00:00Celebration time for Craig Lowndes
00:10A couple of points of interest for you from that race
00:12Jason Barguana started 9th but slipped to 31st
00:16No luck for the Castrol Commodores either
00:18Larry Perkins qualified 4th, finished 20th
00:20And the Enforcer went from 6th to 21st
00:23Good job though by Glenn Seaton
00:24After stalling on the line, he recovered to finish very, very well
00:27Time now to catch up with our race winner
00:29Here's Mark Osloff
00:30Craig Lowndes, congratulations on winning race 1
00:33It was a real battle of tactics but you came through in the end
00:35Very strong performance
00:36Well it was, it was a fantastic pit stop from the team
00:38We got back out on track behind Garth
00:40We had to make up some positions and some times
00:42But really the position at the end was fantastic for us
00:45Now you have to use the tyres from race 1 in race 2
00:49How are those tyres looking?
00:50Well at the moment the tyres are looking great
00:52The first in of the first race I think I blistered, started to blister 1
00:56But we've got 10 tyres to play with so I've got one to replace that
00:59The other stint of race 1 was fantastic
01:02So it'll be alright for race 2
01:04Best of luck
01:05Thanks Mark
01:06Now if you look at Greg Russ, Craig Lowndes after that dominant win in race 1
01:11We'll start from pole position with Tander alongside the Valvoline machine
01:14Scapen cropped and great run from the FTR driver
01:17Really put a lot of pressure on HRT yesterday
01:20Further back row 5, Craig Baird and Stephen Ricks
01:22Jung, Paul Will a good job yesterday
01:24He'll go very strongly no doubt today
01:26And John Bauer starting beside him
01:27Stephen Johnson and Brad Jones make up row 8
01:30Cameron McConville making his V8 supercar debut for the auto pro team
01:35Big quality field there, they're ready to go
01:38Lowndes sitting on pole position
01:39We are away
01:40Brilliant start there by Tander
01:42So he's gotten away very nicely
01:44And looks like Lowndes settling into 2nd place
01:47They're all through very clean as we head down
01:493 abreast
01:49Look at this scape trying to go around Lowndes
01:52And he does it
01:52So scape moves into 2nd place
01:54Lowndes tucks into 3rd
01:55Tander said see you later
01:57And Crompton's in 4th
01:59Yeah, the thing that's going to be the big problem today
02:01Is tyres
02:02Because the track temperature today
02:03Is around 34, 35 degrees
02:06And yesterday it was only 22
02:08A lot of the Holden's had terrible tyre troubles
02:11And only just made it to the finish
02:13And it does seem as if the Ford of
02:15Keep your eye on the Ford of Seton and Radisic
02:18Because their tyres were in really good shape at the end of it
02:20Yeah, so was Neil Crompton
02:22He was very happy with the condition of his tyres after that race
02:25He's up in 4th position
02:26Oh, a little muscle going on further back in the pack
02:28Seton now
02:30Tries to make some progress
02:32In the 2nd of the FTR pack
02:33As they sweep down through Siberia
02:3545 minutes of racing ahead of them
02:37One compulsory pit stop to come to change tyres
02:40All sorts of drama could unfold
02:42A couple of retirements yesterday
02:44Mike Conway, as we mentioned earlier
02:46His car, of course, in that massive crash
02:48He won't be starting today
02:49And McDonough as well
02:51Unfortunately, they've blown two engines here this weekend
02:54In the TDK Commodore
02:56So they won't be starting today
02:57The field streamed down through MG Corner
02:59Tanda is your leader
03:00The two-hole racing team
03:01Oh, it's not going on this
03:01That is Wheel
03:02Paul Wheel just gathers it up in the KMJ Radiatus Falcon
03:06That's good driving
03:07That's twice he's had to do that this weekend
03:09Yeah, that was a really close one
03:11It's all going to be about looking after tyres this
03:13I think if they really carry the tyres in the first sort of six or seven laps of the race, Mark
03:18It's going to be curtless because the track temperature is so much higher
03:22You see Longhurst is on new tyres
03:24Because the thing packed up yesterday
03:26So Longhurst is going to be
03:28Oh, that's forked up
03:29Look at that
03:30Oh, dear me
03:31That's from the start
03:32And that's the scenic route
03:33So does he make it back on?
03:35Now, John started this race from the back of the pack
03:38He's had some real tyre troubles
03:39And in fact was looking for a chiropractor last night as well
03:41He had a pinched nerve in his back
03:43So great to see him starting
03:44But not the start he wanted to make
03:45Not at all
03:46No, he's completely run out of tyres
03:47His tyre allocation for this weekend
03:49Has all been used up through various mishaps
03:51He's actually running on a set of tyres that he used at Bathurst last year
03:54That's how bad the situation's become for Faulkner
03:56And not the sort of start he would have wanted
03:58Another car to watch in the field today is Jason Bargwiner
04:00Oh, look at Crompton
04:01I know it's bad when I go up the inside
04:04Bargwiner went out with a fried clutch yesterday
04:06So he's got a whole new bunch of tyres
04:08Look at Seton putting the pressure
04:09On the back of the Winds Commodore
04:11We go on board with Craig Lowndes
04:13In behind his team mate Skate
04:14Up behind Tanda
04:15This is the leading trio we saw yesterday
04:18That's the HRT order swapped around
04:20So quick through here
04:21Up through this bit
04:23You're riding now with Craig Lowndes
04:27Now car six we're told
04:28Neil Crompton
04:29Neil Crompton has been given
04:31Or will be shown the black flag for a jump start
04:33So that is hard luck for Crompton
04:35A sensational performance yesterday
04:36He's currently running in fourth place
04:38This guy is cursed
04:40We've just definitely did someone's black hat in Crompton
04:42So they stream onto the Wayne Gardner front straight
04:46The 22 year old Garth Tanda doing a terrific job
04:49In the Valvoline Cummins Commodore
04:51He leads the field
04:52Mark Skate tucked into second place
04:54Yesterday's race one winner
04:55Craig Lowndes is in third place
04:57Neil Crompton will get shown the black flag this time around
05:00Well when we were on board there with Lowndes
05:03You could just hear Lowndes feathering it onto the straight
05:06Just gently, nice and gently onto the straight
05:08Because he knows he's got to look after the tyres
05:11And he did a really good job yesterday, Leonce
05:14I mean he looked after them perfectly
05:15Yeah, he makes it all look pretty easy, doesn't he?
05:18Yeah, he does
05:18And he's definitely the master of going fast
05:21Crompton has just been shown the black flag
05:23That apparent jump start
05:24So it's going to be interesting to see how long he hangs out there
05:28There's not much point in staying there
05:29He showed tremendous pace
05:31He showed tremendous pace in race one
05:33Yeah, he did
05:34Astronomical, was it?
