00:00This afternoon, we've got our first race from Goodwood in about half an hour's time, but now it's motor racing and the penultimate meeting in this year's Autotrader RAC British Touring Car Championship.
00:11Germany's Frank Bieler secured the driver's title at Thruxton two weeks ago.
00:16Now at Donington, Audi were looking to add the team and the manufacturer's titles in this, their first season in the British Championship.
00:23The action at Donington then, commentary coming from Murray Walker.
00:26Second place for Frank Bieler in the silver Audi at Thruxton, but the 12 points were enough to make the likeable German the 1996 Autotrader British Touring Car Champion in his first year in the series.
00:42A brilliant achievement for Frank, for his happy team and for the unique four-wheel drive Audi A4, despite the fact that it had been made to carry a hefty weight penalty.
00:52So, a stunning performance by Bieler, who's now won the German, French and British Championships, as well as last year's prestigious World Cup.
01:02Here at Donington, Bieler's challenge is to win as many points as possible to make it a full house for Audi, the Drivers, Manufacturers and Teams Awards.
01:13Audi lead the Manufacturers' Contest by 36 points, so they could get the job done today.
01:19But the pit lane buzz amongst the drivers and teams is what'll happen to Honda next year, with the news that its management may change.
01:29The Honda Accord's been getting better and better, and now it's a winner in the experienced hands of Scotsman David Leslie.
01:36First at Silverstone, first at Thruxton, and a real threat here at Donington.
01:40But here's Sweden's Rikard Rydell in his mighty Volvo 850.
01:49Pole position for race one, and now he's going for the race two pole as well.
01:54There's an extra point if he gets it, and Rikard needs everyone he can get for second place in the championship.
02:01And yes, look at Leslie's face, he can't believe it.
02:04Rydell's done it. Pole position by three one-hundredths of a second.
02:08In the first session, I had the three and a half tenth gap to the second place man, and I didn't think I would have that in the second session.
02:15We didn't improve the car a lot, but it was still as good as it was in the first session, but it was only a couple of hundredths down to Leslie's.
02:21I think the others improved quite a bit for the second session, and it was even closer.
02:25So I'm very happy to be in pole for both sessions.
02:29Race one, Rydell heads the grid for Volvo, with the very rapid Will Hoy alongside him in his Renault Laguna, hoping for better luck here than he's had for a lot of this year.
02:39So, Row 1, Volvo and Renault. Row 2, Renault and Volvo, Menuh and Burt.
02:45David Leslie fifth, Roberto Revalha's BMW sixth, Row 4, James K, Honda, James Thompson Vauxhall.
02:53Two BMWs next, Joe Winklehock and Peter Cox.
02:57Clelland's Vauxhall with Beeler's Audi down at 12th, ahead of Ailes' Nissan and Big Cliff's Audi, followed by the two Peugeots of Watts and Harvey.
03:07Watch for the lights. Red. Green. Go.
03:20Rydell leads in the Volvo from pole position. Kelvin Mert has passed Hoy up into second place. Hoy is third.
03:27Going round Redgate. David Leslie in the Honda. Fourth position and off. Off, it's Winklehock.
03:32He's hit by James Thompson's Vauxhall. Right down to last, only just ahead of the safety car.
03:40Now, there's Craner curves. Rydell leads. Bert is second. Volvo first and second.
03:45Hoy is third. Leslie's fourth. There he is, number 11.
03:48Two is Menuh down to fifth. We're with Menuh now. That's Leslie alongside us.
03:53120 miles an hour. Up to McLean's. And Menuh goes through.
03:59Menuh upper place. Over the kerb.
04:03Leslie's attacking.
04:05We're with Roberto Revaldi now. Sixth position. That's Leslie on the right.
04:11Menuh on the left. Leslie goes through to fourth place ahead of the Renault Laguna.
04:15Down Starkey Street. This is 140 miles an hour. Up to the S's.
04:19Hard on the brakes. Left. Right. Volvo. Volvo. Renault. Honda. Renault. BMW is the order.
04:29Now we're with Harvey. Across the gas. Over the kerb. Chasing Paul Redis. Itches Ford Mondeo.
04:35That's in the head. Down to Melbourne. The hairpin.
04:41Two Volvos still up front. One of the Vauxhalls with its lights blazing.
04:47James Thompson, of course, fighting his way through the field.
04:52Goddard. There's Kelvin Burke. Second place.
