The Grand Fishing Adventure S02E04
Transcript
00:00Go on, Lukey.
00:02This is where he says, it's come off.
00:03Your hook's stuck in a rock.
00:12Let's get over there, boy.
00:13Two friends.
00:14Boom.
00:15Look at that.
00:17On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:19Want a piece of this action, Bob?
00:20Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:23Hey.
00:24And that's more like it.
00:25And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:27I'm an Iranian wrestler.
00:28Abracadabra.
00:30Woo.
00:31This series we're touring Spain and France.
00:34Look at that.
00:36On our greatest mission to date.
00:38Did you see that?
00:39Well done, Tesla.
00:41It won't all be plain sailing.
00:43Whoop.
00:43I'm actually scared.
00:45It's a stingray.
00:46But we will be trying to catch the biggest and best fish.
00:50What a beast, eh?
00:51What an achievement, mate.
00:53Yes.
00:55This is the grand fishing adventure.
00:58Yes.
00:59Wow.
01:00That is close to the rig.
01:01Mate, that is massive.
01:02I was not expecting that.
01:04Oh, Dazzler.
01:05Oh, Dazzler.
01:06I haven't been this excited in ages.
01:10Southern France, underwater ground fishing adventure special.
01:28What are you feeling?
01:28Ooh.
01:29What are you feeling?
01:31Mate, I'm excited.
01:32It's just going to be fascinating, really, to see how those fish react.
01:35Ooh.
01:36Ooh.
01:37Ooh.
01:38Ooh.
01:39Oh, folks.
01:40You're in for a belter.
01:41We can't wait.
01:42We can't catch something.
01:43It could end up like a whole damp squid.
01:45What is a squid?
01:46What is a squid?
01:47Yeah.
01:48Don't know.
01:49It's been very exciting times and the long drive was nearly over.
01:53We were now within touching distance to our chosen venue, which was in southern France, approximately
01:59200 kilometers south of the well-known town of Bordeaux.
02:03And don't be fooled by the industrial backdrop, this lake sits in the shadow of the famous Pyrenees
02:09mountains.
02:10Bobby boy, we're going through the hallowed gates.
02:13We're either going to look like a pair of mugs, or it's going to turn out very glorious.
02:18Mate, whatever it is, we'll get some interesting content, I'm sure, underwater.
02:24We've arrived at the mighty Ictus, a French fishing holiday destination with three mega lakes,
02:35each holding huge fish.
02:38King carp to 80 pounds, koi carp to 45 pounds, and mind-blowing sturgeon, 20 varieties to over
02:47200 pounds.
02:48Insane in the membrane.
02:50Oof, oof, oof.
02:54You are going to need a gym session, mate, if we're going to end up landing some of these
02:57things that are in here.
02:58But more importantly, like, I have caught sturgeon in the past, have you ever been lucky enough
03:02to have tried?
03:03Never caught a sturgeon, mate, no.
03:04Erm, a take to the air, I would love to see that here.
03:09You love a little tail walk, don't you?
03:10Tail walk.
03:11Give us a tail walk, go on, what would you like?
03:12Go on, go on.
03:13No, no, no, come on, man.
03:14You've got to leave the ground a bit.
03:15You used to get up in the air, didn't you?
03:16Like, leap right, some aura, go on, give us one, go on.
03:19Right, let's do it.
03:20Come here, come here.
03:21Let's do it together.
03:22Ready?
03:23Ready?
03:24Sorry, pal.
03:26Referee.
03:27We'd been told the other end of the lake was the best area this time of year for sturgeon,
03:37so that's where we were heading to set up camp.
03:39I've seen this lake on the internet and I've seen some of the giants that are in here.
03:43I'm desperate to get off the mark and catch my first sturgeon.
03:46Whoop.
03:47Are you all right in there, Bob?
03:48Yeah.
03:49I've caught plenty of sturgeon before, but I'd never actually targeted them in a session.
03:55Plus, I'd never caught a big orange coey either, so I was buzzing.
03:59It wasn't too long before dark, plus our diver who'd be setting our underwater cameras wasn't
04:05flying until late at night, so although we were chomping at the bit to get fishing, we'd
04:09have to wait till the morning.
04:11Early doors, we were met with a beautiful French dawn and our rigs were ready to rock and roll.
04:26Oh, go on.
04:27You were a sturgeon in the former life, weren't you?
04:29Definitely was.
04:30You would eat that, wouldn't you?
04:32Big bit of protein all day long, big old fish.
04:35Knee down.
04:36Yeah, so protein, beefed up tackle as well.
04:38We've got like a 50 pound braided hook link on here, okay?
04:42Then we've got our super, very aggressive mechanism here that recoils, so it's set,
04:49and as soon as the fish touches that hook bait, it goes bang and sets in.
04:53So they won't like that either, right?
04:56And then we've got a nice strong leader, again, about 50 pound, okay, going to 20 pound mainline.