05:37Something like that
05:37Yeah, very fast
05:40But Tanda, this is such an impressive performance
05:43Working very hard with Steve Kramer
05:45And he brings the oil and shock absorber technology into Australia
05:48He works closely with the Gary Rogers team
05:50And you really have to have your chassis working for you around here
05:53If you have a listen to Lowndes
05:55You listen to Lowndes, really feathery
05:57And really tacky
05:58And ever so, ever so easy
06:00And listen when he puts the power on
06:02See, nice and, nice and gentle
06:09Now listen out of this
06:10Tanda is in trouble here
06:11Look at Skate having a run on Tanda
06:13As they come towards the Winegarden
06:14Almost contact
06:15Almost contact
06:16Almost contact
06:17The thing's very close now
06:18The Holden Racing Team duo are on the attack
06:21And the 22-year-old Tanda is under siege
06:24Neil Crompton is still there in fourth place
06:26But he will be showing the black flag once again
06:28That effectively promotes Paul Radisic
06:30In the Shell Helix Falcon
06:31From fifth to fourth
06:32As they come on to the Mainstrike once again
06:34Well, no doubt
06:35John Matthews, the FTR team manager
06:37Will be down there
06:37Talking with the officials
06:38Trying to sort that thing out
06:40Off the racetrack
06:40Before they bring him in
06:41There's some debate over a jump start
06:45But look at Paul Radisic in the Shell
06:47Falcon starting to move up onto this leading
06:48Four cars
06:49He stalled the car on the grid yesterday
06:52There's a storming drive through the field
06:53To get back up to a strong position
06:55And there he is
06:56Right up behind the FTR Falcon
06:57It's so funny when you walk around
07:00You have to look at the tyres after
07:02And the difference
07:03The way the Holden and the Fords use the tyres
07:05Quite incredible
07:06You know, most of the Fords
07:07Look at Skate, Skate down the inside
07:09And hold the corner
07:10Skate's got him
07:11And the door, I've got to say
07:12Was that wide open there
07:13Yeah, he took a very conservative line
07:15Into that corner
07:16Skate saw it coming
07:17Look at Crompton
07:18It's going to get the foot thrown at him
07:20How many laps they give you
07:22Before you come out
07:23Three laps or four laps
07:24Alright, let's check the top ten
07:26Very quickly for you
07:27Mark Skate
07:28From Garb Standard
07:29Craig Lounce
07:29Neil Crompton
07:30Paul Radisic
07:31Craig Baird in sixth place
07:32That's a good job by him
07:33Mark Larkham has made substantial changes
07:35To the Mitre 10 Ford
07:36He is in seventh place
07:37Stephen Richards in eighth
07:38Young Todd Kelly
07:40Ninth
07:40And Paul Morris
07:41On his V8 Supercar Championship debut in ten
07:44I need to keep an eye on Craig Baird too
07:46He is the fastest man on the track at the moment
07:48He's just on a 135.51
07:49And he's really monstering the gap
07:52Between these leading five cars
07:53He's right up there
07:54Oh, look at this
07:54That's John Bao
07:55John Bao
07:55He's gone off down there
07:57That's MG Corner
07:58And it looks as though
07:58Paul Morris might have been tied up with that
08:00Let's have a look at that
08:02Oh, it's Engel
08:03Russell
08:03Russell Engel
08:05Round and round he goes
08:06Oh, there's some damage on the front of
08:08Paul Morris' Commodore
08:10Oh, how lucky
08:12This battle continues for the lead
08:15There's something lying in the track there
08:16Yep
08:16Crompton we hear is coming into pit lane
08:20He's responded to that black flag situation
08:22There it is
08:23The luckless number six FDR Falcon for his stop and go penalty
08:27Leap, quick left, leg slap
08:29Hands
08:30Chief Scrutineer Ray Robbins
08:33Let's him back into the action
08:35But he's dropped a number of positions
08:37I don't think I'd like to be hearing some of the things
08:39Neil Crompton would be having to say on the radio right now
08:41John Bao there coming right in behind Cromley
08:43So Mark Scaife is your leader
08:44If you've just joined us
08:45Look at Bao having a go at Crompton here
08:47As they work towards the southern loop
08:49Scaife your leader from Garth Tander
08:51And Craig Lowndes
08:52They're your top three
08:52And Neil Crompton has just been in for that stop
08:55Go penalty for allegedly jumping the start
08:57You ride in the Cat Falcon with John Bao
09:00It'll be interesting to see
09:02You remember last year at Queensland Raceway
09:05Bao had terrible tyre trouble
09:06They changed the car quite a lot
09:08And didn't have any problems in the next race
09:11So it'll be interesting to see if the same thing happens here
09:13Well, the fastest man on the track remains
09:15Craig Baird, the Kiwi, I should say
09:18Making his debut for the Queensland-based Stone Brothers team
09:21Another 35.85
09:23The Pertek Falcon closing the gap
09:25To Paul Radisic in four
09:27Now there's a little bit of smoke coming from the front of the Cat Falcon
09:30There is some damage you can see there
09:31To the front left
09:32And Bao has apparently radioed the pits about it
09:34But he's out there
09:35Doesn't seem to be slowing his speed too much
09:37And still circulating at the moment
09:39I was talking to one of Craig Baird's mechanics this morning
09:42Gary Bennett
09:43And he forgot his wife saying
09:45Wedding anniversary, 15 years
09:47Kimi says he's sorry
09:50Not a good idea
09:51So close to Valentine's Day
09:53Not a good move
09:54Yeah, not a good move
09:55He'll be having a frozen dinner tonight
09:57Your dinner's in the cat
09:59So Scaife, he leads the way
10:00Down toward the southern loop
10:02Scaife
10:03He's got a train wheeling up behind him
10:05He's the danger man
10:06He's the danger man
10:06As I doubt about that
10:07Pertek Falcon really closing the gap now
10:10He's had a very quiet build up to this race
10:12Quietly confident
10:1335.45 that last lap
10:16As against the next one
10:1735.50
10:18Yes
10:18He's the fastest man on the circuit
10:21Consistently at the last three or four laps
10:23Oh
10:24What is this?
10:25Good move
10:26Well this could be an indication
10:27Of Lowndes' tyres situation
10:29You can see a few blistered tyres
10:32In the Holden Racing 10p after that race
10:35One
10:35And it's going to be interesting
10:37To see what tyres they then put on the cars
10:39When they make their compulsory tyres
10:41H.R.T. may not have the best choice of rubber on there
10:43Look at this
10:45Craig Baird down
10:46The inside of Craig
10:47Oh up on the ripple strip
10:48So Baird through
10:50That's a fantastic move
10:51Around the back of Siberia
10:52As they head now
10:53Towards the Haysehead and Lugie Heights
10:55Well it just shows you
10:56What kind of neck Baird's tyres are in
10:58And how confident it is
10:59And we saw Baird yesterday
11:01He's not easy
11:01He's bloated to get back fast
11:03Is he?
11:03No
11:03He's got him in tremendous form
11:05In the Trans Am series
11:06In New Zealand over the summer
11:08It's a tough competitor
11:09Mark Scaife now
11:11Bring the blowtorch from Garth Tander
11:14In second
11:15Radisic now
11:15The first of the forwards
11:16Climbs up into third
11:17Let's have a look at the replay
11:18There's Radisic
11:18On the brakes there
11:20Door was left
11:21A little way open
11:22And once
11:24Louds out a look there
11:25It's almost like a surrender
11:27Isn't it Baird?
11:28Well yeah
11:28You know
11:29I'm sure you're right Mark
11:30I'm sure that's Craig's
11:31In
11:31Diabolical
11:34Tyres
11:35Now we're getting word from the pits
11:37That Paul Morris
11:38Who's currently running
11:39In ninth place
11:40Will get a stop go penalty
11:41For that altercation
11:42With Russell Ingle
11:44Which of course
11:44Saw John Bauer
11:45In all sorts of bother as well
11:46That was at MG Corner
11:47A little earlier
11:48So Mark Scaife
11:49From Garth Tander
11:50Paul Radisic
11:51In the Shell Helix
11:52Falcon
11:52Doing a fantastic job
11:54In third place at the moment
11:55Look at Tander
11:55Tander
11:56Tander
11:56Tander
11:56Tander
11:57Not close enough though
11:58Down into Honda Corner
11:59Craig Baird
12:00As well is
12:00Incredibly well positioned
12:02This team are using
12:03A lot of the set up data
12:04From
12:04From Riding
12:06From last year
12:07And Baird
12:08I admit he hasn't been too well, look at this, Sleetor, Sleetor giving a hurry up to Todd Kelly, that's a nice tight little bunch there isn't it?
