, what if I just start going live?
17:14So I started going live, and then I started to incorporate the interviews,
17:20because I wanted to get back to interviewing.
17:22So I was like, well, maybe I should see who I can get on the show.
17:24And another great thing is the relationships that I made along my journey in radio.
17:30Like, my relationships are everything.
17:32And I have relationships with some of the greatest people that I can pick up my phone
17:36and call them and say, hey, I need you on my show.
17:39And it's a no-brainer.
17:40They just come right on.
17:41And so I started interviewing everybody.
17:44And so the show just kind of pretty much, like, took off.
17:47It just is doing what it's supposed to do.
17:50And I'm grateful.
17:51I'm so grateful.
17:52One more time.
17:53Tell people how they can find it.
17:54So I am on Instagram.
17:56It's called The AP Show.
17:57The show is every other Thursday at 9 p.m.
18:01So where are we with Thursdays?
18:02What about this Thursday?
18:04This Thursday, we're off.
18:05So next Thursday, we'll be on.
18:07Yep.
18:07Wow.
18:079 p.m.?
18:08Yep.
18:09Wow.
18:10The AP Show.
18:12I came a long way, y'all.
18:13That is cool.
18:14Yes.
18:15So you enjoy your broadcast?
18:18I absolutely do.
18:19I think I was made for this, for what I'm doing now.
18:24But I don't think I would be able to do what I do now if it hadn't been for being on the radio.
18:29Yeah.
18:29This is where it started.
18:31So that's why when I walked in here, my heart was just so, I was like, ah.
18:35This is, I felt the magic when I walked in, for sure.
18:39You can hear it in your voice.
18:41Yeah.
18:41I love, this was, I'm telling you, radio, I wouldn't change anything.
18:46I wouldn't change a thing.
18:48This is where it started.
18:50Your Angie star would not stop talking about you at all.
18:54I love Angie.
18:56Angie has always been Team AP.
19:00Period.
19:00Angie has always been Team AP.
19:03Yes.
19:03Angie, from the moment I met Angie, Angie has always been Team AP.
19:08You see when I came here how we clowned.
19:11Yeah.
19:11Yeah.
19:11Angie has always been Team AP, for sure.
19:14Yes.
19:15But you know what I've always respected?
19:16Like she says, her tenacity.
19:19She always was on point.
19:22But then you always work with excellence.
19:24And you take things to 110.
19:26I do.
19:26You don't just half do things.
19:28You really do things.
19:29So I always saw success for you.
19:31Oh, Angie.
19:32Thanks so much.
19:32Yeah.
19:32You are the real deal.
19:34Thank you so much, Angie.
19:35There's a lot of people in radio, but you're the real deal.
19:39Thank you so much.
19:39I really appreciate that.
19:41You have the gift inside of you.
19:43Yes.
19:43You can hear it.
19:44Yeah.
19:44I've got some young people aspiring to do what you've been able to do.
19:49Advice for them.
19:51Ooh.
19:52Keep going.
19:53You got to start.
19:54I think a lot of times people think they don't have what they need to have to start.
20:00You do.
20:01You just got to start.
20:02You know what I mean?
20:03With whatever you have.
20:04Because along the way, you'll get everything that you need along the way.
20:09You know what I'm saying?
20:10You'll meet great people.
20:11Build relationships.
20:12That is one thing that I'll tell everybody to do.
20:15You have to have good relationships with people because that is this business.
20:19It's all about relationships.
20:21Money will come.
20:22All of that good stuff will come.
20:24But you have to build those relationships because this is a relationship.
20:28You know what I mean?
20:29Like me being able to be on Mason and Star.
20:32This is a relationship.
20:36You know, if I didn't have this relationship, there's no way we could sit down here and talk.
20:41And so I would say that to anybody.
20:43Build your relationships.
20:44That's the most important thing in anything you do.
20:46You got to connect with people.
20:49You know, you can't do everything by yourself.
20:51Networking is a real thing.
20:53Get out here.
20:53Put yourself out here.
20:55Get in those rooms.
20:56You know, sometimes it's going to be a little bit uncomfortable, but you got to get out there.
21:00You have to.
21:01And I heard you say one thing that I just kind of want you to reiterate on.
21:05No.
21:06If somebody tells you no, what do you do?
21:08I don't know what that means.
21:14What a great answer.
21:15I don't know what that means.
21:16I don't know, Angie.
21:17I don't know what no means.
21:19Come on.
21:19I mean, I'm just being honest.
21:21Like, I don't know what it means.
21:22I never knew what it meant as a kid.
21:24And I don't know what it means as an adult.
21:27No.
21:27What do you mean no?
21:28Like.
21:29There's a way.
21:30There is a way to do everything.
21:32There is a way to do everything.
21:34Like, I don't know.
21:36It's just like, okay, well, maybe not right now.
21:37I'll be back, though.
21:38I love that.
21:39You know what I'm saying?
21:39I just take it as a, okay, they don't get it now.
21:41That's okay.
21:42That's cool.
21:42I'll be back.
21:43You know, I don't take no for an answer.
21:45Never have.
21:46It has been a great privilege to have you on.
21:49No, it is a privilege for me to be on your show.
21:53I don't think we've ever put a broadcaster on.
21:55Really?
21:56Outside of our pizza boys, Lieutenant Dre.
22:02Yeah, and BJ.
22:03And BJ.
22:04Oh, yeah.
22:05See, you guys, I'm telling you, you guys are the next.
22:08You guys.
22:09Yes.
22:09You don't know.
22:10Period.
22:11If we owned something, man.
22:13Yes.
22:14The talent you guys brought, because.
22:17That was a time.
22:18Wasn't it?
22:18We used to listen to you guys.
22:20Yeah, I know.
22:21Like you listened to us.
22:22Yeah.
22:22Which was funny, and I'd, what's it called, troll?
22:26I would troll BJ.
22:28BJ is incredible.
22:29I'd be telling him everything he said, when he laughed, when he coughed, you know.
22:34BJ.
22:35BJ is incredible.
22:36So are you, and we were so glad to get the call, and we couldn't wait to get you on.
22:43I was happy.
22:44I was like, I'm going to be on Mason and Star.
22:47We're all one.
22:48Yes.
22:48And always have been.
