00:00This is probably the biggest fish we will ever see in our lives, if we can get it to the boat.
00:11Two friends.
00:12I'm glad you give me the head end.
00:14On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:17Lovely fish.
00:18Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:20That is the greatest fishing moment of my life.
00:23And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:25Oh, yeah!
00:27Oh, he's got it!
00:29We're kicking off in the Great British Isles.
00:32Look at that coastline.
00:34Visiting some of its most iconic angling venues.
00:37It's more like the Copacabana.
00:39Living it up Bankside.
00:41This is incredible. Ours is not looking like that, is it?
00:44And we'll be catching some of Britain's biggest and best fish.
00:48Wow. UK, thank you.
00:50Got my new PB.
00:52Big Al.
00:53This is the Grand Fishing Adventure.
00:57Check.
01:00You're an absolute wrong-un, mate.
01:02Look at that coastline.
01:03I think the UK, and the sort of changing ocean, and climate and everything, means that we're
01:05going to be the best.
01:06We're going to be the best.
01:07We're going to be the best.
01:08Good old Blighty is getting some good old big fish in its waters.
01:13If we could get one nice shark of a decent size, I'll be over the moon.
01:18Just to see it, really.
01:19Well, we were going to put my theory to the test.
01:21We were in North Devon at the coastal town of Ilfracoon.
01:25The reason we travelled all the way here was simple.
01:26Sharks.
01:27Off the Devon and Cornwall coasts.
01:28Off the Devon and Cornwall coasts.
01:29We were in North Devon.
01:30We were in North Devon at the coastal town of Ilfracoon.
01:34The reason we travelled all the way here was simple.
01:35Sharks.
01:36Off the Devon and Cornwall coasts.
01:37Due to the warming sea temperatures and the North Atlantic drift.
01:38Many large sharks patrol these waters.
01:39Often more than the wind.
01:40The wind is getting some good old big fish in its waters.
01:41If we could get one nice shark of a decent size, I'll be over the moon.
01:42Just to see it, really.
01:43Well, we were going to put my theory to the test.
01:47We were in North Devon at the coastal town of Ilfracoon.
01:51The reason we travelled all the way here was simple.
01:54Sharks.
01:55Off the Devon and Cornwall coasts.
01:57Due to the warming sea temperatures and the North Atlantic drift.
02:01Many large sharks patrol these waters.
02:03Often more commonly in the summer months.
02:06These apex predators include blues.
02:08Whore beagles.
02:09Freshers.
02:10Makos.
02:11And very recently even hammerheads.
02:14And commonly the bigger fish always tend to be female.
02:17Just like Jaws.
02:20For me to look back at this trip in Ilfracoon.
02:24I'd love to know that I've landed.
02:26Ticked a big sea monster from the UK.
02:30It's something I've never done.
02:31Listen, if I can catch a 400 pounder.
02:33Ali accidentally fall overboard.
02:35Maybe lose an arm and a leg.
02:36That would be a perfect day.
02:38Ah, thanks partner.
02:39So the mission of a 400 pound plus shark was set.
02:43Time to hook up with local shark expert and red hot skipper, Dan Hawkins.
02:47This is my skipper that's going to catch us the big sharks!
02:51Are you going to make it happen or what?
02:54Let's go mate.
02:55Let's make it work.
02:56Let's go mate.
02:57We're going to make it work.
02:58Let's go.
02:59Time to hit the high seas and get this shark show on the road.
03:02Since the commercial fishing ban in 2010, it's become harder to collect data on sharks in areas off the shore of the UK.
03:18So in fact, information gathered from local skippers helps international regulatory bodies, the UK government and has become incredibly useful in terms of understanding our shark populations.
03:31We headed 25 miles off the coast to a reef with depths around 100 feet, a sanctuary for bait fish, but also potential jaws territory.
03:42Once we'd arrived at the fishing location, Dan the skipper got to work prepping and laying a chum trail.
03:48Frozen blocks of fish bits and blood, which is put in a floating container with holes that's tied to the boat.
03:55The flow breaks up the chum and it slowly trickles out in the current, eventually drifting for several miles.
04:01The trail is picked up by the sharks, but also smaller bait fish, which stimulates the sharks into feeding and hunting.
04:09Always exciting at sea when you're going to get that first bit of flesh in the water.
04:14Mega, right Dan, talk us through it.
04:16So here we have a bottle.
04:18Yep.
04:19What does the bottle do?
04:20So we're going to use that as a float to suspend the baits below at a set depth.
04:24Yeah, lovely, nice and simple.
04:26So that's it.
04:27Bottle, weight, very, very caveman-esque, a dead mackerel with a hook and a little teaser as well.
04:34You said that these particular sharks love a bit of attraction.
04:38They get teased in, do they?
04:39Yeah, yeah.
04:40So you can aggravate them.
04:41So you want to try and aggravate them with the muppet colours.
04:43They're very inquisitive, so get them involved with something that's going to make them go.
04:48And the size of these sharks that we could be catching?
04:51So you can get anything from 65 to 500.
04:54You can play the four 500 pound.
04:57Yeah, that's my gym workout for the week, that's for sure.
05:00Each bait was put out at different depths varying between 20 and 80 feet and six rods in total.
05:08We now had to wait for the chum to hopefully work its magic.
05:15The boat wasn't anchored but was slowly drifting on the light current.
05:20We'd decided Bob would be first up on the rods.
05:23After an hour, the seagulls that had been calmly chilling around the boat started to become agitated.
05:40There's something out there because of the noises as well that they're making.
05:46So they're a good indicator that things are going on.