05:01So it's much higher than what we'd normally use for carp.
05:04So that's one rod.
05:05And then on the other rod, again, I think it's a technique they've probably not used on here before.
05:10You've got that plastic-style cage packed with paste, loads of the traction.
05:16Good that.
05:17And then a PVA stick on all of them will be threaded down.
05:20You'll know how good they are, don't we?
05:22Amazing.
05:23Well, listen, mate.
05:24Waited long enough.
05:25Let's catch some.
05:26Let's go catch some sturgeon and orange carp.
05:29Beautiful.
05:30Time for operation rig deployment.
05:34My first rod was off down to my right, pretty tight to the margin.
05:38Bob went with a little white pop-up on his first rod, down his respective margin,
05:43but a little further from the bank on a ledge.
05:46We also put two more rods out each.
05:54These were all out in the open water at varying depths.
05:57Bring on the sturgeon.
05:59Next, the exciting part, the underwater cameras.
06:04Cue our very own James Pond, AKA Luke.
06:09Look at that sturgeon.
06:13Luke swam out and carefully placed a small camera by hand,
06:17near to four of our rigs that were in shallow enough water.
06:21Top work, Pond, and good to see you left our spots.
06:24Shaken but not stirred.
06:29I'm a little bit scared.
06:30Are the fish going to react as normal?
06:33Is there going to be extra disturbance in the Walthworth diver?
06:37Only time will tell.
06:39The clock started to tick by as we nervously awaited some action.
06:57My right hand rod in the margin was getting the odd bleep.
07:02In fishing we call these liners, but what was causing it?
07:05Often it can be smaller nuisance fish or bigger fish brushing line.
07:10Well, we were about to find out as James Pond had retrieved the camera
07:14and he was about to present us with some highlights of the underwater footage.
07:18LAUGHTER
07:19Oh, OK.
07:20Oh!
07:21Oh!
07:22Oh, Bob, look at that!
07:24Mate, that is huge.
07:27How have you...
07:28What the...?
07:29Well, it's just...
07:30Mate, that is massive!
07:31Here's another clip.
07:32Oh!
07:33Oh, my God, look at this.
07:35Straight...
07:36Oh, that's eating!
07:37Oh!
07:38Oh!
07:39Wow!
07:40That is close to the rig!
07:42That is huge, mate.
07:43Honestly, the size of those sturgeon are a joke.
07:47I was not expecting that.
07:49One more.
07:50Right, let's have a look.
07:53Mate, look at his mouth going!
07:55Look at his mouth going, look!
07:57That is madness!
07:58Mate, we need to get one of them.
07:59Oh, my God.
08:00That is incredible, man.
08:02And that is just down there!
08:04Wow.
08:05I think, seeing that, I've got to change the hook bait
08:09because even though I've got a lot of attraction, it's very down
08:12and they're almost like...
08:14They're a little bit off the bottom, so they are like a vacuum cleaner.
08:17Yeah.
08:18And my hook bait resembles a little bit like hair
08:21interwined with the carpet.
08:23OK.
08:24And I want to change it to, like, a biscuit
08:25that'll go shoot straight into the vacuum cleaner.
08:28In layman terms to a fisherman, that is to make it into a snowman rig.
08:32Look, Bob, what do you think?
08:34Yeah, yeah, I understand it.
08:35That could do the job.
08:37That is fascinating.
08:38Yeah, mate.
08:39It's unbelievable footage.
08:40It's great to see.
08:41It's amazing being able to see those fish coming in and feeding.
08:45Bit different to the way carp feed as well.
08:47They're sort of coming in, hitting the bait and scooting straight off.
08:50So, yeah, I think they're not really picking an individual bait.
08:54They're just hoovering everything up and off they go.
08:57Time for some rig tweaks.
09:01The next challenge was to try and convert one of these sturgeon chances,
09:06a rig mechanics tweak on a couple of the rods,
09:09which would hopefully complement the sturgeon style of feeding.
09:12The trusty snowman rig.
09:14The first new rig was dropped over my right hand margin where we'd seen all the activity.
09:28Within seconds of Luke placing the underwater camera, the sturgeon was straight on the bait.
09:33Surely it wouldn't be long to find out if the rig tweak would work.
09:38Nerve-wracking but mega exciting times.
09:40The little tweak worked.
09:41Well, it is bite time, isn't it, pal?
09:54Ah, well, I think it's felt like bite time for a while.
10:08Coming up, something's not right.
10:13Bizarre fight, mate, if I look.
10:15I don't know what it is, mate.
10:17I couldn't tell you.
10:18We were in France for an underwater special and we were first targeting sturgeon to over £200.
10:33I just hooked one after a rig change following some underwater intel.
10:37The little tweak worked.
10:40It was action stations and Zambo wasted no time in trying to get his waders on as you need to land these beasts in the water.
10:48Bizarre fight, mate.
