00:00This is Project Runway.
00:10My name is Jarell Scott.
00:11I am from Los Angeles, California, and I'm 28 years old.
00:15I originally started modeling when I was 18, and I moved to New York, and I couldn't afford the cool clothes.
00:20Had to make the cool clothes and sell.
00:22What I do now is design one-of-a-kind custom pieces for a very select group of people,
00:27from celebrities to Saudi royalty.
00:29I know what I'm capable of, and it's time for me to take it to the next level.
00:33Oh, these other designers, I'm so sorry, but you're gonna have to go home one by one.
00:39What's your name?
00:40Blaine. Blaine Jarell.
00:42My name is Blaine Walsh.
00:44I've been a fashion designer for six years.
00:46Eventually, it will pay the bills.
00:49What's up, Paula?
00:50Right now, I work at a coffee shop.
00:53I love urban wear, like street gear, like that's my passion.
00:58I have a ridiculous obsession with tanning, so whoever I need to talk to, squeeze that in.
01:06Hey.
01:07Hey, how you doing?
01:08How are you? I'm Blaine.
01:09Joe.
01:10Nice to meet you.
01:11Yeah.
01:12Where are you from?
01:13Seattle.
01:14Detroit.
01:15Yeah.
01:16My name is Stella Zotis.
01:18Rock stars come to me for a look.
01:21I build and design custom rock regalia for blondie Sebastian Bach, hookers, or pimps, or whoever is tough enough to wear it.
01:30Being here is an excellent chance for me to step outside of leather and denim.
01:36This will be my opportunity.
01:40Hi.
01:41I'm Jennifer.
01:42Hi, Jennifer. I'm Stella.
01:43I'm Jennifer Dietrich, and I'm living in a small town near Florence, Italy.
01:48My style is kind of a surreal style. I like to call it Holly Golightly Goes to Salvador Dali Exhibit.
01:56I hope I don't get eliminated right away.
01:58I think that's on everyone's mind.
02:02Hey. Hello. I'm Kelly.
02:03Hi, Kelly.
02:04Hi, Jennifer.
02:05Nice to meet you.
02:06What's up? I'm Stella.
02:07Nice to meet you.
02:08I always say if Vivian Westwood and Betsy Johnson had a baby, that would be me.
02:11I started my own store, Black Market, in Columbus, Ohio.
02:15I just cranked stuff out to try and make a living.
02:17And it's difficult, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
02:22Hi.
02:23Hi, I'm Terry.
02:24Hi, Terry.
02:25What's up, girl?
02:29My name is Jerry Tam.
02:31I'm actually doing very well as a designer with my own company.
02:35Hi, Project Runway.
02:37Welcome to Farm.
02:38I'm on the forefront of being a big name in the industry.
02:43But having this platform to show my designs is a dream come true.
02:52Hey, what's up?
02:53Hey.
02:54How's it going?
02:55Good, I'm Suede.
02:56Hey, I'm Jerry.
02:57I'm Suede, I'm 37, and I'm from New York City.
02:59I've designed for polo jeans, Todd Oldham jeans, Jordache.
03:03With each challenge, I'm going to snick out the competition.
03:07I got tired of making millions for the rest of the world and decided Suede needed to make millions for Suede.
03:13So I'm here to go to that next step and Suede is going to rock it.
03:17Yeah!
03:19Hey, I'm Suede.
03:20Suede.
03:21Suede, Keith, buddy.
03:22Nice to meet you, man.
03:24My name is Kato Momolu Briggs.
03:26I'm originally from Liberia, West Africa, and I currently live in Little Rock, Arkansas.
03:32In Little Rock, I've been in every magazine, but I'm actually trying to get into the real scene, which is in New York.
03:37So I'm going to be the second woman in this one and the first African American.
03:41Hi!
03:42Hello!
03:43My name's Ken Lee.
03:44I'm Kato.
03:45Nice to meet you.
03:46Nice to meet you.
03:47I'm Leanne.
03:48Kato.
03:49Nice to meet you.
03:50I started my clothing line, LeAnimal, a few years ago.
03:53I'm coming from way out of Left Field in Portland, Oregon.
03:56So I think the other designers are going to underestimate me.
04:00I am the silent fashion assassin.
04:03Hi, roommate.
04:05Hi!
04:06What's her name?
04:07I'm Emily.
04:08Emily Anne.
04:09Hi!
04:10Nice to meet you.
04:11Nice to meet you too.
04:12Yay!
04:14Daniel, nice to meet you.
04:15Nice to meet you.
04:16Welcome.
04:17Come on in.
04:20Hey, what's up?
04:21I'm Blaine.
04:22Leslie.
04:23I spent just about a year at Marc Jacobs and it was an incredible opportunity.
04:28I feel very secure with myself being young and being in this industry.
04:32And my clothes are divine.
04:35Very comfortable at all.
04:36It's like my daughter's bed.
04:37It's on the floor.
04:38You have kids?
04:39Two girls.
04:40Five and nine.
04:41I focus on three key areas.
04:43T-shirts, jeans, leather jackets.
04:45My main motivation is to show my daughters that you can do exactly what you want.
04:50Just be who you are and go for it.
04:52Anybody else have kids?
04:53Significant other.
04:54Start there.
04:55You know.
04:56Wes, you don't talk.
04:57I will.
04:58Don't worry.
04:59Project runaway.
05:00Welcome to your new home.
05:01Please settle in and meet us on the roof.
05:02It's time to get started.
05:03Love, Heidi, and Tim.
05:04Wow, wow.
05:05I'm not sure what's going to happen on the rooftop.
