00:33whoa that's a lot that's a lot his tiny little desk traumatized him as a big man
00:40hey how you doing we got you a desk yeah we got you a real small it's tight squeeze it's like one
00:51of those high school desks where it was like the chairs built in that is crazy those those desks
00:56there's the guy there oh yeah no you got to get him a big desk this six foot two 360 pound new york
01:03public library employee claims he was traumatized by being forced to work at a desk that was way too
01:08small and he wants 4.6 million to make up for it i need a bigger desk i'm sorry what's that sir
01:15i need a bigger we don't really have this everyone kind of works out of this desk area so you just
01:21have to uh sit here with everybody it's uncomfortable i well i understand that but then maybe then maybe
01:26this isn't the job i need 4.6 million it seems unreasonable it seems quite unreasonable i don't
01:33see where the math comes into play how do you little people do this
01:36william martin's tale began in october 2021 when he was told he had to work at the first
01:44floor service desk seen here at the library on fifth avenue in midtown he had to work at the lower
01:51part of the desk you see how tall that lady is she's only five six yeah this lady's kneecap
01:58yeah at the desk i can't work at this tiny desk uh this welcome desk features a staggered countertop
02:05with a roughly 12 inch drop and he said as a big man it was crampy why didn't he go to the
02:12taller desk because this is where he was ordered that's his workstation i mean okay comfortable if
02:20we put you dave at a tiny little desk yeah which basically i have been but like you i have to cross my
02:26legs in this direction in order to sit down your legs wouldn't even be able to fit underneath
02:30like if you had these keyboards that i deal with do you have keyboards underneath you don't have
02:35anything i have the where we plug our headphones into yeah side so it's we got this thing here
02:42what do you got down there there's one you can't like you can't stretch our legs oh yeah i know you
02:46have to go sideways i got a man spread towards lisa we're gonna have to yeah we need a lawsuit

03:31through the trauma of that what'll make it better money just lots of it 4.6
03:36i came up with a random number

03:42what's that on the pain scale
03:47that's a 4.6
03:49it's like a rickzer scale
03:55oh that's a 4.6
03:57yeah my knees oh my knees oh
04:00yeah he hits his knee a couple more times it's going up
04:05it's going up

04:16you know like those photo fold out tables they put them up
04:20and i went to slide my chair in at this banquet and my knee hit one of the supports i didn't realize
04:29where like the leg was going to be and i was like
04:314.6
04:34you better sell some more mustard joli
04:37i do that
04:39you better
04:39all the time
04:41that is my life
04:42it's awful
04:42that's my life
04:43you remember my knee
04:44oh you better flatten out some chicken and dry it out
04:48really dry it

05:01my one knee i'm like
05:02ah
05:034.6
05:04listen to that noise
05:08it makes like a creek like an old piece of wood
05:12you guys know when i was in going to physical therapy for my knee
05:15he said it was the way i was sitting at work
05:18that was the major contributor to it
05:20yeah
05:20so when my back was a mess
05:23and and it was like just
05:24devastated
05:25uh i was in a chair
05:28that used to have arms
05:29and so the arms would stop me here
05:32and then i was like having to reach
05:35way over
05:37and so that's why my back was
05:38so did you have a hunchback for a while
05:40i did i did
05:41and also you uh could not get
05:43i could get hard
05:44i mean that's
05:45that's just
05:46that's just normal
05:47yeah that's my blood pressure
05:49don't say that
05:49oh yeah don't
05:50no you're right
05:51don't say that
05:51yeah you're right
05:52yeah uh yeah
05:53it's not the blood pressure medicine
05:54uh no but
05:56when that happened
05:57my whole quality of work
05:59uh physical life
06:01went way up
06:02they gotta bust those things out
06:04what is it
06:04there's nothing even down there anymore
06:05no there is
06:06no all the computers are behind your monitors now
06:09no but there's wires under here
06:11they always every time something goes wrong
06:13they take a panel off
06:14i know they look
06:15but there's like they take a panel off
06:17to look at one little thing
06:18that's like the size of like uh
06:20you know a little box or something
06:22they could bust all that out
06:24so uh
06:25they're not going to this guy in new york
06:27that's suing
06:28um he said all i sought
06:29was a desk with appropriate accommodation
06:32given my larger physical attributes
06:35yeah
06:36his union eventually stepped in
06:38helping him get assigned to a different desk
06:40within the library
06:41but a couple years later
06:43he found himself in the same situation again
06:46a new director was brought in
06:47and they ordered him back to work
06:50at the cramped first floor desk
06:52things only got worse after he complained
06:55so he got a lawyer involved
06:57i would just break it
06:59he's probably so big
07:01that if he just got up real fast
07:03he might pop that whole top of the desk right off
07:05yeah
07:06the whole thing falls apart
07:07yeah like uh-oh i broke it
07:09a few months later
07:10he says he was falsely accused
07:11of sleeping on the job
07:13okay
07:14and later suspended
07:16prompting him to ask for a transfer
07:19and seek medical leave for depression
07:21well it's so boring
07:23yeah
07:23you're not fall asleep there
07:25that's great
07:25i keep just thinking like
07:26you know who has millions to give him
07:28is the library
07:29oh god
07:30not at all
07:31these days
07:32that's what he means
07:33yeah i know i got that
07:34they're like you could be three years late on a book
07:36and it's 25 cents
07:36we're not bringing in a lot of money
07:39this guy who once ran a sports blog
07:42called 300 pounds of sports knowledge
07:44claims his mental health has been damaged
07:47to such an extent
07:48that he just trembles at the thought
07:50of going back to work
07:51how you doing chuck
07:52are you heading back to work anytime soon
07:54i mean that is how i wake up
07:59you normally do that
07:59you tremble every day
08:00on the way in you're like
08:02oh
08:02it's gonna be today
08:04not asking if you chuck the freak
08:07it's your favorite
08:11oh my god
08:11oh no
08:13i love it
08:14it's not Friday is it
08:15martin is asking a judge
08:17to force the library
08:18to approve a leave
08:19along with of course
08:204.6
08:22a spokesperson for the new york public library
08:25claims the case is without merit
08:28saying we take employee accommodations
08:30and concerns with the utmost seriousness
08:32and we're dedicated to treating our staff
08:34across the library with fairness and respect
08:36so okay
08:37so he's asking for 4.6
08:39but realistically
08:40anything they gave him
08:42he'd be thrilled right
08:43like even if they were like
08:45you're not getting 4.6
08:46we're gonna give you
08:47250,000
08:49you'd be like
08:50woohoo
08:50yes
08:51well that's why they do that
08:52right
08:52like that's why
08:53like lawyers
08:54that's a strategy
08:55they scare people
08:56with the big number
08:57right
08:57and then they settle out of it
08:58for much lower
08:59but
08:59I just
09:01I mean he's
09:02I admire
09:04I admire his tactic
09:05oh
09:05it's amazing

09:17no
09:18but
09:19I don't know about 4.6
09:20did they think he was intimidating
09:21almost like a library bouncer
09:23that people wouldn't try stuff
09:25if a big guy
09:25was at the front desk
09:25I think he'd like that
09:26I mean I think that's just nice
