00:00It's motorsport, indeed it's motorsport for the next hour of Grandstand, with super bikes from Cadwell Park,
00:06following on from the latest from the Autotrader British Touring Car Championship.
00:10Frank Bieler of Audi, poised for the title in his very first season in the championship.
00:15Indeed, Bieler could make absolutely sure of the title at Thruxton, where the commentator was Murray Walker.
00:24Blue skies and beautiful clouds, but there's a tense atmosphere at Thruxton,
00:28because here today, the British Touring Car Championship could be decided.
00:34In his first year, Audi's Frank Bieler leads Volvo's Ricard Rydell by a massive 80 points, with Renault's Alimenu close behind.
00:43It looks like a racing cert for Bieler.
00:46Especially with conditions like this for qualifying.
00:50Bieler's Audi's got four-wheel drive.
00:52But BMW's Joe Winklehock means to head the grid for race two, and does so to the dismay of the Audi men.
01:02Bieler's seventh, says the board.
01:04And BMW team manager Charlie Lamb is ecstatic, as the delighted Winklehock exits his BMW in pole position.
01:12In comes Bieler. What on earth's gone wrong?
01:17Seventh on the grid in the car, which everyone expected to dominate in the wet.
01:22Frank just can't believe it.
01:24I had 12 minutes to go, and after three, four laps, the circuit was getting better and better.
01:30But I was not sure whether it's possible to go in again, take another set, because it's difficult to judge how much time you have left.
01:38So I stayed out with this set, and probably with another new set of rubber, I think it was possible to be further up in front.
01:49But that was my mistake, and that's why I'm just, I think, seventh on the grid.
01:54But for race one, it's Renault up front, and Alain Menuh's the man to beat at the start.
02:00Fastest of all, including number 21, BMW superstar Roberto Revalho.
02:07Two Renault Lagunas on the front row, Wilhoy with Alain Menuh.
02:11Two BMWs on row two, Revalho and Winklehock.
02:15Row three, Rydell's Volvo, Leslie's Honda.
02:171995 champion John Clelland with Bela, eighth.
02:21Newcomer Peter Cox with James Thompson.
02:24Then it's Bintcliffe's Audi, Bert's Volvo.
02:27James Kay's Honda, Paul Radisic, Ford.
02:29And the two Peugeot 406s, Patrick Watts and Tim Harvey.
02:34The track is mainly dry, but there are some wet patches.
02:39Where they go?
02:41It's a great start by Winklehock.
02:42He comes through, and he's gone straight through between the two Renaults.
02:47Magnificent.
02:48Round Alain, the right-hander, up towards the complex, Campbell, Cobb and Seagrave.
02:54And he's hit Menuh.
02:55And now he's hit Hoy.
02:57And two Renaults hit each other.
02:59Both off, both out.
03:01And one, two, three more off.
03:04One of them's a Vauxhall, another one's a Volvo.
03:06I got pushed off by Rogalia, and I think we'll start with it.
03:10Well, whoever started it, both the Renaults are out.
03:13Right, and there is Alain Menuh, very unhappy indeed.
03:17Kelvin Birch's Volvo is out of the race, and we're with Winklehock now.
03:21A pretty angry Winklehock.
03:23He's last, and he's way, way behind as he gesticulates there.
03:28Leslie Leeds in the Honda.
03:30Bieler is second.
03:31Revalier is third.
03:32And number one, John Cleland in the Vauxhall Vectra, is in sixth place.
03:39Terrific speed.
03:40Now, we're with John Cleland.
03:44This is 150 miles an hour.
03:461-5-0.
03:48Cox and Rydell ahead, and John Binkliffe is charging up behind us.
03:52There he is!
03:53There is John Binkliffe, and he turns in, and there's contact, collision and club.
03:59But Binkliffe has bullied his way through in front of John Cleland.
04:04And he's now down to seventh position.
04:06This is the end of the lap.
04:07There is Rydell in fourth position.
04:11And here is Winklehock, touring in the 1993 champion.
04:16Four times a winner this year.
04:19Fourth in the championship, but he's not going to get any points in this race.
04:23And here are the leaders.
