00:00Barbara Gallo in the past has been a place where plenty of records have been
00:04set. Mark Scaife yesterday set a new qualifying lap record. Craig Lowndes is
00:08the reigning lap record holder at the circuit. But this weekend we're
00:11celebrating a very special milestone and Dick Johnson caught up with Larry
00:15Perkins yesterday. Thanks Greg. I'm down here in the pits with longtime V8
00:21supercar driver Larry Perkins. And it has been a long time Larry, hasn't it? A long
00:25time since when? I know it's a long time since I started. Started way back in 1950
00:31on this day so 50 years. Do actually do older guys go faster or they just keep
00:38dwindling away? Well in your case you just dwindled the one and I don't want to do
00:42that so if I'm starting to dwindle away tell me. Larry I don't want to tell you
00:47right now but you're obviously getting older so things are starting to happen
00:51differently and and you've seen a lot of changes I suppose over that period of
00:54time? Well for sure yeah when I started racing the gear level was on the outside
00:58of the car but a lot of changes all for the good too I reckon and look I'm
01:03hanging in there and I'm not giving up just because the old clock hit that 50.
01:07Well listen obviously you've caused a fair bit of controversy over the years you
01:12know and of late the Larry Perkins bar and now we've got the bars in our cars
01:17and other people got them in their cars and now they're trying to get rid of
01:19them what's the story? Well it's really funny look I put this bar in Russell's
01:23car and no one's checked it yet but would you believe it's a plastic bar? I
01:26haven't got one in my own car and it's funny you can start trends like this you
01:30see and anyway look it does it's a lot of controversy over nothing you know
01:34there's Larry's bar crikey's you know there's only one spot there should be
01:38Larry's bar and it ain't in a race car. Well maybe it might help your car this
01:42weekend you're having a bit of a trouble with the rear end floating around the place?
01:44Yeah I am actually in there I was gonna come and see you about that
01:47happy birthday to you happy birthday dear Larry happy birthday to you hip hip hooray
02:01hip hip hooray hip hooray
02:03Well mate that's well done but I'd say thank you thank you
02:09gentlemen it's obviously uh this weekend is your is this your birthday this
02:14weekend Larry? Well I've heard that I've had the phone ringing and I've had the kids on
02:18the phone and you know but it must be something about that. Well listen how many
02:21times you've been 50? Uh a lot uh well I've had a lot of birthdays only one time 50
02:27though. Now finally what I'd like to say is are you going to do the same as me because
02:32you've got a long way to go if you have and that's wait till your son's old
02:34enough to take your place you're going to be around for a while. Well according to
02:37my young bloke he says dad don't you dare retire till I drive with you at
02:40Bathurst. Now I said Jack I don't reckon I'll let a 65 year old drive at Bathurst but
02:44uh I'll be around for a while I'm not giving up just Mr Cox moving on. Well done Guy and
02:49I hope you have a good day tomorrow. Thank you Dick. Much a good day Dave.
02:56We're back at Barbagallo race three about to get underway in round two of the Shell
03:01championship series. An absolutely huge crowd from the west are here to watch all of today's
03:06racing action and they're not going to be disappointed either. We'll take a look for
03:09you at the race standings if you like in terms of after two races. Lowndes is top of the points
03:14for this round. Eighty points. His teammate Mark Scaife just six points or eight points in
03:18arrears and it's Garth Tander and Russell Ingle tied for third place. Radisic and Barguana
03:2358 and 56 points respectively.
03:28As the fields make their way around the Barbagallo layout we'll take a look at how they line up for
03:32the final race of the day. Craig Lowndes and Mark Scaife. Front row again Russell Ingle and Garth Tander on row
03:38two. Paul Radisic started seventh sixth so he's having a consistent day you could say. Jason Barguana
03:46and Stephen Johnson starts out of eight. You might notice the yellow boxes to the right hand side of
03:51your screen. Box one is where they qualified for race one. Where they started for race two is the box
03:56furthest on the right. Longhurst and Morris row five. Murphy and wheel row six. Stephen Ellery,
04:00Craig Baird alongside. He had a bad day today. Qualified 11th but 28th he started race two.
