Jon Gruden | Gruden's QB Class
Transcript
00:00Seth Hennigan is the finisher. He started his state at Memphis. I like that. 50 starts.
00:06This is a very good offense that can move the ball a lot of different ways.
00:11He's a polished quarterback. You just see a lot of hidden plays that he makes that are hard to describe,
00:18but this cat knows how to get it done in the pocket. This is very important to him.
00:23This is what he loves to do. I got a feeling this is really going to impress him.
00:28What sets me apart is my intellect and my decision-making process.
00:32I love football because it's the ultimate team sport, ultimate team game.
00:37You've got to have that continuity with your brothers.
00:39You've got to execute every play, whether that's a good play or a bad play.
00:42You've got to play the next play every single time.
00:53You know me. You know I love football statistics.
00:57And let me tell you an impressive stat.
00:59The Chevy Silverado is the undisputed champion.
01:02Capability, versatility, and strength.
01:06That's a truck with MVP stats.
01:08Explore Chevy Silverado at Chevy.com.
01:12QB Class is presented by Chevy Silverado.
01:15I think this meeting you and I are going to have is a little bit different than the ones we've had with other players because of your experience in your system.
01:26A lot of guys are in their first year of a new system. You're in your fourth year.
01:29Are those measurables accurate? 6'3", 215? What were you at the combine?
01:346'3", 215.
01:36And where the heck is Denton, Texas?
01:39A little north of Dallas, about an hour north.
01:41And Ryan High School is where it all started, right?
01:43Yes, sir.
01:44Tell me a little bit about your playing days at Denton.
01:47We went to the state championship twice, my junior and senior year.
01:50Won the state championship my senior year.
01:52And the next day, I was on campus at Memphis.
01:55Your brother, Ian, is the starting quarterback at Ryan.
01:59He gets hurt.
02:00You got to come in and you play.
02:01Now, Ian comes back.
02:03He's ready to go.
02:04He said, Dad, I'm healthy.
02:05I'm ready to play again.
02:06Your dad sticks with you.
02:08He keeps Ian on the bench.
02:10Was your mom pissed or what?
02:11Tell me about that.
02:12Yeah, just pretty interesting scenario.
02:14Let me hear the conversation at the dinner table.
02:17I want to hear what Dave said.
02:18Did he say, hey, Seth's ripping it.
02:20We're staying with him?
02:21Pretty much.
02:22I don't know what he told my brother, but he pulled me out of class.
02:24And he was like, hey, Seth, we're going to stick with you.
02:27You're our guy going forward.
02:29He was like a little emotional because that's got to be hard on him,
02:32having to make that decision.
02:33Just having a dad as a coach.
02:36Maybe reflect on how that has helped you through this whole process
02:41and where you are today.
02:42Yeah, I'd say just as far as X's and O's,
02:44he definitely was the foundation in that regard in my football intellect.
02:49He set that up at a young age and taught me how to throw.
02:53Never really had a quarterback coach until this pre-draft process.
02:56So he's kind of taught me a lot as far as my football career.
03:01I know him as Dave Hennigan, number nine.
03:04I went down to Fountain Valley, California, Southern California.
03:07I signed your dad to come up to play to UOP.
03:10When I left UOP, they dropped football.
03:12That's how important I am.
03:13Why'd you go to Memphis?
03:15Yeah, I was pretty under-recruited out of high school.
03:18Only had nine offers, mainly Ivy League schools.
03:21High GPA guy.
03:22Definitely kind of used that to be able to get my first offers.
03:26Had Harvard, Penn, schools like that.
03:29And only two schools really recruited me, Memphis and Nevada.
03:33So Memphis just came off of the Cotton Bowl.
03:36Offense kind of fit my play style.
03:38So you're kind of off the radar a little bit even in this process.
03:41Not a lot of my analysts are chiming for Hennigan in the first or second round.
03:46Yeah.
03:47Not a lot of the big schools, Ohio State, Texas, were after you coming out of high school.
03:53Yeah.
03:54What is it that people are missing on you?
03:56I was just a late bloomer coming out of high school.
03:58My senior year of high school, I dominated in 5A, Texas high school football, which is
04:03one of the biggest classifications in high school.
04:06And then got to Memphis, started as a true freshman.
04:10You know, I go to some of these colleges and some of these all-stars, they don't even
04:13suit up for spring practice.
04:15They're driving their fucking Lamborghini around, getting it washed.
04:18You know, they're jewelry shopping.
04:20But I heard you went to every one of these practices.
04:22For sure.
04:23I heard you take all these reps for four years in the summer, in the spring.
04:28And you're running practices last summer with your receivers pretty much by yourself, aren't
04:33you?
04:34Yes, sir.
04:35And that's impressive, man.
04:36And I just want you to, you know, reflect on some of the relationships that you're able
04:40to make over four years, starting with your teammates, your equipment manager, your trainer.
04:46What would all those people say to me if I got them in here?
04:50Because I'm gonna.
04:51Tell me about this Seth Hennigan.
04:53What would they tell me?
04:54They'd say, I'm a good man.
04:56I'm honest about what I do.
04:58And I create great relationships with everyone in the building.
05:01Like you said, if it's an EQ manager, if it's a custodian, if it's someone serving our
05:06food, whoever it may be, I'm saying hello to them, getting to know them on a personal
05:10level.
05:11Because that's where leadership grows is from a personal relationship, in my opinion.
05:15I think these things, these are going to be strengths of yours.
05:18I think all the reps, all the relationships that you have are going to help you in some
05:24of the dark times.
05:25Yes, sir.
05:26I think you got a lot of good stuff here in the future.
05:29But look at these statistics.
05:31I mean, I'm not going to kiss your ass all day, but a hundred and four TD passes, 14,000
05:38yards, 15,000 yards of total offense.
05:41There's not many quarterbacks in the history of football that have thrown for 15,000 yards
05:46and a hundred touchdowns.
05:47That's a lot of production.
05:49You're one of very few guys that stayed four years at your college.
