00:00all dark and cunning they call him the rat but Ford's pint-sized powerhouse is not swallowing
00:13the general's bait in season 2000 Kiwi Paul Radisic is Holden's biggest pest
00:19three weeks ago the rat plague brought Eastern Creek fans to their feet Radisic won his first
00:29Chell series race under extreme pressure round four had surprises galore three winners from
00:42three heats Russell Ingalls first race victory of the season and Craig Lowndes staking his claim as
00:48Holden's new enforcer victory of the creek moves Mark Scaife to the top of the points as we welcome
01:07you to the top of Australia for round five of the shell championship series at Darwin's Hidden Valley
01:14Raceway exclusive to your Logie award-winning home of motorsport Network 10
01:44magnificent weather conditions here at the top end and although it's only the third time the V8
01:52supercar circus has traveled here to Hidden Valley once again the people of Darwin have absolutely
01:58embraced this event there's a huge crowd making its way into the circuit hello everyone I'm Greg Rust
02:02this is round five of the shell championship series and it's been a busy couple of weeks since the
02:07previous round of Eastern Creek I can tell you that Network 10 was fortunate enough to win a Logie very
02:12recently and we certainly couldn't have done that without you the viewers at home and the support
02:16of the motorsport fans the support of the drivers our huge hard-working behind the scenes team and of
02:21course the officials of ESCO IMG and cams take a look at the point score for you after four rounds and
02:26on top Mark Scaife on 480 points foreign behind him is Garth Tander Paul Radisic the first of the four
02:32drivers on 395 defending champion Craig Lowndes currently lies fifth in the series and Russell
02:38Ingall the enforcer sixth Russell Ingall of course I can tell you had a great run here over the previous
02:43two years he won the inaugural round here and took two race victories last season but Barry Sheen he's
02:47not too well today well he's not he's got some kind of flu bug and the temperature is sort of 30 32 degrees
02:53and the last thing you want is the flu you know if you look at him all around his eyes are all red and
02:58that and this morning I had breakfast with Larry Perkins and Larry's really pleased because he's got it
03:03there but this place the first time I've ever been here you ever get a chance you've got to come up here it's
03:08totally amazing you see crocodiles of barramundi fishing and it is the hospitality is unparalleled you know you from the
03:15time you come in the circuit everybody treats you fantastically well and it's my first time up here and
03:21it's definitely not my last I'd like Barry Sheen to have a good time let's take a look at them and how they finished after
03:26qualifying for you now the top ten and it was brilliant the top eight drivers going underneath the existing qualifying lap record set by
03:33Glenn Seaton here last season it's an all HRT front row John Bauer good effort from him that's his best of the
03:38season a good effort also from Mark Larkham Paul Radisic seventh Longhurst and Murphy round out the top
03:43ten should also say a big congratulations to Paul Wheel and Brad Jones 14th and 15th respectively in the lead
03:49up to this round officials imposed a change to the Commodore bodywork they were told to trim 100 mil off the
03:54undertrade in a bid to even up the competition between Holden and Ford and as Mark Osler explains it's all going to
04:00plan there's been a lot of talk lately about a performance disparity between the Ford and the
04:05Holden V8 supercars the argument being the Holden's maybe a little bit too fast for the Falcon the
04:09officials have acted and they've slowed the Commodores down and this is how they've done it
04:12this is the front spoiler section of the latest VT Commodore I'll show you what it looks like
04:16underneath what they call the undertrade but in fact it's more like an aircraft wing only upside down
04:24that is instead of providing lift it provides negative lift or downforce the air flying under the car
04:29goes across this wing surface here and actually creates like a vacuum that sucks the front of
04:33the car down to the ground to improve the front tyre grip and what they've done the rule makers have
04:38taken 100 millimetres out of the length of this wing you can see the cut line there quite obviously
04:42what that does is reduce the wing surface area which reduces the downforce and therefore the grip
04:47on the front tyres has it worked have they taken too much or too little only today's racing will tell