04:55Hoy behind him in third position. Down to Redgate.
04:59They'll be coming towards us. And there they are.
05:02In line astern. The two Volvos. Followed by the Renault.
05:06Then it's David Leslie's Honda. Fourth position. We're with Steve Robertson.
05:10Look ahead. The yellow car is Thompson. Recovering from that collision with Winklehock.
05:15He passes Tim Harvey. Tim Harvey in the red Peugeot.
05:19He's going for it. And he goes through on the inside of the Kraner Curve.
05:22Now they're doing 130 miles an hour as they drop down towards the old hairpin here.
05:27Tim Harvey locks up in the Peugeot.
05:32Stays ahead of Thompson, number seven, in the Vauxhall Vectra.
05:36Climbing up towards McLeath. Now here's a replay of the start.
05:39We're with Thompson. Revalier on the left.
05:42David Leslie ahead. Sprints through. Passes menu.
05:46Superb pass, that is.
05:47Now, up to the right-hander at Redgate.
05:51With Thompson. And there is Winklehock.
05:53And bang, they meet. Winklehock was trying the impossible.
05:57And this is the S's.
06:00Kelvin Burke, second.
06:02Will Hoy, third.
06:03David Leslie, number 11, in fourth position.
06:05Behind him is Alamenu.
06:07There's the yellow and blue Renault.
06:10Rydell is up front on his own.
06:12He's taking advantage of the fact that his team-mate, Kelvin Burke,
06:15in the second Volvo, is in second place.
06:18Now we're with Leslie.
06:19That's Hoy ahead, and we're passing him.
06:22David Leslie passes Will Hoy up into third place.
06:26There's the Volvo ahead of Kelvin Burke.
06:29And ahead of him is Rick Arright.
06:30Ellen Hoy regates the place.
06:33Terrific.
06:34Will Hoy down to Redgate.
06:36Back into third position.
06:38Great scrap this is.
06:40Here they are.
06:41Redgate, Hoy, number four.
06:43David Leslie, and behind him is Alamenu.
06:47So the two Renaults are sandwiching Leslie.
06:49We're back again with Robertson.
06:52Thompson ahead.
06:53Goes past Tim Harvey again.
06:57Into the crane of curves again.
07:00Now, who's going to give way?
07:02Somebody's got to give way.
07:05Neither of them do.
07:06There's contact there at 130 miles an hour.
07:09But Tim Harvey locks up, breaks a bit.
07:12Ahead of him goes the Vauxhall.
07:14Thompson has gained a place.
07:16Climbing to McLean's.
07:20This is the climb.
07:21Turn into the right-hander.
07:23Then still climbing up towards Coppins.
07:26Peugeot ahead.
07:28And into the pits yet again.
07:30It seems to be a regular feature.
07:33Paul Radisic.
07:34Now, that rear trim is stuck on, so it should be pretty easy to pull off.
07:39And indeed it is.
07:42And at the S's, Rydell is pulling away.
07:45Two seconds ahead now.
07:46This is a terrific scrap for second place.
07:48Kelvin Burke.
07:49Will Hoy.
07:50David Leslie.
07:50There he is.
07:52Down to Melbourne again.
07:54This is the hairpin.
07:56Revalia, number 21, is in sixth position.
07:59We're with him now.
08:00Alamenu ahead.
08:02This is Roberto Revalia, the touring car's only world champion.
08:09Comes from Italy.
08:11From Venice.
08:12Into Goddard.
08:14Chasing Alamenu's Renault Laguna.
08:17Down to Redgate.
08:19Completing a lap into a new one.
08:23Now, this is the old, old problem.
08:26You can get close to the car in front,
08:28but it's very, very difficult to get past.
08:31Their performance is so equal.
08:34They've got the same sort of horsepower.
08:36They grip the road as well.
08:37The drivers are as good as each other.
08:39And you've got to force the man in front to make a mistake,
08:42and they don't make many of those.
08:46Leslie goes up onto the curb.
08:48Climbing up now.
08:49Underneath Starkey's Bridge.
08:51Back again towards McLean's.
08:52Wilhoi ahead.
08:56On go the brake lights.
08:58Out of McLean's they come.
09:01Up to Coppice.
09:03100 miles an hour, this is.
09:06Out of the right-hander.
09:08Now, we're with...
09:09Oh!
09:10This is Revalia,
09:11and it sounds like the Death Watch Beetle
09:13have got at Roberto's BMW.