05:54Everybody's transferring.
05:56I got whiplash.
05:57Who the hell's playing quarterback at some of these schools?
06:01Why in the hell did you not transfer like all the others?
06:05Relationships.
06:06Don't bullshit me.
06:07I mean, come on.
06:08Relationships.
06:09That's what it's all about.
06:10At the end of the day, continuity.
06:11Same offensive coordinator, same head coach who recruited me out of high school, and three
06:16receivers coming back, starting tight ends coming back, three offensive linemen coming
06:20back.
06:21So that's like eight starters coming back, same offensive coordinator.
06:25Figured we need to ride this out, try and win a conference championship.
06:28That's awesome.
06:29You know, when you go to the NFL, let's just say I was coaching you.
06:33You're not going to be able to enter the transfer portal after one year.
06:36You're going to have to work your ass off and be loyal.
06:39And I got a feeling that's how your dad raised you.
06:42Just work your ass off and be loyal to who you are and where you are.
06:46And that's a great accomplishment sticking it out.
06:50You must be proud of sticking it out for four years.
06:53Yeah.
06:54I feel like it'll help me in the long term as well.
06:56Let's start with freshman year.
06:57You remember this Arkansas State game?
06:59Yes, sir.
07:0055 to 50.
07:01I mean.
07:02Shootout.
07:03The first thing I saw is how skinny you are.
07:05How much you weigh here?
07:06185.
07:07185 and you're 215 now.
07:09Yes, sir.
07:10So you've gained 30 pounds of what?
07:13Pure muscle.
07:14Pure muscle.
07:15You look like a chiseled freaking muscle freak.
07:17I mean, Memphis, when I think college football, I don't start thinking Memphis right out of the gate.
07:22Yes, sir.
07:23But when you beat Mississippi State with a true freshman quarterback, there's a lot of momentum that you guys got started, isn't there?
07:29Yes, sir.
07:30And I know you guys are tired of hearing about the level of competition, how you guys don't play a tough enough schedule and Hannigan hasn't beaten the big schools.
07:39But Mississippi State with Mike Leach, head coach, that was a pretty good win.
07:43And you were starting to earn a lot of respect, weren't you?
07:46Yes, sir.
07:47Sure.
07:48But you got three straight bowl victories.
07:49I just want to get into that a little bit.
07:51And I watched those three games.
07:53A lot of guys don't even play in bowl games anymore.
07:56They don't go to spring practice.
07:58They don't go to the senior bowl.
07:59They don't even play.
08:00You go out there and you kick the shit out of people.
08:03I mean, nine touchdowns, no picks, three wins.
08:06What's the game preparation like at Memphis when you get ready for one of these bowl games?
08:11Yeah, I mean, it's more extensive since we have three weeks, four weeks.
08:15Everyone's getting back healthy, and I always play better ball at the end of the year whenever it's the most important.
08:21Utah State, what's this?
08:22Call it.
08:23Give me the formation and the play.
08:24We got strong left, snag check.
08:26What's that slot combination called?
08:28That's just Missouri right there.
08:30Hitching a fade.
08:32You like that?
08:33Man free.
08:34Took my shot to one of our best receivers that year.
08:37You know how to play the position, don't you?
08:38Yes, sir.
08:39A little savvy.
08:40A lot of guys say, that guy's a player.
08:42I used to say that on Monday Night Football.
08:44He's a player.
08:45Fans would go, oh, what the hell is that supposed to mean?
08:48You just know how to make hidden plays that nobody really understands except the quarterbacks, don't you?
08:53Yes, sir.
08:54Tell me about Iowa State.
08:55I mean, this was a shred job.
08:57Yeah.
08:58What do you recollect about this game?
08:59That was one of my best games that I've ever played, I think.
09:02What the hell was this play?
09:03Can you draw it up and tell me what you were doing against Iowa State on the third play of the game?
09:07Remember?
09:08Yeah.
09:09You want me to draw it up on the whiteboard?
09:10Yeah.
09:11Can you explain it to me?
09:12Because I love when you do extensive preparation and then you get to go out there and present it to the world, man.
09:18And you shred them.
09:19So we got a YMO to do all right, and we got gold dig.
09:24Gold dig, seven cut right here.
09:27One route, out route, four steps, post, aiming point, near upright, and our dig, 12 to 14 yards, check swing.
09:37Tell me about the route.
09:38I mean, you guys run this route all the damn time, don't you?
09:41We do.
09:42And how did you get to this post route?
09:44What made you go here?
09:46The middle of field safety.
09:47Number 17.
09:48We knew he was kind of a run fitter, trying to play both.
09:51They're trying to cheat.
09:52Defensive coordinators these days, trying to find their edge, trying to cheat with a guy who has a run responsibility and is still in the pass.
10:00He didn't get enough depth.
10:02Did you predetermine this?
10:04No.
10:05I'm going through my read.
10:07It's a progression-based read.
10:10I mean, that's a great freaking throw, but you know what I love is how you read it out.
10:15I mean, I've seen you throw the high cut, the seven cut over there.
10:18I've seen you throw it in the flat.
10:19Hell, I've seen you check the ball down.
10:21But to get here on the third play of the game sends a big message to everybody, including everybody in Ames, Iowa.
10:28So now you get picked to play the senior bowl.
10:31Fuck yeah.
10:32That had to fire you up a little bit.
10:33It did.
10:34Some guys pulled out of the game.
10:35They were too busy.
10:36They couldn't play.
10:37So who do they bring in there?
10:39They're bringing Seth Hannigan.
10:41The closer.
10:42And he throws a pass.
10:43Is this Jack Beck?
10:44Tell me about Jack Beck, the guy you threw the ball to to win the game.
10:47Jack Besh.
10:48Stud.
10:49Jack Besh.
10:50He just lost his brother tragically in the New Orleans incident.
10:54His name was Tiger Besh.
10:55I'm a Memphis Tiger.
10:56There were seven seconds on the clock.
10:58It was just a pretty surreal moment.
