00:00Hey everyone, it's season 11.
00:07This is my favorite season ever.
00:09This one has a little twist.
00:12I'll say.
00:13As always, we have a whole group of new designers ready to compete.
00:18But none of these talented designers really know what we have in store for them.
00:23No, this is what I call a real twist.
00:26Teams.
00:27Teams.
00:28Yes, you heard us right.
00:29Teams.
00:31This season every challenge is a team challenge.
00:34But there will only be one winner.
00:36Every successful designer works as part of a team.
00:39This season is what fashion is really about.
00:42Everyone has to work together and collaborate.
00:44Communicate.
00:45Work it out.
00:46It's just like the real world and this is exactly why this is my favorite season.
00:50Mhm.
00:51Welcome back to Project Runway season 11.
00:54It's all about teamwork.
00:56This is Project Runway.
00:58My name is Liana Aguilar.
01:03I'm 28 and I'm originally from Brazil but I've been in New York for three years.
01:08I couldn't sleep last night having dreams about garments that I'm going to make and I'm freaking out.
01:13Oh my God, this is real.
01:14My name is Richard Hallmark and I'm from Sacramento, the other fashion capital.
01:30What's your name?
01:31Layana.
01:32Nice to meet you.
01:33Nice to meet you.
01:34I'm Richard.
01:35Hey.
01:36Hello.
01:37This moment is definitely a dream come true.
01:39Oh my God, guys.
01:40We're here.
01:41I'm really type A personality so as a preference I'm a lone wolf but as a bridal designer I have my own company so I have to delegate.
01:51If I had my way I'd just clone myself and I would do everything.
01:54Sorry to interrupt.
01:55It's okay.
01:56This is kind of crazy.
01:57Michelle Lesniak Franklin, 30 fedorable.
02:01It's a lot bigger than I thought it would be.
02:04My point of view as a designer is what I like to call geek chic.
02:08A very vivacious, confident woman that could recite the periodic table of the elements.
02:19This is my first time here in New York City and this is crazy.
02:22I'm really excited to be here.
02:23Hello.
02:24My name is Daniel Esquivel.
02:25I'm 48 years old and I'm from Austin, Texas.
02:28Being bullied, I did drop out of school in the ninth grade.
02:31I am not formally trained, I'm self-taught.
02:33Oh my God.
02:34This is crazy.
02:35Hi.
02:36Hi.
02:37Hey.
02:38Hi.
02:39I'm Kate.
02:40Nice to meet you, Patricia.
02:44My name is James.
02:45I'm 29 years of age and I'm from Dallas.
02:50Way to make an entrance.
02:51Hi, Michelle.
02:52Very nice to meet you.
02:53Hey there.
02:54Hi.
02:55Hey.
02:56I'm Kate.
02:57Nice to meet you.
02:58Hi.
02:59My name is Emily.
03:00I'm 24 years old and I'm from Falls Church, Virginia.
03:03Hi, Mr. Evelyn Daniel.
03:04Nice to meet you.
03:05Nice to meet you.
03:06I know funny.
03:07Stanley, good to meet you.
03:08Hi.
03:09Kate.
03:10Hey, Kate.
03:11What's your name?
03:12Hi, James.
03:13Two.
03:14Two?
03:15Yes.
03:16Two.
03:17Hi.
03:18I'm Cindy.
03:19I went to this school.
03:20Hi, Matt.
03:21Hi, I'm Richard.
03:22Where are you from?
03:23I'm from New Orleans.
03:24Where are you from?
03:25I come from Sydney, Australia.
03:27At the moment, I am living in London.
03:29My husband and I own a funeral home.
03:31I'm a funeral director.
03:32Oh, cool.
03:33After 23 years of running a funeral home with my husband, I was really feeling a creative
03:40void in my life, so I enrolled in design school and I graduated this year.
03:46I would never guess that.
03:47You're so cheery.
03:48Wow.
03:49Oh, I'm cheery.
03:50This is a cheery business in a way.
03:52Yeah.
03:53I love it.
03:54Guys, guys, guys, everyone.
03:55Look at that saddle.
03:56Oh, my God.
03:57Oh, my God.
03:58Well, I guess we should let our designers in on our little twist.
04:04Hi, there.
04:13Hi.
04:14Welcome to season 11 of Project Runway.
04:19Well, we're thrilled to have you here.
