00:00The tip, the tip, the tip, the tip.
00:02What? Oh, no.
00:04You put me off, you sussies.
00:06The games have begun.
00:08Let's get over there, boys.
00:12Two friends. Boom.
00:14Look at that.
00:16On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:18Want a piece of this action, Bob?
00:20Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:22And that's more likely.
00:24And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:26I'm an Iranian wrestler.
00:28Madabra.
00:30This series we're touring Spain and France.
00:33Look at that.
00:35On our greatest mission to date.
00:37Did you see that?
00:38Well done, Tesla.
00:40It won't all be plain sailing.
00:42I'm actually scared.
00:44It's a stingray.
00:45But we will be trying to catch the biggest and best fish.
00:49What a beast, eh?
00:50What an achievement, mate.
00:52Yes.
00:54This is the Grand Fishing Adventure.
00:57Yes.
00:58Yes.
00:59Look at the size of the thing.
01:01Mate, that is mental.
01:03Ah, Bobby.
01:04I love France.
01:05I love it.
01:06This is the country for personal bests.
01:07I couldn't live here, though.
01:08Could you?
01:09Well, I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:10But...
01:11I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:12But...
01:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:14What about French?
01:15What's your French like?
01:16That's even worse.
01:17How about that?
01:18France.
01:19Land of the monsters.
01:20So many people.
01:21I can't speak a word of French.
01:22I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:24God.
01:25Oh, Bobby.
01:26I love France.
01:27I love it.
01:28Oh, Bobby.
01:29I love France.
01:30I love it.
01:31This is the country for personal bests.
01:32I couldn't live here, though.
01:33Could you?
01:34Well, I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. What about French? What's your French like?
01:43That's even worse. How about that?
01:47France, land of the monsters. So many places to go at, so many different types of venues
01:54and so many. Huge, huge carp.
01:57I'm looking forward to the French adventure. I've fished in France before. I've caught
02:02two big fish as well, so it's exciting to be back on the ground that I've fished before.
02:07Our grand French fishing adventure finds us in the northern part of the country
02:11with our destination just 100 kilometres south-east of Paris, Trebien.
02:23We were driving to a complex of lakes called Carpe Sons, famed among anglers for its giant king carp,
02:29but we were heading to a small intimate water nestled between trees that holds Koi carp,
02:34aptly named the Koi Park.
02:37This lake holds around 100 of this multi-coloured variety of carp that originate from Eastern Asia,
02:44and this first mission had a bit of competitive spice to it.
02:49Right, so, should we have a little match? Yes, we need a little competition.
02:53So, there's no trophy, so we should do a forfeit instead.
02:56So, say it happens to the loser.
02:58Whoever catches the most colourful is clear. They're in the clear.
03:01The loser should get to eat a baguette.
03:07Yeah, sounds good up to there, doesn't it?
03:09Yeah. With snails in it. No butter, nothing.
03:13Just straight snails, maybe a bit of sand.
03:15Garlic, a little bit of garlic in there. Unseasoned.
03:18They'll probably come with herbs anyway, don't worry about it.
03:22It'll probably be me that eats them anyway.
03:25I'm not really a fanatic about eating snails,
03:29so eating snails as a result of losing, that makes me want to win.
03:36Love to win a competition, any sport, whatever it may be,
03:40but this one I certainly don't want to lose.
03:42Don't like the taste of snails, so I'll be doing anything to win.
03:46Maybe not fair.
03:51We didn't have a lot of time, so it was a case of hitting the ground running.
03:55Techers-wise, we were going to be fishing on the deck,
03:58with rigs similar to how we would fish for king carp,
04:01but very slightly scaled down.
04:03We'd be using higher tracked hook baits,
04:05but starting with different colours to try to determine what the koi were fancying on the day.
04:10And for even more added attraction, we'd be using higher track ground bait made up of crushed pellets,
04:16and also sell boilies that we put in dissolving PVA mesh bags.
04:24Ready? Well, I would wish you good luck, but I'd be lying.
04:27I don't want to eat snails either.
04:29Off your pot. No, mate. Go on.
04:31I think it's quite a long cast, this, with a PVA bag.
04:35Here we go.
04:36Up a tree, what do you reckon?
04:38I hope so.
04:39Up a tree? I hope so.
04:40I'm going up a tree.
04:41I might not even reach the tree.
04:43He's got the tip, the tip, the tip, the tip.
04:45What?
04:46What?
04:47Oh no, you put me off, you sausage.
04:49The games have begun.
04:51Well then, you get your rod out.
04:54Well, tip, tip.
04:55Too late, too late, too late.
04:56Tip, tip.
04:57Oh, short, short, short, short.
04:59Oh, perfect.
05:00So I had snow on it.
05:02Well, it's nowhere near the trees.
05:03What, you fishing for congrails?
05:04Mate, don't you worry about me.
05:05Fishing for congas in 90 foot of water.
05:07Don't you worry about me, mate.
05:09Don't you worry about me.
05:11I then managed to get another PVA bag sorted and the rod cast back out.
05:16Now that's how you cast under a tree.