09:15Listen.
09:17That sounds terminal to me.
09:19Down to the S's.
09:20Yes!
09:23Rattle, rattle, rattle.
09:24Left, right.
09:25And Revalia's surely going to have to stop and retire.
09:30There goes Frank Bieler.
09:32And at Melbourne, yes, out goes Revalia.
09:35And this battle for second place is continuing.
09:38Kelvin Bird still there.
09:39Behind him, Hoy.
09:40Behind him, Leslie.
09:42Behind him, Alan.
09:43Menu up to Goddard.
09:45There's the Volvo.
09:48Wilhoi has a look.
09:53Has the door shut in his face.
09:55It's down to Redgate again.
09:58And this is Bidcliffe.
09:59John Bidcliffe in the Audi.
10:00He's with John Cleland.
10:02We're with Cleland's Vauxhall Vectra now.
10:04John Cleland, the 1995 British Touring Car Champion.
10:10Last year in the Cavalier, this year in the Vectra.
10:12Ahead of him, new boy, John Bidcliffe.
10:14He's made a great impression on the Touring Car Series.
10:17And John Cleland is going for him.
10:18Nudge, nudge.
10:19Push, push, in fact.
10:21He almost has Bidcliffe off.
10:23Bidcliffe holds his line.
10:24Now, these are two very hard men.
10:28And Cleland goes ahead.
10:30Bidcliffe dodges and dives and weaves and ducks.
10:33But John Cleland's got the experience.
10:34He stays ahead.
10:35He's up into eighth position.
10:37Down to ninth goes John Bidcliffe.
10:39And out of the race altogether.
10:43He was in sixth place.
10:44Roberto Revalia.
10:46It's another long trip to Britain and another long trip back to Venice.
10:51He's out of this race.
10:53They've got to get the car ready for the next one now.
10:55And in comes his team-mate, Peter Cox.
10:59This is not a good race for BMW.
11:02Winklehock collision at the beginning.
11:04The first two or three laps was OK.
11:05And then there was coming a very strange noise.
11:09And they had to stop because the noise was very strong.
11:12Very disappointing.
11:13Motor racing.
11:14Yes, that's motor racing.
11:17A philosophical Roberto Revalia.
11:20Out goes Peter Cox to rejoin the race.
11:22Now he's down to last.
11:26And at Melbourne, Ricard Rydell is still ahead.
11:28Here's the battle for second.
11:30No change.
11:31Kelvin Burt.
11:33Will Hoy.
11:36We're with David Leslie.
11:37Fourth position.
11:39Climbing up to Goddard to complete this lap and start another one.
11:43And Hoy lunges to the left.
11:45Oh, he's hit Kelvin Burt.
11:47Through goes Leslie.
11:48Through goes Alameniuk to second and third.
11:51And poor Kelvin Burt is stranded.
11:54Well, that most definitely was not his fault.
11:57He was just turning in.
11:58Will Hoy hits him at the back.
12:00Spins him out.
12:01And he's suffered because Hoy's gone on.
12:05Kelvin Burt rejoins.
12:07Rear trim trailing.
12:10Well, should he go the other way of the course?
12:13Well, anyway, he's done it.
12:15Rejoins.
12:15Now, here's a replay.
12:16Let's see what happens.
12:18See, Kelvin Burt turning in.
12:20Gets hit right at the back by Will Hoy.
12:24Through goes David Leslie.
12:25Through goes Alameniuk.
12:28Back again.
12:28Now, this is a replay from Burt's point of view.
12:31The back of the car swings round.
12:33And he is very much out of the race.
12:36And so, and so will James Thompson be surely soon.
12:40Smoke pouring from the right rear.
12:42The rear tyre must be rubbing up against the wheel arch.
12:46Now we're with Tim Harvey.
12:48That's Winklehock ahead.
12:51And Gary Ailes ahead of him.
12:52Gary Ailes going jolly well in the Nissan Primera.
12:56It hasn't gone all that well this year.
12:57But they're getting it together here at Donington.
12:59And Ailes leads Winklehock.
13:01Thompson is being caught.
13:03He's going to be taken very shortly as they come out of Coppice.
13:06Down the Starkies straight.
13:08Yes, pass goes Ailes.
13:10Pass goes Winklehock.
13:11Now Winklehock pass with Tim Harvey.
13:15Down to the S's.
13:17Winklehock attacking Ailes.