05:06Is this going to be our first challenge already?
05:07Dun, dun, dun, dun.
05:08Here they come.
05:09Here they come.
05:10I'm a bit serious.
05:11And they come out.
05:12Come out.
05:13Keep it in and out.
05:14I like to be a big snack.
05:15You want to know what you're going to do right now.
05:16It's time to get started.
05:17Love, Heidi, and Tim.
05:18Wow.
05:19Let's go.
05:20The sun you all know.
05:21I'm not sure what's going to happen on the rooftop.
05:22Is this going to be our first challenge already?
05:25Dun, dun, dun, dun.
05:26Here they come.
05:41Welcome, everyone.
05:43We're on the rooftop of Atlas, New York,
05:45Gotham City's luxury apartment building,
05:47and this will be your new home.
05:51Yeah!
05:52And you all know Tim Gunn,
05:54Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne,
05:57and he will be your mentor while you're here.
05:59Indeed, I will.
06:00Woo-hoo!
06:01Good job!
06:03Welcome, everyone.
06:05I want to be the first to say
06:06that you may be the most diverse group of designers
06:09we've ever had on Project Runway.
06:11The one thing all 16 of you share
06:13is the talent and skills to win this competition.
06:16Yeah!
06:17So knock our socks off.
06:21So, Tim, do you think they're ready for the first challenge?
06:24I don't know.
06:25Are you?
06:25Yeah!
06:26Yeah!
06:26Come on!
06:27Really?
06:27Yeah!
06:28Yeah!
06:30Ha!
06:31Too bad.
06:32Unfortunately, you're going to have to wait
06:34until tomorrow morning.
06:35Right now, let's pop some champagne bottles.
06:38Let's do it!
06:39Yes!
06:40Woo!
06:40Woo!
06:41Woo!
06:42Woo!
06:43Woo!
06:44Woo!
06:45Woo!
06:46Woo!
06:47Woo!
06:48Woo!
06:49Hey, I'm Swade.
06:50Jennifer.
06:51Nice to meet you.
06:52Jerry.
06:52Jerry, I'm Stella.
06:53Nice to meet you, Stella.
06:54Nice to meet you, too.
06:55How does this whole experience feel to you?
06:58Exactly right.
06:59Good!
07:00Currently, I do Smoke and Mirrors clothing.
07:03We're just a tiny little fledgling company right now,
07:05and I came here to do a job, and I'm going to do it.
07:08And what is your style?
07:10My style is, like, if Aerosmith was to meet Lauren Hill
07:13and Michael Jackson, that's what you would see.
07:15I think the thing that will set me apart from the other designers
07:18is the fact that I am really fast, and I can make a three-piece suit
07:22in, like, an eight-hour period.
07:24And what is your style?
07:25It's kind of urban, a little bit raw.
07:27But I, you know, I design for you all the time.
07:30And I'm like, if I would wear it, then it's acceptable.
07:33But if not, it's garbage.
07:36Good.
07:36I keep that in mind.
07:37I'm a completely self-taught designer.
07:40I have a gift that many aspire to go through school to have,
07:43and I was just born with it.
07:45You go to the sanding bed a lot, don't you?
07:47I know.
07:48Look how I'm so happy and so tan.
07:50I know.
07:50Wow.
07:51Your eyes, your blue eyes really stand out with that sand.
07:54My name is Kenley Collins, and I'm 25 years old.
07:58My aesthetic is loud because I mix prints, I mix plaids,
08:02and I can't wait to show the world what I can do.
08:08My name is Daniel Felt, and I am from Brooklyn, New York.
08:11Here with my little buddies over here.
08:13If I wasn't a fashion designer, I would have been a zoologist.
08:16I draw a lot of inspiration from nature,
08:18and my looks are always glamorous and stark skin.
08:22Billy are always showstoppers.
08:24The Project Runway season five!
08:26Yay!
08:28Cheers!
08:29Cheers!
08:30Cheers!
08:31Cheers!
08:32Cheers!
08:33Cheers!
08:34Cheers!
08:35Cheers!
08:36Cheers!
08:37Cheers!
08:38That's amazing.
08:39Got enough black shoes there, man.
08:40Yeah, I kind of change them every day, you know?
08:41So what do you think the challenge is going to be?
08:43I have absolutely no idea.
08:44I have a feeling it's all going to be some real hardcore shit.
08:46I kind of want to get the ball rolling, get sewing, so I'm just anxious and I'm waiting what's going to happen next.
09:01Good night, mister.
09:02You go.
09:03Good morning.
09:04How are you?
09:05Good morning.
09:06I need you to rally everybody.
09:07I need you to get dressed, meet me in the lobby, and you'll learn about your first challenge.
09:19All right.
09:20I barely even slept.
09:21Meet me in the lobby.
09:22Okay.
09:23We're going to learn about today's challenge.
09:24Hi, everybody.
09:25Good morning.
09:26Good morning.
09:27Good morning.
09:28Hi.
09:29Surprise.
09:30I was embarrassed to be standing in a towel next to the same gun, and I didn't brush my teeth,
09:33which I regret.
09:35As soon as the door closes, mayhem.
09:36Girls, I'm going to get dressed.
09:37I'm going to get dressed, meet me in the lobby, and you'll learn about your first challenge.
09:39All right.
09:40I barely even slept.
09:41Meet me in the lobby.
09:42Okay.
09:43We're going to learn about today's challenge.
09:44Hi, everybody.
09:45Good morning.
09:46Hi.
09:47Surprise.
09:48I was embarrassed to be standing in a towel next to the same gun, and I didn't brush my teeth,
09:51which I regret.