11:00God at work.
11:01That's what I think.
11:02At the buzzer.
11:03At the buzzer.
11:04Senior Bowl.
11:05But, you know, you're at the Senior Bowl all week and you're throwing and you're seeing
11:09the other quarterbacks.
11:10How do you feel you stacked up with everybody that was there?
11:12I'm right there with them.
11:13What kind of leader are you?
11:15You seem kind of quiet.
11:16My leadership definitely grew.
11:17When I was a true freshman starting, I kind of was a little timid, not as vocal.
11:23But by the time I was a senior, I was the man.
11:26I was the guy for the job.
11:27I'm in charge.
11:28But definitely more of a personal, like I said earlier, make that relationship one-on-one
11:34before you rip their ass.
11:35I just want to hear what kind of leader you are when shit hits the fan and it gets tough.
11:41Try and pick people back up and go on to the next.
11:44You're going to have a bad practice.
11:46We're going to have a bad game.
11:47We're going to have a bad day, you know?
11:49We never lose.
11:50We just run out of time.
11:51That's what I believe in.
11:52Yes, sir.
11:53You got to stay upbeat.
11:54You got to stay the course, man.
11:56Yes, sir.
11:57And that's one of the things that I've heard about you that's very impressive is when you
12:01guys do lose a game, you come back with a vengeance.
12:04And that's what I like.
12:06Take it out on somebody else the next week.
12:08You've been called a heady quarterback.
12:10And these are plays I'm talking about.
12:13I just want to hear from you what's clicking.
12:15Third and 17.
12:16We're playing Charlotte.
12:17Third and 18.
12:18We're at the plus 22 yard line.
12:21Third and 18.
12:22What's going through your mind?
12:23Hurry.
12:24Don't need to force anything to the end zone if it's not there.
12:26Get in better field goal position if we need to.
12:29Check down is available.
12:30Great play by our back right there.
12:32Great play by us.
12:33Don't take a sack and knock us out of field position.
12:35100%.
12:36That's a great play right there.
12:38I mean, the guys I've been around, Brett Favre, Joe Montana, you're playing Boise and this
12:42right tackle gets power rush.
12:44This shit is right in on you, man.
12:46And you got to make this throw from your own four yard line to get the hell out of here
12:50with this win.
12:51That is freaking awesome, man.
12:53That's how I used to do it.
12:54And then, are you in trouble with the law?
12:57Something like that.
12:58No, seriously.
12:59What the hell are you doing?
13:00You change your jersey number every year.
13:02I've seen a lot of shit in my life.
13:04I've never seen anybody.
13:06You show up, you're wearing number 14.
13:09Then the next year you're at number two.
13:11Now the next year you're wearing number five.
13:14And then the next year you're wearing, what are you doing?
13:16I kind of started in high school.
13:18Changed my number every year.
13:19Got to college.
13:20They just threw number 14 on me.
13:22I'm going to be, you know, I'm going to get lost in the mix.
13:25No.
13:26I'm going to win that fucking job.
13:27And then I'm going to be the starter the next four years.
13:30And then I got to choose my own number my sophomore year.
13:32So I was like, I'll change the number five.
13:35And at that point I'd done eight years of different numbers.
13:38I'm like, okay.
13:39I'll just keep doing it.
13:41Changed the number two and then went back to number nine my senior year.
13:44That's kind of the family number.
13:46My pops wore it.
13:48It's kind of weird watching tape.
13:49I'm like, is Hennigan hurt?
13:50Where the hell?
13:51I thought you were hurt.
13:52Where the hell's number two hurt?
13:54No.
13:55Okay.
13:56I'm never hurt.
13:57Just make a note.
13:58Quit changing freaking numbers.
13:59We're playing West Virginia.
14:01What is this?
14:02This is 17 jail.
14:03Show me the jail up there.
14:05Hurry up.
14:06What's this now?
14:07Jail.
14:08Alert it in.
14:09So you said alert, alert.
14:10Make sure your linemen don't go down field, right?
14:12And you told your slot receiver, act like you're blocking and take it up the field?
14:18That's the call.
14:19Great call.
14:20That's cold, man.
14:21That is really cold.
14:23I mean, that's sick.
14:25You know how to read progressions.
14:27Yes, sir.
14:28You take a lot of pride in that.
14:29Yes?
14:30Yes, sir.
14:31So what's this called?
14:32Call the play for me.
14:33All right.
14:34Zemo.
14:35Red drive.
14:36Got a check swing by the back.
14:37How do you read it?
14:38Open access.
14:39Man beater.
14:40High low.
14:41What's your footwork?
14:42What's your footwork?
14:43Footwork.
14:44Three plus one.
14:45If I have my open access, just punch that squeeze ball.
14:48If not, if I think it's a man free, I'll probably keep the middle safety occupied with
14:53my eyes.
14:54Bring a hitch, throw the seven cut.
14:56One thing I never understood about that play, see it?
14:58That's a man beater, that big box high fade over there.
15:01Yes, sir.
15:02So is the drive.
15:03Yeah.
15:04So if it's man to man, where are you throwing it?
15:06To the big box fade?
15:07You could have taken a shot right here.
15:08I wouldn't have been mad at you.
15:09Yeah.
15:10What makes you get to the drive and not to the high fade?
15:13When I first started my drop, I thought that DB, that nickel Sam was outside leverage.
15:19My receiver runs a great route and ends up winning, but I kind of got off it.
15:23Here's a JG favorite.
15:25It's one of my favorite plays.
15:26What play is this you're running on the goal line?
15:29That's power pass.
15:30That's your spider two wide banana.
15:32Yeah.
15:33Shit.
15:34You guys got everything here, man.
15:35Yes, sir.
15:36It's a really unique, fun offense.
15:38I see two backs, one back, no back.
15:40I see 12, 21.
15:41I see every personnel grouping known to man.
15:44Now, real quick, I got to learn about your dash pass.
15:47I don't know what it is, but I love this play.
15:51Two post patterns.
