00:00Now comes back right, moving slowly, over the shoulder to Draymond.
00:03He'll take a three, it's up and good!
00:06Draymond Green from downtown.
00:08The Warriors on a run.
00:09They lead 30-20 right now.
00:12Golden State has scored the last 10.
00:16And now all eyes on number 30 as he tries to walk off something.
00:21He's going to walk over to the tunnel.
00:24And Curry is going to leave the floor and go right to the locker room.
00:28Now back to Willard and Dibbs.
00:30Take it away, Mark.
00:32All right, Steph.
00:34From what we're told, Steph was in tears in the locker room last night.
00:42I can only imagine.
00:44And I don't know where this is going to go next.
00:46And the Warriors won the game.
00:48But if you do really, like, take a moment as we sit here.
00:52And I'm not telling anybody to not be excited about the win.
00:55Or be optimistic or any of those things.
00:58You, like, I mean, you're up.
01:00You're up 1-0, Warriors.
01:01This is a phenomenal performance.
01:04But see this through the eyes of Steph Curry.
01:07With everything that has taken place since the last championship.
01:11All of the talk about winning a fifth ring.
01:15All of the talk about how he's too old and he's done.
01:19And then there is the loss against the Lakers.
01:22And there's the embarrassment in the play-in tournament.
01:24And there's the departure of Klay Thompson.
01:26And now the acquisition of Jimmy Butler.
01:29And Draymond Green and Steph talking to each other at the trade deadline.
01:32And going, wow, like, they did this for us.
01:35Like, we have to go turn that into a thing.
01:39And then they do.
01:40And they get into the playoffs.
01:41And then they win a series.
01:43And they win a series with a road game seven.
01:44And they do all of this.
01:46And let's be honest here, peeps.
01:48Like, last best chance probably is happening right now.
01:54And to simply have that happen because you were running down the court.
01:59Like, just to have your body do that to you when you were an elite athlete.
02:06I just, I can't imagine how frustrating last night must have been for Steph Curry.
02:14Well, it's frustrating for any person when you have an injury like that.
02:18Where it's one thing if you go to the hole and you get fouled and you land.
02:23And it's an ankle, a knee, whatever it is.
02:25Okay, that happened.
02:27I got fouled.
02:28I landed awkwardly and I got hurt.
02:30But this was, and I do think that it happened on the three where he did a little crossover.
02:36And he stepped back and he shot the three.
02:38That might have been when it happened.
02:39Yeah, I don't know.
02:40And, you know, only he knows when it happened.
02:42But it's a non-contact thing.
02:45And you know this now that you're 50 years old in your own life where there are days where you get out of bed wrong.
02:52Or, you know, you try to open the door and you cross over your body and you turn the handle.
02:57And you feel something in your shoulder and it's frustrating.
03:01My calf locked up in the knockout tournament and I still have no idea.
03:04I have no idea why.
03:05I don't even know when.
03:07Yes.
03:07And, you know, and then a few days later it went away.
03:11And meanwhile, Grandy actually is grabbing the trophy as you're laying this out there, which is funny because.
03:16Complete coincidence.
03:17No.
03:18Right.
03:18That's fine.
03:19Our new hire, Zach, said, hey, what's that trophy for?
03:21I am not even kidding.
03:22I'm just going to call you Zaza.
03:24You won because I got hurt.
03:26It's fine.
03:27Yep.
03:27It's totally fine.
03:28And I'm kidding.
03:29I need you to.
03:30You can't have that leaning.
03:31I need it flat.
03:32Yeah.
03:33I've got my OCD will not allow that to.
03:36Okay.
03:36He's 28.
03:37So he has no idea.
03:39Steph Curry at 37.
03:40And I understand he is an elite athlete and you're a sports talk host.
03:45But when you get older, the frustration of things like that, it grows.
03:50And so you're Steph, you're 37, and you've worked your butt off to get to this point.
03:55And you've got a bum thumb and you are one of the most fit athletes in the world.
04:00And then you step back to shoot a three and you pop your hammy.
04:04Really frustrating.