04:22We want to welcome you to Parsons, the new school for design.
04:25And also, congratulations, because thousands of people wanted to be in your shoes and you
04:32were chosen.
04:33There are 16 of you here now, but at the end, there will only be one winner.
04:37You're going to be competing in challenges to prove to the judges that you have the talent
04:41and the distinct point of view to be the next great American fashion designer.
04:46Tonight, you will move into your apartments, Project Runway's original New York home at
04:51the Atlas, Gotham's luxury apartment building in Manhattan's fashion district.
04:56But this season is a little twist.
05:03This season is Project Runway.
05:06Teams.
05:07Lord have mercy.
05:08Not that I'm not a team player, I just like to be on my own team.
05:17Every challenge will be a team challenge.
05:20Do you guys like working in teams?
05:22Yes.
05:23It could be done.
05:24Really?
05:25Let's see about that.
05:27I'm very excited about this because the real world is about teams.
05:30And especially in fashion, no one works alone.
05:33And as we begin this season, you're going to be divided into two teams of eight.
05:38If I call your name, you will be sitting on the left.
05:41If I don't call your name, you're sitting on the right.
05:44And these will be your teams.
05:46Daniel.
05:47Amanda.
05:48Layana.
05:49Richard.
05:50Patricia.
05:52Joe.
05:54Stanley.
05:56Kate.
05:58The rest of you have a seat on the right side of the room.
06:04Now that you're in your teams, do you want to hear about your first challenge?
06:08Yes.
06:09We don't play around here on Project Runway.
06:11We get right to it.
06:13Your challenge is to create a garment that shows us who you are as a designer, with the input
06:18of your team to guide you.
06:20We want you to have a good comprehensive understanding of the overwhelming
06:26overall design aesthetic of each member of your team.
06:29Because you're only as strong as your weakest link.
06:33We still want to see who you are as an individual.
06:36You know, you have to just do that in a team setting.
06:39There will be a winning design team and a losing design team.
06:42One member of the winning team will be the winner of this challenge and one from the losing team
06:48will be out.
06:49Your inspiration for this challenge is New York City.
06:55But each team will have a different perspective.
06:57The team over here will have a point of view from afar.
07:01You will take a boat out to the Hudson and look back onto the city.
07:06The team over here will have a view from New York City from above.
07:11You will go to the roof of the Atlas, which has an amazing panoramic view.
07:18So, I'm going to see all of you in the morning.
07:21And I have to say, I'll see you back here on the runway.
07:24Let's get out of here, Tim.
07:26All right, honey.
07:27I'll go anywhere with you.
07:28See you tomorrow.
07:33Holy cow.
07:34Getting onto the roof is amazing.
07:37I mean, we have the greatest view of the city.
07:40Wow.
07:41I'm so happy to be in here.
07:43Damn.
07:44To the win.
07:45Yes!
07:46Yay!
07:51Our inspiration for the first challenge is New York City from a far distance.
07:56Oh.
07:57So good.
07:59Our team name is Keeping It Real.
08:01I thought of it on accident.
08:03I said it out loud and all of a sudden, some of the people around were like,
08:06that's it, we're keeping it real.
08:08Yay!
08:10I'm super excited.
08:11Yay!
08:12I know.
08:13Come on, y'all.
08:14We got to do it.
08:15We got to do it.
08:16Right now, my profession is I am a costumer.
08:17I work on productions to provide all the wardrobe.
08:20My point of view is bringing the essence of couture into ready-to-wear
08:24and actually bringing it to the masses.
08:29Woo!
08:30Cheers to getting to know everybody and winning.
08:32To success.
08:33To success.
08:34Salud.
08:35Salud.
08:36Salud.
08:37We just have to help each other as teammates.
08:42Right.
08:43Our team name is Dream Team because I came up with Team Work Makes the Dream Work,
08:49and everyone's cool with it.
08:50Mmm, this looks so yummy.
08:52Is that Brooklyn Bridge?
09:05Hello, my name is Patricia Michaels, and my native name is Water Lily.
09:09As far as I know, I'm the first Native American designer to get to Project Runway.
09:14It's got some beautiful old architecture on this side.
09:17I went to college at the Institute of American Indian Arts, and then after that, you know,
09:21Chicago Art Institute, and I never stopped.
