00:00We're back at Hidden Valley and getting ready for the third race of the day, a great crowd
00:08in attendance here and some very hot conditions and they've seen some great action too and
00:13despite all the carnage we haven't had any calls for the Munro safety car today which
00:18is out on the circuit at the moment as the cars do their siding lap, hopefully we won't
00:23have any calls for it in the third race of the day either.
00:26This is the starting grid for the decider, Scape on pole, he only needs to finish in the
00:31top five to win the round, Tanda lines up alongside him, Seaton and Larkham, Longhurst and Faulkner
00:36and Greg Murphy and Craig Baird on row four.
00:38Tony Longhurst having a pretty consistent day, Stephen Ellery, good showing too from the super
00:42cheap team, Neil Crompton, Dougal McDougal, Brad Jones, Stephen Johnson, Larry Perkins, Jason
00:48Barguana and Paul Radisic clawing his way right up to 16th in that race too.
00:52Mark Poole and John Bauer recovering after what's been an awful day for the Tasmanian.
00:57Paul Will and Cameron McLean, Romano and Lowndes, there he is, went from second to 22nd.
01:02He's off row 11 and Smerden and Ashby off 16.
01:05There's an interesting story in there too with Lowndes, apparently the track is breaking
01:08up very badly.
01:09I'm taking up the valley section up in that 180 degree left-hander and there's a lot of
01:15debris and they think that maybe that's what punctured Lowndes' tyre in race two.
01:18So the team's got to be very careful as they come up through that section of the circuit
01:21to try and avoid a puncture for race three.
01:24Now there's the who's out board.
01:27Peter Doolman went by the wayside earlier today.
01:29Karen McConville is a non-starter in this one, courtesy of that big crash we saw with
01:33Russell Ingle.
01:34It almost rolled McConville's car and Donoher is out as well.
01:37He's got problems with a steering arm.
01:39Can tell you some late mail from the pits is that Craig Lowndes has also been fined for
01:44speeding in there.
01:45So that's a point of interest for you.
01:46There's the points as they stand for this round.
01:49Scaife on top.
01:51Clear of Tander, Seton, Larkham and Longhurst.
01:53Tander and Seton tied on points there.
01:55So critical final race for the Ford and the Commodore driver.
01:58As if Tander can get the start here.
02:01But Scaife's been starting brilliantly.
02:04He really is on form this year.
02:05He's finished no worse than second place, Mark Scaife, in the opening four rounds of the
02:10championship.
02:11Looking like a winner here.
02:12He really is putting together an incredibly strong 2000 campaign.
02:15I reckon the Dark Horse is Longhurst in this because he's fired up.
02:19There's no doubt about that.
02:20These are the two title contenders on the front row.
02:22The 16 points separate them in terms of what they've earned today and where they stand
02:26in the championship.
02:27Scaife on pole.
02:28Tander eager for points and a pack of Fords in behind them.
02:31We get set for the third race of the day.
02:33Who will get the jump?
02:34Will it be Scaife or Tander?
02:35Tander, Tander, Tander.
02:36Great start from the youngster.
02:38The 23-year-old from Western Australia lights him up.
02:41And he has taken the lead.
02:42Scaife under a lot of pressure from Larkham as they work down towards turn one.
02:46Faulkner, a brilliant start up alongside.
02:48There's a bit of contact in there.
02:49Oh, up against the barrier.
02:50Yep, that's Longhurst.
02:51He's had contact with Ellery.
02:52Ellery.
02:52Steven Ellery.
02:53Wow.
02:54Steven Johnson's managed to get through there as well.
02:56Now, that's Costellery who had a brilliant performance in race one.
03:00That's Costellery.
03:01Paul Romano.
03:02Oh, dear me, again.
03:03Paul Romano in a tangle there with one of the Optus Commodores.
03:07Oh, he's having a terrible season, isn't he?
03:10He's really 33rd in the championship.
03:12He really needed some good points here to get on to the grid in Canberra.
03:15Really struck me throughout this weekend.
03:17They head up into the valley for the first time.
03:20Nose to nose, bumper to bumper.
03:22That's the field.
03:22Sorts itself out down toward the Esses.
03:24There's Paul Romano.
03:25There's damage to that rear end.
03:26Oh, look at the axles.
03:28Yeah, he's broken the axle.
03:29I've had a rotten weekend, though.
03:30I meant to get a new engine from New Zealand,
03:32but to fly it here to Darwin,
03:34granted all sorts of dramas,
03:35it's currently sitting on the dock in Malaysia, believe it or not.
03:37So they've had a rotten weekend.
