00:00This is Project Runway.
00:13It's awesome to see Project Runway here in Times Square.
00:15Way to start the season off with a bang.
00:17There are so many people and it's just amazing.
00:20Welcome to Season 10 of Project Runway.
00:25Oh my God, it's happening to that one.
00:27Anybody got a quick brush?
00:28It's crazy, there's people everywhere, it's frantic.
00:32Diners, I need you to put your kids away.
00:34That's it for last looks and I need you to come to me.
00:38Hi, everybody.
00:40We're in Times Square.
00:42This is our 10th anniversary of Project Runway
00:45and we're here with all the fans and we're very, very excited.
00:49We've had more seasons than I love Lucy.
00:51Pretty amazing.
00:53Ten years of fabulous fashion.
00:56We thank all of you who are helping make the careers of so many incredibly talented designers.
01:02And now we have a big moment.
01:0416 designers with shaking knees back there.
01:06It's true, they're very, very talented and they're very nervous.
01:10Would you guys like to meet them?
01:13Yay!
01:14Take a glass of champagne.
01:19Times Square.
01:20Ooh.
01:21Does it get any bigger than Times Square?
01:23I don't think it does.
01:24Nothing can even compare.
01:27This is like mega, mega, mega, mega.
01:29Designers, I just want to say how thrilled and honored we are to have you with us to share Season 10.
01:34So we should lift a glass.
01:35Here is to Season 10 of Project Runway.
01:38Yes.
01:39Here is to Season 10.
01:40Cheers, everybody.
01:41Cheers.
01:42Let's have a show.
01:43My name is Buffy Jashamal.
01:55I'm half Indian, half Australian, but I grew up in Dubai.
01:58The person who I'm trying to dress, the Buffy girl, is somebody who is always dressed up for the party, even if she's not going to one.
02:07It's colorful, bold and a little bit eccentric.
02:10Buffy is it?
02:11Yes.
02:12How do you say your name?
02:13Gunner.
02:14Gunner, okay.
02:15This is my second time coming to Project Runway.
02:18I did audition last year and made it to the top 20.
02:21Gunner, I'm sorry, you're out.
02:23I think what went wrong last time was that I didn't know who I was as a designer.
02:28And now coming back, it's a whole different light.
02:31You know, I have a point of view.
02:33I know who I am.
02:34And this year coming back is definitely a chance for redemption.
02:40Hey.
02:41What?
02:42Oh my god.
02:43This is me.
02:44We had a homework assignment before we came on the show this time.
02:46We were to make an outfit that describes our design aesthetic.
02:49Simple chic.
02:50I always like to picture Cruella de Vil in my outfit dragging a fur behind her.
02:57My name is Lanti Foster.
02:58I'm 38 and I'm from Northern California.
03:00I'm sorry, did I say 38?
03:01I did.
03:02Hey guys, how are you?
03:03I'm Buffy.
03:04Go on.
03:05We're matching.
03:06Hey.
03:07Hi, Fabio.
03:08Sanji.
03:09Hi.
03:10Where's yours?
03:11It's the black one over there.
03:12That's cute.
03:13It's my favorite.
03:14I designed for the edgy girl that is not scared to experiment with her style.
03:24Very avant-garde kind of feel.
03:26Where's yours?
03:27Mine is this one.
03:28Some people consider my outfit as very costume design, but it's not.
03:32It's a lot of like Japanese street fashion.
03:36I think clothing for everybody is a little bit different.
03:39Some people wear to have a, I'm a little more richer than what you think, or something
03:44like that, you know what I mean?
03:45But my thing about the clothing is I do make clothing because of love.
03:51I like making a lot of love.
03:53Yeah.
03:56When I went to college, I wanted to be a lawyer.
03:59And I took one political science class and I looked around and I was like, these are
04:04not my people.
04:05It took me 10 years to go back to school to finally pursue my masters in fashion design.
04:10So what's your style?
04:11Like what do you like to design?
04:12Um, I design a lot in black.
04:14Kind of more gothic inspired.
04:16I love black.
04:17I love using black.
04:19I love black and white films.
04:21I love black and white photography.
04:23It's just how I see, I see life.
04:25Hey guys.
04:26What's up here?
04:27Um, the laugh and the back.
04:32Hello.
04:33Hi everyone.
04:36Thrilled to have you all here.
04:37Well, I want to welcome all of you to Parsons, the new school for design.