05:19And while Zamora faffed about spraying bait all over the gaff, I even got my second rod out, too.
05:25He's not as sharp these days, the old washed up footballer.
05:30Finally, he got himself sorted, but I've known snails that are quicker.
05:41The next hour turned out even slower than Bob getting his rods out.
05:45And the sun was beating down with temperatures steadily rising.
05:56Hot, innit?
05:57It's going to be hard today.
05:59It's going to be a struggle.
06:00Not the greatest conditions, pal, but it could be a 1-0-er.
06:06Zamora.
06:08Any colour would do, wouldn't it?
06:10Yeah, it could be.
06:11Any fish could do, could win.
06:12How boring is that, eh?
06:16Let's hope he was wrong.
06:17The hours began to slowly pass as the temperatures steadily soared.
06:23And while I tried to take solace from the sun,
06:25Zamora wandered off looking super shady.
06:29Old mateys in the shade the other side, I'm just thinking outside the box.
06:44It's not great conditions and it doesn't look good.
06:47But I'm going for, if I catch a fish, it's the most colourful fish, right?
06:53So I'm going to try and nab one of these.
06:59Oh, there's one over the top.
07:00We have got a lot of lovely colour here, look at that.
07:19Look at the colours of that.
07:21We'll keep that one in the back pocket.
07:23Woo!
07:24Listen, I've seen these little things in the side.
07:27They look like they've got a little bit of something about them.
07:30Lovely sunfish, bright and sunny.
07:33At this stage in the proceedings, I was unaware of Zamora's sneaky scoop
07:37and had decided to try and tempt a koi carp the big bunch of worms
07:41in a simple float set-up just down from where I was fishing on the tree line.
07:46Bunch of worms.
07:49A float.
07:52And just this little bit of putty over a swivel.
07:55So what will happen is this will lay on the deck, this part on the bottom,
08:00and then the rest of the line will go up to the float like this.
08:04So it's called fishing over depth on a float.
08:08But, yeah, it enables us to creep in this little area
08:12and see if we can catch one.
08:16As I went to drop the float in,
08:18a few koi were in dead close and spooked off,
08:21but hopefully they'd return.
08:28While Zamora was catching some zeds,
08:31I had a little tickle on the float.
08:34Oh! Oh! We got mine! We got mine!
08:37Ah, what?
08:39God, that was close!
08:40That proper... my line ripped off.
08:42There's stuff down there.
08:44I don't know what it is, but there's stuff down there.
08:46I had a feeling it wasn't actually koi carp.
08:50I think it's catfish.
08:52Little catfish.
08:58Some little rascal was playing with my worm.
09:02Here we go.
09:07Whee!
09:09We're off the mark!
09:11Whee!
09:12Whee!
09:17There we go.
09:18That is what has been smacking our worms.
09:22And now that's what we call, in France, a poisson chat.
09:27And Zamora was none the wiser.
09:31Now, I am pretty certain we did not say the most colourful koi.
09:37We just said the most colourful.
09:39So that is most certainly the most colourful fish of the day.
09:45The poisson chat.
09:47Most certainly not sacred.
09:51Bye-bye, little chat.
09:54It got me.
10:01I called it a day on the float fishing just as a weather front came in from nowhere.
10:16It finally calmed down after an hour and a half, but we'd resigned ourselves to a defeat on the koi front.
10:23Ah!
10:25Blame the weather. This rain came too late.
10:28Mate, it's a bit of a disaster.
10:32Very, very slow.
10:34Almost a snail's pace.
10:37Come on then, let's get them in.
10:41We knew it was going to be a tall order from the beginning.
10:43The weather definitely against us.
10:46And just when it was time to really pack up, the weather turned like we would have liked it from the beginning.
10:52Wasn't meant to be. The koi dream lives on.
10:56Overall, disappointed.
10:58But every snail has a silver lining.
11:01Ah, yes, the escargoes.
11:03Well, after a steward's inquiry, it was decided that Bob's dodgy neck caught some fish was more colourful than my poisson chat.
11:09I think it's a fix, to be honest.
11:12We never actually said it has to be caught on rod and lion.
11:15You've scooped a sunk, I think they're a sunkissed bass, innit?
11:18Right.
11:19Do I have to eat it with the shells? No.
11:21No, mate.
11:22Mate, you are no stranger to eating strange things, or certainly having strange things in your mouth.
11:25So, this is just like another day in the life of Ali Hamidi.
11:30Bon appétit, as they say.
11:32Well, give me at least a fist bump. Cheers.
11:34I can't believe you blagged this.
11:38Mmm.
11:39Fair play, mate.
11:40I look forward to the next challenge.
11:47Okay.
11:48No, no, no, mate.
11:49It's got to go and all.
11:50Make sure you swallow that bit.
11:51And we bite.
11:53More than we have today.
11:54I'll give you one more.
11:56We have no bites today.
11:59Coming up, the action comes thick and fast at the main event.
12:04Yes.
12:06Bobby, are you here?
12:09We were in central France and had failed dismally on our colourful Coy mission where I'd just caught a baby catfish.
12:25A Poisson chat.