04:52yeah you're quite right there's been a lot of controversy about those changes most of the teams electing
04:57not to get the grinder out and trim that 100 mil off until they actually got here to Darwin
05:01also to Ford boss Jeff Polardes has been pretty public about his criticism of the way the officials
05:06have handled this whole process Holden will actually get that 100 mil back in time for Mathis and the
05:12Ford camp are none too pleased about it we'll talk more about that during the course of today's
05:15telecast the circuit here at Hidden Valley is a view 10 corners and of course it's characterized by
05:20that drag strip the one kilometre long main straight but to show for you around and give
05:25you a flying lap here's Neil Crompton in the Ford Falcon
05:27welcome aboard the world's fastest sauna here at Hidden Valley the XRI is an absolute steam bath today as
05:39we head down towards turn one at Hidden Valley 2.85 kilometres 10 corners on this track turn one is
05:49a 180 degree left-hander out of there in second third gear fourth then fifth up through these high-speed
05:58S's 210 k's hard on the picks turn four out of there second gear up to third back to second for the hairpin
06:12turn five this is only 60 k's the slowest corner on the circuit up to third gear now turn six is a little
06:22tricky kind of an opening radius the car tends to want to oversteer a bit on the exit a bit of a bump
06:28going up towards seven really complex part of the track here we make the run towards the final corner
06:37through the S's you've got to really look after the right hand rear tire here because you can imagine
06:41the heat and the constant turning left really gives the car some difficulty flat out all the way down the
06:47straight top gear 260 kilometres an hour that's a hot lap at Hidden Valley
06:53the top end really is a marvellous place and we're revving up for all the action from race one
07:00that's coming your way right after the break
07:02Russell really looking for way past
07:24the highs and lows for jason bright here at the top end
07:30it nearly turned over it was see how high it was up in the air
07:33it's pretty happy if you've ever seen someone so happy that coming second
07:37Russell engel the enforcer he's back in action
07:41kept his nose clean in that melee in the first corner and now he's doing donuts
07:45well this is a major turning point for forward
07:49the highs and lows for jason bright here at the top end and for russell engel
07:54will this be his day again a hit out at Hidden Valley folks
07:5835 v8 supercars set to do battle in the first of three sprint races
08:02craig lowndes and markscape on the front row
08:05john bow with a little bit of problems which we'll talk more about shortly in the catafilla fort
08:09alongside glenn seaton larkham tander paul radisich and russell engel on row four
08:13tony longhurst and greg murphy start out of row five john faulkner and neil crompton out of row six
08:18craig baird and paul wheel good effort that 14th brad jones his strongest qualifying performance so far
08:24in the aussie male falcon further back stephen richards and larry perkins row nine ellery and
08:29cameron mcclain 10 mcdoniher and mark pool out of 21 and 22 23 and 24 is doogle mcdougal and
08:36cameron mcconville out of row 13 is steve reed and paul morris in the big commodore rodney forbes
08:41and stephen johnson steve's having all sorts of dramas we set up this weekend he's right back in the queue
08:45anthony trap trevor ashby paul romano and peter doorman and we've got word that larry perkins is
08:52having some sort of drama with the castrol commodore can't start the car well they just made an engine
08:58change just before the start of this race he had a pretty high mileage oh there he is got it going
09:02yep how quick did they change that engine mark mark and i watched you it's like quite incredible
09:0835 minutes incredible engine had something like three and a half thousand racing k's on it and
09:13they had apparently some sort of failure inside they changed the engine i think it was in the
09:16space of about 45 minutes quite incredible unreal we've really got this uh engine changing very
09:22quick and v8 supercars now work our way through the in-car cameras that you'll be looking at today
09:27brad jones in the aussie mail internet racing machine cuv in-car camera bring you all the drama
09:34and excitement coming aboard that ford and bradley as i said before having his strongest qualifying
09:40performance this weekend so the jones team really getting their act together in v8 supercar
09:46for one ford to another the ford in-car with clinton seaton fourth he'll start today the man who up until