05:49They won't settle properly.
05:51There's a shark in town.
05:53I could smell it, it just feels about right.
05:55You sometimes get a feeling in your fishing waters when you know it's on like Donkey Kong.
06:01We're on, Bobby, Bobby.
06:09Yeah, I'm here pal, I'm here.
06:11There he is, he's there, he's on.
06:14Just see how it goes a minute.
06:17He hadn't even realised it's hooked yet so he's just going to take off to the left by the look of it.
06:21Here he goes, now he knows.
06:23Just holding tight, first 10, 15, there we go.
06:26Go on, Bobby.
06:28It went from zero to total carnage in seconds.
06:33The other rods needed to come in to avoid any dangerous tangles with the fish.
06:37Camera crew were everywhere, including yours truly.
06:42It's happened.
06:43We didn't think it was going to happen, it was all quiet.
06:45Wait, wait.
06:46So we're letting the pebble, the poor man's rock, play, get these biceps into work.
06:51As you can see, I'm holding a camera because I would love to get some underwater footage of the shark.
06:57The shark was staying deep and close to the boat.
07:01Right down the back, Bobby.
07:02Right down the back, mate.
07:04That's it.
07:05Bob couldn't let it go directly under the boat for fear of getting cut off.
07:08So quickly, he had to move around the boat in an attempt to keep in direct contact.
07:14You're feeling good now, Bobby.
07:16This is what you live for, isn't it?
07:18It is, pal.
07:19Come alive properly now.
07:20Yeah?
07:21I didn't think it was that big or that powerful a fish.
07:24I mean, I'm eating two veg.
07:26I'm taking the pounding.
07:28Look at that real goat.
07:33Fizz-a-rama.
07:34There's the bottle.
07:35It got bottle here.
07:36Oh, is it?
07:37Oh, right.
07:38I'm getting the camera on.
07:39I want to see this.
07:42This is good.
07:43This is so exciting.
07:45Oh, yeah.
07:46I can see it.
07:4710, 15 feet.
07:48I can see it.
07:49Wrapped, isn't it?
07:50It's wrapped now.
07:51Yeah, it's wrapped.
07:52Let me get it unwrapped.
07:53It's wrapped.
07:54It's wrapped.
07:55The shark had unfortunately got itself tangled in the wire trace, so Bob's only option was
08:00to carefully bring it in backwards.
08:02This was not an ideal situation.
08:04I did not think that they get that big.
08:08I might have to get this one in.
08:12You would never normally get a shark of this size on the boat.
08:15You'd always unhook it in the water.
08:17But for fish safety, we were going to attempt to get it on board to free it from the twisted
08:22wire trace around its tail.
08:24The shark made another lunge.
08:26We prayed the braid would hold as we really needed to get it on the boat.
08:30Bob managed to gently coax it back up to the surface.
08:33Dan the skipper had a lasso ready to slip around its tail so he could safely get it on board.
08:39As soon as I can, Bobby, if you can just swing to me just a little bit.
08:42Yeah.
08:43Like that.
08:44That's perfect.
08:45That's your fish, Bob.
08:46Well done, mate.
08:47I'll take the tension on a bit, mate.
08:49Oh.
08:50Yeah, then lift up.
08:51Lift up.
08:52Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:53Got you.
08:54Got you.
08:55The lasso was safely on.
08:56Well done, Skip.
08:57What you don't want is this being shown when he comes in.
09:02Not massive, but he's a good fish.
09:05Right, that'll do.
09:06Keep his head there.
09:08Great skills from the boat crew.
09:10The poor beagle was safely on board and the lads wasted no time freeing the wire.
09:15A quick look before we got into position to release it.
09:18I'm glad you give me the head end.
09:20I always wanted to lose a finger or an arm or something.
09:24Like sandpaper and all, innit?
09:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:26So rough.
09:27Crazy.
09:28Put it down and put it back.
09:29Yeah, just let us slide.
09:30Let him slide nose first straight out your hands.
09:32Watch it.
09:33Watch it.
09:34I'm slipping.
09:35I'm slipping.
09:36The shark was unharmed, still very lively, as we gently lowered it back into its watery
09:40world.
09:41Boom.
09:42Boom.
09:43Well done.
09:44Well done, mate.
09:45You enjoyed that?
09:46Yeah.
09:47That's unbelievable.
09:48Mega fish, super strong.
09:49Getting it on the boat as well.
09:50I mean, it's not saying that we wanted to do, but the tail was wrapped.
09:52It was saying that we had to do.
09:53But picking it up and feeling it, knowing that it's all muscle.
09:57Every single piece of that, that shark, is all muscle, all power.
10:01Gym session done.
10:02Good luck.
10:03Mate, that's just a warm up.
10:04I don't know what you're all about.
10:05Think of things coming up.
10:06Let's go.
10:07Let's get them back up.
10:08I just love seeing moments like that.
10:10It's what we live for.
10:11I can't actually believe we're experiencing it here in the UK.
10:15It's incredible.
10:16Just to see it.
10:17You couldn't have picked a better day for a moment like that.
10:23Coming up, I get owned by a genuine sea monster.
10:27You're definitely the boss in this fight.
10:28I'm most definitely not the boss.
10:32We were just off the coast for a meal for a coom in Devon.
10:40Our mad mission was to catch a 400-pound shark,
10:43and Bobby had just landed a 130-pound paw beagle.
10:47Well done, Bob.
10:48I'm glad you gave me the head end.
10:51We were proper pumped for more.
10:53Do you think that was our moment,
10:56and that's just the one beautiful, epic experience,
11:01or do you think there's more to come today?