04:41Adjoining this room is the brother sewing room, outfitted with brother sewing machines.
04:45And as you all know, fashion and technology are inextricable.
04:50So we are thrilled to be partnering once again with HP.
04:53And you each have an HP and Intel tablet on which to draw and execute your design ideas.
04:59And we have our Lord and Taylor accessory wall.
05:02Bravo, Lord and Taylor.
05:03Now, we asked you each to send us a look.
05:06And that is the look that is on your dress form.
05:08And for your first challenge, you will be creating a second look.
05:14A companion piece.
05:15And by that I mean, it should look as though it belongs with this piece.
05:18So you'll have one day for the challenge.
05:21You'll have a hundred dollar budget.
05:23We're going shopping at Mood.
05:24Now, you are our tenth anniversary season of designers.
05:30I'm thrilled to tell you this first challenge is going to be the biggest runway presentation
05:35in the history of Project Runway.
05:38You are going to be presenting your work to a huge audience.
05:43Probably thousands of people.
05:44Tons of press.
05:45In the center of the universe, Times Square.
05:48I've never showcased in a venue that big.
05:52All eyes will be on you.
05:54Now, I'm even more nervous.
05:56So how excited are you?
05:57Oh my God, this is crazy.
05:59That's awesome.
06:00All right, so I'm going to give you 30 minutes to sketch.
06:03And then we're going to Mood.
06:05I wouldn't be Tim Gunn without saying make it work.
06:07All right, thank you.
06:09It hasn't even hit me yet that I'm a part of Project Runway.
06:14I live at home with my two sisters and my parents in Massapequa.
06:18Yeah, I dropped out of college.
06:20But you know what?
06:21Talent is talent.
06:23I have a portfolio.
06:24I can sew like a .
06:26For the past few years, I've been making clothes for tomboys, basically.
06:31Being a lesbian designer sets me apart because it gives me a different point of view.
06:36I like menswear and I also like womenswear.
06:39My natural inclination is to mix the two.
06:42Design and concept comes naturally to me.
06:45Sewing, not so much.
06:47The first look I took about four days to create.
06:51Now I have one day, so I'm a little freaked out.
06:55All right, designers, are you set to go to Mood?
07:00Let's go.
07:01Designers, your time starts right now.
07:10Most people know that I'm a menswear designer, but I also have passion for womenswear.
07:14When I design for a woman, it's extremely feminine.
07:17I like to drape.
07:18I like to make dramatic colors.
07:20Designers, time is up.
07:23Thank you, Mood.
07:34I'm the grandmother of Project One Way.
07:36Where are you from?
07:37New York.
07:38I thought the next question would be how old are you?
07:40Fifty-eight.
07:41I'm proud of it.
07:42You look great.
07:43It's amazing.
07:44That means experience.
07:45I have a BA in art and MA in art education as well as an MFA in art.
07:51I'm a professor.
07:52I also teach fashion.
08:02Yeah, I've never been diagnosed with ADD, but I'm almost 100% positive that I have it.
08:06Now I'm putting myself out there as a fashion designer.
08:08I can't mess it up.
08:09I have to make it.
08:10Because I don't know if there's going to be another opportunity like this.
08:13Well, I grew up in Brazil with my grandmother, and she was the seamstress of the neighborhood.
08:18Her sewing machine was in my room, and I used to go to bed, listen to the machine, and to me that was like a lullaby.
08:23I don't shop.
08:24I'm a freegan.
08:25You're a what?
08:26Freegan.
08:27You know what that means?
08:28No, I don't.
08:29It means that I get my food out of the dumpsters.
08:31For real?
08:32Mm-hmm.
08:33It's like big supermarkets throw a bunch of food out every day.
08:35What?
08:36Mm-hmm.
08:37I'll take you out sometime.
08:38Let's all go dumpster diving.
08:41I used to be a professional ballroom dancer.
08:44You did?
08:45Okay.
08:46So where did you perform?
08:47Belarus, and I used to travel all over Europe.
08:49Oh, what a riot.
08:50And that's how I kind of got into fashion.
08:53I started sketching because seeing all these costumes and just glitter and feathers.
08:58Right, right.
08:59Now I'm more into real fashion.
09:01Jackets and coats and evening gowns.
09:05My design aesthetic is clean, architectural, but soft at the same time.
09:09I have passion for fashion.