04:24And the complex.
04:25That is Frank Bieler second.
04:27And there is Roberto Revali, a number 21 behind him.
04:30We're with Rydell in fourth position.
04:33And that's the BMW of Revalia ahead.
04:36Round the left-hander at Noble.
04:39Into Goodwood, the long, looping right-hander.
04:42130 miles an hour.
04:43Richard Rydell, front-wheel-drive Volvo.
04:50And Wilhoy and Alar Menuh are conferring about what went wrong.
04:56Look at the way that Menuh is stumping off.
04:59Absolutely downcast.
05:01Here's a replay.
05:02Menuh on the left is hit by Winklehock, who moves to his left.
05:07Hits Wilhoy, hits Menuh again.
05:10Both the Renaults hit each other.
05:12Slide out into the tar wall, out of the race.
05:15No points.
05:17And they were third equal in the championship, Renault.
05:20Off go the Ford, the Vauxhall and the Volvo.
05:23And here's a replay from inside Leslie's car.
05:27He dodges round the left of Bieler.
05:29That is the Audi in front.
05:31Now, look, there is Winklehock.
05:33Bang, bang, bang.
05:34Off go the Renaults.
05:35And Winklehock goes to the right.
05:38And Thompson.
05:39That is James Thompson.
05:40He was one of the three who went off at the complex.
05:42And here are the leaders down to club.
05:45Bieler is second.
05:46Behind him is Revalia.
05:47And there is Leslie.
05:49Behind Revalia is Richard Rydell in the blue and white Volvo.
05:5321 is Revalia.
05:55Third place.
05:56Lap completed.
05:57Fastest so far, David Leslie.
05:59That's 108.6 average.
06:02But it's not as fast as the lap record.
06:04Joe Winklehock, 109 miles an hour.
06:07And the safety car is out.
06:10Obviously, to enable the marshals at the complex to retrieve all the wreckage.
06:16The two Renaults and the other three cars.
06:18There they are.
06:20Over the top, lads.
06:21And there are the Renaults.
06:25Hoy.
06:26Menuh.
06:28Alla.
06:30Taking the sun.
06:31Not that he wants to.
06:34And Kelvin Burke talks to Will Hoy.
06:37Winklehock is agitatedly explaining what happened.
06:39What did happen.
06:43I must say it was absolutely not necessary, really.
06:46I'm really very, very upset.
06:49Because this was in the first corner to try something.
06:53It's impossible.
06:55And I was in the middle, you know, really in a sandwich.
06:56And so we went off all three cars.
07:02And there's the proof.
07:03That's Gary Ailes coming in.
07:11No, he's going out.
07:13And he's rejoining the race, having been in to have something fixed.
07:17It's like an upmarket breakers yard here.
07:19That's Paul Radisic's Mondeo.
07:21The car's spinning coming into the first, into the chicane there.
07:24And I was on the outside.
07:26It was a little bit damp.
07:27And I tried to stop it.
07:28He couldn't.
07:29And it's clouded to him.
07:31Replay.
07:31We're with Patrick Watts.
07:32There's the blue Mondeo in front.
07:35He slides out of our vision.
07:38Bang!
07:38Comes in and hits Kelvin Burke.
07:40They both go off.
07:43And out goes Radisic.
07:44Poor Paul.
07:45That's his 11th retirement from 21 races.
07:49Safety car.
07:50Now it's coming in.
07:51The roof lights are out.
07:53That means to say it's going to peel off the track when it exits the club chicane,
07:58which he's doing now.
07:59The race is on.
08:01Lesley leads.
08:01Bieler second.
08:02Revalia third.
08:03Rydell is fourth.
08:05He took Alain.
08:06The right.
08:08With Richard Rydell chasing Roberto Revalia.
08:12BMW 320i.
08:14This is the complex.
08:16And Rydell goes past Revalia up into third place.
08:19Superb.
08:21Just drives past the Venetian on a perfect line.
08:26So, Richard Rydell third.
08:2821.
08:28Roberto Revalia down to fourth place.
08:30Behind him is the other BMW.
08:33As they surge through.
08:36And it's just under half distance.