11:03I think there's one more fish.
11:04Yeah?
11:05I think there's one more fish, pal,
11:07and if that's 130-140 pounds and there are fish sharks,
11:12in these waters there are 500-600 pounds.
11:15That's madness, isn't it?
11:16Can you just think about the power?
11:18It's exciting.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Double exciting, in fact, as it was me up next on the rods.
11:25Then suddenly a huge fish showed near to the boat on the sonar,
11:29and the gulls once again became spooked.
11:32Second one.
11:33Second one.
11:34Go, go, go.
11:35One of the baits near the boat had been taken
11:36and the fish was powering off at an incredible speed.
11:39Well, we didn't think that was going to happen.
11:42We thought that might have been our lot.
11:44One more fish.
11:46I don't think it's that big.
11:47This is going to come straight under the boat,
11:49so you might want to come up here a minute.
11:51But then it slowly turned
11:53and started moving off towards the stern of the boat.
11:55Whoa, she's a big girl.
11:57I couldn't really do anything with it,
11:59and I was now just being pulled about.
12:02What do the bigger fish do? Slower?
12:04Yeah, very slow like this,
12:06and then once they come up and actually see the boat,
12:08you'll find she'll probably power off.
12:10Back's going a bit now, Bob.
12:12Yeah, I thought so, pal.
12:13It's only a matter of time you get the old twinge down here.
12:16It's right there, Bob, as it goes.
12:18Yeah, I know, mate, I know.
12:23I'd felt nothing like this in my life.
12:25The power of it was insane,
12:27and it was taking every ounce of my incredible strength
12:30to keep the rod up.
12:31My back's killing me.
12:34Might have to do a tag team.
12:36I'd only been playing it ten minutes,
12:39but I already felt like I'd gone ten rounds with Tyson Fury.
12:43It was doing whatever it wanted.
12:46Then it decided to swim around the boat,
12:48and I had to follow.
12:53You're definitely the boss in this fight.
12:55You've definitely got him on the ropes, pal.
12:57I'm definitely not the boss.
12:58You've definitely got him on the ropes.
12:59Yeah, I weren't expecting this in the UK.
13:02I weren't expecting this here.
13:04This is serious.
13:08Oh, no, it's woken up.
13:09Yeah, it made it angry, pal.
13:10Let me do a stretch.
13:11Do a stretch.
13:12One sec.
13:13Just this side of the thing.
13:14Let go, let go, let go.
13:15Honestly, I think there's something to be said about tag teaming.
13:17Well, this is a duo, isn't it?
13:18This is a duo show.
13:19Do you know what I mean?
13:20Do you know what I mean?
13:21I know I'm going to face the wrath of all the anglers of the globe.
13:23Look at that.
13:24The skipper's disgusting with me.
13:25Ben, the other skipper's disgusting with me.
13:26Ben, the other skipper's disgusting with me.
13:27But, honestly...
13:28This is unbelievable.
13:29This is unbelievable.
13:30This is unbelievable.
13:31Let me do a stretch.
13:32Let me do a stretch.
13:33Let me do a stretch.
13:34Do a stretch.
13:35One sec.
13:36Just this side of the thing.
13:37Let go, let go.
13:38Honestly, I think there's something to be said about tag teaming.
13:41Well, this is a duo, isn't it?
13:42This is a duo show.
13:43Do you know what I mean?
13:44I know I'm going to face the wrath of all the anglers of the globe.
13:48The skipper's disgusting with me.
13:50Ben, the other skipper's disgusting with me.
13:53But, honestly...
13:56This is unbelievable.
13:57I know.
13:58It's hard, mate.
13:59Absolute sea beast.
14:01Oh!
14:02Fresher!
14:03Fresher!
14:04Fresher!
14:05Fresher!
14:06Fresher!
14:07Fresher!
14:08Fresher!
14:09Fresher!
14:10Fresher!
14:11Oh, it's a fresher!
14:12It's a fresher!
14:13Oh, my God.
14:14That's what it was.
14:15That's why my back's at it.
14:17Oh, my God.
14:18No way.
14:19Well, I ain't feeling fresh, but that is a fresher shark.
14:22And that is good.
14:23Good work, mate.
14:24Just now keep that tight.
14:25Now you've seen that's a fresher.
14:26I'll chase it if we got it.
14:28Oh, no wonder.
14:29Oh, my God.
14:30Did you see it?
14:31Did you see it?
14:32Whoa, whoa, whoa.
14:33Now it's turning.
14:34How's your back?
14:35Yours is sweet.
14:36I'm okay, mate.
14:37Yeah?
14:38You've done the hard work for us.
14:40No, no.
14:41Let me know when you're ready, though.
14:42I'll get back on.
14:43We'll have to do it in bits.
14:44Unbelievable.
14:45Yeah.
14:46Come on, episode of Shark Week.
14:48I never, ever expected for us to see something like that in the UK.
14:53That's mad, isn't it, Bob?
14:54Unbelievable.
14:55Actually, this is probably the biggest fish we will ever see in our lives,
14:58if we can get it to the boat.
15:00Dan, I'd start getting ready to back up to it now.
15:03Already on it, Mosh.
15:04Right, we're going to start going up to the fish a bit just to gain some line
15:08because otherwise we're going to be here till next September.
15:12Dan started slowly reversing the boat.
15:15Still to...
15:16Oh, here we go.
15:17It's turn.
15:18Is it turn?
15:19Slow down.
15:20Then suddenly I felt nothing.
15:22My heart sank.
15:24Was it off?