09:53As soon as the door closes, mayhem.
09:55Girls are flying everywhere.
09:57And Stella lays back down and told me to wake her up in five minutes.
10:02Love her.
10:23I have no idea where we're going.
10:26Maybe to an amusement park, a zoo.
10:29It's so surreal.
10:30I've been watching other designers do it for four seasons, and now I'm walking down the
10:34street with Tim, and this is the first challenge, and it means everything.
10:38All right, designers.
10:40We're going to line up right over here.
10:42Designers, this is the destination of your first challenge.
10:49Oh, my gosh.
10:50Oh, my gosh.
10:51Oh, my gosh.
10:52Oh, my gosh.
10:53As you can see, we've come full circle.
10:55Oh, my gosh.
10:56Great.
10:57A supermarket.
10:58What the hell do you make out of there?
11:00A Carmen Miranda fruit basket that you had?
11:02Like, seriously, now?
11:03Oh, that's great.
11:04When I saw the Gristides challenge in season one, and I never really thought about what
11:10would I do if I had to go to the grocery store?
11:12So now that I know I have to do it, yikes.
11:15Our first Project Runway challenge ever was that at Gristides, and I've invited a special
11:21guest to help me fill you in on the details.
11:23Uh-oh.
11:34How are you, sweetheart?
11:35How are you, sweetheart?
11:36When I see Austin, I think total glamour.
11:40Out of any Project Runway contestant, he was by far my favorite.
11:43I want you to welcome season one designer Austin Scarlett, who will be your guest judge
11:47for this challenge.
11:48I'm a little bit nervous that Austin's the judge because his fashion style isn't exactly
11:54the same as my fashion style.
11:56Well, if you haven't guessed it already, you will be purchasing items from this wonderful
12:01grocery store to create a design of your choice.
12:04On that very first season, I won this challenge with a little dress all made of corn husks.
12:10That little dress made a big impact on my life and helped launch my career.
12:15Innovation was the key to my success, and so it shall be to yours.
12:20This challenge presents a phenomenal creative opportunity for you.
12:24Austin, do you have the envelopes?
12:26I do, Tim.
12:28Here we go.
12:30Good luck.
12:31So you will have a budget of $75 and half an hour to make your purchases.
12:36There's no time for second guessing, and it's all about me getting in that store as fast
12:41as I can, and hopefully no one's going to get in my way because it's going to get kind
12:44of ugly.
12:45When we return to Parsons, you will have until midnight tonight to complete your look.
12:50All right, designers, your half hour begins now.
12:56There they go.
12:57I chatted.
12:58I didn't care if I got hit by a car.
13:00I was going to be the first one in.
13:06I had my whole look mapped out in my head.
13:08I wanted to go with a April shower, spring, May flowers look.
13:12So I'm using the shower curtain to make a rain jacket.
13:16Okay, perfect.
13:18I go into Gristini's with a purpose.
13:21My strategy, mop heads, mop heads, mop heads.
13:25I'm not going to use any live produce.
13:28I'm mad that somebody took my asparagus.
13:31I'm a mommy, so I know a supermarket when I see one.
13:34I have three bell peppers, and then I have all this kale.
13:37I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the kale, but that's going to actually be my wow factor.
13:45I want something really fun, youthful, maybe something that encompasses the idea of a dessert.
13:52Designers, you've got to go, go, go.
13:54This isn't idle shopping.
13:56Don't worry, Tim.
13:58I'll make you proud.
14:00The first thing I see is me on jump ropes, and so I beeline it.
14:04But I knew I could, like, unravel everything and use that.
14:06It was just a madhouse.
14:07Like, everybody's throwing their bags down and, like, going crazy looking for all kinds of stuff.
14:11It was nuts.
14:15Trash bags.
14:16Because there's nothing like a trash bag.
14:19I'm going to make what I do.
14:21I'm going to make a pair of pants and kind of a vest, mainly out of garbage bags.
14:29I definitely, definitely, definitely did not want to get any kind of tablecloth or anything that resembled fabric.
14:36That was too easy.
14:37Kelly, you have five minutes.
14:39Okay, I'm ready.
14:45Designers, time is up.
14:47You need to be in line now if you're not already.
14:50F*** it.
14:51I'm going to clean it up.
14:52Not me.
14:53Boom.
14:54Done.
14:56I can't wait to get back to the workroom and start working on it.
14:57I say bring it on.
14:58I'm ready.
14:59Coming up on Project Runway.
15:00You guys are a bunch of slackers.
15:01Yikes.
15:02Holy cow.
15:03Holy cow.
15:04Oof.
15:05We all walk into the famous Parsons where everything happens and I can't wait to get started.
15:06I can't wait to get started.
15:07We all walk into the famous Parsons where everything happens and I can't wait to get started.
15:13This is a nice fit.
15:14This is a challenge about innovation.
15:15We all walk into the famous Parsons and I can't wait to get started.
15:21Whack-a-doodle.
15:22Whack-a-doodle.
15:23Whack-a-doodle.
15:24This is a challenge about innovation.
15:28I'm totally nervous to get all these grocery store items on this garment.
15:32Whack-a-doodle.
15:33Designers, welcome to Parsons, the new school for design.
15:34Thanks.
15:35We're thrilled to have you here.
15:36On your table you will find a card with information about the model we've assigned you.
15:37And you can see the new model we've assigned you.
15:38This is a challenge about innovation.
15:39I'm totally nervous to get all these grocery store items on this garment.
15:40Whack-a-doodle.
15:41Whack-a-doodle.
