00:00But the main reason we are here is because today we are picking up the legendary Toyota Celica GT4 Carlos Sainz edition.
00:10Oh yes, that's very, very special.
00:13Very special.
00:16This all-wheel-drive turbocharged 205bhp Japanese rocket is the road-going homologation version of the Celica
00:26that propelled Spanish supremo Carlos Sainz Senior to championship glory in 1992.
00:35Packed with specialist rally engineering tweaks that you won't find on a run-of-the-mill GT4,
00:42Toyota only produced 5,000 of this very special edition,
00:47which makes it a rarity reserved for only the most dedicated of petrolheads.
00:56Right, this car is owned by a guy called Michael who absolutely loves this car.
01:00Right, okay.
01:01We're going to meet Alison and Jackie, right?
01:02Yeah, okay.
01:03Michael's sister and wife.
01:04We'll find out more about Michael's story, but this car is one that I haven't seen for a long, long time.
01:09You're very excited, aren't you?
01:10I'm very excited.
01:11I am, I am, because it's a real treat. This is finding a real gem in the world of cars.
01:17Just remember though, it's over 30 years old, and it might be looking just a little bit tired.
01:23Right, hold on. What's Nesh mean again?
01:31Nesh means it's cold.
01:33Nesh.
01:34It's right Nesh up here, up and off.
01:35It's right Nesh Danua's.
01:36Danua's.
01:37Exactly.
01:38Right, okay, right, okay.
01:39Look, there it is, there it is.
01:40Oh, come on.
01:41I mean, Evan, that is the one.
01:44I see, look, I've got to do this now, because otherwise I'm going to forget everything.
01:47You've got it in your head?
01:48Yeah, I've got it in my head.
01:49Right.
01:50Jackie, Alison, hello, how are you doing?
01:52Hi, I'm Madison.
01:53Before we go any further, come out, come out.
01:55Fuzz has got something he'd like to say to you, just to make himself fit in.
01:58Go on, Fuzz.
01:59Hello.
02:00Hello.
02:01Hello.
02:02Heyo.
02:03Heyo.
02:04All right, I'm Fuzz.
02:05It's right Nesh Danua's.
02:07Yeah, it's very Nesh.
02:09Yeah.
02:10Yeah.
02:11Non-Sheffield lad, trying to fit in Sheffield lad.
02:13Yeah.
02:14Where is Michael?
02:15He's out for the day with his son.
02:16Okay.
02:17Good.
02:18So we're in the clear, so let's get this man on it.
02:19Right.
02:20Let's go and have a chat about Michael, shall we?
02:24Right, come on, let's have a look and see what we've got here.
02:28Paintwork, a little bit jaded here, and non-standard wheels.
02:36Okay.
02:37Couple of little dents here on the side of the door, but then this little bit of trim.
02:44Pushing out, I can see some moss at the top.
02:46Now moss is a great friend of rust.
02:49Rust and moss, I like that.
02:51They absolutely love each other.
02:53There are the telltale signs of lots and lots of water collecting at the bottom here.
03:01The bumper at the rear looks like it perhaps had some sort of respite sometime, but definitely
03:08it's just cracking away.
03:13There's one thing that I know about this car, and that is that it's a runner.
03:17But at nearly 100,000 miles, it's starting to be at that sort of midlife point.
03:26When a person goes to a doctor, and the doctor goes, yeah, yeah, we'll just have a look.
03:30Ooh, bit wrong there.
03:32That's a bit high.
03:33That's a bit low.
03:34All of those kinds of things.
03:36That's where this car is at.
03:42Has Michael always been a car guy?
03:44Yeah, yeah, I think he has.
03:47Do you know what you've got out there?
03:49I know it's a special car, and I know it's his pride and joy.
03:53Is it?
03:54How does he treat it?
03:55He actually treats it like it's made out of gold to me, and he does.
03:59He loves to polish it when he can.
04:01When he got it, what do you remember of when he got it?
04:03I think he spent about a good two or three weeks constantly each day going out to that car.
04:08Coming in like an excited boygo?
04:10Oh, absolutely.
04:11It was like, honestly, he kept saying, I can't believe I've got a car last thing.
04:15He just wants to make that car 100%.
04:19Now, here we have an engine bay jam-packed with goodies.
04:30At least it was jam-packed with goodies in the early 1990s.
04:34Right at the front is this whopping great turbocharger.
04:38That is part of this car's magic.
04:42So that is a great thing, but turbochargers where everything is starting to feel its age.
04:51I'm going to try starting it.
04:53Let's see what happens.
04:55It's alive!