10:50Yeah.
10:51I was expecting a lot more runs.
10:54Yeah.
10:55It's like it's just stuck to the bottom.
10:57Maybe it's a stingray.
10:58Stingray.
10:59Oh.
11:02Oh.
11:03Oh.
11:04Oh.
11:05Something just didn't feel right.
11:06If I look.
11:07I don't know what it is, mate.
11:09I couldn't tell you.
11:11Then it came free.
11:12Oh, here we go.
11:13You seeing it?
11:14Look, look, look.
11:15Oh, wow.
11:16Yeah.
11:17Oh, where is it?
11:18Wrapped.
11:19No, no, no.
11:20Oh, it's in the...
11:21Oh, it's around the H block.
11:22It's caught in the mouth.
11:23Look.
11:24There you go.
11:25Go on, Bob.
11:26Grab its tail, son.
11:28Wow, that's why it's got H block round it in a camera, probably.
11:32That's why it had been such a strange fight.
11:35The sturgeon had caught itself around the H block, which was a floating marker on a cord to mark the spot.
11:42In a replay, you can see the line was caught around the camera too, which must have also taken out the H block as the fish swam off.
11:49But it didn't take us long to free the sturgeon and remove the hook too.
11:54Got it.
11:55Yeah.
11:56Yeah.
11:57Whee!
11:59Look at that.
12:00A proper prehistoric zoo creature that is, Zammo, isn't it?
12:03They are actually prehistoric.
12:04They were about with the dinosaurs.
12:06Is that another weird Zammo fact?
12:08No, it is a fact.
12:10Look at that.
12:11A proper specimen.
12:12So, so pleased to be able to show you one of these.
12:16Incredible and just exhilarating, seeing them feed underwater, getting a taste of how they're feeding and being able to make a little tweak.
12:25And it works.
12:26Great to see Ali catch a sturgeon.
12:29It's really whet my appetite.
12:31I don't really care how big.
12:32I just want to catch one myself.
12:34The first sturgeon I'd ever caught that I'd purposely targeted.
12:38Around £60 and it was later identified as a Cuba sturgeon.
12:43Pomme de terre.
12:44No more action overnight and with only the daytime left to go on this lake, the number one priority was for Bob to catch his first ever sturgeon.
12:59We had a plan and it involved moving one of his rods to the right hand hotspot.
13:03My partner in crime.
13:04Share the love.
13:05Show me those spots.
13:06It's all about you today, son.
13:08You are going to catch a big old sturgeon, so both the margins are yours.
13:13Let's get stuck into them.
13:15Super one.
13:16Come on then.
13:17But before we could get salted, one of his other rods was away.
13:26Oh.
13:28Just when we were about to put one of his rods from last night's ripped off.
13:34Margin's all the way.
13:36Margin's all the way.
13:38Go on, son.
13:40But then the Dazzler run into a problem.
13:43Oh.
13:44The line was solid.
13:46We feared the fish had snagged itself on a steep marginal shelf or in heavy weed.
13:51Sammo tried changing the line angle to free it, but to no avail.
13:57Time for our secret weapon.
13:59Double O Heaven.
14:01Go on, Lukey.
14:02Here we go.
14:03What's he got?
14:04What's he going to come up?
14:05This is where he says, it's come off.
14:07Your hook's stuck in a rock.
14:09There he goes.
14:14Here he goes.
14:15My heart is actually pounding a little bit.
14:18I'm a little bit nervous.
14:19Why are you nervous?
14:20Yeah, I am.
14:21Are you?
14:24Still on?
14:25I think it's free now.
14:28Oh, you're back on, Bob.
14:29You're back on.
14:30It's in close.
14:34Go on, the Dazzler.
14:35Top work from Luke.
14:37The Sturgeon was now nearly ours.
14:40I'm just going to scoop it in now.
14:42Till it tell walks into my face.
14:45Well done, Bob.
14:47There you go.
14:48My first Sturgeon.
14:52How about that?
14:53Absolutely buzzing.
14:54No idea what variety it is.
14:58Buzzing.
14:59Get in there.
15:02It turned out to be a Danube Sturgeon.
15:04We estimated it was between 30 to 40 pounds.
15:12Time was now virtually up on the Sturgeon mission,
15:15but just enough remain for Bob to get a rod on the margin spot
15:18I'd been fishing and where we'd seen the majority of the underwater action.
15:23Could we winkle one more L?
15:40Whoa, there it goes.
15:41Yeah.
15:42Beer on.
15:43Here we go.
15:44A short, intense battle and the Sturgeon was in very close.
15:48Coming to you, huh?
15:49Yeah.
15:50Here it comes.
15:51Oh, it's a long nose.
15:52Oh, it's head-butted the floor.
15:55Oh, that is quite big actually, Bob.
15:57I'm bullying.
15:58I'm bullying.
15:59I'm bullying for you.
