00:00That's the question these multi-generational families are trying to
00:04answer. They're on a mission to challenge the common health issues we all face, from
00:11stress, anxiety gets worse when things are out of control, to pain, as we age,
00:16joints become stiff, to fertility, it was very intense, and the aging brain. If you
00:23don't use the function, you lose the function. Our families will seek support
00:28from their local AMCAL pharmacists. Undergo preventative measures. It feels so
00:33nice. Learn from the experts. Relax your body. Make some noise people. And try our
00:38bold new ideas. We'll start at the source, challenge our minds, build our bodies.
00:45Beautiful. And discover how to support the ones we love. It was a really proud
00:52moment for me. To feel well. My heart is so full at the moment. And stay well.
00:57For you. For life.
01:02The fun-loving Foxells are our first family to break generational boundaries and try
01:10new ways to help them boost their immunity. There's a lot of competition in the family.
01:14It should be interesting. Not sure what to expect. And while a nice warm bath might come
01:20to mind.
01:22Three, two, one.
01:25Will a nice bath be the answer? No chance in the world.
01:28It's lovely nervous. I'm probably the one that will struggle most.
01:32Will the kids be willing to get their hands dirty? Soar through the soil. In order to stay
01:36well? Since farming here, we don't get sick anywhere near as much. And will Anne and Naomi bond
01:41over a first-time mother-daughter experience. I've had a lot of different types of massage,
01:46but not a lymphatic one. I'm hoping this is a lot more gentle. Lymphatic drainage, it is very different
01:52from a normal massage. Like many young families, the Foxells face challenges every day. Like
02:05packing lunch boxes, juggling activities, and staying healthy as winter creeps up on them. So
02:17they've challenged me to find new ways to help them boost their immunity.
02:24Well, welcome, Foxells. Thank you so much for being our well-being guinea pigs. You're welcome.
02:30You've been very game for this. Obviously, winter is here and we need to build our immune system. But
02:38you family are a little bit more about summertime. That is true. That is true. So when it comes to
02:45winter, is there anything that sort of brings up more concerns for you as a family or individually?
02:50Trying to stay well is pretty important, especially with having three kids. So once one person gets sick,
02:56it tends to be a bit of a knock-on effect. It's out of respect for Anne, too, that I don't want to pick
03:02something up. Yes. So I'm actually immune compromised. So I have to be very vigilant because if I do come
03:09down with something, I tend to get it a lot more severely and it hangs around for a lot longer.
03:14Creating that barrier for Anne is really, really important, clearly.
03:18Yes, that's right. So having a healthy immune system is imperative, especially, Adam, as a school
03:24teacher, you're around kids all the time. I always say it's like a petri dish at school.
03:30Yeah, kids are disgusting, but they're lovely. But they do tend to sneeze outwardly a lot and wipe
03:37their noses on things. And usually very close to you when they sneeze as well. They don't keep a
03:42healthy distance. Now, while I can't stop kids being kids, I might be able to help the foxholes prepare
03:48for what's ahead. So how important is it to stay on top of our health, particularly during the cooler
03:55months? The cooler months are the time of the year when we all seem to come down with all sorts of sniffles
04:00and colds. Those of us who have young kids at daycare, out and about in jobs where you're front
04:06facing, serving lots of customers, may be more susceptible to catching a cold. So really protecting
04:11those people is really important. Okay, so how can we build our immunity? Making sure that we're
04:17managing our stress, that you are resting, eating well and looking after yourself is really important.
04:23Hopefully we can avoid the common cold this winter. Absolutely.
04:26To ease the foxholes into their first immune boosting challenge, I thought I'd send them to
04:33the place they feel most at home. But instead of saying castles and surf, today they'll be taking a
04:40dip in an ice bath. Which might not sound appealing at first. I don't know what to expect. Slightly nervous,
04:47something that we haven't done before. But with its benefits, may be very well worth the challenge.
04:53So we're going to be helping you guys to improve your health, increase your immunity and the more
04:58consistent you can be with these practices, the more that you feel the benefits. I tried to do cold
05:03showers for a while but... We went stum-ho for a bit and then gave up. What's the oldest that you've
05:09plunged into the ice bath? We've had people down here in their 80s, there's no age limit. I'm a bit apprehensive
05:16about getting in an ice bath. I don't know what to expect. I'm just in a situation where I'm going
05:21into the unknown. Elise's first tool should be particularly helpful in calming those nerves.
