00:00A young mother vanishes without a trace in a rural part of Lancashire in the northwest of England.
00:10Where is she? Where has she been left? What has happened to Katie?
00:16Quickly, a prime suspect emerges, but he is determined to lead the investigation astray.
00:23Everything that he says has happened has been proved to not be true, proved to be impossible.
00:30They didn't see this as a straightforward missing person case.
00:33They had helicopters up, they had dogs, they had officers, everybody was searching the forest for this shallow grave.
00:47The forest of Boland is such a picturesque place, it's a real beauty spot.
00:52It's the last place that you would expect something so dark and chilling to take place.
01:00To be continued...

31:38It just didn't fit at all. There's no way.
31:40And even the officers in the inquiry team there
31:43did almost a rerun
31:45to try and go through things that he says has happened
31:48and worked out, obviously, straight away
31:50that it's impossible what he's done.
31:52You have not dug that hole in the ten minutes
31:56that you have said to us.
32:00It might have been longer.
32:02Right, OK.
32:03I don't know how long I'm over there, do I?
32:05All I'm saying is I dug all that bit.
32:06Well, you know how long you're there.
32:09And you're not long enough.
32:12But they need to work out now this is premeditated.
32:16What has he done in the days preceding
32:18when he said he accidentally killed Katie?
32:22This is a predator.
32:36Lancashire police are investigating the kidnapping
32:41and suspected murder of 33-year-old mother Katie Kenyon.
32:46Her on-off boyfriend, 51-year-old Andrew Burfield,
32:49was arrested after blood-stained bags were found at his workplace.
32:54Burfield claims he accidentally killed Katie
32:56while playing a game involving an axe.
32:58Seven days later, after her disappearance,
33:01police have released him from custody
33:03to show them where he buried her,
33:05now suspecting the murder was premeditated.
33:08The thing is, Andrew, you've told us a lot
33:10over the last few days, haven't you?
33:12And you've told us a lot, certainly today,
33:14a lot of information.
33:16And a lot of it just does not add up, OK?
33:19And ultimately, we don't believe you of what you've said, OK?
33:25But do not believe that this has been an accident.
33:28This is about your control and your over-over Katie,
33:32and you're losing the control.
33:36Police examine Burfield's movements
33:38in the days leading up to the murder.
33:40One of the first things they see is CCTV the day before,
33:43the 21st of April,
33:45where he is seen clearly on CCTV,
33:48borrowing a spade from his dad
33:51and putting it in that grey panel van
33:54with that distinctive black panel on the side.
33:57It helps to form that notion
33:59that perhaps he's gone and actually dug something beforehand.
34:04That does come to proof,
34:06because what they do then is they then find CCTV
34:07the day before going to the forest,
34:10to the exact same location.
34:12And on that particular occasion,
34:14this is where they believe he has dug in preparation.
34:18For killing Katie.
34:22The police told Burfield that they knew
34:24that he'd been in the forest the day before.
34:27He had to think on his feet, really,
34:30and the story that he came up with
34:32was that he'd just had new brakes put on his van
34:33and he needed to bed them in.
34:35So he'd been up to the forest,
34:37testing his brakes,
34:39took his dog for a walk the night before.
34:40But the evidence at the crime scene told a different story.
34:46As the crime scene itself is being examined by the forensic teams,
34:51they notice two sets of footprints now in this grave
34:55that has been identified.
34:57One set of footprints has zigzags on,
35:00the other one is like a block print.
35:02So two sets of footprints don't match what Katie would have been wearing,
35:06either flip-flops or her trainers.
35:08So, you know, it indicates either two people there,
35:12which has to be a hypothesis for the investigating officer initially,
35:17or that someone has been there on two different occasions
35:22who owns two different pairs of shoes.
35:24What you could see on the CCTV footage
35:26the day before Katie was killed,
35:29when Andrew Burfield was collecting a spade from his father's address,
35:32was that he was wearing a certain type of trainer
35:35that has the zigzags on it.
35:37What they also found later on
35:39was that the block print of the print that was next to that grave
35:43matched his work boots that he also owned as a builder.
35:47So the indication then helped them again have that theory
35:51that he's been there before over two different occasions.
35:56The body is taken in for an autopsy
35:59where the extent of Katie's injuries are revealed.
36:02When they took Katie's body off for a post-mortem,
36:06it was immediately apparent that he was lying.
36:08This was no accident.
36:10Katie had 12 different injuries to her head
36:13and some defensive injuries as well
36:15where she'd tried... where there'd been a struggle.
36:17To the point where she's unrecognisable
36:20and the family don't even get to see her body
36:24because she's been too mutilated.
36:28There was no way that that was a game gone wrong.
