00:00When something like this happens, the focus shifts to the coach, doesn't it?
00:03It's like, you're the one that's got to go figure this out.
00:07You got to go come up with something now.
00:09Right.
00:09How are you going to put the biscuit in the basket now?
00:12Exactly.
00:12You got to figure it out.
00:14But, I mean, who do you turn to and who starts and, like, where do you get the offense and all the rest of it?
00:19I do think that Buddy made it, at least last night, in a small sample.
00:23He made it a little bit easier because he kind of went into Steph mode, which is,
00:27I'm going to shoot these crazy threes.
00:29I'm going to the hoop.
00:30I'm going to try to score.
00:31I'm Batman.
00:32Yeah.
00:32Buddy Heald thought that he was Batman.
00:36He turned into baby Steph for one night.
00:39Is that sustainable?
00:40We'll find out.
00:41We sure will.
00:42We sure will.
00:44So, you'll hear this coming up in a little bit.
00:47Until then, we'll hear you.
00:48We've been asking.
00:49Now, knowing that Steph Curry is out at least two, three, and four, games two, three, and four,
00:54does last night feel like a win or does it feel like a loss?
00:57You won the game.
00:58You lost your star.
00:598-8-8-9-5-7-9-5-70.
01:02How about Mike in Burlingame?
01:03Hey, Mike, thanks for calling.
01:06Yeah.
01:07Hello.
01:08Hello, Mike.
01:09Hello.
01:10Yep.
01:11Hi, there.
01:11Yep.
01:11Hi.
01:12I'm calling because Curry, to be honest with you, he's my favorite player, and if you go
01:21back and look at the very beginning, it wasn't Curry who won the MVP of the finals.
01:27It was Iguodala.
01:28It wasn't Curry who won the second one.
01:31It was Durant.
01:32And Durant won two of them in a row.
01:34And he would have won three, but he got hurt.
01:37It was he who got hurt, and Curry didn't win the title.
01:42Toronto did.
01:44So, listen, they've done it without Curry as the main guy.
01:48In fact, Iguodala came off the bench and ran things.
01:52Getting $16 million off the bench.
01:54So, they've done it before.
01:55Now, how many years has Curry played, and how many MVP finals does he have?
02:00Hey, Mike.
02:01Mike.
02:02One, Mike, is the answer.
02:03You're awesome for listening to our show.
02:06And you live in the city where my dad taught for years.
02:11I have nothing but love for everything that makes you you, Mike.
02:16But this is one of the worst takes I've ever heard in my entire life.
02:20Mike.
02:20Well, you didn't let him finish.
02:21Well, he's still here.
02:22Go ahead, Mike.
02:23Tell us how the Warriors have won anything in the last decade plus without Steph Curry.
02:30Anything.
02:30How many MVP finals does he have?
02:33Irrelevant, Mike.
02:34You're acting like that's the only person on the court who ever wins the MVP.
02:39Plus, 90% of Warrior fans will tell you that Iguodala should not have won the NBA finals MVP of the year that he did.
02:46That was kind of quirky because he was guarding LeBron and somehow held him to 40 one time.
02:51So, people loved what he did.
02:53That nobody's winning anything without Steph Curry.
02:57Do you disagree with that?
02:58No, I say that everybody knows in their heart that he needed a rest.
03:05He made seven turnovers in one game.
03:07The guy did.
03:07He was dribbling behind his back.
03:09He calls it a performance.
03:11Listen, he needs a mental retake.
03:13When Jimmy got here, baby, that's when it all changed.
03:16They had Curry.
03:17It was Butler.
03:18Now, you know and I know the answer is this.
03:21The Butler did it.
03:24He brought it home.
03:26Thank you, Mike.
03:26Thanks, Mike.
03:27The audacity.
03:28The Butler has never done it in his career.
03:35I love Jimmy Butler.
03:37I've also never seen in my life an athlete get more credit for coming in second place.
03:43Ever.
03:44Ever.
03:46So, I just, I'm sorry.
03:48I do not want to hear that the Warriors can do bubkis without Steph Curry and all of the
03:54evidence of all the things they've done when Steph wasn't the leader.
03:58You don't think that they can beat Minnesota without Steph Curry?
04:01I didn't say that.
04:02But he's drawn.
04:02Well, they've won series without Steph Curry before.
04:04Yes, they have.
04:05But he's, first of all, not as an underdog they haven't.
04:09Not later in rounds they haven't.
04:11And this one hasn't unfolded yet.
04:13I've been very clear.
04:14I don't think this series is over because he's out.
04:17But this call is drawing on history.
04:20And apparently diminishing everything that Steph Curry has done because he was never apparently
04:26the most important player on his own team.
04:29Even though we all damn well know he's literally, with a capital T-H-E, the most important
04:34player on the team and always has been.
04:36I'm not co-signing on that part of it.
04:37Okay, that's all I'm saying.
04:38I'm looking at the history of a Warrior team without Steph in the playoffs and them being
04:44able to beat Houston.
04:45And yes, they were the number one overall seed.
04:48They were the team that won 73 games.
04:51So they were obviously a better team than this team was.
04:55But you lost Steph early and then he came back and he got hurt a second time.
04:59And you still went out and you beat Houston in the best of seven.
05:02And I know that you were a favorite.
05:05You were the number one seed.
05:06And Houston was the eighth seed.
05:08And you still went out there and you were able to beat a Houston team.