04:06Bored his way back to 14th so he's had an up and down sort of day. Larry Perkins and Glenn Seaton
04:10struggling with setup. He's back in 16th. We go further back and take a look at row nine. John
04:16Faulkner lines up alongside Mark Poole and Dougal McDougal in the Pepsi racing Commodore alongside Steve
04:22Reid on row 10. Neil Crompton hovering around the back of the top 20 all weekend really. He'll start
04:27out at 21. John Bauer good recovery from those steering box dramas. Start out at 22. Rodney Forbes
04:34and Trevor Ashby. Brad Jones the Aussie male racing Falcon on row 13 alongside another Falcon in the
04:41hands of Anthony Tratt. Then it's Thomas Mazira and Paul Romano on row 14. Mick Donagher and the
04:46Ultratune TDK machine. Cameron McLean alongside Stephen Richards in the Kmart Commodore and Cameron
04:52McConville. Some spin out in race two. He'll start from 32. Last position on the grid. A tough day
04:57for the auto pro team. Well Dick Johnson your team has been working away feverishly. They've made some
05:02changes for this final race. Well I think the key to winning these V8 supercar races is actually
05:07knowing how to change your car as the weather changes throughout the day and that's what happens
05:12between heats one two and three. The the setups of the cars differ significantly. I guess a lot of
05:18the Ford fans will be frustrated this year Dick. They're waiting for the results. They want to see
05:21these Falcons winning some races. Last year the team said they were quite difficult to set up or
05:25quite inconsistent in their results. Is it still that way with the car? They're a very difficult
05:29car to understand and I think that now that we're getting more time with the car and the more races
05:34we do the more we learn about it and and I think you'll find they'll start working their way towards
05:38the front of the field. This is a 20 lapper folks. Interesting point of interest for you.
05:43Mark Scaife and Garth Tander currently lead the Shell Championship Series. At the conclusion of race
05:49two they both have 174 points. So this third race is really going to be crucial in terms of determining who
05:57our championship leader will be after two rounds. There is Mark Scaife. His teammate Craig Lowndes
06:02continuing his dominant performance. Winning races one and two here. Who will win race three? We've
06:06got a green flag at the back of the pack. Listen to them rising. The revs that is at the V8 supercars.
06:11Will it be Lowndes? Will it be Scaife? We're set to go racing here at Barbe Gallo. Oh what a bit of a
06:15creep on the line there from Scaife. Lowndes a brilliant start though. Look at Radisic trying to dive
06:19through the field. Ingle's got the door covered. Lowndes again blasts away. Oh he's a phenomenal
06:24starter isn't he? Three from three. He's just got the jump on his teammate. Those two so close in
06:29performance but it's so critical that first 100 to 200 meter sprint down to turn one. Lowndes has done
06:34it again. We've seen a good battle going on here between Tander and Russell Ingle. Tander gets
06:38shuffled back one. Ingle the enforcer muscles his way past as they come through the Esses now through
06:43short corner and heading for the run to cold corner. This huge field of V8s. With Ingle sitting
06:49up there I think you're going to see some action because he doesn't like coming second. I can tell
06:54you that much. Status quo returns in heat three. Four Commodores. One, two, three, four. First of the
07:00Falcons in fifth. Paul Radisic. Consistent performance all day in the shelf forward as this big field
07:05sweeps up into sixth gear. 250 kilometers an hour on the approach. The upfield break as they come down
07:11towards pitch straight for the first time. A bit of a challenge. Yeah. Bargwana throwing out a challenge
07:16to Larkin. On the run to the start finish straight. Steven Johnson also trying to come for the ride
07:21with Bargwana. Bargwana not quick enough on the back of Larkin. And Larkin all the time trying to
07:26chase down Paul Radisic. It's just a huge freight train. Steven Johnson through. Steven Johnson has made
07:31his way past Tander. Look at this. Tony Longhurst trying to come with him. Three wide. Goodness me there's
07:35contact right left and center there. Tand, or Bargwana rather, hanging on to it. And oh goodness knows
07:41only how. Oh look at this. They're all leaning on each other elbow to elbow as they come over the
07:44hill for the second time. Longhurst on the outside. But now that puts him on the inside for the next
07:50turn. So plenty of cut and thrust in the opening lap as they fight for position. Every position crucial.