12:19Out through Siberia once again, Mike Young Lions Commodore, Seaton right in the thick of things, Vigo on board with the 1997 Shell Champion, working hard at the wheels, they come up towards the Hayshed, back at gear as he guides it over Lukey Heights.
12:38And tries to make up position.
12:40Well we spoke to Glenn yesterday, he was incredibly happy with how this car was placed for today, the tyres looking good down the inside of Kelly, and moves himself one forward, looks like Dougal McDougal's coming along for the ride too.
12:50That's a long way around.
12:51So Seaton is on the charge here at Phillip Island, Markscape leads things, Garth Sander, Paul Radisic, Craig Baird, Craig Lowndes in 5th place, Mark Larkham doing a sensational job in 6th place at the moment, Stephen Richard 7th, and what about that, young Paul Will currently sits in 8th place.
13:08Paul Morris' night, he's been shown the black flag though, we'll be getting a stop-go penalty, Glenn Seaton right now in 11th, Paul, right after this.
13:15Welcome back to Phillip Island, look at this, Garth Tander, well what about that, putting all the pressure on Markscape, Paul Radisic is coming along for the ride as well, and if you're wondering where they are on the circuit, they're heading towards the Wayne Gardner main straight, so what a move by Tander down at MT Corner, and Scope would seem to be struggling possibly.
13:39Yeah, well the Shell 18 car is right on him as they come out of the main straight, this time around, is he going to try and pull out of the draft, use a bit of that Shell horsepower, we saw at MT Panorama, but he tucks in behind Scope, no room there, as Neil Crompton found yesterday in race 1, he's a very tough customer to pass.
13:59Now word also from the pits is, that Neil Crompton, if you can believe this, has been done for speeding in the pit lane during that stop-go penalty, and it's caught another one.
14:10Yeah, Blount is definitely struggling, there's no doubt.
14:13Yeah, he's got a 36.51, so his time's a little bit slow, Tander though, he's at 34.9 for the Valvoline Cummins Commodore, so the set-up on that car is working absolutely brilliantly, and Tander's using the car very well.
14:25Well when we spoke to team manager Gary Rodgers, looking for a run on Radisic, and Radisic shuts the door, the Rat not keen to let him through, currently holding down third place.
14:35Well when we spoke to Gary Rodgers yesterday, he said both his driver's cars were in really good shape, and I think that's why we're seeing Tander now doing the 34s.
14:41Oh, it's nice to see the two New Zealanders going good, because we're going out to New Zealanders today.
14:45We certainly are through 2v1, welcome to all our viewers over there in the land of the Long White Cloud, this is Paul Radisic, and another Kiwi, Craig Bedtuck right in behind him, Garth Tander at the moment is your leader, and we go a little bit further back here, this is John Bowe, having a go, Russell Engel, look at this, Siberia.
15:03Oh!
15:05Bowe's gone!
15:05Well I don't know, you'd have to say that it's...
15:08The Enforcer doing some enforcing.
15:10I don't think so, it looked like John turned in a little bit there.
15:13That'd be interesting to watch that again, yeah.
15:14Yeah, exactly.
15:15But the big contact there between and Bowe's gone right off, lucky to keep it out of the ploughed up ground there, would have been bogged for the day.
15:25JB, it hasn't been JB's day, what a happy camper.
15:29He was blindingly quick in the opening laps of race one.
15:32Incredibly quick.
15:32Ever since then, things have not been running well for the CAC racing team.
15:37So Bowe's got it all to do again.
15:40But a lot of these teams have been in tyre trouble.
15:43The right rear tyre, as Greg Russ said on the introduction, takes a monster around this track.
15:48Let's have a look at this on the replay, Baz.
15:50It's six and one and a half, doesn't it?
15:53Russell was letting it run a little bit wide and JB was...
15:57I don't know.
15:59It's a racing accident, I suppose they call it at the end.
16:03Now, this is Greg Murphy in the pits.
16:04These guys are doing their...
16:06In fact, no, that's the Wins Commodore, I should say.
16:09That's Rodney Forbes.
16:10Yes, of course, the Kellogg's Wins Commodore.
16:12He had a great drive yesterday, didn't he?
16:14He did.
16:17Oh, Crofton's second stop-go penalty.
16:20Oh, boy.
16:20Oh, dear.
16:21Just that he's in a position to pass, it all goes wrong for us.
16:24It's quite incredible, isn't it?
16:26Quite unbelievable.
16:27A couple of standout performers we should also tell you about at the moment.
16:30Paul Wheel running in seventh place.
16:32That is a fantastic effort from the young Queenslander in the KOJ Radiators Falcon.
16:37That is a new car and doing very, very well at the moment.
16:39And also, young Todd Kelly, the holding young Lions driver.
16:42Tenth place at the moment.
16:43Two young guys doing very, very well.
16:45So let's try and get this order back for you.
16:46Here's Garth Tandy, your race leader.
16:49Two and a half seconds up the road from Escape.
16:52Paul Radisic still there in third.
16:54So Escape's doing well.
16:55If he is struggling with tyres, he's certainly doing an excellent job of keeping that car on the pace.
17:01Because Radisic has not been able to find a way around,
17:03just as confident to find a way around in race one.
17:07Escape's doing a tremendous job here in second position.
17:10They fly down towards turn one.
17:12The interest of the C's car from the back here.
17:16Oh, it looks reasonably comfortable.
17:17It's not too bad.
17:18It's pretty...
17:19Lap time's, well, sort of around everyone.
17:22Tander is the one setting the pace.
17:2335.87.
17:25Everyone behind him is a 1.36 second bracket.
17:28We just heard from the pitch that John Bauer is going to protest Russell Ingle over that incident
17:32on the approach to Siberia last time around.
17:35It does look as if Baird is a little bit quicker than Paul Radisic at the moment.
17:39Oh, Radisic is all out in the back.
17:43The Holden Racing Team Commodore.
17:44You're looking out the front of the Shell 17 Ford.
17:47He's got Craig Baird right behind him for the two Kiwis leading the blue oval charge at Phillip Island
17:52in the opening round of Shell Hostility.
17:54Fastest man on the circuit, Glenn Seaton.
17:57In a 4.135.81.
17:59He's best in 8 seconds.
18:00But here is some of the new, the clear and simple telemetry.
18:02Let's just have a listen.
18:03You see, you only need that to do that a couple of times and it just sits in a spiral then.
18:27It just destroys the tyres, you know, the grain up and it just tears them to shreds.
18:31We'll try to see this is the hardest corner on the track on that right rear.
18:35Look at the loads going through that one tyre.
18:37And it's so important, you see, because if you don't really get on it out of that,
18:41look at that thing escape.
18:42It's heck, look at the horsepower that's got.
18:44I mean, he's just, he's going to be very, very difficult for Radisic to pass
18:49because he can't, even if he comes out onto the starfish right off his backside,
18:54he's not going to be able to sit in a slipstream enough to be able to get past on a break
19:01and into turn one.
19:02All this dicing between these two.
19:04It's about Garth Cantor to pull out.