16:00About 60 pounds of solid Sturgeon.
16:02Whey!
16:03Well done, Bobby!
16:06Amazing, mate.
16:07Buzzing.
16:08We're going to head to the carp lake with wind in our...
16:12Sails?
16:13Biceps.
16:14Biceps.
16:19The underwater footage was amazing.
16:21Helped us make adjustments.
16:23We both caught.
16:24Mission accomplished.
16:25On to the next.
16:26A beautiful Siberian Sturgeon.
16:29A mega fish.
16:31What a result.
16:32We came for some Sturgeon.
16:33We caught them very quickly,
16:35which has bought us a bit of time to head on to the car plate.
16:38Never caught that little dream orange koi,
16:40but at the same time none ever actually fed on the spot
16:43because we had some underwater footage to prove it.
16:49Top angling partner.
16:50Now for the main event.
16:52And we didn't have to travel far.
16:56The epic carp lake.
17:00A 35 hectare water with varying depths of 3 to 33 feet.
17:06With tree-lined margins and a bottom like an egg box in places.
17:10With multiple bars, humps and bumps all over the lake.
17:13As features go, a carp anglers dream.
17:18The stock too was also pretty mind-blowing.
17:21Ahead of around a thousand carp from stockies of 20 to 30 pounds.
17:25With over 200 carp over 40 pounds.
17:28Including multiple 50s, 60s, 70s.
17:31With one beast that has tipped the scales at an eye-watering 84 pounds.
17:35The team mission is a 40 plus carp.
17:41For me, obviously got my personal best.
17:4363.
17:44Can I beat it?
17:45There's fish in here that can do that for sure.
17:47We had five days on this lake with a mission of catching a carp of 40 pounds or more.
17:54And our eye in the sky had already located a decent head of carp along a tree-lined margin between swims 5 and 6.
18:01Luke, our underwater diver, also went in stealthily with a camera to take a closer look subsurface.
18:08And the footage was pretty amazing.
18:10Some smaller stockies, but also one or two chunks estimated at 50 to 60 pounds.
18:16Hey, Bob, that's a joke over there. There's some big ones there, mate. We can't ignore that.
18:26We can't be turning down the opportunity to catch 60s, surely.
18:29But that's a one-rod spot. So, me being me, I think you should go in there and fish that spot.
18:37Mate, to be honest, I'm happy. I'm on cloud nine still from the sturgeon, so I don't mind if you want to jump in there, really.
18:42No, no, no. I really think you should go for them.
18:44OK, thanks. Cheers.
18:49The big question was, would the carp stay there?
18:52In late spring, they do tend to move around lots.
18:55So the Dazzler would need to concentrate and get the rod in position. ASAP.
19:06One for the rig.
19:08Very funny, Zamo. Now focus.
19:11He was using a snowman setup, the same as we used on the sturgeon lake,
19:15a bait orb filled with paste, topped with a fruity pop-up boilie, then boilies, worms and tigers as freebait.
19:22Rawr!
19:23All of which were deployed using the bait boat.
19:26Rather than going right under the tree snag, as that could cause problems,
19:30he found a clear spot a metre or so off it.
19:33And the rig was dropped.
19:42With the rig now out, Luke wasted no time positioning two underwater cameras,
19:46both pointing at Bob's rig, but already we could see there were far less carp in the area.
19:57Out in front of Swim 6 was open water of about 30 feet.
20:01Not to miss a fishing opportunity, I decided to put on two zig rigs, floating plastic bugs that would sit just under the surface,
20:08to hopefully trick a cruising carp in the upper layers.
20:11Bob and I were sharing the rod pod, him on the left with my two on the right.
20:15No cameras on my rods though, as the rigs were sitting too deep, but at least we could keep an eye on Bob's spot.
20:21And these carp looked like they could be on the move.
20:29A couple of hours passed by without a single bleep on any of the rods.
20:33Then suddenly we started spotting carp, but on the other side of the lake.
20:41Oh look!
20:44That is so typical.
20:45You set up one place and then, lo and behold, they're all jumping somewhere else.
20:51Well it feels like all of them.
20:53We presume that the bulk of the carp had moved out from the tree snag
20:56and were now out in front of Swim 9 opposite, one of the only areas on the lake that was line-free with no anglers.
21:04Bob, in this type of situation, I believe patience is a virtue.
21:08Sit on your hands.
21:09Oh, come on, wind him in!
21:11Let's get over there, boy!
21:16Coming up, some gold underwater intel.
21:19Ooh, carp!
21:21Now you're talking.
21:22That's a big one, isn't it?
21:23Look at the size of that!
21:26We were in south-west France with a mission to catch a 40-pound-plus carp,
21:36some of which we'd already spotted on our underwater cameras,
21:41and we were about to move swims after seeing carp boshing in front of Swim 9, which was free.
21:46Time was of the essence as only a few hours of light were left.
21:50Cue operation.
