00:00Something for everybody here at Surfers Paradise, Honda Indy 300, the beach, the sun, there's
00:10even been water skiing displays, they have made it an entertainment package like no other
00:15and right now on track, the V8 supercars can Ford make it a clean sweep or can Holden,
00:20which has dominated much of the Shell Championship Series, come back and make some sort of statement
00:24here on these heated streets. Greg Russ, Mark Osler, Barry Sheen.
00:28Well, Woodsy, it's funny that you say that because although Holden have made some big statements
00:33in terms of the championship in recent time, it's Ford that have dominated on the streets of the Gold Coast,
00:3811 of the past 13 races have been won by the Blue Oval. They dominated in 98, 99 and again this year
00:46with Paul Radisic who will start from pole position courtesy of the fact that he has won both races here this weekend so far.
00:51Russell Ingle alongside him on the front row, Lowndes and Scaife, row 2, Bargwana and Mark Larkham, row 3,
00:57Steve Johnson and Tony Longhurst on row 4.
01:00If you look down the right hand side of the McDonald starting grid, you'll see where they qualified
01:05and then the second column is where they finished in race 2.
01:08And as each grid is determined by the results of the previous race, you'll get an idea of how they've gone throughout the weekend.
01:14For instance, Craig Baird qualified 17th, finished 11th, now 9th for the final race.
01:21Steve Reid all the way down to Cameron Mccomble starting at 17.
01:25We're not having the best of weekends, qualified 21st, 24th there in race 2.
01:29He starts alongside Romano for the through the field.
01:32Rodney Crick alongside Brad Jones who had some big dramas yesterday.
01:35Was running in the top 10 until an unfortunate crash.
01:37Put him to the back of the grid.
01:39Perkins and Christian D'Agost and Paul Wheel at the rear.
01:43And Garth Tanner joining us as a special guest in commentary.
01:46He's a non-starter in this one as well after an unfortunate crash in qualifying, Garth.
01:49Yeah, made a small error in qualifying on the first lap and played at the ultimate price.
01:54We've had to put it in the truck and take it home and get ready for Bathurst.
01:57Funny thing about this place isn't it Garth, you make a small mistake and you play a big penalty.
02:01Well that's right, especially with these street races with the concrete walls.
02:05There is no margin for error and the smallest of mistakes, you can definitely put a sour note to your weekend.
02:12The interesting thing from this weekend, although the forwards have been dominant, Craig Lowndes has been the fastest man.
02:17He set a new lap record in race one, a 1.54.10.
02:23And then in race two yesterday, he brought that down by another hundredth of a second.
02:30He was really having a good go though, wasn't he Garth?
02:33So yeah, he's been absolutely charging and he just has not been able to win the starts.
02:37As we've seen in V8 supercar racing, so many times starting positions are critical
02:42because the cars are so evenly matched it makes it very, very difficult to overtake.
02:46Paul Radicic, the winningest driver on the streets of the Gold Coast.
02:51He's won five, the last five races in fact here.
02:55John Bauer has four victories to his name.
02:59Can the Rat make it three from three here this weekend just as he did in 1999?
03:05Well, we saw in race one, Russell Ingle won the start from pole position, but Radicic squeezed him out halfway through lap one.
03:12And then it's put him in a position where he's never been headed.
03:15So if Ingle can win the start, that big rush down to Honda Chicane.
03:20It's going to be a very wide hook.
03:22It's old and I think if Russell wins the start.
03:24Should be a ripper.
03:25Ten laps the distance.
03:26The FAI Insurance V8 Challenge.
03:28Rebs rising on the V8s.
03:30Who will get the launch?
03:31Oh, that creep.
03:32Away we go.
03:33Radicic storms off the line.
03:35Ingle tries to stay with him.
03:37Around about half a car length in it at the moment.
03:39The HRT duo on the battle, if you like, for third and fourth.
03:44How quick is that Falcon off the start?
03:46Looks like Russell Ingle was giving him a reasonable run for his money.
03:49Bargwiner has gotten through on Craig Lowndes.
03:52So Jason Bargwiner up into fourth position at the moment.
03:54The order.
03:55The Rat.
03:56Russell Ingle.
03:57Mark Scaife in third.
03:58Look at them as they sweep through for the first time to the Honda Chicane.