03:39So Gar Tander gets the jump on the Houlton Racing Team.
03:43In the final heat here at Hidden Valley,
03:45can Tander bring it home for the Valvolink?
03:47Come and says, look at the gap.
03:48He's got on the marked skate machine
03:50as they come across the start-finish line for the first time.
03:52Paul Rannis.
03:54There's smoke off the front right.
03:56I think he's got a tyre pumping there.
03:58Oh, boy.
03:59He's got it going.
04:01Oh, gee, this is going to be time for a year out.
04:04I hope the flags are being waved.
04:06I'm sure the yellow flags are waving
04:07and driver's getting in a single file.
04:09Just hope no one's caught out there.
04:11And that's Steve Reid who is parked there
04:12very precariously in the Optus Common.
04:14Look at Morris taking evasive action.
04:16So too Bow.
04:16Anthony Track.
04:17All of them trying to get around him.
04:19Goodness me.
04:20I bet he's sitting there gripping his teeth.
04:22I bet he was.
04:23He just can't get that car started.
04:24So he's stuck in a very vulnerable situation.
04:26Fortunately, the field will know he's there.
04:28And we're ready for him next time around
04:29if he's still stuck there.
04:30Look at how close Seaton gets.
04:32Up behind the back of Larcombe's Mitre 10 forward.
04:34Oh, what a lovely car.
04:35Oh, Bargwana.
04:36Bargwana.
04:36So he's had a wretched day.
04:38Broken wheel after that collision earlier in the day.
04:40He really has been struggling.
04:42Let's have a look at the replay, Baz.
04:45Oh, look at that.
04:47JB up the back.
04:48Who was that?
04:49The ninny.
04:49Now, they're all taking evasive action for Steve Reid.
04:51That is down in turn one.
04:53Everyone was braking late.
04:54Their bow broke.
04:54In fact, this is the opening lap, in fact.
04:59Right.
04:59Now, look at the back there.
05:00There's John Bauer there.
05:02Now, watch.
05:02Who goes right up in the air?
05:05That could have been Bargwana, I think.
05:08You want to show you.
05:09Everyone slowed up for Stephen Ellery, obviously.
05:13Wow.
05:14Right underneath that car.
05:15Yeah, amazing.
05:16Two rear wheels off the deck.
05:17So, drama upon drama.
05:21We always see it at Hidden Valley,
05:22particularly at that turn one,
05:23is the end of a one-kilometre-long straight.
05:25But this huge field trying to funnel into this very narrow turn.
05:29Oh, no.
05:32I remember since you're saying,
05:33what have I done to deserve this?
05:34Unbelievable, isn't it?
05:35He came into this championship round third in the point standings.
05:38He really needed a strong points hold to continue the fight
05:40against Scaife and Tanner, but that's...
05:43He's broken something on the steering there.
05:44That front right...
05:45Oh, yeah, look at it.
05:47That's very damaging for Port Radisic
05:49and Jason Bargwana as well.
05:52But here's his team-mate, Garth Tander,
05:53fighting back in this championship
05:54as he takes the fight right up to the Holden factory team.
06:00Mark Markham in third position,
06:01seating up behind him.
06:02Then it's John Faulkner
06:03having a very competitive outing
06:05in the Team Asia Online Commodore.
06:07Then it's Longhurst, Crompton,
06:08up in seventh there.
06:10Murphy, Jones in the top ten.
06:12Bradley Jones having another consistent run
06:14in the Aussie male forward.
06:17Flash under our camera building up to 260 kilometers an hour
06:20while they break hard the turn line.
06:21There's Paul Radisic out of the action.
06:24And that's a huge disappointment for the Shell team.
06:26They really have been in the wars all weekend.
06:28Pippenheim has battled for fifth place at the moment.
06:30Faulkner coming under all sorts of pressure from Tony Longhurst
06:33in the Caltechs.
06:34Abilene Falcon up in front.
06:36They look at the gap between Garth Tander and Mark Scape
06:38who sits in second.
06:40Larkham, that is a terrific performance
06:42from the Queenslander in the Mitre 10.
06:44Forty holds out.
06:45Glenn Seaton, the first of the forwards.
06:47Mark Larkham doing a sensational job in third.
06:50And Faulkner, a great performance.
06:51Look at Seaton trying to get down the inside here
06:53in the valley part of the circuit.
06:55Wow, that was close.
06:57That team has had to suffer a few growing pains
07:00and cause the Mitre 10 operation.
07:02Oh, Seaton's gone off.
07:03Oh, Seaton.
07:03Oh, look at that.
07:04Faulkner threw.