12:27And Zamora net scooped to some fish, meaning by default I had to endure a snail baguette.
12:33I can't believe you blagged this.
12:34We were now moving to another Carpersons complex just up the road to start our main mission.
12:41King carp.
12:42And it was Scorchio.
12:45Come on then, Bob.
12:46The weather is very hot.
12:49Not ideal fishing conditions, but the rewards are there, mate.
12:53This is an amazing place we're going to.
12:54It only takes one fish out.
12:56We don't have to be hauling.
12:57We don't have to catch loads of fish because there are fish in here that can be your PB and can be my PB.
13:06So, listen, we're in with a chance.
13:08We only need one.
13:10Big mama.
13:11Big mama.
13:12Or as they say in France, the Grand...
13:16Fromage?
13:17That's it.
13:18Your French is getting good.
13:20Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
13:23And we'd arrived.
13:24Oh mate, look at the amount of lakes!
13:31This is mental!
13:35Le Prunay, a 45 acre water, the lake of two halves with a thin island strip running right
13:44through the middle.
13:45It has average depths of 16 to 22 feet and is fed by 10 natural springs with a high water
13:51quality of natural food sources such as bloodworms, mussels and crayfish.
13:57This venue holds catfish, sturgeon and our target species, carp, ranging from pristine
14:04new stockies to many old originals, some real stunners that go up to an eye-watering 80 pounds.
14:15History says this side is a little bit more favourable.
14:18I do feel a little bit sorry for you after yesterday mate and eating those snails so I'm
14:25going to offer you first pick in the swims.
14:28I will as I'm left footed, you're two footed, I'm going to go on the left hand side.
14:33Potentially though, I would like to invite you to have one rod if you decide at any point
14:39in the session on this side and I'd like you to extend that offer to me then we're spread betting.
14:43Let's just get our rods out, enjoy it, see how we feel, let me catch a few first and then
14:48I'll let you slip in.
14:49Alright?
14:50Oh you've got a bit, there's a bit of romance about it.
14:52You must be the French hair Bob.
14:53Love it when you're happy.
14:54Let's get them out.
14:56I've given me partner the best side obviously because that's the sort of guy I am but listen
15:03I've got a lot of water in front of me and the fish have got cells, they could be in front
15:07of me at any time.
15:08It's that to me, present my bait well, make sure my rigs are right and I'm in with a chance.
15:14This lake was weedy in places so we first got to work trying to find clear spots in open
15:19water for us to present our rigs using a combination of marker floats, bare leads but also the sonar
15:25on the bait boat.
15:30After finding some spots it was on to the business end, the rigs.
15:36Bob opted to fish his trusty D rigs on two rods with cell boilies topped with fake corn.
15:41His third was a spinner rig with a diamond white pop up.
15:44I went for three wafter rigs with lock hooks, each with tiger nuts, sweet pineapple and bumbleberry
15:50hook baits alongside a dissolvable PVA bag packed with crushed boilies and pellets.
15:56Lead system wise it was a lead clip coupled with a self triggering hooking device for optimum
16:01tactics.
16:02For free bait we both went for a mix of whole and crushed cell and isosweet boilies, pellets,
16:07sweet corn and hemp.
16:09This was loaded with the rigs into the bait boats which we both used to get it all out with
16:14pinpoint accuracy onto clear spots we'd already found.
16:26It wasn't too long before all of our six rods were on the dance floor and ready to boogie.
16:36Question was, would the carp be up for the party?
16:39We went into the first evening on the lake with feelings of slight trepidation as the
16:43lake hadn't been fishing that well before we arrived.
16:46After a while I started to get a few single bleeps which we call liners, normally caused by fish
16:52brushing against a line underwater but was it carp?
16:55I've been getting a whole lot of liners.
17:05Really could do with your partner yeah?
17:08With Bob totally sound though I had to rope in the director for netting duties.
17:13Never mind Bobby Zamora.
17:15Here steps up Nick Warner.
17:17That's definitely been eating my bait.
17:23A surprise species too.
17:26Here we go.
17:27A sturgeon.
17:28Go on Nick.
17:29Have you done this before haven't you mate?
17:33Control it.
17:34Control it.
17:35Great skills from the director in the absence of a sleeping Zamora.
17:39Cheers Bob.
17:40I mean Nick.
17:42There you go.
17:44A sturgeon.
17:46First fish.
17:47They were giving me murders.
17:49They were even keeping you up.
17:50I were.
17:51Not Bob though.
17:54Nah.
17:55Nothing keeps Bob up past 8.30.
17:58Well apart from a bite on his own rod that is.
18:02What have we got?
18:04The weed.
18:05Oh it's a...
18:06Right.
18:07You sleep through my sturgeon on purpose.
18:11No no.
18:12Well that's sturgeon.
18:13Yeah.
18:14I had to get someone else to come and help net it.
18:17Okay.
18:18Well congratulations big sturgeon.
18:19What was it?
18:20Well it was biggest one we've ever caught on the show so far.
18:25It was a moment I wanted to share with you.
18:28Oh.
18:29Hey you could have called me.