09:23I'm more than honored to be a strong voice for Native Americans as far as design is concerned.
09:29Yes.
09:30Oh, I love that.
09:31Whoa!
09:32That's our prayer.
09:33It's a lot to take in right now.
09:34You know, it's very overwhelming, but it's very cool overwhelming.
09:35Coming up on Project Runway.
09:36No, no.
09:37I'm gonna panic.
09:38Yai yai.
09:39Oh, my God.
09:40What the hell is wrong with you?
09:42That could come to bite us in the end.
09:44Here we are, folks.
09:45We are home.
09:46This is a good real estate.
09:47This is a good real estate.
10:14To be in the workroom, it was like a big wave of fashion hit me.
10:19Oh, my God.
10:22Each team has their sides.
10:24You can feel the excitement in there.
10:25Yeah.
10:26Cool.
10:27Hey, everybody.
10:31Wow.
10:32What a lovely reception.
10:35I want to welcome you to your workspace at the 1407 Broadway Building.
10:39This is going to be your home away from home for a while.
10:41We have the Brothers Sewing Room.
10:43It's behind the Lord & Taylor accessory wall, which will be very important for your styling.
10:48And down the hall, we have the L'Oreal Paris hair and makeup rooms.
10:51And we're thrilled to be partnering with HP again.
10:54You each have an HP tablet.
10:56And I just want you to know, the HP and Intel technology will really help elevate your creativity.
11:01It's a wonderful tool to have.
11:02I have to also tell you, one of the things I'm most excited about with Season 11 is the fact that you are working in teams.
11:08I love the whole concept.
11:10Remember, it's your design.
11:12But part of this challenge is to get to know your teammates and take advantage of their feedback and support.
11:18We are going to be shopping at Mood, our first Mood trip.
11:23Each team will have $1,200.
11:26That translates to $150 per designer.
11:30But if you as a team want to distribute the money differently, it's your decision to make.
11:35Your runway presentation is tomorrow.
11:37So you have one day for this challenge.
11:39Sketch, caucus, huddle.
11:40And then I'll come and get you and we'll head off to Mood.
11:44Thank you, everyone.
11:50All right, design teams.
11:52Let's head off to Mood.
11:54This is a good one.
11:55Designers, you have ten minutes remaining.
12:04Time's up.
12:05Everyone needs to be at the counter.
12:10Hi, how are our design teams?
12:29Hi.
12:30Well, I'm here to check in with you and I'm very excited about it.
12:33Yay!
12:34Dream team, I just want you to know, we've never worked this way before in Project Runway.
12:37We're all going to participate in this process together, giving good, honest, thoughtful feedback.
12:43And I'm here to moderate, to participate, and to facilitate.
12:48So, Michelle, tell us about the look you're creating.
12:51My sketch that I had done was very sort of structured.
12:54And then on top of it, sort of a modern take of a pinafore.
12:58I'm really favorably, I'll use the word, wowed.
13:02Oh, thanks.
13:03This is planned to be a short dress over a slim pant.
13:09What do you all think?
13:10Do you really need a pant?
13:11I mean, so far it's looking like a beautiful dress.
13:13Yeah, I think so too.
13:14And do you think it should be long?
13:16It seems to me to make more sense when you see the full length of it.
13:20Yeah.
13:21Yeah.
13:22And see, this would look really good with a top, and then doing that with a black, right?
13:26So we could say, either the panels would be matted, or the whole top would be matted.
13:30I do have a slight concern that this might not be enough.
13:34If it's very fitted on the bottom, think about perhaps more volume on the top.
13:38Okay.
13:39There's going to be lots of strips of the chiffon.
13:42I'm working with a few different colors to break it up.
13:44This is good.
13:45I'm going to do a rock on sleeve.
13:46It's going to look like a building.
13:48Emily.
13:49Well, I'm making a really built out, like, architectural jacket.
13:54And then, as far as the dress goes, I like black and blue together.
13:58So I'm going to panel them so that it mimics the building.
14:01Do you have too much happening?
14:03Is there too much going on?
14:04That's what I'm kind of struggling with right now.
14:07Well, let us help you.
14:08If you needed to lose one of the ideas, you can lose the jacket.
14:12But you can't send someone down a runway wearing just the jacket.
14:15I'm really impressed with you all, as individuals and as a group.
14:19All right, thank you.