05:28The breath is a tool that is going to help you when you're in your ice bath.
05:33Our inhale is activating for the body and our exhale is calming. The longer we make that exhale,
05:40the calmer the body is going to become. Breathwork is a really key component in cold therapy. It allows
05:48us to be able to stay in the ice for longer and it will also allow us to regulate our nervous system.
05:55Breathing in and out. In and out. That's it. And how are you feeling now?
06:04Much calmer, I think. A lot less jittery. So I feel like I've calmed right down,
06:10which will be good once I get in the ice. Awesome.
06:15Now, while ice baths might seem like a novel idea for some, cold water therapy has been used
06:21for centuries. And for those who can brave the full two minutes, comes with a host of benefits.
06:27The benefits of cold therapy are so extensive. Some studies have shown that
06:34it does increase white blood cell count within the body and this then results in a really great
06:39improvement in our immune system response. Go on, you can do it. I mightn't be able to do it,
06:45but you can do it. Out of the three that are going in, I'm probably the one that will struggle most.
06:53There's a lot of competition in the Cottrell family. So I feel like if I get up first,
06:57I'm going to be ridiculed for the next couple of years. So I think I'm going to have to stay in,
07:01regardless of if my body's rejecting itself. We're going to hop in in three, two, one,
07:08stepping over and a long exhale as you lower yourself down into the bath.
07:15When we hop into the ice bath, our body immediately goes into fight or flight.
07:23The heart rate will increase significantly and our breathing rate will also increase.
07:27Often we will experience a gasp response. So taking a really big,
07:34deep, quick breath and a short, shallow breath high into the chest.
07:38Initially, obviously you could feel your body tense up and the breathing became a lot shorter.
07:44But then as soon as you engage those breathing techniques that we were being coached through,
07:49it was quite a peaceful sense of calm that came over you.
07:52Amazing work. Now you've got your breathing under control. Can you start to relax your body?
07:59When I got in, I just tried to focus on my breath, close my eyes and just really focus.
08:05I could hear the kids shouting, breathe, breathe, breathe, just sort of broke the ice a bit.
08:09No pun intended.
08:09You can do it.
08:10You can do it.
08:11And yeah, I felt like I was really relaxed into it then. So it was really good.
08:14Three, two, one.
08:17Yeah, that was amazing. I feel great.
08:24You enjoyed it?
08:24I think I could have stayed in longer.
08:26Next up is Grandpa John, but he's not feeling quite as confident as his daughter.
08:33Whether I'll last the two minutes is going to be a bit debatable.
08:38If I feel my heart going, I think I'll put my hand up and ask to come out.
08:42And we're going to be hopping in, in three, two, one, stepping over.
08:49That's it. Beautiful work.
08:51Come on, Poppy.
08:52That's it.
08:57Go, Poppy.
09:00Go on, Poppy.
09:00Okay, come on.
09:01He's doing it.
09:03When I first got in, I thought I'm not going to be able to do the two minutes.
09:07Every time you feel like getting out,
09:09just take two more rounds of breath and feel your body relax.
09:14But when I got comfortable and just started to breathe properly,
09:19it was quite an uplifting feeling.
09:22You've got this.
09:23I didn't feel threatened, so it was good.
09:25Three, two, one.
09:28Give him a clap.
09:30I want to do another minute.
09:31Well done.
09:33Awesome.
09:36So congratulations on your very first ice bar.
09:39How are you feeling?
09:40What an experience.
09:42I don't think I realised it would be quite so intense in a good way.
09:47I guess quite immersive, but transformative.
09:51And you're going to be doing one with me next.
09:53No chance at all.
09:54When we think about preparing ourselves for winter, jumping into an ice-cold bath seems
10:08somewhat counterintuitive, but it is what I had you do.
10:13Evie, how was it for you watching mum, dad and grandpa jump in the ice bath?
10:18Well, they definitely seemed very cold in the face, and I could see how much they were trying to stay in.
10:25When I went in, and I didn't want to embarrass myself and not last the two minutes, it was all about breathing, you know, through the nose.
10:33But I was apprehensive.
10:34Yes, but you're a convert now?
