00:05success is about team effort and the same is true for your hair great clips it's going to be great
00:09we're also brought to you by rafell lumber and building supplies serving contractors
00:13homeowners in the community in marin for over 50 years visit their showroom today and you're
00:17listening to 95 7 the game kgmz fm and hd1 san francisco on odyssey sports station always live
00:24on the free odyssey app and now coming to you live from the laughing monk studios here's coach
00:29hi coach how you doing great how are you guys we're doing great man i would love to hear you
00:35in your words describe the emotions that you have felt over the last 24 hours to arrive in minnesota
00:44win in minnesota but also view and experience what happened to steph curry yeah i mean it's uh it's
00:53been quite a few days for sure you know winning that game seven in houston and then um you know
00:58going ahead and taking care of game one last night and uh and then of course you know the just
01:05seeing steph go down and especially with the hamstring i mean it's one thing if it's a rolled
01:10ankle but the hamstrings are always so tricky and um so it's been a roller coaster for sure but um
01:18you know we can't we can't do anything but prepare for tomorrow and uh the rest of the series and
01:25and try to try to go get a win and and uh give steph time to heal and come back so that's the focus
01:32what were the emotions like especially at halftime getting in the locker room where it was pretty
01:37clear at that point already that steph was going to be out not only for the second half but for some
01:42time yeah i mean i just felt terrible for him i went in at halftime he already had some ice on his
01:48hamstring and he was sitting on the floor in the locker room in the middle of you know the whole team and
01:53i just i didn't say much of anything i just went and gave him a hug and and uh i i just i don't know
01:59it's just so devastating to uh to see someone who who cares so much and who puts so much into it uh
02:07you know to just to see him go down and to know how disappointed he was uh it's tough but again
02:16you know injuries are part of things in in this in this business and um you have to respond you have to
02:22move forward steve it's been reported that that you know there's so much emotion uh with something
02:28like this that that he was in tears and you just shared that there really weren't a lot of words
02:33that the two of you said but but when you see that i i wonder what goes through your mind because i
02:39think a fan when they hear that steph was in tears they're thinking to themselves oh my gosh like he
02:44must be processing that he thinks maybe this is over for for the season like when you see that
02:50what what goes through your mind well i think that's really presumptuous to for anybody to
02:57just think that i just think it uh it's a hamstring hamstrings are tricky um there's you know we as we
03:05announced today it's going to be at least a week and uh you know that's uh you know almost almost the
03:12rest of the series so yeah we just have to to move forward and and there's not a whole lot we
03:18can do um nor steph um all he can do is is rest rehab and and our job is to to keep the the series
03:27moving forward and go out tomorrow and try to find a way to win and and then move on to game three and
03:33take it from there so there's not not much else to say well last night you had to go forward and go
03:38about winning that basketball game i know you were up when you got hurt and you extended the lead what
03:43was so impressive to you about the effort and the individuality of the players who were able to shake
03:49off that massive adversity and still go out and handle business on the road well holding a team
03:55like that to 89 uh on their home floor that's incredible defense and um as you guys know we're the
04:01number one defense in the league since the jimmy trade uh what we did in houston in game seven
04:07holding them under 90 uh this is not an accident you know draymond is the best defender i've ever
04:13seen in my life and he's playing at such a high level at that end of the floor and then of course
04:20jimmy is jimmy i mean he's one of the best players in the league he controls games i thought he controlled
04:24the whole fourth quarter you know he knew exactly what what he was doing we didn't really need to score
04:30we needed to take care of the ball and we needed to defend and those two guys held down the fort
04:36you know under a lot of pressure on the road against a desperate team uh that was really
04:42impressive they never got it under nine you know uh going into the fours i think it was 20
04:46you knew they'd make a run and they never got it below nine so that's a hell of a job to
04:51to finish the game and no question draymond and jimmy are the anchors you know now with steph out
04:57and buddy he'll hit some big shots you know gary payton made some big plays so
05:03just a great effort to to close that game out coach you've got some great veteran leaders
05:08obviously but i wonder when you detail that emotional roller coaster of game seven and travel
05:14and then turn around and new city and then steph injured do you do anything different as a coach
05:21with the way you're addressing your team because of that roller coaster
05:25not really you know you just um look at everything from a very realistic perspective