09:52yesterday held the qualifying lap record here but that was smashed by no less than eight drivers
09:57the enforcer russell ingle walker in-car camera he got held up on his uh on his fast lap yesterday
10:04and he's sure the car can go quicker than his qualifying performance would represent so
10:09we could see some fireworks from ingle in the northern territory today we saw out the front of
10:13ingle's commodore this man the rat paul radicich the shell helix in car aboard the dick johnson racing
10:19falpin he will start in grid position seven for the first of today's races and mitre 10 forward
10:25the mitre 10 in-car camera strong qualifying performance from mark larkham fifth on the grid
10:30showing a lot of speed larkham could be one to watch this afternoon as the cars take the grid there's
10:36radicich behind radicich too not really happy with the setup on the car he can't quite get the
10:41cornering balance the way he wants it we just have to watch jb with uh he's apparently lost one
10:47cylinder so uh just keep your eye on him because uh it's going to hold uh larkham up radicich and
10:53uh longhurst so um he was certainly shaking his head before their barrier they had the
10:57bonded up for quite a while while they were sitting on the grid and it doesn't sound like they've been
11:02able to cure that problem whatever it is so a big disappointment for the caterpillar forward
11:06it's quite the 100 millimeter reduction in front under tray for the commodores that front row of the
11:11grid has a very familiar look to it two red commodores i reckon they should stick some lead in there
11:17as we get set for battle holden versus ford here at hidden valley a hold in front row two fords on
11:24road two 35 cars and 18 laps we are away lounge and scape the drag race for turn one bow gets a good
11:32start which is quite a surprise the field stream down towards turn one mark scape has taken the
11:37launch look at this the jostling for position between ingle and larkham and bow bow has dropped
11:42right back yeah john bow is very careful in this opening lap when they're fighting for position if
11:47he is running on seven cylinders he's going to have a obvious power of disadvantage i'm sure the
11:51crew have been able to fix it we'll have to watch his progress as the race continues that's paul
11:55morris they're out in the gate yeah it doesn't look like jb's car is going too bad at the moment
12:00well hopefully they've been able to cure that misfire that's a rotten time to drop onto seven
12:04cylinders oh we've got a spin in the background they're one of the kmart cars that is stephen
12:08richards who's gone around that's on the lead up to the terrace hairpin where we are now you can see
12:12bow on the exit there little tentative russell ingle looking for a move down the inside does he get it
12:17oh no yeah it looks if jb's car is still off on one cylinder because he's definitely holding ingle up
12:24there and a big field sweep around through the s's down toward the corner onto the main straight for
12:31the first of 18 laps and there's big problems now i wonder if that's the result of that moment
12:39well that's right for the kiwi he's been involved oh larry going backwards he's got it reversed to
12:49try to get out of there now that's garth tander is that garth tander we saw a moment ago there
12:53been a big crash big coming together on that opening lap but yeah it must have been the first
12:59corner right and get a look here he's coming up into the valley oh look somebody down inside there
13:06oh that's uh stephen richards stephen richards well it looks like who's that that's bagwana and oh
13:13boy everybody look at this lot well the kmart car was just flying across the grass i don't know what
13:19went on there it's just that's how radisic got tangled up in there as well boy that was a real
13:24coming together that's bagwana yeah oh look at this and larry uh smoking them he's just not having
13:30good good championship series is he no no it's all engine change after the warm-up this morning
13:36there's the kmart car stephen richards came flying across the grass there coming into the
13:40right hand and it brings the field up into the valley but he's done some serious damage to the
13:44front of that car yeah i couldn't make out why what's what was going on there unless he ran white
13:50got on the grass and just couldn't uh stop it the car was certainly carrying some speed and talk of
13:54speed the holden racing team despite that 100 mil penalty that all the holdens have copped this
14:00round off the front under trey holdens running one and two scape leading from lounges glenn seaton
14:05the first of the four drivers sitting in third you can see there john bow the caterpillar forward
