00:00Shell Series Round 8 was a weekend full of surprises.
00:06Ford's first poll, thanks to a guffsy effort by motivational expert, Glenn Seaton.
00:16A crash landing for the Red Baron, shot down under heavy fire.
00:23A wet and wild infield, where you really needed four-wheel drive to keep your dreams alive.
00:30I think he's bogged.
00:35Henry's boys suffered more broken noses than a martial arts movie,
00:38and a spin that cost Ford that much-needed first win.
00:45Three different winners from three heats.
00:47An overall victory to Jason Barguana, number one for the second year in a row.
00:55Yeah, Winton really turned it on, and the pressure is rising.
00:59Get ready for a boil-over, as we welcome V8 Supercar fans across the land to Sydney's Oran Park,
01:05and the return of Reverse Grid Racing.
01:07Round 9 of the 2000 Shell Championship Series.

01:43It's the middle of winter, but you'd never know it.
01:45know it, Oren Park and a huge crowd lapping up the sunshine and a marvellous atmosphere.
01:50Hello I'm Greg Rust, welcome to our coverage of Round 9 of the Shell Championship Series.
01:54Well Mark Scaife has already begun engraving his moniker on the 2000 title, it's not safely
01:59in the bag yet but gee it's getting close.
02:01The real stories emerging from this season though are some of the against all odds victories
02:05by some of the other teams engaged in a David and Goliath battle with HRT.
02:09Stephen Richards' performance at Canberra and Jason Barguana's win at Winton, as we
02:13just saw, they're two that immediately spring to mind, maybe we'll see another name added
02:17to that list today.
02:18Right now though Glenn Seaton is the man best positioned to break Scaife's stranglehold,
02:22he's 120 points behind, Garth Tander is just 42 further in arrears and just ahead of defending
02:28champion Craig Lowndes.
02:29Paul Radisic still mathematically in the hunt for the crown, Barguana's victory at Round
02:348 has drawn him level with Neil Crompton and John Bauer hoping for a change of fortune here
02:38after what has been a horrid season so far for the 95 champion.
02:42Now reverse grid racing is back on the schedule here at Oran Park but unlike Canberra, the
02:46format is a little different.
02:47With all the answers to that and life's little problems, here's Barry Sheen.
02:50Hello mate, welcome.
02:51Yes, I have to say I'm a real fan of the reverse grid racing.
02:54I think it's okay, it can be hard for some of the drivers but I think what goes around
02:59comes around.
03:00I think it's all pretty even and it's great for the spectators.
03:02The difference is here, they're not reversing the whole grid, they're only reversing the top
03:0710.
03:08Other things of interest, the forwards are going good again now.
03:11Seaton's really consistent, he's up there in the qualifying and that so at last we get
03:16a bit of competition for the HRT lot.
03:18Let's hope it continues here today.
03:19We'll take a look now for you at the top 10 and how they finished in qualifying.
03:22The Holden Racing Team Commodores, well they've started here on the pole for the last four
03:26years in a row.
03:27Mark Skate backing up last year's effort.
03:29He was just four tenths shy of the qualifying lap record.
03:32So close to the competition that just two 1,000 separate Glenn Seaton and Lowndes.
03:36A good effort by Murphy who repeated his winter performance climbing up the order in the
03:40second qualifying session.
03:41And Russell Ingle like Merv who'd been struggling with setup came good when it counted.
03:45Let's go to Mark Osler.
03:47Well Mark Skate continued HRT's domination of the 2000 Shell Championship Series with pole
03:53position at Iron Park.
03:54But the man splitting the Holden Racing Team duo of Skate and Lowndes is Garth Tander.
03:58He starts off the outside of the front row.
04:00Garth, he split that Holden Racing Team duo.
04:02You obviously don't think this championship is over by a long shot, do you?
04:05No way, definitely not.
04:07We're just fighting on as much as we can.
04:09Obviously Canberra was fairly bad for us points wise so all we've got to do is just
04:12keep fighting on getting as many points as we can and where we end up at the end
04:16of the year is where we end up.
04:17So all we've got to do is just keep battling on.
04:19They're a tough team to beat aren't they?
04:20Like technically, driver strength, they've got the whole package over at Holden Racing
04:24Team haven't they?
04:25Well yeah they do and that's why they are doing so well.
04:28And it's taken our guys a lot of hard work and a lot of determination to be able to match
04:33them.
04:34And I think we're probably the only team that can consistently do it.
04:37And it's all credit to our guys because they've worked extremely hard to be able to match
04:40what the resources and the drivers and everything that HRT have got.
04:43Our guys are now starting to catch up.
04:45Now we always talk about starting in V8 supercar racing being critical but today's three
04:4920 minute races, boy those starts are going to be right on aren't they?
04:52Well absolutely and Oran Park isn't exactly what you call the best circuit for overtaking
04:56so a good start is what's required and then hopefully we can blaze off into the distance.
05:00Best of luck today.
05:02Yeah let's hope he does well.
05:04Oran Park, a real drivers track, 2.6 k's in length, some spectacular spots particularly
05:08across the dog leg and over the bridge but don't take my word for it, strap yourself in
05:12for a ride with Neil Crompton.