07:56And Murphy's moved up too. He's behind Steve. Greg Murphy's certainly making a good fist of things here.
08:01We can see stupid Ellery there as well in the Supercheek Falcon. Had some troubles earlier in
08:08the day. But hopefully they've been able to fix that car and get it on the pace. You can see
08:12Tony Longhurst trying to make his way around the Supercheek Falcon. Now Murphy all over the
08:16back of Paul Radisic. And Will is coming for the ride with Longhurst. This is a huge freight train of
08:21full attack between Will and Longhurst. And Will hangs on to it.
08:25That is disgusting.
08:26Road rage. V8 supercars. No one was going to give away there. They were into each other half
08:32a dozen times before they sorted that one out. Look at Faulkner up the inside. In the Asia Online
08:36Commodore. He's giving the John Deere Commodore plenty of grief as they come up toward the Esses.
08:42And that's actually just the nature of the race track. The thing is when you get up beside somebody
08:47like that you've got to give the other competitor a bit of racing room. You know if you're clearly done
08:52you don't run people off the road. Larry Perkins and John Bauer are in behind this group as well. So
08:59those uh wildly older competitors just waiting for a mistake from some of these youngers. Youngers up
09:05the front. Seaton holding out Paul at the moment. Seaton in 15th position. This is the battle for 15th.
09:15And look at this continuing barge between Garth Tander and Russell Ingle. Tander's managed to get
09:21back around Ingle so that's a good move. Ingle had him early on the first lap.
09:24And look out if it's a rat. Here comes your man. The rat they call him. And he's really got his
09:32head down this weekend. Let's have a look at the shell helix replay Dick. Well look at that like the
09:36guy is clearly up to the A killer and he's just driving him off the road. And if it had been me I would
09:42get my foot into it and turn him around. How nobody came off there is amazing. Oh look at this you know
09:49that's that's just not on that sort of stuff. Tiny Longhurst. Lucky that they both were able to
09:55continue. Looked like Wall was about to lose control of Spear across in front of the field. He managed to
10:00gather it up. Unfortunately they've been able to continue. But no one's being able to do anything
10:05this weekend about the two flying red Commodores at the front of this field. The mobile Holden racing team
10:10continuing to dominate in the west. Look at this challenge down the inside by Paul Wheel.
10:13As they come under brakes up the inside of Baird in the perfect board. Winner of race two around one but
10:21he's struggling for speed. It just shows you how important it is to qualify in these sort of races
10:26because we're in a situation here where I think that if race two was... Oh! Seated! Seated was up there
10:34trying to go with Baird and it's all come unstuck through that cat corner. That's almost a replay of
10:40last year. Yeah. What did he just go in a bit too hot under brakes Dick or what? I think he gets
10:44his nose up in the insides and didn't sort of carry on with the move because the other car came across
10:49on top of him. Well it's been a pretty bad weekend for Glenn Seaton so far in terms of results running
10:54around the middle of the pack and now he's gone right to the back of it. That is not where Glenn Seaton
11:00wanted to be in the forward-sickford racing Falcon. A lot of work to do. He drops to the back of the pack
11:06at the front though. It's Lowndes and Scaife. Lowndes leads it from his teammate. Let's take a closer look.
11:11He's just gone in pretty hot and half up beside the other car. Just not quite enough to sort of exercise
11:17to move. I think we've got a shot from the inside as well, Dick. Have a look at this. Another view.
11:22Well he's, he's not exactly left a lot of move here through it. What he's done is tried to avoid, uh,
11:30he's tried to avoid the per-tech car and he's jumped on the brakes a bit harder and it's locked the rear wheels.
11:34Yeah. This has not been the weekend for the Ford Tickford racing team when you consider that
11:39Neil Compton is down in 20th and now his teammate Glenn Seaton all the way at the back of the pack.
11:44This is what's happening up front though, folks. Craig Lowndes heading, hopefully he thinks,
11:49for three from three here at Barbagallo this weekend and maintaining his unbeaten record.
