00:00:00Well this really is the big time the V8 supercars have raced in the Middle East before in Asia and in New Zealand
00:00:11but this is our first ever Australian V8 supercar championship event on American soil
00:00:17at this incredible circuit of the Americas the format for this afternoon
00:00:23two 100km races with a compulsory pit stop so they've already done qualifying for both of those
00:00:29and Fabian Coulthard will start from pole position for the race that they're gridding up on right now
00:00:35if this is your first taste of this place and this circuit well you will be blown away like the rest of us
00:00:41in a great Aussie field here we've got some 2,000 Australians have made the trek
00:00:46the crowds are starting to pour in the temperature is certainly hitting the high of the day predicted 35 degrees
00:00:52we'll touch on that a bit more but let's crunch the numbers of this 20 turn circuit
00:00:57and with the high temperatures and how busy this racetrack is the boys are in for a wild ride this afternoon
00:01:03for a couple of 100km races there's our racetrack anti-clockwise in direction
00:01:08average speed just a little over 140km an hour Matt slowest corner 70km at turn 15
00:01:13our fastest corner is a ripping sweeper 180km an hour at turn 2
00:01:17top speed down this main straight that we're looking at here on the approach up to the top of the hill
00:01:22at 240km an hour it's super super smooth but the curbs are harsh it's pretty hard on brakes
00:01:29and the grip continues to improve as more rubber goes down and the surface cleans up
00:01:34that gives you some indication of the elevation here and you can see what a great view we've got of the
00:01:38400 million odd dollar circuit of the Americas location the boys at Team BOC a bit of didgeridoo action
00:01:45Australian style down on the grid for the pole man Fabian Coulthard
00:01:48great performance for him in qualifying actually went three tenths of a second quicker in his second qualifying but put him into P3
00:01:57gee there's a great atmosphere around town this is a big university town it's graduation weekend there's a lot going on in Austin Texas and
00:02:05they have all come to see what they call the thunders from down under the Aussie V8s roar
00:02:12ladies and gentlemen please rise and remain standing and turn your attention to the podium or your video screen as the color guard of the University of Texas presents the flags of the great state of Texas and the United States of America
00:02:30and now to deliver the invocation the chaplain of V8 supercars the Reverend Gary Coleman
00:02:44let us pray our gracious Father and Almighty God we are thankful to be here today in this great state of Texas and this country of such great freedoms we are thankful to be able to enjoy our sport and the exhilaration of the
00:03:00celebration that it brings you have made us to be people to enjoy pleasure and we excel in doing so but we are not unmindful of the tragic storms of the Dallas area and we lift up those families who are suffering that they might have strength and courage as they try to recover
00:03:16Lord we're asking today for safety and all that happens along pit lane and along and around the circuit areas for all our crews and officials as they act responsibly in their tasks as we recognize our need for you help us to treat each other with great respect we ask all this in the saving name of Jesus Christ amen
00:03:37and now ladies and gentlemen continue standing remove your hats to sing our national anthem Austin's own Brennan Lee
00:03:49Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars
00:04:17O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming and the rocket's red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof
00:04:47through the night that our flag was still there O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free
00:05:17the brave and the game and the home of the brave.
00:05:28And now to sing the national anthem of the home of V8 supercars introducing Austin's own Australian native pop sensation Miss Bonnie.
00:05:42Australians, oh, let us rejoice, for we are young and free.
00:05:52We've golden soil and wealth for toil.
00:05:57Our home is girt by sea.
00:06:01Our land abounds in nature's gifts of beauty, rich and rare.
00:06:11In history's page and every stage, Advance Australia Fair.
00:06:21In joyful strains and let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.
00:06:34And that is a wonderful moment.
00:06:42Miss Bonnie has been living in Texas for the past few years.
00:06:46But a couple of years ago, guys, she was working in the V8 Supercar Paddock Club at Sydney Motorsport Park as a 16-year-old.
00:06:55She's got a connection with this sport.
00:06:57We turn up now in her city and she gets to sing the Australian anthem, national anthem, before we have our first ever race on American soil.
00:07:06Barretts, what a moment.
00:07:07Yeah, it sure is, Matty.
00:07:08Special piece of history for Fabian Coulthard, too.
00:07:10He will start on pole for the first race of V8 Supercars here at Austin.
00:07:14Fabian, the view out the front of your car here is just remarkable.
00:07:17Straight up the hill to turn one.
00:07:19How do you attack this tricky turn?
00:07:21Yeah, look, it's obviously because it's uphill, the braking can be quite late.
00:07:24So, you know, I'm on the prime position, obviously, being on the inside.
00:07:28You just got to leave this square white box in front of me okay and hopefully get a good start.
00:07:32Do you feel that sense of occasion, having pole for the first time at this circuit?
00:07:35Yeah, it's always a great feeling, obviously.
00:07:37You know, the national anthem just seems a pretty emotional time, quite touching for, you know, everybody here.
00:07:42You know, it's good to see there's a lot of Australian fans over here, over in Austin.
00:07:46So, we'll try and put on a good show like always.
00:07:48Go get it, mate.
00:07:49All the best.
00:07:51Yeah, and talking about that passion, seriously, down here on the grid just then, that group of people up there,
00:07:55they're obviously all Aussies.
00:07:56You should have heard the cheer go up at the end of the anthem.
00:07:59It was first-class effort.
00:08:01Anyway, look, quick chat to Will Davidson.
00:08:03Will, on the third grow of the grid, mate, you know as well as I do,
00:08:06the best opportunity for you to move forward is going to be in the kerfuffle
00:08:09over on the busy part of the circuit on the first couple of laps.
00:08:12Hey, Larko, wasn't that something else, that anthem?
00:08:14Oh, wow.
00:08:15I tell you, I love the passion from Americans and hearing their anthem
00:08:19and followed by the Aussie anthem and the Aussie, Aussie, Aussie.
00:08:22Got hairs on the back of the neck standing up, so let's go racing now.
00:08:25But we're in a solid position.
00:08:26I think from what happened yesterday, our race car's better than the qualifying car,
00:08:31so let's see what happens.
00:08:32All right, mate.
00:08:32Good luck.
00:08:32Will Davidson enjoying the emotion of this moment
00:08:39and there will be plenty more to come.
00:08:43So the crowds are fired up.
00:08:45The drivers are absolutely ready to go.
00:08:48Are you ready to join us?
00:08:49Because in just a few moments, the V8 supercars will unleash
00:08:52their rough-and-rumble Aussie-style of racing.
00:08:55Don't miss it.
00:09:02The Australian V8 supercars are on American soil for the very first time
00:09:13and the first man to start a race from pole in our category here
00:09:16is Fabian Coulthard, heading up the hill on his formation lap
00:09:20in the Lockwood Racing Holden Commodore car number 14.
00:09:23As we welcome our viewers on speed across the country,
00:09:26a very special moment for us.
00:09:28I'm Matt White, alongside me in commentary,
00:09:30five-time V8 supercar champion,
00:09:33six-time Bathurst 1000 winner Mark Skate,
00:09:36and also, as always, the voice of V8's Neil Crompton.
00:09:39You've done quite a bit of racing in these parts,
00:09:41winner of seven super touring races back in 1997.
00:09:44That was a long time ago, Crompo.
00:09:45Riding the Indy Lights and the Indy as well.
00:09:48It's a homecoming for you.
00:09:49It's been great this week to catch up with so many old friends
00:09:53and enjoy this.
00:09:54And this is a great moment for Australasian motorsport
00:09:57and for us to connect with North America
00:09:59is very important for V8 supercar.
00:10:01Really looking forward to it.
00:10:06So let's take a look at the Fuso starting grid.
00:10:08We'll check out the field as they line up
00:10:10for this 13th race of the championship season.
00:10:13Coulthard on pole, second career pole,
00:10:14chasing win number three.
00:10:15Alongside him is Win Cup.
00:10:17Craig Lowndes, position three.
00:10:19Then David Wall, career best, position four.
00:10:21Watch out for a strategy play from him.
00:10:23Then we've got Will Davison and Jonathan Webb
00:10:25a scare yesterday with that oil line
00:10:26that came off Jonathan Webb's car.
00:10:28First man at this venue was Mark Winterbott
00:10:31in position seven with Garth Tander.
00:10:32Then Rick Kelly, best qualifying of the season.
00:10:35Great job in the Nissan Altima from Alex Premmer.
00:10:38Sixth top ten qualifying performance.
00:10:41Positions 13 and 14, James Courtney and Scott McLaughlin.
00:10:44James is one of four drivers to have had
00:10:46American racing experience.