14:09slipping back through the field poor wheel what about that he's up to 10th place and doing very well
14:14this is how larry came together who's that caram mclean is it well it looks like yes it is oh that was
14:20uh trying to run up the inside get a look at this going backwards so there's been all sorts of
14:26incidents here oh look at this wow oh that's where radisic got tagged that was the collision with
14:33morris well that was a major very difficult to tell from that shot really steven's car was certainly
14:41carrying some speed when he arrived at that corner and he's off on the grass there's larry back into the
14:46pits yeah oh that's craig baird so boy there's a lot of carnage early on the kiwi having some real
14:56dramas as the field battle on steven ellery there we can see cameron mclean and brad jones
15:01is doing quite well in the aussie male falcon jones at the moment sits in 14th so the order at the
15:08moment scape in command from craig lounge seaton in third garf tander in fourth larkham in fifth
15:15and they go back to engel murphy longhurst wheel up to ninth and jog bow in tenth so wheel's doing an
15:22outstanding job in the k and j thermal machine that's great he qualified so well didn't he that's
15:27so he's a great little driver our viewers watching through tv new zealand not a huge amount to cheer
15:33about at this stage when you consider that paul radisic was involved in that altercation craig baird's just
15:37fun best of them at the moment greg murphy seventh place in the kmart commodore here from the pit
15:42stephen richards has retired from this race that damage considered too severe so another bad day for
15:47the kmart castrol team which will go to the back of the grid if he can make the start for heat too
15:52at the moment seat in this battle for third position with tander larkham engel just behind
15:59and a bit of a gap back to murphy longhurst wheel john bowe hanging on in tenth position and mark
16:05pull good performance in the john deere commodore he's just outside the top 10 11th position
16:10just look at larkham oh it's going to be a long way around now
16:13amazing as they pull on the front straight here at hidden valley at the moment mark scaife the
16:18quickest of them 257.5 kilometers an hour through our speed trap oh look at this larkham oh i can
16:27hear some tire screeching somewhere oh yes oh it's longhurst and who's at that smurf is it always hold
16:32your breath when you hear those tires you don't know what you're going to pick up when the camera
16:36pans around fortunately not too much damage there apparently we hear from the pits that radisic
16:41had clutch problems off the start that's why he dropped right back into the field and unfortunately
16:46got caught up in all that carnage up here what a rotten weekend it has been so far for that team
16:52the dick johnson racing outfit radisic is out with those problems we were talking about before and
16:56steven johnson well down the order 16. you look at uh seaton's car seems to really put the power down
17:03good out of uh out of the slower quarters because he's pulling quite a lot in tandem
17:07ingle's doing some good lap times here he's just on a 10989 that's why he's closing in on the back
17:12of this battle now he's got to find his way through this is in car with radisic now let's get a load of
17:18this he collides with uh paul morris oh no that's uh one up the backside that was morris
17:29oh dear me yeah so all sorts of carnage going on in that group coming through that corner
17:34a lot of cars damaged in the process but out the front positions remain the same escape and lounge
17:41seaton tander larkham engle murphy lomhurst wheels for the ninth fortner in 10th and cameron mcgonwell
17:49great performance he's up to 11.
17:59right there look at this look
18:01yeah it's a real great train here we were riding there a moment ago with glenn seaton
18:06this is the battle for third tander in behind him larkham doing a terrific job and there's russell
18:10the enforcer the man who finished first in the third race at eastern creek this has been a happy
18:17hunting ground for him in the past
18:18olden racing team still in command
18:23they've been very fast throughout practice and qualifying
18:28the forwards though trying to track them down
18:32doesn't look like that
18:34sport of modifications has had any effect on their speed at the moment
18:37actually stretching a little bit of a gap there 1.27 seconds the gap from lounge back to seat
18:44is under fire from garth tander at the valvoline machine
18:46larkham in fifth place for this battle remaining static ingle though
18:50stuck in behind them