11:54That is unbelievable. His teammate Scaife in second, Tander in third. Now Russell Ingle,
11:59who sits in fourth place. This is another battle going on further back. Radisic, Larkham,
12:04Morris and Bargwana. Look at Morris driving defensive. Bargwana looking for a line as they come down to the
12:09start, finish straight. Morris shuts the door. I think Big Cat took a shortcut somewhere.
12:14There we go. He's showing a lot of speed in that car. The older VS model Commodore.
12:20Quite impressive speed for his first seat. Look at this down the inside.
12:24Oh, Bargwana really had to stand the car on its nose. Amazing he didn't lock up his rear brakes.
12:29So he could have capitalised on that. It had he been close enough. Yeah.
12:32And see the gap now that Mark Larkham's pulled out on him. Yeah, whenever these, you get two cars
12:38getting involved in a bit of fisticuffs, it always slows them down. And has the car in front to pull
12:42away. And Bargwana trying desperately to find his way past the big Kev machine. So the auto
12:47amendment, Lowndes and Scaife. 1.9 seconds up the road from Tander, who's got Ingle a couple of
12:52seconds behind him. Then Radisic, Larkham, Morris, Bargwana, Murphy up in the top 10 now. And Stephen
12:58Ellery in the super cheap Autos Falcon, he climbs into the top 10. Well, the Gary Rogers Motorsport
13:03Commodore. Jason Bargwana sporting the battle scars. The 27-year-old now resides in Melbourne
13:08and driving 11 tenths here in this race. Look at him again having another go at Paul Morris.
13:12And he just can't quite get through. You'll remember that Jason broke through for that
13:18historic win last year. Winton won three from three there. Look at him again.
13:23Be interesting to see if that, if that was Neil Trump and what would happen.
13:29Bargwana trying to find a way around, but this Commodore's going right down the middle of the road
13:34in front of him. Not leaving an opportunity to stick the nose alongside. So Bargwana getting
13:40frustrated. His teammate Tander up there in third. Some 2.1 seconds behind the Mobile Holden Racing
13:46team. And Bargwana finds himself back in the pack. This is eighth position of the car 35 of
13:52Alvaline Cummins machine. Bargwana now coming under pressure from Murphy. You can see Greg Murphy in
13:58the background there in the Kmart Commodore. So he's tagged on to the back of this trio. There's
14:04a good shot of you for you of the lead. Stephen Ellery on it's a shame. He was running in 10th place
14:09in the Supercheap Falcon and looking very good. They'd had problems with his car and they'd done
14:14some work on it between race two and race three. It was looking good in 10th place, but it's all come
14:18unstuck for him. Bradley Jones in 22nd position there, just spring over the hill in the Aussie male
14:23Ford. He's been all at sea this weekend. The team don't have a lot of data to go on with that car,
14:29so they're sort of learning as they go. It just shows how tough it is. Holden Racing team rubbing
14:34their noses in it this weekend. They're certainly in a class of their own, Mark. They really are,
14:38aren't they? Lowndes heading. This could be a perfect score. 12 wins from 12 starts. If he brings it
14:44across the line this time, this man still has never been beaten at Barbagela Raceway. Unbelievable record.
14:5112 race victories and of course he's heading at this stage certainly for four round wins from four
14:58starts as well. Look at this Steven Johnson there, big brake lockup down into Cobb Corner. Four Ford
15:04Falcons here battling away Longhurst and Weill. They're back together again. They certainly are
15:07there at it again. It'll be interesting. Yeah, this will be interesting because they come under
15:10brakes down the end of the main straight. Here we go. Look at Weilley's weaving all over the place.
15:14He wants another tight at Longhurst. Oh, Mark Poole. In the bunker. The John Deere Commodore. He's been having
15:21quite a competitive weekend. That's not the way he would want to finish the day. And he is miles out in the
15:26Sahara there. Actually, he's that far out. I don't think they'll even bother to bring a pace car out.
15:31No, he's a long way off the racing line. That's at the cold corner. Yellow flags, stationary yellow flags
15:37toward the cars. The car is down at the bottom. Now, interesting there, Mark Poole. So, Jason Barguana
15:43has gotten around Paul Morris. So, something's happened there. And here comes Murphy. And Murphy, yeah,
15:47coming along for the ride as well. So, Morris, former super-filling competitors. Murphy,
15:52straight down the inside. Well, I've got to say, Morris left the door open there.