15:25Yeah.
15:26Keep whining, keep whining, keep whining.
15:27Go through the burn, Ali.
15:28Go through the burn.
15:29Just get that big bend back in, mate.
15:31Go on, you can do it.
15:32You can do it, you can do it.
15:33Seriously.
15:34Big drive, big drive.
15:35Go on.
15:36Go on, son.
15:37That's the way, mate.
15:38That's it.
15:39Keep that bend there.
15:40We were thankfully back in the game.
15:42Good work, Ali.
15:43He's definitely still here.
15:44This was turning into a proper Royal Rumble in the Jungle Tag Team Marathon.
15:51That's unbelievable.
15:53What a creature.
15:55I tell you what, I'm glad I've got the pebble with me today.
16:00Thank God for Zamora.
16:02He's going to come up round the bow, guys.
16:04Oh!
16:05Oh, my God, that's big.
16:06That's huge, boys.
16:07And again, and again.
16:08Oh, stay, stay, stay.
16:09We've got that on the drone.
16:10Let's have a little hold on it, on the tail, yeah?
16:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:12Let me know when you want it, mate.
16:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:14Well, you did a good job.
16:15You did a good job.
16:16That's ten foot.
16:17At least ten foot.
16:18At least ten foot.
16:19At least ten foot.
16:2016, probably 18.
16:2116 foot!
16:22Mate, the tail's massive.
16:23The tail's huge.
16:24What are the chances of hooking one of these?
16:26Oh, my God, that's big.
16:27Oh, my God, that's big.
16:28That's huge, boys.
16:29That's big.
16:30That's huge, boys.
16:31That's big.
16:32The tail's huge.
16:33What are the chances of hooking one of these?
16:36Honestly, the Grand Fishing Adventure, baby!
16:41Just be careful of the tail, boys, all right?
16:46Very careful of the tail.
16:47It's going at a rate of knots, Ali.
16:49Keep coming, keep coming, keep coming.
16:50The shark then started circling the boat,
16:53and everyone had to try and keep up.
16:56Bob, get ready.
17:01Absolutely unbelievable.
17:02Well done, Bobby.
17:04We've well surpassed the one-hour mark now.
17:07Yeah, the wire's here, the wire's here.
17:09So, ready, boys?
17:10Where's that GoPro?
17:11Ready?
17:12I'm going to keep you on it, mate.
17:13I'm going to keep you on it.
17:14You deserve to do this, mate, not me.
17:15You've done the hard part.
17:16Up round the front.
17:17Up round the front.
17:18As soon as I can wire it.
17:19There's the fish.
17:20Oh, my God.
17:21There it is.
17:22Whoa!
17:23Coming out this side.
17:25Mind the tail.
17:29I've got the rod.
17:30I've got the rod.
17:31I've got the rod.
17:32I've got the rod.
17:33This was like the greatest Rocky fight ever.
17:36It's a catch anyway, boys.
17:38Well done, Bob.
17:39Oh, my God.
17:41Well done, Bobby.
17:44Keep that line up there.
17:45Bobby, straight down the bank.
17:46Keep going, keep going.
17:47Keep going, keep going.
17:48Go on, Bob.
17:50Got it.
17:53Here it comes, this side.
17:54Nice.
17:55Here it comes, boys.
17:57Oh, my God.
17:58Oh, my God.
17:59Keep it there.
18:00Keep it there.
18:01Well done, Bob.
18:02Oh, I've got that.
18:03Unbelievable, mate.
18:04Oh, my God.
18:05Look at that.
18:06Go after that thing.
18:07Oh, look at the tail.
18:08Look at it.
18:09That is unbelievable.
18:10You've nailed it, Bob.
18:11Just mind the tail, boys.
18:12Look at the tail.
18:13Mind the tail.
18:14That is massive, boys.
18:15It's unbelievable.
18:16Between us, we've won the 90-minute battle.
18:19Oh, you're going to jump in and have a photo, pal?
18:21No.
18:22Yeah, we'll get it.
18:23It's your fish, mate.
18:24It's our fish.
18:25Team.
18:26Mate, that is unbelievable.
18:28How long is that?
18:2917 foot.
18:30And guess what?
18:31That could well be a male, boys.
18:34Ready for a release shot?
18:36Ladies and gentlemen, look at it.
18:44That is one of the...
18:46How good do you feel?
18:47Mate, that is the greatest fishing moment of my life.
18:50Seeing that fish take to the air.
18:54The realization exactly what it was.
18:56And then I just wanted to see it up close.
18:58Just wanted to see it.
18:59Just wanted to catch it.
19:00Yeah, captain.
19:01Yeah, my man.
19:02Like, seriously, mate.
19:04How big is that thing that just came up we've just released?
19:07550-plus fish.
19:09First male thresher I've personally caught on the boat, like...
19:13Come up against the wrong man, didn't he?
19:15Danny boy.
19:16Well done.
19:17Well done.
19:18Crew!
19:19Well done!
19:20Yeah!
19:21Get on it, boys!
19:24That's absolutely unbelievable!
19:27Get on the ground fishing adventure!
19:30Yes!
19:31I don't think any of us really thought it could ever happen.
19:36The greatest fish battle me, personally, I've ever experienced.
19:41And it's so special to be able to do it with me, pal, as well.
19:44Yeah, I think it's fair to say that what we wanted to achieve
19:49and what we've achieved is an unparalleled moment.
19:52That's going to take some topping, not just in the British Isles anywhere on planet Earth.
20:03Coming up, we target Britain's biggest freshwater predator.