04:05No, but I got to imagine that the thoughts that are going through his head in that moment,
04:10because in that moment, you don't know that your team is going to hang on and win that game.
04:15In that moment, like, Steph is sitting with the idea, I would think, in that locker room of,
04:24well, that might be it for this year.
04:27And then, I mean, that might be it, period.
04:31Like, we may not get back into the conference semifinals again.
04:34Yeah.
04:35I don't know if this is ever going to happen again.
04:38And that's still true.
04:39I know they won the game.
04:41And so there's a little bit of optimism.
04:42But just that feeling of, I don't know if my team's going to be able to do enough to get this back in my control.
04:51And what Steve Kerr always talked about, that at-bat.
04:54Give Steph that at-bat.
04:56Well, he's in the middle of the at-bat.
04:58And now the at-bat kind of got taken away from him.
05:00And now someone needs to reproduce the at-bat for him.
05:03And that's got to be a very naked feeling.
05:06For sure, especially when you are Steph Curry.
05:09And the majority of these games that you've won, these titles, have not only gone through you,
05:15because you had Clay and Draymond, and you had KD for a couple of them.
05:18But you are the Batman, as everyone's talked about.
05:21And so now you are maybe Batman in the Dark Knight series, where you wind up in the bottom of that hole where Bane grew up.
05:31And now you're stuck there with a broken back, and you're waiting to get better so you can climb out and then rejoin the forces of Gotham to try to make things right.
05:40But right now, you're kind of stuck.
05:42And you're banking on Buddy and Jimmy and Draymond and Pat and all the fellas to pick you up.
05:48That's going to be a tough one.
05:50But they're up 1-0.
05:52They're up 1-0 in the series.
05:53They've got home court advantage.
05:54And they've got the Buddy and Butler show, which is a ton of fun, if nothing else.
06:01All right.
06:02So does last night feel like a win or a loss?
06:048-8-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-7.
06:06Steve Kerr in about 90 minutes.
06:08Let's go out to Jason in Excelsior.
06:11Hey, Jason.
06:12What's going on?
06:13Hey, guys.
06:14Good to hear me.
06:15We got you.
06:16All right.
06:17All right.
06:17I got hung up on earlier.
06:18I think it's AT&T.
06:19I blend them.
06:20Yeah.
06:21So just a shameless plug here.
06:23You know, I'm a CYO dad, and I always show up St. Brendan, St. Cecilia's, but we're an Our Lady of Mercy school here in Westlake.
06:31So I don't know if you guys know, St. Brendan's used to beat me when I was 14 years old.
06:36But anyways, yeah, just a shout out to them because I'm going to start coaching their basketball team there.
06:41Yeah.
06:41So I called earlier, actually, for Spencer.
06:43But, you know, for Buddy, my son actually went to the summer camp, the Warriors summer camp at SF State.
06:48Buddy signed, gave him an autograph.
06:50And I'm going to be honest here.
06:51I wasn't that excited.
06:53You know, when the autograph came, I thought Steph Curry was going to show up to the summer camp.
06:57You know, I didn't want to say it, but it's true.
07:01I saw the autograph.
07:02I said, no, Steph Curry didn't show up.
07:03You know, but like we all saw, he started dragging the threes, and then that went away.
07:11So I quickly became not a fan.
07:14And now I'm back, though, and I'm just trying.
07:16I'm feeling a little bit desperate.
07:17You know, I'm an OG Warriors fan.
07:20My dad used to take us to Kezar.
07:22We saw Daniel Marshall, Victor Alexander, all those OG guys.
07:26So, you know, it's exciting to see right now.
07:28But anyways, I'm hoping Buddy can keep this going.
07:32And again, thanks for taking my call.
07:34Shout out to our lady.
07:35Mercy Bulldogs.
07:36Appreciate you guys.
07:37Jason, thanks.
07:38Appreciate it.
07:39Listen, I really feel confident that as a fan, I'm going to be able to keep my word on this.
07:45It's different now.
07:46It's different, and I think that's what Jason's essentially talking about.
07:50Buddy Heald, for me, is now cemented in Warriors lore, wherever this goes from here, even if it is just something you look back on and laugh.