13:19And he goes through.
13:21Joe Winklehock moves up into eighth position.
13:24He's gained 14 places, Winklehock.
13:28The TWR Volvo men are happy.
13:30And they should well be.
13:32John Gentry, the designer.
13:34And here, with three laps to go, is Ricard Rydell.
13:39Leading in the Volvo 850.
13:42Five cylinders, two litres, 300 horsepower.
13:46Front wheel drive.
13:47It's good for 150 miles an hour.
13:50Not here at Donington, with the gearing that it has for this track.
13:54But it will do it.
13:55And there's a new lap record for Rydell.
13:57That's 92.5 miles an hour average.
14:02Glum faces in the Vauxhall pit.
14:04James Thompson out.
14:06That's after that collision with Winklehock on the first lap at Redgate.
14:11Damage to the right rear.
14:13Damage to the right front as well.
14:15Well, Thompson walks away.
14:19They've got to get the car ready for the second race.
14:21Now, here's what happened.
14:23John Binkliff attacking Thompson, who turns in.
14:27They collide.
14:29Obviously not too happy about that.
14:31Oh.
14:32Supposed to stay on the tarmac, I suppose.
14:33Anyway, it's not my job to say, I'm sure, talk to the course and have something to say about it.
14:41We'll see.
14:43Hey, look at this.
14:45Winklehock in the white BMW has caught Big Cliff.
14:47Big Cliff is in seventh position.
14:49Joe Winklehock, the 1993 champion, is going for that place.
14:54He's come all the way up from 22nd to 8th.
14:57And is he going to be seventh?
14:58Yes, indeed he is.
14:59Rainer curves.
15:00He dives through on the inside.
15:02Takes Big Cliff's Audi.
15:04Moves up into seventh position.
15:08Joe Winklehock has really got the bit between his teeth.
15:11Now, we're with Big Cliff.
15:13There is Winklehock ahead.
15:14As you can see, there are a few drops of rain coming down.
15:18Big Cliff's got the wipers going.
15:19Up to McLean.
15:22Winklehock is pulling away from him now.
15:24No doubt about it.
15:25Up to Coppice.
15:27Here is Coppice.
15:28Winklehock 7th, Big Cliff 8th.
15:30They're on their own.
15:32There'll be no more changes there.
15:35Down Stark is straight.
15:37And number 20, Cox.
15:38There he is.
15:39He's in amongst the privateers.
15:41He's catching Lee Brooks, who's 15th in the Toyota.
15:45He's past him.
15:46Now he's catching Matthew Neal in the Ford Mondale.
15:51And it's down to the S's.
15:53But on the last lap at the Melbourne hairpin,
15:56Ricard Rydell leads in the Volvo.
15:58He's only got the climb up to Goddard.
16:01Turn left at the hairpin.
16:03He will see the chequered flag.
16:05Here he is at Goddard.
16:07Turn in.
16:08It's going to be a great victory.
16:09He's been in command all the way.
16:12Ricard Rydell wins his fourth race this season.
16:16Volvo's fifth race this season.
16:1815 points.
16:19The mechanics are delighted.
16:21And so they should be.
16:22A lights-to-flag win for Ricard Rydell and Volvo,
16:26seven seconds ahead of David Leslie's Honda,
16:28with four different manufacturers in the top four places.
16:32Bad news for Menuh, though.
16:33He's seen the championship gap between himself and Rydell shrink to seven points.
16:41It's looking wet for race two,
16:43so out come the rain tyres, just in case they're needed.
16:48But happily, they're not going to be.
16:51All ready to go, then.
16:53Rydell, Volvo 850 in pole position again,
16:57ahead of Leslie's Honda this time.
16:59Row two, Renault and BMW, Menuh and Revalia.
17:02Audi and Renault, Frank Beeler and Will Hoy.
17:06Row four, Thomson's Vauxhall, Ailes' Nissan.
17:09Kay's Honda next, with Cox's BMW.
17:12Then Weaklhock's BMW, Clelland's Vauxhall.
17:15Row seven, Bird's Volvo, Watts' Peugeot.
17:1818 laps, 45 miles, and it's go.
17:27Leslie is out dragging Rydell.
17:29Leslie on the right.
17:31David Leslie in the Honda, takes the lead at Redgate.
17:35Rydell second place,
17:36Beeler up into third position from fifth.
17:38Menuh is fourth, we're with him now.