20:08The line's great and we're going to lose this.
20:10We'd left the southwest and its sea creatures and had now driven 300 miles to Alan Partridge country.
20:24Aha!
20:26Zobby Bermora!
20:29Welcome to Norfolk!
20:30We were continuing our UK predator mission and were heading to a lake on the east side of the country
20:35that was home to giant Welsh catfish, but also big carp.
20:40A Brucey bonus!
20:42Do you like catfish?
20:43No, not particularly, mate. So you'll be dealing and handling most of catches.
20:49They are slimy, aren't they?
20:50I've had one before. I don't know whether it was pee or poo-poo, but it did.
20:56A projectile one all over me.
20:59Is this one us?
21:01This is us.
21:03The home of the giant cats.
21:07This was Oakwood Park Lakes, a five-acre water that holds the UK's biggest predator species,
21:14the Wells catfish.
21:15Here they go to an eye-watering 120lb, close to the British record.
21:21It also holds a few decent king carp too.
21:24We were going to target both.
21:27The mission on this lake would be to walk away with a 50lb-plus catfish,
21:32and then after that a few carp along the way.
21:35That would be lovely. That would be a nice trip.
21:37For this session we were doubling up in one large swim
21:40which commanded access to almost every area of the lake.
21:42I've never targeted catfish, so this is a first.
21:48Battle plan for tactics.
21:50We're going to go with a bit of a hybrid.
21:52We're going to fish some specific cat rods, okay,
21:55with proper catfish rigs and fish baits,
21:58and then we're going to put rods out that can catch both species,
22:02carp and catfish, so fishy boilies, pellets,
22:05some worms, some maggots to attract little fish in.
22:08We'll just have a laugh, see what happens.
22:09We had three rods each to put out.
22:14We were using a dinghy for marginal spots and areas around the island
22:17where cats were likely to ambush prey.
22:20It's just roaming around.
22:23We've got the echo sounder on there as well,
22:25so we can see any shelves, troughs, even fish you're going to see on there.
22:29Once a catty-looking spot's found, the bait is carefully dropped by hand.
22:33We were also putting out some rigs that would catch carp and cats via a bait boat,
22:39which was loaded up with stinky, fishy baits.
22:41With the bait boat, we targeted tree-lined margins,
22:45but also more open water spots as it created less disturbance
22:49where we used a sonar to locate the top and bottom of the raised bars,
22:53areas where we might pick up the cats or carp.
22:55Are you confident?
22:56Yeah, we're definitely going to get a bite tonight,
22:58and it's definitely going to be a decent fish, mate.
23:00Six chances.
23:02Well, we've got a variety of methods out there, Mr Zamora.
23:04This feels nice though. It feels a little bit like a holiday.
23:06Yeah, it does. I'm in the sun. I'm catching some rays.
23:08You're in the northerly wind. In the shade. Love it.
23:09Yeah, I didn't say where I was on holiday, did I?
23:10The North Pole.
23:11The evening drew in and the light levels dropped,
23:13often a great feeding time for predators.
23:14But were they hungry this evening?
23:16Yeah.
23:17Yeah.
23:18Yeah.
23:19Yeah.
23:20Yeah.
23:21Yeah.
23:22Yeah.
23:23Yeah.
23:24Yeah.
23:25Yeah.
23:26Yeah.
23:27Yeah.
23:28Yeah.
23:29Yeah.
23:30Yeah.
23:31Yeah.
23:32Yeah.
23:33Yeah.
23:34Yeah.
23:35Yeah.
23:36Yeah.
23:37Yeah.
23:38Yeah.
23:39Yeah.
23:40Yeah.
23:41Yeah.
23:42Yeah.
23:43Yeah.
23:44Yeah.
23:45Yeah.
23:46That's a cat.
23:47No, it's a grass carp.
23:48It's a grass carp.
23:49They weren't on the agenda.
23:51Grass carp are not part of the king carp family that we're targeting,
23:54but they're still nice to catch all the same.
23:57Oh.
23:58Then one of Zamo's catfish rods had an inquiry.
24:01Oh, Bob, you're away.
24:02Oh, yeah.
24:03Oh, yeah.
24:04I suddenly got mad. Bob that's a bite. Keep winding, keep winding. Oh yeah, he's in. Bob, he's in.
24:13What? Well that all went a bit mad. The first fish is grass cut. Well that was all a bit mental.
24:30Yeah well done now. Oh sorry Bob. Well here we go. First fish unexpected, a grass carp. We landed
24:44this and unfortunately Bobby lost what was almost certainly a decent catfish but
24:51it's riled us up now. We are gonna have our vengeance with those cats. The UK grass
24:57carp record is 44 pounds and 8 ounces and I estimated this one weighed around 15
25:02pounds. And two hours later. Another grass carp. Oh it's woke us up.
25:13And I completed the hat trick the following morning. It's the biggest one so far. They're almost like
25:26mullet these things. That's well over 20 pounds and they seem to be liking that little corner.
25:34A tweak was in order and we had just the plan. Mystical worms.
25:41That my friends is bait that would catch anything. A big carp or a big cat. We are going for a hybrid approach.
25:49That's a proper mouthful. Do you know what I mean? I always say, always check.
25:56You're an absolute wrong one mate. I can't mouthful that. It's a proper good bit of bait.
26:02All jokes aside I wouldn't advise this.
26:05But would this bait tweak be enough to entice a bigger fish?
26:18Oh that's the worms. That's the worms. The worms are away. We're away. Go on the worms.
26:24That is a good bite. What have we got? Surely not another grass carp. Oh it's a cat. It's a cat. I can feel the tail.