15:52I used to call it Pepper, and we would tag it with a deep cross.
15:56We might say Pepper X deep cross, Pepper Y deep cross.
16:00But what I see Memphis do is they take a drop, they lure the pass rush in, and then you kind of get out here and move the pocket a little bit.
16:08Pepper deep cross.
16:09What are you doing here, and what is this called?
16:11So right here we got Troop Right, Z-In, Gold Pacer Slide, X Little Rock.
16:16And what are you doing with your drop here?
16:18Trying to set them up just one step back and then on the roll.
16:22And if it's going to the left, spin out, take just a punch step squeeze, and then we're on the move.
16:28We're on the move.
16:29Get in the huddle and call it for me.
16:31Like the formation and the whole thing, like you really like it.
16:34I kind of feel like you're a robot.
16:35You're like blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
16:40Hey, let's go.
16:41Let's get in here.
16:42We got Troop Right, Z-In, Gold Pacer Slide, X Little Rock.
16:46On one, ready?
16:47That's what I'm talking about, man.
16:49I think the big criticism of you, really, if there is any, is I think there's not a criticism.
16:54I think there's a perception that you're not a great athlete and you don't have the vertical ball.
16:59But when I watch Memphis all the way back to your freshman year, shit.
17:04You guys have a hell of a vertical passing game.
17:07What's your feeling on your vertical game?
17:08What are the strengths that you have throwing the deep ball?
17:11I think I'm accurate with the deep ball.
17:13Nice touch, not overly just chucking it, locating the ball in the right place.
17:18Good catch right there.
17:19You know, when you throw for 15,000 yards, you got to make some of it down the field.
17:23But some of these passes are on the money, man.
17:26Now, let's go back to the Boise game because here's another team you beat, right?
17:30Yes, sir.
17:31I mean, we got West Virginia, Iowa State, Florida State, Mississippi.
17:35Now Boise's got your ass.
17:37I'm watching it.
17:3817 to nothing.
17:39My good friend, Ashton who?
17:42Jinty.
17:43Yeah, that's right.
17:44You know what he listens to?
17:45No.
17:46He listens to Migos.
17:47Migos.
17:48Migos.
17:49Write it down, man.
17:50I've been listening to Migos.
17:51Fucking awesome, man.
17:52Make a note about loam.
17:54L-O-M-M.
17:55L-O-M-M.
17:56You know what it means?
17:57Loud, open, moving mouth.
17:59Large.
18:00Large.
18:01Open, moving mouth.
18:02So I can understand you better.
18:03You Texans, you got a little bit of that two-step draw in you.
18:06You know what I mean.
18:07What was the name of this play?
18:08Give it to me like you love it again with some loam.
18:10Tripp's right.
18:11Weak.
18:12Gold.
18:13Sticks.
18:14Home run.
18:15I tell you what, you're getting better already, man.
18:16And now we get into Tripp's ex-isolation.
18:18Why are you smiling?
18:19That's our package right there.
18:20You're damn right it is.
18:21Get up there.
18:22Hurry up.
18:23We got to move, man.
18:24Let's use a red pen.
18:25You having fun?
18:26Hey, look at me.
18:27I want you to teach me like I'm a teammate of yours.
18:30We got Kansas.
18:31We got a bang eight right here.
18:34Post, aiming point near upright.
18:36Classic.
18:38Ran the piss out of it.
18:41It's called Kansas?
18:42Yep.
18:43Gold Kansas.
18:44Do you tag the X on a seam post or is that the whole play?
18:47That's the whole play.
18:49So Kansas, huh?
18:50Yes, sir.
18:51Now what if he has press coverage?
18:52What happens to that bang eight?
18:53Still running a bang eight.
18:54He's got to win.
18:55What if he gets a cloud?
18:56Still running a bang eight.
18:58Inside release.
18:59Five step.
19:00All right, have a seat.
19:01You're getting your ass kicked 17 to nothing.
19:03And I'm loving this.
19:04Because I tell all the freaking guys that work here, I say,
19:07get me all the Hennigan film when they're tighter behind in the second half.
19:12I want to see how you guys play when shit ain't all right.
19:15What's his play?
19:16Tripp's right?
19:17And you isolated who down here?
19:19Rock Taylor.
19:20Rock Taylor.
19:21He's been in here at the FFCA.
19:23FFCA.
19:24That's why I'm giving it some love, man.
19:26What was Rock tagged with?
19:27Rock has a GB.
19:29Go bear butt.
19:30What the hell's a GB?
19:32He runs a bear butt.
19:3310 to 12 yards.
19:34What's a bear butt?
19:3510 to 12 yards back down his stem.
19:36If he's off and runs a go, if he's pressed.
19:39And right here, he saw he was flat-footed, so he ran by him.
19:43Could have put a better ball on him.
19:45You call this a what?
19:46Bear butt.
19:47A GB.
19:48What's a bear butt?
19:49Show me what it means.
19:50You want me to run the route for you?
19:51With a bear ass or what?
19:52Bear ass.
19:53Yeah, show me.
19:54No one's ever told me to run a bear butt.
19:56A bear butt?
19:57Oh.
19:58No.
19:59I got you.
20:00You just come out.
20:01Run back down your stem.
20:02Why is that a bear butt?
20:04That's the name of the route.
20:06Let's change that name.
20:07Let's just call it a lightning or something.
20:09There's a show at Barstool called The Yak.
20:11These guys, they yak, man.
20:12They talk.
20:13You ever seen it?
20:14I don't know.
20:15Make a note.
20:16It's called Yak.
20:17Y-A-K.
20:18Y-A-K.
20:19So I'm going to propose the Yak Yak Play of the Week.
20:20The accurate pass of the week goes on the Yak.
20:24And I see you making a lot of pinpoint throws.
20:28It allows receivers to split people after the catch against zone,
20:32and it allows people to run after the catch.
20:35If you throw that ball two feet behind that receiver, it's a four-yard game.
20:38But if you put that ball foot in front of his numbers,
20:41I've seen that guy go down a pound, man.