05:12So Minnesota, a team that is probably comparable to you in record in the regular year.
05:18You were better than them in the regular season.
05:19And now you have Jimmy Butler.
05:21So it doesn't mean to me that because you lost Steph that you can't go out there and win.
05:26Doesn't mean that to me either.
05:27For me, Mike went too far.
05:29Mike was going a little too far.
05:31A little?
05:32Well, yeah.
05:33And you took offense.
05:34I mean, Mike's point was not even about this series.
05:38Mike's point is that the Warriors have never actually done anything with Steph as their leader.
05:42That's what he said.
05:44They've done all kinds of things without Steph.
05:46No, they haven't.
05:48No, they haven't.
05:50Period.
05:51No, they haven't.
05:53How many times have you heard Warriors come on this station and say that everything that's happened in this city for the last 12 years is because of him?
06:01It's because of him.
06:02Not in spite of him.
06:03Not next to him.
06:05None of that crap.
06:06Here's Jimmy Butler on TNT last night.
06:08Steph said this morning that game ones of a series are always just a feeling out process.
06:12What do you learn from this game one that you're going to bring into Thursday as a team?
06:15Steph is our best player.
06:17And the game is much easier when we got him.
06:19Jimmy, simple enough.
06:21Congrats on the win.
06:22We'll see you Thursday.
06:24Basketball's a whole lot easier when our best player is on the floor.
06:28Yes, you're right.
06:29The Warriors are very lucky that they've got someone else who has performed as an NBA 1 before.
06:36But, I don't know, that's just me.
06:37I'm not letting anybody come on this show and say that the Warriors have never been driven by Steph before.
06:43It's a ludicrous take.
06:44It is ludicrous.
06:45I also think that you can look at what this team has done in the past in the playoffs without Steph and still get some confidence from that.
06:52And that's why I look at this series where you're up one game to none.
06:56And you've got, you know, a series where you're not going to have Steph Curry.
07:00And you think that I personally don't think that it's over.
07:03And I also think that they still have a very good chance to win it.
07:06And if I was to make a bet, I would bet the Warriors do win the series.
07:10Okay, and I'm not going to disagree with the idea that they can win this series.
07:16I'm just, I'm not going to use history as some sort of reference that the Warriors don't need him.
07:23And they've leaned on others in the past.
07:25Andre Iguodala drove the bus.
07:27Give me a freaking break.
07:29Oracle Ochoa in Oakland.
07:31What's up, Oracle?
07:32Thanks for calling.
07:33What's happening, guys?
07:35Can you hear me clearly?
07:36We got you.
07:39Nice, man.
07:40Called in last week before game three.
07:42And I took it to the fans a little bit and chase our own fans.
07:46And they responded.
07:47I think we did good at home.
07:49Three and four was solid.
07:50But what happened?
07:51Game six.
07:53I think this all went down with game six.
07:56When Curry, I just think if we win game six in that series,
08:01I think Curry might not be injured.
08:05That was deflating to lose that game at home.
08:08The first thought when he got hurt last night was game six.
08:11And we needed to close that out at home.
08:13That would have given him like five or so days of rest.
08:16And maybe, just maybe, that doesn't happen last night.
08:19But here we are.
08:20It's in the past now.
08:21Let's move forward.
08:22I'm not giving up hope.
08:24I'm not having any expectations, to your point.
08:27But we do have hope.
08:28And I think we're in this.
08:30Why?
08:31Jimmy Butler is a big reason.
08:33Our defense is a big reason.
08:34I just think we need to slow the game down, lean on our defense.
08:38And, man, if we can get to game five, two to two,
08:43if we can split it home and get one of these next three and go two to two,
08:49with Curry coming back, man, I'll take that.
08:52I think we got to take that.
08:54I think we got to take a game five, going back on the road,
08:58win two out of three.
08:59Curry, we've proven we can win in Minnesota.
09:01We've proven we can win on the road with our defense.
09:04Curry could use a rest.
09:06I think that could be the silver lining.
09:08A week off, if we're really going for the ring, he could use a week off.
09:12If we can just get one of these next three and get back to two to two, game five,
09:18we got a shot.
09:19But, man, our fans, we got to keep bringing it in Chase Center.
09:22That's my take, man.
09:23No expectation, but a lot of hope.
09:26Let's go, Jimmy Butler.
09:27If you could get that Miami team to the finals twice with that team around him
09:34and you compare it to what we got around us,
09:36I think we got a damn good shot to win this series.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Oracle, thanks.
09:41I agree with everything you're saying other than the fact that it sounds like
09:45you're making an assumption that Steph's going to play in game five.
09:48No idea.
09:49A, no idea, I would argue probably not, just based on the timing of things.
09:55That would be Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday.
09:59That would be a week from today.
10:01And that's the reevaluation period.
10:03So how many times have you seen the Warriors say,
10:05we're going to reevaluate him, and then on that day they're like,
10:08yep, he's good, he's playing.
10:09It's very rare.
10:10Especially with an injury like this.
10:12Exactly.
10:12I think game six would be the earliest, quote-unquote,
10:16which can you be still in the series?
10:18Yeah.
10:18Of course.
10:19Could you be up 3-2?
10:20That, to me, feels a little bit aggressive,
10:23but even if you're down 3-2 and he comes back and that game's at home,
10:28I love your chances.
10:28Not over, for sure.