21:52Rapido set-up.
21:56We've done it. That was quick, wasn't it?
22:03Sharp. Sharp. Sharp.
22:04Are you feeling sharp?
22:05Sharp.
22:06Sharp!
22:07Let's go!
22:08Ha-ha!
22:09Rog's in we go!
22:10This time, I had the choice of sides.
22:13Earlier, Luke the diver had checked out the tree line on the left-hand margin,
22:17positioned the camera, and scattered some bait.
22:19The footage revealed a few large carp in the area, and they were feeding.
22:25So a no-brainer, I went for the left.
22:27It not only had a margin with carp present, but also several bars a little further out.
22:32So I put out two rigs, one tight to a tree line at a depth of around nine feet, and the second on a plateau in six foot.
22:42Bob had open water out in front of him with a large bar off to the right with depths of around seven foot.
22:50So he put one rig on the bar.
22:55With the other just off it in much deeper water of around 25 feet.
22:59It wasn't long before all four of our rods were in position, just as the light levels started to fade.
23:07During the day, the carp had been active in the upper layers.
23:10The big question, would they drop down and feed as it called?
23:29It was the rig close to the marginal snags, and the carp was trying its best to get in them.
23:36Wow, we just give that some absolute beasting to get it out of them trees.
23:42Ooh, first evening in the swim.
23:47I hope we are in.
23:49Oh, right, OK, relax, you've got it out.
23:51How does it feel, pal?
23:53Feels all right, Bob.
23:54Actually feels all right.
23:56Fighting well.
23:57Yeah, I'm not expecting a 20 pounder to pop up.
23:59Put it that way.
24:00Come on.
24:02What a cracking trip we're having so far.
24:04We just need a carp to get us off the mark on here, and we are flying.
24:11Bob, he's got some lighting for us.
24:14Doesn't like the torch.
24:15Doesn't like the light on it.
24:17Camera shy.
24:19It put in a good fight, but would it meet our mission weight of 40 pounds plus?
24:24Here we go.
24:27No.
24:28No, we don't.
24:29No, we don't.
24:30Push it out, push it out.
24:31Push it out.
24:33Wee!
24:34We're off the mark.
24:35We're off the mark.
24:37Is it 40 pounds?
24:39Oh, I don't know.
24:40I think it's mid to upper 30, personally.
24:44Less than I thought.
24:46What?
24:47Room for improvement.
24:4831.15.
24:49Oh.
24:50Good opener.
24:51Well, congratulations, pal.
24:52Good opener.
24:53Good man.
24:54Good man, please.
24:55Oh, that's an absolute pearl.
24:59I bet that's whet your appetite, innit?
25:01Yeah, definitely, mate.
25:02One hell of a start, pal.
25:03So, well done.
25:04Long may it continue.
25:06Four full days ahead of us.
25:08Let's hope this start was a sign of good things to come.
25:12Nothing more during the night, and the following day was uber high pressure.
25:28Clear skies are mega hot, disastrous conditions for catching carp.
25:33We could see plenty of them in the upper layers enjoying the sunshine, which was quite away from our rigs.
25:41The rods had been out in the swim for almost 24 hours, so time to review the underwater footage to see what had been going on.
25:49This is the spot that I caught the carp off.
25:53Erm, so let's see what has happened, because I have no idea.
25:57So it's carp CCTV.
26:00Oh, Terry the Tinker.
26:03Ooh, ooh, carp.
26:05Now you're talking.
26:06Now you're talking.
26:07Look, that's a big one, innit?
26:08Look at the size of that.
26:09That's good.
26:10Oh, but...
26:11Oh, that's spooked away.
26:12Oh, yeah, he didn't like something.
26:14Look at how much it's moved the rig, look.
26:16Oh, wow.
26:17And how much bait it's moved.
26:19Now this is your spot.
26:21Whitehook bait.
26:25Not much fish.
26:26Is this a still, or is this an action film?
26:28Because there's not a lot going on here.
26:30Looks like a still.
26:32Do you like having Luke here, with this added element?
26:36It's a good insight, but it also adds to the frustration.
26:41They're definitely in the area, aren't they?
26:42Well, we see them about.
26:43So, yeah, they're certainly not feeding in this particular location.
26:47So it's...
26:48Is that a conga reel?
26:49Because you are deep enough to catch a conga reel, aren't you?
26:52Not on this one.
26:53Not on this one.
26:55He's on the shelf.
26:56Only joking, it's not really there.
26:58The fish are in our swim.
27:00They're just really, really not interested in eating.
27:03They're in that upper layer of the water.
27:04We can see them on the drone.
27:05They're just enjoying the sunshine.
27:07Something has to change.
27:08Hopefully the weather changes, forces them down.
27:11And then we've got a little bit more of a chance.
27:14The rest of the day passed by without even a sniff of a bite.
27:17And we both even put out a third rod to up our chances.
27:21We were now putting our faith into a night bite.