09:11Coming up on Project Runway.
09:12I have no time for this.
09:16I am going to lose my .
09:18I really don't get it.
09:20I'm thoroughly confused.
09:22You all are intensely working, which is good.
09:38You will get started.
09:40Well, you're working away, Melissa.
09:41Good.
09:42I want to know as much as I can about who you are as a designer.
09:45I love to work with leather.
09:46I like to do a little bit more, I would say, avant-garde looks.
09:50So what are you creating?
09:51I wanted to show a little bit more skin in this look.
09:54I'm still using black and wrapping it around.
09:57I'm intrigued.
09:58I like kind of mixing the soft with the hard.
10:00This piece is mostly more so about the jacket.
10:02As positively as I respond to the jacket, I really don't get it with the dress underneath.
10:07Yeah.
10:08These are my colors, and then I did the pants with the cut-out holes.
10:12Mm-hmm.
10:13Just on one leg, because I thought that wasn't, like, as trashy, and I like things asymmetric.
10:17So I was trying to be sophisticated, because I was scared that the judges might, like, go down a route,
10:22so I know it was, like, a bit too, you know, much or something.
10:25It's not a bit not too much.
10:28Hey.
10:29Kuhn.
10:30Hi.
10:31Hi.
10:32Is this a dress?
10:33This is actually you can wear as a dress as well.
10:35So what are you creating now?
10:37It's like a, how do you say, a coat dress.
10:39Where's the dress part of it?
10:40This is it.
10:41All right.
10:42So my icon, my warrior was, yeah.
10:44Silly me.
10:45I'm not understanding.
10:46Yeah.
10:47But I'm trusting.
10:48You're confident about this.
10:49Yeah.
10:50Okay.
10:51Thank you so much.
10:52Thank you, Kuhn.
10:53I'm all knits, mainly.
10:54Okay.
10:55I kind of go with a constructed look, even though it is a knit.
10:58This is indicative of who you are as a designer.
11:00Yes, absolutely.
11:01My second look, and I think it's close to what I'm working with.
11:06And then I picked this light fabric.
11:09So what I want to do, it's basically a sweater dress.
11:12What would happen if you played with this over it?
11:18Just play with it.
11:19Okay.
11:20In fact, experiment with it.
11:21I'd love to hear about the look that you sent ahead.
11:23Yeah.
11:24This is the look that I made at home.
11:26The fact that you've kept it all in a single palette.
11:28Mm-hmm.
11:29And it's something that's dark and matte.
11:30Mm-hmm.
11:31I really believe it works.
11:32Yeah.
11:33So what are you doing for your new look?
11:35I took this little piece of it and zoomed in and made a full skirt out of it.
11:41I'm going to come clean with you.
11:43Mm-hmm.
11:44In the company of that piece and this piece, that the skirt is like a throw away.
11:49I'm questioning the design of the skirt.
11:52Right.
11:53I'm questioning the textile.
11:54Gunder, how are you doing?
11:55Hi, Tim.
11:56How are you?
11:57So tell me about the look that you sent ahead.
11:58I kind of like designing for older Southern women.
12:01Listen, there's a market.
12:02There is, and I'm surrounded by them.
12:04So I might as well sew for them.
12:06I decided to use an old antique dress from the 60s.
12:11And that's this.
12:12So I did my own adaptation of it.
12:14So I'm incorporating the snakeskin over to here.
12:17And I believe I'm going to use, like, nude underneath.
12:21You say I'm pretty sure I'm going to use that?
12:23This is the time to commit.
12:24Yeah, I kind of figured out as I go.
12:26I wasn't quite ready for you.
12:28No one ever is.
12:30My last collection was inspired by fencing uniforms.
12:35Oh.
12:36And, um.
12:37I get it.
12:38Yeah.
12:39So now I want to hear about this look.
12:41What was really worrying me is this color.
12:44Is it too much?
12:45What do you think?
12:50You need to commit and just execute.
12:53Okay.
12:54Just do it.
12:55I want to hear about this look.
12:56My aesthetic is really, like, romanticism mixed with the modern sophistication.
13:00I'm incredibly impressed with the execution of this.
13:03What's happening with the companion piece?
13:04This is a cocktail dress that's above the knee.
13:06I really wanted to balance it by putting a high neckline.
13:09Mm-hmm.
13:10How long would this take you?