18:51it's going to be very very hard to overtake around this layout
18:54as they come up toward the valley section once again hard on the brakes
18:59swing hard right
19:01glenn seaton good strong performance
19:03the 35 year old originally from sydney now placed himself for many years down in melbourne
19:09and leading the forward attack at hidden valley this afternoon
19:12biggest mover on the circuit at the moment has got to be stephen johnson
19:16started 28th in this race and now sits 14th
19:20he said he was going to be on a charge
19:23he would have been helped i guess by
19:25treading his way through that carnage on the opening lap
19:28he did well as we saw in that in-car shot before to avoid his team mate paul radisic
19:32have we lost with paul will
19:34apparently we hear
19:40oh look at this lot
19:42oh dear me
19:43there's damage to the front of paul's car
19:46my boss wheel there
19:47oh my
19:48camera mcconville taking evasive action
19:50and look as though it's romano's car
19:51romano yeah definitely
19:52oh that's romano's
19:55oh dear me
19:56spoiler pegged in the front of the car
19:59that shows
20:00you have to laugh
20:02i mean
20:03if the officials ever wanted any evidence
20:05that's very dangerous
20:06they need to stop that
20:07that's really
20:08it's the sort of thing you don't really want to carry around with you
20:12not really the best aerodynamic assistance
20:14no
20:14so pulled into the pits
20:17oh boy
20:19well what a race this first one has turned out to be here at hidden valley
20:24plenty of action
20:25take a closer look at just what happened there
20:29get a load here right
20:30it looks like um
20:32paul will's touched romano up the backside
20:35the looks of it
20:36and then
20:36that's quick detachable spoiler there
20:40well neil crompton
20:42mcconville
20:43trevor ashby and steve breed
20:45all taking
20:46good evasive action
20:48let's have another look
20:49yeah i'm trying to get
20:50yeah it does it looks as if
20:53um paul will just tapped the back of romano
20:55look at the chain reaction this sets off
20:57oh look at crompton
20:59that was a bit of houdini
21:00kevin mcconville just sneaking through
21:04nick donahue
21:05yep and the repaired
21:06tdk
21:07ultratune machine
21:09so unfortunately we hear paul wheel is out of the race after
21:12a great opening stint up in the top ten
21:14now it looks as though glenn seaton is gradually reeling in the holden racing team
21:18the gap has
21:18narrowed or so it would seem
21:20and staying in tow with seaton is tander
21:23larkham and ingle
21:24so this is going to be a real dogfight towards the finish of this one lap 9 of 18
21:28it's going to be interesting to see um
21:30who's using their tyres the best
21:32when i say who's using their tyres the best
21:34so whose car is uh the most sort of
21:36conservative on tyre wear
21:38last lap around
21:39mark scaife a 111.05
21:41and
21:42it's quite a significant uh
21:44quite a lot slower than his teammate craig lounge
21:47who did a 110.92
21:48so scaife may be struggling
21:51well sitting against a bit of a queue building up behind him
21:54that crucial gap between the back of lounge car
21:57and seaton
21:58that's the one you've got to watch
22:00seaton is chomping away
22:01that he's closed it over the last couple of laps
22:03check them out for you as they stand at the moment
22:05scaife and lounge lead the way from seaton tander
22:08mark larkham in fifth place
22:10that's a good effort from him
22:11russell ingle in sixth
22:12greg murphy sits in seventh
22:13in the kmart commodore
22:14and tony longhurst
22:15in eighth position
22:16can the holden racing team
22:18hold off the charge
22:19from seaton and co
22:20who sit in third and fourth
22:21nice to have you with us
22:28here at hidden valley
22:30as we continue
22:31race one
22:32of round five
22:33of the shell championship series
22:34holden racing team
22:35one and two on the road at the moment
22:37your leader
22:37mark scaife
22:38from craig lounge
22:39seaton holding off a determined
22:41garth tander
22:41larkham's there as well
22:42look at all of them
22:43trying to pull out of the slipstream
22:44lounge
22:45it's an amazing corner
22:47turn one here at hidden valley
22:49if you've not seen that before
22:50it's almost possible to have them
22:52five wide on this front straight
22:53and then it funnels down into turn one
22:55it's very difficult to get more than one or two cars
22:57wide through there
22:58it does look as if craig is
23:00he's after scathing
23:02doesn't it
23:02now it's all over the back
23:03yeah he's got to get some championship points back too
23:06now reigning champion
23:07he's back in fifth of points at the moment