07:04Faulkner took advantage.
07:06And look at Longhurst on the outside
07:07of the FTR Falcon.
07:09They're going to go side by side.
07:11Long way around.
07:12Oh, look at this.
07:13Longhurst across the grass.
07:14Goodness me.
07:16I think he's actually broken some of the bodywork there.
07:18Spoiler.
07:19Now, if he's damaged the undertray on that front spot
07:22that's going to hurt the car's performance.
07:23Yes, it has.
07:24Compton will be there too.
07:24He'll be getting a sniff of this.
07:25Look at Neil Crompton tucked in behind Tony Longhurst now.
07:28They run down the one kilometre long main straight.
07:31You can see Longhurst has damaged his front spoiler.
07:33You can see on the left.
07:33Look at Crompton.
07:34That's Neil Crompton diving down the inside at turn one.
07:37That's a smart move.
07:38Bear tries to go.
07:39Oh, no.
07:40The Stoane Brothers teammates have been caught up together.
07:43Oh, damn, mate.
07:43Oh, Ross and Jimmy will not be happy.
07:46They're definitely not.
07:48Tony Longhurst having his best run in a long, long time.
07:51It's brought it all undone in the space of half a lap.
07:53Well, Craig Baird, I'm not sure whether he's managed to rejoin the action.
07:59Looks like he has.
08:00But Tony Longhurst, front and rear of the Caltex Haveline Ford, badly damaged.
08:04That's the last time he'll be doing a post-race interview with you.
08:06That brought him a lot of luck.
08:11I reckon I'll put the bonkers on.
08:12Tanda continues to lead up front.
08:14The man sitting in second place, though.
08:16Markscape is the fastest on the circuit.
08:18A 110, 108 for Markscape.
08:21And through the speed trap, 255 kilometres an hour.
08:25All the damaged material lying around the track there.
08:28Let's have a look at the replay.
08:29What's Crompton?
08:30What's this?
08:30Oh, that's a brilliant move.
08:32Amazing.
08:32Good.
08:33Hot stuff, though.
08:34Now, right, right, let's get a look here with Baird in.
08:38Yeah, see, Craig was going.
08:39As I know, he's actually Baird's in the back of Longhurst's car.
08:43Yeah, yeah.
08:45So, altercation between the two teammates.
08:47That's not what you want to see.
08:48Craig was trying to get out the inside of Tony,
08:50and Tony was sort of taking the turn.
08:54Now, folks, keep an eye on Craig Lowndes.
08:56Bear in mind, he dropped back to 22nd position.
08:58He has moved up to 10th.
08:59Stephen Johnson sits in 11th.
09:01Larry Perkins is 12th.
09:02Well, Larry's just taken Johnson for 11th as they came under brakes for Turn 1.
09:07So, Larry on the move.
09:08They've had all sorts of engine problems this weekend.
09:10Larry blew an engine in the warm-up.
09:13They put a new one in.
09:14Russell Ingle also had engine problems in heat, too.
09:16So, it has not been a good weekend for the Castrol Perkins operation.
09:21But, Larry's storming back in this final heat.
09:23And there he is.
09:24The rat.
09:25And that'll put him right down the point standings.
09:27A very damaging weekend in his campaign.
09:29Looking so strong after Eastern Creek.
09:32Shows he can go from top to bottom very, very quickly in this championship.
09:36Some long faces.
09:36Something flapping on the pies and his tongue.
09:39Some long faces in the Dick Johnson racing pit over that.
09:42They've been struggling all weekend.
09:43Stephen Johnson, there he is, currently sits in 11th position.
09:46Fighting his way forward.
09:47Brad Jones has dropped back to 15th, courtesy of that contact between Baird.
09:52Look at this.
09:53Glenn Seaton now having a run down the inside of John Faulkner at Turn 1.
09:56Who's got the bigger brakes?
09:57Faulkner.
09:58Faulkner comes back.
09:59Honestly, I thought he was the bigger brakes.
10:01It was that close.
10:02He thought there was going to be contact there.
10:03The seat managed to shut the nose of the car down just in time.
10:07Faulkner moved across.
10:08This is a fantastic showing for Faulkner.
10:1346-year-old veteran.
10:1543-year-old, I should say.
10:17Multiple class winner for Toyota many years ago.
10:20And he's been a strong competitor in V8 Supercar.
10:22But this is really the most impressive showing we've seen so far.
10:26Right up there in the thick of things.
10:27Faulkner in fourth position.
10:29Fighting tooth and nail with Glenn Seaton for position in the top five.