13:11That thing that's my only concern is definitely the time.
13:13Understood.
13:14But I'm working through it.
13:15I thought for this challenge, especially since we're having young models and we're going
13:19to be in Times Square, that I wanted something that was really punchy and perhaps a little
13:23more youthful and a little bit shorter.
13:25Just as long as there's harmony.
13:27Okay.
13:29Raul, how are you?
13:31You look like you're in a state of indecision.
13:35Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with this fabric.
13:38What would you do with that to create a finished look?
13:42I was thinking about making a dress.
13:44You're going to need to instruct your model to wear something that's going to cover her
13:51up.
13:52Right.
13:53Christopher.
13:54I'm quite taken by this.
13:56In a good way?
13:57Oh, yeah.
13:58Very good way.
13:59Fantastic.
14:00So, what are you struggling with?
14:02The garment that I'm making right now.
14:04A strapless mini.
14:05This actually took longer than I thought.
14:09I think you have the potential here for having a serious wow moment.
14:17Hey, yeah.
14:18Hi.
14:19Hi.
14:20I'm Jordan.
14:21Raul, nice to meet you.
14:22I'm going to squeeze your boobage in here.
14:24If I don't pierce your nipple with this thing.
14:27My model is two inches smaller than the form, so I'm kind of screwed.
14:32All right, guys.
14:33Fifteen minutes.
14:34.
14:35Where's my zipper?
14:36Oh, my God.
14:37Oh, my God.
14:39No matter what I do, how fast I go, there's just not enough time to make this happen.
14:50Ugh.
14:51.
14:54Oh, it's cute.
14:57.
14:58I am getting quite nervous, because I am not finished with this garment.
15:01I am getting quite nervous because I am not finished with this garment.
15:12Oh my gosh, that whole seam just ripped out.
15:15Oh, fabulous.
15:20I have so much to do.
15:22I have to throw the second look together in hours.
15:26I am so nervous.
15:28I do not want to go home.
15:29Oh, God.
15:35Well, how is everyone?
15:38It's our first runway show, and it's going to be one to beat the band.
15:42Times Square, everybody.
15:45Your models will be in soon.
15:47You will have two hours to send them to the L'Oreal Paris Hair and Makeup Room.
15:52Use the Lord & Taylor accessory wall very thoughtfully.
15:55Work hard, everyone.
15:57Big day.
16:05Big smile.
16:06Good.
16:07Big smile.
16:12I create this on both of them.
16:14Very, you know, long and then pointy.
16:16And you want the ponytail super straight?
16:18Yes.
16:19Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
16:27What color smoke are on the eyes?
16:28I was like thinking like maybe, you know, between those two blues.
16:31Lots of mascara.
16:32Lots of mascara.
16:32Lots of mascara.
16:33Long eyelashes.
16:34My dress doesn't look right,
16:35so I'm literally making a shirt right now.
16:38Stop.
16:39Stop.
16:40I have 20 minutes left to go,
16:41and I notice as I'm trimming the dress
16:44that I have trimmed a hole through it.
16:47I think just being so frantic.
16:57Designers, time is up.
17:00So you and your models and I
17:03are going down to the runway.
17:04All right, everybody,
17:05let's head off to Times Square.
17:07Woo!
17:08Let's go!
17:23We have the runway.
17:25We have all the paparazzi.
17:27If I were dreaming,
17:29then this is what it would be like.
17:30Yeah.
17:51Woo!
17:52I'm all good.
17:52I'm so excited.
17:53I'm so excited!
17:53You're working.
17:54Designers, welcome to the runway.
17:57As you know, in fashion, one day you're in,
17:59and the next day, you're out.
18:01Your challenge this week was to design an outfit at home,
18:04at your leisure, and one outfit here at Parsons.
18:07Two looks, they were supposed to look like they belong
18:09on the runway together.
18:10Let's meet the judges.
18:14First, we have CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award winner,
18:17Michael Kors.
18:20Fashion director of Marie Claire magazine, Nina Garcia.
18:24And our guest judges for today, actress, Lauren Graham.
18:30And Project Runway's first guest judge ever 10 seasons ago,
18:33costume designer and stylist, Patricia Field.
18:37Welcome.
18:40Okay, New York City, let's start the show.
18:52I see my looks come down the runway.
18:54The pants look beautiful with the movement.
18:59Oh, my God.
19:01I am in complete awe.