26:34A little tactical tweak we thought there was something to be had. Come on. Have a look.
26:40It's not going to be a big one. Here we go. First catfish. It's a baby one. Go on Bob. Yeah we're ready.
26:49Look at the worms sticking out of its mouth. I told you. You've got to taste the worms. You've got to feel the worms.
26:58You've got to make sure it's a mouthful. Well we've got our first catfish. Not the 50 pluser but it's a catfish.
27:08Thing is with this type of lake you know there's fish always about. You're never far away. So if you're not
27:13getting bites and we had a bit of a spread bet out there. A little tweak. Put the worms on a big bunch
27:19of them and we've had a cat. Nice one Bob. Just pull it in here. Come in here mate. You make a good ghillie.
27:28Better ghillie than you were a striker. Yeah. Good. There you go my man.
27:34Now worms. We've both had a taste now. The cat and me. Bob your favourite species on the bank.
27:43Now this I would say is about 15 pounds I'm guessing. About that. Still very powerful though right?
27:52Oh yeah yeah. It's got a mad tail on it.
27:57Oh there you go. There's a bit of worm for you. Mate you should always taste the fishes.
28:01Go on then. No I will if you will. Yeah go on you go first. No you go first. I'll do it 100 percent.
28:07Of course you will. You eat worms. They've got a lot of slime on them ain't they Bob. You've got
28:15Right anyway look. What's it been eating?
28:24Sweet and earthy. That's what I described. I promise you. You're gonna get a dig. Don't even think about it.
28:30I mean it. That's sweet and earthy right. So it's been eating in the mud. It's eating bait but it's also eating mud.
28:40Know your fish. Don't try this at home kids. All right let's get it back. That's interesting. Sick man.
28:46You're a sick sick man. But well done. Worms and catfish poo. Could this day get any better?
28:53No. What I've just seen Ali do there where the fish poo is on another level. I don't know if I'll
28:59want to go fishing with him ever again. Don't be like that Bob. Bye bye mate. We switched the majority of
29:08the rods to big bunches of wigglers and safe to say it was the lake's bait of choice.
29:15What is it? Bream. Feels a bit like an eel you know. No it was a baby catfish.
29:24Followed by yet another. It's back okay. I'm all right yeah I'm not giving you the rod.
29:29Yeah I can handle these ones. Go on get in the net. Got a catfish.
29:41It's another bream.
29:50We've had grasses, we've had catfish, we've had bream. It's right pick and mix isn't it here?
29:54It is yeah. But we haven't had the big cat and we haven't had king carp. Probably actually what we
30:02want the most. Well they haven't um I think it's hard isn't it? It's hard for the carp to get looking
30:08on here. You think you put bait out it tracks the cats and then the carp don't really want to be
30:13hanging out with cats they might get eaten by. It's like you're not going to dine with your enemy are
30:20you? Oh then again I eat with you all the time. Yeah. So we've got a bite. We're going to get a bite.
30:28I want you to come in with you. Yeah yeah that's on you. Oh that's definitely a bite. That's it.
30:33That's a better bite. I said I'm going to let it develop this time. That's a bigger one.
30:37That's a bigger one Bob. That's a bigger. Oh you better get the bite. It's definitely a bigger one Bob.
30:46It's definitely a bigger one. Bob we need that boat quick. Here with your armbands.
30:53Quick get the armbands on Bob. We need to go Bob. Bob this one's on the way to out of Mongolia.
31:00Something much bigger had taken me into a snag so we jumped in the boat to try and free it.
31:07Slow down. Oh not good.
31:10The line's great and we're going to lose this. Feels like I have a fishing line.
31:18Oh we're on. Here it is. We're in business.
31:24Cat. Catty catty.
31:26Meow. Oh look at that. There it is. It was ready for netting but it was proving harder than I first thought.
31:37Oh oh oh oh oh. No. Do you want me to do it? Yeah.
31:45You get it? Yeah.
31:46Coming up had we completed our mission of a 50 pound catfish.
32:00What do you think first? I think it's over 50. Okay. Let's go.
32:04We were in Norfolk on a mission to catch a 50 pound plus cat and a decent king car.
32:16Good man. Were we about to complete 50% of the challenge?
32:21Thought we were going to lose that one for certain but we didn't. We've got it in the net. It's the biggest one of the trip. It might even touch 50 pounds.
32:30But maybe not also.
32:3443 pounds and 7 ounces.
32:4143.7. That'll do.
32:44Nice one pal. I'm happy with that. Yeah.
32:46I might just target carp from now on.
32:49Right Bob. Let's have a look at our 43 pounder. Get in there lads. Come on mate.
32:55Don't slap me up. There you go. Look at the whiskers.
33:00Oh there. Lovely fish. Lovely colours.
33:05Grey, moody and this predator will hopefully go back
33:09and live another lively day. What are you thinking Bob?
33:12They're not the prettiest thing in the world but I do appreciate their power mate. I really do.
33:16We now needed an elusive king carp and a big cat for Bob. Mainly for the slime factor.
33:22As of yet, not got anything decent on the bank. I'm specimen hunting for bream though it looks like.
33:28But yeah, I think I'm going to jump in that left hand side, that little margin that Ali's been picking them off and try and nip one for myself.
33:35Bob was then away again just as our resident two Michelin-starred carpy chef Daniel Clifford arrived for our next bankside grub tutorial.
33:50Was this Bob's first catfish?
33:52Can I get a net then? Come on mate, we want to cook a steak here.
33:56Well we've got one, a fresh one. Catfish steak.