08:38Bieler is on course for the championship.
08:40He's in second place.
08:42There he is.
08:42Number 45.
08:43Ahead of him is the Honda Accord of David Lesley.
08:47He's won once already this season.
08:49Now, is Bieler going to try and take the lead from him?
08:52It would be an unnecessary win for the German.
08:55He's on 12 points for second place.
08:57And that will win in the championship if he stays where he is.
09:00But now we're with John Cleland.
09:02Seventh position.
09:03John Binkliffe ahead in the Audi.
09:05And John Cleland's best place this year is second.
09:08And then he's coming up to club.
09:10He's going to try and get past Binkliffe.
09:12Who staves him off.
09:13Binkliffe on the inside.
09:14And the right-hander over the curve.
09:16Inside.
09:17And the left-hander.
09:19Round of club.
09:19Binkliffe sixth.
09:21Cleland seventh.
09:22That's James Thompson.
09:25And at Allard is Binkliffe catching Peter Cox in front in the BMW.
09:31Well, meantime, here are the privateers.
09:33And number 17 is Lee Brooks.
09:35He's passing Matthew Neal.
09:37So Brooks is now the top privateer in the race as we ride with Matthew Neal.
09:42The total cup winner last year and the year before into Allard.
09:47There's Neal.
09:48Brooks ahead of him.
09:48Toyota and Ford Mondeo.
09:53Good one.
09:54This is the battle for the lead.
09:56And what a battle.
09:57David Leslie is in the Honda.
09:59Right behind him, Frank Bieler.
10:00Then it's Ricard Rydell.
10:03Then Roberto Revalia in fourth place.
10:05Round the right-hander at church.
10:07And there's a collision.
10:08It's Steve Robertson in the Ford Mondeo.
10:11Brady City's teammate.
10:12It's not Ford's day.
10:13Off he goes.
10:16Looks to me as though he's not going to get going again.
10:19And James Kaye on the right in the Honda Accord.
10:22Passes Patrick Watts.
10:24Moves up into each position.
10:26Watts were with him in the Peugeot 406.
10:29Watching the Honda Accord.
10:30Pulling away.
10:32A wave of despair.
10:34Into Allard.
10:34At 105 miles an hour.
10:39Here are the leaders.
10:40Leslie, Bieler, Rydell.
10:43Revalia in the BMW.
10:45Then it's Cox and Bidcliffe number 44.
10:48So, it's Honda leading Audi, Volvo.
10:51Two BMWs at the Audi.
10:54Now, we're with Cleland again.
10:56Seventh position and ahead.
10:58Bidcliffe on the right.
10:59Passes Cox.
11:00Moves up into fifth position.
11:02Peter Cox in the BMW.
11:03He's about to be passed by Cleland.
11:06Look for Cleland in the yellow and white.
11:08Vauxhall Vectra lining up.
11:11Dutchman.
11:11Peter Cox's BMW.
11:13Diving through on the inside.
11:15Moving up into sixth position.
11:16And Cox drops back.
11:18It's his first real race this year.
11:20He's the test driver.
11:22Now, we're with Cleland.
11:23And now, he's going for fifth position.
11:25That's Bidcliffe ahead of him.
11:27In the Audi four-wheel drive.
11:29Cleland moves to the left.
11:30He's going to try and pass Bidcliffe on the outside of the chicane.
11:34I wouldn't have thought that was possible.
11:35Has he got the line?
11:36No, he's running wide.
11:38There is Bidcliffe and they hit each other.
11:40Bidcliffe goes over the curve.
11:42Cleland keeps way on.
11:44And he's ahead.
11:45So, and now Cox is right up behind number 44.
11:49Bidcliffe in the Audi.
11:50Peter Cox in the white BMW going for sixth position as they turn into Allard.
11:57But it looks as though he's not going to get it in the blue Nissan Primera.
12:01Gary Hales has caught Tim Harvey's Peugeot.
12:06That's Mick Linford, who's the Peugeot team boss.
12:10And it looks to me as though Tim Harvey's got a problem.
12:12Yes!
12:13Gary Hales goes past and Tim Harvey is touring.