07:58And maybe that is what it will end up being.
08:01But it doesn't matter.
08:02It doesn't matter.
08:03Buddy's mistakes.
08:04Buddy's missed shots.
08:05Buddy, don't dribble.
08:07Buddy, don't dribble.
08:09Buddy, doesn't use the backboard.
08:10Whatever, all of it, it is now whimsical and funny to me because he has brought a completely different vibe.
08:18He has brought extra basketball.
08:20He has brought fun.
08:23There's a reason Steve Kerr a few weeks ago told us that Steph Curry said that Buddy Heald is one of his favorite teammates of all time.
08:30It's a huge, huge statement.
08:31And we wondered why in the moment.
08:33I think we're starting to see why.
08:35Look at what this guy provides for the entire Warrior experience behind the scenes.
08:40Yeah, he provides joy.
08:42And when he's on the court, he provides baskets.
08:44And you're going to need more of that with Steph Curry out for Game 2 and who knows how much further beyond that.
08:51It feels like Curry's going to be out for Game 3, 4, maybe 5.
08:55We don't know.
08:56But in the meantime, you're going to need that Buddy that you saw last night and the Buddy you saw in Game 7.
09:02So I'm with you.
09:02No matter what happens between now and the end of his days, he's gotten into a whole new area.
09:08And I feel the same way about Andrew Wiggins where all the thing about K-Wig and he takes possessions off and he's quiet and all the rest of it.
09:16Without Wiggins, you don't win that title.
09:19So Wiggins will forever, in my mind, be remembered as a great warrior just based on what he did that year.
09:25Let's go next to Bill in San Jose.
09:28Hi, Bill.
09:28Thanks for calling.
09:30Hey, can you guys hear me okay?
09:32We got you.
09:34Okay.
09:35I just, great, great game.
09:38Really fun.
09:40But, you know, Minnesota's going to make the adjustments.
09:45And, you know, I think if we lose it out in the next four games or so, it's still been a great year.
09:54I really enjoyed it.
09:56But let's not, let's not get too euphoric.
10:00I mean, you know, Minnesota's a very good team when they play well.
10:05I'm not sure why they played so poorly.
10:07But I think we're just a little euphoric right now and not realistic, you know, so that's all.
10:14Okay.
10:15Bill, thanks.
10:16No love for the warrior defense, right?
10:18I mean, I don't know if I want to watch any games with Bill.
10:21That's all.
10:22Right.
10:22I love you, Bill.
10:23Thanks for calling.
10:24Like, there's no game one euphoria.
10:27You know, what there is is like, okay, they won on the road without Steph Curry.
10:31Yeah.
10:31Like, oh.
10:32That's awesome.
10:33Yeah, totally.
10:33Right.
10:34And they need to win three more, and then they need to win four more, and then they need
10:37to win four more.
10:38So, I'm not looking at, you know, win number five in the postseason and thinking, we're going
10:43to beat championship.
10:44No, but here's where I'll agree.
10:46I'm going to agree with Bill, because you and I already shared this thought, and I think
10:49we'll dive further into it tomorrow.
10:52But here's what I do think.
10:54I'm not euphoric.
10:56I'm also not like, yes, is Minnesota going to play better?
10:59Sure.
10:59They can't play any worse.
11:01So, yeah, Minnesota's going to be better.
11:03I don't think the Warriors are going to sweep the Minnesota Timberwolves.
11:06I do think this.
11:08Look, if the Warriors end up losing this series and Steph Curry can't play, I have arrived
11:15at a spot that I call gravy, which means anything that the Warriors are able to achieve from
11:22here is gravy.
11:24Now, I'm going to take the gravy back off the table if Steph comes back and he's healthy
11:28and they win a series and they start a new series with him healthy.
11:31That's different.
11:32But the fact that they're already in the second round, which is what many of us thought was
11:37kind of par.
11:38It's kind of like the even land here in round two.
11:40I gave you the over-under of four and a half wins.
11:43And they have officially taken the over.
11:44They've got five wins.
11:46But now that they're doing without Steph, I just don't know if the word expectation lives
11:51here anymore.