20:44Talk to me a little bit about accuracy, how important it is,
20:48and what the key is to it.
20:49The key is being on time.
20:50And like you said, if it's man coverage like this,
20:53make sure he's able to run after the catch.
20:55And if it's zone, make sure it's away from the defender
20:58so he can drop step and get vertical.
20:59But I'll tell you one thing I admire about you, man,
21:01is you'll stand in there, take a hit.
21:03You can think at the line of scrimmage,
21:05and you can let your guys run after the catch.
21:08You're accurate.
21:09And some of these tight window quick releases are freaking awesome.
21:12Like this throw right here, this is all what?
21:15It's all location, man.
21:16Location.
21:17And that's awesome.
21:18Are you guys using a head coach or the coordinator
21:21to the quarterback helmet communication?
21:23Yes, sir.
21:24Well, I love that.
21:25Yeah.
21:26That's something I don't think a lot of colleges are using
21:28because I still see them looking over at the sidelines.
21:30Yeah.
21:31You know, if you look to me, what am I going to do?
21:33I'm going to flip you the bird.
21:35Don't ever take your eyes off the defense.
21:37What the hell are you doing here?
21:40Blue.
21:41Blue on two.
21:42What?
21:43Blue.
21:44That's our snap count.
21:45Blue.
21:46So the play is troop left, gold chip Seminole.
21:49Seminole is three verticals with chip protection, seven man chip,
21:52chip flat, chip OTB.
21:54Blue.
21:55Blue.
21:56So I'm clapping, and we knew they would look to the sideline
21:59when I looked to the sideline.
22:00Clap again.
22:01Read mine.
22:02Your body is looking at the sideline like you're looking for a play.
22:05Yes, sir.
22:06Look at these guys.
22:07They're clapping.
22:08Look at them.
22:09They don't even know you're snapping a fucking ball.
22:10You snap the ball and you shred them.
22:11You don't win the game, but you damn near pull it off.
22:14So what do you say here now?
22:16Troop left, gold chip Seminole.
22:19Blue, blue, blue.
22:20And blue means what?
22:21Blue on two.
22:22It's on the second clap.
22:23Ready?
22:24And I'm reading my three verticals.
22:29Have a seat.
22:30That's freaking awesome, man.
22:31You guys are really something else.
22:34One of the plays you're going to run today is bunch right.
22:37You're just going to say bunch right.
22:39You give them the formation.
22:40Freddie, Freddie, bunch right.
22:42Give me yellow fin.
22:44Yellow fin.
22:45And it's going to be Silva Silva said hut.
22:48You with me?
22:49Yes, sir.
22:5098 blister.
22:51F deep cross is all it is.
22:53But you got a Z ghost behind you.
22:55You with me?
22:56Yes, sir.
22:57Take me through it like we're playing.
22:58Like you love it.
22:59Like.
23:00Hey, Freddie, Freddie, Freddie.
23:01Hey, bunch right.
23:02Bunch right.
23:03Bunch right.
23:04Bunch right.
23:05Bunch right.
23:06Yellow fin.
23:07Yellow fin.
23:08Hey, we're going.
23:09We're going.
23:10We're going.
23:11We got some fat guy trying to tap out on defense.
23:14Fuck them.
23:15Let's go.
23:16Freddie, Freddie.
23:17Do it again.
23:18Freddie.
23:19We'll have some more for you.
23:20All right.
23:21Have a seat.
23:22You like that?
23:23I love it.
23:24Don't even look on the left.
23:25What's 12?
23:26One back, two tight ends.
23:27What's that mean?
23:28Right there, 11.
23:29One back, one tight end.
23:30Mm-hmm.
23:31What's 10 mean?
23:32No tight end, one back.
23:33How many wide outs?
23:34Four wide outs.
23:35What's 13?
23:36One back, three tight ends.
23:37So if I say 13X, I want an X receiver as the one receiver.
23:39My Z.
23:40Every one of these personnel groupings adds up to five, right?
23:43Yes, sir.
23:44But we never, ever talk about wide receivers.
23:46They got to figure it out.
23:47For sure.
23:48It's hard on guys like my assistant, Jake Malisek.
23:50He can't count to five.
23:52Now, whenever I was coaching, we had a tag.
23:55We called it Steeler.
23:57Steeler switched the X and Z.
24:00So if you said 12 Steeler, Jerry Rice would become the Z.
24:04Tim Brown would become the X.
24:06You got snug, Y's off, F is off, the Z is on and the X is on.
24:13Okay.
24:14Put the Y, Seth, all the way out there on the right off the ball.
24:18Why?
24:19If you say snug right shorty, snug right shorty, he's going to motion in and land there.
24:24You with me?
24:25Yes, sir.
24:26Would you say, hey, Freddy, Freddy, Freddy.
24:29Snug right shorty.
24:31Snug right shorty.
24:33Albert Einstein.
24:35Hurry up.
24:36Hurry up.
24:37Set hut.
24:38Blue 85.
24:39Blue 85.
24:40Set hut.
24:41Let's go Hulk Hogan, Los Angeles.
24:46Hulk Hogan, Los Angeles.
24:49Silva, Silva.
24:50Set hut.
24:51Could you pull that off?
24:52Yes, sir.
24:53You're going Freddy, Freddy, Freddy.
24:54Freddy, Freddy, Freddy.
24:55Yeah.
24:56I go, hey, let's go bunch right.
24:57Let's go yellow fin.
24:58Could you do it?
24:59Yes, sir.
25:00Freddy, Freddy.
25:01Let's go snug right shorty.
25:02Look for Hulk Hogan.
25:03You understand what I'm saying now, don't you?
25:05You're saying Freddy, Freddy, snug right shorty.
25:08Look for Hulk Hogan.
25:09So I'll go Einstein, Einstein.
25:12Blue 80.
25:13Blue 80.
25:14Set hut.
25:15Look, see, and we're going to go.
25:18Hey, L.A.
25:19L.A.
25:20Based on what?