05:02That's great.
05:03And that's a rare thing for car SOS.
05:06But how well does it drive?
05:08How does it behave once it gets warm?
05:11And looking at it, it looks pretty tired in there.
05:15I think we're still going to have to do a lot of work to it,
05:18but at least it's nice that we won't have to push it into the workshop.
05:26What's happened in Michael's life to mean that a very rare car sitting out there is left in that condition?
05:34In his early 50s, they identified that he got two leaking valves.
05:39Two leaking valves in the heart?
05:40Yeah.
05:41He replaced the mitral valve with a metal valve that was in place for about five years until last year.
05:50He got an infection.
05:56It was just brewing in his body for about a few months.
06:00And then it started then attacking his metal valve.
06:04I can't even begin to imagine what you guys must be going through.
06:07It's been, honestly, it's been awful.
06:09And then he said, before I die, can I marry her?
06:12Then he says, can we have something special for this honeymoon?
06:15Because you deserve it, Alison.
06:17So he bought the crews.
06:19That's when I found out that he wouldn't ensure Michael.
06:23I'd already paid for the crews in full.
06:25I know where this is going.
06:26I lost a lot of money.
06:28What is the future for Michael at the moment in terms of treatment?
06:32Next week, it goes for the keyhole.
06:35Right.
06:36Then they will try and plug the leaks in his heart.
06:39If it's not successful, then they will have to then consider the full open heart surgery.
06:48Alison, it's imperative we get this car done as soon as possible, isn't it?
06:52It is.
06:53Yeah.
06:54To me, it's a day close to Michael not being here.
07:06Right, Fuzzbot.
07:07Yeah?
07:08Michael is very unwell.
07:09Understood.
07:10We've got to turn this car around to the best of our abilities and quickly.
07:20Oh, sorry.
07:21Horn works.
07:22With the clock already ticking, there's not a moment to waste.
07:29That'll do.
07:30Can you not get out?
07:31No.
07:32The boys need to quickly smuggle the Celica into the covered trailer.
07:36What about climb out of the boot?
07:38Hold on a minute.
07:39And out of sight of any nosy neighbours, so it can be sent on ahead to the workshop.
07:43Oh, God.
07:45Oh, God.
07:46Oh, God.
07:48Right, come on.
07:49Let's get out of it.
07:50We've got work to be doing.
07:51Leaving them to contemplate the challenges of renovating a super-rare three-decade-old road-going rally car.
07:59What makes this car so special is that it is a homologation car.
08:04Meaning that, in order to compete in World Rally Championship, Toyota had to mass-produce these cars on the scale of 5,000.
08:11Now, that may sound like a lot, but no, it's not a lot at all.
08:14Meaning that, if there are any bits that don't work or that are missing, we are in grave, deepest, darkest dog twaddle.
08:20OK, now I see what you're getting at.
08:26On the plus side, at least it runs.
08:29How bad can it be?
08:32Fuzzbots?
08:33Yeah?
08:34This car presents us with what I might consider a very, very unique opportunity.
08:39What do you mean?
08:40This car is tax-tested and MOT.
08:44I know it's got major problems, but just hit me out first.
08:47No.
08:48Neither of us have ever driven one of these cars, and legally we can drive it for the first time since the beginning of the old car sausage.
08:53Get it out on the road.
08:54Are you listening?
08:55No.
08:56No, no.
08:57No.
08:58I've said my bit.
08:59I'm going.
09:00It's up to you.
09:01You want to get in it and join me in it?
09:02No.
09:03Right.
09:04I'm leaving.
09:05Right.
09:06Wait there.
09:07I'm going to keep an eye on you.
09:14So, in a car SOS first, the boys had the opportunity to take Michael's pride and joy for a spin,
09:24to work out what's really wrong with this tired old Toyota.
09:29There's testing, and there's just driving, so what I want you to do is test it, okay?
09:36Right, okay.
09:37So, first things first, I can tell you already that there's a problem with the gearbox.
09:41Are you sure?
09:43Yeah.
09:44And what it's going to take to give it a new lease of life.
09:48There's play in the steering wheel.
09:49Yeah.
09:50The temperature gauge is already hot.
09:52You know what this car is?
09:55What?
09:56It's just like you.
09:57What do you mean?
09:58Well, from the outside it looks alright, but on the inside it's knackered.
10:01Oh, great.
10:02Yeah, yeah.
10:03That's really nice.
10:04It might just about run, but beneath its passable exterior, it turns out this Celica is in much worse shape than anyone could have imagined.
10:16It's going to stall.
10:17Yeah.
10:18Right, okay.