04:03Out of Energec Chicane.
04:04Thundering down toward Queensland.
04:06Turn three with the ANA Hotel.
04:08Overlooks the circuit.
04:09Arndt under brakes.
04:10Swing into the short straight that links these two corners.
04:13Heading toward the Esplanade.
04:14Telstra turn four.
04:15Here they go.
04:16Paul Radicic.
04:17Big, steep train.
04:19Rodney Faulkner going around the inside of John Faulkner.
04:23Hopefully they came out of there cleaning.
04:25Look at this.
04:26Steven Johnson trying to run down the inside of the Mitre 10.
04:29Russell Ingle has a look outside.
04:31Builds up the mirrors of Paul Radicic's car, but Radicic in control.
04:35And Jason Bargwana splitting the whole racing team duo.
04:39Although Rodney Faulkner did manage to get around.
04:44John Faulkner.
04:45At one of ten here on the streets of Surface Paradise.
04:48And again it's Paul Radicic who leaves the way.
04:50Fantastic.
04:51Fantastic shot that isn't it Rusty looking up the beach.
04:54Cars right down the Esplanade.
04:56Run alongside the sands.
04:58And give us a day at Surface Paradise.
05:01The wind's dropped.
05:02The sun's out.
05:03Beautiful day for motor racing.
05:04Look at Blount's charging as well.
05:06He's all over the back of Jason Bargwana.
05:08It does look like Jase is holding him up a little bit.
05:12Yeah I think Bargz is just out there to try and finish three races in a race in a week.
05:16And he's had so much bad luck this year.
05:19Just to finish three will be an achievement this weekend.
05:21Fantastic start by Jason Bargwana.
05:23As Paul Radicic leads the pack through Ponder.
05:26Back onto the main straight.
05:29Look at the thundering down here.
05:32Speed's well in excess.
05:33200kmh as they sweep past the pits.
05:36Paul Radicic in control.
05:37Russell Engel in second.
05:38Mark Scaife.
05:39Jason Bargwana.
05:40Craig Lowndes.
05:41Steven Johnson.
05:42Mark Larkham.
05:43That's Tony Longhurst.
05:44Craig Bannon.
05:45Neil Crompton.
05:46Squeezed inside Steve Reid on their first lap.
05:47He rounds out the top ten.
05:48Johnson's definitely having a better run than that car Radicic is.
05:52Certainly is.
05:53He's really come on strong here this weekend.
05:55I think it left a few people sort of wondering.
05:59Where was the real Steven Johnson?
06:01He hasn't had a good year.
06:02Poor old Steven.
06:03But he's really stepped up to the point.
06:04Oh Larry.
06:05Oh Larry.
06:06Is this man having a shocker this weekend?
06:09He's not exactly having the best of years is he really?
06:12When you think the couple of terrible starts he had.
06:15One of them calls that prang at Orem Park.
06:18And then he's not having the best of times there Larry at the moment.
06:22Early retirement yesterday.
06:24Steven Johnson we hear.
06:25The officials are watching.
06:26Young Steven.
06:27Warning him about curb hopping once again.
06:29Yellow flags waving.
06:30Larry Perkins is stranded down there at the Honda Chicane.
06:33Keep in mind Mark.
06:34That is the car that he's going to camp playing at Mount Panorama Bathurst.
06:37With Russell Ingle as Craig Lowndes has gotten around.
06:40Jason Barguana barks now under siege from Steven Johnson as well.
06:43Who is on a real charge in the second of the Shell Helix Fords.
06:46Who's going to give?
06:47Barguana muscles his way through in the Foster Chicane.
06:50Well he might just be looking for a finish gap there.
06:52That would be certainly fighting hard.
06:54Yeah.
06:55He won't give up.
06:56That's for sure.
06:57Don't worry about that.
06:58He'll be a pretty wide valve length Commodore.
06:59That's for sure.
07:00Great little driver Jason Barguana.
07:0228 years of age.
07:03Originally from Como in New South Wales.
07:05Now bases himself in Melbourne.
07:07Let's have a look at the replay here.
07:08Oh Larry.
07:09What have you done?
07:10I think he's run into the back of someone there.
07:12Yeah.
07:13That's what he looks like.
07:14Brad Jones taking some evasive action there as well.