15:42Whack-a-doodle.
15:43We're thrilled to have you here.
15:44Whack-a-doodle.
15:45Whack-a-doodle.
15:46Whack-a-doodle.
15:47Whack-a-doodle.
15:48Whack-a-doodle.
15:49Whack-a-doodle.
15:50Whack-a-doodle.
15:51Whack-a-doodle.
15:52Designers, welcome to Parsons, the new school for design.
15:55Thanks.
15:56We're thrilled to have you here.
15:58Whack-a-doodle.
15:59On your table you will find a card with information about the model we've assigned you.
16:03Remember that you have until midnight tonight to complete this challenge.
16:07And the winner of this challenge will have immunity for the next challenge and cannot be eliminated.
16:14Whack-a-doodle.
16:15Awesome.
16:16All right.
16:17Make it work.
16:20To Fusilli or not to Fusilli?
16:24My theme is going to be Italian.
16:27I'm making a tomato, hot plate, spaghetti, Fusilli dress.
16:32I'm thinking like Cruella de Vil meets Gem.
16:36Gem.
16:37She's girlishous.
16:39So who's still doing what they were doing in the supermarket?
16:42You are?
16:43Kind of.
16:44I think I got it gone.
16:46Maybe, if it works.
16:47The first thing I started doing was testing the bleach and the dye on the vacuum cleaner
16:54bags.
16:55What I'm making is kind of a garden dress.
16:57It has kind of a gritty print, almost like a marble.
17:00It's going to be a pretty ugly dress, for sure.
17:03Pretty ugly in a great way.
17:05All right.
17:06Come on, Joe.
17:07Double Ds.
17:08Oh, hey.
17:09There you go.
17:10There's some Double Ds for you.
17:13I am making a sweetheart cocktail dress using my plastic cups.
17:23This one melted too much.
17:26I'm ironing it down so the plastic begins to be moldable from the heat.
17:32Then I take the glue gun and begin to layer it on top of the muslin cloth.
17:36What's the glue gun?
17:37Oh, no.
17:38It started melting.
17:39The fun has arrived.
17:42We've been working out.
17:44She's girlishous.
17:46I'm not quite sure what Blaine's trying to sell with all his licious this, licious that.
17:51I'll let you girlishous.
17:53But I wish he'd put it back in his case, close it up, and take it to the girl next door.
18:04Titillate the judges, girls and boys.
18:07Titillate.
18:08Yeah, I'm just like, Tim, don't come and see what I have so far.
18:12I noticed that a lot of other people have tablecloths.
18:17This makes me a little bit nervous because I wanted to be different.
18:21I am so competitive.
18:24I'm here to win this.
18:25Okay, I'm going to pop this.
18:28That wasn't so bad.
18:32As a designer, I always wanted to be taken serious.
18:35I saw that people were just putting crap on top of crap.
18:38You know, paper bags on top of coffee filters and balloons or balls and produce.
18:45That's all the stuff I just throw away in the trash.
18:48Oh, my God.
18:51This is the worst fabric.
18:59One of my fabrics was trash bags because it could have been like black patent leather pants.
19:05And when I opened them up, they're too loud and too thin and they even break to the touch.
19:11You stress them?
19:13Yeah, because my fabric is trash.
19:15I don't have product to make my stuff with.
19:19So, the aesthetic of the entire idea might turn out garbage.
19:26I mean, you don't even have to worry about her boobs because those are like cubs.
19:38Oh, these are, this is the, yeah.
19:39Oh, yeah.
19:40She's going to thank me.
19:41Right?
19:42Make her look like she's got boobs.
19:43I purchased a dodgeball, three lawn chairs, and red tablecloth.
19:50And I love the dress.
19:52I would wear it.
19:58I'm folding napkins over here.
20:00I'm making this white dress just out of paper towels.
20:05I had the idea of putting like lipstick marks on it.
20:09Like someone just wiped their mouth and left their napkin on the table.
20:15It's difficult when you're working with groceries.
20:17Yeah, I've never worked with groceries.
20:19Stuff.
20:20I wanted to take part of me and put it into the dress.
20:25So, I found these doggy bags that totally match my hair.
20:28It looks really cool.
20:29It totally doesn't look like dog shit bags.
20:31And suede will rock it out.
20:34Hopefully the next challenge isn't at Grostides.
20:37What if they made us do it again?
20:38Wouldn't that be great?
20:39Wouldn't that be great?
20:40If they're like, you guys did so bad.
20:41For the second challenge designers, we came back to Grostides,
20:44and we're going to do it again.
20:46Make it work.
20:50I got this kind of striped lawn chair,
20:53and all these little cocktail umbrella-y things.
20:56You know, I have to be honest.
20:58My dress is looking a little like the high school prom queen
21:02and the cheerleader get into a fight,
21:04and the clothes that fell off some poor girls wear into her quinceanera.
21:08Hey, everybody.
21:18How are you?
21:20Hi, Tim.
21:21Blaine.
21:22Hi, Tim.
21:23I'd like to introduce you to Girllicious.
21:25Girllicious?
21:26Mm-hmm.
21:27All right.
21:28I didn't want to make just another dress.
21:30And you haven't.
21:31I'm not bored.
21:32You know, I wanted to kind of make it a little bit more crazy
21:34and a bit obnoxious for them to be like, okay.
21:38And there would be those who respond well and those who don't,
21:40and that's what happens when you go out on a limb
21:42and you take some risks.
21:43I'll let your boy, Tim.
21:44All right.
21:45Thank you, Blaine.
21:46Thanks, Tim.
