00:0092.5 XTU, Philly's Country Station, it's McColl with Johnny Roll!
00:05I'm so excited, this whole weekend I was like, I can't wait to see Johnny Roll.
00:10And he's doing an interview and I was like, yes, yes, yes.
00:13And I was excited to see you but I was like, is Bunny here?
00:15And you said she took some days off.
00:17I know, the poor thing.
00:18She works hard too.
00:19For whatever reason, the calendar she has only has the back row baptism tour dates.
00:25Okay.
00:26So she looked at the stretch because this is like a separate thing.
00:29And she was like, you're awesome.
00:31I was like, no, I'm not.
00:32We're going to do a big festival.
00:33She was like, I can't.
00:34She was so mad.
00:35Yeah.
00:36I love her.
00:37Yeah.
00:38So you guys, such a cool vibe couple.
00:40I'm obsessed.
00:41She's my best friend, man.
00:42So cute.
00:43Alright, so you literally are taking over the music industry right now.
00:48Oh, stop.
00:49I know you probably hear this a lot, but we need to talk about this.
00:52You are the first artist ever to have a top 10 on country and rock radio at the same time.
00:57High five.
00:58Yes.
00:59What is that like?
01:00Man, it is.
01:01I say it on stage every night and it's just, when I say it still, it's, you know, who would
01:06ever thought?
01:07That's the kind of history you don't even think about being feasible to make.
01:12So it's just unreal.
01:13And I think it's a testament of the song.
01:15Yeah.
01:16The song is just, man.
01:17But I think it's a testament of you.
01:18I mean, you are so, and I was talking to Lexi a little off camera, but she's your record
01:22rep, a friend of mine.
01:23And I was saying, like, you're so organic and that's what people want so much now.
01:27And your, your songs, like, I remember the first time I heard Need a Favor, I was like,
01:30this is a first listen hit.
01:32It's a smash.
01:33And I think the combination just who you are and your music, it just, it connects with
01:37people so much.
01:38Well, speaking of big smashes, thank y'all.
01:40Y'all been playing the absolute.
01:41You're welcome.
01:42You're welcome.
01:43You're welcome.
01:44You're welcome.
01:45We were definitely doing this interview.
01:48I'm like, I want to go talk to these people.
01:51I'm like, it just, there's so much soul to it too.
01:56And I know that you, so I saw you at CRS, you performed with the New Faces in Nashville
02:01back in March, and you have so much soul.
02:03Have you always been like that?
02:04Or do you feel that that's been through experience and life and everything that you've
02:09been through?
02:10I think it's experience and life, and I think a lot of it too comes with just, um,
02:15my spirit comes through the music, you know?
02:17Yeah, yeah.
02:18And it's like, I don't, I didn't, I'm still learning how to sing.
02:20Yeah.
02:21So for me, a lot of that soul just comes from squeezing my buttons every time I'm going for
02:25it.
02:26You know what I mean?
02:27Yeah.
02:28Going out there and sounding like that.
02:31But it really does, it's like, it's like, I feel like people go to your show and
02:35then you're like taking them to church a little bit.
02:37Yeah.
02:38I always wanted that feeling though.
02:39My wife told me, like, in 2016 or 15, we were walking out of the show, and she was
02:45like, that felt like church.
02:46And initially the Southern man was like, well, hold on, man, that gets a little, don't
02:51say that.
02:52And then she looked at me and she said, this will be the closest thing to church some
02:56of these people ever mentioned.
02:57Yeah, yeah.
02:58And I thought about that and I was like, man, we actually probably need to lean into that.
03:03Yeah.
03:04But this is the one chance for people to experience what that old back road.
03:08So, you know, it went to chapel, the church I named my album at.
03:11Yeah.
03:12You want to know what a Sunday at Winsor Chapel felt like?
03:14This is it.
03:15I felt like any time you had a good Sunday, it involved dancing, singing, crying, and food.
03:22And maybe football.
03:23Yeah, yeah, football.
03:24Especially downstairs.
03:25Wait, so speaking of football really quick, because obviously, so we're at the Jersey Shore,
03:28but it's an extension of Philly.
03:29So we're a Philly radio station.
03:31It's like everybody goes to the Jersey Shore in the summer.
03:33So it's Eagles football land.
03:35Right.
03:36But like the Titans, like most people from the South are SEC fans.
03:39Oh, yeah.
03:40So are you a Titans fan?
03:41I'm a Titans fan.
03:42You are a Titans fan.
03:43And then do you follow college football?
03:44Oh, absolutely.
03:45So who's your team?
03:46Yeah, so we will be cheering on the volunteer for Tennessee.
03:48Oh, you are, okay.
03:49Now I do cheer for Auburn when they're not playing Tennessee.
03:52Okay.
03:53I had a family member to go to Auburn.
03:54Oh, cool.
