00:11The United States carried out new airstrikes on Yemen after both the Trump administration
00:15and the Iran-backed Houthis vowed escalation over the weekend.
00:20A Peruvian farmer took German energy giant RWE to court for causing global warming in
00:26a case which could set a significant legal precedent.
00:30European leaders offer condolences and assistance to North Macedonia after a nightclub fire
00:35claimed the lives of 59 people and injured 155 more.
00:39U.S. President Donald Trump says it will discuss ending the war in Ukraine with his Russian
00:45counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
00:48His comments come after Ukraine agreed to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan last week.
00:53Trump said territorial issues and power plants are going to be part of Tuesday's conversation.
01:22U.S. Secretary for Putin confirms the Russian leader is scheduled to speak with Trump on
01:27Tuesday.
01:28Last Thursday, Putin said he supported a truce but listed several questions he said still
01:33had to be discussed.
01:35The diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire deal come as Russia and Ukraine traded drone
01:41fire over the weekend and into Monday morning.
01:48The United States carried out new airstrikes on Yemen on Monday, after both the Trump administration
01:53and the Iran-backed Houthis vowed escalation over the weekend.
01:59The Houthi-run Health Ministry said that at least 53 people have been killed since the
02:03U.S. began its new wave of strikes against the rebel group on Saturday, including five
02:08children and two women.
02:11The Houthis retaliated on Sunday with attacks on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier
02:17and its accompanying warships.
02:20The U.S. said its strikes aimed to deter the rebels from attacking military and commercial
02:24vessels in the Red Sea.
02:27The Houthis said last week they would resume targeting Israeli vessels after Israel cut
02:31off humanitarian aid to Gaza this month.
02:35The U.S. airstrikes were among the most extensive attacks against the Houthis since the war
02:39in Gaza began in October of 2023.
02:48A German court began a hearing on a Peruvian farmer's case against major energy company
02:53RWE.
02:56Saul Luciano Llujá's lawsuit against RWE argues the company's historical greenhouse
03:02gas emissions have fuelled global warming, accelerating glacial melt above his hometown
03:08in Peru.
03:09RWE, which has never operated in Peru, denies legal responsibility and says climate change
03:16is an issue caused by many contributors.
03:19The reality is that the melting of the glaciers, unfortunately, the mountains are suffering
03:32and that has its consequences, that's why I'm here asking for climate justice.
03:42Experts say the case could set a significant precedent in the fight to hold major polluters
03:47accountable for climate change.
03:49To this day, RWE's emissions are as high as those of all countries, including the Netherlands
03:55and Belgium.
03:56And that's why we have a very large emitter here, and it doesn't have to be the last
04:01one.
04:02If we hopefully close the case by the end of next year, because that's what I hope,
04:07I hope that today we can go out with a clear evidence and then be able to deal with the
04:12next question, i.e. climate change.
04:14However, RWE argues the precedent being set is instead dangerous by holding individual
04:31emitters accountable for global climate change.
04:35The company insists climate solutions should be addressed through state and international
04:40policies, not the courts.
04:45Ex-President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili has been sentenced to a further four and a
04:52half years in prison, bringing his total sentence up to 12 years and 6 months.
05:00On Monday, the court sentenced him on charges of illegally crossing Georgia's border when
05:05returning from exile in Ukraine in 2021, when he was immediately arrested.
05:12Saakashvili, who served as Georgia's president from 2004 to 2013, had previously been sentenced
05:19on charges of abuse of power and embezzlement that opposition parties have labeled as politically
05:24motivated.
05:25I am being judged for daring and managing to transform Georgia into a successful state,
05:31for defeating corruption, for striving for the people and not for my own pocket, he explained
05:36on a videoconference call in court on Monday.
05:40In 2003, Saakashvili led the so-called Rose Revolution protests.
05:46In office, he reorientated Georgia towards the West and embarked on an ambitious public
05:50sector reform.
05:52But in 2012, his United National Movement party lost the election to the Georgian Dream
05:57Party, which is currently in power and has been accused of tightening its grip on democratic
06:02freedoms while steering the country away from the EU membership and tilting towards Russia.
06:09The French champagne industry is bracing itself for a major blow after US President
06:18Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to slap tariffs of up to 200% on European alcohol
06:25if the EU's new tariffs on bourbon are not lifted.
06:31The US is France's top client when it comes to champagne exports, causing panic among
06:36winemakers of an already weakened sector.
06:39Champagne sales have been sinking for more than two years now, as inflation-weary consumers,
06:45both in France and abroad, cut back due to rising prices, a trend this Parisian wine
06:51shop owner has definitely noticed.
07:03Instead, her clients turn to other bubbly alternatives, like a sparkling Vouvray wine
07:09that she sells for approximately 10 euros.
07:17Other more affordable alternatives are threatening the champagne sector internationally.
07:22It's a much-needed wake-up call for the industry, according to an expert.
07:39For the moment, Europe and France seem unwilling to back down to Trump's threats.
07:59The French Federation of Wine and Spirits exporters, on the other hand, said that they're
08:04fed up with being systematically sacrificed in the wake of the trade war.
08:09Parents of teenage victims who died in a nightclub fire in North Macedonia gathered
08:18outside a hospital to prevent coroners from taking away the bodies of their children.
08:22A massive fire tore through an overcrowded club in Kojani, killing 59 people and injuring
08:28155 others.
08:30They yelled and shouted at officials, demanding explanations for the negligence that led to
08:35the death of their loved ones.
08:40The tragic fire drew messages of support from around the world.
08:57European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her condolences to the victims
09:01and their relatives in a post on X.
09:05Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky wished a speedy recovery to those wounded.
09:09Pope Francis, who's been hospitalized for more than a month for double pneumonia, also
09:13offered his profound condolences.
09:16Skopje says it had accepted offers of assistance from Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Turkey to
09:21send patients with life-threatening injuries for treatment.
09:25But for many of those who survived, the wounds cannot be treated.
09:35Some of them got stuck in the wall and I couldn't get them out.
09:39I fell down the stairs and they all ran over me.
09:45I barely managed to breathe and at the end I lost my sister.
09:55Officials say the club was carrying more than double its maximum occupancy of 250 at the
10:00time of the fire.
10:03Fifteen people were detained to investigate possible corruption and bribery after it was
10:07discovered the venue was operating without a proper license.
10:11A week of national mourning was declared in the country to honor the victims.
10:17More than 250 Venezuelans have been deported by the United States and sent to El Salvador
10:23where they were transferred to a maximum security prison.
10:27The El Salvadorian President and US Secretary of State confirmed the deportations on Sunday
10:32despite a judge's order blocking the move.
10:35The Trump administration accused them of being members of the Tren de Aguirre criminal gang,
10:41invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport them.
10:46I don't know where we are.
10:48I couldn't see anything.
10:50When they left us in the place, we looked and there was a wall.
10:55I turned around and there was another big wall with pipes and all that.
11:00I couldn't see anything.
11:02They put us in there.
11:03It was just doors, doors, doors.
11:05When I looked down, I saw a rug that said Guantanamo.
11:10The Trump administration has not identified the migrants deported or provided any evidence
11:15they are members of the Tren de Aguirre or that they committed any crimes in the US.
11:21The Alien Enemies Act has been used only three times in US history.