18:30You could have called me and I would have just said we'll lay it yourself inside.
18:35Well happy good are you then.
18:37Come on little carp.
18:38What are you going to be?
18:39Talk to us.
18:40You're in the net.
18:41Das is in the net.
18:42Yay.
18:43First carp of the trip for Captain Kip.
18:48I've got what we come for.
18:49I've also found out me little wingman has had a sturgeon.
18:53Didn't even wake me.
18:55What a lovely guy.
18:56I'm not the big guy I thought.
18:59But I made 30 and I'm off the mark.
19:03Thank you very much.
19:06Go on off you go.
19:08Well done.
19:09Now off for more Zed Zamo.
19:11You'll need it mate.
19:18Oh weary team.
19:20A lot of bleeps.
19:22A little bit of action.
19:24So on a positive note I think that was a relatively good start.
19:27We've just got to get into the zone.
19:31Understand the lake.
19:32New venue.
19:33And I think if we keep chipping away even with the conditions we might have a few.
19:40I like that.
19:43Well waking up this morning.
19:49Certainly had my nerves settled last night.
19:52With a mid 30.
19:53So close to our target of 40 pounds.
19:56But I'm happy.
19:57I'm in a good place.
19:59First one just relieves that pressure.
20:01I'm looking forward to today.
20:03It's not due to be as hot as it was yesterday.
20:06Certainly a bit of cloud cover today.
20:08So hopefully a couple of carp in the day.
20:11That would be beautiful.
20:13And I had a little plan to get a daytime bite.
20:17It involved tiger nuts.
20:18Worms.
20:19And my left hand margin.
20:21Well I was going to let Bobby have a rod in here.
20:24But you know as I'm wasting it all by myself in here.
20:27I might as well put another rod out.
20:28So fourth rod going out.
20:30There's the bait.
20:32A little switch up.
20:33I've chopped some worms in there.
20:34A bit of hemp.
20:35Different sized boilies.
20:36Hopefully that could just lure a carp in these sort of quake.
20:40Humid conditions.
20:42And then the hook bait interestingly.
20:44Is two tiger nuts.
20:46There's a blackened one.
20:47And one soaked in a bit of flavour with the skin taken off.
20:50That helps them soak up flavour even more.
20:52And the reason I've put them out.
20:54Is there are crayfish in here.
20:56And because I'm going to put this along the margin.
20:59The tree line.
21:00Crayfish are more likely to be there nesting away.
21:03And more likely that hook bait will come under scrutiny.
21:06From their claws.
21:08So all I've got to do now.
21:09Is put a bit of dissolving foam on.
21:11This will ensure that the hook bait.
21:13If there are twigs and stuff under water.
21:16It doesn't necessarily land in them.
21:17It will float up.
21:18And then once that melts.
21:20That will drop my balanced tiger nuts.
21:23Which have a little bit of cork inside.
21:25Onto that bait.
21:27That is us.
21:28Another chance.
21:29Another opportunity.
21:30Another lottery ticket.
21:31In the world of carp fishing in France.
21:35And I wasted no time in getting the rig dropped up my left hand margin.
21:41In about nine feet of water.
21:43In less than an hour my margin rod was away.
21:59Our first daytime bike.
22:01Yes.
22:02Bobby are you here?
22:04Yes.
22:05Bobby are you here?
22:11Come on.
22:12Come on.
22:13Isn't that my rod?
22:15It's your rod basically.
22:17So?
22:18So really yeah it's yours.
22:19I'll just put it out and I'm going to play it.
22:23Coming up I also hook a prehistoric monster.
22:26Mate it was big.
22:28I'm actually scared.
22:29It's longer than this.
22:39Our second mission in France to catch a 40 pound plus carp had started well with a mid 30 for Zamo.
22:46I'd caught a rogue sturgeon with the assistance of the director.
22:50And now I was away on my margin rod which I put out in the hope of getting daytime bites.
22:55Was this my first carp?
22:57It was quite fat this Bob.
22:58Yeah?
22:59Good.
23:00I'm going quite dumpy.
23:01Just when I pulled it back there it felt like it's a fat carp.
23:06Well we know the number we need to get to.
23:09Naughty 40.
23:10Come on.
23:11Whatever the size it was definitely leading me a merry dance.
23:17Keep that tension pal.
23:18But now it was in pretty close.
23:20Oh it's juicy that Bob.
23:22Yeah.
23:23Two tone.
23:24That's decent.
23:25That's what we come for mate.
23:27If you pull over I'm going straight up.
23:29Okay.
23:30I think we've got.
23:31We're going to get off the mark.
23:32We're going to get off the mark.
23:34Yes.
23:35Yes.
23:36That looks like a 40.
23:37That's bigger than 40.
23:38Yeah it's wide as well.
23:39That's wide man.
23:40Wide.
23:41Get in there.
23:42Get in there.
23:44Get in there.
23:45Get on Zamos fourth.
23:47Rod.
23:48That's yours really.
23:50I've done so well.
23:53Coming in Ali.
23:54Can we do it?
23:55Would it make a 40 pound mission weight?