27:37The cooler temperatures overnight didn't spur the carp into feeding on our spots.
27:41And again we were faced with tough fishing conditions once more.
27:45The 40 pound target was now feeling a mega hard task.
27:49As our morale had dropped pretty significantly.
27:52Bob tried going super long with his third rod to the swim boundary where we could see carp on the drone.
27:59And I tried worms as a hook bait, usually irresistible to carp even in tricky times.
28:05But only Terry the Terrapin seemed interested.
28:08But there was a glimmer of hope.
28:10A big weather front was due overnight and the wind was already starting to pick up.
28:15The weather is due to change today.
28:21We are getting a little bit of a breeze shall we say.
28:25Hopefully a gust.
28:27Coming into rain and bring on the fish.
28:38But the night brought us nothing and just 48 hours remained on the carp lake.
28:45At first light before the underwater cameras were in position.
28:52Zamo was finally away.
29:01There is a God.
29:06I'm going to play this.
29:08So tentatively.
29:11Today is a good day Bob.
29:13Come on.
29:14What's this going to be down here?
29:16What's this going to be?
29:19I have seen it.
29:20I can confirm a sighting.
29:21It is a Cyprius Carpio and it is yours Bobby.
29:25And it's quite chunky.
29:28I think that's definitely a 40 pounder.
29:32I think it's definitely 40 Bob.
29:34The Dazzler was now in serious mode as he knew this could be target complete.
29:40Go on.
29:41Little turn of the head.
29:42Little turn of the head.
29:46Yeah.
29:47It's Bobby.
29:48You're off the mark my old dancer.
29:50Yeah.
29:51No blank.
29:52Blanksaber.
29:54Yeah.
29:55Someone's happy.
29:57Get in there.
29:58Come on then.
30:00What have we got?
30:02Had he done it?
30:03Was it over 40?
30:04It was going to be very close indeed.
30:10Ha!
30:16Go on then.
30:1741.
30:19I'm going to call it 41.5 because it's going 41 to, you know, you're just not as strong as you used to be.
30:25Oh, well done son.
30:28Yay!
30:29Mission accomplished.
30:30Mission accomplished.
30:31Oh, brilliant.
30:32Only took us two carp.
30:33Yeah.
30:34Ah, easy.
30:36Only need one shot, one goal, one fish, one 40 pounder.
30:40Job done.
30:43Yes!
30:44Are you happy now?
30:45Mate, really happy now.
30:47Sturgeon, tick, 40 pounder, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.
30:51Boom!
30:55What a result.
30:56The weather change had played its part and Zamo converted the chance with just over 24 hours to go.
31:03Could we score again?
31:07Now that I've had the 40, the dream obviously is to beat my PB.
31:11My French PB is 63 pounds and there's a good number of fish in here that can beat that.
31:16No more carp were caught over the next six hours, so he took the opportunity to find out what had been happening subsurface on Bob's spot, which a few days ago was void of carp.
31:30Right. Ready?
31:31Yeah.
31:32Clip one, Roberto.
31:35Look at the size of that.
31:37And?
31:39And it's eating.
31:40That is spectacular.
31:43Look at that.
31:45Look, it's sitting with its belly to the floor, chewing.
31:49It's chewing its food because it's an old fat carp.
31:53That is an absolute dinner plate and a half, isn't it?
31:55Look at the shoulders on it, Bob.
31:57If that came up to the surface...
31:59Oh, we would be screaming.
32:01Just the shoulders alone.
32:03Insane.
32:04Next.
32:05Oh, it's back.
32:06Is that the same one?
32:07That's your hook bait, Bob.
32:08Did you see that?
32:09Go back.
32:10Let's have an action replay.
32:11Dazzler, it's touched your hook bait.
32:14Oh, it's missed it by...
32:15It's mouthed it.
32:17By millimetres.
32:18Well, it's literally mouthed it, but not taken it in.
32:21Are you feeling good?
32:23I'm a hell of a lot more positive than I was a few days ago, that's for sure.
32:26When we reviewed the camera, not a single fish in sight.
32:30Nothing.
32:31Not even in the distance.
32:32So this is very different.
32:33Oh, Bob.
32:35This is a lot of activity.
32:36Is that the same fish?
32:38It's a different chunk.
32:40Look at that one.
32:42That's eating back of spot.
32:44Bob, you've got tanks, mate.
32:45This is like a military scene.
32:48That is huge, mate.
32:49That is 60 plus.
32:51So this was an hour ago.
32:53So they're still in the area.
32:55My hook bait's still out there and I'm still in with a chance.
32:57I think the great thing with the weather change was to actually see fish going to the bottom and eating something.
33:03That gives you hope.
33:04The fish are eating.
33:06When they're eating, you've got half a chance.
33:09Well, there are a couple of fish in there that I think were over 60 pounds.
33:12So, so close to my PB.