05:14Welcome to the hot seat at Oran Park in the Ford Pickford Racing V8 supercar.
05:21Oran Park, 2.62 kms, a pretty exciting bit of road, lots of undulation, quite difficult
05:27to actually get a car set up ideally for here.
05:30This is turn two quite slow, right about 75 odd k's, under the bridge, third gear, up
05:37to fourth, back to second for turn three, down in the go-kart section of the track.
05:46Careful on the throttle as you come out there, there's a few bumps, concrete walls being taken
05:51away from the left hand side here now so it's not quite as daunting as it once was, blind
05:56brown over the top of the hill and over the bridge.
05:59This is an exciting bit of road, it's quite tricky to get it right.
06:02You can see how much the road tips away down here through these S's.
06:06Use the curving a bit here, car dances around a little bit, this is a fast left hander, commonly
06:13referred to as Sutton's.
06:15And then up to the dog leg, another blind brown, car jumps onto two wheels, give it plenty
06:20over the other side, do not make a mistake because that wall is hard.
06:23This is the final corner, always difficult to get the power on the way we wanted to ideally
06:28come on.
06:29And a quick run down the straightway, you're good for about 240km an hour, that's Oran Park.
06:39Well if you thought that was exciting, stay with us, Oran Park is about to explode into life.
06:43All the action from race one coming your way, right after the break.
06:50Ohhhh!
06:51One day is not worth getting out of bed.
06:53Well done Glenn Seaton, he wins race three, and the 97 Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
06:57Ohhhh!
06:58Ohhhh!
06:59One day is not worth getting out of bed.
07:00Well done Glenn Seaton, he wins race three, and the 97 Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
07:02Ohhhh!
07:03That's the best!
07:04He's taken out Ingle!
07:05Three starts, three wins, the kid is the champ!
07:06Ohhhh!
07:07Look at that!
07:08See the Dortmund!
07:09Wow!
07:10That's going on!
07:11Sideways is Larry Hoppe in a beautiful flight!
07:14Oh man, that save of the day Larry!
07:15Some magic and mighty moments here at Oran Park Raceway, and what will we add to that chapter
07:16at the conclusion of that day at the end of Sunday, back of the day?
07:17Well done Glenn Seaton, and we're on the straightway and on the straightway.
07:18There was a little bit of a squirt.
07:19We've got a little discussion about the race, but it really was kind of a bit of a bit of
07:22the race, we caught a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a shift.
07:23Well done looking at the race.
07:24Well done, he has a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of an impact.
07:27Some magic and mighty moments here at Oren Park Raceway.
07:36And what will we add to that chapter at the conclusion of today's racing?
07:40Scaife and Tander on the front row for the first one.
07:42Lowndes and Seton on row two.
07:44Seton, the main forward flyer.
07:46Murphy and Ingle from row three.
07:47And Todd Kelly, that's a good performance, will line up alongside Longhurst.
07:50Paul Radisic and Stephen Richards, the ever-improving Kmart cars in qualifying.
07:54John Bow and John Faulkner.
07:55Mark Larkham in the Mitre 10 Ford and Jason Bargwana alongside Paul Morris in the big kept racing.
08:00Commodore and Stephen Ellery.
08:01Back on row nine, Rodney Forbes and Brad Jones.
08:04Stephen Johnson struggling a little bit with the second of the Shell Helix racing Fords alongside Larry Perkins.
08:09Crompton and Baird, Dougal McDougal and Cameron McConville on row 12.
08:13Big field of V8s here.
08:14Mick Donagher and Peter Doolman start out of row 13.
08:16Anthony Tratton and Rick Bates make another appearance in the Colour Scan team.
08:20Paul Wheel in all sorts of drama with the K&J thermal car.
08:24They just couldn't get it working properly in qualifying.
08:26Trevor Ashby, Steve Reid hit the bridge in fact.
08:28Did a lot of repair to that car.
08:30Got him back on the grid.
08:31Cameron McClain in trouble too.
08:32One of the many Ford teams in trouble with AU Fords here this weekend.
08:35It's been a great performance by the Landsvale smash team.
08:38He wasn't expected to be here but great to see Big Bird in action.
08:40This is John Bowen carrying the B clear and simple on-board camera.
08:44There's JB.
08:46All set for action in the Caterpillar Ford.
08:49Another man ready for action.
08:50We've got a great view out of the top of the windscreen to the Cat Ford.
08:53Mitre 10 Ford driver carrying our Mitre 10 in-car camera, Mark Larkham.
08:57And he also carries our very popular foot cam as well which we cut to during the races.
09:03Brad Jones, the Carlton and United on-board in the Aussie male Ford.
09:08The driver from Albury.
09:12Hasn't had the best of seasons, was hoping to do well particularly at his home track at
09:15the last round at Winton but it turned into an absolute shocker for him.
09:18Jason Bargwana, the big winner at Winton Motor Raceway two weeks ago.
09:22The walker in-car camera tells you the story.
09:24Riding on the floor with the nuggety 28-year-old.
09:27Tremendous drive at Winton.