05:32you know we met as a staff today we give the players a day off they really needed it
05:36uh but we met as a staff we talked about messaging and you know how we approach tomorrow and uh you
05:43know what we're going to try to accomplish and and uh so tomorrow morning at shoot run we'll we'll
05:49have those discussions and lay out our game plan and go from there and how much does the game plan
05:54change i know that there's obviously going to be different wrinkles and different offensive sets
05:58without steph curry out there and different rotations but as a coaching staff when you approach
06:03game two is it dramatically different or is it just kind of subtle changes to what you're already doing
06:09well that's still to be determined you know we we have to uh to think about lineup combinations
06:16substitution patterns um we have to think about the actions that we're running you know without
06:22stuff how do we free ourselves up against a really tough defense um those are all things that we
06:28talked about at our staff meeting today and they're all things that i'm not going to tell you
06:33right now on this show that hurts a little steve i'll be honest i thought we'd uh you know
06:37gotten to a spot where maybe you would reveal things like game plans and rotations
06:41oh this has nothing to do with relationships i love you guys i just don't feel like revealing
06:46any information that might help minnesota so i know you understand that that i do yeah
06:50playoff jimmy right right steve come on he can go for 50 uh the next four uh games in a row
06:56well i i will say it's uh what a what a luxury to have a guy who has uh performed the way he has
07:06in the playoffs over the years and uh you know the the way he carried his heat teams to the finals
07:12you know twice uh he's uh he's an incredible player and leader and uh so it's a huge luxury to have
07:20him for sure i will ask you this steve because you are obviously less dynamic offensively and
07:26because as you've even detailed you guys are a phenomenal defensive team and that doesn't really
07:30change is there like a difference in approach to style of game like are you looking to play a more
07:38defensive lower scoring game now no we're just trying to defend the the best way we can i mean we
07:47know we have to rely on our defense and we don't have still stuff to to bail us out so uh you know
07:53absolutely the game uh begins and ends with our defense um but i i don't think that's uh necessarily
08:03changing our philosophy i mean that's uh that's what's gotten us this far and without stuff uh if
08:09we don't defend we're in big trouble so that's the focus always seems like game one of any series is a
08:15feeling out sort of a game and you played 12 guys last night was that a byproduct of the steph injury
08:21or is that something that you were looking to explore to see who might work in this matchup overall
08:27i would say it was more of the uh the injury you know what as soon as steph went down it changed
08:33everything i mean we knew coming into the game that we were going to play a lot of people based on
08:37you know game seven in houston and just the the nature of that houston series the physicality and
08:44playing every other day all that stuff um but once steph went down that um that necessitated
08:53a couple more substitutions and and getting more people involved and so you you know you have to
08:59adapt as you go uh steve co with us weathered and dibs 95 7 the game coach i i just wonder when when
09:06you're looking at this stuff when you go into the playoffs how much stuff like this even crosses your
09:11mind or maybe you don't have the luxury to even think about it but but when a team goes into a
09:16physical series and they do end up in a game seven and you've talked about how this is an aging dynasty
09:22is is that on your mind as a concern with night after night these games the travel the fact the 42
09:31minute you know box scores is that on your mind that that maybe that's more than those you know 35 37
09:38year old bodies can handle of course it is of course it is that's something we consider but
09:44you know you you get into these situations where uh you know you're you're in a series you you know
09:52if you want to advance if you want to survive and advance then uh you know what are you going to do
09:58play steph 32 minutes and lose a game you know if you you you really you got to do what you got to do
10:02to advance um but you're well aware that uh you know the heavy minutes can take a toll and and i
10:08don't think there's any question that you know going seven against houston that the nature of that
10:13series the physicality the heavy minutes for steph um yeah that's um you know it took a toll but um
10:21you know the alternative is uh you know you you play them way less and you lose the series against
10:27houston and everybody says the hell are you doing not playing stuff yeah i mean it's it's not it's
10:34not really like a dilemma at all it's just reality and one thing you can do as a coach is to you know
10:40break up the action and use your timeouts and i'm curious steve you had to burn one early last night
10:45a minute into the game because apparently somebody had the wrong clothing on is that a first for you
10:50a timeout for a wardrobe issue i've seen guys try to check into the game uh over my career where they
10:59had the wrong jersey on or they had a t-shirt on instead of their jersey i've seen that a couple