19:08My models are walking great.
19:10I think that, for the time factor, they look good.
19:14But, of course, I wish I had more time to have made it better.
19:19I'm so happy with my first look.
19:30She looks beautiful in the dress, and it looks amazing.
19:33As the second look walks down the runway, I'm actually kind of looking at it,
19:36and it doesn't look as horrifying as I saw in the workroom, but it's still not great.
19:45I feel very excited about my work.
19:47I stay true to my aesthetic.
19:50It is well put together and presents really beautifully, and that's what I was really going for.
19:59When I see my cocktail dress, I love the feeling that you get from it.
20:11It's so pretty and so feminine.
20:13But I'm just really concerned about that zipper warping.
20:16My gown coming down the runway, it's moving, it's flowy.
20:22I would have never guessed it would look that good.
20:27When I see my first look come down the runway, all the noise, everything,
20:33it all gets quiet, and I just focus on her.
20:36I did reach out and try to do something new with this ensemble,
20:41but at the same time, it's very me, so I hope that it's enough.
20:46I'm really pleased with how they came out.
20:53I love how they look.
20:55They're very out there.
20:56It's probably nothing like they're used to.
20:59I really hope they don't find my looks atrocious.
21:07Everything looks like it's working great.
21:09I love the colors together.
21:10My second look wasn't as much of a statement piece as the first one,
21:14so I was rather concerned that I could be in the bottom three.
21:24My sequined gown looks great, and I think it's a great piece.
21:28It shows me really well as a designer.
21:30My girls look beautiful.
21:37It looks good.
21:38I'm very happy.
21:39People are screaming just for my outfit.
21:44Nobody else but my outfit.
21:46Thank you, people.
21:48I have absolutely no regrets.
21:54I am 100% happy with my looks.
21:57Last season, I may have been one of the first ones to fall,
22:00but this time, I'm going to be one of the last ones standing.
22:02She is just totally killing it and working the runway,
22:06and I'm like, oh, this looks good.
22:08I'm jumping up and down even though I'm sitting there
22:10looking all calm and collective.
22:12I am just thinking, you got this.
22:14You got this one.
22:16I'm looking at that jacket, and I'm saying, wow.
22:32Everything that I wanted to accomplish,
22:35I feel like I accomplished it.
22:36I feel like the whole look comes together
22:38and just complements the first look so well.
22:49Seeing my first look come down the runway
22:52is just unbelievable.
22:54I am just blown away because it's exactly
22:56how I wanted to see her.
22:58I'm very happy with my looks.
23:08I love my first look.
23:12She looks amazing.
23:13Everything looks great.
23:14When my second look comes on the runway,
23:16I was second guessing myself still.
23:19Then I see my model just rocking this dress,
23:23and everything makes sense.
23:31I am absolutely 100% behind my garment.
23:35It's unusual.
23:36It's unconventional, but it's wearable,
23:39and it's functional, and it has me in it.
23:43The black dress has every element of my design,
23:46and she looks amazing, and she feels my garment
23:49the way that I need it to be filled,
23:51and I feel so proud of that.
23:56That was it, everybody.
23:57Thank you very much for having us here.

25:26Beatrice.
25:28Melissa, please step forward.
25:32If I have not called your name, congratulations.
25:35Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
25:39You can leave the runway.
25:40One of you will be named the winner,
25:45and one of you will be out.
25:47The six of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
26:04One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
26:10Okay, Kuan, tell us about your looks.
26:13This first look represents more like the one that I started when I was 16.
26:19This represents more my recent work that I did.
26:23I mean, I definitely have a lot of question marks.
26:25Yes.
26:26Yes.
26:27It's odd. It's strange.
26:28At the same time, it is intriguing in a way.
26:32So there's the next question mark in my head.
26:34Do I want to see more?
26:35I want to show you more stuff.
26:37Well, obviously, you know, you have a look.
26:41And it's certainly not something that will go unnoticed.
26:46My reaction, though, is even if cartoon is your thing, you don't want it to be a joke.
26:52You know, when I look at the romper, I mean, she's borderline Teletubby.
26:57But realistically, you know, do you know how to sew?
27:01Yes.
27:02Yes, you absolutely know how to sew.
27:04You know, you want to have your own point of view.
27:06You want it to be different.
27:07But it can still look expensive, polished.
27:11It's just I want to be sure that we're not going to see a joke.