10:31His team, since they signed Asia Online as a major sponsor around the Melbourne Grand Prix this year.
10:37They have really come on strong.
10:39Lots of things happening in the background to assist the development of this car.
10:42Look at Seaton, though.
10:42Now starting to hound him around the back parts of the circuit.
10:45They head down here to the left-hander.
10:47Which brings them on to the one-kilometre-long main straight.
10:50Will Seaton get a good run?
10:51And tucking close to Faulkner.
10:52Faulkner gets plenty of traction down.
10:55And Seaton is not close enough at this stage.
10:57The horsepower weighs just very little.
10:59It even looks a bit.
11:00Fastest lap so far as Craig Lounce.
11:02Fights his way back from that puncture.
11:041-0-9-9-9.
11:06Gled Seaton down the inside.
11:07Tries it again.
11:08Hard under brakes.
11:08But Faulkner goes a little bit deeper.
11:10That's Cameron McLean.
11:11Cameron McLean has a fire of some sort at the back of the car there.
11:14The back left.
11:15Oh, look, you can see that.
11:17Oh, look, the grass's on fire.
11:19Obviously dropping a bit of.
11:20And underneath, see there, it's.
11:22Dropping a bit of oil or something.
11:23Let's hope the Queenslander gets out of the car quickly.
11:25There he is.
11:26Let's hope the marshals get over the old extinguishers.
11:31What can you do?
11:33Has not been a good weekend for the Greenfield mowers operation.
11:36Really struggling in 2000.
11:38Seen to form up in a two-car team with Rod Salmon.
11:40Get some more money into the operation and hopefully prevent a more competitive package.
11:43Look at this, though, Seaton all over the Team Asia online machine.
11:47The FDR Falcon driver pushing hard for every point he can get.
11:51Coming into this round, he was fourth in the championship points.
11:53Seaton needs every point he can get.
11:54He was going to challenge Mark Skate before this championship's over.
11:57Forkner currently 16th in the points.
11:59An important round for him, too.
12:00Seaton, 43-year-old, originally from Palmerston in New Zealand.
12:06Spent most of his life in Australia.
12:08Very strong Capemba and Oz car as well.
12:12The guy really got his sights on the top of V8's supercar.
12:14Look at this tremendous battle of Seaton now.
12:16Gets in the draft.
12:17Looks down the inside as they break hard for turn one.
12:19Forkner goes a lot deeper.
12:21And he's managing to box in this FDR car.
12:23Look at Seaton, though.
12:24Really nails it in the middle of the corner as they come out again.
12:28So, Forkner under maximum pressure.
12:30Yeah, I think he was letting Forkner go in nice and deep.
12:33And Glenn settling his car so he can get a better run round and a better run out.
12:38Pim and I also on Craig Lowndes, who continues to move his way through the field.
12:42On the back of his former team-mate, Greg Murphy, at the moment.
12:46Lowndes is up to ninth place.
12:47And on the back of this freight train that is in behind this duo.
12:51At the moment, Forkner sits in fourth place.
12:54Seaton in behind him.
12:55Here's the man who's leading the way.
12:56Escape, yep, closing the gap a little.
13:02Well, let's look at this replay, Baz.
13:06Poor wheel it is.
13:07Oh, yeah, it just looks...
13:09Well, he didn't see any smoke, but he just must have locked up on the rear end.
13:12The rear end just made me break balance too much on the rear end.
13:16Tirouetted off the circuit.
13:17So here's the attack.
13:18Mark Larkham in third position.
13:20And look at this, Seaton on the outside of Forkner.
13:21Look at this back here.
13:23This looks good.
13:23This is Craig Baird having a go at Neil Crompton down the front straight.
13:26Coming for the ride.
13:27Greg Murphy and so too.
13:28Craig Lowndes, look at Lowndes, looking left and right.
13:31Don't think there'll be any change of position here.
13:33Murphy defends for Lowndes.
13:34Oh, I thought Baird was...
13:35No, look at this.
13:36Lowndes goes around the outside of Greg Murphy.
13:37The two former team-mates and not a bit of paint traded in the slightest.
13:41Well, Mark Larkham will be hoping that Glenn Seaton doesn't get in front of John Forkner.
13:45Because at the moment, if Larkham finishes third and Seaton finishes fifth, Larkham will
13:49be third.
13:49He'll be on the podium.
13:50His first podium ever in the Shell Championship Series.
13:53That'll be a real turn up for the Mitre 10 team.
13:55That is remarkable.
13:56He's done so well here this weekend and he continues to do so.
13:58The Mitre 10 Falcon currently sits in third place in race three here at Hidden Valley.