09:29Not quite where he wants to be in qualifying but he saw him fight his way through from ninth
09:32to win the round overall in Victoria.
09:35Can he do it again today?
09:38Also carrying our in-cars today, Glenn Seaton and Paul Radisic.
09:43Seaton, the man probably best charged with trying to close that gap to Mark Scaife who
09:50leads the championship.
09:51Scaife will start from pole.
09:52120 points separate those two.
09:55In terms of the championship, Seaton will start on row two.
09:57He had a good performance in the second race at Winton.
10:01What can he do today?
10:02Ford Livet race analysis from Orrin Park Raceway.
10:0432 starters, 17 laps the distance for three heats.
10:07That's just under 45 k's.
10:09First to 14th, covered by one second in qualifying.
10:12Winner here last year was Mark Scaife.
10:14Can he do it again in 2000?
10:16Tell you what, we've got a reverse grid in race two.
10:17Could really mix things up.
10:18I tell you what, the first corner is going to be fun and games because it's a really difficult
10:22one.
10:22You go through a fast left-hand king, downhill into a tight left-hander and under the bridge.
10:26So if there's going to be any action, it's going to be there on the first lane.
10:30Well, amongst all the other laps, of course.
10:33As Barry mentioned, at the top of the telecast, Glenn Seaton has certainly been on the improve
10:38in the four-tick, but racing Falcon.
10:40There he sits on your screen to the left-hand side on the second row of the grid.
10:44Nestled in amongst five Commodores.
10:47Holden Brigade there.
10:49Enormous crowd in here today too.
10:50Traffic banked back.
10:51There's a lot of people here to watch the action.
10:53Getting set for action.
10:54Will it be Tander or will it be Scaife?
10:56Who will get the jump for race one in round nine of the Shell Championship Series?
11:00Lights go out.
11:01Scaife storms on the line.
11:02So too does Lowndes.
11:04Seaton got a great start and Tander is trying to run with him.
11:07Look at Lowndes coming through though.
11:08He's going to try and hold out Garth Tander.
11:11Tander's going to get hung out to dry here as they hit him towards the left-hander and down
11:16towards the bridge.
11:16Tander got a load of wheel spin there.
11:18He's initially got a decent bit of traction.
11:20Then she lit up and just went backwards.
11:23Big Field jostles their way through Coca-Cola corner under the bridge.
11:26Oh look, good drive for Tander there.
11:28Down round the go-kart section of the track for the first time.
11:31They're bumper to bumper.
11:32Door to door.
11:33Look at this.
11:34Fight by Tander.
11:35Tries to muscle on the outside of Craig Lowndes.
11:37They're going to go side by side up toward the bridge.
11:39Seek lots of slice of the action too.
11:41One of the Kmart Commodores in there as well as they come under our bridge cam.
11:44Sweep down toward the Essas for the first time.
11:48One of the Shell forwards there.
11:50Paul Radisic getting on the outside of the Asia Online Commodore.
11:53Of John Faulkner.
11:54And here they come.
11:56Mark Scaife in command on lap one.
11:58Yeah, where Radisic went wide there.
11:59There's a load of marbles there.
12:01So, uh, can't afford those Cameron McClane.
12:03He has had a rotten again so far.
12:05He's had all sorts of problems with that car.
12:07And it looks like that is continuing.
12:09So he is in pit lane.
12:11Didn't even get a start, we understand.
12:13Now the field sweep out of the final turn.
12:14Contact there between Radisic and John Faulkner.
12:16And the Asia Online Commodore.
12:19Scaife has cleared out a 1.15, 1.6 on the opening lap.
12:22He's almost a second quicker than his teammate Craig Louds.
12:25Look at this player, Radisic.
12:27Well, that Barney was on for almost a lap between the Shell forward and the Asia Online machine.
12:33Oh, somebody locking him up there in the background.
12:35For, uh, the flying Kiwi, Paul Radisic prevails.
12:38The order at the moment, after that first one, Mark Scaife, a 1.15.
12:41Oh, Kelly's turned Bob Warner in.
12:43Double there.
12:44Yeah, he's, uh...
12:45And Bob Warner now is very vulnerable, sitting on the outside of the track.
12:48Hopefully everyone can squeeze through.
12:50So, from the highs and highs to the lowest of lows, the winner,
12:55the winner of Motor Raceway two weeks ago,
12:57finds himself at the back of the field.
12:58Only two laps into race one.
13:00Be interesting to have a look at that again,
13:02because it did look as if Todd Kelly sort of went through a hole that wasn't there
13:07and going with the runoff.
13:08So, the order at the moment, Scaife Lowndes.
13:10Tander in third seat for the first of the forwards.
13:12Greg Murphy.
13:13Oh, look at the back of Stephen Johnson's there.
13:15That's oil, it looks like.
13:17There is some damage to the front of that car, though, Barry.
13:20So, I don't know whether he's been in a concerto of some kind.
13:23Wouldn't be as surprising if it's an oil corner or something.
13:26It's all going and running underneath him.
13:28And, um...
13:29It looks pretty terrible.
13:30Well, you'd have to say that.