27:15Thank you so much.
27:17My concern is that you're not being outrageous just for the sake of being outrageous.
27:24I think that choice of fabric might have been a little dangerous because while it's got a great visual,
27:30it doesn't tailor up very easily because it has a, you know, that stiffness to it.
27:37I mean, I think he has a very strong point of view, actually.
27:41Thank you so much.
27:42Thank you, Kuan.
27:43Thank you so much.
27:44Melissa, tell us about your looks.
27:46The dress was inspired by the Bauhaus art movement as well as the band.
27:50So I wanted to continue with the geometric angles.
27:53The minute they turn the corner, I know your vibe, you know?
27:59And today that was an important part of this.
28:02I really like this.
28:04I happen to prefer your second look, but the girls connect.
28:08I liked it very much.
28:10It's definitely current.
28:12It's something that a lot of girls would want to wear.
28:15They're both sexy girls.
28:17I mean, that is nice.
28:18I would want to wear that, both of these looks.
28:21It fits her beautifully.
28:23And she walked out and I was like, ooh, you know, and the three of you together tell a story of coolness.
28:30And that's hard to do with black because we've all seen a lot of blacks, but they look great.
28:37Beatrice, tell us about your looks.
28:39I like mixing knit.
28:40And I started out, I just like to have something that's easy to throw on, easy to wear, and making a knit that looks special.
28:48And then I wanted to give her something to reveal and cover her with, so I made kind of like a cape.
28:55So this is a sweater type knit, and then I used this fabric to go with it.
29:03I have to tell you, I was not very attracted to both of the looks.
29:06One, it's kind of like this t-shirt meets sack dress, and here the same.
29:11I'm not loving these two fabrics together.
29:14I was just not attracted to either of the pieces.
29:18I get it that you like knits.
29:20Then you have this other look that, it's interesting, it's a nice skirt.
29:25You have a simple dress that actually looks much better if you take the cape off.
29:30Because at least you can appreciate that you have spent some time in its simplicity.
29:36I mean, the shape in itself is quite beautiful.
29:40Right.
29:41Everyone loves comfort, everyone loves easiness, but that's not enough.
29:46It doesn't really tell me who you are as a designer, and I don't really know who your girl is.
29:54Right.
29:55And that really is what it's all about today.
29:57This dress is so pretty, it just gives me ideas of what else I wish you did.
30:01Like, I wish you'd done, be the knit jersey person, you know, and do it in a different length.
30:08The comfort part, I get it.
30:11The thing is, though, it's not catching my eye in any special way.
30:16Thank you, Beatrice.
30:18Christopher, we're going to talk to you next. Tell us about your looks.
30:22Well, my design aesthetic is chic, sophisticated, and I picked this fabric here.
30:29And I knew I wanted to use this technique, sewing lines parallel to each other, as you see here.
30:35I've really tried hard to make material that you've never seen before.
30:39I love this gown.
30:41I think it's exquisite.
30:43I mean, this is a gown that can be on a red carpet with a major star.
30:48I mean, for all the people at home, you have to show this again.
30:51Like, when you lift this fabric up, how it peekaboo's.
30:54I mean, it is so awesome, the way you did that.
30:58This is also very nice.
31:00To tell you the truth, when you guys do these black dresses, it doesn't really translate that well.
31:06It's so hard to see, and there is so much work, but I love them both.
31:10Thank you very much.
31:11I think you did a fantastic job.
31:13The fabric manipulation is really, really, really well done.
31:18And the toughest thing is to do something that is, in fact, very labor-intensive, but make it look effortless.
31:24But what did not work for me, quite honestly, is the way these girls are styled.
31:29Really?
31:30I think they are not modern.
31:33I think they're a little wedding party in the styling.
31:37Yeah.
31:38Initially, I saw a lot of problems with this little black dress.
31:42But then came this beauty, and it was striking, because it looks so light.
31:50And it looks so fragile.
31:53And you took a fabric that is okay.
31:56It's tacky, and I hate it.
31:58And you made it look remarkable.
32:01You know, it completely changed my perspective on you immediately when I saw this.
32:06There was that delicate quality of the 30s, and it really shows specialness.
32:16Christopher, thank you.
32:18Lanti, tell us about your looks.
32:20For the at-home challenge, I had a 60s vintage dress.
32:24This is real snakeskin, and a little bolero jacket.