14:21Now, keeping it real.
14:23Kate.
14:24What I did is I created this really soft, textured, like, sweater dress, basically.
14:29If you take the sleeve off, it'll, like, sex it up with the sheer.
14:32I feel like this makes it more sophisticated, though.
14:36No sleeves.
14:37Do you think I should get rid of the sleeve?
14:38I'll get rid of it.
14:39Oh, yeah.
14:40It's not a conservative dress.
14:41Okay.
14:42I love to play with, like, the line.
14:44And I like sharp and va-va-voom, but in a very classy and feminine way.
14:50But then, boom.
14:53I love molded shoulders.
14:55And then peplum is going to be like this all the way around.
14:57And then, of course, it's just with a slim pant underneath because I'm going to leave it very simple.
15:01Excellent.
15:02I have this, and it's going to be a simple shift, with slashes.
15:05How much slashing are you doing?
15:07I would do it all over.
15:09Okay, so just have fun with it.
15:11Yeah.
15:12I mean, yeah.
15:13This is very compelling, all of it.
15:16Time to get back to work.
15:17Yes.
15:19Thank you, everyone.
15:21This is our power hour.
15:22I hope.
15:24Oh, hello.
15:25Hi.
15:26Hi.
15:27I'm so lucky.
15:28I'm so excited.
15:29I love the way this looks.
15:30You come out.
15:31I need you to walk for your life.
15:34You look a little stressed.
15:35How are you doing today?
15:36I'm okay.
15:37That's looking so beautiful, Patricia.
15:40Oh, thank you.
15:42I look up at the clock, and I barely have anything.
15:46It's really time to reevaluate everything that I'm doing.
15:49Oh, my God.
15:50What the hell is wrong with you?
15:52Like, we told you in our critique, don't get bogged down trying to figure out multiple pieces.
15:57Just work on something.
15:58Get a dress made.
15:59Hey, everybody.
16:01Time's up for the night.
16:03It's time to pack up and go.
16:05I don't have a single piece of clothing put together.
16:10Do you want us to rally tomorrow and help you out?
16:16You guys excited for today's runway?
16:23I'm really nervous, and I think I might end up going home.
16:27Good luck, guys.
16:29They're doing it!
16:37I can't believe that I'm using glue right now.
16:40Good morning, designers.
16:42How is everyone?
16:43Good morning.
16:44You will have two hours to send your models to the L'Oreal Paris Hair and Makeup Rooms.
16:48The styling of these looks is very important.
16:50So, of course, for your styling, you'll be using the Lord & Taylor accessory wall.
16:54Use it very thoughtfully.
16:56All right?
16:57Thank you, everyone.
16:58Thank you, Kim.
17:02We're ready to rock and roll, sister.
17:04Just a very pale face, maybe a rosy cheek.
17:13I'm thinking really bright, kind of coral lip.
17:16Then use this kiss.
17:17It's like, ooh, just go.
17:19That one's really beautiful.
17:20I like the orange in there.
17:21Yeah.
17:27I'm thinking just really beautiful blowout.
17:29So, we'll put a little, uh, glute lift in there, just get a little volume.
17:33Yeah.
17:34It's really, like, sleek back ponytail because I need to show.
17:39Powerful, chic.
17:40Okay.
17:41Yes, definitely.
17:42Whatever style shine, Sarah will give it a really nice polish.
17:46Where's my thread?
17:48Designers, you and your models and I are going down to the runway for our first runway show.
17:55It's very exciting.
17:57So, please follow me.
18:12Hi, everybody.
18:13Hi.
18:14Welcome to the runway.
18:15As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day, you're out.
18:20There are 16 of you here, and after tonight, there will be 15.
18:23For this season of Project Runway, every challenge will be a team challenge.
18:27You have to collaborate, communicate, and work together to be successful.
18:31For this first challenge, we divided you into teams of eight.
18:35Your inspiration was none other than New York City.
18:38We asked you to create an individual look that showcases your point of view as a designer.
18:42The winner of Project Runway will receive $50,000 in technology and office space from HP and Intel
18:48to bring your creativity to life and run your business.
18:52A fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine.
18:54A 2013 Lexus GS.
18:56Oh, wow.
18:57Wow.
18:58That's crazy.
19:00$100,000 from Laurel Paris Advanced Hair Care to start your own line.
19:05Wow.