36:33Everything that he says has happened
36:35has been proved to not be true,
36:37proved to be impossible,
36:38proved to be a timeline of which his timeline
36:41is completely and utterly opposite
36:44to the CCTV, to the phones, to the ANPR,
36:47to the witness statements,
36:49to what he's done at the scene in this beautiful forest.
36:52You know, everything doesn't match up.
36:54The evidence tells you one story.
36:56Andrew Burfield is telling you a completely different story.
37:00We're looking at a predatorial stalker here,
37:05a serial perpetrator,
37:06someone with no remorse whatsoever,
37:10someone with no empathy,
37:13someone who doesn't show any compassion
37:15to her children,
37:18to her mum,
37:20to her sisters.
37:22And he weaves this web of deceit remorselessly.
37:29The more the police dig into Andrew Burfield's background,
37:32they identify previous girlfriends.
37:34And the situation that he had with them,
37:39the relationships he had with them,
37:40were very similar,
37:41very controlling,
37:42a misogynist,
37:43you know,
37:43very nasty person.
37:46But what we also then find out
37:49is that he's on Tinder,
37:51he's on dating sites,
37:52he's been to places before
37:55where he knows that there is a woman
37:58who's living alone in a house
38:00and they need a builder.
38:02And he asks impertinent questions
38:05that ring alarm bells.
38:08So, are you living alone?
38:10Do you have a partner?
38:11Do you have a husband?
38:13And he needs this information
38:15in order to pick victims
38:17because that's what he's doing.
38:19He's picking victims all the time
38:21to see how he can manipulate them.
38:25There's evidence of him being a fantasist,
38:27a Walter Mitty type of character.
38:29He had potentially another relationship in Scotland
38:32with trips back and forth to Scotland.
38:34He claimed that he had a large property empire.
38:38She even says that you,
38:40said that you were going to buy a house
38:41and that you've got a portfolio
38:43of a number of houses.
38:44The way it's relevant
38:50is because it's about you, Andrew,
38:52and the fact that you have told lies,
38:54you tell lies to women
38:55and you're manipulating these relationships
38:58to control
38:59and you fantasise about a life
39:01that you would want to have.
39:06That's not a crime.
39:08Because we're building to the fact
39:09that this hasn't just happened on Friday
39:12as you have tried to account for this morning.
39:15What we're saying is that hasn't happened.
39:17OK?
39:21Further evidence of his premeditation
39:23was discovered during the analysis of his phone.
39:26And what they see there
39:27is a series weeks before,
39:29two or three weeks before,
39:31where he is typing out responses of text messages
39:34premeditated to send to the children and family
39:37on his notes in his phone
39:39and that he would then transfer them from notes
39:42into text messages
39:43on the day that he killed her
39:45or the days after.
39:46This was his plan.
39:48So they could see that all those things were written
39:50weeks before in preparation
39:51to give a full story
39:53as to where Katie might be.
39:57Burfield left voicemails for Katie
39:59after he savagely murdered her
40:01in an attempt to deflect police attention from him.
40:04All these frantic things
40:17that he's doing around these messages
40:19and how he's supposed to be worried about her,
40:22two minutes later,
40:23they see on his phone
40:24he's texting other women
40:26saying what a great day he's having,
40:29you know, had a good day at work
40:30and allegedly sitting there
40:32watching the football as well on TV.
40:34Of course, this builds a picture
40:35that this man has premeditated,
40:37he's done what he thinks,
40:38he now thinks he's done enough
40:39to throw everyone off the scent
40:40and now he can relax.
40:42But obviously little does he know
40:43that actually what he's doing
40:44is he's creating more and more evidence
40:46for the police
40:47to narrow down on him
40:48as being the person that killed Katie.
40:51Katie herself even had her concerns about you.
40:54She even told her own sister.
40:57What she said to her sister was,
40:58if I go missing,
41:00it will be him, meaning you,
41:02who's done it.
41:04On the basis of all of the evidence
41:05that they had,
41:06the police felt confident enough
41:08to charge him with murder.
41:11The murder trial begins
41:12at Preston Crown Court in Lancashire
41:14on November 14th, 2022.
41:19Interestingly,
41:20he wanted a trial
41:22and that automatically
41:25makes you think
41:27the poor parents,
41:30the poor sisters,
41:32the poor children,
41:34they're going to have to listen
41:35to what happened
41:37to their loved one
41:38in graphic detail.
41:40Burfield was sitting in the dock
41:41and his demeanour never changed
41:43throughout the whole thing.
41:44He had very much a poker face on.
41:46He wasn't going to give anything away
41:48by his body language,
41:49but as the prosecution case
41:52came out,
41:53point by point,
41:54it was almost jaw-dropping.
41:57The levels of manipulation
41:58that he was using,
42:00the control
42:01that he was holding over Katie,
42:04the gaslighting,
42:05it was...