12:16And the battle for victory continues.
12:25Leslie and Bieler.
12:26The champion-elect Frank Bieler is on a certain 12 points.
12:32It'll be 15 if he can get past David Leslie.
12:34But is he going to bother?
12:35This is 150 miles an hour in these two-litre cars.
12:44Down to club and 50 miles an hour.
12:48Leslie, Bieler closes right up using the four-wheel drive, braking to the maximum.
12:52And he's going to try and go through on the inside.
12:57He's got the right line.
12:58Is Leslie going to be able to chop him off as though?
13:01Yes!
13:02Leslie takes the racing line.
13:04We're with Bieler as they come up to the complex.
13:07David Leslie still leading in the Honda Accord.
13:11Bieler right behind him.
13:13There's Ricard Rydell, third.
13:14Roberto Revalia is in fourth place.
13:17They turn in and exiting the complex.
13:20Leslie keeps Bieler behind him.
13:22But it's a hard, hard fight for both of them.
13:25Leslie determined to win.
13:27Bieler is not going to settle for second place.
13:29And this is the last lap but one.
13:32Bieler means to fight every inch of the way to get another first place.
13:35Out of the left-hander at Noble into the right-hander at Goodwood.
13:39Front-wheel drive, Honda Accord.
13:41Four-wheel drive, Audi Quattro.
13:46Round the right-hander at Church.
13:48And now the speed builds up to 150 miles an hour.
13:51This is it.
13:53And that, oh, that's Patrick Watts.
13:55Out, out.
13:56He was in ninth position.
13:58Harvey's already out.
14:00Patrick Watts is out.
14:01Both Peugeots out of the running.
14:03And the Honda mechanics are waiting to see whether David Leslie is going to win this race.
14:10It's into the last lap.
14:12Is this going to be Leslie's second win in the British Touring Car Championship of 1996?
14:17Or is it going to be Frank Bieler's eighth win?
14:24Look how close it is.
14:26Into the complex.
14:27Campbell, Cobb, Seagrave.
14:29We're with Bieler.
14:30He's been the champion of Italy.
14:33He has been the champion of Germany.
14:36He won the World Cup last year.
14:38And if he just finishes where he is, on the last lap, he is going to be the British champion
14:43of 1996.
14:44And he's going for it.
14:51David Leslie closes the door.
14:53Keeps it shut.
14:56Turns into the right-hander and church.
15:01There's a big bump there.
15:03And now, now the speed builds.
15:08If Bieler can get past anywhere, it's got to be here.
15:11Before the club chicane, which they're coming down to now.
15:16And he's not going to do it.
15:18But he's getting closer and closer.
15:20Is he going to do it after all?
15:22Turn right.
15:23Turn left.
15:24Turn right again.
15:24David Leslie.
15:25Bieler comes out from behind him.
15:27Has he got the acceleration to get across the line first?
15:31No.
15:31Leslie wins.
15:33And Bieler finishes in second position.
15:36The Honda mechanics are delighted.
15:38But Bieler is champion.
15:41It's great for Honda, though.
15:42It's great for the MSD team.
15:44And it's great for David Leslie.
15:49A fine drive by Scotsman David Leslie to win for Honda
15:53by less than two-tenths of a second from Bieler's Audi.
15:56Rydell, Revalia and Cleland make it five different makes in the top five places.
16:00And Lee Brooks, ninth, beats Matthew Neill to the top privateer slot.
16:06Congratulations all round at Audi with the Drivers' Championship in their first year in the toughest Toury Car Series in the world.
16:14Guard of honour for the new British champion, Frank Bieler, and there are still five races to go in the 1996 series.
16:23Well done, Frank.
16:25So, with Frank Bieler, the new commanding champion, who's going to be second?
16:30With only 25 points covering second to fifth, it's wide open as David Leslie joyously sprays the champagne.
16:40Meantime, in the Williams Renault garage, they're just finishing up the work to get the cars out on the line for the second race.
16:48And what happened in the first, Will?
16:49Well, I was on the drive side, as was Joe behind me, and Elaine was on the slightly damp side.
16:54And I got a good start.