15:56Bigger door. You can put a Mack truck in there.
16:00So, they work over the hill once again. Murphy moving his way forward. And I wonder maybe if
16:04Paul Morris has, perhaps, some sort of problem. The... Well, I'll be interested to see what
16:09happened there, because Murph snuck under Paul Morris. And I think there might have been a yellow
16:13flag showing there for... Yeah, Mark Poole. For Mark Poole's car. So, I'd be interested to see if
16:18the stewards have another look at that one. Well, he might just cop a black flag, or, uh, unless he
16:23lets Morris pass again. Because if Morris had the door wide open, I wouldn't have thought he'd normally do
16:26that. So, we'll find out whether there'll be any action against that. Hopefully, for Murphy,
16:32it won't be the case, because he's had a terrible weekend. I was talking to him before this race,
16:35he just said, mate, we just don't know what we've got to do to make this car work. It's understeering
16:40into corners. It's oversteering out of corners. We can't get any balance or good traction into the
16:44car. And it looks like it's going very strongly in this final heat. We are around about half-race
16:49distance lap. 11 of 20. Let's check them for you. Craig Lowes is your race leader. From teammate Mark
16:55Scaife at the moment. Garf Tanner sits in third. Russell in your fourth. That's going to be an interesting
17:00battle towards the end. Paul Radisic, first of the fourths in fifth. Lark of sixth. Jason Barcliner,
17:04seven. And Greg Murphy has fought his way up to eighth place at the moment. Morris ninth.
17:08John's in tenth. What a race this is going to be. Can Lowes go on to make it four wins from four
17:13round starts?
17:20Welcome back to Bar McGallow. We are on the downhill run towards the end of race three. Problems there
17:25for John Bowe. He's had a spin. That looks like it's on the exit of Cold Corner. So, it's not been the
17:30weekend for the Catafilla Falcon. Or John Bowe for that matter. Lowes continues to lead from Mark Scaife.
17:37But the interesting piece of news is that Garf Tanner is closing. Yeah, just watching his lap times
17:42the last time around. He's been taking a few tenths of a second out of the Holden racing team. Now,
17:46whether they are just backing it off to win at the slowest possible speed, no one knows. But
17:50Tanda, there he is. The Valvoline Cummins machine. Just start to zero in on the back of Mark Scaife's car.
17:56Well, this will give Craig a bit of an opportunity to pull some fresh air between
18:02himself and Mark Scaife. Just falling into his hands, isn't it? It certainly is at this point.
18:06Well, Tanda made it clear heading into this round that he wanted to put on a strong show for the local
18:11fans. He led the championship heading into this round following his two second places at Phillip Island.
18:17This is home turf for the 22-year-old. And he wanted to walk away if he could with at least one race win.
18:25Let's have a look at this again, Dick. Well, Cameron McLean's obviously got himself up inside Steve
18:30Reid. And he's obviously not going to give up. But I think Steve Reid cops a bit of like that on the
18:37front wheel. And I think that the front wheel then locks up. Now, this has happened during our at
18:43break, folks, for those of you that may not have seen it. And he's turned the steering wheel and goes,
18:47straight ahead. Ah, okay. He's broken something in the front end. That was a big hit, wasn't it?
18:50It certainly was. I think that's put paid to Steve Reid's day. Now, we're also getting word from
18:55the pits. That's Neil Crompton coming in. So the disastrous weekend for Neil Crompton just continues.
19:01In fact, for that matter, it's been a disastrous week when you consider what happened at the Grand Prix.
19:04Look at this. Tanda all over the back of Scaife and going for it for the run down pit straight.
19:09We've got six laps to go. And look at this down the inside. Tanda makes a move on Scaife and takes
19:14second place. The Gary Rogers motorsport driver. The fans cheer. Tanda, the local lad, is through.
19:2022-year-old from Perth. What a great performance. Well, that wasn't anything that the
19:25Holden Racing team would have planned. Garth Tanda's done that on pure merit. He's ground him down.
