00:00Hey, it's Justin, live from the CMA Awards, with Chris Lane, who already has a bone to pick with me.
00:08I've got a big bone to pick with you.
00:10And that is?
00:11I'm taking out my Braves.
00:13I'm sorry.
00:14That was the most painful thing I've ever been a part of.
00:17Were you rooting for the Diamondbacks then, after they beat the Phillies?
00:20To be completely honest with you, yes, but at the same time, I didn't watch one game after we got eliminated from the playoffs.
00:26I was so hurt.
00:28Neither did I.
00:29Well, I went to the Phillies games.
00:30I've been to, like, five Phillies playoff games, and they've lost every one, so I've got to stop going.
00:35Why couldn't you have been at one of the Braves games?
00:39I'm going to call you next year.
00:40I will go.
00:40Take a view of the game.
00:42All right, so new EPs out, five songs.
00:45You co-wrote on four of them.
00:47Was that, like, a goal at the beginning?
00:48Like, hey, I want to write these songs.
00:50Well, I mean, yeah, you always try to write your songs, but I think, for me, it was kind of just placing priority on songwriting.
00:57For the first time in my career.
00:59Yeah.
00:59And I say that as I did not prioritize songwriting before, but I just spent so many days out touring.
01:07You know, every artist kind of does it differently.
01:08Some start as songwriters and then morph into the artists.
01:11For me, I came to town when I first got my record deal.
01:13I was already touring a lot, and I just continuously, I was lucky enough to get, to be a part of a tour every single year.
01:22So I felt like it was important for me to be out in front of fans as often as possible, and sometimes it's hard to write all of your songs that way.
01:30The beautiful part about Nashville is we have the best songwriters in the world, so I was getting pitched some great songs.
01:35But for the first time in my career, I took a step back from touring so much, and it gave me that opportunity to write, and I feel like these are some of the better songs in my career.
01:45Being on the road, you're a new dad.
01:47Are you a FaceTimer?
01:48Are you FaceTiming kids all the time?
01:49I mean, all day long.
01:51All day long.
01:52Is it weird for them?
01:53You're like, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad.
01:55Yeah, my two-year-old is just now, he finally is starting to understand, like, he sees when I have my bag packed, he's always like, daddy's going to work.
02:04Okay.
02:06And I'm like, what does daddy do for work?
02:07He was like, sing and play guitar.
02:11So I don't know if he truly gets it, but yeah.
02:13One day he will.
02:14He's sweet.
02:14He's sweet.
02:14When you're home, favorite thing to do with the kids?
02:17Play golf.
02:18Really?
02:19Yes.
02:19I know he's only two, but he can hit it.
02:21That's when he got startled, though.
02:22Yeah, he can hit it.
02:23Yeah.
02:23And I'm a little dramatic in the sense of I go crazy even if he barely touches it because I want him to have that recognition of that feeling that he gets when he hears me screaming of joy.
02:36And teach him frustration at a young age because golf is an unforgiving game.
02:40It's hard.
02:41Chris Lane, it was awesome to see you.
02:43I appreciate you stopping by.
02:44Thank you, man.