10:19So we've got a problem.
10:20That we have actually...
10:21We haven't just got it.
10:22We've got major problems.
10:23Yes, exactly.
10:24The engine's knackered.
10:25The steering's knackered.
10:26The brakes are knackered.
10:27The gearbox, God only knows what's wrong in that gears one and two.
10:29Yes.
10:30And it's overheating.
10:31Got it.
10:33Come on, that's it.
10:36Come on.
10:37Bring it round.
10:38After test driving, Michael's limited edition 1992 Carlos Sainz Celica GT4.
10:45That's it.
10:46You're tighter than that.
10:47Tighter.
10:48It's overheating again.
10:50The gearbox is refusing to go into gear.
10:53The boys have discovered there's a lot more wrong with it than meets the eye.
10:57I'm beginning to get that fear, that dread wash over me, Fuzz, as I look at this car.
11:01So, it's time to get it up onto the ramp and really see what's going on.
11:06Nineties nightmares.
11:15Oh, my word, Fuzz.
11:16Look at the car up there and look at it down here.
11:18It's rotten down.
11:19Look at the state of that lot.
11:20We have got what appears to be leakage going under here.
11:24I mean, look at it.
11:25It's still wet oil.
11:27Yeah.
11:28It's a little more than a wire brush job, isn't it?
11:31So, this is all going to come down.
11:33So, though the car doesn't look bad on the top.
11:36It's a 20-footer, this car.
11:38Stand 20 feet away from it.
11:40Squint your eyes a bit and it looks okay.
11:43But from where we are now, this is terrible.
11:46Look at the struts up there.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Look at the suspension up there.
11:49Absolutely shot.
11:52Right, let's say that we need to replace that suspension arm there.
11:55Yeah, sure.
11:56What do we do?
11:57Order another one.
11:58Okay.
12:01So, my go-to place for parts, bearing in mind this is the Carlos Sainz edition.
12:05Yep.
12:06How different can it possibly be?
12:08Right, there you go.
12:09Have a look through Europe, please.
12:11On sale, currently in Europe, Carlos Sainz.
12:15Celica parts.
12:16How many have we got?
12:18Well, I can't find anything at the moment.
12:23We've got trouble.
12:24We have trouble because look.
12:26Look at the state of it.
12:28This car needs some serious componentry.
12:32If we can't get a hold of any, then how are we going to do this car?
12:38It turns out getting Michael's rare Japanese classic back to him quickly is going to be a battle.
12:45For starters, there's the task of working out which part is leaking oil faster than a North Sea well.
12:53Then there's the gearbox, which has gone from rally inspired to so uninspired that it won't even go into gear.
13:00Finally, Tim faces the prospect of tracking down four rarer than rare suspension legs.
13:08On top of that, the car will need a full undercarriage overhaul and body respray.
13:14So I think our best plan of action is to drop the engine, the gearbox, the transfer box and the front suspension,
13:21separate it all out, get it all cleaned up and then start working on things individually on the bench.
13:29It's going to be much easier like that.
13:33It's crucial that the boys return Michael's car to him as soon as possible.
13:38So, while Fuzz and the team are in a race against the clock to strip it down and find the source of the mysterious oil leak.
13:45Tim is busy finding out what a Toyota based on a rally car should really feel like.
13:58Oh my what!
14:01Oh my what!
14:02Oh my god!
14:03This is a rocket ship!
14:05A 4th year, 50th year.
14:07Oh my word!
14:08By taking a drive in the passenger seat of the competition version of Michael's car.
14:20Yeah, positive news.
14:21Oh my word!
14:22I'm trying to think of other experiences in my life.
14:26This is just pure engineering isn't it?
14:29It is.
14:30Metal on metal.
14:32That's being put through its bases by one of the world's greatest co-drivers and former world rally champion Nicky Grist.
14:39All of the stuff that's available to regular folk to go and buy from a dealership is just a nod to this, isn't it?
14:47Exactly.
14:48It really is.
14:49This is a complete, this is as different as a motorcycle is to a car.
14:55God, if I was with anybody else in the car I'd be terrified, but this is just amazing.
15:01What an experience.
15:04But Tim's not just here for fun.
15:06He needs to understand what being a rare homologation Celica means for how they approach restoring Michael's pride and joy.
15:16My reason for coming here is to understand or get a sort of handle on what homologation is.
15:21I've got a document here just for you Tim.
15:23So all the wheel arches, exactly at the front end, the back end of the car, aesthetically that has to be like a road car.
15:32Right.
15:33It's all down to this and ultimately it should say on page one, actually as it does, there's the picture of Michael's car.