13:32Power steering.
13:33Power steering, he's saying.
13:34You can hear him there talking to the team.
13:36No doubt to team boss, Dean Orr.
13:38Yeah, that'll be all the power steering fluid just flowing all the way back.
13:42Well, these cars do see this quite often.
13:45It's very important to have a power steering system.
13:46The steering loads in these cars are enormous.
13:49And when that power steering goes,
13:51you end up with extremely heavy steering wheel.
13:54Feel very, very difficult to drive the car under those circumstances.
13:56I'll be surprised if he's pulling up the racing line to allow other cars through.
14:01I suspect that car into the pits next time around.
14:04There's his team-mate Paul Radisic doing a good job.
14:07Now, let's take a closer look at that incident involving Barguana.
14:09That's the tail end of it, Barry.
14:10Yeah, just the end of it.
14:11We couldn't really see it.
14:13Holden Young Lions car in there.
14:15It's a shame because Kelly's been going really good.
14:17I mean, every race has been getting quicker and quicker.
14:20And, well, we'll have luck with this here.
14:23Scaife out in front at the moment.
14:25A 1.08.963.
14:27His last lap ahead of team-mate Craig Lowndes
14:29and defending Shell Series champion Garth Tander in third.
14:33Seton, Murphy, Russell, Ingle, sixth position.
14:35Stephen Richards, Kelly, Longhurst and Paul Radisic
14:38completes the top ten you saw there on the bottom of your screen.
14:41That is the fastest lap so far by Mark Scaife.
14:43So he is on a charge.
14:45Yeah, lap record here.
14:46Also held by his team-mate Craig Lowndes at 1.08.06.
14:51So Scaife is about nine-tenths of a second away from the lap record.
14:55Murphy's going good.
14:56Running really good.
14:58Yeah, they really have been making progress, this team.
15:00The cars have been terrible in qualifying the last season,
15:03but they're really starting to get some speed out of them on new tyres.
15:06Here's Stephen Johnson.
15:07All sorts of damage to the number 17 shell forward.
15:10Yeah, the Pitsy's switched it off.
15:15And I think...
15:15Yeah, you hear the guy say split a line.
15:20Yeah, split a line.
15:20That would be the hydraulic line to the power steering.
15:24Once you pump all that stuff out,
15:25the car is very, very difficult to drive.
15:27So Steve goes to the back of the good look at the replay.
15:30Let's have a look here.
15:30And there really wasn't room there for Todd to have a go there.
15:35It was...
15:36Well, I suppose you get enthusiastic,
15:38but it really...
15:39It wasn't...
15:40That was too ambitious.
15:42Now look at Lowndes.
15:43He's starting to close that gap, isn't he,
15:44to team-mate Mark Scaife, rather.
15:47Heading down the front straight here at Oran Park.
15:49Lowndes so much closer.
15:51A 1.09.48.
15:53That was a really slow one from Scaife, too.
15:54He dropped into the tens there.
15:55A 1.10, 1.2 for the race leader.
15:58And Lowndes is really closed down on the back
16:00with a number two car.
16:01When we were watching Qualified yesterday,
16:04Mark, you remember us saying out
16:05how hard Lowndes he was trying.
16:10Yeah, it was tremendous competition between these two.
16:13It has been the last few seasons.
16:15Craig Lowndes now.
16:17Garth Tander in third position.
16:21As they sweep off the bridge once down toward...
16:23the Essas once again,
16:25every round here critical.
16:27But Garth Tander, he...
16:29is quite clear this championship is not over
16:31by a long shot for the Valvoline Cummins driver.
16:33He's hungry for every points he can get.
16:35He's aware he's got two double-points races
16:37coming up in the Queensland 500
16:39and the FAI 1000 at Bathurst in November.
16:42And he said he's not going to stop fighting
16:44until that chequered flag falls
16:45in the last lap at Mount Panorama.
16:47Look at the position he's in now.
16:49The Valvoline Cummins car looking strong
16:50just in behind the Red Barons
16:52and keeping them well in touch.
16:55Well, interestingly,
16:56Seton at the moment is second in the championship
16:58on 798 points.
17:00He is just 42 ahead
17:02of Garth Tander
17:03and Craig Lowndes
17:04a further 42 points in the rear.
17:05So that's quite a crucial battle
17:07that's going on there at the moment.
17:08Here's Greg Murphy
17:09defending Russell Ingle
17:10who both of these guys
17:11did a sensational job
17:13in the second qualifying session yesterday.
17:15They had both struggled with set-up
17:16in their cars
17:17in the opening practice sessions.
17:18They came out
17:19in that bottom 50% of qualifying
17:22and marched up the order
17:23starting from positions 5 and 6.
17:25So something came good
17:26in that second qualifying session
17:27for both Murphy and Ingle.
17:29Yeah, you see the work
17:30that Ingle
17:31I was sitting down
17:31looking at him working on the computer
17:33and now you see the work
17:34that he did,
17:36you know,
17:36to try and get things sorted out
17:37because he was in a right old state
17:38to start with
17:39but that's a good technician,
17:41you know,
17:42a good driver
17:42that knows what he's on about
17:43because you could see
17:44the car progressively
17:46getting better
17:46and then it was
17:47like a shock to everybody
17:48when he went out
17:49and got up the size of the team.