23:09319 as opposed to the 480 of his team mate
23:13so it's important for lounge to
23:15keep finishing ahead
23:16of his main competition for the championship
23:19right now he's boxed in behind his team mate
23:21seaton's still in
23:22third position
23:23tander larkham
23:24ingle back there in sixth
23:25and a bit of a gap back to murphy longhurst
23:28ellery
23:29in the super cheap autos falcon
23:30that's a good effort from the queenslander
23:32he's up in the top ten now
23:33and john faulkner rounds out the ten
23:35talk about ingle there a moment ago mark
23:37he's hit sixth in the championship as well
23:38so the enforcer
23:40desperate for points
23:41it's going to be interesting to watch the performance of the cars
23:45over these three 20 minute races
23:47and whether this adjustment to the front of the commodores
23:49has an effect on their tyre wear
23:51i know the teams were saying that they were taking a little bit of rear wing off
23:56that is reducing the amount of downforce on the back to try and balance the car out
23:59after they lost a little bit of grip at the front
24:01whether it has an effect on the tyres over the race distance only time will tell
24:04but they're looking pretty close at the moment
24:07seaton giving them plenty of heat in the ftr falcon
24:10i tell you it's so longhurst is going quick
24:15longhurst is casual
24:16to give you an idea folks
24:18currently here at hidden valley around 30 degrees
24:21but the on track temperature is about 39
24:23so you can imagine just how hot it is
24:25when you add the heat from the cars inside the cabin
24:29it is torturous on these drivers
24:30and that shot a moment ago we saw with glenn seaton
24:32really doing it tough here at hidden valley in these hot warm conditions
24:37look at this
24:40this is donnaher and cameron mcconville in the autopro commodore
24:44nicely spun around
24:46did cameron keep it off the
24:48the guardrail there
24:50looks as though he's done a complete 360
24:52whoa
24:53yes
24:56oh spoilers
24:57well not the day the 26 year old from victoria
25:02would have liked
25:02they had been making inroads with that autopro commodore
25:05just watching this gap between uh seaton and the hrt goa in front
25:09it's that he's brought under a second but it's hovering around about seven or eight tenths of a second
25:13so that position not really changing
25:15he's sort of boxed in
25:16six laps remaining
25:18hope you get applause for all the latest
25:21from the shell championship series
25:23why not check out v8 supercar.com.au
25:26that is the official v8 supercar website
25:28it's got a terrific array of information
25:30and a lot of links to the teams for example
25:33information, race results, championship points, the whole lot
25:36and while you're on the net check out the ten websites
25:38oh
25:39gee there's a collision or something back there
25:42yeah I collapsed
25:42saw Ingle was very close to the back of Larcombe's car
25:45they were just bumper to bumper the three of them coming out of that turn
25:48there was a big puff of smoke
25:49and they've lost a lot of track position to seaton
25:52so something happened back there
25:54Larcombe under extreme pressure from Russell Ingle
25:56Ingle now sixth in the championship
25:59desperately hunting for points
26:00this is a place where we'll probably do it
26:03always strong at Hidden Valley
26:04it's not the easiest place to get past though really is it
26:07I mean it's the end of the day
26:09you can uh
26:10if you position yourself right in the straight
26:12there's no way that you can get past at the end of it
26:15whatever happened there that helped Garf Tander
26:17as well as we've got five to go folks
26:19in race one here at Hidden Valley
26:21I'm going to have a close look at
26:23see what happened here
26:24right
26:25oh
26:27I think no touches
26:29it's I don't know
26:30something got
26:31oh I think Larcombe
26:32Larcombe may have touched the back of Tampa's car
26:35but we couldn't
26:36a concertina effect I think
26:38well yeah but
26:38I don't understand a smoke
26:40there we go
26:41now what happens here
26:41yeah it just touches the back of
26:43oh sorry
26:43yeah
26:44yeah there yes
26:45a sandwich
26:46yeah well that was really
26:48not really anybody's fault
26:50it's one of those things
26:51when everybody's so close
26:52you can't help it
26:52the end result is
26:53they lost a bit of track position
26:54they managed to claw it up pretty effectively
26:56Seaton's still in third
26:58not being able to do anything about the
27:00Red Barons in front of him
27:02fastest lap so far
27:03Russell Engel
27:03at 1-0-9
27:048-9 on lap 4
27:05that got him up
27:05onto the bundle of the Mitre 10 car