11:52Hope lives here.
11:53But I don't know that the word expectation can live here anymore.
11:57So that changes the vibe for me.
11:59That's where hope lives.
12:01And that means it's gravy.
12:03If they can come out of this somehow, that's amazing.
12:07But I'm not going to be like livid at the Warriors and call them chokers if they can't
12:10beat the Wolves without their best player.
12:12Well, I wouldn't have been in that place anyway because the Wolves were favored going into
12:17the series with a healthy Steph Curry.
12:19So yeah, but not everyone looked at it that way.
12:20Right.
12:21But for me, and I said this before, if you just get to the second round and you lose
12:25to, and we were using the Lakers as an example because we thought that it would be the Lakers
12:29and it wasn't.
12:30But if you go out and you lose in six or seven to whomever, I'm not going to be mad.
12:35I'm not going to say choke this or disappointment that because only one team will win the West
12:41and only one team will win the title.
12:42And you're one of eight teams remaining.
12:44So now that Steph is out, does it change my expectations?
12:49No, not really.
12:50Because the way you beat Minnesota and the way you can still continue to beat Minnesota exists
12:56without Steph Curry.
12:57You're a good defensive team.
12:59And you've got championship pedigree with Draymond and Kavon and with Steve Kerr and
13:04kind of with Jimmy Butler.
13:05He's never won a title, but he's been through it.
13:08So, all right, Steve, coming up at five o'clock, what are you going to do?
13:11Hot shot?
13:12Well, you're this great coach.
13:14Now you need to do things differently.
13:16Yes, he does.
13:17But I can't say that I would expect them to do it well.
13:19Like, I don't think you can say they've got championship pedigree.
13:22They've never done it without Steph before.
13:24So they don't have this pedigree.
13:26They've won series without Steph before.
13:28Yeah, but that was when there were other, like, youthful Hall of Fame scorers on the roster.
13:34So, and they were so much more dominant than the teams that they were playing.
13:39That's not the case this time around.
13:41So I hear what you're saying, but you're coming from a place where you weren't expecting them to win this round anyway.
13:48Here's what I mean by this.
13:49Well, it was when we made our predictions, so yeah.
13:52Yeah, so I don't know, but if I had said to you, even if those of you out there that thought the Warriors would struggle in this series,
14:00even if you thought that, you wouldn't have still thought that if they had won last night and Steph were healthy.
14:05If you win game one, the expectation, especially on the road, expectation changes for everybody.
14:11Everybody goes, oh, just like we did with Houston.
14:13Oh, we're going to win this series.
14:15We're going to win this series.
14:1677% when you win game one.
14:18And you immediately would expect the Warriors to take this series.
14:22But Steph is not there, so I can't do that.
14:25I do not.
14:26I'm not saying they can't.
14:28I'm not going to use the word expect the Warriors to win this series.
14:32Well, I don't expect it.
14:33So it's gravy if they do.
14:35Yeah, I don't see it as gravy.
14:37I mean, you don't have to.
14:38Yeah, and if I was to bet it right now as a neutral observer and I would look at the Warriors plus 190 to win the series right now, up one game to none.
14:47That's crazy.
14:48That's a juicy price.
14:49I mean, without their best player.
14:51Well, he'll be back, I believe.
14:53Right.
14:53Well, if he's not back, that means you're losing five.
14:55I mean, if you lose the next four, then he's not coming back.
14:58You don't know that he's back game six.
15:00Right.
15:00We can't say that definitively right now.
15:03You can, and you never know with a hamstring.
15:04And, you know, Doc Pandia joined the morning roast today, and he laid it out very eloquently as far as what the timeline is.
15:11And, you know, a lot of times it's a week.
15:14It could be two.
15:15It could be three.
15:15You just never know, especially with a first-time hamstring injury.
15:19Doc Pandia this morning.
15:20I think especially given his age, you know, whenever these hamstrings tear, basically what you're depending on to basically get you back quickly is there's some degree of scar tissue that's in there.
15:28We know that all those scar tissue can sometimes hold an area together, especially if you've got a lot of other muscle around it.
15:33That area is more prone to cause pain, to re-injure itself.