10:36Yeah, I'll do it again.
10:37I've still not been able to brave it myself.
10:40You'll get there, Ali.
10:42Were you a bit apprehensive about it, Naomi?
10:45I was excited.
10:46So I do a lot of winter swimming, but I'd never done an actual ice bath.
10:49So I knew it was good if you saw muscles before, after sport, that kind of thing.
10:53But I didn't quite realise just how far-reaching the benefits were.
10:57Now that they've had an ice bath, we got one for my mum's birthday.
11:01Was this your idea, Adam?
11:03Yeah, I bought it for Naomi's birthday, yeah.
11:04But you happened to use it?
11:06Yeah, I'll use it.
11:06He's used it.
11:07Yeah, I've used it.
11:08We're all gathering around the ice bath as a family to hop in, so it's been nice.
11:12Well, I think the three of you have convinced me.
11:14I'm going to do it.
11:15If Tilly can do it, you can do it.
11:17We'll start with the feet and go from there.
11:22It's now Anne's turn to try something new.
11:25Your immune-boosting adventures, they're not over.
11:29And for you particularly, keeping your immune system strong is very, very important.
11:35So I thought sending you and Naomi to have a lymphatic drainage would be a really good idea.
11:41The idea of anything being drained doesn't sound particularly good on paper, but I was so excited
11:47that you were willing to give it a go.
11:52I've had massages done before.
11:54I've had quite a bit of physio done before.
11:56That involves a bit of pain, so I'm hoping this is a lot more gentle.
12:00I've had a lot of different types of massage.
12:03Some enjoyable, some not so enjoyable, but not a lymphatic one.
12:09To help put their minds at ease, they'll be meeting Deb to learn more about the benefits
12:17of this unique form of massage.
12:19So from a lymphatic drainage treatment, it is very different from a normal massage.
12:25The beauty of a lymphatic drainage treatment is that we're here to support your overall wellness
12:29as we're going through into the winter months.
12:32We're looking at how to boost your immune system because your lymphatic system is responsible for
12:37transporting our immune cells and filtering out any viruses or pathogens or bacteria.
12:42Okay.
12:42And just really supporting your body's own healing processes.
12:45Amazing.
12:46That's wonderful.
12:47So let's get started.
12:48Okay.
12:49I'll go first.
12:50Beautiful.
12:50Come on through.
12:51I've never had a lymphatic massage or therapy done before.
12:55Not sure what to expect.
12:57All right, Anne.
12:58So with any lymphatic drainage treatment, we always start with some deep breathing.
13:02So I'm just going to pop my hands either side of your ribs.
13:05And we're going to do this three times.
13:10Great.
13:10What we're doing is we're starting to activate the deeper lymphatic pump to promote flow in the body.
13:16Now I'm going to move up to your supraclavicular nodes.
13:19So what does this do, Deb?
13:21So it's in the nodes that we have our immune fighting system.
13:28We have about 600 located throughout our body.
13:31Right.
13:31Goodness, that many.
13:33This is very gentle.
13:34It's very light.
13:36We don't want it too deep.
13:37Otherwise, we will be working with your muscles rather than your lymph.
13:41Lymphatic drainage is a specialised gentle massage.
13:45The superficial lymphatic system is what we are targeting in a lymphatic drainage session.
13:50And our lymphatic system is just below the skin.
13:53How's that feeling?
13:54Wonderful.
13:55Wonderful.
13:56Oh, very relaxing.
13:59Don't worry about Naomi.
14:00She can just fend for herself.
14:01Yeah.
14:01I'll just stay here for the afternoon.
14:03Now that lymphatic drainage has Ann's tick of approval, it's Naomi's turn to experience it for herself.
14:13Lymphatic drainage for the face is amazing.
14:17When we have seasonal allergies or sinusitis, congestion, that needs to be moved.
14:23So first up, we're going to clear the drainage pathways down through the neck.
14:28Mm-hmm.
14:29I thought it was kind of a below the neck kind of treatment.
14:32Yeah, no.
14:32I didn't realise.
14:33So lymphatics is, it's beautiful to receive and it has many benefits.
14:38These nodes are amazing to do if you have sinusitis.
14:42I was about to say, I can imagine if you had a blocked up sinus, this would feel like heaven.