14:03Garth Tander leading the way.
14:05The 23-year-old from Marksgate, Faulkner in fourth, Seaton fifth, Neil Crompton and Craig
14:09Baird, Greg Murphy rounds out the top eight.
14:11Then it's Lowndes, Perkins and McDoodle.
14:14Can Tander take out race three?
14:15Find out right after this.
14:25Welcome back to Hidden Valley.
14:27Garth Tander leading the way and possibly on course for his first championship race win
14:33of the year.
14:34Seven laps remain in the third one and the gap has closed a little bit.
14:39Tander has been wringing the absolute neck out of the Valvoline Cummins Commodore and
14:43at one point during the course of that ad break ran a little bit wide.
14:46That enabled Scaife to close the gap somewhat.
14:49Yeah, Scaife has really been able to close that distance.
14:51Garth, which may be a little bit of tyre trouble.
14:53Oh, Lowndes.
14:55Oh, definitely.
14:57Can you believe the luck?
14:59He's definitely run over a black cow or something.
15:00There's no doubt about it.
15:01Can you believe the luck of our reigning champion in 2000?
15:05The team had apparently called him in for a tyre change.
15:07Can you believe it?
15:08So we'll try and get a closer look at just what might have caused that.
15:11Let's have a squiz at the earlier incident.
15:14Now he got past Murphy there.
15:15Back end just locked up.
15:17Yeah, he may be in a lot of tyre trouble.
15:19Yeah.
15:20This track breaking up.
15:21A lot of these tyres are getting a hard time.
15:24And the temperatures here are tremendous.
15:28It's a very, very hot afternoon.
15:29Tremendously energy sapping.
15:31Doesn't that tell the story, the face there of Craigland a moment ago?
15:34Yeah, I was going to say, yeah, it does.
15:35He cannot believe how this championship's working out for him.
15:37But there you go.
15:38Seaton.
15:40In front of Faulkner now.
15:41Oh, look at Baird.
15:42And look at Crompton too.
15:43He's having a good run.
15:45It's about time.
15:46He's got some luck, hasn't he?
15:47Really?
15:48Yeah, so Crompton inside the top six.
15:51Now this is the second off for Craigland.
15:52Same thing again.
15:53Back end locking up.
15:54I'd say his tyres are...
15:56Well, you've got to give him some sort of credit.
15:57That was a remarkable fight back from 22nd position.
16:00And he got up as high as eighth.
16:03Yeah, but that's the second time he's backed it in.
16:05He's got some problem with his rear brakes.
16:06Or he's got no grip on the rear tyres or something.
16:08Because the car looked very unbalanced under brakes.
16:11For someone from Craigland's calibre to lose it.
16:14About like that.
16:15Yeah, it definitely looked like there was so much on the rear, wouldn't it?
16:18But Neil Crompton now, up in the top six.
16:21Fighting off a determined Craig bed.
16:22Greg Murphy having a very competitive run for the Kmart-Castrol team.
16:26They have struggled, really struggled for qualifying pace
16:28throughout the first rounds of the championship.
16:32You'd have to say that Scaifey's going to...
16:34I reckon Scaifey's going to struggle to get past Tanner.
16:36Because Tanner's pretty good under pressure, isn't he?
16:39Well, Tanner hasn't had a heat win this year.
16:43This will be his first heat win for 2000 if he can't bring it home.
16:45Scaifey applying more and more pressure.
16:48We've still got a few laps in which to do something about the leader.
16:51And there's Seat, Faulkner in fourth.
16:54Crompton, Baird, Murphy, and it's behind them.
16:58Larry Perkins, great fight back.
16:59He's up to ninth and Ingle in tenth.
17:02So the Kastrol team have had a pretty hard day mechanically.
17:05Quite a lot of debris laying around everywhere.
17:07So it's amazing, actually, there's not more punches.
17:09Talk about the Kastrol team.
17:11And the boys have been working very, very hard down there today.
17:14Larry Perkins, an engine change.
17:15And they've changed Russell Ingle's engine in the lead-up to this heat as well.
17:18So it's been non-stop at Kastrol Perkins Motorsport.
17:22Well, we just heard from the pits that the possible cause of Lowndes' second spin there
17:25and his eventual retirement was another flat tyre.
17:29So...
17:29Wow.
17:31He really doesn't have much luck at all in 2000.
17:34Things not going the way for our reigning champion.
17:36Let's have a look at this.
17:37Oh, yeah.
17:37You can see the top.
17:38Oh, that's what all that rubber is.
17:39Yeah, it's all breaking up.
17:40There it is.