17:41That's Rydell ahead of Beeler, coming up on the left.
17:43Is he going to pass?
17:44Menuh keeps his foot hard in it,
17:49through the Crane of Curves,
17:50and no, Beeler stays behind the Renault.
17:54Beeler fourth, Menuh is in third position,
17:56through the Crane of Curves,
17:58underneath Starkey's Bridge.
18:00Leslie leads, coming towards us, there's the Honda.
18:04Rydell second, Menuh is third in the Renault,
18:06Beeler is fourth in the Audi.
18:08Hoy is fifth in the second Renault,
18:10into McLean's.
18:11Climb up to Coppice, lap one out of 18.
18:15Leslie, Volvo, Renault, Audi, Renault, BMW.
18:21Down Starkey's straight, up to the S's.
18:26Here they come.
18:29Turn in.
18:31It's brake hard here.
18:34Streaming through, very close indeed.
18:36Cleland's in the markup.
18:40Ailes is going off.
18:41Ailes in the Nissan.
18:43But he's regained, he's lost places.
18:45Down at Melbourne, it's Honda, Volvo, Renault, Audi.
18:48Leslie leads, Rydell is second,
18:50climbing up towards Goddard.
18:52Menuh is third.
18:54Here they come.
18:54This is Goddard, the hairpin.
18:56Very close on the first lap.
19:02Here's Tim Harvey, number five in the Peugeot,
19:05and he takes some trim off the front of the car.
19:08Out of Goddard.
19:09Bird, number eight, is well down the field in the Volvo 850.
19:16And here they come, that red gate.
19:20The Peugeot's.
19:21Number 12 is James Kaye in the second Honda Accord.
19:24Oh, David Leslie's team mate.
19:26Big car with Robertson.
19:27He's hit Gary Ailes.
19:29Contact there with the Nissan Primera.
19:31Ailes recovers, pulls away through the crater curves.
19:35Up to 130 miles an hour.
19:37Thompson versus Winkleholt.
19:39James Thompson and the Vauxhall Vectra.
19:42And out of Starkies they come.
19:44Now, up into McLean.
19:45You can see the first three.
19:46Leslie, Rydell, and Menuh.
19:48Then a little gap to Bela.
19:50Behind Bela is Will Hoy.
19:52This is the highest part of the course.
19:54Coppice, which leads into the fastest part of the course.
19:58Out of Coppice, down the Starkies Street.
20:01Past the exhibition buildings, into the Esses.
20:04Fourth place, the silver Audi of Frank Bela.
20:07Ahead of him is the battle for the championship's second place points.
20:11And Hoy tries for Bela and doesn't succeed.
20:14Bela shuts the door.
20:15Revalia, number 21, is in sixth place in the BMW.
20:18And Leslie is looking good.
20:22Rydell is on 12 points.
20:24He's ahead of Alan Menuh, who turns in for the right-hander, the hairpin at Melbourne.
20:30And Rydell is pulling off.
20:32Ricard Rydell, second place in the Volvo, he's pulling off.
20:35He jerks to the left, into the pit lane.
20:38He's out of the race.
20:39No points for Ricard Rydell.
20:41Now, that's taken some of the pressure off David Leslie.
20:44Menuh is up into second place at 12 points.
20:47And the battle there is between Ailes and Kelvin Burt.
20:51Kelvin Burt in the Volvo.
20:52We're with him.
20:54Contact hits Ailes onto the grasp.
20:57What a day it is for Kelvin Burt.
21:00So, down to Regan.
21:03Burt, problems in the first race.
21:05Problems in the second race.
21:06He's got Gary Ailes' Nissan Primera ahead of him.
21:11And here are the privateers.
21:13Richard Kaye, Lee Brooks, Matthew Neal.
21:17And they're in the Vauxhall, the Toyota, the Mondeo.
21:20And Matthew Neal is going past.
21:23Brooks, he's done so.
21:24But Kaye is leading the privateers contest at the moment in the Vauxhall Cavalier.
21:31Neal's got ahead of Brooks.
21:33He won the first race for the privateers, Matthew Neal.
21:36And Rydell is in the pits.
21:39In fact, he's in the pits and he's out of the race.
21:41Big disappointment.
21:43He's lost 12 certain points there.
21:45And that's very much to Alan Menuh's advantage.
21:49The S is.
21:50Bela is third.
21:51Audi.
21:52Number four.
21:53Will Hoy is fourth.
