00:00Macron announced a plan to send forces from several European countries to Ukraine in the
00:05event of a peace treaty with Russia.
00:11Search efforts continued for four missing U.S. soldiers in Lithuania after their vehicle
00:16was found submerged in water.
00:21The pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries are taking the EU to court over the new polluter
00:26pays wastewater treatment directive.
00:32French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to send reassurance forces from European
00:38countries to Ukraine in the event of a peace treaty with Russia.
00:43These forces would act as a deterrent against Russian aggression and help guarantee long-term
00:48security.
00:49His comments came as the Coalition of the Willing gathered in Paris to discuss strengthening
00:54Ukraine's hand as it pushes for a ceasefire with Russia.
01:25Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the Coalition of the Willing for their support
01:31and efforts to secure a ceasefire.
01:48The meeting came amid intensifying efforts to broker a ceasefire, driven by pressure
01:53from U.S. President Donald Trump to end the fighting.
02:05It's a much-awaited announcement that's been in the works for weeks now.
02:10French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled the outline for a reassurance force from several
02:16countries that would intervene in Ukraine in case of a peace treaty with Russia.
02:21But there's still quite a lot of uncertainty surrounding this announcement.
02:26First of all, we don't know which countries are willing to participate and how much they
02:30are willing to give.
02:32The French President did admit that the decision was not a unanimous one.
02:37We also don't know what sort of equipment will be used and exactly how many troops will
02:43be sent.
02:45And another important factor is that Macron insisted that these troops will not be there
02:51for peacekeeping purposes, but rather to provide the Ukrainian army with long-term support
02:58and reassurance.
03:00So in that case, what happens in case of a new Russian attack?
03:05One thing is clear, is that the Kremlin has repeatedly said that any sort of intervention
03:11would lead to a direct conflict.
03:16At least 12 people were injured, including a 12-year-old girl in a Russian airstrike
03:25late on Wednesday on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, according to local officials.
03:31The attacks targeted civilian infrastructure and sparked at least four separate fires,
03:37causing damage to a number of buildings and a production facility, according to the Ukrainian
03:41State Emergency Service.
03:46Russian drone strikes also targeted the city of Akhterka in the Sumy region overnight,
03:51sparking a fire and causing damage to a number of buildings.
03:55No casualties were reported.
03:59Meanwhile, Russia's defence ministry said one Ukrainian drone was shot down over the
04:04Buransk region on Wednesday, causing a power shortage.
04:08On Tuesday, both sides said a limited agreement to stop fighting in the Black Sea had been reached.
04:15Search efforts continued on Thursday for four missing US soldiers in Lithuania after
04:25their vehicle was found submerged in water a day earlier.
04:29The soldiers went missing on Tuesday near the border with Belarus during a training exercise.
04:35Lithuania's defence minister said the vehicle was found five metres down, after which enough
04:40water was drained out to dig for it.
04:45We have been searching the area all night, because we are still trying to find the vehicle.
04:53We can't confirm whether there are soldiers in the vehicle until we see it.
05:03Both Lithuanian and US troops joined the effort, which Lithuanian officials described as a
05:08highly complex operation.
05:10As our secretary of defence has said, we will not rest until our troops are found.
05:16You can see that it is technically a very difficult recovery situation.
05:22I want to thank the Lithuanian government, the authorities and all that are out here
05:27helping in the recovery.
05:29The Lithuanian defence minister expressed hope operations would proceed smoothly,
05:34and said there were positive signs in the ongoing rescue efforts.
05:41The European Commission is preparing its response after the US rolled out new tariffs on car
05:48imports from Europe.
05:50The latest measures will factor in the car tariffs announced Wednesday night, as well
05:55as reciprocal tariffs expected next week.
05:58It is unclear whether these tariffs will affect European countries individually or the EU
06:04as a bloc.
06:05The Commission is set to consult member states on a list of American products that have been
06:10subject to suspended tariffs since the first Trump administration.
06:14A second list is now also reportedly under consideration as Brussels weighs its options.
06:21Soaring trade tensions threaten European automakers already struggling with tepid economic growth
06:27and rising competition from China.
06:30I think it goes too far to say that this will be existential right away, but it's impacting
06:37definitely a lot.
06:39And it comes at a moment where there is already a lot of pressure, competition also from other
06:45corners in the world, and a time where we need to manage a huge transformation, a green
06:52decarbonisation transformation, a digital transformation.
06:57The stakes are enormous for European automakers and their vast network of suppliers, as well
07:03as the entire European economy.
07:06The heavy burden could punish consumers and companies alike on both sides of the Atlantic.
07:27A EU official told Euronews that once Washington announces its reciprocal tariffs next week,
07:38the bloc may need to respond with further measures.
07:41This could potentially impact US services in Europe and would mark a significant escalation
07:46in the brewing trade war.
07:49At least six people have died and nine have been injured after a tourist submarine carrying
07:5645 people sank in Egypt's Red Sea on Thursday.
08:00All of the victims were Russian nationals.
08:04After the incident, the region's governor visited a hospital treating the survivors.
08:10The vessel went down after setting off from the harbour in the coastal city of Rwgada.
08:17It was heading for an underwater tour of local coral reefs.
08:22It is not yet clear what caused the submarine to sink.
08:27This is not the first incident of its kind in the Red Sea.
08:30In November last year, a tourist boat also sank, leaving 11 passengers dead or missing.
08:38An ongoing eruption of Hawaii's most active volcano restarted again on Tuesday when lava
08:48began pouring out of a vent in the caldera.
08:51Kilauea has been erupting on and off since the end of December, shooting tall fountains
08:56of lava into the air and spilling molten rock across the caldera floor each time it's come
09:01back to life.
09:04The latest eruption wasn't affecting any residential areas.
09:08The current episode is the 15th of the ongoing eruption, which has been a popular attraction
09:12for tourists.
09:22The pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries have taken their case against the Urban Wastewater
09:27Treatment Directive to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
09:31The directive, which came into force on the 1st of January, requires producers of medicines
09:36and cosmetics to finance at least 80% of the treatment required to eliminate micropollutants
09:41from urban wastewater, in accordance with the Polluter Pays Principle.
09:46These micropollutants that come out from the effluent from the wastewater treatment plants,
09:52analysis has shown that more than 90% actually are originating from pharmaceuticals and cosmetic
10:00products. And then we believe it's a fair principle that 80% of the costs for removing
10:09this out of the wastewater, that that is going to be paid by those who are generating these
10:18costs.
10:19But the pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors believe that the burden should be more evenly
10:24shared.
10:25We're absolutely paying our fair share of the pollution that we provide, but it's the
10:30fair share. And this is really what we're after. We're trying to understand, since we
10:33couldn't get the data from the European Commission and the methodology on which the decision
10:37was based, we're trying to find out who the different polluters are and make sure that
10:41this important directive is set up on the right principles and that all the actors are
10:46involved, not only to pay their fair share, but also to make sure they're incentivized
10:50to make more sustainable products in the future.
10:53The Commission estimates the cost of treatment at 1.2 billion euros a year. While some claim
10:59this is but a drop in the ocean compared to the turnover of the pharmaceutical sector,
11:03Medicines for Europe believes that this directive jeopardizes the accessibility and affordability
11:09of medication.
11:12We think this is really disproportionate because it has a very, very negative impact on access
11:18to medicines. We've actually studied how this will impact the medicines, so we've looked
11:23at how it will increase the cost of medicines. And so, for example, for diabetes medicine,
11:29metformin, which is very commonly used for diabetes, it would increase the cost by 900
11:35percent according to the current spending in Europe.
11:39In total, 16 cases have been brought before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