14:48I feel like I could float away now, so it's wonderful.
14:51Until we get home to the grandchildren.
14:53Yeah, exactly.
14:53Until we get home.
14:56Well, luckily for Ann and Naomi, the effects of lymphatic drainage are said to last for a few days at least.
15:03What did you think when you first heard the words lymphatic drainage?
15:07I wasn't sure what to expect.
15:09I thought, oh, is this going to be really painful, you know, like being to the physio or something?
15:15And, but no, she was very gentle and I slept like a baby that night.
15:20Did you?
15:21Yes.
15:21I suffer from insomnia.
15:22Ah.
15:23And so that was the highlight for me, having a really decent night's sleep.
15:27Yeah.
15:27I can literally feel the relief myself as you said that, because I know what that is like,
15:33having a good night's sleep.
15:34So I'm so glad that you got that benefit from it.
15:38Was it what you expected, Naomi?
15:40I was actually surprised how it wasn't just something that was enjoyable and that, you know,
15:43felt great, but it was something that was actually benefiting us kind of on a deeper level.
15:48And I'm actually looking forward to having another treatment down the track.
15:51Yeah.
15:51Good for you.
15:52Yeah.
15:52Because it felt great.
15:53I felt great afterwards.
15:54Yeah.
15:55Have you shown Adam and John how to do the lymphatic drainage?
15:59Not yet.
16:00All right.
16:00You've got to get on it.
16:01I might have to show him.
16:02I might have to show him.
16:03Yeah.
16:03Yeah.
16:04Yeah.
16:04How about for you, John?
16:05Have you had a go?
16:05I've watched Ann a bit and I'll give it a try one day, I think.
16:09Yeah.
16:10Yeah.
16:10I was impressed that she's keeping it up.
16:12Yeah.
16:12Yeah.
16:13Good for you.
16:14Next, the foxholes get some tips from farmer Will.
16:17We've killed many herbs in the past, so it'd actually be great to get some success going.
16:21And try his healthy and delicious soup.
16:25Our main goal here is obviously prevention.
16:29Finding ways to build our immunity so colds and flus don't get us down.
16:34Unfortunately, though, with kids at school and busy lives, the dreaded lurgy can still
16:40catch up with us, can't it?
16:41Despite our best efforts.
16:43Mm-hmm.
16:43And as a busy mum myself, the worst thing, aside from tissues all over the house,
16:49is that colds and flus slow you down.
16:52And we have places to be.
16:54Codril is the number one cold and flu brand in Australia and provides effective relief from
17:00cold and flu symptoms. Codril day and night tablets have a non-drowsy day formula that provides
17:07effective relief for symptoms like headaches and fever, body aches and pains, and blocked and
17:13runny noses. While the night formula helps you rest and recover.
17:17I'll take rest, thank you.
17:18Me too.
17:20Round the clock relief for cold and flu symptoms is what we need so we can get back to what matters most,
17:26like being together as family.
17:38The Foxall's last stop is a small family farm where owner Will grows a range of seasonal veggies
17:44with surprising benefits. Today, they'll be trying Will's soup with ingredients to boost immunity.
17:52But first, they'll need to roll up their sleeves and get to work.
17:55Welcome to Mustard Holdings and this is our vegetable garden.
18:00Now, we're going to take you around. We're going to look at a heap of different vegetables.
18:04All the ingredients we need for our soup, I'm going to get you guys to pick them.
18:07Oh, that sounds great.
18:08We've got a number of different vegetables growing for this season, so one of them being spring onions.
18:13Grab it around the base just a little bit higher and tilt it just slightly so we don't actually cut
18:17the plant. And they're absolutely phenomenal, they're not just a garnish. And you can literally
18:21soar through the soil a bit lower than that. They're full of all sorts of nutrients,
18:26heaps of vitamin C. Okay. Really good to help against the cold and flu season.
18:31Well done, Ollie. That was fantastic. You did a good job.
18:35So now we're going to get some herbs. Fantastic.
18:37I'm excited to get some tips about growing herbs. We've killed many herbs in the past,
18:43so it'd actually be great to get some success going. There are absolutely ways of producing
18:49fresh food at home. Herbs are an amazing one because they can be grown in pots, on balconies,
18:54even in apartments. That's it. Oh, perfect. Yeah, that's all right. And herbs have this
18:58beautiful ability to lift food. Mmm, that smells delicious. And are actually a really rich source of
19:04vitamins and minerals. Is this the one that we're putting into the soup? It is indeed.