33:14Maybe bigger, maybe smaller.
33:16But they're there and they're feeding.
33:18It's nervous times here.
33:21Not long to go.
33:23Can we squeeze one more in?
33:25The dream of catching a carp on an underwater camera was also at the forefront of our minds too.
33:31But that could only happen during the hours of light, which would have to wait for tomorrow.
33:36In the meantime, would our last night in France bring an even bigger stamp of carp?
33:41Nighttime bite. In the boat.
33:51A cheeky French rascal that took me on a midnight boat trip.
33:59Meaning we'd now had a 20, 30 and 40 pounder.
34:04Now where was that 50?
34:05GERF to it.
34:12Jeez.
34:18I've got to land this fish.
34:19I was just a bit astonished.
34:24I'm kicking that.
34:27Yes!
34:29Don't say that too loudly.
34:30I might wake someone.
34:31That, I think, might do us 50.
34:38About an hour till sunlight.
34:40So we'll put this in the sack and have a proper look when the sun's out.
34:46Talk about playing it cool, Rodders.
34:49That looks massive.
34:51Or am I still dreaming?
34:53Coming up, could this be the greatest ending ever?
34:56I have to wind us underwater.
34:57Oh, God, this is too much stress.
35:09During our final night in France, a stealthy bob banked yet another banger.
35:15Yes!
35:17I'm going to say it too loudly. I might wake someone.
35:18Apparently it was close to the 50 pound barrier.
35:22Well, we're about to find out.
35:27Oh, yeah, you've smashed it, Bob.
35:3054...6.
35:33Call it 54-6.
35:35Well done, Desla!
35:37Love it!
35:39Absolutely brilliant, mate.
35:40Super, pal.
35:41What a carp.
35:43Wowzers.
35:45A 50 pounder, mate.
35:47So we've had a 20, a 30, a 40, and a 50.
35:50Have we got time for a 60?
35:55Oh, Desla, what an achievement, mate.
35:58That is brilliant.
36:00You buzzing?
36:01Absolutely banging, mate.
36:03Absolutely buzzing.
36:04A little bit of a condition change.
36:05And, er, this is the result.
36:07Brilliant.
36:08Yeah!
36:09Come on, Bobby, give him some yes!
36:10Yeah!
36:11Yeah!
36:12Yeah!
36:13Yeah!
36:14That's an absolute grand fishing adventure monster.
36:17Call you a big cheese.
36:19Got to call him, like, the silent assassin,
36:22because this morning I woke up, I had no idea whatsoever
36:27that Bobby had caught an absolute leviathan.
36:31A stark contrast from what we saw at the start.
36:33No fish in the swim, then to fish feeding in the swim,
36:37resulting ultimately in that huge 54-pound mirror carp.
36:42Patience is a virtue.
36:45It certainly is.
36:46And if he'd not stuck with his spots,
36:48then this brute of a carp surely wouldn't have graced his net.
36:52Thank the Lord for underwater intel.
36:55Wish we could have a diver every trip, eh, Zamo?
36:58And just look at that for a Tina Turner.
37:00That's slang for a returner, by the way.
37:03Spectacular!
37:05What an incredible carp Bobby has caught.
37:08Exactly why thousands of people come to France for carp fishing.
37:12But with that underwater footage,
37:15we know there's even bigger ones out there.
37:18You know?
37:19He's been seconds, millimetres away from catching
37:23probably his personal best from France.
37:25But that PB dream was still alive
37:29as we had just a few hours left.
37:31The rods were out, the underwater cameras were in position.
37:34Could we manage an injury-timed golden goal
37:37with an even bigger monster all captured on camera?
37:40Come on the carp gods!
37:41Then, out of the abyss, near Bobby's spot came a shape.
37:54A carp.
37:56A huge carp.
37:59Was our ultimate ending about to play out?
38:02Oh!
38:03That's a...
38:04That's the right that's underwater.
38:05Come on you beauty.
38:08This was the moment we'd dreamt of.
38:09Oh, Bob mate.
38:12Oh!
38:13I'm getting landing there.
38:14Oh God, this is too much stress for one trip.
38:18Whatever happened we just went on.
38:20And we just went on to the left.
38:21We just went on to the right.
38:23This was the moment we dreamt of.
38:25Oh, Bob mate.
38:27Look at that.
38:28I'm going to land in there.
38:29Oh God, this is too much stress for one trip.
38:35Whatever happened, we just went on to the left.
