WATCH: Everything From Hawks Head Coach Quin Snyder After Blowout Loss to the Wizards
Transcript
00:00 I think we hung in there in the first half,
00:06 I think down 11 at halftime, really hadn't made a shot.
00:12 I felt like if we continued to defend,
00:16 that we were perfect, I thought we'd put ourselves in a decent position.
00:24 And then obviously the third quarter,
00:28 I think it was a dagger, we have to regroup a little bit.
00:33 Not a little bit, we need to regroup, and some of that is fine.
00:39 Collectively, I think we need to communicate.
00:44 If there's one thing that you point to that I see that's not there,
00:51 that can fix a lot of things, whatever those situations are.
00:57 Whether it's small, small pick and roll, it's transition defense,
01:02 we have to be willing to talk, and all those different things to get us on
01:06 the same page on both ends.
01:09 And I thought our shot selection tonight was good.
01:13 We didn't see the ball go in.
01:16 There's still sometimes we're passing shots up, but
01:19 we've gotta keep taking open looks.
01:22 And when you're not seeing the ball go in, that's hard too.
01:25 >> Yeah, I was just about to ask that psychologically.
01:27 How does not seeing the ball going kind of affect everything else on the court?
01:32 >> Yeah, I mean, guys are human, and there's certainly a lift when you feel
01:38 like you're doing the right thing and you're not rewarded for it ultimately.
01:44 But when you're scoring, that hasn't been, we've had bad shooting nights,
01:50 but I didn't think we came apart from that.
01:54 As I said, there's times when you have to take those if they're good shots.
02:00 And that's not to say you don't drive the ball, you make quick decisions and
02:04 then kick it when the ball changed sides of the floor.
02:07 I thought good things happened.
02:10 But again, you're in transition defense situations even more.
02:18 And we got driven, and we've gotta do a better job containing the ball,
02:21 particularly when we're more aggressive and pick them all.
02:25 We're gonna be in closeout situations.
02:27 And they hit a lot of those shots early, and
02:28 then as the game went on, they began to drive us in those closeout situations.
02:34 >> Coach, you emptied your bench for the second game in a row.
02:37 A lot of people might think those are garbage minutes, but
02:39 people like Trent and Garrison have gotten some good playing time off of that.
02:42 I'm curious to know, what are you looking for when you do that and
02:45 you put those players in?
02:46 >> Really the same thing that you're looking for with the rotational guys.
02:52 You want them to be disciplined defensively, you want them to get back and
02:57 execute and try to generate good shots.
02:59 [BLANK_AUDIO]
03:03 >> Third quarter, I think it was 840, you called a timeout.
03:05 You got beaten deep on a fast break.
03:08 I'm curious, what specifically did you see there that you needed to address?
03:12 >> Well, it was more than just one possession.
03:15 It was accumulation.
03:16 That's usually when those timeouts come,
03:18 if you're gonna call an early timeout before the mandatory.
03:22 Usually you see a run, and that's what that was.
03:29 They leak out after they can test shots.
03:35 And for the most part, we did a good job of the other guy in the high
03:41 quarter and getting back, and sometimes, there was a few times it just kind of
03:45 went over an extended hand, but again, we have to get it done in those situations.
03:53 Our guys know that.
03:54 We call the timeout to get refocused and have a good possession offensively.
04:00 >> When you go down 10 early on in the second quarter and
04:06 team like yours that shoots a lot from three,
04:10 is there an emphasis or focus to look two or three,
04:12 even when in the first quarter you might not have shot?
04:14 >> Yeah, this is a very common debate.
04:18 When a team isn't shooting well, everybody says, go inside.
04:21 It really has, if you have a post presence like that, and
04:27 we have some guys that post, go inside to me means drive the ball.
04:33 And oftentimes, or make the right decision.
04:37 And oftentimes, you're not gonna get all the way to the rim.
04:40 We played through the post a couple times tonight, and
04:42 I thought we used our post guys to pass the ball.