16:56It was alongside Elaine, but we were, you know, quite a long way apart.
16:59I went round the outside of the corner.
17:01And Joe then came through and tried to force his way between us, and I gave him enough room.
17:05And suddenly, Joe just whacks me at the back or the side and just shoves me straight into the tyres.
17:11And looking at the skid marks, and I've spoken to Elaine, it looks like Joe pushed him wide.
17:16Elaine got onto the grass, and then came back off the track, off the grass, back onto the track, and obviously made contact with Joe, and then Joe hit me.
17:23So, I mean, he just didn't give, looks like he just didn't give Elaine enough room.
17:26So, it's just totally unnecessary.
17:27There's enough room for three cars through there.
17:29Well, basically, Winkleluck had a better start than both Will and I.
17:34I was on the right-hand side, which was still damp.
17:37But I had a, well, it was a good start in those conditions.
17:41And then we were alongside, side by side, going round the left-hander, which is easy flat.
17:46And we could have gone round, like, easily like that, but Winkleluck just decided to push me off on the grass.
17:52And then I came back on the track sideways, and he hit me again, and then I was off in the tyres.
17:59Well, now it's race two coming up.
18:01Winkleluck pole position, Rydell second.
18:03And Thompson's, Vauxhall and Hoy's Renault, third and fourth.
18:07Race one winner, David Leslie, with Revalia.
18:11Beeler down at seventh, and Peter Cox, eighth.
18:14Patrick Watson, Kelvin Bird, next.
18:16Menu, a lowly eleventh, with Bintcliffe, twelfth.
18:20Followed by Gary Ailes and Paul Radisic.
18:24Now, happily, the rain's held off.
18:26The track is dry, but is it going to be carnage again after the start?
18:30Well, soon, no, they're away.
18:31Winkleluck leads, Rydell slots in the second.
18:34Thompson is third.
18:36Bieler's going well, up into fourth position, followed by Revalia.
18:39Out of Allard.
18:41Turn into the complex.
18:42Here they come.
18:43Winkleluck's leading.
18:44Rydell, Thompson, Revalia.
18:46Where's Will Hoy?
18:48Into the left-hander and Cobb.
18:53There's the BMW.
18:55And David Leslie is off.
18:58He's been hit again, and the race one winner is last.
19:02Number 11, David Leslie, Honda Accord, right at the back.
19:07But ahead of him, it's fast and furious at the front.
19:10Nose to tail, absolutely flat out.
19:12Scrabbling for grip.
19:14Just look at it.
19:16But Paul Radicic is going well this time.
19:19It's look for the Ford Mondeo number six.
19:21There it is.
19:22There's Paul Radicic from New Zealand.
19:25Down into Church Corner.
19:27Fighting for paces.
19:29Past the kerb cam.
19:32Lap one out of 19.
19:34Down to club.
19:35It's BMW, Volvo, Vauxhall, Vectra, Winkleluck, Rydell and Thompson.
19:40They've all three of them won races this year out of the club chicane.
19:45Into another lap.
19:47Now, here's a replay with Patrick Watts.
19:49Let's see what happened to David Leslie.
19:51He's ahead of us in the Accord.
19:53Revalia on the left.
19:55Turn in.
19:57Turn in again.
19:58And there's just a biff from Patrick Watts.
20:02So now we know what happened.
20:04And Winklehawk leads.
20:07It's a lap record for Peter Cox, the Dutchman.
20:10110 miles an hour average around Thruxton.
20:14Rydell is second.
20:15Thompson is third.
20:16Revalia is fourth.
20:17And we're in car with Frank Bieler.
20:20He started seventh.
20:21He's still seventh.
20:22That's Peter Cox ahead of him in the BMW.
20:25He doesn't know the track as well as Bieler does.
20:27Bieler nips through on the inside in the Audi.
20:31Up into seventh position.
20:33Here he is.
20:34And Alamedou is flying.
20:36He's got ahead of Peter Cox.
20:39Alamedou in the Renault Laguna.
20:41Trying to make up for that terrible time he had in race one.
20:44We're with Rydell now.
20:46Second in the race.
20:47Race leader.
20:48Winklehawk.