19:09Oh, it's beautiful. Yum. So that's called lemon thyme. You can really smell the lemon.
19:15I'm already hungry. Regenerative farming is a number of different methods to improve soil quality
19:23and it affects our food. Tastes different to supermarket soil. We've got a healthy microbiome
19:29in the soil and that in turn comes into the food, helps our own internal immune system. If you feed the
19:35soil, the soil will feed you. On this farm, we don't use any pesticides, any herbicides or any
19:43chemicals of any kind. So it's truly organic? It's truly organic. Give that a wipe off and try.
19:48Poppy's going to try that one. I'm not keen on the dirt. Ollie's eating his.
19:52Yep, different huh? Lots of crunch. Lovely. That's good. Absolutely delicious.
20:05Got to have a treat along the way. Now, before they head back into the kitchen,
20:10there's just enough time to meet a few of the locals.
20:12Since farming here, we don't get sick anywhere near as much.
20:20So who's this? Gladys. Gladys.
20:25I think it's for a number of reasons. We obviously spend a lot of time outdoors,
20:29getting some natural sunlight, but also the quality of the food. The fresher the food,
20:35the quicker you can get it from the soil to the plate, the higher the nutrient value.
20:40And now, time to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
20:43OK. Three cheers for Will.
20:46Hoop-hoop. Hoop-hoop. All right. Hoop-hoop.
20:49Our day's been fantastic. It's probably exceeded my expectations.
20:53It's been enlightening. I'm a great believer in preventative medicine,
20:58and I think this is part of the way of preventing illness. Fantastic. It's beautiful.
21:04It's not Gladys, I promise.
21:09John, that soup looked absolutely delicious. It was. It was. It was like a huge multivitamin.
21:17It was indeed. It inspired me to plant a tomato plant. Excellent.
21:23Is that something that you've considered before, how food can really build you up and make you stronger
21:29for months like winter? Yes. Yeah, absolutely. I always say that Dad was a bit of a wellness
21:34influencer before. That was a thing. Go you, John. He's the guy, like, at almost 70, he can
21:41almost out-swim and out-walk me most days. I love that. How was the takeaway for you,
21:46Adam? What do you think? It was the very definition of farm to table,
21:49really. Yeah, that's true. So we picked everything, and yeah,
21:51we made it in the afternoon. Will you be sharing that at school with your
21:54teenagers, trying to get them to eat better? I'll leave that to their parents.
21:59Yeah. Oli ate capsicum and a celery that was still... Did you eat the dirt, Oli?
22:04He did. We all did. We all ate the dirt. So it was... Yeah, it didn't taste bad.
22:10I am so thrilled at how well you have taken this experience on from ice baths to lymphatic drainage
22:18to the immunity-boosting foods. I mean, the fact that you've bought yourself an ice bath and
22:24you doing the massage, even you, you've become a gardener. Well done. We won't get too carried away.
22:29Actually good. Okay, for the beginnings of a gardener. It's maintainable. It starts with one plant,
22:36though, right? It does. It starts with one plant. So congratulations to you,
22:40and thanks for just giving it all a go. Thank you. Thank you. It's been an amazing experience.
22:44Amazing experience. I agree. So whether it's a case of mind over matter... You've got this.
22:51Me time. I feel like I could float away now. Or immune-boosting food. It's been enlightening.
22:57Talking to your local pharmacist and trying new things. I'll just stay here for the afternoon.
23:02Can really help you take control of your health and enjoy the cooler months ahead.
23:07Oh, I've been doing one. And I've been going up to here, because there's one under your ears.
23:13That feels really nice. Yeah, you're obviously relaxed. They're all fresh stuff. I know,
23:17I know. Their veggies were probably a little bit fresher than ours. Yeah.
23:21That's a breaking job.
23:21I don't know. The time we're going. We've got four minutes.
23:25Next time... The sporty Kittle family actively seek help to relieve their stress.
23:33Is it possible to just laugh it off? Maybe the answer...
23:37I'm coming. I'm coming.
23:39Is a four-legged therapist?
23:41Or can they learn to let go?
23:45Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!