07:17Let's have a look here from John Bowers Caterbilla Ford.
07:20Garth.
07:21He looks like he's locked.
07:23He's in the wall.
07:24He's got the wheels up.
07:26I think he might have.
07:27He looked like he might have locked the rear brake again.
07:29And it's just set the car.
07:30Unsettled the car.
07:31And pushed it into the wall.
07:33Steven Johnson now trying to close the gap to his mercurial teammate.
07:38The Flying Kiwi Paul Radisic.
07:40It really has been the hard charger for Ford.
07:43And he's setting the streets of light at Surface Paradise.
07:46Perfect score so far.
07:48Three wins from three starts last year.
07:50He's taken two from three so far this year.
07:52Can he make it six from six?
07:54Lowndes looks like he's flying at the moment.
07:56Trying to close the gap to teammate Mark Skate.
07:58He's certainly been able to pull clear of Jason Bargwana.
08:01So I'd say your call about him.
08:03Mark's possibly holding him up.
08:04May have been spot on.
08:05Yeah.
08:06It does look a bit like that.
08:07And just look at the angle.
08:08He's definitely all over the back of Radisic now.
08:10Yeah.
08:11And Paul's off sprinting away like it was in the first place.
08:14Yeah, exactly.
08:15Now I know you have a tyre restriction here Garth.
08:17Could that be the fact that Shell Ford now is getting a little bit...
08:21Yeah, I think so.
08:22I think if this race goes the distance without a safety car,
08:25Russell will make it pretty hard for Paul in the race.
08:27Looks like the Shell car uses its tyres a little bit more than what Russell's is.
08:30And being the third race of the weekend, the tyres are fairly average anyway.
08:33So it'll be interesting come the end of the race.
08:35Rodney Forbes and Steve Reid in amongst the think of things here.
08:39As they battle the way.
08:41There's no doubt about it.
08:42Rodney Forbes doesn't find getting in those knuckle dusters.
08:45Fighting car back in the pack.
08:47But even more fights than Sonny Lister this year anyway.
08:49John Bauer of the Caterpillar Ford had to retire from yesterday's race.
08:54That overheating engine.
08:55And now he's back in action.
08:57Having to fight his way through from the back of the pack.
09:01Car 600, the older EL model Falcon.
09:04The boys had this one put away.
09:06Particularly for this battle around the streets of service.
09:09They only have one AU Falcon.
09:10That's the one they want to keep fresh for Mount Panorama in four weeks' time.
09:14John will team up with Jimmy Richards at Mount Panorama
09:18as he did it recently at the Queensland 500.
09:21Freight train just ahead of them as they lock the brakes heading in towards the Honda hairpin.
09:26Honda hairpin.
09:27They swing then onto the Gold Coast Highway along Main Straight.
09:30Here's what's happening up in front of the first chicane.
09:32It's the Rat.
09:33Leading for Russell Ingle.
09:34Mark Scaife in third.
09:35There's that gap back to Craig Lowndes.
09:37Lowndes is starting to close on this trio.
09:39And Russell is like a magnet all over the back of Paul Radisic.
09:42I think tyres are now coming into play.
09:44The Rat has not been able to sprint away as he has in the previous two races.
09:47This old Commodore starting to climb all over the back of him.
09:49He's going to have to fight a defensive role here.
09:51It fits bad now.
09:53It's only four laps into a ten lap race.
09:55By the time we get another couple of laps under our belt, we should be seeing a bit of fun.
10:00Oil flags out there.
10:01I'm sure some of them slippery.
10:04Lowndes is on a charge.
10:06He's done a 53-7, which is, what, four or five tenths quicker than the lap record he set yesterday.
10:12So the boy is coming.
10:14He's coming fast.
10:15Look at the gap there.
10:16The two Red Barons, Mark Scaife and Craig Lowndes.
10:18Big gap now.
10:19Back to Jason Bargwana.
10:20Stephen Johnson breathing down his neck.
10:22Mark Larkham, Tony Longhurst and Craig Baird.
10:25See who's closing in on the back of that pack of forwards too, Mark.
10:28Neil Crompton, there you can see him.
10:30It's forward sitting there.
10:32It certainly is.
10:34Crompton is sitting in tenth position, bared ahead of him in ninth.