15:39That's right.
15:40And that's your starting point.
15:41That's it, correct.
15:42Basically, once you've got the basic body shape, Toyota Team Europe then, within guidelines, were allowed to modify to a point the engine, the layout of the engine bay, all the suspension parts totally beefed up.
15:57Right.
15:58The rear diff setup is much bigger.
16:01I mean, this thing here, this is pretty specific, isn't it?
16:04It's very detailed.
16:06Even down to the gear ratios we have to use.
16:08So the world's best engineers have worked on this car and actually have also worked on Michael's car.
16:13Because that thing needed to be designed around this to some extent, didn't it?
16:16Yeah, to a point.
16:17So let me get this straight, the only reason that Michael's car, his GT4 colour signs, exists, one of 5,000, is just so this can be made?
16:27Yes.
16:28And perform in the World Rally Championship.
16:30So the value in Michael's car is keeping it as standard as it came out of the Toyota factory.
16:40So you've got 124 in the UK, I think.
16:42Is that it?
16:43That's about it.
16:44And so if we look at it in the world, probably 1,000 left.
16:46Which is nothing.
16:47Nothing really on the scale of it.
16:49So any bits that it left the factory that we still own have to be refurbished and put back on?
16:53Yeah, absolutely.
16:55But as refurbishing parts is a much slower process than buying new ones, it's going to cost the boys time they don't have.
17:05And with Fars no closer to understanding what part of Michael's car is spewing oil, it's a setback they could do without.
17:14So here we have our gearbox and our transfer box.
17:16Now, what is obviously evident here is that we have some oil egress.
17:22Oil's getting out from somewhere and it's plastered all over here.
17:27Now, what I think is the case is that we don't have a gearbox oil leak here because this is where I'd expect to see a nasty gearbox oil leak coming out from the seal that prevents oil coming out along this shaft.
17:41There's nothing there.
17:42We also don't have any leaks around these output seals here.
17:47But what we do have is evidence of oil dripping down here.
17:52What I think is that this is an engine oil leak.
17:55Now, there's a way that we can test this.
17:59I always like to carry a little bit of this stuff in my back pocket.
18:03A little bit of loo roll.
18:04Now, this can help us diagnose where our leaks are coming from.
18:13We can just dab it down here and see what colour oil we've got.
18:19As most gearbox oil is dyed red by the manufacturer and engine oil is black, working out where the leak is coming from should be the straightforward part of the repair.
18:29There we are. We've got a little bit of black, sooty oil.
18:36So that means that almost certainly this is an engine oil leak and we don't have a gearbox or transfer box oil leak.
18:45So we need to turn our focus on that thing there.
18:50Which means a lot of dirty, painstaking work to find out what's gone wrong.
18:59At the car SOS nerve centre, Fuzz is getting oiled up.
19:06So it's wet down here and all the way up here.
19:10But there's no saucy photo shoot planned today.
19:14He's busy tracking down the leak on Michael Celica.
19:18So now we come to top end oil leak, which appears to be coming from where the distributor goes in to the cylinder head.
19:29Now, hopefully there's just a little o-ring under there that has got a little bit hard, dried out, maybe flat, worn, something like that.
19:39There might only be a small leak, but it can cause big problems, attracting dirt into the engine.
19:46And if it were to get hot enough, potentially causing a fire.
19:49So Fuzz needs to get it stopped.
19:52So we've just got a couple of bolts in here.
19:55What I'm going to do is tighten it just slightly.
19:59There we are.
20:03Then loosen it off.
20:05It's a great method for undoing tight bolts.
20:08Just tighten them slightly and then release them.
20:12There's our o-ring right there.
20:18And here is the point at which the leak is actually emanating.
20:24So all we need to do is replace that ring and then everything is OK again.
20:31So it looks like a quick and easy engine oil leak fix for Fuzz.
20:37But for Tim, it's going to be anything but.
20:41I've got a tough one for you here.
20:50I've got a full set of coilovers from a Carlos Sainz GT4 Celica.
20:55It's unique to that car.
20:56It cannot be replaced with new.
20:58Is it possible that it looks like it's on the edge?
21:00So, yeah, I mean, it does look pretty weathered.
21:03Be honest with me.
21:04Put a number on it.
21:05Are we 50-50?
21:06It'll go again or not?
21:0760-40.
21:09What?
21:10In favour of it happening?
21:11Not in your favour.
21:12With so few of these Celicas still on the road, finding four new suspension legs is going to be almost impossible.
21:21So, if they're too far gone to be refurbished...