03:55My brother and sister have been Auburn fans.
03:56All right.
03:57So, and I mean the Titans, I feel like they're like a cool vibe team.
04:00They're a newer, one of the newer teams.
04:02Oh, dude, we were on fire until y'all took our best wide receiver.
04:06We lost AJ Brown, took y'all straight to a Super Bowl.
04:09You were 12?
04:10They're licking my wound.
04:11It's been horrible.
04:12It's a sore subject.
04:13Why'd you have to bring this up?
04:15I love it though.
04:16I love AJ.
04:17I think AJ's great.
04:18He was good for Nashville.
04:19And I think he's great for Philadelphia.
04:21You are always welcome to be an Eagles fan.
04:23I'm an AJ Brown fan for sure.
04:25There you go.
04:26Yes.
04:27Don't get me in trouble, but I would cheer it for you.
04:29We need an Eagles.
04:30Send Jelly Roll a Kelly Green, AJ Brown jersey.
04:33Yeah, come on.
04:34That is what you need right now.
04:36Send me an AJ Brown jersey.
04:37Just a little more salt in that wound.
04:39Listen, salt's good for you.
04:42It helps you to enjoy it.
04:44Yes, I know.
04:45Listen, congratulations.
04:46You're also on Pop Radio and Hot AC right now.
04:48Yes.
04:49So four formats.
04:50You're just, it's just awesome.
04:52I love you.
04:53I think you're so talented and I'm so honored to play your songs.
04:56Thank you for interviewing and stopping by.
04:59Thanks for taking the time.
05:00And I can't wait to do a Philly proper show.
05:02Yes, that's right, because you technically, this is not Philly proper.
05:05Right.
05:06Even last time I believe it was Camden, right?
05:08Yeah.
05:09That's technically, actually, one of my biggest pet peeves is when people go,
05:12what's up, Camden?
05:13I'm like, you're technically in Philly.
05:15Yeah, yeah, for sure.
05:16But it is weird, because even here, you'll have Philly people, Jersey people,
05:19Delaware super close.
05:21It's confusing for people from the Midwest or the South, because you're like,
05:24why are all these states crisscrossing each other?
05:27It's like a geography lesson.
05:28Admittedly, I'm geographically challenged when I get to the East Coast.
05:31It was this morning that I was like, I think we're right about Philly.
05:35I also kept saying I was playing Jersey City all week, and I was wrong.
05:40Right.
05:41Apparently, this is Atlantic City, and there is a Jersey City.
05:44That's technically New York City.
05:46Yeah.
05:47So that's what's even weirder.
05:48Yeah.
05:49Is that you have, like, the South Jersey towns that are connected to Philly,
05:51and then the North Jersey towns that are connected to New York City.
05:53So it's very confusing.
05:55God, it's awesome.
05:56I know.
05:57But you're awesome.
05:58There's culture everywhere.
05:59It is.
06:00What?
06:01I don't know y'all can simply get asked.
06:02No.
06:03They're bringing me a cheesesteak.
06:04Yes.
06:05Where should it be for me?
06:06All right.
06:07You say Angelo's?
06:08Angelo's is bringing me.
06:09Oh.
06:10Oh, you're getting Angelo's?
06:11It's an Angelo's.
06:12Yes.
06:13Oh, my God.
06:14So Angelo's, like, Angelo's is such a big deal.
06:16I can't, this is how you know you're a big deal.
06:18Angelo's, you can't even go inside.
06:19You have to call on the phone.
06:20Really?
06:21There's no online ordering.
06:22Oh, that's awesome.
06:23It has such a cult following.
06:24It's such a big deal in Philly.
06:26Wait, you have Angelo's black car?
06:28They said they were coming to see you.
06:30Yeah.
06:31Oh, my God.
06:32This is real.
06:33This is a big deal.
06:34So I met them at the Shinedown show.
06:35Okay.
06:36Last year.
06:37Yeah.
06:38And everybody kept telling me that.
06:39They were like, yo, this is a big deal.
06:40Yes.
06:41And they brought us all these things.
06:42And they were like, I agree.
06:43Yes.
06:44And this morning they were like, yo, the people are bringing the Philly cheesesteaks.
06:45I was like, the same people?
06:46They were like, yes.
06:47What are you doing?
06:48This is the caliber that Gelly Roll was at, that Angelo's is delivering cheesesteaks.
06:52So.
06:53Who cares about a number one song on all the formats?
06:56That's awesome.
06:57Angelo's is delivering you a cheesesteak.
06:58What a fat ass I am.
07:00I'm celebrating my number one weekend.
07:01I'm on Philly radio.
07:02Like, Angelo's is bringing this.
07:07Gelly Roll, you're amazing.
07:08Gelly Roll, everybody.
07:09Thank you so much.
07:10Thank y'all so much.
07:11So great.