32:28I took the tool idea and did the snake in the front.
32:31I just don't think it's flattering to have this piece of fabric right here in the front.
32:35It looks stuck on.
32:36Is that something that you do in all of your clothes?
32:39No, not at all.
32:40These pieces in the front?
32:41I don't know what you're trying to say other than vintage-y looking textiles.
32:46It looks like it's made out of kind of muddy mosquito netting.
32:51It's a little sad.
32:53I don't know what the story is other than a textile story, and I don't think the textiles are so great.
33:00Okay.
33:01I don't think this is a disaster.
33:03I think you were just trying too hard.
33:05And I thought it was pretty.
33:07And then I saw the second one, and I was like, oh my god.
33:12It is horrifying.
33:14It's kind of like, is this the same designer?
33:18You reworked vintage clothes.
33:21It's somewhere in between stylist and designer.
33:25It's one step below design.
33:28Thank you, Lanti.
33:30Venn, tell us about your looks.
33:33For my first look, I really worked on a creative draping for the top, and I wanted the suit to be designed but still clean.
33:41For the second look, I really just wanted to mimic an idea of the top, but something that was easy and wearable.
33:49Venn, what I really liked about your two designs was the way they worked with each other.
33:54You know, I can totally see the relation.
33:56You tailored fabric that is really tough to tailor.
34:01Took a long time.
34:02But you managed to take this crepe fabric with those pleats.
34:08You really did think about her body.
34:10These had a really nice, elegant flow to them.
34:13The flower construction on the bustier is fantastic.
34:18When I first saw this, my first instinct was to think, wow, he is technically very good.
34:28Because this bustier looks phenomenal.
34:31It looks expensive, and it looks very well done.
34:35It's beautiful.
34:36I love a white suit, and it was just so fresh and happy when it came out.
34:39I just love the choice of that pink, so it was really lovely.
34:43Thank you very much.
34:45Thank you, Venn.
34:46Models, you can leave the runway.
34:50Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
34:52I'm going to have a little chat, and then I'm going to call you back.
34:55You can leave the runway.
34:56Out of the three designers that had the highest scores, there were two that we really, really loved.
35:17Yeah, that was really clear.
35:19We also had high scores for Melissa.
35:21We liked it, but it wasn't as special as Venn's or Christopher's, right?
35:26Melissa's clothes, a young woman in today's world, I mean, those are the clothes that she's going to grab for.
35:33Yeah.
35:34Because they've got edge.
35:35The hair and makeup was great.
35:38It looked dramatic.
35:39It looked modern.
35:40It looked now.
35:41The customer is going to go for it.
35:43It's easy to understand.
35:44You know it.
35:45You know the girl.
35:46I would want a lot of those pieces.
35:48I thought it was very nice.
35:49Christopher, the gown, to do that, not only to create the textile, to keep it as light.
35:54When you saw that the strips were not all the same size, I mean, that was all gray dated out.
36:00And something so fragile about that dress, so light.
36:05He took an old lady fabric and he made it young.
36:08That's the twist.
36:10I just wish the black dress had been some other color, like any other color, so you could have seen what he did with it.
36:17What was in there.
36:18Yeah, yeah.
36:19When I saw that black dress, I was like, then I see the second dress, I was like, wow.
36:24We would all wear that, right?
36:26I mean, that was special.
36:27Not me.
36:28Why not?
36:29Well, maybe.
36:30Maybe.
36:31No, I think he really did a brilliant job there.
36:35We also loved Venn.
36:37This bustier was beautiful.
36:39I mean, it did look like a rose.
36:41The sculpting was fabulous.
36:43I mean, he actually had too many ideas today.
36:47I think in the long run, Venn could step out because he's got that craft.
36:54Venn, everything he did was made perfectly, fit beautifully.
37:00And I think looked expensive.
37:04Let's talk about the designers that we didn't like so much today.
37:08Kuan, he's a little goofy, right?
37:10But I just want to make sure, though, that it's got charm and humor, but it's not a joke.
37:17It's almost more cause for concern the second look.
37:20His kooky look has so much going on.
37:23It was the second one that...
37:24When he tries for restraint, what's going to happen?
37:26Yeah, it was sort of not to do anything.
37:28Maybe it'll just go and zoom.
37:29The suflay will fall.
37:30All right, let's talk about Beatrice.
37:33The knits.