19:06And the chance to design and sell an exclusive collection at Lord & Taylor.
19:10Wow.
19:11Cool, right?
19:12All right.
19:13Oh, my gosh.
19:14And the model paired with the winner of Project Runway will win a fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine
19:19and $25,000 from Laurel Paris Advanced Hair Care.
19:22Okay, let's meet the judges.
19:24First, we have a new judge to introduce.
19:27We are very excited to welcome acclaimed fashion designer, Zach Posen.
19:31Hey.
19:32Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
19:36Welcome, designers.
19:39And our guest judge for today, who was once in your shoes, fashion designer Christian Siriano.
19:44Hi.
19:45Hello.
19:46We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
19:49One member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge.
19:52And one member from the losing team will be out.
19:56Okay, let's start the show.
19:57I'm so excited.
20:08She looks amazing.
20:09It looks so good.
20:10I am so confident about my direction, my point of view.
20:17Everything about me is presented in this design, and it's flawless.
20:22I love the way it turned out.
20:30My model is walking it out.
20:32I'm just so happy.
20:39I did what I set out to do, and I'm proud of myself.
20:42My dress looks beautiful coming down the runway.
20:52Very sporty.
20:57It just glows and flows.
20:58I realized I've achieved my vision.
21:09Perfect.
21:10I'm completely excited.
21:17The material, it's got this little slight subtle movement to it, and I'm loving it.
21:27I'm watching my model walk down the runway, and she feels like she's almost my girl.
21:33Almost.
21:34I could have taken it to a little punchier level, but I finally feel like I might not go home.
21:41Are you happy?
21:42I'm okay with it.
21:43I'm happy with my garment, and it does represent myself, but I feel like it just doesn't stand out.
21:58I know I could have done so much better.
22:00I was playing too safe.
22:01I hope we win, so I don't have to worry about it.
22:05As my model is walking down the runway, I'm feeling a little better about the dress because it looks decent.
22:18I am seeing that it has a different point of view than from the other designers, and I'm hoping that the judges can see that in a positive way.
22:26This suit represents me, my point of view as a designer, and my aesthetic and my tailoring skills.
22:38I made that outfit in one day, and it totally rocked.
22:44The other team, there's some pieces that I don't love, but the majority of what they do, I really, really love.
22:58They definitely have more drama, and they definitely look more finished than my teams.
23:04I'm feeling a little worried.
23:14She looks adorable.
23:15I'm super excited.
23:17This is probably the most surreal moment I've ever had.
23:25I'm just happy.
23:26It looks so good.
23:33I'm feeling good because it's like floating.
23:35My garment actually looks nice and looks like something I feel the judges like.
23:54I feel very confident about my look.
23:56I hope, like, the judges, they're gonna like it.
24:06I like the dark thing too.
24:08Thank you, thank you.
24:15As my look comes down the runway, I feel really good about it just because it's clean and classic.
24:20I'm just very eager to see what the judges have to say about it.
24:29Really good.
24:30Very good.
24:38I'm, like, horrified at this mess I've put together.
24:42I can't believe that I sent that down the runway.
24:44My team has to win this challenge, and if we don't, I know I'm in trouble.
25:01I could not be happier.
25:06Okay, I'm happy.
25:07I can breathe.
25:09It just couldn't have represented me any better as a designer,
25:12and I'm so ecstatic that this is what the judges are seeing first off.
25:23As my look comes down the runway, I am really happy with it.
25:39I think it's beautiful.
25:42I feel great about my look.
25:48I'm using a material that no one has used before.
25:51It's this waxed denim.
25:53It's got a really strong conviction and will of character for the woman that's wearing it.
25:59I think that it's the strongest look of our team.
26:01I'm seeing on the runway that the other team definitely had a few struggles in their collection, and I would have had to have said something if I was on that team.
26:14There's like several strong pieces within their collection, but I'm still confident about my team.
26:27Designers, there will be a winning team and a losing team.
26:31One member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge, and one member from the losing team will be out.
26:38Designers, one member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge, and one member from the losing team will be out.
26:54Team keeping it real, you are the winning team.
27:00You are the winning team.
27:09Dream team, you are the losing team.
27:12We're going to talk to the top three designers from the winning team first, and then we will talk to the bottom three from the losing team.
27:19Dream team, thank you, you can leave the runway.