15:36And if you look at hamstring injuries, the two things you worry about besides getting back on the court is that there's a high rate of re-injury.
15:41We see that a lot in football and baseball players.
15:44And there's also a rate of injury to other parts of your body.
15:46Your hamstrings are so important to helping stabilize your lower legs.
15:49So it may not be an hamstring.
15:51Are you worried about an ankle or something else?
15:52So that's really where the medical staff has to make this decision of, okay, do we push it to get him back?
15:58Or are we being extra cautious so that we don't get that repeat injury or get something else?
16:02And that's where, unfortunately, what happens with, you know, pro athletes is you're looking at how the team's doing and what's the risk of potentially, can we win without him playing?
16:10Or do we have to take that risk and put him in because we're worried about how the series is going?
16:13Yeah, I think the rub right now, if they say re-evaluation in a week, and a week from tonight is game five, the rub for me would be if the Warriors lose all three, games two, three, and four.
16:28And if Steph is like, I could play, Celebrini might be like, eh, it's not great, but Steph is like the Warriors are staring at the end of the season.
16:41Would he push it?
16:42Would he push it and come out and give it a try?
16:44That's what I see as the rub, and you very much hope that's not the case.
16:48Like, I think that, you know, if the Warriors can at least, you know, obviously, they've already at least split in Minnesota.
16:55If they can at least then split back in Golden State, then you go from there, and you see what happens.
17:03I mean, who knows?
17:04Maybe they'll surprise us.
17:05Maybe they go out and win again tomorrow night.
17:07Yeah.
17:07You know, so, but that's what I see as the, like, the angst kind of action, which is if they're down 3-1 a week from tonight, and they evaluate, and he's like, yeah, I'm feeling good, Rick.
17:20Right.
17:21Okay, that's when you do your little speed line.
17:24Okay, hotshot, what do you do?
17:27What do you do?
17:28That's right, and I don't think that even if he, you know, if they're down 3-1, and they look at the medical, and they look at where he's at, unless he's ready to go, they're not going to play him.
17:37And that's just what the Warriors have done.
17:39That's true.
17:39And Steve Kerr has always deferred to Dr. Rick Celebrini, and I look at this series, and not only what I saw last night, but what we saw throughout the course of the year, and Minnesota was only one game better than you, and Minnesota is, they're a good team.
17:54And Anthony Edwards is a very good player, but what you did last night was, defensively, you shut them down.
18:01And I think outside of Anthony Edwards, who on their team really scares you on offense?
18:06Not really anybody.
18:07I don't like open shots from Nas Reed.
18:10Fine, he was great last night.
18:11Yeah, they go in.
18:12Good for you, Nas.
18:13And Julius Randle has a completely different gear that did not show off last night.
18:18Yeah, but Draymond Green is a great defensive matchup for him.
18:21Absolutely.
18:21Like, I'm stuck between how well did the Warriors play defensively versus how awful were the Timberwolves.
18:29Well, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
18:30Somewhere in the middle.
18:31Somewhere in the middle.
18:31Absolutely.
18:32The Warriors have been great defensively for a long time, and Minnesota was worse on offense than they have been all year.
18:37Right.
18:37Like, I want to give the Warriors a lot of credit for last night.
18:39I don't want to give it all to them.
18:41Of course.
18:41The Wolves were just terrible.
18:43Right.
18:44Absolutely terrible.
18:45Normally in the NBA playoffs, there's the zigzag theory, where the team that loses game one zigs, and then they zag in game two.
18:52And last night we saw that with Indiana until we didn't.
18:55Until we didn't.
18:56Right.
18:56Oh, yeah.
18:57Thunder by 1,000 tonight.
18:59Oklahoma City by 1,000 tonight.
19:02Right.
19:03I mean.
19:03That's from me to you.
19:04And the spread's 10 and a half, right?
19:06And Boston by probably 38?
19:08That one.
19:10Not so much.
19:10Not as sure on that one.
19:12Well, and they have injuries, too.
19:12Not as sure on that one.
19:14Not in Boston, New York, but Oklahoma City by 1,000.