00:10:48One of the others is right there, Alex Davison.
00:10:50He also raced in the US.
00:10:52And then we've got young Chas Mostert
00:10:54who only joined our main game at the last round
00:10:57and is making a sudden impact already.
00:10:59Mauro Engel is from Germany.
00:11:01This is his first year in our category.
00:11:03James Moffat comes off the back of the great weekend at WA
00:11:06where he posted Nissan's best result,
00:11:09an eighth place in the final race in WA.
00:11:12In fact, he had three top tens across that weekend.
00:11:15When we get to the back of the grid,
00:11:16there will be a change for our viewers
00:11:18who checked out qualifying Shane Van Gisbergen,
00:11:2128th position for car 97.
00:11:23He originally qualified ninth,
00:11:25but he has been excluded for a Park Fermé infringement.
00:11:28They checked the tired pressures
00:11:30before they left Park Fermé.
00:11:32So the Giz, the Kiwi,
00:11:34who opened the season with a Clipsel 500 victory
00:11:38is now starting from the back of the grid.
00:11:40And, Matt, this start will be unbelievably important
00:11:45for Fabian Coulthard
00:11:46because his last start from pole in New Zealand was really poor.
00:11:50It cost him the race meeting.
00:11:52And the way that he needs to get off the line today,
00:11:55up this hill, look at this, 35 degrees.
00:11:58The temperature out there at the moment
00:12:00and the run into turn one will be vital.
00:12:04That's 95 Fahrenheit for our local viewers.
00:12:07So you know it gets hot around here.
00:12:09In fact, that's exactly what they were predicting today.
00:12:11So we are going to start this race
00:12:13at the hottest period of the day.
00:12:16And they'll come under the control of our
00:12:18starter Damien White.
00:12:21We've got six V8 supercar champions on this grid.
00:12:26And for Jamie Wincup,
00:12:27and there is Damien White
00:12:28at the starter control area.
00:12:31Jamie Wincup, he's looking for title number three on the run.
00:12:33And he's fit.
00:12:36So this is race 13 of the championship
00:12:38and it's one for the ages
00:12:40in the history books of Australian motorsport.
00:12:42America, the Aussie V8s are good to go in Austin
00:12:45but it didn't go well for Fabian Coulthard.
00:12:47And for short, Jamie Wincup will lead them up this hill
00:12:51down to turn one.
00:12:53His teammate wants to have a look
00:12:54at Coulthard on the inside.
00:12:57So Craig Lowentz, very aggressive.
00:12:59And there goes Scott McLaughlin.
00:13:02It's been hit.
00:13:03The left-hand rear wheel's hanging off that car.
00:13:05It's been a lot of damage to the left-hand rear.
00:13:07You want to go really steady now.
00:13:09Have a look at the start of Wincup.
00:13:11Trouble in the mid-pack here as well.
00:13:12Two cars.
00:13:13One of them was an HRT car.
00:13:15And that's McLaughlin.
00:13:16Big slide for Murrow Engel.
00:13:19He's in the ditch.
00:13:21That might be a safety car
00:13:22because it's parked in there.
00:13:24This is V8 supercar racing
00:13:26at its best on the opening lap.
00:13:28It is on for the lead.
00:13:31Great job, Wincup.
00:13:32But the rest of the field,
00:13:33have you seen as much chaos as that?
00:13:36Safety car boards the flags.
00:13:36Safety car boards the flags.
00:13:38So right at the back of the shot,
00:13:40McLaughlin was just beginning to understand
00:13:42the mess at the back of his car.
00:13:44Meantime, as they plunge down through the S's.
00:13:48Here we go.
00:13:49There's McLaughlin with that damage to the left rear.
00:13:51That happened at turn one.
00:13:53Murrow Engel's problems unfolded down through the S's
00:13:56through three, four, five.
00:13:58There were cars going everywhere.
00:13:59One of the Ford Performance Racing Pepsi cars
00:14:02was off there as well.
00:14:03Yeah, it might tow link or something.
00:14:05Doesn't look too good.
00:14:07That's the voice of Scott McLaughlin
00:14:08in car number 33, Jiu-Jitsu Racing.
00:14:1119 years of age,
00:14:12the youngest ever winner of the V8 supercar race,
00:14:15having his first trip to the United States.
00:14:17And this is a blessing for Fabian Coulthard.
00:14:21That was a really bad start.
00:14:23He had a massive gap to Winkup,
00:14:26who got away brilliantly.
00:14:28And now, with the safety car out,
00:14:30that gap will be closed.
00:14:31So that will help Fabian.
00:14:33Winkup, a winner of three races already this season,
00:14:36leads the championship by 65 points.
00:14:38Normally, when you gift him a lead like that,
00:14:41whether it's on the first lap or mid-race,
00:14:44you're made to pay for it.
00:14:45So you're right, Scaifey, he will be...
00:14:48Coulthard will certainly be thanking his lucky stars and stripes.
00:14:53There's a safety car in the first lap here.
00:14:57What happened was there's the obvious compulsion
00:15:01to try and do the best you can when the tyres are cold
00:15:03and everybody gets scrambled.
00:15:04But essentially, that run down through,
00:15:07really from turn three all the way down to turn seven,
00:15:10is essentially a single racing line.
00:15:13So when you go side by side down there,
00:15:15there's going to be trouble.
00:15:16And that's exactly what unfolded on cold tyres.
00:15:19So that car will be parked there for some time.
00:15:24And they're under the control now of the Chrysler Peders STP safety car.
00:15:27Here's the replay of the start from on board Scott McLaughlin.
00:15:30We're riding with him on the run-up to turn one.
00:15:32It's always aggravation-filled in the mid-pack.
00:15:35You'll get a hit there.
00:15:40That started with one of the Kelly cars.
00:15:42It started with Todd Kelly,
00:15:43but it was actually another bump from behind.
00:15:46So quite significant damage.
00:15:48And you can see it's had a bump from the left front
00:15:50and a bump also from the left rear.
00:15:52Yeah, Todd Kelly was just on the back left of Scott McLaughlin, if you like.
00:16:00And he was lucky, Scott,
00:16:01that he didn't run straight into his teammate, Alex Premer,
00:16:03who was up on the crest of the hill in front of him.
00:16:05So the voice in the background there
00:16:12is Mark Dutton, engineer for Jamie Winkup,
00:16:15and he's reminding that when the safety car lights go out,
00:16:17there can no longer be any porpoising of the car,
00:16:19cycling the brake pedal and the accelerator,
00:16:22nor weaving to warm the tyres.
00:16:23They've got to maintain a clean, calm, single file.
00:16:28What about the winners and losers here, Mark?
00:16:29Green flags, green flags.
00:16:30Jonathan Webb, great job in the early lapses.
00:16:32Come up two spots up to four.
00:16:34David Wall, back two spots.
00:16:36And David Reynolds, five positions from his qualifying spot.
00:16:40Well, for our speed fans, you're going to love this.
00:16:42This is a rolling start, effectively,
00:16:43because this is now well and truly game on.
00:16:47And it's a bit of boxing dice going on here.
00:16:50Mid-pack.
00:16:53Do they get through cleanly this time?
00:16:55There's enough space now to work it all out.
00:16:58That hard turn back down towards turn two.
00:17:00The road drops away almost 20 metres from the mark.
00:17:04And they're flying 24 and a half on the way up.
00:17:06Garth Tander just put that move on in car number two
00:17:09for position six for the whole racing team.
00:17:12Wrapped in the Australian flag around the rear flanks of the car
00:17:15for this weekend.
00:17:17And I saw Shane Van Gisbergen with some weird attitude on the car
00:17:19in the background there in the VIP Petfoods entry.
00:17:22So it's Wincup from Coulthard.
00:17:24There's Lowndes in the Red Bull entry.
00:17:27Fourth at the moment is Jonathan Webb.
00:17:28It's a good clean start for Jonathan.
00:17:30Next in the queue is Will Davison.
00:17:32Garth Tander, as we mentioned, David Wall was the victim
00:17:35in that passing move up to turn one.
00:17:37Then Rick Kelly, he was in a big battle with Mark Winnebottom
00:17:40in the rundown of turn one.
00:17:42And then you've got Russell Ingle just on the edge of the top ten there
00:17:45in the Stanley Tools entry.
00:17:46There he is, the black and yellow car.
00:17:49This is turns, approaching turns 16, 17 and 18.
00:17:53And there goes Tim Slade.
00:17:56Heavy hauling to Australia Racing Mercedes.
00:17:58Little assistance there.
00:18:00So we talked up the fact that these guys push and shove.