42:07You just felt enormous sympathy for her.
42:10She must not have known
42:11where her head was at.
42:13And then,
42:14when it came out
42:15that he'd planned all of this,
42:18this wasn't an argument
42:19that got out of hand.
42:20He'd gone to great lengths
42:22to ensure that this happened.
42:25With the writing
42:26of the text messages,
42:27the digging of the grave,
42:28it was...
42:29..chilling.
42:33On the third day of the trial,
42:36we went to court
42:37and there was a huge delay
42:38and when Burfield
42:40was brought into court,
42:41they asked for the charge
42:42to be put to him again.
42:43And at that point,
42:44Burfield pleaded guilty to murder.
42:48Andrew Burfield
42:49changed his plea to guilty
42:50three days into his trial
42:52for killing Katie Kenyon,
42:53who was from Paddyham.
42:55Burfield had claimed
42:56he killed Katie by accident.
42:58Yesterday,
42:59he changed his plea to guilty.
43:01The judge told the 51-year-old
43:03that he should prepare himself
43:05that he might die in jail.
43:08You know,
43:08it's often said in murder trials
43:10that, you know,
43:11murder requires malice of forethought,
43:12some form of premeditation,
43:14but that that premeditation
43:15can be formed
43:16in an instant
43:17before doing an act
43:18that is intended to kill
43:19or seriously injure somebody.
43:21Well, this is premeditation
43:22running back weeks and weeks
43:25at an absolute minimum
43:26and running over
43:27a pattern of behaviour
43:28where he has been coercive,
43:30controlling towards Katie
43:32and to others.
43:33So this is somebody
43:34that was effectively
43:35a ticking time bomb.
43:37I suppose, you know,
43:38if it hadn't been Katie Kenyon,
43:39it would have been somebody else.
43:40This was clearly
43:41a very, very dangerous,
43:43very sadistic,
43:44very cruel
43:45and entirely lacking
43:47in empathy individual
43:48because you look at the way
43:50that he tried
43:51to even deceive her family,
43:53you know,
43:54not even giving her family
43:55the kind of closure
43:56that they would have wanted
43:58either quickly
43:58or even trying
43:59to maintain this fallacy
44:01that she was alive.
44:02It's disgusting.
44:03His guilty plea
44:04was to save himself
44:06a little bit of time in prison.
44:09He doesn't care
44:09about anyone else.
44:11The court was packed
44:11on the day of sentence.
44:13Everybody wanted
44:14to see justice served
44:15to this evil, evil man.
44:18Burfield came into the dock
44:19and he looked
44:23a little bit crestfallen,
44:26I suppose,
44:26like he had finally been
44:28been caught.
44:30He wasn't getting away
44:31with this terrible thing
44:33that he planned.
44:36Andrew Burfield
44:37is then sentenced
44:38to 32 years in prison
44:40and that's a minimum term
44:42as well
44:42because of the dangerousness
44:44that he poses
44:44to the public.
44:47Burfield's life sentence
44:48is a relief
44:49for Katie's family
44:50but it will not
44:51bring her back.
44:53Katie Kenyon
44:54was a young woman
44:55who still had
44:55her whole life ahead of her.
44:57She should have been able
44:57to watch her children grow up.
44:59She should have been able
44:59to spend time
45:00in the community
45:01that she loved
45:01doing the simple pleasures
45:03that she seemed to adore,
45:05being out with family,
45:06being out with children,
45:07being out in the outdoors
45:08and nature.
45:09Burfield robbed Katie
45:10of the chance
45:11to live a healthy, long life,
45:13to be around the children
45:14that she loved so dearly
45:15and all of her family
45:16and the wider implications
45:18of this for her family
45:19and the community
45:20cannot be understated.
45:21I didn't know Katie
45:23but I got a feeling
45:25from her family
45:26and her friends
45:26and the photographs
45:27and everything
45:28that we'd seen
45:29that she was,
45:30she seemed lovely.
45:32Burfield was chilling
45:33to think of what she went through.
45:36It was absolutely heartbreaking.
45:41Andrew Burfield
45:42is a coercive
45:44and controlling,
45:45manipulative person
45:46and is a very dangerous,
45:48very evil man
45:49and the indignity
45:51that he showed to her
45:53in the relationship,
45:55you know,
45:55carried on with the indignity
45:57in the way
45:57that he treated her
45:58after death as well,
45:59you know,
46:00leaving her in his hope
46:02that she would never be found
46:03in a forest.
46:12The Forest of Boland
46:13is such a picturesque place.
46:16It's a real beauty spot.
46:18It's the last place
46:19that you would expect
46:20something so dark
46:22and chilling
46:23to take place.
46:46and it's the last place
46:47that you just could do
46:48for example.
46:51A map of Africa