37:34She had no story to tell.
37:35Like, she was really trying really hard to sell the clothes to us.
37:39She thought that that ugly Aztec cape was going to be, like, a dramatic moment.
37:45I mean, if anything, the only possible good thing she had was the gray dress.
37:52Let's talk about Lanty.
37:53You know what I loved what you said, Patricia?
37:56You said Lanty is more of a stylist than a designer.
38:01I was like, you know what?
38:02I feel like you're right.
38:03I mean, I looked at Lanty and I think to myself, so she's kind of reworking vintage clothes, then has no idea about proportion.
38:10Bad vintage clothes.
38:11And badly done at that.
38:13Well, when she tried to design it, it was a disaster.
38:17She took a granny dress from the 70s.
38:20You know, that's what that was.
38:22And then she recreated for the new millennium more dumpy.
38:25That's what happened.
38:26The interest, I felt like, was saying she didn't feel she represented herself.
38:31And she should have done better, I guess.
38:34But Lanty was a little more like, yes, this is what I do.
38:37And I'm proud of it.
38:38I believe in Python bibs.
38:39Yes.
38:40At least she is a fighter.
38:41Or delusional.
38:43So we've made our decision.
38:47Okay, let's bring them back out.
38:52The six of you represent the best and the worst.
38:57One of you will be the winner of this challenge.
39:01And one of you will be out.
39:04Christopher?
39:05Yes.
39:06Congratulations.
39:07You are the winner of the first challenge.
39:08Thank you so much.
39:09Congratulations.
39:10You can leave the runway.
39:11I won the first challenge in Times Square in front of the world.
39:25It was so exciting.
39:26I won.
39:27You won.
39:29Oh yeah.
39:30Oh yeah.
39:31How's it going?
39:32Yeah.
39:33Ben, we also really loved your looks.
39:38You're in.
39:39You can leave the runway.
39:41Melissa, good job.
39:42You're in.
39:43You can leave the runway.
39:45Melissa, good job.
39:47You're in.
39:48You can leave the runway.
39:51Kwan, you're in, you can leave the runway.
40:00Lanty, Beatrice, one of you will be out.
40:18Lanty, you're in, you can leave the runway.
40:26Beatrice, I'm sorry, that means you're out.
40:31Thank you for the opportunity.
40:35Auf Wiedersehen.
40:38All the best to you.
40:40No one ever wants to be the first one to let go, and it is a bummer, but at the same time,
40:46I was really honored to be here.
40:49Baby girl.
40:50I felt good.
40:51No, I'm out.
40:52No!
40:53It's okay.
40:54Don't.
40:55Oh!
40:57Oh, geez.
40:59It's our first challenge.
41:01It's Project Runway musical chairs, as we all know, and a talented designer has to go.
41:07And we're just sick that it's you, Beatrice.
41:10I know.
41:11So, you made it here.
41:13Congratulations.
41:15That's an incredible achievement.
41:18And now, I have to send you to the workroom to clean up your space.
41:20I know.
41:21Yeah, I'll do it.
41:22Okay.
41:23All right.
41:24Okay.
41:25I'll give you a hug.
41:27You're very talented, and we're going to hear a lot more from you.
41:29Okay.
41:30Even though I'm, like, the first to go, I really enjoyed my time here, and I'm proud
41:37that I was here and that I got selected.
41:43This season on Project Runway.
41:45The Raquettes will serve as your inspiration for this challenge.
41:49Get in your cars.
41:50This is your unconventional challenge.
41:53Oh, my God, it really hurts.
41:58It's cut throat.
41:59This is a glue out of it moment.
42:01I'm calm.
42:02Don't tell me to calm down.
42:03I think we're waiting for Elena to go crazy.
42:06Dude, where is she?
42:07I heard her get up in the middle of the night.
42:09Just got real.
42:11Can't do this now.
42:12Everything is falling apart.
42:14I'm at a loss for why someone really wants to leave.
42:17Everyone seems to be dropping like flies.
42:19Fashion is not for sissies.
42:21What is going on?
42:22You don't care what anybody else wants to do.
42:24Don't talk to me like that.
42:26I...
42:27Worst thing you can do to your team.
42:30It's a disco bridesmaid ice skating old lady.
42:34Atrocious.
42:35What happened?
42:36I can't even believe that I'm standing here right now.
42:39You had such an opportunity, and you threw it away.