17:51So Skape leads the way
17:52here at Oran Park
17:53from Tander
17:54who's in behind
17:56that man right there
17:57on your screen.
17:57Craig Lowndes
17:58in second place
17:59chasing teammate Mark Skape
18:01and the question is
18:02will he do anything about it?
18:03Well,
18:04the difficult thing is
18:05you imagine Jeff Gregg,
18:06what's he supposed to do?
18:07He's saying that
18:07come on boys,
18:08don't,
18:09you know,
18:09because they can quite easily
18:10take each other off
18:11which really wouldn't go down well.
18:14Exactly
18:14and Jeff,
18:15you know,
18:15what's he going to say?
18:16Take it easy boys,
18:17he's not going to do that,
18:18you know,
18:19I think he'll just leave it up
18:21to both the guys' common sense.
18:25So,
18:26Tander in third position
18:27a gap back to
18:29Glenn Seaton in fourth
18:31and there's the battle
18:33between Murphy and Engel.
18:35This is the fight for fifth
18:35and doesn't it make a difference
18:37when you get some qualifying speed
18:38out of your car?
18:39Murphy and Richards
18:40have both had good race speed
18:41this year
18:42but in these qualifying sprints
18:43if you don't get a good starting spot
18:45you are in all sorts of trouble.
18:47Now he's got a good qualifying setup
18:49on the car.
18:50Murphy was able to squeeze
18:51plenty of speed out of that yesterday
18:53and that's put him in a handy position
18:56now in front of Engel.
18:57We've had a couple of
19:00behind the scenes
19:00personnel changes there Mark
19:02at Kmart Racing
19:03a couple of new engineers
19:04coming on board
19:05so perhaps that's paying dividends
19:06for them
19:06they certainly have got
19:07some good pace
19:08as you say
19:09particularly on those
19:10one lap flyers
19:11in qualifying
19:11Murphy
19:12storming up the order yesterday
19:13just as he did at Winton
19:15he was in the bottom
19:1550% at Winton as well
19:17and he ended up starting
19:18from grid position 3
19:19down there
19:20and grid position 5
19:21here
19:22so the Kmart Commodores
19:23certainly making some inroads.
19:25The problem is you can't
19:26you know
19:26they've always had
19:27good race pace
19:28haven't they
19:28you can't afford
19:29with the competition
19:30the way it is now
19:31to give away
19:32three or four rows
19:33on the grid
19:34can you
19:34that's it
19:34oh look
19:35Longhurst had a wagon
19:36aside there
19:36currently sitting 9th
19:39Tony Longhurst
19:40it's the battle
19:40to stay inside
19:41the top 10
19:41Paul Radisic
19:43John Fortner
19:44just behind there
19:45Mark Larkham
19:45in the Mitre 10 car
19:46interesting thing
19:47this weekend
19:47a lot of the Ford teams
19:49particularly some of the
19:49lower funded teams
19:52have complained about
19:53just throwing every
19:54possible setup
19:55they could at these cars
19:55and not getting any change
19:57in terms of the car's feel
19:59or in terms of lap time
20:00so for some reason
20:01a lot of these
20:02AU Falcons
20:02are struggling
20:03at Iron Park
20:04this weekend
20:04having a word
20:06to Mark Larkham
20:06yesterday
20:07he mentioned
20:07that a lot of the
20:08data they had
20:09from last year's race
20:10he was absolutely
20:12no good to them
20:12because they're on
20:13the new Bridgestone
20:13control tyre here
20:14and he said
20:14the car is behaving
20:16so much differently
20:16on that tyre
20:17now Radisic
20:19it's funny
20:22as Mark says
20:22though
20:23every
20:23every
20:24Ford team
20:25he talks to
20:25says exactly
20:26the same thing
20:27that they can get
20:27a car
20:28right for say
20:29Oran Park
20:29and take it
20:30to Queensland Raceway
20:31or to Phillip Island
20:32and they virtually
20:33need to rebuild it
20:34to get it right
20:35that's been the biggest
20:36problem with this car
20:37hasn't it
20:37every now and again
20:38if you drop in
20:39on the right setup
20:40as Larkham proved
20:40at Bathurst last year
20:41the thing is
20:42an absolute bullet
20:43but it's just so rarely
20:44that anyone seems
20:45to drop in on
20:45a good combination
20:46it's a very very
20:47inconsistent car
20:48in terms of
20:50trying to dial it
20:51into the correct setup
20:52teams have been
20:52struggling with that
20:53for 18 months
20:53but this new
20:55initiative by Tiga
20:56they're calling
20:57Project Blueprint
20:58where they're going
20:58to try and standardise
20:59things like aerodynamics
21:00and brakes
21:01and shock absorbers
21:02and things like that
21:03maybe we'll finally
21:04get to that equality
21:05between Ford and Holden
21:06that we've been looking
21:07for for so long
