01:31Hello everyone, I'm Greg Rust and this is round two of the Shell Championship Series.
01:36And despite the Bureau's prediction of rain, a huge crowd is on hand here.
01:39They're still streaming through the turnstiles even as we speak
01:42and they're eager to see all the action that's going to be on show here in WA today.
01:46Well, the championship point score after one of 13 rounds looks like this.
01:50Garth Tander, top of the table on 108 points.
01:52The Local A's keen to do well again here today.
01:55Marks gave just six points in her ears.
01:57Then it's a pack of hungry four drivers.
01:59Baird, Seton, Radisic and Larkham.
02:00The defending champion Craig Lowndes in seventh place at the moment.
02:03And I can tell you also Russell Ingleby in Forza.
02:06No points on the board thus far.
02:08Well, Barbagallo can be a place that can be really quite tough on drivers.
02:12And one of the legends of motorsport found out last year just how tough it can be.
02:16Looks like a fairly even running for him.

02:45no, we won't expect you to do that at all, mate.
02:47Now, I guess first and foremost, you're the team manager this year.
02:50How are you enjoying things on this side of pit lane?
02:53Well, it's quite a bit different, I can assure you.
02:55And a lap time takes an awful lot longer behind the fence than what it does on the racetrack.
02:59All right, we'll get some special comments from you in just a few moments' time.
03:01It has been a fairly controversial week in the lead-up to Barbagallo.
03:05For those of you that may not have seen it,
03:06Neil Crompton was involved in a huge shunt in the support races
03:09to the Australian Formula One Grand Prix.
03:11Now, they have repaired the Ford Tickford Racing Falcon.
03:13He's racing this weekend.
03:15But Paul Morris, for his part in that crash,
03:17copped a $10,000 fine
03:18and was actually excluded from racing here at Barbagallo.
03:21He's since successfully appealed that decision and will be racing.
03:24The official's move is something that's lived at Crompton.
03:27He got away with it scot-free,
03:30so we'll just have to wait and see what cams do about that now on an internal basis.
03:34But it sends a very bad message to all competitors
03:37that you can behave like a thug and get away with it.
03:40I was quite within my rights to appeal.
03:42I had my appeal heard by an independent tribune,
03:45and I think they've made a fair and just decision.
03:47And if Neil or if anyone is not happy with the rules,
03:51well, maybe we should try and do something to change it.
03:54But you can only play by the rules that are put forward at the time.
03:57Well, there you go, Dick.
03:58I guess you've heard both sides of the equation there.
04:00What do you think about it?
04:01Well, once again, Greg, I think it shows
04:03that the inefficiency of the very antiquated cams judicial system.
04:07And when you get lawyers involved in these things,
04:09they get out on technicalities.
04:11And as Neil said, it's sending the wrong message to the competitors.
04:14Well, let's hope we're not going to give the lawyers any more money today.
04:17Qualifying, though, yesterday was held in bright, beautiful sunshine.
04:20In fact, quite warm conditions.
04:21And that didn't hinder the pace of Mark Scaife.
04:23He walked away with pole position and a new qualifying lap record.
04:27Craig Lowndes, his old racing teammate,
04:28will start alongside him on the front row.
04:30We go further back.
04:31Russell Ingle, Garth Tander on row two.
04:33Jason Barguana in there as well.
04:35And Mark Largham has confounded the bookies
04:37with that sensational time at the fastest forward driver.
04:40Well, after qualifying yesterday,
04:41Mark Osler caught up with our pole sitter.
04:43Well, Barbagallo Raceway has proved to be a happy hunting ground
04:46for the Holden racing team over the last few years.
04:49Not only has Craig Lowndes got an unbeaten record here in the races,
04:52but by taking his pole position,
04:54Mark Scaife now makes it six pole positions in a row
04:56for the factory Holden team.
04:57You blokes have got a love affair with this place.
04:59You know too many statistics, don't you?
05:02Yeah, look, I mean, the cars have always gone really well here
05:04for whatever reason.
05:05I mean, in yesteryear when we had Bridgestone tyres
05:06and probably a lot of the other teams didn't have,
05:09there was a reasonable, you know, opportunity to have an advantage.
05:11But now that it's on a control tyre,
05:13obviously the car, based on everyone using the same tyre,
05:16is obviously working really well.
05:17Now the big question today is,
05:19can you knock Craig Lowndes off in the races?
05:22Well, obviously he's had a great record here
05:24and he's the sort of guy that he looks after the tyre very well
05:27because, you know, obviously the record shows it.
05:29But in these cars, they're so powerful with small tyres
05:32that his record shows that he's very good at it.
05:35I think our car at the moment
05:37probably is a bit better race car than it was in qualifying
05:40and I'd like to think that we'll be there in the hunt.
05:42If we make a reasonable start, we'll be okay.
05:44Tremendous competition between you two.
05:46You're so close.
05:47It is.
05:48I mean, it doesn't matter what it is.
05:49I mean, if it's a test day or a race day
05:51or a qualifying session or whatever,
05:52we want to beat each other badly.
05:53But I mean, it's healthy
05:54and the rivalry is fantastic for both of us and the team.