19:30Scaife the first to go. Can he catch Craig Lowndes before this race is over? He's flying in the
19:35Valvoline Cummins car. Well, I think Scaife has obviously got a bit of a problem there somewhere
19:40on the line because his car is starting to go a bit slower. Whether his tyres are starting to go on
19:44him or what, one would never know. But it certainly hasn't made any effect to Garth Tanda. He's smoking on.
19:50Yeah, quite right there. Tanda is now going to try and close the gap to Lowndes. But while all that
19:54battling was going on between Lowndes and Scaife, you should be able to get a shot of it here
19:58because Lowndes has managed to gallop away. And with the laps counting down, 10-10 to close that gap.
20:04There it is. That's a graphic shot of it. Oh, I think he's got a fair sort of a task in front of
20:09him to close his gap on Craig. Five laps remaining. Oh, Jason Barguana's gone. Well, goodness me.
20:17He'd been driving, I guess, in some respects, Mark at 11 tenths today, really going out at hammer and tong.
20:22And that is hard luck. Now, we get word from the pits also that Neil Crompton, who we saw in the pits
20:28a few moments ago, had contact with John Bow. So that has played a Neil Crompton's way. Well, look at
20:34Barguana having a go at the birthday. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, he's having a shocker. Oh, guess where he's
20:40going to visit this afternoon. Dear, oh, dear. Larry Perkins. The birthday boy yesterday, not a happy
20:46way for him to end his weekend either. Mate, they have no respect for 50-year-olds. That's getting served up,
20:52big time. Perkins just left the slightest little gap on the inside. Barguana had two wheels on the
20:58grass. He just kept driving it through. He can't have more than two wheels on the grass in a minute.
21:02The Asia Online Commodore, John Faulkner. He sweeps past Barguana as he tries to gather it all up.
21:10And Faulkner now. That'll move him up a couple of positions. Just inside the top 15. Oh,
21:15Barguana. Again, sideways on the exit of Cold Corner. Four laps remain in this one, folks.
21:20Lowndes, Tander, one and two on the road at the moment. Scaife and Ingle, third and fourth. First
21:25to the forwards is Radicic. Look at this. That is Barg. Whoa. Oh, boy. Oh, how lucky was that?
21:32Yeah. Oh, well. Here we go.
21:35Now, what's happened there? Well, he's got out on the marbles a little bit, and the Mitre 10 car went
21:42straight underneath him, clearly, and he's just lost it. Nice piece of evasive action from Greg Murphy
21:48as well. How he didn't get caught up in that, I don't know. Well, I can tell you, when you've got
21:51two a tail and two a burn, you're not going to sort of go anywhere but backwards.
21:56Wins Commodore of Rodney Forbes, the Sydney privateer, and the third of the Gibson Motorsport
22:00prepared cars. He comes in for new rubber, and he's probably a victim of the troubles that a lot
22:05of the teams have been having this weekend. This understeer problem has really been taking its toll
22:10on the tyres. Front right tyre was the problem here from Pittsburgh. Rodney gets back into the race.
22:16Three laps remaining for our race leader. See, there's not a lot of difference in power between
22:19any of these cars, and there's no advantage in the straights like there has been years ago
22:23with the old Group A and things like that. And, of course, these cars now are running on their new
22:27Optomax Fuel, which seems to be working quite well. Well, counting down towards the finish,
22:35there is third place at the moment, Mark Scaife, the man who was blindingly quick in qualifying,
22:40the new qualifying lap record. Don't forget, of course, folks, you can check out all the latest
22:45programming information on 10 on the website. He's got some problems with the way he was sliding all
22:52over the place there. Probably damage to the car. We're just checking a tyre or front brake or
22:58something on the front end of the car, so things not working right in car. 35 for Bargwana. Two
23:02seconds. The gap now between Lowndes and Tanda. Lowndes just stamping his authority on this race.
23:08Two laps to go. A 59.66 for our race leader. A 59.97 for Tanda. He's pulled three tenths on him.