23:58Oh Bobby.
23:59That's 40 for sure.
24:00Definitely 40.
24:01Bob I'm going to call it 45.8.
24:03Target achieved.
24:04Well done sir.
24:05Well done to us both.
24:06It's your rod mate.
24:07It's your rod anyway.
24:08Look at that.
24:10That is a proper chunky chunky French mirror carp.
24:15Just what we came for.
24:16Want a piece of this action Bob?
24:18Not right now.
24:19First carp for me and mission accomplished.
24:32What a belter too.
24:33Now for Zamora to catch a 40 pound plus carp as well.
24:36Then hopefully both push on to a 50 pounder.
24:43The margin rod went back out as the afternoon passed.
24:46Clouds and low pressure started to roll in.
24:49Great conditions for more daytime action.
24:57Then a huge fish jumped over my open water spots.
25:01And it looked like a massive sturgeon.
25:04Then 90 seconds later.
25:06That's a bite.
25:07There were supposedly just 10 sturgeon in this lake.
25:10And I was certain I'd just hooked my second of the trip.
25:14Old sturgeon.
25:15Zamora was actually on it for a change.
25:17And already getting into his waders ready to help land it.
25:20If we got the chance.
25:22Here it comes.
25:23Can you talk me through how am I supposed to land this?
25:26I'll lead it in head first then you slide the sling.
25:30Yeah.
25:31You probably want to come.
25:32Well I'm going to.
25:33Yeah yeah like that.
25:34That's it.
25:35That's nice.
25:36Back of the net yeah?
25:37Yeah.
25:38Silver.
25:39Is it silver?
25:40Silver bruv.
25:41Mate it was big.
25:42I'm actually scared about it.
25:44It's longer than this.
25:45Whoa.
25:46Mate it's a lot longer than this.
25:47Here it comes.
25:48A super sized sturgeon.
25:49Oh Bob.
25:50Look at that thing.
25:51A bit more.
25:52A bit more.
25:53A bit more.
25:54Get over there lads.
25:55It's easier for you.
25:56Come on.
25:57Come on.
25:58Oh my God mate.
25:59Yeah.
26:00Look at the length.
26:01That is taller than you.
26:02Mate.
26:03Look at the size of the thing.
26:04I told you it's taller.
26:05Bob that's taller than me isn't it?
26:06Mate that is mental.
26:07Seeing a sturgeon of that size was incredible.
26:12Really didn't think it was going to happen.
26:14Not in this place for sure.
26:16But it's not even though.
26:17Yeah.
26:18Yeah.
26:19Yeah.
26:20Yeah.
26:21Yeah.
26:22Yeah.
26:23Yeah.
26:24Yeah.
26:25Yeah.
26:26Yeah.
26:27Yeah.
26:28That's a big part of my face for sure.
26:29It wasn't even in my mind.
26:31But to see one up close, that big, absolutely amazing.
26:36And I got a little evening workout.
26:38Oh, I've done it.
26:40I've got it.
26:41I've got it.
26:42I was worried.
26:43What do you reckon?
26:44I've got him.
26:45That is over 80 pounds didn't it.
26:46Mate for sure.
26:47It is.
26:48Look at that.
26:49Look at that lads and go, wah.
26:52Wah.
26:53What a beast.
26:56What a beast, eh?
26:57Absolute beast. What a creature.
27:00I've never, ever targeted sturgeon.
27:03And look, wow, they come along,
27:05obviously munching the carp bait, if you like.
27:08They clearly like grub.
27:11Come on, Bob.
27:12You can't do it. Squat.
27:14Straight back.
27:15There you go.
27:17Bye-bye.
27:20Not what we were after, but what an amazing creature.
27:24Sturgeon, as a species, are over 200 million years old
27:28and can live to over 100.
27:29And what a privilege to catch one of this size.
27:35Zamora now wanted in on some more action.
27:39So my pal's had a fourth little rod out,
27:42and I'm going to do the same.
27:43He's had a bite off one, and I'm desperate for another.
27:46I'm going for carp, though,
27:48so I'm going to pop this in the boat
27:50and get it on a nice clear spot just in the margin over there.
27:54I was only away again, this time on the margin rod.
28:08Well, I'm glad I never let Bobby get a rod on this spot now.
28:15Only one of the smaller stockies,
28:17but the daytime margin tactic was working.
28:19While he's been busy catching off his margin rod,
28:24I've got mine out now.
28:26Eight foot of water, a bit of bait round it.
28:29Let's hope it produces a nice carp for me.
28:32As another day drew to a close,
28:35would there be margin browsers at night too?
28:38Conditions look good for him.
28:39Well, it's the fourth rod has shot off.
28:55I don't think it's a very big fish,
28:57but it is a fish.
28:59Oh, what is it?
29:01What is it?
29:02What is this one?
29:03Is it a koi?
29:04Look at this of that.
29:05It is a koi.
29:07We got ourselves a koi.
29:10After all that, eh?
29:11How lovely.
29:13How ironic is that?
29:15Should we still be here?
29:17A koi?
29:20It is a koi.