11:05times i've never seen a guy actually play in a game with her with the wrong shorts on uh so that was
11:13um that was rather amusing i must say steve steve can you even give us an idea of how something like
11:20that happens like why would there be like a similar pair of shorts in his locker other than
11:25the the actual uniform well i know we we have like practice shorts you know guys go out and shoot
11:33pre-game and something other than their game shorts so we got more equipment than anybody knows what to
11:39do with uh with the warriors so um he must have just forgotten to take the practice shorts off and put
11:46the game short cut yeah and i know you have a replay coach in the second row you got coaches for
11:51everything are you going to add a wardrobe coach now to the staff we are we are yeah we're we are
11:56currently uh recruiting from uh the new york uh fashion institute and looking for a consultant uh for
12:05uniform decision i love it coach kerr's got material this is great when you first said that you made me
12:11believe it like like you said that firmly coach oh my goodness i mean i was i was dying laughing as
12:19it happened last time i mean it's the first minute of the series and uh it was uh i just found it
12:25hilarious i i love buddy he's one of one of the best human beings i've ever met in my life and
12:30it was kind of fitting it's his approach to life it's that island mentality from the bahamas like
12:36you know there's not a whole lot of uh a lot of care into anything it's just enjoy life and and you
12:42know go out and uh be buddy healed it's awesome well dying laughing is exactly what a lot of people
12:49were doing with this post-game performance that he and jimmy have put on can you take our audience
12:55through how that relationship developed and developed so quickly not really i don't know much more than
13:04than you guys do and it's just uh you know all of a sudden they started ripping each other in the
13:09media and uh they're clearly doing it um good naturedly and they're both taking a lot of joy out
13:16of ribbing each other and uh i'm just like you i'm just sitting back and enjoying the show and does
13:22that make the locker room culture and the flights and all the rest of it feel much more like a family
13:28when you have you know buddies new this year and jimmy's new mid-year and yet these guys are
13:32getting on so so swimmingly does that help the overall vibe of the team too oh yeah i just think
13:39humor is is um is such an important dynamic um in in in anybody's life you know it's uh but in in the
13:49nba with all the pressure and all that stuff i think humor is um the great elixir for for the stress
13:56and uh so those guys both bring plenty of that so steve 28 and a half points a game for buddy over
14:01these last two you you're going to need some points from him now how sustainable is this effort
14:06well you know they're going to put their best defender on him now that steps out and and so
14:12maybe it's mcdaniels um you know we'll see but they're going to try to you know keep buddy down
14:18and we're going to have to try to find ways to to free him up um the number one way to do that is to
14:23get stops and you get out and transition and and uh so this game is going to come down to our our
14:29defense we we have to uh defend at a high level and uh create transition opportunities and and if
14:37we don't do that it's going to be really tough on the half court without steps so defense uh number
14:43one priority coach just listening to you talk about buddy i'm reminded of of when jimmy butler was
14:49was acquired and you you had told us like you you had never really spent much time with him before
14:53what what about buddy healed did did you know him before he came to the warriors and know this
14:59personality no i didn't know him at all but uh luke walton coached him in sacramento and and um
15:06luke luke told me years ago that buddy was one of his favorite guys chris uh demarco our assistant
15:13coach uh has coached the bahamian national team over the years and uh so he knew buddy really well
15:20so the second we signed him chris texted me he said you're gonna love buddy amazing guy full of joy
15:27full of life and and uh and obviously you know one of the best shooters in the league too so
15:32buddy's just been amazing and i look forward to seeing that guy every day he's just uh he's just a
15:38a joy to be around i love the stories of these connections that uh percolate up and it's luke walton
15:44and it's coach demarco and it's buddy in the bahamas but what's the story with pat spencer
15:49who found him where did this guy come from i know he's a lacrosse player by way of a
15:54d1 basketball player as well but all of a sudden now it's let pat cook who found him steve
16:01i love it he's great isn't he i mean the guy's just such a competitor uh obviously a great athlete
16:07i mean literally one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time at the college level and then
16:12he goes to northwestern for one season of basketball and uh and then makes the nba so
16:18the story is amazing i mean the competitive nature the work ethic uh the fearlessness and it's showing
16:25every time we put him into a game uh he's he's just you know playing uh with his hair on fire and
16:31making an impact uh i don't know for sure how we found him i do know that kent lake has been a big part
16:37of this over the years um finding these diamonds in the rough guys like juan tiscano anderson and