21:49How are you, Daniel?
21:50I'm good.
21:51This is the cup dress.
21:53It is indeed a cup dress.
21:54Talk to me.
21:55Well, it's been a little bit hard to work with.
21:58I've been having to iron it down.
22:00Really?
22:01Just to mold it.
22:02Thank you very much.
22:03You just have a lot of work to do.
22:04I know.
22:05You have a wow factor going on.
22:06Yes.
22:07All right.
22:08Thank you, Daniel.
22:09Thank you, Tim.
22:10Kelly.
22:11Talk to me.
22:12What is this?
22:13This is vacuum cleaner bags with bleach and dye.
22:16I thought you bought marbleized paper, honestly.
22:19That's very nice.
22:20This is fabulous.
22:21This looks unfinished.
22:22Right, right.
22:23Think this through.
22:24I have complete confidence in you to do that.
22:26All right.
22:28All right.
22:29Wow.
22:30Stella, how are you doing?
22:32Tim, I have a dilemma.
22:34I picked a garbage bag, and look.
22:37Hi.
22:39I really don't have fabric.
22:41Those judges don't want to see a black garbage bag walk down that runway.
22:45I lost a lot of time.
22:48Make it work.
22:49I'm going to try.
22:50Okay.
22:51All right.
22:52Suede.
22:53So my materials are a picnic cloth, and these are doggy bags.
22:58I see.
22:59I question whether this belt is correct for this dress.
23:03But then I just worry that it's just a tablecloth.
23:06Yeah.
23:07You should worry that it's just a tablecloth.
23:09I will think.
23:10Okay.
23:11Think, think, think.
23:12Okay.
23:13That's all.
23:14Yes.
23:15Talk to me.
23:16Talk to me.
23:17Got a tablecloth, so I decided to play on it with the trimmings and the sleeves.
23:23I see a whole lot of tablecloth.
23:24I see a whole lot of tablecloth.
23:26You need big impact.
23:28I was going to use this on the neckline like jewels because I got sherry tomatoes that make
23:33it look like it could be emeralds and rubies.
23:36Do that.
23:37Because I'm like probably the only one that took a chance on buying vegetables.
23:40So use them.
23:41To use it to wild.
23:42That's where you need to have the giant.
23:44Oh my God, I can't believe she did that with those things.
23:47Right now, this is just a paper dress and we've seen plenty of them.
23:50Okay.
23:51All right.
23:53Jerry, what are you up to?
23:55Good news is it's a shower curtain.
23:58Bad news is it's a tablecloth.
24:00Well, shower curtain, tablecloth.
24:02Same thing.
24:03Put them in the same category.
24:04I wish I was a little bit more innovative with what they had to offer.
24:08You definitely need a wow factor.
24:10Okay.
24:11Go to work.
24:12Go to work, Jerry.
24:13Sounds good.
24:14Keith.
24:15How you doing?
24:16Good.
24:17Well, I know what this is.
24:18I didn't realize how much of this material was in this room.
24:22I just have to say, everybody, I'm seeing a lot of tablecloths around here.
24:26The reason we took you to Gristides was to use materials that were untraditional and unexpected.
24:34And a tablecloth, it is a form of fabric.
24:37I just think the judges are going to say, you guys are a bunch of slackers.
24:41Yikes.
24:42You've got to get these things to go beyond what they actually are.
24:46I suggest you keep this from looking so much like a picnic tablecloth.
24:51All right, buddy.
24:52Innovate.
24:53Thanks, man.
24:54I was nervous, to say the least.
24:57I didn't realize that so many people would go after the same thing.
25:00You have until midnight tonight.
25:03Make it work.
25:06I just don't know what to do.
25:08Tough day.
25:09Holy cow.
25:10People are freaking out, and I'm thinking, okay, focus, Wade.
25:15What is it you're going to do?
25:16He sat there and read everybody in the room.
25:19Yeah.
25:20Oh, my God.
25:21I was scared for everybody.
25:24You've got a head start on the rest of us because you didn't use a tablecloth.
25:28It's a tablecloth.
25:29My heart just sunk into my chest.
25:31The biggest fear is losing.
25:33Losing out on the first round.
25:35I don't even want to think about it.
25:40Coming up on Project Runway.
25:42It is time.
25:43It's not a good feeling.
25:45My veggies.
25:46I'm changing it, and I'm adding more netting, but whatever.
25:54I'm adding squares to mine.
25:56Yeah.
25:57So Tim is over the fact that we all use tablecloths.
26:00So now I have to rethink everything.
26:03Millions and millions of squares.
26:07Probably just a horrible idea.
26:10I just wanted to cover up as much of this tablecloth as I could,
26:14and make it look like it was made of candy entirely.
26:19Are you on time?
26:20Shh.
26:21I'm making a whole underneath piece, too.
26:24Going for it.
26:25I was just going to do a raincoat, but then I ended up doing a summer dress
26:28just to bring out some color, some flare, and the wow factor.
26:31I love your little sweater, by the way.
26:33Oh, thank you.
26:34When you need.
26:35You run out of something, get them off.
26:38Holla at your boy.
26:40I'm the first one to finish my garment,
26:42and I feel great.
26:44Like, I said I was going to dominate, and I am.
26:46I'm eliminated.
26:47No, don't say stuff.
26:48I'm eliminated.
26:49I'm not a fool.
26:50I know what I'm talking about.
26:51I really feel like I should, I'm going to make a fool of myself.
26:55If you're like one of the 16 people here,
26:57you better start draping trash bags around the body floor.
27:00That's what I'm trying to tell you.