29:21Look at that.
29:22We go all those places, koi lakes.
29:24Don't catch any koi.
29:26We come here, we catch koi.
29:28Bosh!
29:29Well, that's come up trumps.
29:32Fourth rod.
29:33And nabs a koi.
29:36Fantastic.
29:37And not too late in the night either.
29:40I haven't even gone to sleep.
29:41Get some kit, Bob,
29:42because that's a ghost carp, not a koi.
29:48No more fish overnight,
29:50but just after first light...
29:52Let's cut.
29:55There you go.
29:58A little scaly rascal.
30:00I managed my third car for the trip.
30:03Perfection in miniature.
30:08The temperature rose, as did the air pressure,
30:11but so did our work crate.
30:13New rigs were tied and prepped.
30:15Freshly baited rigs were loaded into the bait boat
30:17and then redeployed.
30:19to all our open water
30:20and margin spots.
30:27The open water spots were also topped up
30:30with free bait using a bait rocket
30:32to create feeding zones for the car.
30:34All traps were set.
30:49The open water areas for more night action
30:51and the margins where we hope to nick a carp or two
30:54in daylight hours.
30:55I think what's interesting about this particular lake
30:59and these swims that we're in
31:00is that with this heat
31:02and the amount of foliage around the bank side,
31:05those fish will radiate to that tree line for oxygen.
31:08And that's a wonderful thing
31:10because it gives you options in the daytime.
31:12And of course, you might catch them there at night as well,
31:14but mainly in the day,
31:15those fish will go under that cover,
31:18enjoy the oxygen,
31:19enjoy the shade,
31:20and then hopefully at night they come out.
31:22And that is relatively like it's played out so far.
31:31While the carp chilled out
31:32with the temperatures now at its hottest,
31:34we were both pretty spent too,
31:36so decided to kick back
31:37as we awaited the next bite.
31:41Hello, mate.
31:42That's two of us in here, boy.
31:44That's it.
31:45Hey, goody-o.
31:46What are you?
31:48Rodent.
31:49I can do that.
31:55Wait, Dazzler,
31:56why don't you join me and my furry friend?
31:58No?
31:59You don't fancy it?
32:00Would our hard day's graph come to fruition
32:03when the light faded and the temperature dropped?
32:05Only time would tell.
32:14Bob's asleep again, isn't he?
32:16That is a big fish.
32:20Might have to wake me partner up.
32:24Go.
32:27I'm only going true.
32:28It's got a bit of girth.
32:29It's got a bit of length.
32:31That looks much bigger.
32:33than the 40-pounder I caught.
32:38I think we might have just cracked 15.
32:40Get in there!
32:42It's been a grueler of a day.
32:44We've grafted hard through it.
32:47And it feels like a big reward
32:50is now languishing in my landing there.
32:52I think it is over 50 pounds.
32:55Thanks for waking me up, sir.
32:56But, no doubt, it is worth it.
33:00Any time I have some sort of extraordinary capture,
33:04you are nowhere to be seen
33:05until you get a little tickle.
33:08Come on, Bob!
33:09Right, scales are zeroed, slings all ready.
33:12Come on, you do your bit.
33:13It's the most important part of all.
33:15This, Bobby, I'm pretty certain
33:17is the biggest fish of the trip
33:18by a mile.
33:2054.
33:2354.
33:25And some wriggling.
33:27Well,
33:29that is a belter.
33:31Can't believe we've had done that beef.
33:33Look at that.
33:34Oh, my God.
33:3654 pounds and 4 ounces.
33:40I believe, Bob, that took me by surprise.
33:42Mate, well worth getting me out of bed,
33:45I must say.
33:46I have got fish envy.
33:48Yes.
33:49Yes.
33:52A 50-pounder
33:53always feels great.
33:56Another lake you've been to,
33:58a 50-pounder ticked.
34:00It's just, there's a bedpost at home
34:03and I just knock them on them.
34:0550-pounder bedpost.
34:08What an absolute belter.
34:10One of the old originals
34:12and a big achievement.
34:14I was proper made up.
34:15God, that's wise.
34:17Wicked fish.
34:19We're still time to go.
34:22Coming up,
34:24I'm out for the count
34:25as Zamo goes solo.
34:27Could have done with having me pal there
34:28to help me land that,
34:29but
34:30he's having his beauty sleep.
34:32We were in France and it was hot.
34:43Our plan to fish open water
34:45and the margins to catch carp
34:46in the day and night
34:47was working.
34:48I'd just smashed our 40-pounder mission
34:51for a second time
34:52having just landed
34:53a stunning 54-pounder.
34:55That took me by surprise.
34:58And knackered Zamoora
34:59was still yet to break
35:00his 40-pound target,
35:02but could this be it?
35:05I don't think we're going to get
35:07much sleep tonight,
35:08I'll be honest with you.
35:09A little catfish.
35:17I really, really
35:18don't like catfish.
35:21Look at that.
35:22Slime.
35:23That's why I don't like them.
35:25And I'm sending you
35:26straight back right away.
35:28Go away.
35:29And the action carried on.