21:08this is on board
21:08look at the back end
21:10of Longhurst
21:11it's very bumpy
21:12up there
21:12really
21:13I can't believe
21:13they're bumpy
21:14it's up there
21:14must be so hard
21:16for both of these
21:17they're Queensland based
21:18and as you mentioned
21:19they do a lot of their
21:19testing at Queensland
21:20Raceway
21:21which is billiard table
21:22smooth
21:23and it's so much
21:23different here
21:24at Oran Park Raceway
21:26in the lead up
21:28to this round
21:28there was a successful
21:29test for
21:30the Shell Helix
21:31Racing Team
21:32both Radisic
21:33and Steven Johnson
21:33were quietly confident
21:35heading into this round
21:36they reckon
21:36they were able
21:37to pull time
21:37similar to that
21:38set by the Holden
21:40Racing Team
21:41when they grabbed
21:41pole position
21:42for the Queensland
21:43Round
21:43but it hasn't
21:44translated thus far
21:45into anything exciting
21:46for DJR
21:47so Paul Radisic
21:50continues to attack
21:51this is further up
21:51in the field
21:52Greg Murphy
21:53coming under
21:53increasing pressure
21:54from the enforcer
21:55Russell Engel
21:56the battle
21:57continuing for Fem
21:58Mark Scaife
21:59Craig Lowndes
22:00Garth Tander
22:00and Glenn Seaton
22:01up ahead of them
22:01well right now
22:06we're midway
22:07through race one
22:08three races here
22:09today at Oran Park
22:10Scaife showing the way
22:11the Red Barons
22:40out in front again
22:41it's been a successful
22:42hunting ground
22:43for the Oran Park
22:44in recent years
22:45and when they come here
22:46they've always got
22:47a good base package
22:48to start with
22:48and look at them
22:49again doing a marvellous
22:51job out in front
22:52Lowndes in second
22:53Tander in third
22:53Glenn Seaton in fourth
22:55and Greg Murphy
22:55and Russell Engel
22:56having a great dice
22:57for fifth
22:57you've got to say
22:58that Tander's
22:59the only one
22:59on a regular basis
23:00that could serve it
23:01up to the HRT
23:02or can get anywhere
23:03nearer
23:03yeah he's only got
23:04a sniff of their lead
23:05hasn't he
23:05might as well
23:06not hold the Oran Park
23:07round
23:07because you know
23:08what the result's
23:09going to be
23:09certainly been that way
23:11the last five years
23:12the Holton Racing team
23:13have been on pole position
23:14the last five years
23:15and certainly looking
23:16at the speed here
23:17if the reverse grid
23:19or the reversing
23:19of the top six
23:20in race two
23:21doesn't upset them
23:21too much
23:22looking very much
23:23like another
23:24one two to the
23:25factory Holton team
23:26so you reckon
23:27you wouldn't have
23:27gotten good odds
23:28on HRT
23:28this weekend
23:29here
23:29no
23:30I reckon
23:30they get worse
23:31than that
23:31is it possible
23:32to get worse
23:32than evens
23:33I think even
23:34Billy Woods
23:35could have won
23:35some money
23:35further back
23:38in the pack
23:39Stephen Richards
23:40now
23:40starting to close
23:41in on the back
23:41of Engel
23:42he's stuck in
23:44this Kmart sandwich
23:45there's Murphy
23:46he's opened up
23:47a little bit of a gap
23:48on the Castrol Commodore
23:49Tony Longhurst
23:52continues
23:53currently eighth
23:54in the championship
23:55the 43 year old
23:56Queenslander
23:57Lincolnson
23:58consistent performance
24:00Celtics heavily
24:02forward
24:02Todd Kelly
24:04had a great
24:05qualifying session
24:06his best qualifying
24:07performance so far
24:08in the
24:09Holton Young Lions
24:10machine
24:11so he's getting
24:12better and better
24:14as the year progresses
24:14great to see
24:15word from the
24:16Pitsmark is that
24:17the stewards
24:18are likely to look
24:19at that incident
24:19between Kelly
24:20and Jason Barguana
24:21which took
24:22Bargs out
24:23early in the
24:24piece in this race
24:26so Kelly
24:27well he's doing
24:28a good job
24:29on the circuit
24:29but he might be
24:30getting a quick
24:31march to the stewards
24:32after this one
24:32there's Russell
24:33Larry Perkins
24:34I should say
24:34in the second
24:34of the Castrol Commodores
24:35battling away
24:36with Rodney Forbes
24:37for 16th position
24:39Larry got pinged
24:40for noise
24:41or excessive noise
24:42yesterday
24:43by the EPA
24:44who set up
24:46monitoring devices
24:47at all races
24:48around Australia
24:49Larry was pinged
24:50at one decibel
24:51over the
24:5195 DBA limit
24:53so you can see
24:55he went to all
24:55sorts of trouble
24:56to try and
24:56put baffles
24:57and all sorts of
24:58sound deflectors
24:59to stop on the
24:59exhaust to try
25:00and get it back