00:18:03You'll see plenty of it at the opening laps.
00:18:04Now Lowndes looking threatening here.
00:18:06The balance of Fabian's car doesn't look ideal at the moment.
00:18:09A run to the last corner for Craig Lowndes.
00:18:12No space.
00:18:14He hangs on the Kiwi.
00:18:15He's in the right spot to get down the inside.
00:18:27Lowndes just able to break it deep enough to contain that.
00:18:30Here's Mark Winnebottom.
00:18:32Down the inside of Rick Kelly.
00:18:34Gets that done.
00:18:35Now Rick Kelly, I just spoke to him before he got in.
00:18:37He can't name off then.
00:18:38He can't do that.
00:18:39Talked about in the driver's briefing,
00:18:41expressly mentioned by Cam McConville,
00:18:43that if you escort somebody off the road,
00:18:46we're going to look hard at it now.
00:18:47Talking about hard at it, Russell Ingle up the inside.
00:18:49This is hard.
00:18:50Too wide down through the S's.
00:18:52Oh, Ingle's so close to swiping the back of Kelly's car.
00:18:56Great driving both guys.
00:18:57That was very, very high quality racing.
00:18:59I thought for sure that that car,
00:19:01that bright yellow car that you're looking at, folks,
00:19:03the Stanley car number 66 would just take the shortcut.
00:19:06But that's Russell Ingle.
00:19:07He doesn't take shortcuts.
00:19:09He's a great racing driver.
00:19:10And that was a really good quality,
00:19:12very high speed section of driving.
00:19:14But Winnebottom being struck for that,
00:19:16he cutted him straight off.
00:19:18Courtney, meantime, moved up to 11th,
00:19:19passing Dalberto.
00:19:20I caught a glimpse of it in the background.
00:19:22So both the HRT cars,
00:19:24Colton Racing Team entries,
00:19:26are doing pretty well at the moment,
00:19:27marching through the field.
00:19:29So Coulthard's got a little breather now on Lowndes.
00:19:32Guys, you wouldn't believe the fans in the stands here in Austin
00:19:35are having the best day out.
00:19:36Every time there's an incident on the side of the track,
00:19:38the whole grandstand erupts.
00:19:40I don't think they've seen anything quite like this
00:19:42on this circuit before.
00:19:43Ah, Black Flag, Car 5, failing to give racing room.
00:19:46Mark Winnebottom will have to tour the pit lane
00:19:48in the Pepsi Max entry.
00:19:50So Winnebottom will come in.
00:19:52He'll see the flag this lap.
00:19:53He'll be forced through the lane.
00:19:55And I'm surprised he did it
00:19:56because it was very clearly enunciated
00:19:58in the driver's briefing last night.
00:20:00And he already had the manoeuvre done.
00:20:01He was already there.
00:20:02He'd passed Rick, but it was over and out.
00:20:04So a little push wide is now going to cost
00:20:06Mark Winnebottom severely in this race.
00:20:11Wow, what a couple of first laps.
00:20:15Only 23 to go.
00:20:17And then another 27 this afternoon,
00:20:19and then we'll do it all again tomorrow twice.
00:20:21Don't worry, they'll be coming back for this one.
00:20:23Jamie Winkup now has a 2.1 second lead
00:20:27over Fabian Coulthard,
00:20:28who's getting hunted down by Lowndes,
00:20:31Webb, Davison, Tander.
00:20:32They're all in it.
00:20:33But Mark Winnebottom will tour pit lane
00:20:35and he will drop down the order out of the top end.
00:20:39Circuit of the Americas.
00:20:43At the moment here at the Austin 400,
00:20:46it's a battle for second place.
00:20:49Jamie Winkup's 2.4 seconds up the road from these guys.
00:20:52Fabian Coulthard, who started on pole position.
00:20:55Craig Lowndes is behind him.
00:20:58And Jonathan Webb is waiting.
00:21:00It's a little waiting game here.
00:21:01Lowndes isn't prepared to attack Jess yet.
00:21:03Webb wants to get by Lowndes
00:21:05because he feels as though he can have a shot
00:21:07at the Lockwood car number 14 Commodore.
00:21:10Been a tough start to the weekend
00:21:11for the Pepsi Max crew.
00:21:13Tim Edwards, a black flag to Mark Winnebottom.
00:21:16The last thing you needed.
00:21:17Oh, look, I mean,
00:21:18it's the first time anyone's raced at this circuit.
00:21:20So, look, the guys have got to explore the limits.
00:21:22He's the first person to overtake anyone into turn one.
00:21:25And really, he just needed to feel, you know,
00:21:27he ran a little bit wide on the exit.
00:21:29But, you know, as I say,
00:21:31first time anyone's overtaken a car at that corner,
00:21:33we now know roughly where the braking point is
00:21:35to stay on the track on the exit of the corner.
00:21:37So, look, it's a fair call by race control,
00:21:39but you can kind of understand
00:21:41how Mark arrived in that position.
00:21:43He's forgiven.
00:21:44He's forgiven.
00:21:45It might even be better than that
00:21:47because I'm not convinced at the moment
00:21:48that he's actually been shown that flag.
00:21:50It could have been a bad sportsmanship flag.
00:21:53So we'll get that confirmed for you.
00:21:54It hasn't come up on our computer timing here
00:21:55and normally it would have been signified.
00:21:58So we'll get to the bottom of that
00:21:59and see what the story is.
00:22:00I do know that Todd Kelly has been through
00:22:02for the mechanical black flag for his car
00:22:04because he's got a lot of damage
00:22:05on the left rear corner
00:22:06of the Jack Daniels Nissan Altima.
00:22:09Well, that's just a bad sportsmanship flag.
00:22:12Oh, Lowndes and Coulthard who goes wide.
00:22:15You watch Jonathan Webb pounce here.
00:22:17He's been waiting and waiting.
00:22:18It's not over yet.
00:22:21So Lowndes up to second.
00:22:22It looked like it was going to be three wide
00:22:24as they made the run into turn 17.
00:22:27Then that was never going to work out.
00:22:29Webb's going very well here.
00:22:30New livery this weekend.
00:22:32Changed the look of the car
00:22:34for their primary backer, Darrell Lee.
00:22:36He's up the inside now.
00:22:37Fabian and the Quinn family own VIP Petbirds.
00:22:43A major presence in Australian motorsport.
00:22:45They've also bought Darrell Lee.
00:22:46That company was in a bit of trouble in Australia.
00:22:47They've got a huge presence in this market.
00:22:50Back up the inside is Fabian Coulthard.
00:22:53Crisscross manoeuvre.
00:22:54And he makes it stick on the braking run
00:22:56into turn one.
00:22:57Nice job.
00:22:59It's not quite over
00:23:00because Will Davison's going to buy into this.
00:23:03Around the outside.
00:23:04I wouldn't like to be around the outside.
00:23:07At one of the fastest corners on the place.
00:23:09Fifth gear.
00:23:09It's over 180 km an hour
00:23:12in the first part of that
00:23:13as you turn in there.
00:23:15And the way that the cars get around that section there
00:23:17becomes a single file corner.
00:23:19They've got to find a way
00:23:20to get back into single file.
00:23:22And this is the move we saw.
00:23:24Craig Lowndes.
00:23:25Across the kerb.
00:23:26Up the inside.
00:23:27Little bumping jewel here.
00:23:29And he was probably okay with that part.
00:23:31But the next bit was the interesting bit.
00:23:33We saw all three cars trying to converge
00:23:36before the next right hander.
00:23:38Power steer problems here.
00:23:40And post-race investigation
00:23:42for the incident involving
00:23:43Tim Slade and Michael Caruso
00:23:45and turns 10-11.
00:23:46And we've had a confirmation through
00:23:48it was in fact
00:23:48the bad sportsmanship flag
00:23:50for Mark Winterbottom.
00:23:51So he's been given the benefit of the doubt
00:23:53not the black flag.
00:23:54So board fans can breathe a little easy
00:23:58that their man remains out there
00:23:59in eighth place.
00:24:00This looks like aggravation.
00:24:01It certainly does.
00:24:03Shane Van Gisburgh
00:24:04and up nine positions
00:24:05from the back of the field.
00:24:06Done a great job.
00:24:07He's right up behind.
00:24:09They've also just
00:24:11race director Tim Schenck
00:24:13and has advised
00:24:14bad sportsmanship flag
00:24:15for Craig Lowndes as well
00:24:16for the same thing
00:24:17because he ended up
00:24:18with Fabian Coulthard out wide.
00:24:22Down the inside.
00:24:24Davison now on Dalberto.
