00:00Irish Prime Minister Mikhail Martin says Israel has lost its moral compass amid escalating civilian casualties in Gaza, calling for urgent accountability.
00:10Robert Provost takes the name Leo XIV as he is elected the first American pope in the 2000-year history of the Catholic Church.
00:20Serbia's President Aleksandr Vucic traveled to Moscow for Victory Day celebrations following an EU resolution critical of the country's integration process and rule of law.
00:30North Korea fired short-range missiles into its eastern sea in what South Korea says may be a test of weapons it plans to export.
00:40The Irish Prime Minister Mikhail Martin has described Gaza as hell on earth and criticized the EU's lack of response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza,
00:50and reiterated calls to reopen the EU-Israel Association agreement.
00:56The Prime Minister met with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss this as well as the ongoing trade war with the U.S.
01:05Speaking with Euronews, he said Ireland condemns Hamas' terrorism and wants all the hostages kidnapped by Hamas released,
01:13but says Israel's war has lost its moral compass.
01:16It's quite shocking what is now happening within Gaza.
01:21To have an effective blockade for 50 days and more, 60 days maybe now, in terms of food, in terms of the essentials of life,
01:29the bare necessities of life, in my view, must be considered a war crime.
01:35I don't say that easily. I want a resolution. We want a restoration of the ceasefire. We want the release of all hostages.
01:43Israel launched its war in Gaza in response to the Hamas attack on October 7th of 2023.
01:49In my view, it was shocking to take people as hostages.
01:52These were innocent people at a concert in their kibbutz.
01:56I went to Kibbutz Beirut myself to see at first hand the impact of the horrific Hamas attack on Israel.
02:05And that was shocking and horrible.
02:07And I've condemned it from the outset, and I went there to show empathy with the people who had been attacked.
02:12So all those, I mean, the hostages should have been released a long time ago.
02:15But the war that has been waged in response, in my view, has lost any moral compass at this stage,
02:23in terms of its unacceptable impact on the civilian population and on children.
02:30Israel described in the past the Irish policy as extreme anti-Israeli.
02:35You can watch the whole interview next Tuesday on the Europe Conversation.
02:39Robert Prevost has been elected as the first American Pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
02:51The newly elected Pope made his first appearance in St. Peter's Square to a cheering crowd.
03:02Moments earlier, white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel
03:06and the bells of St. Peter's Basilica rang loudly.
03:11Cardinals had just elected the 267th Pope to lead the Catholic Church.
03:18A missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru
03:22and leads the Vatican's powerful office of bishops,
03:26Prevost will take the name of Leo XIV.
03:30He was elected on just the second day of the conclave,
03:33where he needed at least 89 votes of the 133 cardinals who participated.
03:41Leo XIV will succeed Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday.
03:46President Aleksandr Vucic traveled to Moscow shortly after the European Parliament adopted a resolution
03:57critical of Serbia's European integration progress.
04:00The resolution cited Serbia's non-alignment with EU foreign policy
04:03and concerns regarding the rule of law.
04:06Vucic's attendance at the military parade on Red Square,
04:09commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism,
04:13faced travel disruptions.
04:14Latvia reportedly denied his plane overflight,
04:18leading to a reroute via Turkey and Azerbaijan.
04:21This change resulted in a delay in Baku,
04:23while awaiting permission to continue.
04:26Upon arrival in Moscow,
04:27Vucic stated he anticipated criticism from Brussels
04:30and said he expected the EU to punish him and not Serbia.
04:33The road was not good.
04:34It was not a good deal.
04:39The road was not good.
04:40It was energy, I think it will be visible.
04:45The road is a great opportunity,
04:48We go with absolutely amazing nature, people, and everything is amazing.
04:52When we get to new events, the energy is incredible.
04:55We expect a couple of days to not be the same as today,
05:00which is actually the most difficult.
05:02But we expect to be ready for everything.
05:18It was definitely the most difficult day. We had the highest kilometers.
05:30I think it was 150, and we came back yesterday.
05:34What is your desire for the family?
05:37We don't want you.
05:48They intend to present their views on Serbia's current political and social situation.
05:58Germany's domestic intelligence agency will temporarily stop referring to
06:03the Alternative for Germany party as an extremist organization.
06:08Last week, the intelligence agency designated the party as a right-wing extremist organization
06:14that poses a threat to democracy and the constitutional order.
06:18The AFD, however, were quick to file a lawsuit against the agency.
06:23Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Krupala called the temporary suspension a partial success.
06:29The decision means the agency can no longer publicly use the extremist group categorization
06:35until the end of the proceedings.
06:37It also means the agency has fewer legal options for monitoring the AFD.
06:44They may be small and seemingly harmless, but emojis can carry more weight than you might guess,
06:52sometimes acting like digital social hand grenades.
06:57While some might see an emoji as friendly or funny, another might find it confusing or even offensive.
07:06To explore this further, passers-by in Reykjavik were asked to interpret a selection of emojis.
07:14Some found certain emojis joyful, while others thought it expressed sadness.
07:19What does this mean?
07:20What does this mean by yourself?
07:22What does this mean by yourself?
07:23Is it a
07:38This is how you know, this is how you know, this is like a hlátukallin if he is dead.
07:45This gives him a little skin if he is dead and a hlátri.
07:49This is sort of leather.
07:54And this?
07:56This is something that is dangerous or dead.
07:59Even the classic smiley face isn't always a safe territory.
08:04The degree of a smile and the shape of the emoji's mouth can send subtly different signals.
08:11The exercise showed that in the world of digital communication, meaning isn't fixed
08:16and that even the simplest symbols can speak volumes.
08:23At least one person was killed in an Israeli airstrike near the southern Lebanese city of Nabatie,
08:30according to Lebanon's health ministry.
08:33Eight others have been reported injured.

08:44including weapons and tunnel shafts as part of an underground network.
08:50Israel accused Hezbollah of regrouping and maintaining its infrastructure,
08:56violating a U.S. brokered ceasefire from November.
09:00Hezbollah says it will not lay down its weapons while Israel controls part of southern Lebanon
09:07and continues its strikes on the country.
09:10Israel still controls five hilltop points on Lebanese territory following its ground invasion last year.
09:19North Korea has fired a series of short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast on Thursday.
09:29The South Korean military says the missiles may have been launched to test their performance before Pyongyang plants to export the weapons.
09:37Hezbollah says it will not be used to test their weapons.
09:44Hezbollah says it will not be used to test their performance.
09:49Hezbollah says it will not be used to test their performance.
09:54Although the spokesperson did not name the intended recipient,
09:57North Korea has been sending military equipment and troops to Russia to assist in its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
10:04Pyongyang previously denied any involvement in the war.
10:07However, last month they confirmed it had indeed sent troops to assist Russia.
10:13World leaders have expressed concern over the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan
10:23after India launched strikes into Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir on Wednesday.
10:28U.S. President Donald Trump urged both sides to stop the violence.
10:33It's so terrible. My position is I get along with both. I know both very well and I want to see them work it out. I want to see them stop.
10:43EU Foreign Chief Kaya Callas and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer both spoke of mediation attempts.
10:50We are engaging urgently with both countries as well as other international partners, encouraging dialogue, de-escalation and the protection of civilians.