25:00under the limit
25:01they've got to be
25:03very very careful
25:04about that
25:04plenty of drivers
25:05have been pinged
25:06in the past
25:06for excessive noise
25:07there's Bargs
25:09on the recovery road
25:10we saw all the
25:10tail there
25:11of that group
25:12including Neil Crompton
25:14Brad Jones
25:15Larry Perkins
25:16Rodney Forbes
25:17Craig Baird's in there
25:18as well
25:18who recently
25:19celebrated his
25:2030th birthday
25:21last weekend
25:22Craig Baird
25:23now residing
25:23on the Gold Coast
25:24the Kiwi
25:24here's Brad Jones
25:25our Carleton United
25:26on board
25:27showing you the way
25:28Rodney Forbes
25:29in the Winds
25:29Commodore
25:30just in front
25:30of him
25:31well they made
25:32some changes
25:33to this car
25:34this morning
25:34and the warm up
25:35Brad said
25:35he was much
25:36happy
25:36look at this
25:37on the inside
25:37Rodney Forbes
25:39got a beautiful
25:39run out of that
25:40corner
25:40so good
25:41in fact
25:42he carries
25:42that speed
25:43shot out there
25:43like a bullet
25:44and now
25:45he carries
25:45a bit of speed
25:46down the lane
25:47straight
25:47look at this
25:48Crompton
25:48this is going
25:48to be exciting
25:49Crompton
25:50just has a step
25:50up the inside
25:51too
25:51gets in racing
25:52room
25:52oh so close
25:53as they come
25:53down
25:54oh
25:55damn me
25:56Baird
25:58just got
25:58right into
25:59the side
25:59did he get
26:01Barb Wilder
26:02did he
26:02when Baird
26:03went back
26:03across the
26:04circuit
26:04looked ever
26:05so ever
26:05so close
26:06I think
26:07Baird's
26:07actually got
26:08through on
26:08him
26:08Baz
26:09so I think
26:11Baird's
26:11oh
26:12there's around
26:13we go
26:14locked up
26:14his back
26:14brakes again
26:15I wonder
26:15if that was
26:16might have
26:17had some
26:17dirt or
26:17something
26:17on his
26:18rear tyres
26:18that car
26:20as soon as
26:20he got on
26:21the brakes
26:21the back end
26:23came around
26:23Rodney Forbes
26:25taken a number
26:27of drives
26:27through the
26:27countryside
26:28already
26:28in race
26:29one
26:30and we
26:31understand
26:31at the
26:32moment
26:32only a
26:33handful of
26:34laps left
26:34to go
26:35in this
26:35one
26:35but as
26:35it stands
26:36with three
26:37to go
26:38Russell
26:38Ingle
26:39will be on
26:40pole
26:40for our
26:40reverse grid
26:41race
26:42he's in
26:42sixth position
26:43at the
26:43moment
26:43if things
26:43don't
26:44change
26:44Rusty
26:45will have
26:46pole
26:46for race
26:46two
26:47just a reminder
26:47if you're
26:48watching at
26:48home
26:48after this
26:49Baz
26:49oh look at
26:50this
26:50right
26:51yes
26:51that's
26:51spared up
26:52the inside
26:52wow
26:5340 really
26:55closed the
26:56door there
26:56I mean
26:57there was
26:57no toys
26:58about that
26:58was there
26:58really
26:59and just
27:00have a look
27:00here on
27:01the inside
27:01yeah
27:05closed door
27:08now here
27:09I was
27:09worried
27:09no
27:09it wasn't
27:10a bit
27:11of a bang
27:12now
27:13Bargwana
27:14continues to
27:15charge through
27:15the field
27:16after getting
27:16turned around
27:18on lap two
27:19he's up to
27:1919th position
27:20so he's a
27:21real charger
27:22this guy
27:22he's made
27:24some great
27:25progress
27:25of course
27:26your progress
27:26gets tougher
27:27as you get
27:27closer towards
27:28the front of
27:28the field
27:29just a reminder

28:08the gear stick
28:09you can see his
28:10feet dancing on
28:11the pedals
28:11that is the best

28:14I reckon
28:14it really is
28:15good
28:15watch as he comes
28:17through the corners
28:17you can see how
28:18much steering lock
28:19he puts in
28:19you can see his
28:21feet on the
28:22pedals there too
28:23they change without
28:25even touching the
28:26clutch pedal
28:26only use it on the
28:28down change but
28:29they change up
28:30no clutch pedal
28:30whatsoever
28:31that incident with
28:32Todd Kelly which
28:33happened right here
28:34on the circuit
28:34has only served to
28:35fire Bargwana's
28:36up I think because
28:36he's driving at 11
28:37tenths isn't he
28:38he really is
28:39he's up behind
28:39Neil Crompton now
28:41he takes Crompton
28:42that'll be 18th
28:43so continuing a
28:45steady march through
28:45the field if he
28:46starts from 18th
28:48or somewhere
28:48thereabouts
28:49for race 2
28:50and just to
28:51fight his way
28:52back through the
28:52field
28:52should be another
28:53good day for
28:54Bargwana
28:54what a rotten
28:55start to the
28:55weekend though
28:56great shots here
28:58right up behind
28:59the FTR Falcon
28:59another replay