00:24:25Dalberto has been qualifying well.
00:24:27He's been racing quite hard there.
00:24:29And Alex Davison
00:24:30down the inside
00:24:30up to the final corner.
00:24:32Down here with Lee Holdsworth's car.
00:24:33We can't talk to the guys
00:24:34who are just physically
00:24:35trying to fix the car.
00:24:35Would appear a power steering problem.
00:24:37So the Merc's not having a good day
00:24:39coupled on that drum
00:24:39with Merrow Engel
00:24:40earlier in the race.
00:24:42You see the race control.
00:24:43Little tower here
00:24:44at the start finish line
00:24:45and they've just put the sign out
00:24:46and the flag.
00:24:47So they've put the number
00:24:48for the car out
00:24:49and that black and white
00:24:50bad sportsmanship flag
00:24:51for AAA.
00:24:52Well, Larko Lowndes
00:24:54just on the fastest lap
00:24:55of the race
00:24:55with a 1.35.4
00:24:57and it's Winkup
00:24:59with a 2.4 second lead
00:25:01while Fabian Coulthard
00:25:03who has started
00:25:04from pole position here
00:25:05has just found himself
00:25:07in a battle from the word go
00:25:08and he continues it
00:25:10with Jonathan Webb
00:25:11who pushes him wide
00:25:12on lap 9 of 27
00:25:14the Austin 400.
00:25:22And look at this
00:25:24Will Davison now.
00:25:26So these three
00:25:26continue to jostle
00:25:28for position number three.
00:25:30Coulthard covers.
00:25:31Davison's on the inside.
00:25:34Around turn 17 and 18.
00:25:36It's the longest right-hander
00:25:37you'll ever see.
00:25:38It just goes on and on forever.
00:25:40Who pops out at the end of it?
00:25:43Well, Coulthard does
00:25:44but that doesn't mean
00:25:45that he's guaranteed
00:25:46because up towards turn 20
00:25:48another rise.
00:25:50Davison has a look
00:25:51on the inside
00:25:52and will jewel Jonathan Webb
00:25:54down the main straightaway.
00:25:57You said that the turn
00:25:58goes on forever.
00:25:59If you're a Dunlop tyre
00:25:59it would feel like that
00:26:00because that long right-hander
00:26:02at 17 and 18
00:26:03has got a major load
00:26:04through the tyres.
00:26:05Makes big temperature.
00:26:07Makes the cars
00:26:08more unstable
00:26:09later in the lap
00:26:10and look at this.
00:26:11Up the inside.
00:26:12Nice work.
00:26:14And that's hip and shoulders too.
00:26:16So Will Davison gets it done.
00:26:17I'm holding a breath
00:26:18to make sure it is actually
00:26:19cleanly locked off here
00:26:20but he has made the move.
00:26:22It took a while.
00:26:23Oh!
00:26:23Oh!
00:26:23He's giving you a bump
00:26:24on the way in.
00:26:27I think that'll be okay
00:26:28in terms of what
00:26:29the stewards say about that.
00:26:31He got a bump
00:26:31from Webb on the way in.
00:26:33That was in the turn
00:26:34from three to four
00:26:35in this section of road.
00:26:37How wild is it?
00:26:38One minute 35.09.
00:26:40Fastest lap in the race
00:26:41for Craig Lowndes.
00:26:43Winkup.
00:26:44His teammate's got
00:26:45a 2.3 second margin
00:26:46over the field
00:26:47at the moment.
00:26:48Pultard in third.
00:26:49Then Davison.
00:26:50He's got his arms
00:26:50full with Jonathan Webb
00:26:51right in behind here
00:26:52in the number 19 car.
00:26:54Then Tander.
00:26:55Wall is continuing
00:26:56this great run.
00:26:57Winterbottom eighth.
00:26:58Then Rick Kelly
00:26:59in the first of the Nissans.
00:27:01Followed by James Courtney
00:27:02now inside the top ten.
00:27:03He's the lone ranger
00:27:04there at the moment.
00:27:06You're going to see
00:27:07some pit stops
00:27:07very shortly.
00:27:09So they weren't permitted
00:27:11to stop Crier
00:27:12to lap ten
00:27:12and now the strategy
00:27:14games begin.
00:27:15Will they change
00:27:16two fronts
00:27:17two rears
00:27:17the left
00:27:18the right
00:27:19all four.
00:27:20Everybody up and down
00:27:21pit lane has their own
00:27:22version of how this
00:27:23should unfold.
00:27:24There you go.
00:27:25Pultard in.
00:27:27Davison in.
00:27:28Yeah and most of the
00:27:29teams out on pit lane
00:27:30here and I'm up at the
00:27:31sharp end
00:27:31the pointy end
00:27:32where the Red Bull cars
00:27:34have got two tyres out.
00:27:35Looks like they're going
00:27:36to put one on either side
00:27:37rear tyres
00:27:38and the advantage
00:27:39they have by being up
00:27:40at the pointy end
00:27:41of that lane
00:27:42which they earned
00:27:43from their championship
00:27:43position last year
00:27:44means they come in clean
00:27:45and they go out clean.
00:27:47Like I keep an eye on
00:27:48which tyres go where
00:27:49because some guys
00:27:50are going to put four on
00:27:52some are going to put two
00:27:53and it'll be very
00:27:54interesting to see
00:27:55what the leaders do
00:27:56in terms of strategy here.
00:27:58There'll certainly be
00:27:59some people depending
00:28:00on where you are
00:28:01in the championship
00:28:02and how your day's
00:28:03unfolding
00:28:03that play the four tyre
00:28:06game to try and get
00:28:07a little game in this race.
00:28:09That's tight.
00:28:10OK mate, obviously
00:28:13the soldier is
00:28:14your best
00:28:14out lab.
00:28:19Shane Van Gisburgh
00:28:20and meanwhile
00:28:21that engine's down
00:28:22a cylinder
00:28:23so it's straight
00:28:23into the pit for him
00:28:24so he's out
00:28:25of the race.
00:28:28Cool thought
00:28:28they made ground
00:28:29in that section
00:28:31there between
00:28:31Will Davison
00:28:33and Tander.
00:28:34Tander made a lot of
00:28:34ground on them
00:28:35on the way
00:28:35into the pit
00:28:36but they've made
00:28:37a lot of ground
00:28:37on the HRT guys
00:28:39in the pit stop
00:28:40itself.
00:28:41So remember
00:28:41that car number
00:28:43one, Jamie Winkup
00:28:45is the first guy
00:28:46in the queue
00:28:47that's stopped.
00:28:49His teammate
00:28:49Craig Lowndes
00:28:50is yet to stop.
00:28:51There's a whole raft.
00:28:52About half the field
00:28:52hasn't stopped
00:28:53at this stage
00:28:53and there's
00:28:54the 24-year-old
00:28:55Kiwi Shane Van
00:28:56Gisburgh
00:28:56and birthday
00:28:57last week
00:28:57for him
00:28:58and a problem
00:28:59in the engine
00:29:00bay of that car
00:29:03and so he's
00:29:03out of business
00:29:04for the time being.
00:29:04This is Todd Kelly
00:29:05Jack Daniels
00:29:06racing Nissan
00:29:07all four wheels
00:29:08off the deck.
00:29:09Look at the load.
00:29:10I mean everywhere
00:29:11you look in the car
00:29:11you see flex
00:29:12twisting loads.
00:29:15That's 1,400 kilos
00:29:16more than 3,000 pounds
00:29:18flying through the air
00:29:20and landing awkwardly.
00:29:25This is James Moffat.
00:29:27He's in a battle
00:29:28with Chas Mostert
00:29:29who made his V8
00:29:30supercar championship
00:29:32debut in Western Australia
00:29:33last time out.
00:29:34First visit to the US
00:29:35for him.
00:29:36Loving the adventure.
00:29:37Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:29:38Oh, this is costly.
00:29:40Okay, go.
00:29:40Should have gone then.
00:29:41Alex Davidson was inbound
00:29:44in the Gerald Wendt entry
00:29:45and so for Jonathan Webb
00:29:47he had to sit and wait.
00:29:48That's hurting
00:29:48so Mark Winterbottom
00:29:50has grabbed a position
00:29:50as a result of that
00:29:51in the Pepsi entry
00:29:52car number five
00:29:53and when you're the driver
00:29:54when you're sitting there
00:29:55being told to wait
00:29:56having already done
00:29:57a big long run
00:29:58at 40 kilometres an hour
00:29:59down the pit lane
00:30:00it feels like
00:30:01the whole world
00:30:02passes you by.
00:30:04Oh, got a hit.