19:16Yeah.
19:17I'm with you.
19:17By 1,000 tonight.
19:18And I don't want to be the one to say this today because the game's tomorrow, but I would say Minnesota by probably 29 tomorrow.
19:27I don't agree with that one.
19:29Because the Warriors will turn this into, I mean, unless they get really hot from three, maybe.
19:35But I think the Warriors are going to turn this into a much slower-paced game.
19:39It's going to be hard to run away from them.
19:40Yeah, but, I mean, if Minnesota's at least decent, I think it's going to be hard for the Warriors.
19:46Already having that mentality of already having one game, and you heard Jimmy actually mention it in the postgame,
19:52and I know we're going to play the comments of he and Buddy Heald a little bit later,
19:56but Jimmy even intimated the whole idea about, yeah, you know, we already got one.
20:01We already got one here in Minnesota.
20:02Yeah, that's true.
20:03That's true.
20:04But I'd go for two.
20:05I really would.
20:06Of course.
20:07Let's go to Theo in the East Bay.
20:09Hi, Theo.
20:09What's going on?
20:12What's up, guys?
20:13Yeah, look, to me, I don't want to get on here and sound like a troll or anything,
20:16but I feel like even with Steph out, I know you guys just presented some new information
20:22saying that he was crying and stuff like that.
20:24And I don't want to sound like some lunatic right now,
20:26just telling him to just pick up the ball, go and dribble, and do your thing.
20:29But I think with him out right now, the Warriors will still be okay,
20:35and we don't know how serious it was.
20:38I mean, you just said he was crying, so, you know, I'll just go off of what Sham said,
20:43which was he's going to be reevaluated in a week.
20:47And to me, I mean, let him rest, and if it's not as bad as everybody is thinking it might be,
20:55he'll be good to go for the next round and then even further than that,
20:59and that's how I'm looking at it, just as a fan.
21:01And also, this is why we got Jimmy Butler.
21:05Jimmy Butler, this is your time now.
21:07Against your former team, get out there, be playoff Jimmy.
21:11Buddy, stay hot, please.
21:14And then also the Wolves, I mean, all we got to do is still be that defensive team that we have been
21:21because I think in the playoffs, we've been one of the best defensive teams.
21:25So, you know, let's get, or the Wolves, they rolled over the Lakers because Lakers ain't got no size.
21:32We got Draymond, we got Post, and the Iron Man himself, Vaughn Looney.
21:38So if we can just, you know, stay the course, let Jimmy do his thing,
21:43hopefully Steph comes back, we'll be all right.
21:46That's all I got, boys.
21:47Theo, thanks, man.
21:48It's a lot of optimism, and I've always got love for that.
21:50However, if we're going to say the Wolves beat the Lakers because they've got no size,
21:54guess who's got even less size than the Lakers?
21:57Raise your hand, Warrior fans.
21:58That's you.
22:00So I know you mentioned some interior players who are good, Looney, Draymond, etc.,
22:06but the Warriors are not flashing any size at the Minnesota Timberwolves.
22:11It's a better defensive team than the Lakers.
22:14So, you know, you can lean on that if you want, and you're not wrong.
22:19And, yes, they do have somebody who has been an NBA legit one in the playoffs.
22:25And so, yeah, like I'm with you.
22:27I'm buying it.
22:28I'm buying it as very possible.
22:32All I'm saying is that I'm going to remove any expectation.
22:36I do not sit here and, like, the last series I expected the Warriors to win.
22:41Agreed.
22:42I would have thought that that was a miss if they had come out and not won that series.
22:47I don't feel that way this time if Steph Curry's going to miss most of the series.
22:52I just don't feel that way.
22:53I think that's too much to ask.
22:54They can do it, but I think it's too much to expect.
22:57And I wouldn't have expected it even with Steph Curry healthy.
23:01The expectation for me was get into a deep series and let's just see.
23:05And so, for me, that expectation has not changed.
23:07Like, 6 or 7?
23:08No, go 6 or 7, and, you know, you're up 1-0, so go ahead and win the damn thing.
23:12So, for me, I'm going to go ahead and win the damn thing.