27:07but he hasn't been able to make any
27:08further progress since then
27:10now look at this
27:11Tony Longhurst
27:12he's starting to close the gap as well
27:13in the Caltech's Javelin Falcon
27:15Greg Murphy
27:16yeah I noticed Longhurst was coming up before
27:19he caught up a hell of a lot
27:21really very quickly
27:22so across the strike this time
27:254 to go
27:27Lowndes tucked in behind
27:29team mate Mark Scaife
27:30the championship leader
27:31he leads by 4 points
27:33from this guy here
27:33Garth Tander
27:34in the Valvoline Cummins Commodore
27:36oh yeah
27:37look at the back of Garth's car
27:38there's smoke coming out there
27:40I've been watching that smoke
27:40come out the last couple of laps
27:41I'm not sure whether it was
27:42mechanical
27:44it looks like it's stopped there
27:45not quite sure what's going on
27:46with Garth's car
27:47doesn't seem to be slowing him down
27:48at the moment
27:48possibly a tyre rubbing on a guard mark
27:50I don't think so
27:51because it's coming out the centre
27:52and it seems on overrun
27:53it comes out
27:54Tony Longhurst
27:55the 42 year old gold coaster
27:57having an increasingly competitive run
27:59in the Shell Championship Series
28:00this year
28:01I was talking to one of the engineers
28:03on the Stone Brothers Racing Team
28:05Campbell Little
28:05and he's saying
28:05it's been so difficult for Tony
28:08because most of his racing career
28:09he really hasn't
28:10worked in the high tech
28:11part of this team
28:12in terms of working with telemetry
28:14very much a suit of the pants
28:15yeah very much a suit of the pants driver
28:17now he's having to discipline himself
28:18smooth out his driving use
28:19all that data acquisition
28:21to his advantage
28:21and you can see that
28:23as he becomes more and more
28:24to terms with the high technology
28:25he's getting better and better results
28:27Lowndes
28:28still there
28:30but not close enough
28:31to get past his team mate
28:32three to go
28:33in race one
28:35at Hidden Valley
28:35Scaife continues
28:37to lead the way
28:38for the Holden Racing Team
28:39first of the forwards
28:40sitting in third
28:40is Glenn Seaton
28:41and it's Tander
28:42Larkham, Engel
28:43Tony Longhurst
28:44seventh
28:45Murphy eighth
28:46Stephen Ellery ninth
28:47that's a great drive
28:48and Faulkner completes your ten
28:49there's not really anywhere here
28:50where you can get really
28:52right up someone's backside
28:53and sort of nip it up the inside
28:55it's really
28:55it's that nature circuit
28:57that there really isn't
28:58anywhere you can stuff it up
28:59you look at the history of HRT here
29:01look at the back
29:02that is
29:02looks like oil
29:03yeah it does look like oil
29:04because if you see
29:05watch when he backs the thing off
29:07now when he gets on it
29:08do you see
29:09when he gets on it again
29:10it's
29:11it could maybe
29:12come in from a diff
29:13or something like that
29:14word from the pits is
29:18the team say
29:19there's nothing
29:19mechanically wrong
29:20with this car
29:21so Garth is pressing on
29:22and it pays
29:23his last lap
29:24a 110.6
29:25and through the speed trap
29:26253.7
29:28kilometres an hour
29:29so the Valvoline Cummins
29:30Commodore
29:31not slowing at all
29:31and he's still in touch
29:32with Glenn Seaton
29:33you can see there
29:34oh no this looks like
29:34oil smoke or something
29:35yeah it definitely is
29:36oil smoke
29:36because as he backs it off
29:38on overrun
29:38it sort of loads it up
29:39with oil
29:40wherever it's coming from
29:41and as he gets on it
29:42like an oil surge
29:43yeah
29:43two laps remaining
29:45for our race leader
29:46Mark Scaife
29:47Craig Lowndes still in second
29:48Seaton in third
29:49Tander fourth
29:50Larkham Ingle
29:50Longhurst Murphy
29:51Ellery Faulkner
29:52that's top ten
29:53staying fairly static
29:54and when you look at
29:56HRT's record
29:56at the Hidden Valley
29:57it's always been a bit
29:58of a bogey circuit
29:59for them
29:59well they've cured that
30:00this year
30:00very fast
30:02through our
30:02practice and qualifying
30:04and leading heat one
30:05Larkham are saying
30:07that he's suddenly
30:08got the car sorted out
30:09when they changed
30:10the construction
30:10of the tyres
30:11it really affected
30:12their car badly
30:14and it's just here
30:15in the last
30:15sort of
30:16this weekend
30:17you know
30:18we just
30:18said we've got
30:20the thing right
30:20you know
30:21it's a different car
30:22to drive
30:22smoke continues
30:23to come out
30:24the back of
30:25Tander's car
30:25there
30:25we saw through
30:26the terrace
30:26there it is again
30:27tough
30:28word is that
30:29Gary Rogers
30:29team boss
30:30for the