29:00bounce
29:00now I reckon you're
29:03right I reckon
29:04just the dirt on the
29:06rear end of it
29:07rear tyres and
29:09because I mean
29:09he's just the second
29:10he got on the
29:11brakes and locked
29:11it up
29:12well we're on our
29:12way home in this
29:13one
29:13Scaife and Loud
29:15showing the way at
29:16the moment
29:16our Shell Series
29:19Championship points
29:20lead up ahead of
29:22the defending
29:22champion
29:23there's Garth
29:23Tander who sits
29:24in third
29:24from Glenn Seton
29:26in fourth position
29:27but a start to
29:29finish victory
29:30coming up
29:30for Mark Scaife
29:32another dominant
29:35performance from
29:36Holt Racing
29:36they're just so
29:37strong aren't
29:37they
29:37extra strong
29:40minutes
29:40they're so well
29:42prepared these
29:43cars
29:43they came here
29:45or they come
29:45here every year
29:46Paul Wheel in
29:46trouble in the
29:47K&J Radiators
29:48Falcon
29:49but HRC have
29:50certainly got a
29:51good base package
29:52to start with
29:52and all they do
29:53is fine tune it
29:53and Scaife who's
29:55brilliant behind the
29:55wheel gets out there
29:56and does what he
29:57does best
29:57he will take out
29:58race one at
29:59Oren Park
29:59in convincing
30:00fashion over
30:01team mate
30:02Craig Lowndes
30:03and third is
30:04Garth Tander
30:05is Seton getting
30:06home in fourth
30:07position
30:07now the battle
30:08for Pohl
30:08if you like
30:09for race two
30:11Murphy gets across
30:12the line in fifth
30:13he'll be on the
30:13front row for race
30:14two
30:15but Indor
30:15will have Pohl
30:17for our race two
30:19reverse grid
30:20that should be
30:21should be really
30:22interesting
30:23because
30:23if you look at
30:25Murphy
30:26Murphy was going
30:27really good
30:27in that
30:28I'm kind of a
30:30fan of the
30:31reverse grid
30:31thing
30:32okay
30:32it may
30:32in some
30:33cases
30:34do
30:34some drivers
30:35no favours
30:37at all
30:38and then in the
30:38next race
30:39it's like
30:40lapsed people
30:41you lap someone
30:41one time
30:42they'll muck up
30:43your day
30:43for you
30:43another time
30:44they'll make
30:44your day
30:45so I think
30:46it's going to be
30:48incredibly exciting
30:49just a reminder
30:50on that
30:50folks
30:50they're reversing
30:51the top six
30:52grid positions
30:52for race two
30:54so they will
30:55start
30:55the top six
30:56finishes
30:57in that first
30:58race that we've
30:59just seen
30:59will be reversed
31:00around
31:00for the start
31:01of race two
31:02so that should
31:02create some real
31:03excitement
31:03rustling will be
31:05on pole
31:06and then the grid
31:06for race three
31:07is the aggregate
31:08so they get
31:09points for the first
31:10race
31:10points for the
31:11second race
31:11and it's the
31:12aggregates
31:13you know
31:14it's the one
31:14where the highest
31:15points goes
31:15as pole position
31:17down to six
31:18and then the
31:18seventh position
31:19is the seventh
31:20guy on the road
31:20well the massive
31:21crowd congratulate
31:22Mark Scaife
31:23who takes victory
31:24in the opener
31:25Craig Lowrance
31:26finishing in second
31:2710 to third
31:27that's a good
31:28performance
31:28Seton the best
31:29of the four brigade
31:30from Murphy
31:31and our pole sitter
31:32for race two
31:33Russell Ingle
31:34for the reverse grid
31:34Stephen Richards
31:35and Todd Kelly
31:36completing the top eight
31:37Longhurst, Radisic,
31:38Faulkner and Larkham
31:39and John Bauer
31:40in 13
31:41bit further back
31:45Brad Jones there
31:46and Neil Crompton
31:47they had a great
31:48battle all the way
31:48to the line
31:48didn't they
31:49and Bar Gwana
31:50forcing his way
31:51after that earlier
31:52contact up to 19
31:53what career path
31:55would you have chosen
31:56if you weren't a racer
31:57oh look I reckon
31:59I would have been
32:00a pilot
32:00that's not the
32:01slightest doubt
32:01a pilot
32:02or a helicopter pilot
32:03or a gung-ho
32:04F-18 pilot
32:05career path
32:07if I wasn't a racer
32:08well I guess
32:08I would have had
32:09to be a sportsman
32:09of some sort
32:10because I'm
32:11probably too lazy
32:11for a real job
32:12I think I would have
32:15dedicated more
32:15to basketball
32:16I'm 6'6
32:17they call me
32:17Big Bird
32:18so maybe they
32:18would have called
32:19me Larry Bird
32:20if I put more time
32:20to it
32:21who knows
32:21if I wasn't a racer
32:24I would do
32:25anything I can
32:26which I don't have to do
32:26too much
32:27and earns me
32:27a heap of money
32:28like a
32:29Channel 10
32:30commentator
32:30I think
32:31I don't have to do