33:58Look, I'm miraculous. I'm going to do abracadabra and you're going to get a net in your swim. Watch this, look.
34:03Yeah? Abracadabra. Worm whisperer.
34:06There you go, look. Look.
34:07Oh.
34:09Banging you.
34:14Well done Bob. You're going up that size spectrum nicely.
34:18Yeah, that's almost twice the size of you.
34:20They do get bigger than that in here by the way.
34:23Is that the biggest of the trip?
34:24Most definitely not. No.
34:26But it is Bobby's biggest of the trip.
34:28Oh, he's catching up then.
34:30Well, that's debatable. Catching up.
34:35Steak time.
34:37Waiting for you.
34:41Today lads, we're going to cook ribeye steak, fondant potatoes, buttered spinach.
34:45And if we've got time, we're going to make a peppercorn sauce.
34:47Steak on the bank, Dazzler. It doesn't get any better than this.
34:52Obviously, just for me, because I've caught the biggest. The man who's caught the littlest has
34:56to have chicken or catfish.
34:57I'll take that.
34:58I'll take that.
34:59To start with, we're going to put the potatoes on, so we need the big pan.
35:03Yes, chef.
35:04So what we need to do is cut the sides of the potatoes.
35:09So you get them nice and flat on both sides.
35:12In case you hadn't realised, today we were doing a Daniel Clifford cook-along.
35:16Yummy.
35:17Right, perfect. Now we need to take the butter.
35:19Yep.
35:20Master chef Daniel is demonstrating the type of meal that any angler could actually cook
35:24whilst out on the bank or at home.
35:26That's all we need to do now. Take the leaves of spinach and just pull that centre stem out,
35:31yeah?
35:31What's wrong with spinach with the stem in then?
35:33Well, the stem makes it go black.
35:35All right.
35:36And to be honest with you, it's just, it doesn't look as nice on the plate.
35:39Oh, cheeky.
35:41That's not as easy as it looks, to be honest.
35:43How much do we need?
35:44About half a packet.
35:45Oh.
35:45Quite.
35:47Blimey, no time to get rods out. We'll be doing this.
35:49So now we have the laborious job of stripping four million spinach stalks.
35:54Very good for you, isn't it, spinach?
35:55Spinach full of iron, isn't it?
36:02That jacket is properly camouflaged.
36:04No, it's fully full iron.
36:06No, no, but I'll be honest with you, I've seen some camo in my time,
36:08but you've got like leaves just growing out the back of it.
36:11Explain to him about the design, Al.
36:18Very funny, Zamora.
36:20So finally, stick-free spinach followed by perfect potatoes.
36:25Look at that.
36:26You know what I mean?
36:28I'll be honest with you.
36:30If there's a career change, you know where I am, yeah?
36:32I'm good, aren't I, Daniel?
36:34Yeah, yeah, you are.
36:35Music to my ears.
36:38Next, the main event.
36:40Right, we're going steak now.
36:41A nice layer of salt.
36:43So we all grab our steaks.
36:45So salt side into the pan.
36:51Oh, it smells good already, that.
36:53Next up, frying the steak for five minutes in half a tonne of butter.
36:57My mouth is absolutely watering.
37:00How many calories is this dish?
37:01You don't count them.
37:02We don't count them, do we?
37:03Let's go for a run in the morning.
37:05Play some fish.
37:06Yeah.
37:07I've had quite long battles for mine, so I've probably burned some calories, you know.
37:11Bob's have been average 32 seconds, his fight.
37:14The difference is you're always on bulking, mate.
37:15I'm always on shredding.
37:16So it works out quite well, doesn't it?
37:17And they were ready to rest.
37:22Just like that?
37:23Yeah, that's actually perfect.
37:25Final parts of the jigsaw.
37:27The peppercorn sauce and the spinach.
37:29Probably the quickest you'll ever see it cooked, in fact.
37:32Pour in your shallots.
37:34A little bit of brandy.
37:36So now we take the chicken stock.
37:37About three spoonfuls.
37:39So reduce that by half.
37:41Three tablespoons of cream.
37:42So a little bit of salt.
37:44Turn the heat down.
37:45What I finish it with, lemon juice.
37:47That's it.
37:48Put these in.
37:50And my sauce is finished.
37:52I'm going to put that on top of my steak to keep warm.
37:55I like that.
37:56That's lovely, yeah?
37:57I could eat a pot of that.
37:58Well, you're going to, isn't it?
38:00Right, so now what we've all got to do is cook the spinach.
38:03I love my big stoves off.
38:06Look at that.
38:07Oh, you cheeky little rascal.
38:11That's still warm as well.
38:13It goes onto your plate like that nicely.
38:16Oh, I'll wait to eat this.
38:18That's good.
38:20Steak and chips, Bankside.
38:23Is that potato going to me?
38:24Yeah, yeah.
38:25There you go, boys.
38:27But whose was the best?
38:29There is no competition because they all look the same.
38:31They're absolutely perfect.
38:33I'm very, very impressed.
38:34It looks unbelievable, but how does it taste?
38:37That's the part I'm interested in.
38:39That's the only part I'm interested in now.
38:42Let's try it.
38:44Oh, them potatoes are outrageous.
38:45The potatoes are incredible.
38:48If you're looking for any words, Mr. Director, you're not getting none for about seven or eight minutes.
38:55Top-notch Bankside grub.
38:57Pretty easy too, but it wasn't only us learning today.
39:00I think what's interesting is when I turned up, the amount of worms you're putting on has completely surprised me.
39:06I've never seen anyone use that amount.
