00:00Hi. How are you?
00:03Good, thank you. How are you?
00:05Wonderful. The pride of Monroe, Michigan. See, we're in Detroit, so we can mention that.
00:09Yes, I was just saying, hey, that's close to where I was born.
00:13And Monroe, and your family in the book, your grandpa was connected like with Lazy Boy and stuff as well, right?
00:18I mean, it kind of goes back.
00:20Thank you, thank you.
00:21Yes, he was a Lazy Boy distributor.
00:25So, first thing about Uptown Girl, I believe in pickup friends.
00:30Pickup friends are those close friends that, even if you don't see each other for a year or two, you can pick up where you left off.
00:36You are so open in this book, Christy, that I feel like I know you that we're pickup friends from this book.
00:42I'm so happy to hear that. That is great. That's so nice. What a great compliment.
00:50What was the hardest part? Because you share so much.
00:52I wrote down so much about it, and you're so candid about your feelings and what you went through.
00:57And you went through some stuff that no one should ever have to go through.
01:01What were the moments, though, you're like, should I share this? Am I oversharing? Should I stop?
01:07Yeah. Well, yes, that was a.
01:12I knew that if I was going to do this, that I needed to be honest and I needed to give both sides because it's not all wine and roses.
01:22And, and, and in fact, some of the bad things that happen, actually, you end up grateful for them in a weird way because they are the times that teach you, you know, that teach you the lessons.
01:41And, and, and you learn that you have strengths that you, sorry about that.
01:46My phone making a noise there.
01:48Um, phone off.
01:51Um, that you have strengths that you never knew you had.
01:56And sometimes it, you, you've got, now you have something to prove because, you know, you want to be like, no, I'm not going to be just tossed aside.
02:07I'm still here.
02:09And you, you may take on a greater challenge to, to prove yourself.
02:14And so they, you evolve with faster with the bad times, I think.
02:22Well, I was, I was telling my, I tell my two, my, my two kids all the time that, um, the only way to make God laugh is tell them your plans.
02:28The, the, you, you do the best you can every day and you move forward.
02:31And that to me is something else I wrote down, Christy is no matter what happened to you, you move forward.
02:37And as someone who growing up as a young man in the eighties, I, you were the first love of my life and in sports illustrated.
02:44I mean, come on.
02:46And, and to read about you and, and, and to learn.
02:49And I feel again, that pickup friend connection, that's hard to do in a book.
02:54And you've done a wonderful job with it.
02:56You should be very proud of this book is what I'm trying to say.
02:58I, you know what I am.
03:00I, I, right before it came out, I got, I felt very vulnerable.
03:06I thought, wow, I've really put it all out there.
03:08And what if it's, what if people don't get it, you know?
03:13And, and then all of a sudden the, my first friend read it and, uh, and it was actually about my daughter, Alexa's fiance.
03:23He was the first one, Ryan.
03:25And he said, I loved it.
03:27I loved it.
03:28And I know you and I've known you a long time.
03:31And, uh, I'm just, I've discovered things I never, ever knew.
03:36And, uh, it's incredible.
03:39And then now, you know, this week, I mean, I've been doing all the, the, the view, the today show, you know, all this Kelly Clarkson and, and everybody and every, every person across the board is raving about it.
03:56The, the, the digital editor at the, the, the, the digital editor at the today show had tears in her eyes because it touched her so much.
04:02She, so many parts when she'd hit it to ask me a question about her, her eyes would well up with tears.
04:07And, um, so I think people really are, are connecting with it and getting something out of it.
04:17Um, because it started out with just the idea that I wanted to give people a nice diversion, really some interesting stories.
04:29But, and, and, and the thread through it is kind of, you know, cause my dad always said, baby, you write your own script.
04:39And so I wanted to make it a good script.
04:43And so I was sort of weaving away that way.
04:46And then you realize that it is up to you to write yourself out of those bad moments and to write yourself a solution and, and change it.
04:57If it, if you're unhappy, if you're hurting, you have to change it.
05:03I love that, Christa Brinkley.
05:04And, um, yeah, it's, it's great.
05:06And I'd be remiss of a couple of things.
05:08First of all, um, I love that you took a photo of the cast of Vacation so you could make sure you knew their names.
05:15You were snapping pictures on the set.
05:16I love that.
05:17That's so thoughtful at the same time.
05:19I'm like, that's just wild.
05:20But in the moment you did that.
05:22Yes, I know.
05:23And when I saw it too, I had the exact same thought.
05:26It made me laugh.
05:27But you know, we had no idea.
05:28It was the first Vacation movie.
05:30Obviously Chevy Chase was already, you know, the Saturday Night Live star.
05:35We all loved him.
05:37And we were all like Chevy Chase crazy.
05:40But I thought, you know, just in case, you know, someday.
05:44And when I did come across that picture, I just had to laugh.
05:50It's, it's such a wonderful moment too.
05:52And then the thing that made me crack up too, and so much talked about Billy.
05:55And obviously, I mean, you, your life with Billy Joel is one of the most documented weddings of the last 50 years.
06:01Marriages.
06:01It just is.
06:02It is.
06:02And you do a beautiful job in the book of telling both sides of that story.
06:06And I don't want to get into that because it's been, it's been dealt with a lot.
06:09And I encourage people to read the book.
06:11But I love the fact that you, after you met at the St.
06:14Barth's, right?
06:15Yes.
06:15You went out and got The Stranger on cassette and we're listening to it to kind of vibe off his music.
06:20I love that.
06:21Yes, I did.
06:24And, and, oh, listening to his voice, that really, I think I really was very seduced by it, you know, I, I was, and I, and then, and of course he knew how to seduce with his piano.
06:39And that's what he does, you know, he does it so well.
06:43But I remember one, the first night that I went back to his apartment, which was at the, you know, where the Ritz Carlton in New York is, that used to be the San Maritz.
06:55And there was, he had like a duplex at the top and had huge picture windows with New York City sparkling through the windows.
07:05And he sat down at the piano and he started to play, oh my God, can you tell I'm tired from the tour?
07:13You've been doing this a lot, Chris.
07:14New York State of Mind, right?
07:16Wow.
07:17New York State of Mind and there's the city right there.
07:20And I, I felt like I am inside of the music.
07:26Like I am, I am inside that, I'm in New York, the sparkling lights, Billy at the piano, me on the piano bench next to him.
07:35It was a moment.
07:37A beautiful story.
07:38Christy, you are always welcome here in the Motor City.
07:40We'd love to have you come visit sometime.
07:41Bring the book here.
07:43We'll set up the whole thing.
07:44And you, you're amazing.
07:45It is a wonderful read.
07:46God bless you.
07:47Keep doing what you're doing.
07:47Stay strong.