38:36whatever happened we just had to land it so we took no chances and got in the
38:42boat and out to the fish ASAP this was Bob's rod on the end of the bar where
38:46we'd seen the 60 pound plus carp the day before there were plenty of underwater
38:52snags between us and the carp so we wanted to get over the top of the fish
38:56to stand the best chance of landing it a proper heart-in-the-mouth moment for us
39:01both Luke the diver followed us out too to see if he could film the fish
39:06underwater during the battle what to buy just shredder yeah we thought it was
39:16gone as Bob's line had pinged off something but the carp was still on
39:20steady Samo it snags central down there Luke was nearly at the boat so that would
39:26give us an extra underwater angle constantly feeling it going over lines
39:30or rocks or trees it's interesting no it's nerve-racking I was trying to keep
39:39calm as this was showing all the signs of a real biggin but I was a nervous wreck
39:44myself oh that is big Bob that is massive mate mate I saw some size I think I saw
39:54some size stop letting your tip go slack you'll make it you'll go oh it's there
39:59it's there right underneath now oh my god directly below us now this was the vital
40:07part of the fight with the carp on a short line directly by the boat one wrong move could end in
40:13disaster Bob had to play this potential PB Buster to perfection this was the do or die
40:21moment our World Cup winner was now in Bob's hands oh that is massive in it that is a serious
40:30serious serious car pop of his plane this could be your PB Bob this could be your PB from France
40:40oh here it comes oh the size of that thing are you nervous a bit oh it's flicked off its feet
40:54flicking just right it's gonna breathe here we go get ready get ready I'm keeping the tension
40:59corner corner por brother corner oh yes that is a cheese man look at where
41:22Get in there, lads.
41:29You're going to finally give me a kiss?
41:32I've got a kiss off Bobby.
41:34Times are good, man.
41:39Unbelievable.
41:40The butterflies.
41:42I haven't had butterflies like that
41:43since walking out playing for England.
41:47God's honest truth.
41:48He was crying out in the lake.
41:52I want to cry now.
41:53It's just the best, best fishing moment I've ever experienced.
42:01We just made carp fishing history.
42:04There's no one's caught a carp that big on an underwater camera.
42:07A truly unbelievable moment,
42:10but was it about to get even better?
42:12Would history be made again?
42:14Was this carp Zamo's new French PB
42:17or could it even be his biggest carp of all time?
42:21We were about to find out.
42:24Here we go.
42:25Bobby, I think you have just smashed your French PB
42:29would be my guess.
42:34I've seen some big carp.
42:37This has got it all.
42:39Right, I don't want you to see this.
42:42Hang it.
42:42Let go.
42:47Let go.
42:52Tell me, mate.
42:54Bobby Dazzler, what was your PB globally?
42:57£68.
42:58Bobby Dazzler, come here.
43:00I would like you to look at the scales.
43:03Well done.
43:04You have just smashed your PB.
43:05Oh, amazing.
43:11Amazing.
43:12You're leaving.
43:14I never thought I'd get one kiss from Bobby Zamora,
43:17but to get two in the space of 35 minutes,
43:20this is a magnificent moment.
43:23Mate, let's get her in that sleeping nap.
43:24Take your sunglasses off.
43:25I want to see you crying.
43:26Oh, man.
43:28Ready?
43:28Three, two, one.
43:29Oh, my God, Bob.
43:32Absolutely over the moon.
43:33A struggle at the start.
43:35We went 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s.
43:39Now, 60s to absolutely cap it off.
43:43Mate, you couldn't ride this.
43:45You really, really couldn't ride this.
43:46Oh, absolutely unbelievable.
43:50Look at the head on it.
43:51The head.
43:52I haven't even caught this, Bob,
43:54and I'd say this is the greatest fishing moment
43:56that I've ever experienced as a carp angler.
44:00This is what it's all about, mate.
44:02In the middle of the day, bright sunshine,
44:05southwest France.
44:07What a trip, mate.
44:08Well done.
44:09Well done.
44:11The biggest carp I have ever, ever caught in my life.
44:15I mean, just holding that thing up.
44:16It was so hard.
44:1869 pounds, 8 ounces of absolute ginormous mirror carp.
44:25The ultimate end we could have ever dreamt of
44:28was to catch our biggest fish of the trip underwater.
44:32And that happened.
44:33That really happened.
44:34And it was a fish beyond our wildest dreams.
44:37We never expected something like that to happen, but it did.
44:40Just been a crazy week,
44:48and just how it's all come to an end now
44:50with this last fish being 69 pounds
44:54and my new PB,
44:56I mean, really, really, genuinely
44:58couldn't write a better script.
45:02Oh, there's your script, lads!
45:04Don't waste it!
45:07Oh, that's in my eye.
45:10Don't drink alcohol at home, kids.
45:13Thank you very much.
45:14That's in my eye, Paul.
45:15All that was left to do
45:18was release the incredible creature
45:20back to where it belonged.
45:22A true grand fishing adventure
45:24that we'll never, ever forget.
45:26Thank you, France.
45:27We've loved it.
45:28And well done to Luke, our diver.
45:30And of course, that grand fromage of a carp.
45:33Sweet Caroline
45:36The times never seemed so good
45:42I've been inclined
45:47To believe they never won
45:53But now I
45:56Look at the night
45:58And it don't seem so lonely
46:03We feel it