27:28Daniel, Richard, Patricia, you have the highest scores.
27:34Oh, thank you.
27:36Let's bring out your models.
27:41Daniel, tell us about your look.
27:42We had taken a boat ride on the river, and I got inspiration from the shapes of the buildings that were along the river.
27:48And so I just did a really simple classic silk wool crepe suit with a skinny pant.
27:53And here it is.
27:55I am very impressed.
27:57She looks super chic, and it looks super expensive.
28:00I like the fact that you gave her a shorter sleeve, the shorter pant, and it could be done in many colors.
28:08Colors, yeah.
28:09There's no zipper in the front, right?
28:10No, it just crosses over.
28:12I think the neckline is really beautiful, but very subtle.
28:14But I think it's really, really chic.
28:16Did you like the team dynamic?
28:18Oh, yes.
28:19Everybody here, we all get along, because we have to work together to move forward.
28:23Thank you, Daniel.
28:25Richard, tell us about your look.
28:26I'm from California, and upon landing at the airport, all I saw was buildings and concrete, and I'm used to trees and stuff everywhere.
28:33So immediately when we got this challenge assigned to us, I thought of gray and balanced it with black.
28:40I think it looks very urban.
28:41It's easy, it's sporty, but I also see the influence of New York.
28:47I like that you played with asymmetry, and it's flattering, which through asymmetry is not the easiest.
28:53I like your dress a lot.
28:54I like it that it has one short sleeve and one long sleeve.
28:57It's like a great basic, but you don't look schlumpy in it.
29:01Thank you, Richard.
29:02Thanks.
29:03Patricia, tell us about your look.
29:04As we were leaving the city and we were on the boat, I started to see the different shapes of the windows.
29:12And then I thought of the Cubist artists, and I said, okay, maybe if I work in my design aesthetics of hand printing fabric.
29:22And then it was really important to keep the blue coming through, because in fashion you want something that's exciting and electric.
29:30So I chose that really strong cobalt blue, and then when they turn around...
29:35She's a talker, yes or no?
29:37I know! Sorry!
29:39She's a talker.
29:40I really love how you manipulated the leather.
29:44To have the idea to do that, I think is genius.
29:47I like that they look like little cityscapes, but I think the time and effort of all the handwork, I think is why it's such a great piece.
29:55I think it was a good idea to keep the shape very simple, because otherwise I think it would have missed on all that work that you've done.
30:05And I think those little panels gives it a movement, which that shape doesn't really have.
30:12Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
30:14You can leave the runway.
30:18Dream Team, you are the losing team.
30:25James, Cindy, and Emily, the three of you have the lowest scores on your team.
30:32Okay, let's bring out your models.
30:38Okay, I'm going to start with you, James.
30:40Tell us about your look.
30:41I personally love doing a lot of color blocking, and initially the top was to be color blocked as well, but the team decided that it would be too simple and that I needed some more detail.
30:55Do you think that they steered you maybe in the wrong direction?
30:58I just really wish that I would have stuck with my gut feeling on the first initial design that I did.
31:03To me, the pleating on top looks a little chewed up. The whole thing feels a little pedestrian.
31:07There's nothing wrong with your outfit. It is just not inspiring. It doesn't say anything to me about what you're about.
31:17There were actually some great pieces that came down the runway from you guys. Like two, for example, I really liked yours. The black and white was really cool.
31:24Love it.
31:26And Benjamin, we actually liked yours as well. Where there is really like something really that we hadn't seen before.
31:31You know, when you make a pencil skirt, there's just not enough there. Thank you.
31:37Emily, tell us about your look.
31:40Okay. Well, originally there was going to be kind of a fitted dress that was going to be out of this fabric.
31:48And I just, I think I realized I was drowning way too late in the game and just, I really ran out of time.
31:54I don't know what went wrong here, but it looks like my eight-year-old daughter made it.
31:58It looks like the sewing machine just ate it up.
32:00Can I see the back? For a second, in the sleeve and in the shoulder, I'm kind of thinking that you have some type of sculptural innovation idea, which I kind of would have wanted to see.
32:13Can we see what this looks like when you take this thing off?
32:15I mean, it's like a shredded piece of, I have to say that in 11 seasons that we've done this, I have never seen such an unfinished garment walk down the runway.
32:31And team, could anybody have lent her some fabric?