23:14So, are we just getting a little bit too close for comfort, Dick? Well, this is certainly going to turn
23:20into a fantastic event at Adelaide, I think. The Eclipse of 500 in Adelaide will be absolutely
23:25blinded with the cars being this close. Oh, Larry Perkins, that's a calm corner. Well, that's what
23:31happens when you get over 50, I think, isn't it? Over the limit. Well, Larry has been out of the scenery a bit this race.
23:38Oh, I think the steam would still be coming out of his ears. So, Russell Engel sitting back there in fourth
23:45position. Lonely race. Paul Radisic was all over him earlier, but the shell challenge has cooled a little.
23:53So, Engel now has a little bit of breathing space. Oh, boy, he's been done twice. Oh, gosh. Like
23:58that's Paul Romano. Not a young bloke. Yeah, oh, well, as I say, they have no respect. Yeah,
24:03happy birthday, Larry. No respect. No respect for their elders whatsoever.
24:09So, Larry has another taste of the sand. Now we're on our way home, folks. One lap left to go.
24:15Craig Lowndes from Garth Tander. Mark Scaife sits in third. Engel fourth. There's your man,
24:19who is in fifth place at the moment in the Shell Helix Falcon. Paul Radisic doing a great job,
24:25flying the flag for the Blue Oval fans. Murphy at seventh. That's a great recovery for him,
24:30considering his weekend thus far. Morris in eighth, Stephen Johnson ninth, and Longhurst rounds out
24:35the top ten. Well, Lowndes is well in control. It's now 2.4 seconds the gap. He was just
24:40playing with that over the last couple of laps, just pumping it out a little bit to give himself a
24:44bit more breathing space. So, Tander, even though he's on the march there, looks like Lowndes has
24:48responded magnificently in the last two laps. He is well in control of this one. Well, I tell you what,
24:53at the end of this evening, I think the stewards are going to be very, very busy. I think so.
24:57Craig Lowndes brings it towards the start, finish straight for the final time. In behind yesterday's
25:02birthday boy, Larry Perkins, but it's going to be Craig Lowndes. Three from three. Congratulations.
25:08Takes out another round victory. Garth Tander will finish second. Mark Scaife finishes third.
25:13Russell Engel fourth and Radisic fifth. That is a fantastic result for Craig Lowndes. Well done to the
25:19youngster. Well, that's fantastic, actually. You know, he's done a magnificent job, obviously,
25:24for all the races he's had around here. It's been tremendous. So, there he is making his way around
25:31past the fans.
25:35And there's Garth Tander, the local guy who finished second. He really threw out
25:39his best challenge today. Now, we'll check the round winners for you. And Craig Lowndes, of course,
25:45is the round winner. Three from three. Mark Scaife home second. And Garth Tander, the local finishes
25:51third. So, that's how they finished in terms of round two of the Shell Championship Series.
25:57It's a great effort by the young guy. He's really kept his head and drove very sensibly. Put on a very
26:02good passing move on Mark Scaife to actually come second outright in the third heat. Great job also by Paul
26:08Radisic, the first of the forwards home. Gee, he worked for his money this weekend, Dick. I tell you what,
26:11he's been working for his money for quite some time because, you know, the car's, as I said,
26:15not quite right yet. But when he gets it right, I can assure you, he'll take it up to the Holden,
26:21guys. Here's how they finished in race three of round two of the Championship. Craig Lowndes from
26:26Garth Tander. Mark Scaife home third. Russell Ingle fourth. Radisic first to the forwards. Then it's
26:31Larkham, Murphy and Morris in the top eight. We go further back for you. Steve Johnson,
26:35a great job in ninth. Tony Longhurst, tenth. Four wheel. All that barning with Tony Longhurst went
26:41right to the wire. He finished 11th. And it's Baird, McDougal, Faulkner, Richards and Jones.
26:45Mazira, McLean, Seaton and McComba, we'll take a break here. And when we come back,
26:49we'll catch up with our winners and place getters.
27:09I'm pretty happy. Craig Lowndes doing a big burnout for the fans. He improves on his already
27:13impeccable record here in the West. Let's take a look at the results at the end of race three for you.