27:01And duct taping.
27:02Just do whatever you got to do, and sell it on the runway.
27:05You can do it.
27:06You can do it.
27:07You can do it.
27:08You can do it.
27:10Guys, I have to come up with a plan B,
27:13because I don't know what I'm doing.
27:15I'm going to get sent home.
27:17Don't tell her.
27:21Ugh, the worst.
27:23I'm very worried.
27:24If I'm the first eliminated designer,
27:27I'll be the biggest jackass of the nation.
27:37Oh, Jarrell.
27:38Get your ass up, yo.
27:40So it's the morning of the first elimination challenge.
27:42I feel like I had my eyes closed for three minutes.
27:46Tired, like hot sauce on the lids.
27:49You guys ready to meet Nina and Michael?
27:51Michael I can handle.
27:52Uh-oh.
27:53Is it Nina?
27:55Yeah, I just feel I just don't want to look at me
27:57in, like, actual disgust.
27:58Like, are you kidding me?
28:02Are you guys nervous about today?
28:04A little bit, because of all the tablecloth conversation.
28:07I'm starting the car.
28:17Just like I left it.
28:18That's all I'm doing, the whole thing, and I'm set.
28:20And then I'm going to drape this collar on her
28:22and cover her boobs up with it, and that's it.
28:24There you go.
28:25As I started piecing it all together, I started realizing
28:28it might actually be an all right dress,
28:31but I'm still very worried I'm going to get eliminated.
28:35I like my design, especially the raincoat.
28:37When the judges will see it, I'm sure they'll be surprised
28:40and they'll wonder how this kid was able to make a trench coat
28:43in such a little time when it really, truly does look like
28:46it was done by a professional.
28:47Good morning, designers.
28:50Hi, Tim.
28:51It is a big day.
28:53It is your first runway show.
28:56You will have an hour to send your model to the
28:59Tresemme Hair Salon in the L'Oreal Paris makeup room,
29:02borrowed generously from the bluefly.com accessory wall.
29:05I'm going to be sending in your models right now, okay?
29:10Yay!
29:11Polina!
29:12Nice to meet you two.
29:14Yes!
29:15Yes!
29:16We may win.
29:17All right.
29:18All right.
29:19Get naked.
29:20Yeah, let's just take a look for a second.
29:22Are you my girl?
29:24Are you my girl?
29:25Come to mama.
29:26Come to mama.
29:27I'm a little bit nervous about meeting my model.
29:30I'm actually hoping the cup size fits her,
29:34because I can't adjust that.
29:36Take your clothes off.
29:37What do you think?
29:39See ya?
29:40Awesome.
29:44Whoa.
29:45Oh, my God.
29:46I'm going to have to push these puppies in there.
29:48Yeah.
29:49Oh, my gosh.
29:51But, oh, my gosh, it's, like, perfect.
29:53I just hope the pants work.
29:55That's where it's tight.
29:57My garment on Polina, it's a little snug,
30:00because she has more curves than I knew about,
30:05so I have to hand-stitch the crotch area.
30:08And I'll try my best not to poke you.
30:10Look.
30:11Yeah, it looks awesome.
30:12I love it.
30:13Oh, my God.
30:16Oh, my God, I'm so sorry.
30:19I'm a nervous wreck.
30:20Hot glue getting cookies on a dress
30:22is kind of asking for trouble.
30:25Ooh.
30:26I'm just getting so nervous about it.
30:28It's just so fragile.
30:30That's so American Psycho and scary.
30:34Jerry's garment looks like he created something
30:37for an ax murderer with the white boots and the gloves.
30:42I'm not sure how the judges are going to look at that.
30:44Okay.
30:45Cool.
30:46Do you want to wear these groovy boots?
30:48It's a little tight and then big.
30:51Like, fresh and young and cute.
30:53Like, freaking out, like, uh, beautiful.
30:57Delicious.
31:02It's perfect.
31:05Yeah.
31:06Designers, can I have your attention?
31:08You have five minutes before we have to go down to the runway, okay?
31:13Okay, let's do that.
31:14This looks like a light.
31:15Yeah.
31:16All right, I'm gonna do here.
31:17This is, like, a really comfortable dress.
31:18Comfortable, really?
31:19Yeah.
31:20It's, like, not even hot or anything.
31:21My veggies!
31:22I just kind of pray that the tomatoes would all stay in place,
31:25because if it doesn't, I'm going home.
31:27Designers, models, it is time.
31:29Follow me.
31:30We're going down to the runway.
31:31Ooh.
31:32Wow.
31:33This is the first runway in the runway.
31:35This is the first runway in the runway.
31:36Oh, wow.
31:37Wow.
31:38This is the first runway in the runway.
31:39This is the first runway in the runway.
31:41Oh, wow.
31:42Wow.
31:43Wow.
31:44Wow.
31:45Wow.
31:46Wow.
31:47Wow.
31:48Wow.
31:49Wow.
31:50Wow.
31:51This is the first runway show, and it makes you want to vomit all over the place,
31:55just anticipating what's going to happen to you.
31:57Seriously, it's not a good feeling.
32:00Kenley, you ready?
32:01Yeah.
32:02Okay, that's it.
32:04Coming up on Project Runway.
32:06I am not impressed.
32:07Do I think it's pretty?
32:09No.
32:17Hello.
32:18Hi.
32:19Welcome to the runway.
32:20Welcome to the runway.
32:21As you know in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.
32:26There's 16 of you now.
32:28Three will compete at New York Fashion Week to become the winner of Project Runway.