10:38Crompton the sole representative for Ford Tickford Racing this weekend after a horrific crash in testing for his team mate and team leader, Glenn Seaton at Phillip Island.
10:47Seaton had to sit out both Sandown and this battle here.
10:51Hopefully he'll be fit for the FAI 1000.
10:54Mark Larkham carrying our in-car Mitre 10 camera.
10:57Looks like hard work around here, Garth Tanner.
11:00It is, and it's quite a warm day here today, and with not too much breeze.
11:05The breeze has dropped from yesterday, so it'll be pretty stagnant inside the canyon, concrete canyon.
11:09So the boys will be earning their keep, that's for sure.
11:12It's much nicer up here in the air conditioning.
11:14Mark Larkham's car looks in mint condition despite being the, I guess, innocent victim in that altercation yesterday when they were all concertinaed up.
11:22Big crash yesterday which took out both the Kmart Commodores, Greg Murphy and Stephen Richards.
11:27And also young Stephen Ellery who did so well last weekend.
11:30This is the FAI Insurance V8 Supercar Challenge on the streets of Surface Paradise.
11:35The rat leading from Russell England.
11:37Mark Scaife more on the other side of this.
11:39Trust you're enjoying all of the action here on the streets of Surface Paradise on your home of motorsport.
11:54This is our coverage of the Honda Indy for 2000, and this is the FAI V8 Supercar Challenge.
12:00And at the moment, the rat leads the way for Russell England.
12:04This is now a four-way freight train.
12:06Scaife in third position, and Lowndes is right on the tail of this lot.
12:09Have a look at what happened during the break.
12:11This is Stephen Johnson giving up the chase of Marguana.
12:16We thought it would have to happen.
12:18I wonder what happened because those guys lost four seconds in that lap to Leonzi.
12:22Yeah, big jump.
12:23Let's have a look at this from the Mitre 10 camera.
12:25Mark Larkham's view of what happened.
12:27Mark, I read it beautifully, didn't he?
12:28Well, he just went around the conventional route.
12:31Stephen Johnson got hung up on the grass.
12:34Stephen's actually just pulled into the pits as well, so...
12:37Yeah, it looks like he damaged something there.
12:38He was slow coming away from that incident, so...
12:41Maybe a problem with the shell number 17 Falcon.
12:44There he is.
12:46So Junior Johnson giving it everything in Dad's car.
12:50A bit of damage there, and I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
12:54He's decided to park it for the day.
12:57I think that front stuff's actually yesterday.
13:03So a rotten way for Stephen to end the weekend
13:06that was certainly looking good for him.
13:08He's shown a marked improvement here.
13:10This is his teammate with three laps remaining.
13:12The Rat on course to take victory at number 6 on the streets of the Gold Coast.
13:17Three here, and three last season.
13:19Amazing squirt by Craig Lowster.
13:21Charging up to this leading trio.
13:24He's now dropped back a little bit.
13:26Sensational time on the 93.
13:28Scaife's thing looks like the old tyres are really getting there.
13:31Yeah, I think with Craig also, he had a red hot gun.
13:34Oh!
13:35Scaife!
13:36I was going to say, Scaife was so out of shape before.
13:38Now, is he going to avoid getting hit there?
13:40The yellow flags will be waving vigorously.
13:42Hopefully everyone can see him on the other side of the chicane.
13:44He'd be sitting there gritting his teeth, bro.
13:46I can't think.
13:47Well, he clipped the wall yesterday as well.
13:49Yeah.
13:50So, it just goes to show how you really have to thread the needle so fine through these chicanes.
13:57I think him and Lowndes' tyres look like they're really...
14:00Yeah.
14:01They're having a fairly red hot go to have a go at a race.
14:03Oh, that's too good.
14:04So, you reckon everyone's tyres are looking pretty second-hand?
14:09Well, yeah.
14:10By the looks of things, either the tyres look second-hand or they put a sheet station up for this race.
14:16Well, look at this now.
14:17The Enforcer really closing the gap.
14:19He's all over the back of the shelf.
14:20AD Falcon.
14:21He really wants a victory on the streets here to break this five-race winning streak.
14:26By Paul Radisic.
14:27Look at the attack.
14:29Forward versus Holden.