19:05Garth's cleared off.
19:06Four seconds.
19:07Gabba, look at Bardo.
19:07Bardo's now having a look.
19:08That's Hall Radisic.
19:09So the two Kiwis are going out and hammer it, Tom.
19:12The thing is, though, you've got to consider that all these guys might be in the similar tyre trouble.
19:15Like Radisic, up there behind scape, but he may be powerless to pounce
19:19because he may be conserving his rubber.
19:21Yeah, I think the main deficit there at the moment is horsepower.
19:24It's Mark Rolcombe, Mark Alec.
19:26Yep, Mark's completed his pit stop.
19:28Looks like Larry's in there as well.
19:29And one of the, looks like it might be the Holden Young Lions entry
19:32in the pits of young Todd Kelly.
19:34So Larco comes out of pit lane.
19:36Their team have made monumental changes to this car overnight.
19:39They said they used their similar settings to last year.
19:42It didn't work during the course of the race yesterday.
19:44They admitted that.
19:45They've gone to something completely different today.
19:46Well, look at Lowndes.
19:47He's actually starting to close the gap.
19:48He dropped right off the pace there for a few laps.
19:52I wonder if he was just saving his rubber.
19:54That's intelligent driving from Lowndes
19:55because the compulsory tyre stop you would suspect
19:58he'd be coming up in the next two or three laps.
20:0120 minutes gone in this race.
20:03Look at Radisic.
20:04Oh, goodness me.
20:06Rubble and dirt getting chucked back at the guys behind him.
20:09Look at Bance.
20:10Bance things all over the show.
20:11You see it's...
20:12Yep, Lownes has really recovered quite strongly.
20:15Radisic is close to his side too.
20:16Bance for the run onto the front straight.
20:17Now Baird's come alongside Paul Radisic.
20:20Baird's got it.
20:21So Baird has moved up into third place.
20:23Radisic is in fourth.
20:24Who's going to hang on to him for the turn?
20:25Turn one.
20:26Do him turn.
20:27Look at...
20:27That thing with Baird is not slow.
20:29I reckon when Baird, if he gets a good run,
20:32it's going to be on to the start and finish straight.
20:34He'll get in.
20:34Because it looks as if the Stone Brothers' car is as quick as the HR team.
20:38I spoke to one of the Stone Brothers yesterday and he said to me that they're tyres
20:42and in fact the complete package on this car was looking just superb.
20:45Yeah, so they're in a good position.
20:48That's Thomas Mazarin's car.
20:49Here's young Paul Wheel.
20:50Oh, yep.
20:51Doing a fantastic job in sixth place.
20:53Here we go again.
20:53Baird looking for an inside run on Skate.
20:55Oh!
20:56Not close enough.
20:58Fake play over there, right?
21:00Yeah, exactly.
21:00The door was open though.
21:02And now for the run to Siberia.
21:04We jump on board Craig Lowndes, the defending champion.
21:06Look at the bit of a brake block up there from Radisic.
21:08Oh, so close from Lowndes.
21:14Up toward the Hayshed once again.
21:17Enormous speed as they swing up here.
21:18This very fast right-left combination.
21:21Look at this, look at this.
21:22So Baird.
21:23Hayes.
21:24Right up.
21:25Oh, I think Skate is going to protect him going into MG.
21:29Yeah, okay, right.
21:31The interesting bit is going to be you watch Baird.
21:33Oh, look at this.
21:34Oh, Radisic.
21:35Radisic.
21:35So Lowndes climbing all over the back of him.
21:38Now watch Baird in.
21:39Watch Baird because I'm sure if we can see them.
21:45Skate.
21:45Skate.
21:45Yep.
21:46Skate comes in.
21:47So Lowndes stays out there to battle the two forwards.
21:49Forward goes into the lead.
21:51Craig Baird from New Zealand.
21:53Paul Radisic from New Zealand.
21:54Craig Lowndes in third in the Holden.
21:55Look at the speed of that thing.
21:57Now starting to open.
21:58Yeah.
21:59Stretch the legs of the Pertec Falcon.
22:03See Leagues this one, but keep in mind all these guys
22:05have got to make their compulsory tyre change.
22:07Skate's the first man in.
22:08I see how quickly they can turn this around.
22:13I can so agree with these regulations that the country is only allowed to use two air guns.
22:18I don't understand.
22:18I agree with you, Mark.
22:19It's stupid because it just makes it look like they take forever to chair.
22:23Forever to change the tyres and the wheels.
22:27There's no sense in it because everybody's got four air guns anyway or, you know, enough to run.
22:31He escapes back out.
22:34I don't know what sort of tyre selection he had for this second half.
22:36Good morning, Jeff Gretchen.
22:38Maybe he wasn't that flash, but the man who's really been monstering this field is Tony Longhurst.
22:43Don't forget, he went out with a stripped gearbox in the opening lap of race one.
22:47He's got brand new fresh tyres.
22:49He's up to seventh position after starting off the back of the grid.
22:51And he's got another brand new tyres to go on.
22:54So, yeah, you'd have to put your money on Longhurst, wouldn't you, when you think about it?
22:58Because he's got a brand new set of boots to run.
23:00Now, for motorsport fans, don't forget RPM returns to Network 10 on Sunday the 19th of March.
23:06Between 2 and 3 p.m.
23:07You can catch up on all your motor racing actions.
23:09Oh, look at this.
23:10That is Lowndes down the inside of Paul Radisic.
23:13And very quickly, trackside as well.
23:15All the support race action from here and from some of the rounds at Barber Gallo, for example.
23:193 to 5 on the 26th of March.
23:21That was very good.
23:22That was amazing.
23:24So, that was intelligent driving from Lowndes in those opening laps.
23:28It looked like he was in tyre trouble.
23:30He may well have been.
23:30He may well have just backed off a little bit just to save them.
23:34Because the times are really pumping out there.
23:36Lowndes have done a 38.4 last time around.
23:39Well, what a game of tactics this is now turning out to be.
23:42We can see that Radisic and Lowndes have decided to stay out there.
23:45Tander is still out there as well.
23:46He's yet to fit.
23:48Now, here's Clay Thierry for his stop.
23:49The Stone Brothers operation.
23:50Swamp on this car.
23:53It's a very slick outfit, this.
23:55And this should be a pretty quick stop.
23:56And I'll be very keen to get back out there and resume this battle.
24:00Lap 16 at the moment.
24:05Oh, plenty of wheel spin as he comes out of the pits.
24:08So, Baird back into action.
24:10Lowndes still to make his tyre stop.
24:12Radisic still to make his.
24:13Thomas Mazira, even though he's a lap down in the gold car there,
24:16he's showing a lot of pace.
24:17Yeah, absolutely on the pace, isn't he?
24:20Right now, Garb Tander leads the way in the second race.
24:23Craig Lowndes, Paul Radisic, Paul wheel in for the fantastic effort.
24:26And Trevor Ashby in the top eight.
24:28More right after this.
24:29Welcome back to Villa-Violent.
24:41Bright, beautiful sunshine for race two.
24:44Round one of the Shell Championship Series for season 2000.
24:47That is car 34.
24:48Garb Tander is in the pits for his pit stop.
24:51And the Gary Rogers, Valvoline Cummins motorsport operation.
24:54All the boys are there.
24:55And was our race leader in the commercial break.
24:59Both the whole racing team, Commodores, came in for their tyre team.
25:02So did Craig Baird.
25:03So effectively, Baird now running 10th.
25:05All the cars in front of him yet to make their stops.