17:40There you go.
17:43OK, that was when he was coming out of the spin at Turn 1.
17:49Look at this.
17:49Now, Skate's closed the door here.
17:51So things getting tight at the top end of the order.
17:53With laps counting down.
17:55Four to go.
17:56Tanda under all sorts of pressure from Skate.
17:57Looking for his third win of the day.
17:59Nothing in it at the moment as they exit Turn 1.
18:02Yeah, well, Skate was clearly seven-tenths of a second faster on that previous lap.
18:07Tanda, I'd say, is in tyre trouble.
18:09Yeah, I was going to say, it looks like Skate's tyres were in better neck than Tanda.
18:12Yeah, the gas is sliding all over the road.
18:15He's been catching some remarkable high-speed slides.
18:18He's really pushing this car as hard as he can go.
18:20But once those tyres are past the use-by date,
18:24it's very, very hard to hold out a car that's got tyres in better condition.
18:28It's a vicious circle as well, because the harder you try,
18:30the more a thing slides around and the more it tears in pieces.
18:33Well, you've got to remember, too, it's quite warm here.
18:3533 degrees temperature, but on the circuit, 44 degrees.
18:38So all this hard work from the drivers, coupled with that hot temperature,
18:43is now taking its toll.
18:45So Garth Tanda in defence.
18:47Oh, dear me.
18:48Just a slower car there.
18:49Mike Gimri.
18:50As the cars duck around, three laps remaining.
18:52Can Garth Tanda hold out our series leader
18:56and score his first Hingwin in the Shell series for 2,000?
18:59He's under maximum pressure here.
19:01260 k's hard on the brakes for this very tight left-hander
19:05at the end of the main straight.
19:07Great shot there as they swing out up toward the Essas.
19:10Once again, Garth Tanda really trying to hold this lot together.
19:15Skate has been able to close,
19:16but has not found an opportunity to hit the nose of the car
19:19alongside the Valvoline Cummins machine yet.
19:21Tanda's doing a great job.
19:22Incredible maturity from Garth Tanda,
19:24the 23-year-old from Western Australia.
19:26I mean, you know, this kid has really come on so strong
19:28in the last 12 months in particular.
19:30And as you can see, he's struggling with his car
19:32and yet driving with an incredible level head.
19:35You've just got to hope that when you sit Skate in his position,
19:38you push him as hard as you can.
19:40They run in just a little bit deep,
19:41but I don't know, he's good.
19:44Even though he's been sliding the car around,
19:46he would appear to be in trouble
19:47because Skate was able to close the game.
19:48If you look at his last lap, a 1.10.59,
19:50Skate for 1.10.74.
19:53He's got his pace to stand.
19:54Look, Skate, he looks like he's dropping off the pace of it now.
19:57So we're not sure what's going on here,
19:59but whatever has happened,
20:00Tanda has responded to the challenge.
20:02Two laps remaining for the 23-year-old Western Australia.
20:06Skate is definitely dropping back now.
20:08Well, there's been such high-pressure driving.
20:10Oh, JP.
20:11Look at the damage to the Caterpillar Ford.
20:13Yeah, me.
20:14Well, he qualified third fastest, fastest Ford this weekend,
20:18and look at the way his weekend has ended.
20:20It started with a misfire on the warm-up lap of the opener of the day,
20:24and it has just gone downhill from there.
20:27Very, very...
20:28I think he's probably good.
20:33We missed that radio concert.
20:37Change of position further up the order.
20:39Yeah, MJB.
20:41Yeah, I lost the power steering there to the train.
20:43Is that hooked up to the water pump, is it?
20:45Yeah, it is, mate.
20:48So there you go.
20:49That answers that.
20:49Yeah, I can get them down.
20:50But look, we've got a black smoke coming out the front.
20:52Make sure nothing's on fire, please.
20:54That doesn't look like anything's on fire there,
20:56but that is obviously the problem.
20:57The power steering has completely gone in that car.
20:59Craig Baird has moved past Neil Crompton to take sixth place.
21:02This is how they stand.
21:03Tander, Scaife, Larcombe, Seton, Faulkner in fifth place,
21:06Baird in sixth,
21:07and it's Crompton, Murphy, Perkins and Russell Ingle.
21:09Round's out of the top ten.
21:10They will get the last lap forward to go this time around.
21:13So Garth Tander headed for his first heat victory for season 2000,
21:17and Scaife, all he's got to do is stay exactly where he is,
21:20and he will win the round.
21:21Well, this is a very even contest that last time around.
21:23There was just a tenth of a second in it,
21:24so Tander has responded magnificently to this challenge from Scaife.