00:30:06Winterbottom's
00:30:07giving him a bump.
00:30:08He got him.
00:30:09That was Garth Tander
00:30:10that he tagged.
00:30:13So all the way down
00:30:14to position eight
00:30:15at the moment
00:30:15Lowndes down to Scott Pye.
00:30:17They've not yet
00:30:17taken the opportunity
00:30:18to stop.
00:30:20They're playing
00:30:20a slightly different
00:30:21strategy game.
00:30:22Everybody from position
00:30:23nine through 28
00:30:24has stopped in this race.
00:30:26Now the interesting part
00:30:27of this
00:30:27with Lowndes being
00:30:28slightly out of
00:30:29kilter with wind cup
00:30:31Lowndes did his
00:30:32fastest lap
00:30:33two laps
00:30:33before they all
00:30:34came in.
00:30:35So their speed
00:30:36is very good
00:30:37so that may not
00:30:37the undercut
00:30:38may not work
00:30:39as well as normal.
00:30:41A nice turn
00:30:41in the right direction
00:30:42for Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:30:43His car
00:30:44they had a
00:30:45misfire problem
00:30:45they've been able
00:30:46to fix it.
00:30:47Shane Van Gisbergen
00:30:47will be back out there
00:30:48in a matter of seconds
00:30:49guys.
00:30:50It must have been
00:30:51a pretty simple thing.
00:30:53Plug lead or
00:30:53something like
00:30:54you don't normally
00:30:55lift the bonnet
00:30:56and resolve it
00:30:57and live to tell
00:30:59the tale.
00:31:01Alex Premis
00:31:02just entered
00:31:02pit lane.
00:31:05So Lowndes is out
00:31:06there.
00:31:06He's 8.3 seconds
00:31:07ahead of
00:31:08Rick Kelly.
00:31:10So he's pressing
00:31:11on and that's
00:31:11to Mark's point
00:31:12because he's still
00:31:13got pace.
00:31:14Meantime there's
00:31:15a whole bunch of
00:31:15others that have
00:31:16come into the pit
00:31:16lane now.
00:31:17James Courtney,
00:31:17David Reynolds,
00:31:18Alex Premis.
00:31:19This leaves
00:31:20Rick Kelly in
00:31:21position two.
00:31:22So it's
00:31:22Holden,
00:31:23Craig Lowndes
00:31:23one,
00:31:23Rick Kelly,
00:31:24Nissan two.
00:31:25Then it's
00:31:25Jason Bright,
00:31:26Team VOC3,
00:31:27mystified by
00:31:28their lack of
00:31:29pace.
00:31:29This is a car
00:31:30that's been
00:31:30right there on
00:31:31screen.
00:31:32The Team VOC
00:31:32entry very quick
00:31:33in the recent
00:31:34past and it
00:31:35just has had
00:31:36no pace
00:31:37since about
00:31:38halfway through
00:31:39yesterday.
00:31:40They can't
00:31:40figure out
00:31:40what the
00:31:41problem is
00:31:41so they've
00:31:41gone back
00:31:42to the
00:31:43setup that
00:31:43David Wall
00:31:44installed for
00:31:45this race
00:31:46in an effort
00:31:46to try and
00:31:47make that
00:31:47VOC car work.
00:31:48Here he is
00:31:49on screen now.
00:31:50So he's
00:31:50being chased by
00:31:51Michael Caruso.
00:31:52He's under
00:31:53investigation at
00:31:53the end of
00:31:54the race
00:31:54remember for
00:31:55the incident
00:31:55with Tim Slade
00:31:56a little bit
00:31:57early on.
00:31:58So Bright is
00:31:58third,
00:31:59Caruso fourth,
00:32:00then Scott
00:32:00Pye who you
00:32:02saw images of
00:32:03him at the
00:32:03top of the
00:32:03telecast flying
00:32:04through the air
00:32:05and meeting the
00:32:06wall in Tasmania
00:32:07and then flying
00:32:08through the air
00:32:08and not meeting
00:32:09a wall in
00:32:10Western Australia
00:32:10thankfully and
00:32:12looking for a
00:32:13nice clean
00:32:14calm weekend
00:32:14with some points.
00:32:15So now we've
00:32:16pretty well
00:32:17cleansed the
00:32:17pit lane
00:32:18Neil.
00:32:18The overwhelming
00:32:19strategy was
00:32:20just rear tyres
00:32:21only.
00:32:22We often see
00:32:23in that situation
00:32:23when they're
00:32:24trying to preserve
00:32:24tyres they'll
00:32:25put them down
00:32:26one side of
00:32:26the car.
00:32:27Of course here
00:32:27in Texas this
00:32:28circuit has a
00:32:30lot of lefts and
00:32:30rights so the
00:32:31smart play is
00:32:32rear tyres because
00:32:33they cop a lot
00:32:34more punishment
00:32:34than the front
00:32:35because you've
00:32:36got to put the
00:32:36horsepower
00:32:36through them
00:32:37and the same
00:32:38lateral load as
00:32:39the front tyre.
00:32:40I'll show you
00:32:40before the next
00:32:41race just how
00:32:42difficult it is to
00:32:43manage your tyre
00:32:44bank for this
00:32:45weekend.
00:32:46So still five
00:32:47cars yet to
00:32:48pit Marco
00:32:49with just under
00:32:5115 laps left
00:32:52to go in this
00:32:53first ever race
00:32:54on American
00:32:54Soul.
00:32:55Craig Lowndes
00:32:55leads the way.
00:33:00Well six months
00:33:01ago to the
00:33:01day Circuit of
00:33:02the Americas
00:33:03hosted its first
00:33:04ever Formula 1
00:33:05Grand Prix
00:33:05and now the
00:33:07Australian V8
00:33:07supercars are
00:33:08putting on a
00:33:09show here on a
00:33:10really hot day.
00:33:12There's been
00:33:12action all around
00:33:13us.
00:33:14Craig Lowndes
00:33:16leads on the
00:33:17road.
00:33:17He is yet to
00:33:18pit.
00:33:19In fact I can
00:33:19tell you he's
00:33:20just entering
00:33:20pit lane right
00:33:21now.
00:33:21This is the
00:33:22view looking
00:33:22back from
00:33:23Mark Winterbottom
00:33:24to Jonathan
00:33:25Webb.
00:33:25So at the
00:33:28moment with
00:33:29Lowndes peeling
00:33:29off from the
00:33:30lead in the
00:33:30Red Bull
00:33:31entry car
00:33:31triple eight
00:33:32that leaves
00:33:33Jason Bright
00:33:33Michael Caruso
00:33:34and Scott
00:33:35Pye out there
00:33:35yet to stop
00:33:36second third
00:33:36and fourth
00:33:37and look at
00:33:37Webb up the
00:33:38inside here.
00:33:38They'll run
00:33:39side to side
00:33:40Winterbottom in
00:33:41car number
00:33:42five.
00:33:42Webb on the
00:33:43outside and
00:33:44this is amazing
00:33:45to try and
00:33:46run two wide
00:33:47through 17 and
00:33:4818.
00:33:48He's dropped
00:33:48two spots in
00:33:49the process and
00:33:50that's a big
00:33:51birthday present
00:33:52for Rick Kelly.
00:33:54I'm going to
00:33:54confirm for you
00:33:55because we think
00:33:57that Rick Kelly
00:33:57may have put
00:33:58four tyres on
00:33:59when a lot of
00:33:59other guys have
00:34:00put two on.
00:34:00We'll just
00:34:00check that for
00:34:01you.
00:34:01Another bloke
00:34:05that has just
00:34:06pitted and put
00:34:06two tyres on
00:34:07was Craig
00:34:07Lowndes.
00:34:08Roland Dane
00:34:09team principal
00:34:10down here at
00:34:10Red Bull Racing.
00:34:11Roland,
00:34:11interesting strategy
00:34:12leaving Craig
00:34:13out that long.
00:34:14He had really
00:34:14good speed.
00:34:15If you looked
00:34:16at his lap
00:34:16times, he had
00:34:17great speed.
00:34:18So he just
00:34:18ran him a
00:34:19little bit longer
00:34:19to half the
00:34:21race basically.
00:34:22I'm not quite
00:34:23sure where he's
00:34:24come out but
00:34:24he'll be there
00:34:25or thereabouts.
00:34:26Great speed.
00:34:27Thanks for the
00:34:27heads up mate.
00:34:28It's all hands
00:34:29to the pump
00:34:29in Team BOC
00:34:30at the moment.
00:34:31Brad, you're
00:34:31trying to make
00:34:32a bit of headway
00:34:32with Bridie's
00:34:33car.