25:07Tander's just come in.
25:08So right at the moment.
25:10Tander's still got...
25:11Sorry to interrupt you.
25:13Tander's just gone out.
25:14And Craig Baird has just gone across the line there.
25:16Yeah, OK.
25:17This will be very interesting as they go down into the southern loop.
25:20If Tander's got enough speed here.
25:22Baird will be going incredibly quick from his run down the front straight.
25:24No, not close enough.
25:26Well, this is going to be the big test of chassis set-up,
25:28of tyre condition, of driving intelligence.
25:31He's gone now after that contact the other in the race.
25:35He's getting a tyre change as well.
25:36But effectively, Garth Tander continues to lead this race.
25:42He's gone in for his tyre change.
25:43Craig Baird coming up very close behind him in the Pertac Falcon.
25:48Lowndes and Scaife in hot pursuit.
25:50This could be a really thrilling finish.
25:54So now this has been quite a long stop for the Cat Falcon.
25:58He is back out there again.
25:59Here is what we believe is your race leader, Garth Tander.
26:02Of course, a lot of people pitting at the moment.
26:03Paul Will doing a fantastic job while he's driving.
26:07He gets a peg.
26:08But he's second place.
26:09Tander's sitting back in seventh place,
26:11but he is effectively our race leader
26:12because all the cars in front of him
26:14still get to make their tyre stop.
26:15Let's have a look at the replay.
26:16John Trimble.
26:17Oh, John Trimble, that is.
26:19Oh, look at that.
26:20Oh, dear.
26:21I wonder if anyone's going to get to.
26:22He's right in the middle of the track, too.
26:24Oh, nasty.
26:25Oh, Russell.
26:27Oh.
26:28Just stopped.
26:30That is not Russell's day.
26:31He was caught up in that tangle before
26:32with Paul Morris and John Bauer.
26:34Now, Convent's got some sort of problem as well.
26:36Look at the bonnet, the front right of that bonnet.
26:38Yeah, looks at the...
26:39Oh, you've got two auxiliary bonnet pins there.
26:42One of those pins hasn't locked in.
26:44Now, there's plenty of air coming up,
26:46and that's a dangerous situation.
26:47It is, because he can come up
26:48and just wake you in the wheelchair.
26:50This bloke has done nothing to deserve it.
26:52Spending him, I cannot believe it.
26:54Yeah, I saw him walk under...
26:55Thanks for Will just going up.
26:56I saw him walk under the stairs at the hotel this morning.
26:58That must have been him.
27:00Did he spill the salt as well?
27:02He is cursed.
27:03I've never said anything like this.
27:04Two stop-go penalties.
27:06Now, the bonnet's coming up.
27:08All right, Brad Jones, making his supercar.
27:11V8's supercar debut this season.
27:14And round one here at Phillip Island,
27:15the fabulous new Aussie male Falcon at the moment,
27:17under siege from Stephen Johnson.
27:20And going back through the field,
27:22he's a little bit further down, Bradley Jones,
27:23than he would like to be.
27:26We ride with him now inside the Aussie male Falcon.
27:29Yeah, this is a quality team.
27:31I'm pretty sure it's going to be hard going for Brad
27:33in season 2000,
27:35but they've got a lot of experience.
27:37And I think as the season progresses,
27:40they'll start to knock this car into shape.
27:42The Aussie male Falcon.
27:44Meanwhile, at the front of the pack,
27:46Radisic is getting monster.
27:47He's just on a 138.4.
27:49He's really going quite slowly now.
27:51The Shell team holding him out there.
27:52I wonder when they're going to start bringing him in,
27:54because he is losing all the time.
27:57Yeah, he's on his way in.
27:58Here he is.
28:00Is this Radisic?
28:01Indeed it is.
28:02You're riding out the front.
28:03OK.
28:04Yeah.
28:04Yeah, he's been losing a lot of time those tyres in the shot.
28:07Could have done with a couple of laps earlier,
28:09but it might do.
28:09Maybe he's bolted on stuff that's not even any better.
28:12Now the old female Falcon goes into the lead.
28:15We're just with Brad Jones.
28:16He's now leading the race.
28:17His moment of glory,
28:18before he makes his compulsory tyre change.
28:20Stephen Johnson behind him.
28:22And then comes Garth Tander,
28:24who has already made his stop.
28:26So effectively,
28:26although Tander's running third,
28:28he really is our race leader.
28:32He's having a tremendous battle
28:33with Craig Baird and the Pertec Falcon.
28:36Wow, Radisic has just exited pit lane.
28:38Looks as though Skape and Lowndes have just swung by as well,
28:40so this is going to be an enthralling battle.
28:42So there's our race leader,
28:44Aussie male Falcon.
28:44You just saw it in shot.
28:45Here's Paul Radisic.
28:46He's just come out of the pits.
28:49He was losing a lot of time
28:52with that old rubber on the car.
28:53Brad Jones still to make his stop.
28:5531 minutes into the race.
28:56Keep in mind,
28:57they have to stop before three-quarter distance.
29:00It's a timed race.
29:01It has to be effectively 34 minutes.
29:03They have to come in to make their tyre change.
29:06So we expect Brad Jones and Stephen Johnson
29:07just behind him in second place
29:09to come in very, very soon.
29:11If you look at the time that Tander and Baird are doing,
29:13they're within sort of five thousandths of each other time-wise.
29:18So Tander is three seconds in front of Baird at the moment.
29:22So the pit window is going to close very, very shortly for these two guys.
29:26They're very close to the entrance, in fact, to the pits this time around.
29:28Will they come in?
29:30Let's have a look and see if Stephen Johnson comes in this time around.
29:32Indeed he does.
29:33Brad Jones comes in as well.
29:34So running one and two effectively on the road,
29:37but these two haven't pitted.
29:38They're one of the last to do it.
29:40So they'll swing in for their compulsory pit stop now.
29:42Now we'll see the effective change in the lead,
29:44I would suggest, back to Garth Tander.
29:46Well, Tander was 14 seconds behind that leading duo
29:48when they came into pit lane.
29:50So we should see Garth Tander flash past.
29:51There he is in the background in the Valvolines Cummins Commodore.
29:55There's your new race leader, Tander.
29:57Takes over.
29:58And he is just about four seconds now in front of Crate Baird.
30:02Baird in pursuit.
30:033.3 seconds the gap.
30:05Stephen Johnson sitting in pit lane,
30:07patiently waiting for the new tyres to go into the Shell No. 17 Falcon.
30:11Both the Mobile Holden Racing Team Commodores flash by as well,
30:15so Scaife sits in third place,
30:16Crate Baird in fourth,
30:18and the Shell Hillocks Falcon gets dropped off the jacks,
30:20smokes the bags,
30:21and Stephen Johnson is back out and racing.
30:23Team manager Dean all clapping his hands there.
30:25I think he was happy with the speed of that stop.
30:28But here's our race leader, Garth Tander.
30:30He's been doing brilliantly this weekend.
30:32Well, Scaifey and Lounsey are 13,
30:34nearly 14 seconds behind Tander at the moment.
30:38Well, this is a tremendous result for the Gary Rogers team.
30:42Out of luck at Mount Panorama last year,
30:44caught up in that terrible accident,
30:45Forrest Elbow took the Bargwana Tander car out of commission
30:49very early in the race.
30:50But this is the battle.
30:50Forward and Holden.
30:52Once again,
30:53Peewee Craig Baird
30:54in his debut Shell Series drive for the Stone Brothers Ford team.