39:09I just stood back and thought, wow, that's really impressive.
39:12It's good because, you know, I'm learning a lot from this as well, so it's been a really enjoyable experience.
39:18We're taking home more than you are.
39:22What a gent.
39:23With full bellies, we went into the night of fishing hoping for another big cat or one of the lake's elusive king carp.
39:32Porsy cat. Porsy cat.
39:34Oh, Bob, you're going up, aren't we?
39:37Look at these.
39:38Big, big bunch of worms sticking out in the chop.
39:43Chip chop chop, we've had steak, you've had worms, everyone wins.
39:51Not the biggest of the trip, but it's the biggest for me.
39:54And as you can see, I've got gloves on.
39:57I'm not enjoying this slime, not one little bit.
40:01Less than 24 hours remained.
40:03Would this be the last fish or would the worms work more wonders?
40:08Nothing further was caught overnight.
40:14Just a few hours remained and neither of us had managed to catch a king carp.
40:18So we split.
40:21I remained at base camp.
40:23Zamora went stalking and he'd only managed to locate some.
40:27So I've just gone for a walk and I've spotted a bit of cloudy water.
40:33I've taken five minutes, taken a look, and I believe these are king carp, the carp that I and Ali normally go for.
40:39So I'm very subtly going to try and drop a bunch of worms in and amongst those reeds,
40:45or just off the side of those reeds and hope that they're in that feeding mood, which I think they are.
40:51And hopefully I can nick one and that'd be great to get another species on the bank.
41:02Bobby's gone over there.
41:03I think he's spotted a few king carp because we're called grass carp, but you know, proper, authentic, normal carp.
41:11Hopefully he gets one.
41:12Or me.
41:13While he's over there, that'd be funny, wouldn't it?
41:15Imagine that.
41:17I saw the line pick up and take off, but nothing on the end, maybe a little impatient.
41:35It felt like Bob had missed a last minute penalty.
41:38We were now into extra time and still hadn't managed the king carp between us.
41:44But what was this?
41:47It's a proper bite.
41:50Oh, this could be a big carp.
41:54Oh, he's saying a carp.
41:56Grandstand finish, Bobby's over there stalking.
42:00It's definitely a bend in the rod, so it's not a bream.
42:07It feels a bit carpy to me, this.
42:09Is it king carp?
42:12Or grass carp?
42:15What is it?
42:17What have we got?
42:19It is a carp.
42:21It is a carp.
42:22Look, hey!
42:26We've got a full house.
42:27They eat the worms quite really wanted them worms. Look how far it's in its mouth.
42:36Hey!
42:39Good man, Ali.
42:39They're out rearing the carp, Bob.
42:43I'm pushing them over to you.
42:44I left the carp safely in a retention sling and Bob called it a day stalking as time was up on this trip.
42:53But just as we started to film a cool slow-mo sequence for the end, one of my rods that was still fishing ripped off.
42:59We'll be moving on.
43:06Talk about an extra time bite.
43:08Oh, that's a big collar!
43:11That's a big collar!
43:13What are the chances?
43:16It's a nice collar, that.
43:18Oh, it's quite a nice fish, that, isn't it?
43:20Yeah.
43:25Go on, Dassler.
43:26Oh, it's a dumpy one.
43:28Oh, listen to them chops. Look at them chops.
43:31Oh!
43:33Would you, Adam and Eve,
43:36we do like a grand finish in the grand fishing adventure.
43:41Whishah!
43:43That's a dirty-thirty, that.
43:44That's a dirty-thirty.
43:46Well, we do aim to please.
43:49I thought we were going to leave the session without any king carp.
43:52Bobby had a little chance over there,
43:54and then out of the blue, we catch two back-to-back.
43:57Madness.
43:58A bit gutted. I was over there on top of them.
44:00They just weren't having me,
44:01but I only managed to nab them and got full out.
44:04Yes.
44:05An unbelievable ending.
44:07I had a look at the first of the two commons
44:10and estimated it weighed in at around 28 pounds.
44:13But the second carp, I definitely wanted to weigh.
44:17It could even be 40 pounds.
44:19It's an amazing fish. It ain't a 40.
44:22It is 36 pounds pretty much on the button.
44:27That'll do, though.
44:29That is a really, really big carp.
44:34Well happy with that. What are you saying, Bob?
44:37Yeah, mate. It surprises me every single time, pal.
44:40That's something special always happens.
44:42Beautiful, beautiful common carp.
44:44It's been a really, really fun trip, this.
44:46So much action. We've had a lot of bites, haven't we?
44:48A lot of bites, mate. A lot of different species as well.
44:50And this tops it off. Couldn't ask for any more, could you?
44:53Don't eat any more worms.
44:55This has been so much fun from coast to country.
44:58We've really had a good taste of some very varied fishing in the UK.
45:03I've loved it. I know Bobby has as well.
45:05He'll feel a little bit shortchanged from his experience in Norfolk,
45:08but he had a wallet full of cash from his time in Devon.
45:13Predator trip was amazing.
45:15Coming here was fantastic,
45:17but the greatest moment was seeing that fresher get some air.
45:22One thing's for certain, it was fun.
45:25And fishing is the winner.
45:27Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
45:30That's entertainment.
45:33That's entertainment.
45:38La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
45:51You goto!
45:52Little toky.
45:53Doing listening.
45:54Silence.
45:55Okay.
45:57There we go.
45:58Cover me.
45:59I don't have to.
46:00Fin Tennessee.
46:01Little toky.
46:03Going to legend.
46:04The!
46:05Highway that, In