32:33The winner will receive a spread in Elle Magazine, a 2009 Saturn View Hybrid, an opportunity to
32:40sell their line on bluefly.com, and $100,000 to start their own line furnished by Tresemme
32:47Professional Hair Care.
32:48Your first challenge was about innovation.
32:51We asked you to design a look for materials purchased at a grocery store.
32:57Let's meet the judges.
33:00First, we have top American designer, Michael Kors.
33:03Hey guys, welcome.
33:04Hello.
33:05Hi.
33:06Next, we have Nina Garcia, editor-at-large for Elle Magazine.
33:09Nice to meet you guys.
33:10Hi.
33:11Hi.
33:12And the winner of this challenge from season one, and creative director of Kenneth Poole,
33:17Austin Scarlet.
33:18Hi.
33:19We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
33:22One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
33:28Let's start the show.
33:29I was happy with making some of the detailing out of the bouncy ball and the balloons.
33:39I thought it was forward yet wearable at the same time.
33:46I used a wand chair and paper umbrellas.
33:49It had great movement to it.
33:52She looked amazing.
33:53I know it's hot.
33:54I wish that I hadn't used the tablecloth, but I'm really happy that I decided to use the candy and the cookies.
34:06She looks delicious.
34:10My garment looks beautiful.
34:12I took that paper tablecloth beyond what it was.
34:16I'm happy the vegetables didn't fall apart.
34:19I was completely happy with it.
34:23And it actually looks pretty well sewn for paper towels.
34:27All my fears, I think, just went away.
34:36I'm the only designer that have used all plastic cups.
34:39I look at Nina's face and see that she's cracking up a bit.
34:43I hope that's a good thing.
34:45I was blown away by my crocheted couture mop top.
34:50I took something that people use every day and use it in a completely different way.
34:59I've used the tablecloth and dog baggies as trim.
35:03My dress is really beautiful, but I don't know if the judges will be impressed with it.
35:08I took some ugly, cheap-ass garbage bags and made this dress.
35:18At least it looks like something that's along the lines of what I do.
35:27I use pasta on the skirt and a really great oven mitt as my bodice.
35:33I definitely did something innovative.
35:43I feel really confident.
35:45It's made out of dodgeball and lawn chair, and I pulled it off.
35:50I think that the judges are going to like it.
35:52I completed a fully-lined, fully-finished raincoat made out of table linens and a shower curtain.
36:05I'm very happy with my final outfit.
36:07I really went to town on this project.
36:10I ended up using the yellow tablecloth, yellow cups, and fly swatters.
36:14I think the judges are going to be really impressed because they're going to have to look twice to figure out what everything is on my garment.
36:20She looks amazing walking down the runway.
36:25I used neon jump ropes, drawer linings, and windshield wipers.
36:31I'm thinking, I'm going to win this.
36:36I made kind of a gritty print with the bleach and the dye on the vacuum cleaner bags.
36:41And the whole midriff was gold pushpins.
36:46I was happy with it, definitely.
36:52I am so excited with how it turned out.
36:54I added some extra netting to just take it even further away from looking like a tablecloth.
36:59I feel like I have the sexiest outfit out there.
37:04We've scored your designs.
37:06Will the following designers please step forward?
37:09Daniel.
37:12Jerry.
37:15Kato.
37:17Stella.
37:20Kelly.
37:22Blaine.
37:26If I have not called your name, congratulations.
37:29Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
37:33You can leave the runway.
37:35The six remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
37:48One of you will be named the winner.
37:50And one of you will be out.
37:54Let's bring out your models.
37:55Daniel, tell us a little bit about your design.
38:06My design is a cocktail dress and it's made from plastic cups.
38:11I think it stood out from all the others because it really felt like you took a material that wasn't a fabric substitute and did something just unique with it.
38:20I really like the sculptural form.
38:23I like the fact that you took a chance.
38:26I like this.
38:27I think you could have gone further with the silhouette, but I think it's a very creative, smart use of a material in an unexpected way.
38:36I mean, who knew that you could steam the plastic cup?
38:39It took some manipulating.
38:41I was freaking out and I'd been bleeding all over the place.
38:44You suffered for fetch.
38:45It's a great dress and I love that there are plastic cups.
38:50I think it's genius.
38:52Thank you very much.
38:54Jerry.
38:56In House Wars I picked up a shower curtain with these amazing curtain hooks that I used as fasteners.
39:01And then I also pulled out strips of gauze and I created a little mini summer dress.
39:05I mean, honestly, she turned the corner and I was like, is she like a bridal nurse?
39:12Just the visual of it is just, it's freaky.
39:16And the dress underneath just looks like a handy wipe gone wrong.
39:20Who was wearing this and where are they going?
39:23Out on a night on the town.
39:25A night out in the town.
39:27After she left the hospital.
39:29The gloves are a bit hospital plumber.
39:33In terms of shape, I don't see any innovation.
39:37In terms of color, I don't see it.
39:39I just felt like you could have stepped it up a bit.
39:42It doesn't strike me as being that creative.
39:48Kato, tell us a little bit about your design.
39:52In my design, I used a paper tablecloth.
39:55I did want to do something that was different.
39:57The tomatoes, I cut them open to make it look like it was like different brooches kind of stuck on there.
40:02I just wanted to do something pretty and something that you could actually wear somewhere out one night.
40:07Overall, I thought your design was very chic and you actually used something alive, a fresh grocery product.
40:15Very, very nice job with that.
40:17I do appreciate very much the fact that it looks impeccably done.
40:24It's the right girl in the right dress, styled the right way.
40:28She's got a great look.
40:33Stella, tell us about your outfit.