21:28A few laps ago, he was all over,
21:29and it looked like Tander may have been in serious tyre trouble,
21:32and he has responded very, very strongly,
21:34and he could bring this one home.
21:35The first victory for Tander in 2000 in a Shell Championship round.
21:39Well, he was so fired up for it, too,
21:42when they arrived and started doing practice here yesterday.
21:44The car had an electrical gremlin.
21:46They have had a few dramas sorting this car out.
21:48Bear in mind, in race one,
21:49they had a plug come out of the gearbox,
21:53and it started leaking oil, one of the selector plugs,
21:56and it looked a bit tentative for him.
21:57He managed to nurse it to the line,
21:59just getting to fourth place,
22:00but this is going to be his first heat victory of the season.
22:03The 23-year-old from Western Australia certainly looking good.
22:06This is going to tighten things up, too.
22:07If they finish the way they are,
22:08Tander will only be 12 points in arrears of Scaife
22:10in the championship points.
22:12So that really is...
22:13The season started off this way,
22:14a battle between Gary Rogers Motorsport and the almighty HRT,
22:17and now we're into round five,
22:19and that battle's continuing.
22:20The 23-year-old headed for the chequered flag
22:23and his first heat win of the season.
22:24Well done to Garth Cantor.
22:25He flashes the lights at the Valvoline Cummins team.
22:28Well done.
22:29The youngster takes out...
22:30Good work, boys.
22:32Well done.
22:35Well, you can tell there he's a very happy camper.
22:38No doubt about it.
22:39He's been trying to get that first win of the season,
22:42and he was so determined.
22:43At the end of that first race today, he said to me,
22:45Rusty, we've got to do a lot of work with this car.
22:47They made a few changes.
22:48He was so keen to get some more points
22:49and make sure that Mark Scaife couldn't gallop away
22:52with the championship.
22:53A very solid drive from the youngster,
22:55and he's incredibly well-deserved.
22:57That was great.
22:58Really well-deserved and good for Gary Rogers.
23:00There he is.
23:01Tander, Scaife, Larkham, Seton and Forkner.
23:03We will come back on the other side of this
23:04to wrap it all up from Hidden Valley.
23:06And almost end for end for Jason Barguana,
23:19and what a day it's been for John Bauer as well.
23:21But at the end, the man who finished on top
23:23of the third race was Garth Tander.
23:26A tremendous performance edging out Mark Scaife.
23:28Mark Larkham, well done.
23:29And Glenn Seton as well.
23:30A tremendous performance.
23:31You can see a couple of other standouts there.
23:33Neil Crompton doing very well,
23:34and both the Castrol Commodores getting inside the top ten.
23:37Right now, though, let's go to Mark on the podium.
23:41Well, the V8 supercars returned to Hidden Valley,
23:43and the Northern Territory government,
23:45and indeed the fans, made a big round of applause
23:47for supporting the V8 so magnificently.
23:49A great show at Hidden Valley this weekend.
23:52Well, in third place today, a good performance.
23:53The Fords weren't quite there this weekend,
23:55but they're staying right in the thick of this championship.
23:57Put your hands together for Glenn Seton.
24:03Well done.
24:03That's the second podium in two rounds.
24:06That's a pretty good way to start pulling those points together.
24:08Yeah, it's actually...
24:09We finished third on the last three rounds.
24:11We didn't get on the podium in Adelaide
24:12because we didn't finish the last race in a good position,
24:14but we're making a habit of this.
24:15I just want to get a little bit further,
24:16and hopefully we can from Canberra on
24:18because Canberra's going to be a great circuit for all of us.
24:21But thank you to Ford and Ford Credit,
24:23Mobile and also Thermo King and all my sponsors
24:25and all the guys on the team
24:26who've been working pretty hard to get us back on pace.
24:28Congratulations, Glenn Seton,
24:30becoming a real force in the Shell Championship in 2000.
24:33Strongs, these are strong performances from him
24:34as the season progresses.
24:35Well, in second place today,
24:36a fantastic fight in the third heat
24:38and indeed his first Shell Championship Series heat win for 2000,
24:42Garth Tander.
24:47When we were watching Scaifey close in on you there,
24:49we thought your tyres were shot,
24:51but you managed to respond pretty magnificently to that challenge.
24:54Yeah, I made a couple of mistakes
24:55and Scaifey managed to catch up,
24:57so I just put the head down
24:58and managed to pull a small gap
24:59so I could, you know, conserve on that last lap.
25:01But thanks to our guys,
25:02we had to completely re-engineer the car
25:04after what was slapped on us with that 100 mil.