00:34:33How's it
00:34:34going?
00:34:34It's pretty
00:34:35tough going.
00:34:36He's struggling
00:34:36with his
00:34:36set up on the
00:34:37car.
00:34:37We've decided
00:34:38to run him
00:34:38long.
00:34:39We'll probably
00:34:39stop on the
00:34:39second or two
00:34:40or three laps
00:34:41to go and
00:34:43just put two
00:34:44tyres on it
00:34:44and really hope
00:34:45that he gets a
00:34:46good run through
00:34:46this clear air
00:34:47period and save
00:34:49it those two
00:34:50tyres.
00:34:51So tomorrow or
00:34:51later on today
00:34:52if we get the
00:34:53set up a little
00:34:53better we can
00:34:54put four tyres
00:34:55on him with a
00:34:55bit of advantage
00:34:56but we just
00:34:57sort of figure
00:34:57that this is a
00:34:58bit of a dead
00:34:58duck race for
00:34:59him so in clear
00:35:00air he's got
00:35:01good speed we'll
00:35:02just try and get
00:35:03the best we can
00:35:04and fight another
00:35:06day really.
00:35:07All the best
00:35:07with it mate Tom.
00:35:08Thanks very much.
00:35:08What's interesting
00:35:09here is the margin
00:35:10closed down by
00:35:11running Craig
00:35:11Lowndes long as
00:35:12Roland Dane just
00:35:13explained.
00:35:14Look at that air
00:35:14gap.
00:35:15It's completely
00:35:16disappeared so if
00:35:17you remember Jamie
00:35:18Winkup prior to the
00:35:19stop that he took
00:35:20and he was first in
00:35:21that queue had a
00:35:22really significant
00:35:23lead over Craig
00:35:24Lowndes.
00:35:24Now Lowndes looks
00:35:25good in this latter
00:35:26stage of the race
00:35:27so he's closed right
00:35:28up and continues to
00:35:29close up.
00:35:30So there's the
00:35:34news from his
00:35:34engineer Jeremy
00:35:35Moore telling him
00:35:36that the tyres are
00:35:37older on the cars
00:35:38in front and behind
00:35:38but there's only
00:35:39effectively one in
00:35:40front of him after
00:35:41everybody cleanses.
00:35:43I want you to
00:35:44watch this boys
00:35:44riding with Mark
00:35:46Winterbottom here
00:35:47looking out the
00:35:47rear and this will
00:35:48give you the sense
00:35:49of this hill climb
00:35:51up to turn one.
00:35:52That's a move by
00:35:55Jonathan Webb and
00:35:55a good one.
00:35:56gets the spot back
00:35:58that Rick Kelly
00:35:59and I think lost it
00:36:00again in this
00:36:01manoeuvre.
00:36:01Is he going to
00:36:02hang on here?
00:36:02This is the best
00:36:03seat in the house
00:36:03looking from the
00:36:04rear bumper and
00:36:05yeah Rick Kelly
00:36:06has managed to
00:36:07climb back round
00:36:08the outside at
00:36:08turn two.
00:36:10Webb went in too
00:36:10quick to turn one
00:36:11as the case may be.
00:36:13So there are three
00:36:14cars yet to stop.
00:36:15Jason Bright,
00:36:16Michael Caruso and
00:36:17Scott Pye.
00:36:19Jamie Winkup is
00:36:20fourth on the road
00:36:21at the moment for
00:36:21the first of those
00:36:22who completed their
00:36:23stops and he's
00:36:24being pressured by
00:36:25his team mate
00:36:26Craig Lowndes.
00:36:28There's the air
00:36:28gap.
00:36:31Gives you an
00:36:32understanding of
00:36:33just how busy
00:36:34this racetrack is
00:36:35when you consider
00:36:36that it's just a
00:36:36little under 3.7
00:36:38kilometres,
00:36:392.28 miles and
00:36:41there's 20 turns on
00:36:42this racetrack.
00:36:43It's busy and
00:36:44there's a lot more
00:36:44action to come.
00:36:51Well there's some
00:36:52drama unfolding here
00:36:53at the back end of
00:36:54this race.
00:36:55You're riding with
00:36:56Jamie Winkup who
00:36:57leads the race from
00:36:58Craig Lowndes.
00:36:58Lowndes has
00:36:59fresher tyres and
00:37:00a lot of pace.
00:37:01That's effectively
00:37:02one and two on
00:37:03the road.
00:37:04Three cars yet to
00:37:05pit.
00:37:05But in the break
00:37:06car 888 is now
00:37:08showing on the
00:37:09timing board for
00:37:10being under
00:37:10investigation for
00:37:11spinning wheels at
00:37:13the pit stop.
00:37:14The reason that's
00:37:14an issue, it's a
00:37:15safety issue.
00:37:16They don't want
00:37:17crew in or near the
00:37:19car when the rear
00:37:20wheels are rotating.
00:37:21So I'm sure that
00:37:22Roland Dane will
00:37:23argue the case.
00:37:24There he is, team
00:37:24principal for Red Bull
00:37:25Racing Australia.
00:37:27His daughter in the
00:37:27background.
00:37:28And this margin has
00:37:29closed right down
00:37:30Lounswick's racer at
00:37:31the moment.
00:37:32He's using a lot of
00:37:33racetrack.
00:37:33He's been using a bit
00:37:34more of it than Jamie
00:37:35Winkup.
00:37:35He's got more grip
00:37:36available to him.
00:37:37Five laps is a big
00:37:38deal.
00:37:38Running long has
00:37:39worked out very well.
00:37:41And there's Damien
00:37:42White in consultation
00:37:43with Adrian Burgess.
00:37:45So Damien's talking to
00:37:46race control.
00:37:47Not only is the
00:37:48starter but he's the
00:37:49general manager of
00:37:49motorsport for the
00:37:50category.
00:37:51And Adrian is the
00:37:52team manager for
00:37:53Red Bull Racing
00:37:53Australia.
00:37:54It's quite an
00:37:54extraordinary pairing
00:37:55this one.
00:37:56Jamie Winkup has won
00:37:5716 out of 24 races
00:37:59offshore since Bahrain
00:38:01in 2008.
00:38:02He's got a 70% strike
00:38:04rate when we leave the
00:38:05country.
00:38:06Craig Lowndes we know
00:38:07has won more races than
00:38:08anybody in the category
00:38:09now.
00:38:09In 91 he's only won
00:38:11one overseas.
00:38:12So that's Jeremy Moore
00:38:18on the radio in
00:38:19discussion with Craig
00:38:21Lowndes.
00:38:22And look at Lowndes
00:38:23he's going to have to
00:38:23be careful.
00:38:24A couple of things
00:38:25going on at the
00:38:25moment.
00:38:25When you're that
00:38:26close to the car in
00:38:27front you can't see
00:38:28the apexes and it's
00:38:29harder to pick up the
00:38:30braking cues.
00:38:31You're also making a
00:38:32lot of temperature.
00:38:33So great temps are
00:38:34going to soar.
00:38:34They already peak at
00:38:35850 degrees Celsius in
00:38:37these cars around here
00:38:38and you're going to
00:38:39make a lot of hot air
00:38:40for the air intake to
00:38:42the engine and that's
00:38:43going to hurt horsepower
00:38:44as well.
00:38:46This is the modified
00:38:47part of the circuit
00:38:48the national circuit
00:38:49the first time that
00:38:50we've seen it in use
00:38:51which cuts through
00:38:53turns 7, straight 8,
00:38:569, 10 and then
00:38:57rejoins at turn 11.
00:38:58Incidentally Shane
00:38:59Van Gisbergen has done
00:39:00the fastest lap of the
00:39:01race which automatically
00:39:02becomes a lap record.
00:39:04He's at a 1 minute
00:39:0534.5.
00:39:06He's in 26th.
00:39:07He had those engine
00:39:07problems we spoke about.
00:39:08We're on board now with
00:39:09Chas Mostard.
00:39:10Dick Johnson racing
00:39:12Wilson security entry.
00:39:14He's tucked in behind
00:39:14Frenchman Alex Kramer.
00:39:18And just for a little
00:39:18bit of clarity for those
00:39:19at home when we talk
00:39:20all about the spinning
00:39:21of the wheels with
00:39:22Lanza's car we mean
00:39:23when the car is in the
00:39:24air.
00:39:24When you put it on the
00:39:25deck you can spin them
00:39:26all you like provided
00:39:27you have your speed
00:39:28limiter on.
00:39:29That's no problem.