21:25That's not going to twang off and hit me in the gonads, is it?
21:28Oh, why not?
21:30We might not only be saying sayonara to Tim's crown jewels, but more importantly, this entire project.
21:40This is the most important part, Tim.
21:42Okay.
21:43It's a moment of truth.
21:44I don't want to, like, put it on you too much, but we need this so much, honestly.
21:53What are we looking at here, then?
21:54So, this is, like, the internal of the shock, and it's still wheel on it, so that's a good start.
21:59So, if I can remove this o-ring, we'll be able to see what we're working with.
22:03Right.
22:04So, I mean, this to me, with my limited knowledge of suspension, looks like it's in nice condition.
22:09Yeah.
22:10Do you know what?
22:11It's actually quite good.
22:12Is it?
22:13Yeah.
22:14It's much better I thought it would be.
22:15This is great news, isn't it?
22:16I mean, actually, it's not so bad, right?
22:17We've dodged a bullet here.
22:19As the internals of the leg are in good shape, the suspension's going to live to drive another day.
22:25So, it's on to the shot blaster for the outer casing to remove 30 years of rust and road grime before it's given a coat of protective zinc.
22:35Right, it's time to get your party pants on at showtime.
22:42You should see it changing colour into more silver.
22:45Oh, yeah.
22:46And that is a complete transformation.
22:50And finally, a coat of factory fresh black paint.
22:57Oh, my word, look at that.
22:58The fact that it's going to go again, and the fact that it is original Carlos Sainz-only GT4 Celica gear,
23:04that you cannot get anywhere.
23:06Mate, let's get this, whatever we need to do to it, done, and get it over there and get it rebuilt.
23:13So, that's one vital part done, but there's still a mountain to climb.
23:18The Celica's body shell still needs to go off to have the rust and old, tired paint removed.
23:24And to further pile on the pressure...
23:27Hello, Tim.
23:28How are you?
23:29Good to see you.
23:30Come here.
23:31You all right?
23:32Alison has stopped by to update Tim and files on the outcome of Michael's surgery.
23:37We don't know whether it's actually 100% worked, but we think, fingers crossed, it has worked.
23:44It's got a long way to go.
23:47Having already missed out on his honeymoon through ill health,
23:51the boys are hoping he's going to be well enough for the big reveal.
23:55That is Michael's car. Come here. Come on in here.
23:57What are you thinking?
23:58I'm thinking, where's the engine gone? Where's the seats? Where's everything gone? It doesn't look like Michael's car anymore.
24:11I know that it doesn't look as good as it did when we picked it up,
24:14because, obviously, it was a running, driving car,
24:17but it was right on the brink of needing everything done to it.
24:22So, that's why it looks like it does.
24:25I know it's a shock to see it like this, but this is part of the process.
24:29Do you want to leave? Should we go?
24:31Do you want to go have a cup of tea or coffee?
24:32Yes, please.
24:33Come on, let's go.
24:38Just goes to show that a car can give somebody a really, very strong reaction.
24:47She's really, truly worried about it, because who wouldn't be worried?
24:52With Michael not out of the woods yet, the boys need to pile on the pressure to get his car finished as quickly as possible.
25:04So, it's off to the body shop for the shell, which leaves fuzz to get to the bottom of what's causing the gearbox stubbornness.
25:11Now, what we need to look at initially here is a gear linkage, because Tim said it felt a bit sloppy.
25:24The gear linkage is a precision machine bit of kit that transfers the movement of the gear stick into the gearbox.
25:32So, if components within it are worn even by a fraction, it's going to make selecting the right gear tougher than threading a needle with your toes.
25:41What I have found initially is a tiny little bit of play in the linkage here.
25:47Now, we've got probably one-eighth of an inch or a few millimetres of play between the quadrant and the actual shaft.
25:57Now, it may not seem like a lot, but if you think that there are lots of different linkages in this shaft, suddenly you've got a whole heap of sloppiness set in.
26:10So, first things first, we'll have to get the quadrant off.
26:14Michael's gearbox has covered the equivalent distance of almost four and a half return trips from London to Sydney.
26:22Right, so, there we go.
26:24So, it's no surprise parts are starting to wear.
26:28Now, here we are.
26:30A little steel block, worn out maybe by one or two millimetres at the most.
26:35But that is what has set the slop in place.
26:41Although small, the steel block plays a big role in helping to guide the shift selector smoothly into position when the driver wants to change gear.
26:51So, I think what we'll do is we'll just turn this block here.
26:56Because all of this wear on these faces here has occurred over the past 90,000 to 100,000 miles.