25:21Based off safety rotation or the three tech, wherever that may be.
25:26L.A. Hulk Hogan.
25:27L.A. Hulk Hogan.
25:28Silva, Silva's that?
25:29Good.
25:30So we don't need to huddle it ever, do we?
25:32No.
25:33Omaha is another two and three hundred jet throw.
25:36I'd like you to be underneath the center in our two and three hundred jet throws.
25:40As much as you guys like the gun and all that bullshit, I want to get under the center.
25:45Because I want to get under the center to hand the ball off once in a while.
25:48But if we ever call Doc Wright clamp, 200 jet Omaha, four, it's two stick outs and two quick outs.
25:56You with me?
25:57Yes, sir.
25:58And the back checks through.
25:59We just call it Omaha.
26:00Omaha.
26:01So let's say you got snug right, 200 jet Omaha.
26:04I'm a dumbass play caller.
26:06And they come out and they're as hard cover too.
26:08What would you say?
26:09Easy, easy.
26:10Let's go Hulk Hogan, L.A. or New York.
26:12And then how would you put the ball in play?
26:14Silva, Silva's head up.
26:15Okay, let's stand up, smarty pants.
26:17Get in the huddle.
26:18Hey, hey, hey.
26:19I got the walkie talkie.
26:20Hey, Seth, Seth, let's go snug right, 200 jet Omaha.
26:24Get a completion.
26:25Hurry up.
26:26Here you go.
26:27Hey, let's go snug right, 200 jet Omaha.
26:28On one.
26:29Ready?
26:30It's cover two.
26:31It's hard cover two.
26:32It's obviously cover two.
26:33Hey, where's the three tag, coach?
26:34To the right.
26:35Hey, easy, easy, easy, easy.
26:36Let's go, hey, New York, Hulk Hogan.
26:38Hulk Hogan.
26:39New York, Hulk Hogan.
26:41You good?
26:42Hey, Silva, Silva's head up.
26:45I might draft you higher than I did coming in here, man.
26:47That's really good.
26:48Very good, very good.
26:49Let's go, baby.
26:50Very good.
26:51Is that right?
26:52Yes, sir.
26:53Have a seat.
26:54You ever have a cat come in your house and just shit all over the floor?
26:57I've never had that happen.
26:58Don't like it, man.
26:59I hate it.
27:00You got to let these cats know.
27:01Hey, when we're snug, watch a cat, watch a cat.
27:04Be very sensitive about the cats.
27:06Lineman got to get out on a bang.
27:08Back's got to scan out and pass protection.
27:11But I want you to be alert for these cats.
27:14Now, if we ever sense a double corner cat, you can smell these things out.
27:20You start hearing these defensive guys.
27:22They make their signals.
27:24They can't help themselves.
27:25They're all fired up.
27:26Cougar.
27:27Cougar.
27:28Cougar.
27:29Cougar.
27:30Like a cat.
27:31Not a cougar that you're thinking of.
27:32Yeah.
27:33Okay.
27:34Don't be...
27:35Not exactly.
27:36Yeah.
27:37You cat, cougar.
27:38It's a form of a cat, you see?
27:39Yes, sir.
27:40Cougar, New York.
27:41I want to run right into the cat.
27:42What's automatic front coverage mean?
27:43It means if we're in a snug, the defensive coordinator might have that automatic check.
27:47You ever met Luke Keekly?
27:48I've never met him.
27:49You think you're sharp?
27:50You ought to meet him.
27:51That's something I'm basically going to...
27:52He could be a defense coordinator tonight.
27:54You ever met Fred Warner of the 49ers?
27:55Never met him.
27:56He sees a snug formation.
27:57All he's got to do is say, sleep, sleep, sleep.
28:00Do something.
28:01So when we're using our dummy counts, our sensors are like...
28:06We're listening to their calls.
28:08We're seeing their signals.
28:09So when we go over on the sideline, okay, we're actually communicating with one another.
28:14Not on a tweet.
28:15Not on a fucking email.
28:16You know, if someone brings a double corner blitz at you, it'd be the last fucking time they bring it.
28:20Now, you play the same school every year at Memphis, right?
28:23Yes, sir.
28:24I'm just curious.
28:25When you were a freshman, you beat Navy 35 to 17.
28:28And then in 2022, you beat them again, didn't you?
28:31Yep.
28:3237 to 13.
28:33So you beat them again.
28:34Now in 2023, you beat them again.
28:3628, 24.
28:37But what did they get you on right here?
28:40Boof!
28:41They coming, aren't they?
28:42Yeah.
28:43What was your plan against the all-out blitz against Navy?
28:46I mean, you've seen them for three years, man of war, whatever you call it.
28:49We had, depending on the formation, if we're in detached three by one, get into a little slam route,
28:55checking, sliding into it, throwing a flat right now, blocking the two outside defenders.
29:00And then later in the game, he was just like, let it ride.
29:03Because they were giving it to us like 40% of the time.
29:08Look at you.
29:09We're in the F7 right there.
29:10Make it no way.
29:11Get a fresh page, too.
29:12Yes, sir.
29:13Double cats.
29:14Double cat.
29:15You look forward to seeing it.
29:16What's the run audible?
29:17Cougar.
29:18Okay.
29:19When they start all-out blitzing us, that'd be the last time they do it.
29:22I did it to Peyton Manning.
29:23Now we call it an all-out blitz against Peyton Manning.
29:25He saw it.
29:26He flashed a hand signal, touched down.
29:28You know what he did after he did it?
29:29He ran right by my sideline.
29:31He says, are you out of your fucking mind?
29:33Hmm.
29:34I swear he did that.
29:35You know that?
29:36That's impressive.
29:37That's what I want you to do.
29:38When you see an all-out blitz, I want you to have the inventory.
29:41Forget about recognizing it.
29:43I want you to have the right audible, the right protection.
29:46And I want it stuck so far up their ass they can't see straight.
29:50But now you fall behind and you got to grind.
29:52This is what I do love about you.