00:39:30Now those three guys
00:39:31that still haven't
00:39:32pitted side by side
00:39:33action there.
00:39:34The three guys
00:39:34haven't pitted now
00:39:35they're clearly you
00:39:36can't go this far
00:39:37into the race and
00:39:37think it's strategically
00:39:38a good option over
00:39:39the weekend it's
00:39:40strategically a good
00:39:41option.
00:39:41They're clearly saving
00:39:42tyres and that'll
00:39:43come back and help
00:39:44them later on in the
00:39:44weekend.
00:39:45Good point Larko.
00:39:46They've basically
00:39:47decided just to fight
00:39:49this one out and not
00:39:50use as many tyres as
00:39:52some of the other
00:39:53runners that were in
00:39:53contention.
00:39:54So Bright Caruso
00:39:55and Pi have decided
00:39:56to use their current
00:39:58tyres up for the
00:39:59maximum period in this
00:40:00race and then that
00:40:02will facilitate a
00:40:04better tyre bank for
00:40:05the remaining races
00:40:06over the weekend.
00:40:07As Moffat gets down
00:40:08the inside of Alex
00:40:09Prem a little bump.
00:40:11Just have a look here
00:40:11now.
00:40:13This is the engine
00:40:14power.
00:40:15Real comparison
00:40:16you've got with the
00:40:18Walkinshaw prepared
00:40:19engines in the Gary
00:40:20Rogers Mobile versus
00:40:21the Nissan and they
00:40:22were absolutely the
00:40:23same all the way up
00:40:24the hill.
00:40:25So although the
00:40:26Nissan may not be
00:40:28totally developed at
00:40:29this point as the
00:40:30first year of their
00:40:32reintroduction into
00:40:33our sport.
00:40:34They're certainly
00:40:35going to reintroduction
00:40:36there in turn two
00:40:37and it's wild.
00:40:38180 kilometres an
00:40:39hour and Prem a
00:40:41stays in front of
00:40:42Moffat.
00:40:42This is a healthy
00:40:43battle.
00:40:44They get to 210
00:40:45kilometres an hour
00:40:46as they make that
00:40:47approach in fifth
00:40:47gear on the run to
00:40:48turn three and then
00:40:49the intensity of
00:40:51these S's continues
00:40:52to build.
00:40:53They keep down
00:40:54shifting and the
00:40:54turns get tighter
00:40:55until they finally
00:40:56rejoin the Grand
00:40:57Prix circuit proper
00:40:58down there.
00:40:59That's where they
00:40:59are again now.
00:41:01Tony Delberto's not
00:41:01out of this little
00:41:02battle either.
00:41:03He's hooked on to
00:41:03the back of them
00:41:04there in car number
00:41:04three in the
00:41:05high flex entry.
00:41:07So Bright, Caruso
00:41:08and Pi, one, two,
00:41:10three.
00:41:12Just checking out
00:41:13the times there to
00:41:14see how far they've
00:41:15drifted away time-wise.
00:41:16So Jason Bright's
00:41:17just done a 135, three,
00:41:19two, pretty much
00:41:20similar for Caruso
00:41:21and Pi.
00:41:22Jamie Wincup a
00:41:23134.6 and exactly
00:41:26the same for Craig
00:41:27Lowndes.
00:41:28That's the difference
00:41:28in time-life at this
00:41:30stage.
00:41:30There's not many
00:41:32laps to go.
00:41:32Another investigation
00:41:33after the race for
00:41:34Car 12, Chas
00:41:36Mosden, Car 34, Alex
00:41:37Bremer for an
00:41:38incident at Turn 12.
00:41:40So they'll have to
00:41:41cancel the dinner
00:41:42reservations tonight
00:41:43for those working in
00:41:44the stewards area
00:41:45because they're going
00:41:46to be shuffling
00:41:47paperwork until
00:41:48midnight on this
00:41:49one.
00:41:50Just on that for
00:41:51our Australian
00:41:52viewers coming up
00:41:53in between the
00:41:53races.
00:41:54We're going to
00:41:54show you some
00:41:54great stories.
00:41:55We sent the boys
00:41:56out throughout the
00:41:57week.
00:41:58Salt Lake
00:41:58Barbecue.
00:41:59Will Davison
00:42:00took some mates
00:42:01down there,
00:42:01his brother
00:42:02included.
00:42:03Also going to
00:42:03have a lot of
00:42:04fun with Craig
00:42:04Lowndes and
00:42:05Davey Reynolds.
00:42:06So don't miss
00:42:07it.
00:42:08On board now
00:42:09with James
00:42:09Courtney.
00:42:11And you can
00:42:11see the level
00:42:12of workload
00:42:12and the braking
00:42:13forces and
00:42:14footwork associated
00:42:16with driving one
00:42:17of these cars.
00:42:18Now these are
00:42:18what they call
00:42:19flat changes.
00:42:19That's using the
00:42:20clutch on the
00:42:21down change.
00:42:22But watch when
00:42:23the flat change
00:42:24happens now.
00:42:24The gear change
00:42:25happens without
00:42:26using the clutch.
00:42:27He's a right
00:42:29foot breaker.
00:42:29So a traditional
00:42:30driving technique.
00:42:32Some of the
00:42:33guys in the
00:42:33field use their
00:42:34left foot.
00:42:34Fabian
00:42:34Coulthard,
00:42:35Alex
00:42:35Premra,
00:42:36two of the
00:42:36left foot
00:42:38users.
00:42:41And you can
00:42:42just watch now
00:42:43as the rear
00:42:43tyres continue
00:42:46to be punished
00:42:46around this
00:42:483.68 circuit.
00:42:51You can see
00:42:51the modulation
00:42:52with the throttle
00:42:53there through
00:42:53turn.
00:42:5416, 17,
00:42:5418, now
00:42:56down to 19,
00:42:56the second
00:42:57last corner.
00:42:57Watch the
00:42:58throttle.
00:42:59Very nice,
00:43:00slow modulation.
00:43:03Little bump.
00:43:05We're going to
00:43:05go on board
00:43:06now with
00:43:07James Courtney.
00:43:09Let's have
00:43:09a look at
00:43:09this.
00:43:11Wind the volume
00:43:11up.