30:58He's doing a sensational job.
30:59Oh, look at the time that Tander's done.
31:0134-8 as against a 35-4.
31:05That's only three or four tenths away from lap record pace for Tander.
31:09So considering he's running a second-hand set of tyres,
31:11that is a phenomenal effort.
31:12It's a phenomenal effort also from Craig Baird.
31:14You've got to remember,
31:15this guy hasn't done very many laps here at Phillip Island.
31:17When I was talking to him on Friday,
31:19he mentioned one of the last times he was here
31:20was about three or four years ago
31:22doing some testing for BMW,
31:23let alone race miles,
31:25in a V8 supercar.
31:27Not going bad, isn't it?
31:29Exceptionally well.
31:29So let's check the split.
31:31This is the critical thing,
31:32the run to the flag.
31:3234 minutes gone.
31:33It's a 45-minute race.
31:35It's about five and a half minutes remaining.
31:37Can Baird close the gap.
31:383.2 seconds.
31:39He's only taken a tenth of a second
31:41off the lead of Tander.
31:42Tander's so quick in this car.
31:44These guys have got quite a gap as well
31:46on the Mobile Holden Racing Team duo
31:47who are just flashing across the line now.
31:50Stave in third and Lowndes in fourth.
31:52That is quite a decent gap.
31:54Well, that's a real turnaround from yesterday.
31:58Race one, where Lowndes was just so dominant.
32:01But now we've got onto some second-hand rubber.
32:04It's not quite working as well
32:06for the Holden Racing Team.
32:08Now, we're pretty sure just about everyone
32:09has completed their pit stops.
32:11We'll run you through the top ten.
32:12Garth Tanner, the 22-year-old,
32:13leads the field.
32:14Finished second yesterday.
32:15Leads things at the moment
32:16from Craig Baird, the Kiwi.
32:18Mark Scaife in third.
32:19You're watching him on screen at the moment.
32:20His teammate and defending champion
32:22Craig Lowndes is fourth.
32:23Seaton in fifth.
32:24That's a fantastic drive.
32:25Paul Radisic sixth.
32:26Larry Perkins, what about that?
32:28The 49-year-old sits in seventh place.
32:30Mark Larkin in eighth.
32:31Todd Kelly driving for the Holden Young Lions entry
32:33is ninth and Paul Will,
32:35a sensational effort in tenth place.
32:37Tony Longhurst continues his charge through the field.
32:40He's in eleventh at the moment.
32:42He's starting from the back of the grid.
32:43He's got nice stress rubber to use too.
32:45Paul Radisic in sixth position.
32:47So, 35 minutes down in this race.
32:54The pit window is now closed.
32:58And you're watching Paul Radisic on screen.
33:01Effectively, what many people believe, I guess,
33:03is a two-time world touring car champion.
33:06Effectively, he's won the Touring Car World Cup,
33:08I should say, twice.
33:10And had a rough introduction to touring car racing.
33:12He admits last year, but he is very, very keen
33:14to be on top of the podium this season.
33:16I think Larry Perkins must have passed him
33:19on that previous lap
33:19because the timing monitor is showing him ahead of Perkins.
33:22Perkins is in front of him on the track.
33:24So, I wonder if Larry got past the show car
33:26that time around.
33:26There's Larry.
33:27Tander's pulled out 0.2 of a second on Baird.
33:30So, he looks like he's got him under control.
33:32Yeah.
33:3335.43 for Tander in the Valvoline Cummins Commodore.
33:36A 35.63 for Baird.
33:37So, he's pulled two-tenths of a second on that lap.
33:41Looks like he's well in control.
33:42They've got a great set-up on this Valvoline machine
33:44this weekend.
33:49Word through is that everyone has stopped
33:51during the allotted time.
33:52So, no-one will be copying any penalties
33:53for stopping inside or outside, I should say,
33:56the pit window.
33:58There's Tony Longhurst, the 42-year-old goal coaster.
34:02And after 12 years of managing his own team,
34:04he's enjoying the beauty of not having to run it anymore.
34:07And having a great run in the Stones Brothers Racing
34:10or the Caltechs Falcon, we should call it.
34:14Yeah, he's walking around,
34:15doesn't know what to do with himself now
34:17because after running his own team for so long,
34:19you get so involved with it.
34:22He's trying something a little bit different this weekend, too.
34:25Oh, Craig Lowndes!
34:26That's Craig Lowndes!
34:27Goodness me!
34:28Oh, it looks like it's cooked itself.
34:30You see the smoke just coming up the front.
34:31Yeah, it's interesting.
34:33Undoes the belts and that's it for the day.
34:34Well, Lowndes is heading for a victory there.
34:37Just doing our sons.
34:39He was looking very, very strong to be on the top of the podium
34:41this afternoon, but that's all gone out the window.
34:44I wonder what's happened there.
34:45It's a nice...
34:46Yeah, under the bottom.
34:48It looks like it's boiling because that's steam, isn't it?
34:51It's against smoke.
34:52So some sort of mechanical problem for Craig Lowndes.
34:55What a surprise.
34:55That's a very rare failure indeed from the Holden Racing team.
35:00Gee, you don't see that very often.
35:01So checking with Jeff Breckers to see exactly what went wrong.
35:05It's steam, not smoke.
35:06Well, big shot.
35:13Garth Tander, your leader, from Craig Baird.
35:15Mark Scape in third place.
35:16Lowndes, of course, has retired.
35:18Glenn Seton in fifth place.
35:19Larry Burke at sixth.
35:20Paul Radish in seventh.
35:21And Mark Larkham rounds out the top eight.
35:23More right after this.
35:27We are counting down to the end of the second race
35:30in round one of the 2000 Shell Championship Series.
35:33Just minutes to go.
35:34Garth Tander leading things,
35:35but Craig Baird is chipping away.
35:37The gap is now just down to a little bit over three seconds.
35:40But time, though, is running out.
35:43Yeah, I don't think that Baird can do it.
35:46Oh, here's a replay.
35:48Oh.
35:48Yeah, that's...
35:50That's a ruptured radio.
35:51Yeah, it looks like it's steam.
35:52It's definitely not smoke
35:53because it looks like the thing's just sort of blown something.
35:57It could have blown something as easy as a hose.
35:59You never know, but it's definitely not a loader.
36:02Someone we should also point out
36:03doing exceptionally well at the moment
36:05from 22nd place up to fifth
36:07is Larry Perkins.
36:09Sensational effort.
36:10His son Jack with us in the commentary box here.
36:14And very impressed with his dad's performance right now.
36:16Garth Tander guides it on to pitch straight once again.
36:223.0 seconds.
36:24We'll check this split as they come across the line.
36:26Time running out for Craig Baird.
36:27And there is Castrol Commodore of Larry Perkins.
36:30This is a very...
36:32Oh, 1.49 seconds Baird's got it down to.
36:36Yep.
36:36And we've got another, what, how many more laps?
36:38Say four minutes.
36:39Three more laps.
36:40So we could be looking good for him.
36:43Yep.
36:43Baird has closed it big time in the Perthex board.
36:47Once under one and a half seconds now.
36:48The battle for the league.
36:49Won't he be a popular chap with Ford if he can put it off?
36:52Well, there'll be plenty of Ford fans with their fingers crossed.
36:55They had an absolutely dismal season last year.
36:57Very nice to kick off 2,000 with a win.
37:00Not to mention Ford boss Jeff Pilates who's here this weekend.
37:02No doubt he'd be fingers crossed for a victory.