35:33Mate, you didn't even let me
35:34get back to bed.
35:37Oh, I'm nicely done.
35:39Nicely done.
35:41A scaly mid-double
35:42from my open water spot.
35:46Hopefully,
35:47this one's over 40 pounds.
35:56Could have done
35:56with having me pal there
35:57to help me land that,
35:59but he's having
36:00his beauty sleep.
36:04There we go.
36:0540 pounds.
36:1212 ounces.
36:14Yes.
36:1640-pounder.
36:18Thick.
36:19Target achieved.
36:21Although,
36:22my little man over there,
36:23he won't know.
36:24Fast asleep.
36:26But I know I've done it.
36:27Yes.
36:29I'm there with you
36:30in spirit,
36:31dazzler.
36:31Well done, bro.
36:39Our penultimate day
36:40and it was
36:41absolutely
36:42roasty-o
36:43by 7am,
36:44but I was feeling
36:45strangely fresh
36:46and ready to rock.
36:47That was eventful.
36:53Sorry I missed
36:53your 40-pounder.
36:54Well done.
36:56I'm glad to see
36:56you're alive and awake,
36:57so I was a little bit
36:58worried,
36:59a little bit concerned
36:59about you.
37:00One thing is for certain,
37:01Bobby,
37:01it is extremely hot
37:03and I've got a question
37:05for you, right?
37:06We are grafting
37:07all through the day,
37:08all through the night.
37:10How does that compare
37:12to high-level
37:14football sport?
37:16Very different
37:17to the football.
37:18You know,
37:19it's 90 minutes,
37:19bang,
37:20get it done
37:20and chill
37:21or it's this
37:22absolute grind.
37:23Do you think then
37:24that carp anglers
37:25all around the world
37:27could or should
37:28refer to themselves
37:30as athletes?
37:32Endurance athletes.
37:33Mo Farah's
37:34go all day
37:35and night.
37:37I've always felt,
37:38I have always felt,
37:39You're an Olympic athlete.
37:40I will toast to that
37:42with a little fist bump.
37:44Right,
37:44let's go and sort
37:44the rods out.
37:46Oh, you're there,
37:48get us some ice cream.
37:49Will do, mate,
37:50but after I've done
37:51my morning workout routine.
37:53Bobby referred to fishing
37:54as a,
37:56I suppose,
37:56similar to being
37:57a marathon runner.
37:59Iranians
37:59are famed
38:00for their wrestling.
38:02Now,
38:02I don't want to run
38:03any marathons,
38:04but I wouldn't mind
38:05a good old wrestle
38:05with a massive calf.
38:07I've got that in me
38:07any time of the day.
38:09Yes,
38:09well done,
38:10Dazzler.
38:11Lovely netting, sir.
38:12I'm an Iranian wrestler,
38:19not a very good
38:20Iranian boxer.
38:21I don't want to.
38:25And Zamora makes
38:27a good sprinter.
38:28What a savage take.
38:30From an athletic stocky.
38:33So small, Bob,
38:34I don't think
38:35I can catch him in there.
38:36Daytime bites.
38:39Daytime bites.
38:40We like
38:41daytime bites.
38:44God,
38:45Bobby's even faster
38:46out the blocks
38:46than you.
38:50During a break
38:51in the all-action
38:52carp Olympics,
38:53it was important
38:54to keep focused,
38:55so I had
38:56a high-calorie
38:57competition
38:58lined up.
39:01Athletes,
39:02important
39:03to get your calories
39:05in throughout the day.
39:07Nutrition,
39:07big part of your career?
39:08Yeah,
39:08of course.
39:09It's all fuel.
39:10It's all fuel.
39:10I've got
39:11the perfect fuel.
39:12We've got to pack
39:13as many of these
39:14down as we can.
39:15Okay.
39:16Yeah,
39:16you up for it?
39:17Yeah.
39:17As long as it's not
39:18escargot.
39:19It ain't chicken breasts.
39:22I've got
39:22the perfect
39:23summertime
39:24icebreaker.
39:27Ooh.
39:28What is it telling?
39:29So as many as we can?
39:30Eat literally
39:31as many as you can.
39:32Ten minutes
39:33to eat
39:33as many ice creams
39:34as humanly possible.
39:36Easy.
39:37I've got this
39:38one in the bag.
39:39Right.
39:40Set the timer, Bob.
39:41Set the timer.
39:43What have we got in us?
39:44Do you know
39:44that I've actually
39:45got dairy
39:47intolerance?
39:48So I
39:49am going to have
39:50a stomachache later.
39:51Might have to borrow
39:52a bucket.
39:59Numeric
40:00Oh,
40:01these are pistachio.
40:03Getting hard
40:04already.
40:06Who's not
40:07there with this?
40:08Quite
40:08disappointed
40:09with my performance,
40:10Bob.
40:10I'm not relishing
40:11in this
40:11like I thought
40:12I would.
40:13But if I'd enjoy
40:14more,
40:14I'd better power
40:15them through.
40:15This one was hard
40:16work.
40:16It was a bad
40:17decision.
40:18I'd like putting
40:18on the wrong
40:19bait.