40:34I just unrolled the whole roll of garbage bag and I draped it all around and then I just started sewing it.
40:43That's what I did. I just sewed the whole thing by hand.
40:46Well, there's no transformation. I mean, she turned the corner and she's in garbage bags.
40:50The dress is just, it's a yawn.
40:52I would have liked to have seen maybe you tried the stitching with an actual material.
40:56Maybe you could have like slashed the plastic itself and stitched it that way or done something a little more interesting than the thread.
41:02I have to say, I am not impressed. To me, it looks like I just did something because I had to do something.
41:12Kelly Kelly, tell us about your design.
41:14I made it out of vacuum cleaner bags that I bleached and dyed. I burnt coffee filters for the bust part. And in the back, I made hook and eyes for a closure out of the spiral of a notebook.
41:30I like the way you think. It shows me that you are resourceful. I think it's great.
41:34When you look in closely, you see all the detail and all the different techniques that went into making this one dress.
41:42You pushed the envelope and made something that I think that girls are going to want to wear.
41:47Thank you very much.
41:49And last but not least, Blaine. What is this?
41:53This is girlicious. Everything is made out of cupboard, linings, and jump rope.
41:58The last thing I wanted to do is send down something that would bore you.
42:03Oh, it's definitely not boring.
42:05It's a little bit bunnyish. Playboy bunny gone grunge.
42:09My first impression was the diaper thing was a bit jarring. I just felt it made it look a little cheap.
42:15When she first turned the corner, I was like, oh, my God, we're having the wrestling challenge.
42:19Oh, no. I mean, it's provocative.
42:21Do I think it's pretty? No.
42:24Even though it's kind of crazy and a little bit out there, I like the fact that you have ideas.
42:29And I like the fact that you are creative.
42:32Okay. We've heard what you had to say. We're going to have a little chat.
42:36And then I'm going to call you back. You can leave the runway. Thank you.
42:39So, which ones did you love?
42:53Kelly's design. The dyeing was gorgeous. Not only was it creative, it was actually pretty.
42:59She took something and she added an artistic technique and put so much work and thought into every little detail.
43:05She found a possibility in everything.
43:07Daniel did the dress with the cups.
43:12I mean, just the material you would never, ever think of that would create a dress.
43:17And it was sexy.
43:19Why out of anything in the store?
43:20Why the cups?
43:21Let me run to those plastic cups.
43:23He had that bravado and that confidence.
43:26I think that that is something that you cannot learn. You either have it or you don't.
43:32Let's go to Kato.
43:33I give her low marks for resorting to the tablecloth, but I give her high marks for the overall visual impact of how her girl looked.
43:45She was the one designer who chose some fresh produce out of them all.
43:49She has good taste.
43:51Yeah.
43:52I could see that.
43:55Let's move on to the ones that we didn't like.
43:58Stella.
43:59She's coming from the sort of punky point of view.
44:02And that was there. It was just maybe not the best luck on that challenge.
44:05I mean, that was just butt ugly. That was horrible.
44:08Doesn't make me curious.
44:09No.
44:12Jerry.
44:14I saw something that looked strange.
44:18Then it had this weird Batman thing going on. My son would have loved it, you know?
44:22Running around the house.
44:24It looked like something you'd wear if you were going to be in a slasher movie costume.
44:28It's what you would wear if you're killing someone.
44:30Killing someone.
44:31Let's talk about Blaine for a second.
44:37Let's be honest. It did look like she had an old diaper pushed in between her legs.
44:42I understand he wants to be edgy, but was it really executed?
44:46When it first came out, I wrote hideous on my card.
44:51So we've made our decision?
44:53I think we have.
44:55Let's bring them back out.
45:01The six of you represent the best and the worst.
45:08One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
45:14One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
45:19Kato.
45:20Yes.
45:21You're in.
45:22You can leave the runway.
45:26And now for the winner.
45:27Congratulations.
45:28Kelly.
45:29Kelly.
45:34Thank you so much.
45:35You're the winner of this challenge, and you will also have immunity for the next challenge,
45:39and you cannot be eliminated.
45:40You can leave the runway.
45:42Thank you guys.
45:43Congratulations.
45:48I know that I'm good, and I know I have the skills, and it's not a conceited factor.
45:53It's just me being confident and knowing that I have what it takes.
45:58Daniel, very good work.
45:59You can leave the runway.
46:00You're in.
46:27You're in you can leave the runway
46:38Jerry Stella one of you will be out
46:47Jerry your look was not wearable. It was memorable, but not really in a good way
46:53Stella you took the easy way out and you still didn't deliver. We're unclear of who you are as a designer
47:10Jerry
47:14You're out that means tell are you in you can leave the runway
47:23He doesn't Jerry
47:36My experience on project runway was completely a roller coaster
47:40I went from a high to low to a high to a low and then the ride just ended Jerry
47:45We barely got to know you we're going to miss you. I need to send you upstairs to clean up your space
47:50I'm walking away feeling a little sad, but I know I would gave it an honest and good try
48:04I am a true designer I
48:07Make beautiful clothes, and I know that's what people want and that's what I'm gonna give them
48:15This season on project runway, it's a project runway first
48:20I am freaking out
48:25The stress was getting to everybody you kind of didn't really help me out whatever
48:31It's a pterodactyl out of a gay Jurassic Park. I don't have anything. She didn't do it. I just need to know what you want

48:41Holla at your boy
48:43It looks like a school project to me slutty slutty slutty
48:46I'm just really puzzled that you would go this direction. I'm freaking out like I'm about to have a breakdown