30:30Valvoline Cummins team
30:32shrugging his shoulders
30:33not quite sure
30:34what's going on
30:34I don't think it's
30:35anything drastic
30:36it's just it looks
30:36like an oil leak
30:37and you don't need
30:38an awful lot of
30:39oil to leak
30:40to make it
30:41smoke like that
30:41look at how close
30:42Lowndes is now
30:43they will get the
30:44last lap board
30:45this time around
30:46as they come over
30:47the start finish line
30:48at Hidden Valley
30:49still not close enough
30:50though to make a move
30:51he tries pulling out
30:52of the slipstream
30:52but there a graphic
30:53shot of how far back
30:54he is
30:54tell you what
30:55Scaife is going
30:56it's quicker
30:57than Lowndes
30:57is down the street
30:58Tander looking
30:59for a different line
31:00to Seaton Seaton
31:01plays defensive
31:02into turn one
31:03we are on our way
31:04home
31:05Holden Racing
31:06leading the way
31:07Scaife and Lowndes
31:08you're right now
31:09with Glenn Seaton
31:10who sits in third place
31:11and looking back
31:12at Garth Tander
31:12in fourth
31:13Larcombe
31:14a tremendous performance
31:15in fifth
31:15and Russell Ingle
31:16being in fourth
31:17or sixth
31:17I can't see
31:19the positions changing
31:20because unless
31:21you really want to
31:22take a massive chance
31:23there really isn't
31:24anywhere to get through
31:25Scaife is pretty good
31:29at making it wide
31:29oh look
31:31oh what's that
31:33that's coming out
31:34of the front
31:35it's obviously coming
31:37out of the motor
31:37somewhere
31:38or oil tank
31:39or something
31:40at the front
31:40and um
31:42well we'll find out
31:43during the break
31:44what happened to
31:44Garth Tander's car
31:46they've done a good job
31:46Gary Rogers Motorsport
31:48team knocking this car
31:49into shape
31:49Garth was in
31:49all sorts of trouble
31:50early in practice
31:51but it couldn't
31:52get the power down
31:53and now the car
31:54seems to be working
31:55much better
31:55yeah they changed
31:56the springs on the front
31:57it's made it
31:58massively different
31:59they work onto the
31:59front straight
32:00for the final time
32:01and they will get
32:01the chequered flower
32:02in race one
32:03and it's taken out
32:04by Markscape
32:04Holden racing
32:05one two
32:06allows the second place
32:06look at that
32:07for third
32:07yeah Tander may be
32:08I think you'll find
32:09Seaton got there
32:10Seaton from Tander
32:11in fourth place
32:12Markham fifth
32:13one hundredth of a second
32:18separating
32:19Seaton and Tander
32:21boy oh boy
32:21that was close
32:22so the 23 year old
32:23from Western Australia
32:24certainly got a good run
32:26out of that final turn
32:28and onto the front straight
32:29yeah it was really a good run
32:30because he was quite a long way behind
32:32maybe I don't know
32:33maybe Glenn missed the gear
32:34or something
32:34but it seemed to have been
32:35an ever so special good run
32:38Craig Baird there
32:40didn't have the best of starts
32:42to his day
32:43after having that spin
32:45just before the left hander
32:47which brings you on
32:48to the front straight
32:49but for the Kiwis watching
32:50he finished in 14th position
32:52so not a bad recovery
32:54this is your victor
32:57Markscape
32:58and more valuable
32:59championship points
33:00for our championship leader
33:01unusual amount of carnage
33:03in that one
33:04unbelievable
33:05and lots of work
33:06for the crews to do
33:07before we get set
33:08for race two
33:09and race three
33:10this afternoon
33:11there he is
33:12plenty of happy fans too
33:15Markscape
33:16from Craig Lowndes
33:17Glenn Seaton
33:18getting home third
33:19in a nail biter
33:20just edging out
33:21Garth Tander
33:22Larkham
33:23a tremendous performance
33:24for fifth
33:24Russell Ingle sixth
33:25Tony Longhurst seventh
33:26and Greg Murphy
33:27bringing the Kmart
33:28Commodore eighth
33:29and it's Ellery Faulkner
33:31Brad Jones
33:32Dougal McDougal
33:32Stephen Johnson
33:33Craig Baird
33:34Anthony
33:35trying a good performance
33:36in the Toll Falcon
33:36and Steve Reid
33:3716th
33:39if you could
33:40what would it be
33:43I'd go back
33:45about 40 years
33:46and I'd make my
33:47parents unbelievably wealthy
33:49it'd probably be war
33:52I think it's a bit
33:53a bit senseless
33:53well at this precise moment
33:57I would have to say
33:58I'd take
33:59400 millimetres
34:01off the Holden
34:01under trail
34:02at this moment
34:03it might be something
34:04about world peace
34:04next week
34:05but it consumes me
34:06right now
34:07I'll slow the forks in
34:10not even more
34:11poor blokes
34:13we've got to give them
34:14half a break
34:14don't we
34:14by now I'd be
34:16IndyCar world champion
34:17you
34:20you