37:04This is Paul Wheel giving a big hurry up to Mark Larko.
37:07We're riding out of the back of the minor 10 Ford Falcon.
37:10And the youngster from Queensland doing a really good job at the moment.
37:13Oh, touching there.
37:15So Wheel giving Larko the hurry up.
37:17He's down and he's going to get it from the inside.
37:19Yes.
37:19That's a good move.
37:20Good move.
37:21He's on the bright side.
37:22Oh, that's quick.
37:24This new car that the team has built, Keys Wheel, Paul's father, is so impressed with this.
37:28They've spent a lot of time on it.
37:29They sold their old car to Cameron McLean.
37:31They've really revised the way they've done the engineering on this car from the old one.
37:36And they're very impressed with how it's going.
37:37Such a good little driver though, isn't he?
37:38He is, yeah.
37:39Flyer.
37:40Now get him his car to Radisic now.
37:42Former Supercross motorcycle racer and a former stadium truck racer.
37:46He's had a lot of off-road experience.
37:49Oh, there's a close he goes.
37:50Radisic.
37:51Oh, I'd say Radisic struggling a bit here under this pressure from Wheel.
37:57Look how close he got to the show of Ford on a couple of occasions around that time.
38:02It's a flyer, isn't it?
38:03Wheel is very fired up.
38:05Look at Todd Kelly coming under pressure in the background there from Tony Longhurst.
38:08Tandem.
38:10Tandem to Baird.
38:11Tandem's a lead.
38:11Tandem's a lead.
38:12So Craig Baird, we have a new race leader here at Phillip Island.
38:16Craig Baird has gone through that.
38:17Garth Tandem.
38:18So the Kiwi in a Ford leads race two here at the Island and time is fast running out.
38:24I would suggest maybe Garth's tyres perhaps are going by the wayside.
38:27There's such a gap there already.
38:28He's trapping back so quickly now.
38:30Well, his last lap time was a 1.38.37 and a 36.8.
38:35So he's taken two seconds off the Valvoline machine in that one lap.
38:38Maybe, though, you never know.
38:39Could have been some trapping.
38:40Yeah, could have been some trapping.
38:41Could have been a bit of a mistake by Garth.
38:43I don't know, you know.
38:44Oh, for a wheel.
38:46No.
38:46Oh, you can't believe it.
38:49Oh, well.
38:50Well, he needs to keep it out of the bunker.
38:52That's one thing.
38:52Everything was going so well for him.
38:54Skate now.
38:55And Seaton, Seaton, this is the battle for third place.
38:58And Seaton is all over the back of Skate.
39:01So possibly we might have two Fords here inside the top three.
39:04Right at the critical end of the day, the Fords are coming on gangbusters.
39:07Glenn Seaton putting plenty of pressure on Mark Skate.
39:11The last remaining Holden Racing Team Commodore.
39:13Apart from Tom Kelly, of course, he's running back at ninth
39:17with his teammate Craig Lowndes out of the action.
39:20Skate fighting hard for a podium position here.
39:22Tandor will still win the day if he finishes second.
39:26But Ben, he can get a first up win for Ford in 2000.
39:30Skate right over the right-hand side of this.
39:32He's making him do a target there.
39:33Absolutely.
39:34He is really sliding around.
39:36Oh, Skate, his tyres are absolutely shot.
39:40You see how much Glenn was gaining.
39:41And it's going to be interesting to see horsepower-wise down the straight here.
39:45If Glenn can get close enough, OK.
39:47We are at the 44-minute mark.
39:48So this is the beginning of the last lap, we are told.
39:50This is the beginning of the last lap.
39:52On to the front straight for the final time.
39:54A happy hunting ground for Glenn Seaton in the past.
39:57Can he get on the podium this afternoon?
39:59Gee, he's close.
39:59But Skate doing a sensational job in third place at the moment.
40:03He's riding it right on the line.
40:04Skate is making it very tough to see, darling.
40:06I tell you what, if Glenn could get through there, you'd call him Udini, wouldn't you, really?
40:09It's definitely going to make it tough on him.
40:11This is going to be a big test of Mark Skate's skill and his ability to handle this pressure.
40:17He's driving a car that is seriously running out of grip.
40:20He's got to try and hold a car in behind him.
40:22It's going very, very quickly.
40:23Look at this lead from Craig Baird.
40:242.8 seconds.
40:25There's the battle for third between Seaton and Skate.
40:29Seaton goes right out wide.
40:30He's going to try and cut across on the inside on the X at the 100, but Skate's wise to the move.
40:35Skate is driving right down the middle of the road.
40:38He's quite illegally allowed to do that.
40:41I bet there's a few smiling faces in the Stone Brothers garage at the moment.
40:46Is there what?
40:47That's not a bad debut for Ben, is it?
40:50Seaton was mentioning yesterday that his car had very, very good tyres at the end of yesterday.
40:54He's racing was coming on strong then.
40:56Look at how strong he's coming on now with corners fast running out for Mark Skate.
41:00Can he hold on to third place?
41:02Up and over Lukey Heights.
41:03Yeah, see Skate blocks that option.
41:05He knew Seaton would have tried to dive down the inside.
41:09So we're getting set for the run home to the checkered flag for Craig Baird.
41:12Checkered flag is at the ready.
41:13This is the battle for third place at the moment.
41:17And Craig Baird, the 29-year-old, on debut in the Shell Championship Series, takes out race two.
41:22Well done to Stone Brothers Racing.
41:24The perfect forward operation.
41:26Very deserving winners.
41:27And this is the battle for third place.
41:28It's going to go right to the line.
41:30Skate holds it.
41:31Just, just holds it from Glenn Seaton who will take fourth place.
41:36Shouldn't take anything away either from young Garth Tander.
41:39Two starts, two second places.
41:41That's a brilliant start to the championship.
41:42Great drive from Tander.
41:43Excellent drive.
41:44Now, word through also is, we've just done the count back, Tander has won the day.
41:48So two second places.
41:49Well done to Garth Tander.
41:50The 22-year-old, Kay's girlfriend won the Formula Ford race.
41:54Leanne Ferrier, she did.
41:56Two starts, two wins in the Formula Ford.
41:58And the first female ever to win a Formula Ford race in Australia.
42:02But that's great stuff.
42:02Craig Baird wins race two.
42:04Garth Tander takes out the day.
42:06A sensational performance.
42:07Oh, amazing.
42:08That was good, you know.
42:09I felt sorry for up to see.
42:10There was no way he was going to get past Skate, he was there.
42:12He drew absolutely everything out of him for the run to the line.
42:15Let's quickly recap them for you.
42:17Craig Baird is your winner from Garth Tander.
42:18Mark Skate in third place.
42:20Glenn Seaton in fourth.
42:21Larry Perkins in fifth place.
42:23Radisic sixth.
42:24Larkins seventh.
42:25Tony Longhurst recovered for eighth place.
42:27That's great stuff.
42:27Todd Kelly ninth.
42:28And Stephen Richards, the Mathis winner, finishes in tenth place.
42:34Good job also by Larry Perkins.
42:36We'll check the entire race score for you in just a few moments.
42:39We'll go right through how everyone finished here at the island.
42:41There it is.
42:42Craig Baird, your winner in race two from Garth Tander.
42:45The round winner.
42:46Round one winner here at Phillip Island.
42:48Mark Skate home third.
42:49Seaton fourth.
42:50A good job by Larry in fifth place.
42:51Tony Longhurst in eighth place on the end of race two.
42:55Todd Kelly ninth.