14:30And if you can lay your money on anything, you can lay your money that Russell's going to have a go somewhere.
14:35Keep in mind, there are only two Holden drivers who have ever won on the streets of Surfers Paradise.
14:39Russell Ingle is one of them.
14:40In fact, he was the last man to do it in race two in 1997.
14:44And prior to that, he was Greg Murphy.
14:46Yeah, he actually looked like he was a tad offline on the way into the corner.
14:50And then he's just ended up just kissing the tyre barrier.
14:53And once you hit those tyres, it just sucks you in and will turn you around.
14:56Oof.
14:57Oh, look.
15:00How do you reckon Geoff Gretchen's feeling the food?
15:02Yeah.
15:03All right, park it, boys.
15:05Got Bathurst coming up.
15:07Oh!
15:08Oh!
15:09Side by side.
15:10Look at this.
15:11Russell Ingle.
15:12That's a good one away.
15:13Door handle, a door handle.
15:14There you go.
15:15Russell Ingle's got him.
15:16Unbelievable move by the Enforcer.
15:18The crowd goes mad.
15:19And Russell Ingle forges through the lead into the NBA Insurance V8 Challenge.
15:24Paul Radisic under siege.
15:25Two laps remaining in this one.
15:28Oh, boy.
15:29Either Radisic made a...
15:31Must have made a bit of a muck up on the front end on that double left hander.
15:37Or...
15:38Looks like Paul's slowing down quite a bit.
15:40Well, the Enforcer has just pumped up, isn't he?
15:42He's gotten around the rat and on course now to take his second race win ever.
15:46On the streets of surface paradise, Radisic unable to do anything about it.
15:50Ingle definitely was on a mission.
15:52And HRT actually helped Russell out there by getting involved with each other.
15:55They got him out of his rear vision mirrors and he could just solely concentrate on getting
15:59past the rat.
16:00And he's done it with ease.
16:01And half a second faster on that last lap.
16:03And he's clearing out.
16:05So Radisic now more in defensive mode as he tries to hold on to second position.
16:12Brilliant move by Russell Ingle around the outside of that sweeper.
16:15You can see him adjusting the power's anti-roll bars as he drives around.
16:19So he's probably just trying to save those tyres I guess, Garth, is he?
16:22Well, he may have broken a roll bar or something like that.
16:25You see when he's throwing it over the kerbs there.
16:27The cars aren't totally indestructible.
16:29And if you break a roll bar, you just set it on the full hard setting on the roll bar
16:33adjusted inside the cabin.
16:34And then just try and get the car home.
16:36So, just to watch the Enforcer disappearing off into the distance.
16:40Can't fight him.
16:42Castrol Commodore has got too much speed.
16:45The Horton fans around the track have gone mad.
16:47They've seen this forward domination.
16:49Listen to them cheer.
16:50Oh, look.
16:51It's an attack.
16:52It's an escape.
16:53Nick, lifting his way back to pit lane after clouding the wall before.
16:56There will be one lap to go for Russell Ingle.
16:59You take the third victory for Holden ever on the streets of surface paradise.
17:03He brings the Castrol Commodore over the line to commence that final lap.
17:08Let's take another look.
17:09Now this is at the back of the rat's car.
17:13Just talk us through this car.
17:14Yeah.
17:15We'll just have to wait and see what happens here.
17:17This is out of the Honda hairpin.
17:18Ow!
17:19He's just got her up the inside and got on the power a tad earlier.
17:24And then once he's positioned himself on the inside for turn one, there's not much that
17:27the rat could do about it.
17:28That's not an easy move, is it, around the outside of that corner?
17:32Here they go.
17:33I don't know.
17:34This is what it was like on board.
17:35That's weird.
17:36Did we hear a clonk there or was that my imagination?
17:39In slow-mo, I just think it was the rat changing gears up there.
17:42Look at that.
17:43They were just side by side for so long.
17:45Drag race around that fast right-hander.
17:48Ingle forcing his way through.
17:50So deep under brakes as he did in race one.
17:54So it's the enforcer from the rat in the background there.
17:58You can see Craig Lowndes.
17:59Jason Barguana sits back in fourth.
18:01Larkham fifth.
18:02Longhurst sixth.
18:03Neil Crompton has moved up into seventh position.
18:06Craig Baird eighth.