27:05By turning it, we get, hopefully, the same amount of wear out of it again.
27:19Quickly tighten this up.
27:20Rather than that whole arc of play that we had before, now, we've got that tiny little movement, even with the lever extended that much.
27:34Beautiful.
27:35Going to feel like a new car.
27:36And there's more good news.
27:44The rust and rot have been removed from the body shell.
27:48And in their place is a fresh coat of original teal metallic paint.
27:52Time for Fuzz to begin bringing everything back together.
27:57Starting with Tim's ultra-rare suspension struts.
28:03And with Michael's car due to be handed back to him in just a couple of days, it's not a moment too soon.
28:09There we go.
28:10There's the strut in.
28:11All nicely refurbished.
28:12And, of course, we've got all the rest of the components, such as the front wishbone to go in.
28:18And this car is really coming back together now.
28:23It's just one final mechanical hurdle to overcome that involves refurbishing yet another ultra-rare part.
28:33I'm presenting you with something very special here.
28:36A turbo from a Carlos Sainz edition GT4.
28:39The turbo is a major part of what makes Michael's car such a road-going rocket.
28:45It works by drawing exhaust gases in, compressing them, before forcing them into the engine.
28:52Giving that rally-inspired performance.
28:54But after working it socks off for over 90,000 miles, it's gonna be tired.
29:00See all this wet, nasty, carbonised black oil?
29:04Yeah.
29:05Should be totally dry in here.
29:07The amount of wear doesn't justify the amount of oil that's leaking from this turbocharged.
29:11So, that tells me you might have something...
29:14In the engine.
29:15...else up with the engine.
29:17At this late stage, it's the last thing the boys need to hear.
29:21So, whilst Andy presses on with refurbishing the turbo, Tim has some bad news to deliver.
29:29I'm ringing Fuzz right now.
29:31Because he needs to know on the issue what we found.
29:33Right, what do you want?
29:36Right, Fuzz, I've got some news for you, dude.
29:38Good news, all right?
29:39It's the engine that's destroyed the turbo.
29:42That means that we've got a completely...
29:44Yeah.
29:45You know that that is gonna put us back in time, and it's gonna cause a whole heap of work.
29:51So, it turns out it's not just a leaky o-ring after all.
29:59We're looking at a major engine overhaul at the eleventh hour.
30:04Without further ado, what I need to do is start pulling things apart.
30:08Time is running out to get Michael's precious Celica GT4 back to him.
30:17Right, we're all in position here.
30:20Fuzz has resolved the engine issue by replacing the broken piston rings in the engine.
30:27However, before the block can be sent off for a lick of paint, he needs to perform a last-minute emergency cam belt replacement.
30:35We're at the point of no return.
30:38So, I can take the belt off completely.
30:43To ensure this 90s power plant is fit to handle another 90,000 miles on the road.
30:51Rubber cam belts only have a lifespan of around four years, or 40,000 to 100,000 miles.
30:58And on a high-performance engine like this, the worst possible outcome is for it to break.
31:03It can cause catastrophic damage within the engine, with the valves clattering into the pistons and so on and so forth.
31:11We don't want that.
31:13Now, I'm just putting a bit of tension on there as I get the wheel around,
31:19and then I've just got to get the belt around the crankshaft.
31:23And with the new belts in place, the engine just needs a clean-up and fresh lick of paint.
31:31And while that's being taken care of, it's noses to the grindstone for the team.
31:37The wiring harness is threaded back into place, whilst Fuzz blasts away years of old oil leak deposits from the gearbox.
31:4724 hours later, the engine is back, and all that's missing is the final piece of the puzzle.
31:53Right, Mr Fuzzbot, the turbo's back.
31:59The tell-tale turbo that meant that the engine had to be completely rebuilt.
32:03Wow. Which it has been.
32:04Wow, look at it.
32:05Well, I'm glad that you told me about that, because otherwise I might have tried to swerve it.
32:09But take a look at the car, what do you reckon?
32:11It's coming together now, isn't it?
32:13But now the fun starts, because we've got to get the turbo all in place,
32:17then somehow we've got to get this engine up into there and everything connected up again.
32:23So it's a final push to the finish to get Michael's car complete,
32:27starting with mounting the turbo back onto the engine.
32:31Phew. So that's the turbo back, and now we're bolting it onto the engine.
32:37I'm really, really happy that this engine is now pretty much complete,
32:44and we can start getting it back into the car, because time is moving on.
32:49And it's all hands on deck to help raise it into position and connect it back up.
32:56Right, you hold that up.
33:00Let's start popping it up.
33:03OK, you in?