42:56Sensational performance from Dougal McDougal in eleventh place.
42:59A good consistent effort from him right across the weekend.
43:01John Faulkner, despite some back problems, finishing in 14th place.
43:05Brad Jones, supercar to Boo in 17th in race two.
43:08Steve Reid, Neil Crompton in 23rd.
43:10Trevor Ashby, 24.
43:18Good on you, mate.
43:19And victory for Craig Baird.
43:23Well deserved too.
43:24Getting the congratulations from the Stone Brothers outfit there.
43:27Fantastic.
43:28Let's check the results of race two for you.
43:29Craig Baird from Garth Tander.
43:31Some other movers for you.
43:32Larry Perkins from outside the top 20 to fifth.
43:35Tony Longhurst from the back of the grid to the eighth.
43:37To eighth position, I should say.
43:38And Neil Crompton, a disastrous run for him.
43:40Two stop go penalties.
43:42But right now on the podium with our winners and place getters here at Phillip Island is Mark
43:45Oestler.
43:47Well, a very exciting start to the 2000 Shell Championship Series.
43:51Honours shared between Ford and Holden.
43:53But the honours going to Holden overall on the day.
43:56Now a great heart for the Ford fans today.
43:58We saw a fantastic performance from the new Kiwi joining the Stone Brothers racing outfit.
44:03Put your hands together for Craig Baird.
44:05Now that is one hell of a way to start your V8 supercar campaign.
44:13Yeah, obviously I'm just wrapped, you know, wrapped for Ford, wrapped for Pertec.
44:16And Ross and Jimmy for giving me a crack in the car.
44:19It's, you know, it was just fantastic to get a gig after a year off last year.
44:23To all the Ford fans out there, or actually to all the fans, thanks for coming.
44:26And it's just great for Ford to have a race win at the first round.
44:30I'm just so excited about it.
44:31It's just fantastic.
44:33It really was a battle of tactics out there.
44:34It seemed tyres played a crucial role in that final stint.
44:37Oh, for sure.
44:38You know, we battled the tyres yesterday.
44:40And my engineer, Paul Seppernich, did a fantastic job.
44:43You know, this morning we were having small arguments.
44:45Here we go this way, that way.
44:46But, you know, he was right and gave me a fantastic car.
44:49And I just drove it home.
44:50Congratulations, Craig Baird.
44:51I'm sure we'll see a lot more of him in Season 2000.
44:54Second place today.
44:54We saw his teammate go out in very unexpected style with some sort of engine failure.
44:58But bringing it home for Holden Racing Team, put your hands together for Markscape.
45:04That was pretty spectacular watching in those final laps.
45:08It looked like you had no tyres left at all.
45:10I wouldn't say they were in the best of shape.
45:12I reckon they've got that used look about them for sure.
45:14And so they got to me, but I mean, he was really fair about it.
45:16Like, there's two laps to go and I made it the widest Holden of all time.
45:20And, I mean, he was, as I said, pretty fair.
45:22He didn't do too much wrong with it.
45:23And it was a really good race.
45:24I mean, really good effort with the guys.
45:26Our first weekend together.
45:27And it was probably one of the hardest weekends we've had.
45:29We haven't really had the car that good.
45:30And certainly in the last race, it was a bit better.
45:32Congratulations, Markscape.
45:33Second place and a great way to start his campaign.
45:36Right now, I'd like to call on Ross Brodie, Motorsport Manager for Shell,
45:38to make the award to our winner.
45:40He's a bit of a star, this kid.
45:4122-year-old Garth Tander.
45:43That was fantastic.
45:49You've obviously been working very closely with your crew
45:51in terms of getting the chassis set up right
45:53because the car looked very good and it was obviously quick.
45:55Yeah, the guys did a great job.
45:57Cos, Johnny, Pete and all the other guys that worked down in our place
46:00did a fantastic job.
46:01The car was great.
46:03That first stint in our tyres just seemed like they were going to go forever.
46:05I didn't really want to come in and stop.
46:06But our guys did a great job.
46:09We sort of used our tyres a bit towards the end,
46:11which is a bit unfortunate.
46:12I'll bet I got through, but it would have been nice to win one.
46:15But to win the what day and start the series with a bag load of points is great.
46:19Thanks to our sponsors, Valvoline, Cummins and Holden.
46:22And roll on the next one.
46:23Put your hands together, folks.
46:24Garth Tander, the winner of the opening round of the Shell Series for 2000.
46:31That is two years in a row of the opening round
46:33that Mark Osler has been hosed with the champagne.
46:35He's got to learn to run a little bit quicker.
46:37Garth Tander leads the championship after the first round on 108 points.
46:40Mark Scaife is just six points in arrears and Craig Baird third on 93 points.
46:45Glenn Seaton is up there, which is terrific stuff.
46:46Craig Lowndes in seventh place, the defending champion.
46:49And Neil Crompton, despite his woes late in the day, is in 10th place on 48 points.
46:54Well, Barry Sheen, championship is well and truly wide open.
46:57It's only the opening round, 12 to go.
46:59Really amazing.
46:59I have to say it really made a nice change for a Ford to win.
47:03And I reckon this year we're going to have even more competitive than ever.
47:07And if you look at it, all of the weekend, the engineers have been working to try and get the tyres to work with the chassis and everything.
47:12I think it's great.
47:14We've got the best V8 series, the best touring car series in the world.
47:18I mean, they're all copying us now in Germany, so it's got to be good.
47:20Absolutely, no doubt about that.
47:21Well, a feast of golfing action still set to come your way here on Network 10.
47:25All right, the Cannon Challenge, of course, is coming up.
47:28Peter Senior and New Zealand sensation Michael Campbell, a terrific line-up of golfers, will be at the Castle Hill Golf Course for that one.
47:34After five years, it returns to Castle Hill.
47:36Kari Webb and all the girls are back in Australia for the Australian Ladies Masters of Royal Pines and Royal Canberra,
47:41the venue for the final round of the PGA Championship.
47:43We're off to Barbara Gallo for round two of the Shell Championship Series.
47:47That is mid-March.
47:48It's Larry's 50th birthday on the Saturday over there, so join us for that one.
47:51And, of course, the V8 Light Series, a five-round championship,
47:54kicking off at Eastern Creek Raceway in New South Wales late in March.
47:57Well, we trust you've enjoyed all the action here from Phillip Island this weekend.
48:00That about wraps it up.
48:01We look forward to your company at Barbara Gallo in about a month's time.
48:04On behalf of Barry Sheen, Mark Osler and all the hard-working team here at Phillip Island,
48:07it's bye for now.
48:08Another angle.
48:09Oh, look at this.
48:13Oh, that is doing my legal stuff.
48:16Oh, thank you.
48:18It's about the safety car at Oval.
48:25Oh, he's not a happy jappy.
48:27Oh, he wants to rip into John Briggs, too.
48:30Oh, no, he's come off.
48:32Oh, his car's going.
48:33There must be something on the road.
48:41Oh, go on tight.
48:43Whoa.
48:44Oh, big crash here.
48:55Oh, big crash here.
48:55Danny Osborne and the color-skinned Culkin.
48:57Oh, look at that.
49:00He is severely alive.
49:02Oh, look at that.
49:05Oh, no.
49:06Oh, me.
49:06Oh, my God.
49:11Oh, my God.
49:12Mate.
49:14Oh, there's been a blade.
49:16There's a blade here.
49:17Oh, my God.
49:17Oh, my God.
49:17Oh, my God.