32:33Yes, and we helped her construct this. I mean, as of this morning, she had nothing.
32:38She really had good ideas and it's just, it's unfortunate to see.
32:41The designs there, the sketches were amazing that we saw.
32:45I see what you and your team members see in what's happening right there. I get it. But I think it's really important to have your craft ready to go.
32:55Obviously, taste, design eye, craft and a hand are what it's going to take to win this competition. So, you know, I think you have to find at least something within that, that you are strong at and bring it.
33:10I agree. Thank you, Emily.
33:12Thanks.
33:13Okay, Cindy, you're next.
33:14From the rooftop of the Atlas, I saw a building that had a checkerboard pattern painted on the side. And when I saw this print at Mood, it reminded me of the colors of the city. It's all just kind of jumbled and muted and running together.
33:32Did anyone give you thumbs up, thumbs down, sideways?
33:34This was planned to be kind of a long top over narrow navy pants. But the team thought that this print was so beautiful that I should extend it and show more of the print.
33:47Can you guys raise your hand who thought this print was so beautiful?
33:51I actually thought it was really pretty.
33:53Well, pretty compared to, it was going to be a shirt that went to her knee with pants. And as a team, we felt like if you're going to do that, you might as well use as a gown because you could see the whole entire print.
34:04It makes more sense for what you're trying to do with that fabric.
34:07To me, this dress is not attractive at all. I love mixing patterns, but they kind of got to go together.
34:14There is nothing New York about this. There's nothing urban about it.
34:20I actually think maybe I'm the only one that's a little bit excited that it is a gown because I think with like a navy pant, then you would have had four different fabrications and it would have been even worse.
34:29But I do think that it has, you know, no kind of design or quality to it.
34:33I want to know who you are as a designer. And this is confusing to me.
34:36This is not me.
34:38Well, this is the first challenge. So I really, you know, I want to see who you are as a designer.
34:43I don't think the construction is that interesting and the prints are sort of jarring together. It's hard for me.
34:50Thank you, Cindy.
34:51The sad thing is I gave your team a lot of high scores, but the low ones really overpowered the highs.
35:00Keep that in mind. You have to look out for your team.
35:02If you have one hole in a boat, the whole boat sinks.
35:05Okay. We've heard what you had to say. We're going to have a little chat. You can use the runway. Thank you.
35:09Before we start talking about specific designers, I just want to talk about the team challenge, which I think is kind of great.
35:19I mean, it's a little scary because you're really dependent on other people.
35:23I like it because it's another set of eyes that are going to be giving an opinion and hopefully the bar gets raised.
35:32They judge them before we get to judge them.
35:34They have to decide if they're being truthful with their advice.
35:37Because when it gets down, like, what if they're telling each other it's not so good or if it is good?
35:41They're going to be like, this is great. What are you doing?
35:45And as the competition goes on, the good souls and good hearts will come through.
35:49Okay. Let's talk about the designers that we did like.
35:52Keeping it real was the winning team.
35:55I really like this team.
35:56I liked how collaborative they were with each other.
35:59They loved each other.
36:00Let's talk about Patricia.
36:01We don't really see that that much, that people actually go and manipulate the fabric to that extent.
36:07She painted it. She did an interesting overlay.
36:10I think she brings an artistic element.
36:13Absolutely. Which I love.
36:15Yes, we love.
36:16I like that she's a strong female point of view. We'll see where it goes.
36:19Let's talk about Daniel.
36:21What he did in one day was pretty amazing.
36:24Beautiful. That shoulder, to do that shoulder is tough.
36:26That jacket is interesting and it was beautifully done.
36:30Let's talk about Richard.
36:32It's straightforward. It's a jersey dress and it worked and that's urban in New York.
36:36You can dress it up, you can dress it down, you can wear the combat boots, you can wear the ballerina flats, you can wear high heels.
36:41It's got a versatility to it. It's kind of a no-brainer.
36:45It looked effortless and easy and I think that sometimes can be harder than creating something like Daniel's which is sculptural and tailored.
36:52Sometimes the most effortless dress is the hardest to create.
36:55Okay, let's talk about the dream team that wasn't so great.
36:59Well, the team wasn't that bad.
37:01It's just that there were some lower moments in the presentation.
37:05Let's talk about James.
37:07I mean, James really didn't do a whole lot.