16:43damian lee and some of the guys who we've you know kind of uh filtered through santa cruz uh kent's got
16:49a really good eye uh for these type guys who can come in and and make an impact and um pat um
16:57has definitely done exactly that coach pretty exciting three days outside of the steph injury
17:03but i do want to ask you about a player or two who right now look like they're scuffling a little
17:08bit what what do you see with moses moody and and what is your plan for him going forward
17:13i think moses will bounce back it's just been you know two games where he played 11 minutes and nine
17:19minutes the last you know game seven and game one so he you know part of that is he plays the same
17:25position as buddy uh buddy's been rolling we've we've ridden uh with with buddy for good reason
17:31he's been on fire so the minutes haven't been there for moses and i think uh you know the
17:36houston series was uh an interesting one for him you know it's first time anybody's ever put a center
17:41on houston put shed boone on him and uh it changed the pictures quite a bit it took away a lot of his
17:49uh his openings um changed our our offensive structure because normally we have dream on in the pick and
17:56roll with the the center on him and uh you know they put their their center on moses and that puts
18:03him in the pick and roll it's a different look for him in a different vibe so this is you know this is
18:08part of the playoffs and this is where the teams really expose everything that you do you know and
18:14and uh and so when there's a disruption in the patterns and the way the game is played
18:21uh it can affect everybody i've been there as a player it's a tough spot to be in where you just
18:27you know you feel a little bit negated you're not you know you're not playing as well as you want for
18:32a couple games but this is what it's all about if you go the whole way it's two months of this it's
18:37incredibly stressful and so part of this for young players part of this experience is dealing with a
18:44couple of bad games and then being able to respond and i have no doubt um moses will respond
18:50he's uh such a high character guy he plays so hard uh cares so much uh and so i think uh you know
18:58going into game game two i think uh moses just needs to rely on you know what's made him such a
19:05good player for us as a starter you know these last few months and some of that is the uh intangibility
19:10of what he brings and i'm thinking about pods in that very vein where he's not shooting it well but
19:15he still was able to get eight rebounds how do you unlock brandon's offensive game especially now
19:21that steph's going to be out well similar to moses a young player who's going through it you know for
19:27the first or second time you know going through the postseason and feeling they the different
19:32ways people are guarding them focusing on them you know as soon as steph went out last night they
19:37put mcdaniels on on on on brandon to put pressure on him as a ball handler and that changed things for
19:43him and so um it's a great learning experience for him and and for moses and for all of our young
19:49guys and it's a matter of uh as coaches helping them adapt and adjust and helping them uh you know
19:57get back to a a a comfort zone and i'm confident that that they'll get there steve interesting to
20:03hear finch go after the refs today i saw your response as well i guess i would just ask you you're
20:10only one game in but but do you see this series as being as physical as as the last one is and and
20:18and sort of you know what what what's your hope for for how uh you know the the officials handle
20:24that this time around well every game is physical uh around the league it's uh you know the way the
20:31playoffs are played um it's just uh you know both teams are going to foul all the time and that's what i
20:38see i mean i the first 10 plays of the game last night i thought steph got bear hugged on the eight
20:43of them and um so i got my own complaints you know and and that's uh the same way in the houston
20:48series and and uh chris is justifiably going to look at the film and see plays where they got
20:54fouled and every coach in the league you know kenny atkinson right now i mean i've seen kenny's
20:58comments the last couple games you know he's he's upset with the physicality and uh you know i i just
21:05think welcome to the playoff this is this is what it's about and uh the coaches have to say what
21:10they have to say send in the clips talk to the league whatever it is but in the end um the refs
21:18are going to determine you know how they how they want to call it what they're going to call and it's
21:22up to the players and and the teams to to adapt and adjust all right coach well i didn't know this
21:28rule in the second round but apparently the home team loses every game so congrats on your win
21:33tomorrow night we'll take it let's go let's go yeah yeah can you believe this coach i know it's
21:40crazy it really is so i didn't see this coming um yeah i boston's up right now as you may well know
21:47but uh but long long way to go uh coach thank you very much uh good to chat with you good luck
21:53tomorrow night all right thanks guys take care all right there he is that whoops wrong button that
21:58is that's coach kerr presented by great clips in sports success is about team efforts same is true