04:45 Yes, there's a point when the ball's not going in,
04:49 you don't wanna just, but you don't wanna pass shots up.
04:53 I think it has more to do with what your focus is.
04:57 And there's times when you can make a quick decision to get to the rim,
05:02 and then you can just drop out.
05:05 That's usually something that is really good as far as stopping a run,
05:10 and when you're not making.
05:12 But the other part is if people close out on you and they're not guarding you,
05:16 it's very difficult to drive them.
05:18 Because you're driving into a crowd and a lot of times, you don't get anything.
05:22 That happened a few times tonight.
05:24 We had some shot clock violations cuz we passed up shots.
05:27 And then the next shot you get, or the next opportunity for a shot,
05:30 is not a good one.
05:31 And like I said, if you take those shots, you have a chance to rebound them too.
05:36 And if they're a good shot for a team,
05:39 we've had situations before where you're not making.
05:44 And particularly when you're down later, you wanna keep shooting,
05:47 cuz some of those shots get you back in the game.
05:50 I wouldn't wanna tell Bogey to pass up open ones.
05:55 I wouldn't like our guys to catch and drive the ball and then kick it.
05:59 But that might end up being a three-two.
06:05 >> Given this is the second poor performance in a row on a back to back,
06:08 do you just chalk this up to just, again, just a bad performance on the quarter?
06:12 Do you feel that any of the external noise maybe surrounding the team is having
06:15 any effect on you guys?
06:17 >> I think both, tonight was different than last night.
06:22 Last night we were on our heels the entire game.
06:29 It may not have looked as different on the box floor, but
06:33 those were two different games.
06:35 As I said, I thought we were generating good shots tonight and
06:39 they weren't going in.
06:41 And we had possessions, there was a number of possessions defensively where we
06:44 guarded well.
06:46 And Kuzma hit a tough turnaround over an extended hand.
06:49 The ball bounces the wrong way and they get a shot.
06:55 So we have to play through those possessions.
07:00 Anytime, whether it's you're down, you're not playing well,
07:06 there's always opportunities to kind of look outside.
07:10 I think our guys continue to be focused.
07:13 And as I said, to regroup a little bit right now is a good thing.
07:17 And we're playing a lot of games.
07:20 We're four and six, four and six.
07:22 We've got some games coming quickly and
07:25 not a lot of time to practice and regroup that way.
07:29 But I think just psychologically for us to dig in and focus.
07:33 As I said, I think if we play, we can play better.
07:37 But I think defensively there was more focus.
07:41 And we see the ball going and
07:44 we'll have a chance to have a very different result.
07:49 Okay? >> Great,
07:50 and the opposing paid points obviously were a big problem in the first quarter,
07:53 Indiana last night.
07:54 Again, tonight Washington had 60 points in the paint,
07:58 had a bunch in that run in the third quarter.
08:00 What, I guess, what do you attribute that to and what's the potential fix?
08:04 >> Well, there's really, there's two situations.
08:09 One, I think we've gotta do a better job guarding the ball.
08:13 And as I said before, that usually, that could mean closing out.
08:17 But trying to not give direct line drives where we can help.
08:20 And there's other situations where you've got a 6'8" idea.
08:26 We're giving up a lot of, giving up some physicality in those situations.
08:31 And people are putting their shoulder down and getting into us.
08:34 And it's difficult for us to, those are higher percentage shots for those guys.
08:39 And again, it gets back to the same thing.
08:44 Not allowing the ball to get in there.
08:47 But as I said, if someone's going full speed and they're driving into you,
08:50 bumping you, you gotta make a stand.
08:52 I mean, we had two or three times we tried to step in front, take a charge.
08:55 That's one thing we can do.
08:55 Clint can come over and contest the shot.
09:01 But if it's deep like that, the ball is in the paint.
09:03 There's offensive rebounding opportunities.
09:07 As I'm going through this, these are all the things we need to do better.