27:18And there they are. Craig Lowndes, your winner. Fantastic effort. Garth Tander,
27:21a well-deserved second place for the Gary Rogers Motorsport team. And Mark Scaife getting home
27:25third. Some good performances also by the Ford drivers, particularly Paul Radisic and the Shell
27:29Helix Falcon. Well, on the podium now is Mark Osler with some pretty happy Holden drivers.
27:35Well, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Despite the introduction of control
27:39tyres last year and a renewed push by Ford, Holden remains the dominant force in the West. The third
27:45part of that equation, three Holden winners today is Garth Tander, the local boy.
27:55Something wrong with that, eh? Yeah, how good is that? The car was really,
27:58really good in that last one. We made a few changes between races and made it a lot better.
28:03I would have liked to have the car like that at the start of the weekend. We might be giving
28:05those red cars a run for their money. But thanks to our guys, to Valvoline, Cummins and Holden for
28:10sticking behind us. And we're looking forward to the next one for sure. I'll tell you what,
28:13consistency pays off because that still leaves you two points ahead in the championship chase.
28:17Yeah, it's still a long way to go though. We've got a lot of races ahead of us and we'll just keep
28:21going the way we're going. And we've got to find a bit more speed to catch the red cars. But once we
28:24do that, we're feeling pretty confident towards the end of the year. Put your hands together, folks.
28:28Garth Tander, local hero in WA. I'm sure we'll see a lot more from him in season 2000. Of course,
28:34another runaway win by the Holden Racing team. And the second part of that equation was,
28:38of course, pole position man, Mark Scape. Wow. That looked like hard work out there.
28:47I guess the starts are so critical when you and Craig are so evenly matched.
28:50Well, I said to the guys, you know, before that race, when we were doing a debrief, that you'd
28:55reckon that I could make one out of three starts, but I effectively failed. But I mean, it was really
28:59good. The car was really good other than the last 10 laps of that race. And obviously our cars have,
29:04you know, Lowndes, he's the man to beat here. Obviously he hasn't lost a bloody race here.
29:07So, you know, it's been a really good result. Garth really came storming through toward the
29:11end there. What, the tyres going off at the end? Yeah, they weren't that fresh, I've got to say.
29:15And when he got to me, I really couldn't do much about him, but I obviously needed the points and
29:18didn't really want to get caught up in a battle. But, you know, to our guys and to Holden and to
29:22Mobil and the rest of our sponsors, obviously, to come here again and have a one-two, it's a
29:25pretty happy hunting ground for us. Pretty good. Put your hands together, folks. Mark Scape, second place today.
29:30And right now, the big moment we've all been waiting for, I call on Ross Brodie, the motorsport
29:35manager for Shell, to make the presentation. He's got a perfect score here in V8 supercars.
29:3912 race starts, 12 race wins. Craig Lowndes!
29:42Now, what are you doing out there? No one seems to be able to touch you. What's your secret?
29:52Well, I guess the guys, it's a credit to the guys, if they've obviously got a good mix here.
29:56Obviously, Wannaroo suits us. And that last race, definitely the tyres were going away and Garth was
30:01catching us. He managed to catch them past Mark, but really, we had to dig deep and really didn't
30:05have a lot left. So, you know, we did a fantastic to the guys. Mobil, Holden and Bridgestone really did a
30:09great job for us today. And really, we're going to go on to the rest of the year and hopefully have
30:12a good one. I'll tell you what, you got those starts sorted out. Well, I guess, like Mark,
30:16we've been trying to get them right since the VT introduction of VT. It really hasn't been a
30:20really good strong point with me. And really, I guess I've been trying to practice that. It's
30:24come off well for this weekend. Adelaide's to come in the rest of the year. Look forward to that,
30:27folks. Put your hands together, folks. Craig Lowndes, the winner of round two.
30:31The Adelaide 500 lies ahead. Two rounds down in the championship, 11 to go. And the
30:37championship point score looks like this. Garth Tander, top of proceedings on 10 points,
30:42just too clear of Mark Scaife. So a pretty slender lead. Lowndes, 28 points further in arrears.
30:47Radicic is in fourth place and leading a pack of six Ford drivers. And another point of interest for
30:52you is Russell Ingle. He had no points at Philip Arden, but he's back at looking good now. He's 10th in the championship.