29:54You got to grind to get us back in the game.
29:56How'd you do it?
29:57What was the key to it?
29:58Weather the storm.
30:00Even if something's going bad at the beginning,
30:02our offense is going to make the plays to win the game.
30:05And that falls on my shoulders.
30:07We got the ball with Seth Hannigan at quarterback.
30:09A minute 20 to go.
30:10Take me through the drive.
30:11You got three timeouts.
30:12Look at this field position.
30:13Great field position.
30:14What's the play?
30:15What's the call?
30:16Duo left.
30:17BMO.
30:18Chief is a zero route.
30:19Six step out route to the field.
30:21Dwarf route by the tight end.
30:22Middle read by the A.
30:24Curled by the outside receiver.
30:25Took the zero.
30:26There's no doubt we're going to win this game.
30:28There's no doubt.
30:29We got four downs and three timeouts.
30:32You got hammered here.
30:33Did you get hurt?
30:34Not majorly.
30:35Well, you got your ass knocked off.
30:37Look at that.
30:38Then on the next play, we throw the pick, right?
30:41Yes, sir.
30:42What'd you take away from this?
30:43Just don't force it.
30:45Especially in that situation.
30:47Like dominate situational football was my mentality.
30:50And that's not doing that second and 10.
30:53I still have more downs.
30:55Sure.
30:56So there's no need for that throw in that situation.
30:58And you know what?
30:59You got your ass knocked off the play before.
31:01I had people tell me, did you see that interception he threw against Navy?
31:04I go, did you see him get his freaking head knocked off the play before it?
31:08You know?
31:09Yeah.
31:10That's no excuse.
31:11Never forget Navy.
31:12I've been in the NFL in games.
31:14Everybody says, ah, you guys are 10 point favorites.
31:17You guys should win that one.
31:18We went to the Jets.
31:19They hadn't won a game all year.
31:21Oh, you should win that game.
31:23Shut the fuck up.
31:24They'll knock our ass off if we ain't ready to play.
31:27I don't think guys give a shit about pass pro.
31:30We want to run RPOs and clap our hands and run 140 plays and have an NIL fucking deal.
31:35So I want to pick up these blitzes.
31:38I want you to learn how to get the back out.
31:41I want you to learn how to get that running back to help you with the chip.
31:45You with me?
31:46Yes, sir.
31:47Make this sound.
31:48Like a choo choo choo.
31:50Check your assignment.
31:52Check your assignment.
31:53Chip the defensive end.
31:54Chip the defensive end.
31:55And then check down.
31:56And check down.
31:57Chip, chip, chip.
31:58Chip, chip, chip, chip.
31:59You can be back there as a quarterback and you can fix the protection.
32:03Hey, Lou, Lou, Lou, Lou, Lou.
32:05You're good.
32:06Tell the back he's good.
32:07He's good.
32:08That helps him.
32:09You know, I can go chip and check down.
32:10Yeah.
32:11Help that son of a bitch, man.
32:13You got Josh Jacobs standing back there.
32:15Let him know.
32:16Yeah, you're good, bro.
32:17Let him do his deal, man.
32:18I'm just telling you.
32:19It's a freaking awesome thing.
32:20Look at this running back right here.
32:22Feel that speed rush right there?
32:23Yeah.
32:24What should he do to that guy?
32:25Chip him.
32:26Isn't that the play he got hurt on?
32:28Why do you think I'm making such a big deal of this?
32:31Because it's a big deal.
32:32If I would have stuck his inside foot and shoulder into that guy's outside number, we might be hoisting the NCAA championship trophy.
32:41But we all got to get involved and excited about what?
32:45Pass Protection.
32:46Who sang that song, I'm so excited?
32:50The Pointer Sisters.
32:52Fucking A, they're unbelievable, man.
32:54They got one song called Baby Come and Get It.
32:57Come and get it while it's hot.
32:59I love it, man.
33:01Can't use it on my show because, you know, there's restrictions and all that bullshit.
33:05Ah.
33:06I know who the rushers are every week, too.
33:08I go, a lot of these young guys, they don't even know the protection plan.
33:12They don't even know who the hell the rushers are.
33:14Our J formations, real quick, is for our joker tight end.
33:19So, an 11 personnel, if I use a J formation, the Y is on the right and Jen right.
33:25You got me?
33:26Uh-huh.
33:27And the I-A or O talks to the F receiver.
33:31That's the F.
33:32If we say Jen right, the F is inside.
33:34You with me?
33:35Yes, sir.
33:36If I say jam right, the F is jammed in the middle.
33:39And if I say Joe right, the F goes outside.
33:42You with me?
33:43Yes, sir.
33:44So, it's Jen, jam, and Joe.
33:47Instead of lining up in Jen right, tout.
33:50Are you with me?
33:51Uh-huh.
33:52We're going to start in dice right.
33:54The Y is out here.
33:55I'm going to call dice right, Z left tap.
33:58And he's going to come over here and land right here in the slot.
34:01You with me?
34:02Yeah.
34:03And the Y will shift out.
34:04Duster.
34:05Duster.
34:06Duster is a three-receiver term where we have two unders and we have a corner.
34:14That man can never break to the post.
34:16He has to go to the corner.
34:17But these are two unders.
34:19We've run it 100 years, yes?
34:20Yes, sir.
34:21That's Duster.
34:22And when we say H cop over here, the halfback has a choice route, but he can only sit down
34:29or break out.
34:30That's why we call it cop.
34:32He cannot break inside.
34:34Because behind him, we have a strike route by our tight end at 12 yards.
34:37You with me?
34:38Yes, sir.
34:39How do you say it?
34:40Jen Wright, Tout.
34:4182 Duster.
34:42H cop.
34:43So I love this play.
34:44I prefer what...
34:45What do I really want?
34:46You want split safeties.
34:48So be alert for Rock and Lava in these J formations.
34:52Now, Rock, you would have to tell the tight end if he was out there in Tout.
34:57Hey, come back in here!
34:58Like you just saw Waller do.