05:58All right, let's take a look at the Barba Gallo layout.
06:01Almost 2.5km in length, plenty of undulation here
06:04and it's characterised, of course, by that main straight
06:06that runs both up and downhill.
06:08To talk you through the finer points,
06:10here's Neil Crompton in the FTR Falcon
06:11with a forward inside line.
06:18Greg, this is one of the greatest little tracks in Australia.
06:21Wateroo Park, 2.41km.
06:24A track that's surrounded by the world's biggest sand trap.
06:28This is third one.
06:29Around about 90km an hour, third gear,
06:32up to these very fast and exciting S's
06:34where you really toss the car from side to side in fourth gear.
06:38Back to third for this constant radius,
06:40uphill, positive camber corner
06:42where you crest the brow here.
06:46About 170-odd k's.
06:49Plunge down the other side.
06:50It's a beautiful view,
06:51although you don't get much of a chance to look at it.
06:53Hard on the brakes.
06:53A couple of bumps.
06:55Back to third gear.
06:56This is turn six, cold corner.
06:58Now, this is a tricky one
06:59because the left rear tyre
07:00fries and dies at this track.
07:03You can feel the car squirming around
07:05as you use all the road on the exit.
07:07Have a look in the mirror.
07:08Check out the traffic.
07:09Fifth gear.
07:10Sixth gear very briefly.
07:11And then super hard on the brakes.
07:14Back to third gear.
07:15It's a bit of an uphill gradient
07:16so you can really brake late.
07:18Bit of a slip and a slide.
07:19Up onto the ripple strip for the exit.
07:21Fourth and then fifth gear.
07:22It's a track that if you make a blue,
07:25you end up in the sand and it's all over
07:26and you can look a little tomato red.
07:28And I have done it once or twice.
07:30Let's hope he doesn't do it today.

09:43Well, it certainly is.
09:45I can tell you that they did a fantastic job.
09:47You know, they've obviously dominated
09:48in qualifying in this particular racetrack
09:51for a number of years now.
09:53And to see five Commodores
09:55and then you've got six Falcons.
09:57So, obviously, there's a little bit more
09:59to be done with the Fords, I'd suggest.

10:39Well, he certainly is.
10:41Like, Paul's one guy
10:42who certainly doesn't need any pumping up,
10:44I can tell you.
10:45He gives everything 110%.
10:47And it's amazing because, you know,
10:50sometimes when Paul gets out of the car,
10:52he looks like a round rat, so to speak.
10:55But at the end of the day,
10:56as I said, he puts in 110%.
10:58And it's just a pity we can't put
11:00120 litres in a 100-litre tank.
11:02So you'll be on board

11:11And Bradley a lot further down the grid