00:43:12This is a
00:43:12lap of the

00:44:24how was the oversteer down the last part of that shot sliding the car through 17 and 18
00:44:34that was 95 seconds of being on board one of these cars it's so physical it's such a busy
00:44:40racetrack and now we go slightly further forward in the field by five positions to the battle
00:44:47with mark winterbottom down the inside now with tander we saw them make contact earlier and a
00:44:52big lock up for winterbottom runs wide that was a mistake and he's lost two positions he may lose
00:44:58a third this is rick kelly around the outside he gets it done three spots
00:45:04so he was aggressive he was trying to get down the inside of garth tander
00:45:10for eighth position he's now back in 11th after that mistake that that tire will also be damaged
00:45:17good awareness too from garth tander to make sure that he didn't go spearing into
00:45:24mark winterbottom there at the top of the hill there's more investigations being posted up on
00:45:30our computer timing here car three tony delberto and car 34 alex prema are also going to be looked
00:45:36out for trouble at turn 15 that's frank adams and we can't quite see him at the moment from v8
00:45:40supercar in discussion with adrian burgess and this will be about the wheel spinning issue no doubt
00:45:46that's vincent damasky on the right hand side so he's a special projects manager so
00:45:51we've got we've got all the the heavyweights involved in this one there'll be some blowing
00:45:56about this afterwards i love this sort of stuff because the team have never they do nothing
00:46:00nothing wrong with the team that's exactly how it is and you know that the team will always try
00:46:05to preserve you know their rights under the regulation and if you can lip read you can pretty
00:46:10much decode what was going on there so here's mark winterbottom up the inside of garth tander
00:46:14turn one doesn't work he's trying to use the gearbox to stop it can't get it done blue smoke
00:46:19locks the inside front runs wide and got punished for that maneuver to the extent that he lost three
00:46:25positions to tander to webb and to rick kelly there goes rico in the jack daniels entry
00:46:30at turn two here it is again from outside and that will have put a significant mark on the front
00:46:34left tire of that car and it happens as he puts left lock on the car and unweights the inside front
00:46:40here's tander and jonathan webb they continue their battle for eighth and ninth larko yeah nearly other
00:46:47fpr car having a bit of a battle with will davidson and now it's about 35 degrees out here at the
00:46:51moment his drink bottle has stopped working and they have a little fluid container in there not like a
00:46:56little wiper motor that squirts on your windscreen to feed the drink into their mouth
00:46:59and as you would understand i mean if someone said you you haven't got a drink you deal with it but
00:47:03if you've got one giveth and taketh away well that's tough and remember these cars are roaring
00:47:09hot inside in celsius terms at least 20 to 25 degrees above ambient what is that in fahrenheit
00:47:15oh matthew's got the big long chart here 75 and uh so that's that's on top of whatever the ambient
00:47:21temperature of the day is so you roll the numbers matty well if it's 60 degrees celsius in the car which it
00:47:27can get up to is 140 fahrenheit so now bright and caruso are in scott pie also joins them so that's
00:47:35it for the remaining three to serve their compulsory pit stop which reveals jamie winkup and craig lownds
00:47:40in the lead of the race and lownds has actually just drifted off a little bit now and that margin's
00:47:45opened up he'll be starting to hurt those tires a bit more now and he'll need the cool air in the front
00:47:50of the car this is bright
00:47:58real davison meantime talking about a lot of rear brake locking with a lot of brake fade the fronts
00:48:06are getting very hot in car number six the pepsi entry
00:48:08i don't know whether they fixed lee holdsworth's problem but that was a power steer issue
00:48:18it'd be pretty hard work around here without power of steer it'd be almost impossible
00:48:22power steering dramas would be a huge huge problem for the drivers considering the camber and caster
00:48:27and the geometry of the front suspension on these cars i mean even just not being able to drink the
00:48:31cars were all sealed up for maximum aerodynamic efficiency the drivers have all got cooling kits
00:48:39so sometimes you've just also got to get some water in there because there are extreme temperatures
00:48:43inside this little battle here looks exciting this is scott pie 15th james moffett alex prement tony
00:48:49delberto and clinging to the back of that pack is tim blanchard car number 17 for dick johnson racing
00:48:55and they're you know an arm wrestle to the death here at the moment
00:49:00well yeah mid pack basically oh and moffett remember he took a great penalty into this race
00:49:06because he got involved in practice one in a stout with jonathan webb
00:49:11ultimately webb at the same time popped an oil line while all that was going on so it made it
00:49:15pretty spectacular and james has been to america once before james moffett but it was when he was
00:49:21very very young so he's doing the whole tourist thing he's off to the coke 600 get some nascar
00:49:26action on the memorial day weekend lots of drivers are off to the indy 500 jamie wincup's off to las
00:49:32vegas after all this and in the not too distant future on our coverage we'll get a special a special
00:49:38message from marcus ambrose up at the charlotte all-star weekend for the nascar but here we go again
00:49:45jamie wincup on the final lap will lead home his teammate for a red bull racing australian one two
00:49:52to open the account and if he does it it's win number four in this championship season and after
00:49:58a slow start initially very very consistent he was banking points but he wasn't winning races
00:50:03wincup's beginning to assert himself remarkable that he's been able to just cruise along like he
00:50:10has and learn how was that did you see lounge he was totally out of control he was he was out
00:50:17sideways i thought he was gone he rotated at that corner earlier in the week man the last five years
00:50:24this man has won 16 out of the 24 races that have been held outside of australia he comes here to this
00:50:32brand new multi-million dollar circuit and he rolls out the same trick jv wincup the defending series
00:50:38champion will claim the first ever victory in australian v8 supercar at the circuit of the
00:50:45americas and that's one for the books as well good start fellas good start one two keep it up long weekend
00:50:57craig lounge second fabian coulthard on the podium after starting from pole position will davison the
00:51:04leading forward in fourth a good bounce back after a bad weekend at wa for guard tender at toll hrt
00:51:13and rick kelly has just posted folks the best performance by a nissan in 2013
00:51:21in the country where the altimer was born and built
00:51:25but wincup's got a habit of this he came into this weekend admitting that he was still kind of in holiday
00:51:30mode and wasn't very prepared wasn't being as meticulous as we've seen him he was waiting i guess
00:51:36for the track to come to him he knew that this team would give him a good car he's got ultimate faith
00:51:43in his engineer mark dutton and as the days went on well jamie wincup became comfortable and when he's
00:51:51comfortable in the race car race wins come and they're starting to come the championship is starting to get
00:51:57firmer and firmer after 13 races so that's your podium paul holdens jonathan webb top 10 performance
00:52:06he will start from inside the top 10 in our next race and james courtney there in ninth so he's moved
00:52:13up from 13th chas moston on debu in the states in 13th and we'll flick the page to find the leading
00:52:21erebus motorsport mercedes-benz of tim slade so it's fair to say that they're provisional for most of
00:52:29that field we know the winners in no doubt but there are that many investigations underway your honor
00:52:34we might have to go up to the capitol yeah there's a huge amount of trouble right from the very beginning
00:52:41and the best part of a dozen incidents that will be under post-race review so that is career win
00:52:50number 68 for jamie wincup incredible numbers he gets maximum points in this one continues a roll
00:53:01remember we've got more v8 supercar action to come later in the afternoon as well
00:53:12where this man is going to start from a handsome position he will start from the pole
00:53:17it's not a bad thing to do to come off position two for this race convert that to a win
00:53:22get yourself sorted have a breather start from pole for the next one well done jamie wincup
00:53:26and hold off a fast-flying teammate with fresher tires as well at the back end of the race
00:53:39clavian cool tart goes across to congratulate jamie who's now got four race wins for the season
00:53:48man that'd be hot work he's knocked around without the drink bottle he's really knocked about
00:53:56well jamie wincup the fly away king 25 races off soil in v8 supercars you won 17 of them
00:54:06congratulations another great win thanks barrett uh hey early early days in the weekend but um
00:54:11promising to have two quick cars so um yeah to start we want to we want to finish it off so we'll
00:54:16just keep the focus nice little personal milestone though to win this first one in austin oh absolutely
00:54:21yeah no it was um i was trying to keep it under rush but that last lap there's so many people
00:54:26here you know it's good crowd mix of aussies and um and you know countrymen so um yeah no
00:54:32fantastic couldn't be happier and of course jamie this time of the year we start to get our focus on
00:54:35the championship a little bit this helps uh it certainly helps yeah this is a obviously a full
00:54:40blown championship round so um every point helps definitely well done jamie enjoy the podium
00:54:44congratulations cheers cheers well craig lounge a tremendous performance as well and uh
00:54:50lounsey we thought there at one stage you might have caught your teammate yeah brett's i think that uh
00:54:54you know staying out longer and only putting fresh rears on it just imbalanced the car i had
00:54:57a heap of undersea um couldn't tune it with the eight the roll bars but look that's them the brakes
00:55:02jamie and the boys did a fantastic job with those guys so uh not too disappointed obviously being on
00:55:06the podium you had to work your way through you had a great duel with fabian early on yeah look we had
00:55:11a great battle i didn't uh didn't know what pace of race was going to be run i don't think anyone
00:55:14did but of course now we know fabian sort of faded a little bit there towards the end of that uh run
00:55:19before the for that uh pit stop so we had to push on hard jamie was getting away but uh look yeah
00:55:24them's the race we'll fight it now for the next one so i just got to say hello to levi and chili out
00:55:27there and lounsey just before we leave you a little bit of controversy about the potential
00:55:31of your wheels spinning during your pit stop can you give us your view oh i didn't know that so uh
00:55:36i'll have to have a look at the replay i'm sure the stewards would have seen that that's for sure
00:55:39all right mate good luck enjoy it thank you and of course fabian coultar a great performance
00:55:44fabian congratulations from pole position staying on the podium finishing third awesome yeah look it's not
00:55:48bad obviously we'd always like to win the race but we suffered you know shocking uh rear grip at the
00:55:53first part of the race but you know these two boys with a class act you know they had fast cars they
00:55:58drove a faultless race so i'm happy to come third you had a great duel with both of them yeah look
00:56:02you know it's always clean and fair up the front so uh makes life racing and uh pretty enjoyable so
00:56:07it's uh we'll be back you know another race this afternoon so he'll be all good go on your favor
00:56:10enjoy this podium thank you okay well i've just seen will davo uh struggle out of your car mate i hate
00:56:15disturbing at a time like this mate you had the wobbly boot on there um to have your drink bottle
00:56:19go in a race like that position for mate really good effort yeah it was hard work um yeah i mean
00:56:25the drink bottle went i knew that about lap two and then the cool suit i don't think was working
00:56:29there's no way i've done enough v8 races in high temperatures to get through much longer races
00:56:34than that comfortably so uh yeah it was hard work it's hard on any clips or anything so obviously the
00:56:39dry ice has failed and the drink so and i guess well just for people at home to understand why that
00:56:44would be difficult apart from the obvious thing the ambient is this is a really busy circuit out
