00:00One of our favorite parts of the show is highlighting the talented craftspeople who
00:08contribute to our chopper. We couldn't build a bike without each of them playing a vital role.
00:13That's right, today you'll meet the first of these characters, our painter, who just received
00:18the parts that Dave and John stripped from our 2005 Road King. Since our Detroit Lions bike is
00:24now mechanically sound, the pressure is on to give this big cat the purr-fect paint job.
00:32Meet Rob Paddock of Paddock's Paintworks, where two and four wheeled vehicles are reborn.
00:38Rob's specialty is pre-World War II automobiles. Owners all over the world trust him to return
00:43their one-of-a-kind cars to their former glory. But his expertise extends seamlessly into the realm
00:49of custom motorcycles. With him, as always, is his loyal dog, Tundra. With a tight deadline looming,
00:57Rob has already completed the bodywork and applied a coat of metallic silver.
01:02With a steady hand and an artist's eye, he and his assistant, Mark, apply tape and masks.
01:09Everything covered will stay silver. Anything exposed will be blue or white.
01:13The saddlebags will feature a large leaping lion, an iconic image that will be the focal point of the
01:22bike. Because the lion will traverse both the compartment and the lid, alignment is key.
01:28Projecting the design helps to make this crucial task a little easier.
01:32To the contrary, the fender receives a free hand pinstripe. You just can't beat the deft hand of an
01:44expert. Next, Rob cleans the surface to remove grease, wax, or anything else that can make this a bad day
01:51for a good painter. Then he applies intercoat clear. This keeps the edge of the neck's color clean and
01:58defined. At long last, it's time to mix up the next color. Like a baker reading a recipe, Rob reads the
02:05formula and pulls different tints from his painter's pantry. He carefully weighs each ingredient and then
02:13it's time to shake things up. Behold, Honolulu blue. And just like that, this road-worn veteran has a new
02:22uniform and a new purpose.
02:29On the next episode, it's time to visit old friends. We'll tackle comfort with a new seat and score style
02:35points with some aluminum accoutrements. Don't miss it. Nice work, Rob. Seeing someone operate on that
02:42level is a beautiful thing. Comes from years of dedication and a relentless pursuit of perfection.
02:47That's right. There's so much talent here in Metro Detroit, all contributing to make this beautiful bike
02:52a prize for sports fans and bikers alike. And you can take this bike home at the end of the season.