37:10It was very mall.
37:11It was like intern couture.
37:13It was the shell.
37:14The chewed up shell.
37:15The shell was packed.
37:17Let's talk about Cindy.
37:18Am I wrong?
37:19How was this inspired by New York?
37:22The dress felt old and sad.
37:24Yes.
37:25It was not necessarily the most tasteful.
37:27Emily, really, I don't know.
37:30Really, that was butt ugly.
37:33I mean, I agree.
37:34I mean, wow.
37:36It was a hot mess.
37:37I mean, a shredded hot mess.
37:40But I have to say, I thought it was interesting when I asked the designers
37:44if they thought she had any potential.
37:48That's what I was asking them.
37:49They said yes.
37:50I saw what they were seeing, which was a fabric and a storyboard.
37:53And her team liked her, so.
37:55Yeah.
37:56Okay, so we've made our decision.
38:00Great.
38:01Let's bring them back up.
38:02The six of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
38:14One of you from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge.
38:19And one of you from the losing team will be out.
38:23Daniel.
38:24Daniel.
38:28Congratulations.
38:29You are the winner of this challenge.
38:32First challenge.
38:33Thank you, thank you very much.
38:34You're in.
38:35You can leave the runway.
38:37You're in.
38:38You can leave the runway.
38:40Congratulations. You are the winner of this challenge.
38:44First challenge!
38:48Thank you. Thank you very much. You're in. You can leave the runway.
38:56Words can't explain how... Happy I am
39:00to win this first challenge.
39:04They took notice of me out of everybody.
39:08Richard, you're in. You can leave the runway. Thank you.
39:12Patricia, you're also in. You can leave the runway.
39:20James, you're in. You can leave the runway.
39:24Thank you so much.
39:28Cindy, Emily,
39:32one of you will be out. Cindy...
39:38You're in.
39:42You can leave the runway.
39:46Emily, I'm sorry. That means you're out.
39:50Thanks for that thank you.
39:52Auf Wiedersehen.
39:56It sucks being out first.
39:58I'm just kind of sad that I didn't even get to show the judges what I could really do.
40:02Aw, Emily!
40:04Where's the band?
40:06You've tried and...
40:08It's just really disappointing.
40:10You know,
40:12as wonderful as it is to be on the runway,
40:14this is always going to be an outcome.
40:16So I have to send you to the work room to clean up your space.
40:18Okay?
40:20Bye, guys.
40:22See you on the other side.
40:24Dream team.
40:26Dream team.
40:28Dream team.
40:30Dream team.
40:32Dream team.
40:34Dream team.
40:36Dream team.
40:38Dream team.
40:48I feel like this whole experience is going to help me get my priorities straight.
40:50It's definitely given me a lot to think about as far as what I want to do and what I am even able to do.
40:58I came here looking for direction and I think through this I'm going to be able to find it.
41:04This season on Project Runway, we're sending each of you to a different European country.
41:10What?
41:12Holy crap.
41:13We're in Paris.
41:14I am so excited.
41:15Oh.
41:16I think you're in trouble, crap.
41:17Sure.
41:18Your own teammates don't support you.
41:20You're really trying to micromanage.
41:22Watch it.
41:23Please don't let me down.
41:24I just want to cover myself.
41:25I'm sensing ego.
41:26I can feel the spiral begin.
41:28Daniel, what are you doing right now?
41:29Michelle, Liana, and Amanda are bitches.
41:32It's time to change things up a little bit.
41:34Damn you, Heidi!
41:39What's the matter?
41:40I've been second guessing myself the whole day.
41:43We have a very special guest judge for today.
41:45And we're awesome.
41:46John Legend.
41:47Miranda Lambert.
41:48And please welcome, Bette Midler.
41:51This was one of my favorite Project Runway shows.
41:53I'm very impressed.
41:54It's so charming.
41:55You guys should be really proud.
41:56I was just knocked out.
41:58The mushy bust looks trashy.
42:00I would die if someone asked me to wear that.
42:02She looks like she's been shipwrecked.
42:03Mayday, mayday.
42:04It's just bad.
42:05Sort of looks lumpy and dumpy.
42:07This is like, where is my whip?
42:09He makes too many excuses.
42:11Now we're done bitching.
42:13Say bye, Fred.
42:15Say bye, Fred.
42:16Bye!