33:04Yes.
33:05We're underneath a different car here, mate.
33:07This looks like we've... it looks new.
33:09Well, it is like a new car.
33:11In fact, I've got an idea.
33:13Come on.
33:14Why don't we lie down and have a look at the underside of the car?
33:18Just take a minute to appreciate it.
33:21Come on.
33:22Here we go.
33:23There we go.
33:25We're never going to get up from here, though, dude.
33:29No, that's all right. I don't need to.
33:31Look at that.
33:33Well, do you know what?
33:35That is a lovely-looking bottom, isn't it?
33:39Thanks, Fuzz.
33:40All right, look, it's all very well lying down here and looking at this, and it's fantastic
33:45looking at it, but how are we going to give it back to Michael?
33:48What's the plan?
33:49Michael.
33:50Sheffield.
33:51Yeah.
33:52Michael.
33:53Yeah.
33:54Michael and Sheffield.
33:55Yes, that's right.
33:56You're absolute beauty.
33:57What?
33:58I've got a plan.
33:59You're absolute genius.
34:00Right, I'm on it.
34:01Okay.
34:02Do you mind if I just have another minute?
34:03Ah, there we are.
34:04Looks great.
34:05Come on, Fuzz.
34:06There's no time to lie down on the job.
34:07This beauty needs to be reunited with its rightful owner.
34:09Look at that.
34:10It looks absolutely fantastic.
34:11But what I want to know is that the beauty needs to be reunited with its rightful owner.
34:16Look at that.
34:17It looks absolutely fantastic.
34:18What I want to know is that the beauty needs to be reunited with its rightful owner.
34:21Look at that.
34:22It looks absolutely fantastic.
34:24But what I want to know is what we're doing in a car dealership.
34:28It's not a brilliant idea.
34:29It's not the top one, is it?
34:30No, it's not the top one.
34:32Unless you pulled something out of the bag, which is in most people's minds utterly impossible.
34:39Tell me.
34:40Who is the number one person on the planet?
34:43If they were here with us now, nobody would suspect they were going to get a car SOS.
34:49Who would that be?
34:50He'll never do it.
34:51He wouldn't do it.
34:52What, contractually not allowed to?
34:53No, he wouldn't do it.
34:54The competition.
34:55Yeah.
34:56He would not do it.
34:58End of.
34:59Simple.
35:00Where's my cup of tea?
35:01Where is my cup?
35:02Mr. Shaw, here's your tea, sir.
35:03I hope I got it to the right temperature.
35:04Thank you very much.
35:06Hey, Fuzz, how you doing, son?
35:07You all right?
35:08Good to see you.
35:09Mike Brewer!
35:10It is the legend.
35:14Welcome to my Emporium, my dealership, and Fuzz.
35:17What a car, man.
35:19You've turned out a gem there.
35:21Wait a minute.
35:22Wait a minute.
35:23Wait a minute.
35:24You don't believe me.
35:25Hold on.
35:26Here's me.
35:27Listen, listen, listen.
35:28This is a blinder.
35:29The plan is simple, right?
35:30So, Michael is coming down here today with his son Daniel.
35:33Yeah.
35:34So we've lined up a cash guy, right?
35:35Yep.
35:36That he's going to come down and bring his dad to have a look round.
35:38He knows his car's my dad.
35:39Mike's there.
35:40Cameras are there.
35:41Mike's doing some adverts for this place.
35:43We're hidden with this car.
35:44The shutter goes up.
35:45The rest is history.
35:46He's genius.
35:48As a familiar face in his Sheffield showroom, Michael won't suspect anything fishy if he
35:54spots Mike.
35:56So, with the hidden cameras rolling and friends and family hidden out of sight, it's time to
36:02put the plan into action.
36:04Yep.
36:05Here they come.
36:06Here they come.
36:07Hello.
36:08How are we doing?
36:09Hi.
36:10Yeah, yeah.
36:11It's Ben.
36:12You all right?
36:13Fantastic.
36:14Nice to meet you.
36:15Hello.
36:16I'm Mike.
36:17Great stuff.
36:18Fantastic.
36:19Ben.
36:20What's up, mate?
36:21Michael's here.
36:22We do pride ourselves on the quality of our cars.
36:23Right then, guys.
36:24So, we'll go and look at the car.
36:25You just excuse, obviously, they are filming today for the better.
36:28Man of the deli.
36:29We do have a fully fitted workshop and great facilities.
36:33I hope that we watch.
36:35Bit of a starry-eyed moment then, is it?
36:38So, we spotted Mike, but it's great.
36:41You're not such a thing.