21:54Behind him, the BMW of Roberto Revalia.
21:57Then it's Winklehock.
21:58Two BMWs together.
22:00Fastest lap.
22:00Joe Winklehock is quickest.
22:02There's Revalia, his team-mate.
22:06That's Winklehock behind him.
22:09Now, can Alan Menuh catch David Leslie?
22:12I very much doubt it.
22:13Bela comes out with Will Hoy.
22:20Out of Goddard.
22:21Past the pit straight.
22:23Ailes has caught Harvey.
22:25Number five.
22:25Tim Harvey's been caught by Linysa Primera.
22:28There's contact.
22:29And look at Harvey's windscreen.
22:31There's something on it.
22:32He can hardly see out of it.
22:33That's Paul Radice each ahead.
22:35And there is Ailes on the left.
22:36Gary Ailes is coming past.
22:38So, Harvey on the left.
22:40Ailes in the blue car.
22:41Kelvin Bird sails past.
22:43Ailes.
22:44Right up behind Tim Harvey.
22:46Off onto the grass.
22:47We're with him.
22:49Oh, he's lost those two places and a lot of time.
22:53But he did well to keep going.
22:56Traitor curves.
22:591992 champion Tim Harvey, number five.
23:02Racing against ex-Formula 3 driver Gary Ailes.
23:06And privateer Matthew Neal is out in that development Ford Mondeo of his.
23:12Whilst Richard Rydell is pretty down past two.
23:16The drive shaft went out of the hairpin.
23:18We came here with 19 points ahead of Manu.
23:21Two qualifying sessions and I was 21 points ahead.
23:24One race and I was 26 points ahead.
23:26I only needed to finish in front of him here.
23:28And it would have been really easy at Brands.
23:29Just take a couple of points.
23:31Now it's down.
23:32If he finishes second, it's down to 14 points again.
23:34And we've got a tough weekend at Brands ahead of us.
23:38It'll be good at Brands.
23:39But it's good at Donington.
23:41Four together.
23:42Tim Harvey, Ailes, Burt.
23:43Big lift number 44 in the Audi.
23:46Curb hopping.
23:48In car with Kelvin Burt.
23:50That's Gary Ailes in the Primera ahead.
23:52Tim Harvey is ahead of him.
23:55Into the crane of curves again.
23:56And Burt just rockets past the Primera.
24:04That's the sheer front of the Volvo five-cylinder engine.
24:09Now we're with Midcliffe.
24:10He's having a go at Gary Ailes as well.
24:13For 14th position.
24:14And he takes it at McLean's.
24:16Goes straight past the Nissan.
24:19It's not so much of a works car as the Audi is.
24:23Into McLean's.
24:25Now.
24:25This is the S's.
24:26Biela is third.
24:27Hoy is fourth.
24:29Then three BMWs together.
24:31These are the two Vauxhall Vectors.
24:34Thompson and Cleland.
24:35Can anybody get past Biela?
24:39They've all caught him.
24:40And there's contact between Revalier and Winklehock.
24:43Peter Cox has a go in the BMW.
24:45Winklehock is his teammate.
24:48And at Goddard.
24:49You see.
24:50With the four-wheel drive Audi.
24:52Frank Biela can stay ahead on traction.
24:55Coming out of the corner.
24:57They're all close up behind him.
24:58But none of them can get past.
25:01Down to Redgate again.
25:03Joe Winklehock.
25:04Number 22.
25:05Behind him is Peter Cox.
25:07So.
25:08There is Winklehock.
25:09There is Cox.
25:10Look back.
25:11That's Peter Cox.
25:12He's the BMW test driver.
25:14And he is very good.
25:18He's following us through the crater curves.
25:20And we are doing 130 miles an hour.
25:24Down to the old hairpin.
25:26Winklehock leads Cox.
25:29Look back.
25:30Up to McLean's at 130.
25:33Under Starkey's Bridge.
25:34Just listen.
25:37This is McLean's.
25:40Turn in.
25:42Absolutely identical performance.
25:45And Biela.
25:46Hoi.
25:47Revalia.
25:48Winklehock.
25:49Cox.
25:49Thompson and Cleland go through.
25:52But of course up front it's still David Leslie in the Honda.
25:56A la menu.
25:57A la menu.
25:57Starkey's straight 130 miles an hour.
26:00Biela is there.
26:01He's looking good.
26:02And John Cleland just has a little look at Thompson as they turn into the S's.