35:00He's got to get back into core so he can pass protect.
35:03If you go to the tight end on the left, and you go, hey, come back in here, it's Lava.
35:08If you're in Jen Wright, Tout, and it's an all out blitz, and we go, what's he saying
35:13right here?
35:14Hey, come in, come in.
35:15Rock, rock, rock, rock.
35:16And we go score.
35:17Score.
35:18Score is a different three receiver term.
35:21On a score, this man's going to go pick that guy, and he's coming underneath.
35:26You with me?
35:27Yes, sir.
35:28And if this guy's out here, he's going to run an under takeoff in case we get fooled
35:33or they play in and out on us.
35:34You with me?
35:35Yep.
35:36You love it or like it?
35:37I love it.
35:38So this is for all out blitzes against Navy.
35:39You with me?
35:40Hey, rock, rock.
35:41Score.
35:42Score.
35:43Silva, Silva, said that.
35:44You got me?
35:45Yes, sir.
35:46I fucking love it, don't you?
35:47Yeah.
35:48Go back and get a fifth year.
35:49You get Navy one more time.
35:50Be ready for that score check.
35:51For sure.
35:52Now, it's a long season.
35:53Let's get a cheetah.
35:55Could we go Lava, Lava, Lava?
35:57Yes, sir.
35:58We fix the protection.
35:59We slide into the blitz.
36:01Cheetah.
36:02Now, I'm going to go from inside.
36:04I'm going to go pick that corner.
36:06He's running a one-step bullet.
36:08You with me?
36:09Yep.
36:10And our inside receiver, he runs a stick nod to clear it out.
36:12You got me?
36:13Yes, sir.
36:14Some teams run corner.
36:15We've done both.
36:16Last route of the day is Jade.
36:18Jade.
36:19Jade is a three-receiver term, kind of like Duster is.
36:23Yes?
36:24Yes, sir.
36:25White tout running our Jade.
36:27I'm not going to get into our protection.
36:28We don't have time, but I want that under return by number one.
36:32You with me?
36:33Yes, sir.
36:34We want a post at number two and a corner at number three.
36:37I'd like to read all three levels.
36:38You with me, Seth?
36:39Yes, sir.
36:40And on the back side, we got a wide basic and a check chip two-by-two check down.
36:46You got me?
36:47Yes, sir.
36:48I love this play against cover three.
36:50Love it.
36:51Especially three Jade.
36:52Let's just say you wanted to throw a quick combination to your right.
36:55You with me?
36:56Yes, sir.
36:57The call is Roger.
36:58Roger is a five-man slide.
36:59You got me?
37:00Yep.
37:01If you're going to your right, what's the call?
37:02Roger.
37:03And you better veer to your right because that guy's on what?
37:05Unblocked.
37:06If you're in a no back set and you're going to throw it to your left and it's a shit show.
37:13It's not Roger.
37:14It's Larry.
37:15You got me?
37:16Yeah.
37:17And you veer to your what?
37:18Left.
37:19Make a note about Quaid.
37:20Quaid is a quick out by number two and it's a fade by number one.
37:23You with me?
37:24Yeah.
37:25So you could have Larry Bragg over here if you wanted to throw this or you could go Roger
37:30Quaid over there.
37:31I kept going.
37:32Our quarterback is going Roger Quaid, Roger Quaid.
37:35The referee goes, don't you know it's Dennis Quaid?
37:38I go, you dumb fuck.
37:40We're not talking about fucking movies here.
37:42We're shredding somebody.
37:45Don't even look over here.
37:47This is a surprise for you.
37:49I'm just so excited to turn around.
37:51Can't wait.
37:52Okay.
37:53There you go.
37:55You're an empty.
37:57Left picture there.
37:58Go over there.
37:59What's the call?
38:00Double double.
38:02Good.
38:03Top right.
38:04Right there.
38:05What's the call right there?
38:06Right here?
38:07Yeah.
38:08Lou.
38:09What's a Lou mean?
38:10Lou puts our center going to the left.
38:12What's that right guard got to know on a Lou call?
38:14He's man to man with that tackle.
38:16God dang right.
38:17Down here at the bottom.
38:18What's that?
38:19We got a bang.
38:20Bang R.
38:21Bang R.
38:22Because he's a threat and he's on the line of scrimmage.
38:24Safety's capping him, right?
38:25Yes, sir.
38:26He's activating him, isn't he?
38:27Yes, sir.
38:28Over there.
38:29Top right.
38:30It's all out blitz.
38:31Zero.
38:32They got double A's.
38:33Double A's.
38:34I could go Larry Quaid.
38:35I could go Roger.
38:36That's awesome, man.
38:37Roger.
38:38Is this a tight end?
38:39Yep.
38:40Tight end attached?
38:41I could attach him.
38:42I usually did.
38:43But you could go Roger Bragg.
38:44The cheetah.
38:45Cheetah, right?
38:46Now you're talking.
38:47You like it or love it?
38:48I probably covered more football in three hours with you than I covered in 33 years with
38:54my wife.
38:55Congratulations.
38:56That was a lot of football.
38:58Very good shit, man.
39:09Seth Hennigan is the most experienced quarterback we have.
39:13A lot of people are curious about his athleticism and what kind of zip he has on the football,
39:18but I want to see it for myself.
39:20It's one thing to watch these guys throw on film, but it's another thing to see them
39:25throw it live.
39:26I think a couple of these drills are really going to help these guys get better.
39:30And if they can get 1% better, man, it makes me feel nice.
39:51Right back at us, right down the hash.
39:53Pluck it and tuck it.
39:54Come right at us.
39:55That's it.
39:56Good.
39:57Good.
40:02Reach for that rock.
40:03Cut the flight time down and pluck it.
40:05Love that.
40:06Tap, tap.
40:07Sideline drill.
40:08Make them work.
40:09That's what we want.
40:10Drag them in.
40:11Drag them both.
40:12Dot the T.
40:13Love that.
40:14Just come all flat down the line.