25:06And thanks to Valvoline, Cummins and Holden,
25:09all the fans here have been sensational
25:10and we're looking forward to the next one.
25:13Yeah, it should be.
25:13It's a great fight.
25:14You're now only 12 points behind Scaifey.
25:16You had a bad round at Eastern Creek,
25:17but, you know, things have turned around here.
25:19Yeah, it's good to be back up here
25:20after what happened at Eastern Creek
25:21and the guys are doing a sensational job.
25:23The car's got great pace
25:24and we're looking forward to challenging all the way to the end.
25:27Garth Tander, ladies and gentlemen,
25:29put some money on him.
25:29He's going very strongly in 2000.
25:32Right now, I call on Ross Brady,
25:33the motorsport manager for Shell,
25:34to make the presentation to our overall winner today.
25:36And isn't he putting together a strong championship?
25:38Mark Scaife!
25:43Where are you going to put all that stuff?
25:46Well done, Scaifey.
25:47We were saying before,
25:48you have finished no worse than second
25:49in the opening five rounds.
25:51That is a way to build a very strong campaign.
25:54Well, obviously, you know,
25:55our consistency last year wasn't that good.
25:56We had a couple of really bad rounds
25:57and we thought this weekend
25:59might have been a bit of a bogey round for us.
26:01We qualified 16th and run 5th last year.
26:03So the guy's done a great job.
26:04The cars are much better.
26:05We've tested at Winton
26:06and, I mean, really, hopefully,
26:08if Ipswich and Winton aren't still those drama tracks,
26:12we'll be half a chance.
26:13And just quickly, Canberra, the GMC 400,
26:15what a great meeting that's going to be.
26:16Well, we're looking forward to it.
26:17I think everybody in Pitt Lane is,
26:18but, I mean, if it has the sort of atmosphere of this place,
26:21this is like Adelaide.
26:22I mean, you know,
26:23hats off to everyone here
26:24that have come out and supported us.
26:26And certainly, you know,
26:27Hidden Valley have done a fantastic job for the weekend.
26:29Put your hands together, folks.
26:30The winner of round five,
26:31Mark Scaife,
26:32Holden Racing Team Collardule.
26:35The Holden Racing Team's
26:36first round victory here at the top end
26:38and the Scaife Steamroller continues.
26:41He's on top of the championship points,
26:42596.
26:44As Mark said,
26:4512 clear of Garb Tander,
26:46who sits in second place.
26:47Glenn Seaton,
26:48courtesy of his efforts here today,
26:50has moved up into third place.
26:51Paul Radisic had a dismal day,
26:53dropping to fourth.
26:54And as we go back further through the order,
26:56Craig Baird moving up.
26:57John Bauer,
26:57a rotten day.
26:58Qualified third,
26:59but is now back in 12th
27:00in terms of the championship standings.
27:02Well, Barry Sheen,
27:03what an absolutely amazing day
27:04in terms of the carnage we saw on the track.
27:07Incredible.
27:07You've got to hand it to Tander,
27:08you know.
27:09He's the only guy that consistently
27:10can take it to HRT, guys.
27:12And it's like a sort of David and Goliath,
27:14isn't it?
27:15Gary Rogers Motorsport
27:16against the HRT.
27:17But great, great, great weekends racing
27:20and fantastic support up here from everybody.
27:23Well, plenty more racing coming your way
27:24right here on your home of motorsport.
27:26And in fact,
27:27it starts tonight,
27:27coming up round five
27:29of the World Superbike Championship.
27:30Catch Lee Diffie for that one.
27:32Coming to you from Monza
27:33and check your local guys,
27:34of course,
27:34for the times there.
27:35The next round of the Kart World Series,
27:37it's in fact the rerun
27:38of round two
27:39from Nazareth in Pennsylvania,
27:41which was actually snowed out
27:42earlier this year.
27:44And then we're off
27:44to the Shell Championship Series
27:46round six,
27:47the GMC 400 in Canberra.
27:49That is going to be a ripper.
27:50Make sure you tune in for that one
27:52and possibly even get there as well.
27:53On behalf of all of our hard-working team
27:55here at the top end
27:56who've sweated it out today,
27:57big thanks to them
27:58and bye for now.
28:00There's time going.
28:01There must be something on the road.
28:06Oh!
28:08Oh!
28:08Oh!
28:08Oh!
28:09Oh, my goodness.
28:39The tyre's got problems
28:42for the fuel as well.
28:43Oh!
28:43Oh!
28:43There's been a blame!
28:44There's a blame here!
28:49Oh!