36:43Whilst Michael unknowingly waits to inspect what he thinks could be Dan's new family runaround,
36:50Mike sets the trap to lure him into the perfect position for the big reveal.
36:55Fantastic, guys.
36:56You want to come on through, then?
36:58Mate, would you mind, just to quickly grab a word of you, maybe one of the reasons why you
37:03chose to come here and buy a car?
37:05It would really help my business, if you don't mind.
37:08Now, Mike needs to get Michael to the other side of this shutter to make this happen.
37:13Could we get you, like, together?
37:20You brought your dad along.
37:21Do you like cars, yourself?
37:23Yeah.
37:24What cars do you like?
37:25Well, I've got a Toyota Celica.
37:28I love an old Toyota Celica.
37:30What condition is it in?
37:31It needs some work doing to it.
37:39It's very kind of you to come down with your son.
37:42So, let's make sure we get the right car.
37:43Yeah.
37:44Yeah.
37:45You want to make sure you get the right car.
37:46Yeah.
37:47But no doubt, in the future, no doubt, that car will gravitate to being a Toyota GT4.
37:54In fact, I think your car might be ready for you.
37:56Oh, yeah.
37:57Oh, yeah.
38:05How are you doing?
38:06Right?
38:07Yeah.
38:08Do you recognise this?
38:09I do, yeah.
38:10It's my car, GT4, yeah.
38:12Any idea what's going on here today?
38:14Oh, I don't know, yes.
38:15Can we bring out Michael's family, please?
38:18Come on.
38:19Come on out.
38:20Everybody out.
38:21Let's have a round of applause.
38:22Hey!
38:27Come on in, guys.
38:28Come on in.
38:32I'm shocked.
38:33That is your car.
38:34I know it's taken a while to settle in here.
38:36Yeah.
38:37But Alison and Jackie wrote to us.
38:38Alison, can you explain to your lovely Michael why you wrote to us?
38:41I know that.
38:42Obviously, you've been in the hospital and you didn't know whether you were going to make it
38:45and everything.
38:46I thought I'd do something nice for you to make.
38:48Oh, thank you.
38:49You are my whole world.
38:52You mean everything to me.
38:54Yeah.
38:55Everything you do is absolutely brilliant.
38:57And I can't believe this is what you've done.
38:59Come on.
39:00Give him a round of applause.
39:04When the boys got their paws on Michael Celica, it was in worse shape than a portaloo at a pie-eating contest.
39:12But after some serious mechanical mastery, it looks as good as the day it rolled off the factory floor.
39:19Under the bonnet, the two-litre engine and turbocharger have been refurbished and alongside the restored suspension stand ready to tackle the next 30 years on the road.
39:31Inside, the seats have been match-dyed back to their original 90s grey.
39:38And the whole thing has been topped off with a fresh set of competition-inspired rally wheels.
39:44I've seen his face now with a big smile on it, and he just cannot, yeah, he just cannot stop smiling.
39:53Some memorable treasure moments that he's got that will always be with him forever.
39:58But before Michael and Alison drive off into the sunset, the boys have one final surprise up their sleeves.
40:05I just want to show you something.
40:07Yeah.
40:08Hello, Michael and Alison.
40:18I'm Paul Ludlow, President of P&O Cruises.
40:21I heard what happened, and we would be delighted to offer you a holiday whenever you are able to travel.
40:27I hope you have a wonderful time.
40:29We look forward to welcoming you on board.
40:31So they'll finally be able to go on the honeymoon they paid for.
40:37But never got to enjoy.
40:39So not only has he got his car back, but he's also driving down to Southampton to go on their honeymoon!
40:49It's a tough question to answer, but every day that you came out of the house and looked at this car, did you think you'd get it done?
40:55No.
40:56I used to dream about it being done, but every now and again I'd come out of the house and when I was feeling good on a good day, I'd wash it and I'd see all the damage and the rust and I thought it used to depress me even more.
41:15I never thought in a million years it could ever look like this ever again.
41:21And it's just been a bad year for me, health-wise and everything, and it's just like icing on the cake now.
41:29Alison wanted to see a smile on your face.
41:33Yeah, I've seen one today, yeah.
41:36Just to smile.
41:37I'm smiling now, yeah.
41:41There is only one thing left for me to do, I'd just say.
41:44So, Michael, it is with great pleasure that I say it's been an honour to meet you, an honour to work on your car, and you have been Car SLF.
41:54Oh, lovely. Thank you, Tim, that's brilliant.
41:56Honestly, we so deserve it.
41:58Yeah, thank you, yeah.