40:19good decision.
40:28Great decision.
40:29That one.
40:30That's going to
40:31take me to number
40:31four easy.
40:33How many more
40:33have you got in you?
40:34One more than you.
40:37That's such a good
40:37action.
40:38Oh, my God.
40:43Wow.
40:45You have just
40:45chung that down.
40:47That's...
40:48Right.
40:54How long is it?
40:56Five minutes
40:57from now,
40:58Bob.
40:59Starting to get
41:00delirious.
41:03Three and a half minutes
41:04to go, Bob.
41:06Stupid,
41:07stupid challenge.
41:16One minute left.
41:17Oh.
41:20Five.
41:25Four.
41:27Three.
41:29Two.
41:30One.
41:33You've won by an
41:34inch.
41:35You started seven.
41:37I'll give you that,
41:38Bob.
41:38Disgusting.
41:39I'm not the man I
41:40thought I was.
41:42I feel like I've been
41:43both physically and
41:44mentally beaten in
41:46that particular
41:47escapade.
41:48I actually enjoyed
41:49eating escargot
41:50more, I think.
41:52I won the challenge.
41:53There's no prize.
41:54Hopefully, the carp
41:55gods will say,
41:56listen, you've done
41:57very, very well.
41:58I'll give you a
41:59massive, big carp
42:00to celebrate.
42:01Does anybody want
42:08an ice cream?
42:13We both hoped we
42:14had time to digest
42:15before any more
42:16action.
42:19Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
42:22But the carp gods
42:23were having none of it
42:24was this Zama
42:25whose big reward.
42:27Yours truly was on
42:29hand like a coiled
42:30spring for netting
42:31duties.
42:32Go on, Dazzler.
42:33Oh, it's a nice
42:34looking fish.
42:35Dark.
42:36Oh, it's a good fish.
42:37It's all right.
42:38Go on, Bob.
42:40Hey.
42:42The margin rod
42:44has done a little
42:45bigger.
42:48Almost 40 pounds
42:49off the margin.
42:51Oh, butterfingers.
43:00As the sun started
43:01to set on our
43:02final evening,
43:03Zama got his margin
43:04rod back out on the
43:05spot for maybe
43:06the last time.
43:07On reflection,
43:08this lake had been
43:09kinder to us than
43:10we'd originally
43:11thought it would be.
43:14We've done all right.
43:15I'm happy with what
43:16we've caught,
43:17but have we got
43:18one last big moment
43:20in us with a little
43:21tiny smidgen bit
43:23of time left.
43:25The endurance
43:25carp marathon
43:26was entering
43:27its final stage.
43:29Buckle up, Bob,
43:29for hopefully
43:30more night action.
43:34That could be
43:35a decent carp,
43:36that.
43:38A golden deceiver,
43:40but still about
43:4135 pounds.
43:43Ha, ha, ha, ha.
43:45A mint fish
43:46stove by any
43:47standard.
43:50And we are in.
43:53Think it's a carp?
43:54Yep, that's
43:55definitely a carp,
43:55Bob.
43:56He must be tired.
44:00Looks about 30 pounds.
44:01Nice one.
44:02Now off back to bed.
44:10Only hours now remain
44:12before we reach the
44:13finishing line.
44:15Did we have one more
44:16big carp in us?
44:19Yeah, it's a bite.
44:23That was a positive bite.
44:27Feels heavy.
44:32It's a big one, mate.
44:34I can feel it.
44:37Oh, see colour?
44:38Oh, yeah, I see a fair bit of colour.
44:41That's a common and all.
44:42Oh, it's big, mate.
44:43Oh, it's a big one.
44:44I'm getting in for that, Bob.
44:45Throw the net forward, mate.
44:46That's a cheese-o-rama.
44:49Here's that net.
44:50That looks big.
44:52Oh, God.
44:52Come on, get in that net.
44:56Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
44:58Oh.
45:00Oh.
45:01That is a good leaving present.
45:03A big golden common.
45:05That's what we wanted.
45:07Well done, mate.
45:08Brilliant.
45:09It wasn't a giant,
45:11but still a big old French carp.
45:14Oh!
45:1840, 44, 10.
45:21Oh.
45:23Oh, that's a nice one
45:24to go home with, mate.
45:26What a bar of gold.
45:27What an end to an amazing trip.
45:29Thank you, partner.
45:30It's been a pleasure.
45:31As always.
45:31Robert, that is what I believe
45:35they call a bobby-dazzler.
45:38There you go.
45:39A picture postcard
45:41to say goodbye with.
45:43In these conditions,
45:44in this heat,
45:46we both had a target of 40 pound.
45:48We both succeeded.
45:49Ali's gone on to the 50s
45:51and a huge bar of gold at the end.
45:53What a week.
45:54There's a real mixed bag
45:55of wonderful carp in here.
45:56Those scaly stockies
45:58which we got to enjoy,
45:59but the ones we really wanted
46:01were those wily old originals.
46:03So to cap it off,
46:04to finish the session off
46:06with one of those,
46:07c'est bon.
46:09We will find you