26:08Now we're with John Cleland.
26:10James Thompson is ahead of us.
26:16And Cleland is attacking at Melbourne.
26:19Sails through on the inside.
26:21Bit of demon breaking there.
26:23Thompson has to give way.
26:25Thank you very much says John Cleland.
26:28And at Goddard they're close.
26:31They're very close to Biela.
26:33But they're not getting anywhere near getting past the four-wheel drive Audi.
26:38As the two Vauxhall Vectors exit the corner.
26:41Down to Redgate.
26:43Out goes the board.
26:44Cleland is eight.
26:46Thompson is nine.
26:48And they are going to stay there.
26:49I can't see them catching the people ahead.
26:54But at Goddard John Binclyffe in the Audi has caught Tim Harvey.
27:00Onto the grass goes the Audi.
27:02Binclyffe keeps his foot in it.
27:04Down to Redgate.
27:06I think he's going to catch Harvey and get past the Peugeot 406.
27:10Well, Ben Harvey nearly loses it.
27:15Binclyffe sales pass.
27:17This was his opportunity.
27:18He crossed it with both hands.
27:21Goes past Tim Harvey.
27:23Upper place.
27:27So, both the Audis are still very much in the hunt.
27:30Points for the manufacturer's contest.
27:34They virtually got it made.
27:37And Lesley is on course for win number three for Honda.
27:40With Alan Menuh behind him in second place.
27:43Now, David Lesley, I think, is just keeping it nice and smooth.
27:46He's got a gap between himself and Alan Menuh.
27:49I think Alan Menuh is settling for points.
27:52They are now on the last lap.
27:54And what about third place, though?
27:57Bieler looks as though he's going to get it.
27:58And the points that go with it.
28:00Hoy is going to be in fourth position.
28:02There are the two BMWs.
28:04Out of Goddard.
28:06Down to Redgate again.
28:07This is the last lap.
28:08Bieler third.
28:09Hoy fourth.
28:10Rebali fifth.
28:11Then the two BMWs.
28:13Winklehock and Cox.
28:14The two Vauxhall Vectorers.
28:16Cleland and Thompson.
28:18Into the Crane of Curves for the last time.
28:22At 130 miles an hour.
28:24And Frank Bieler, there is no way he's going to let anybody pass him.
28:30Let alone Will Hoy.
28:31Let alone number 21 there.
28:33Roberto Revalia.
28:35And the Privateers.
28:38Richard Kaye versus Lee Brooks.
28:41Kaye in the Vauxhall Cavalier.
28:43Brooks goes through and passes him to increase his lead in the Privateers Championship.
28:50Now, Kaye, we're with him now, has won more Privateer races.
28:54But he's had a lot of problems which have cost him points.
28:58And so Lee Brown.
28:59There's another one.
29:00Just like.
29:01So off goes Richard Kaye.
29:05And that means to say that Lee Brooks is going to pull well away and increase the points gap.
29:11As for the last time at Goddard, almost within sight of the chequered flag,
29:16Lesley completes the corner.
29:1815 points for victory.
29:2012 points for Alam Menuh in second place.
29:25There's the Renault in the background.
29:27And David Lesley has won.
29:28Lesley takes a comfortable victory for Honda by 2.7 seconds from Alam Menuh's Renault and 8 seconds from Frank Bieler's Audi.
29:39Two Lagunas in the top four and three BMWs together, fifth to seventh, followed by the two Vauxhall's.
29:46I knew that could beat Menuh from the first race.
29:49I was able to simply stretch it away bit by bit as the race went along right to the very end.
29:53Over the moon.
29:54That's a saying I'm not supposed to use.
29:56And I'm really pleased.
29:58Another first and a second.
29:59We're really motoring now.
30:01MSD Honda's doing well.
30:02It's a very appropriate win, actually, from what I've heard as well.
30:06Oh, there's too many rumours.
30:06I'm not going into those.
30:08Let's just say that what we've got here is the best that we'll find anywhere.
30:12Not quite the best, David, because Audi do the triple by winning the Manufacturers' Championship.
30:18Three wins from three championships.
30:21What a wonderful debut year for Audi.
30:24But it's still mighty close in the privateers' contest.
30:2716 points between Brooks and Kaye.
30:3030 points still to be won.
30:32At the last two races of the 1996 Autotrader British Touring Car Championship at Brandt Hatch on September the 22nd.
